Abstract:The impacts of neonicotinoids have generally focussed on the responses of the pure active ingredient. Using a selection of two commercial formulations and the active ingredient, we ran three laboratory studies using 14C-labelled acetamiprid to study the leaching, sorption and mineralisation behaviours of the commercially available neonicotinoid formulations compared to the pure active ingredient. We added 14C-spiked acetamiprid to a sandy loam soil that had received long-term additions of farmyard manure at two rates (10 t/ha/yr and 25 t/ha/yr) and mineral fertilisers, as a control. We found significant differences in acetamiprid mineralisation across both the SOM and chemical treatments. Sorption was primarily impacted by changes in SOM and any differences in leachate recovery were much less significant across both treatment types. The mineralisation of all pesticide formulations was comparatively slow, with <23 % of any given chemical/soil organic matter combination being mineralised over the experimental period. The highest mineralisation rates occurred in samples with the highest soil organic matter levels. The results also showed that 82.9 % ± 1.6 % of the acetamiprid applied was leached from the soil during repeated simulated rainfall events. This combined with the low sorption values, and the low rates of mineralisation, implies that acetamiprid is highly persistent and mobile within sandy soils. As a highly persistent neurotoxin with high invertebrate selectivity, the presence of neonicotinoids in soil presents a high toxicology risk to various beneficial soil organisms, including earthworms, as well as being at high risk of transfer to surrounding watercourses.
Occurrence of Neonicotinoid Residues in Danube River and Tributaries

Abstract:Occurrence and fate of 6 neonicotinoid insecticides belonging to different chemical classes were investigated in the aqueous phase of surface water at 16 sampling locations along the Romanian side of the Danube River and its three main tributaries (Jiu, Olt, Arges). This is the first report on the neonicotinoid occurrence in the Danube River and three tributaries. It was observed a contamination of Danube River and its tributaries, higher in planting period than pre-or post- planting period, with the next compounds (detection frequency and the concentration range): thiamethoxam (68.7%, 0.9-3.8ng/L), clothianidin (64.6%, 0.84-9.6ng/L), nitenpyram (52.08%, 0.39-11.1ng/L), imidacloprid (31.2%, 0.5-8.2ng/L), acetamiprid (16.6%, 0.84-12.7ng/L). The four main neonicotinoids (clothianidin, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, nitenpyram) follow the classic pattern in which concentrations and frequency increase during the planting period and that is correlated with seed crop treatment. Total neonicotinoid levels present in investigated Rivers, reaching up to 31.6 ng/L, may affect aquatic invertebrates that are most susceptible to these insecticides. For clothianidin and nitenpyram were obtained positive correlations between the percentage of the area planted with cereals and concentrations of this compound (r= 0.574, r =0.665) which indicate their use in agricultural area. For imidacloprid were obtained positive correlations between percent of permanent cultivated crop in urban land and concentrations of this compound (r =0.264, r =0.877).

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated the distribution and concentrations of a range of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) and other insecticides, fungicides, biocides and selected herbicides in watersheds that drain into the lower Great Lakes in Ontario, Canada. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) were deployed in 18 watersheds during late May to late June of 2016. Grab samples were also collected in 7 of these watersheds. There was generally good agreement between the time-weighted average concentrations of pesticides estimated from the POCIS and the concentrations detected in grab samples. The NNIs, thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidacloprid, were present in several watersheds at concentrations that exceeded the Canadian Water Quality Guideline for imidacloprid of 0.23 μg/L. The new generation insecticides, flonicamid and flupyradifurone were also detected in some watersheds, which is the first report of these pesticides in the peer-reviewed literature. Atrazine, 2,4-D, dicamba, carbendazim, thiophanate methyl and several azole-based fungicides were also widely detected. Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) indicated that a high proportion (i.e. >80%) of the watersheds could be discriminated from each other on the basis of the pattern of pesticides detected in surface waters, and the proportion of field crops in the watershed.

Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides are frequently detected in surface waters near agricultural areas, leading to a potential for chronic exposure to sensitive aquatic species. The midge Chironomus dilutus and the mayfly Neocloeon triangulifer have been shown to be acutely sensitive to neonicotinoids. Previous studies have established chronic effects of some neonicotinoids on C. dilutus, but reproduction has not been studied. Toxic effects have not been assessed using N. triangulifer. We present the results of chronic, static-renewal tests for 6 neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam) with C. dilutus (≤56-d in length) and N. triangulifer (≤32-d in length). Emergence was generally the most sensitive endpoint for both species across all neonicotinoids. Effect concentrations, 10% (EC10s; emergence) were 0.03 to 1.1 μg L-1 for acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiacloprid. Dinotefuran and thiamethoxam were less potent, with EC10s (C. dilutus) or median effect concentrations (EC50s; N. triangulifer) of 2.2 to 11.2 μg L-1 . Hazard was assessed through comparison of neonicotinoid environmental concentrations from agricultural surface waters in Ontario (Canada) with either the 5th percentile hazard concentration (for imidacloprid) or species-specific EC10s from the present study (for all remaining neonicotinoids). The resulting hazard quotients (HQs) indicated little to no hazard (HQ <1) in terms of chronic toxicity for acetamiprid, dinotefuran, thiacloprid, or thiamethoxam. Abstract:Insulin potentiates N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in neurons and Xenopus oocytes expressing recombinant NMDARs. The present study shows that insulin induced (i) an increase in channel number times open probability (nPo) in outside-out patches excised from Xenopus oocytes, with no change in mean open time, unitary conductance, or reversal potential, indicating an increase in n and/or Po; (ii) an increase in charge transfer during block of NMDA-elicited currents by the open channel blocker MK-801, indicating increased number of functional NMDARs in the cell membrane with no change in Po; and (iii) increased NR1 surface expression, as indicated by Western blot analysis of surface proteins. Botulinum neurotoxin A greatly reduced insulin potentiation, indicating that insertion of new receptors occurs via SNARE-dependent exocytosis. Thus, insulin potentiation occurs via delivery of new channels to the plasma membrane. NMDARs assembled from mutant subunits lacking all known sites of tyrosine and serine/threonine phosphorylation in their carboxyl-terminal tails exhibited robust insulin potentiation, suggesting that insulin potentiation does not require direct phosphorylation of NMDAR subunits. Because insulin and insulin receptors are localized to glutamatergic synapses in the hippocampus, insulin-regulated trafficking of NMDARs may play a role in synaptic transmission and plasticity, including long-term potentiation.
Deriving freshwater guideline values for neonicotinoid insecticides: Implications for water quality guidelines and ecological risk assessment

Abstract:The increased use of neonicotinoid insecticides in aquatic environments poses a significant threat to non-target freshwater species. However, the existing water quality guidelines (WQGs) for neonicotinoids mainly focus on imidacloprid, and only a few authoritative institutions have established WQGs for other neonicotinoids. There is a critical need to develop WQGs and conduct ecological risk assessment (ERA) of different neonicotinoids in global freshwater environments. In this study, we derived interim acute and chronic guideline values and acute-to-chronic ratios (ACRs) for six neonicotinoids based on publicly available acute and chronic toxicity data. The exposure concentrations of neonicotinoids were obtained from published literature worldwide, and ERA was conducted for neonicotinoids in global freshwater ecosystems using a tiered approach. The derived chronic guideline values (95% confidence interval (CI), ng/L) were 0.63 (0.02–5.47) for thiacloprid (the lowest) and 16.4 for dinotefuran (the highest). The identified ACRs (95% CI) ranged from 90.9 (47.0–180) to 957 (102–3350), which can be used to extrapolate scarce chronic data from the acute data. Neonicotinoid concentrations in global freshwater were predicted from 10.6 (6.88–23.4) (thiacloprid) to 339 (211–786) ng/L (thiamethoxam). The estimated risk quotients ranged from 3.23 (dinotefuran) to 21.73 (thiacloprid), and the probability of exceeding WQGs ranged from 27.1% (dinotefuran) to 77.1% (thiacloprid). The ERA results indicated that the six neonicotinoids posed negligible acute risks but high chronic risks to global freshwater ecosystems, especially acetamiprid (65.8%) and thiacloprid (28.1%). The key findings of this study provide critical scientific information regarding the ecological risks of long-term neonicotinoid exposure and key insights for policy development and water quality control.

Residues of neonicotinoids in soil, water and people's hair: A case study from three agricultural regions of the Philippines

Abstract:Synthetic pesticides such as neonicotinoids are commonly used to treat crops in tropical regions, where data on environmental and human contamination are patchy and make it difficult to assess to what extent pesticides may harm human health, especially in less developed countries. To assess the degree of environmental and human contamination with neonicotinoids we collected soil, water and people's hair in three agricultural regions of the Philippines and analysed them by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS-MS). Five neonicotinoids, namely acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam were targeted. Residues of neonicotinoids were found in 78% of 67 soil samples from the three provinces. Total neonicotinoid loads ranged on average between 0.017 and 0.89 μg/kg in soils of rice, banana and vegetable crops, and were 130 times higher (113.5 μg/kg) in soils of a citrus grove. Imidacloprid was the most prevalent compound at an average of 0.56 μg/kg in soil while thiacloprid was below the limit of detection. Half of the eight water samples from a rice field and nearby creek contained residues of imidacloprid (mean 1.29 ng/L) and one contained thiamethoxam (0.15 ng/L). Residues of neonicotinoids were found in 81% of 99 samples of people's hair from the surveyed regions (average total concentrations 0.14 to 1.18 ng/g, maximum 350 ng/g). Hair residue levels correlated well with the concentrations of thiamethoxam and total residues in soils from the same locality (r = 0.98). The presence of thiacloprid in 15% of the hair samples but not in soil samples suggests an additional route of exposure among people, which is most likely to be through ingestion of agricultural food and drinks available in the market.

Meta-analysis of neonicotinoid insecticides in global surface waters

Abstract:Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are a class of insecticides that have high insecticidal activity and are extensively used worldwide. However, increasing evidence suggests their long-term residues in the environment and toxic effects on nontarget organisms. NEO residues are frequently detected in water and consequently have created increasing levels of pollution and pose significant risks to humans. Many studies have focused on NEO concentrations in water; however, few studies have focused on global systematic reviews or meta-analyses of NEO concentrations in water. The purpose of this review is to conduct a meta-analysis on the concentration of NEOs in global waters based on published detections from several countries to extend knowledge on the application of NEOs. In the present study, 43 published papers from 10 countries were indexed for a meta-analysis of the global NEO distribution in water. Most of these studies focus on the intensive agricultural area, such as eastern Asia and North America. The order of mean concentrations is identified as imidacloprid (119.542 ± 15.656 ng L-1) > nitenpyram (88.076 ± 27.144 ng L-1) > thiamethoxam (59.752 ± 9.068 ng L-1) > dinotefuran (31.086 ± 9.275 ng L-1) > imidaclothiz (24.542 ± 2.906 ng L-1) > acetamiprid (23.360 ± 4.015 ng L-1) > thiacloprid (11.493 ± 5.095 ng L-1). Moreover, the relationships between NEO concentrations and some environmental factors are analyzed. NEO concentrations increase with temperature, oxidation-reduction potential, and the percentage of cultivated crops but decrease with stream discharge, pH, dissolved oxygen, and precipitation. NEO concentrations show no significant relations to turbidity and conductivity.
Neonicotinoids, fipronil, chlorpyrifos, carbendazim, chlorotriazines, chlorophenoxy herbicides, bentazon, and selected pesticide transformation products in surface water and drinking water from northern Vietnam

Abstract:Studies on the occurrence of emerging pesticides in surface and drinking water in Vietnam are limited. In this study, lake water (n = 7), river water (n = 1), tap water (n = 46), and bottled water (n = 3) collected from Hanoi and other four provinces in northern Vietnam were analyzed for selected pesticides (including insecticides such as neonicotinoids, fipronil, and chlorpyrifos; fungicide carbendazim; herbicides such as atrazine, terbuthylazine, simazine, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, and bentazon) and some of their degradates by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Carbendazim (median: 86.7 ng/L) and triazines (49.3 ng/L) were the major pesticides found in lake water samples, followed by neonicotinoids and their degradation products (15.1 ng/L), chlorpyrifos and its degradate (13.4 ng/L), fipronil and its degradates (3.76 ng/L), chlorophenoxy acid herbicides (2.10 ng/L), and bentazon (0.62 ng/L). Triazines (164 ng/L) were the major pesticides in river water. Higher concentrations (median: 39.3 ng/L; range: 1.20–127) of selected pesticides were found in tap water from Hanoi than those from four other provinces studied (5.49 ng/L; 4.73–66.8 ng/L). Bottled water samples collected from Hanoi contained lower concentrations of pesticide residues (median: 3.54 ng/L, range: 2.18–8.09) than those of tap water samples. The calculated risks from pesticide exposure through ingestion of tap water by the general populations were low. However, fipronil concentrations in lake water exceeded the benchmark value recommended for freshwater in the United States or the Netherlands. Degradation of acetamiprid into desmethyl-acetamiprid was found in lake water.

Abstract:The adsorption and degradation of seven commercially available neonicotinoid insecticides in four types of agricultural soils from three states (Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee) in the USA were studied. The adsorptions of all the neonicotinoids fit a linear isotherm. The adsorption distribution coefficients (Kd) were found to be below 2.0 L/kg for all the neonicotinoids in all the soils from Mississippi and Arkansas. Only in the Tennessee soil samples, the Kd ranged from 0.96 to 4.21 L/kg. These low values indicate a low affinity and high mobility of these insecticides in the soils. The soil organic carbon–water partitioning coefficient Koc ranged from 349 to 2569 L/kg. These Kd values showed strong positive correlations with organic carbon content of the soils. The calculated Gibbs energy change (ΔG) of these insecticides in all the soils ranged from − 14.6 to − 19.5 kJ/mol, indicating that physical process was dominant in the adsorptions. The degradations of all these neonicotinoids in the soils followed a first-order kinetics with half-lives ranging from 33 to 305 days. The order of the insecticides with decreasing degradation rate is as follows: clothianidin > thiamethoxam > imidacloprid > acetamiprid > dinotefuran > thiacloprid > nitenpyram. The moisture content, clay content, and cation exchange capacity showed positive effects on the degradation rate of all the neonicotinoids. The Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) calculated from the adsorption distribution coefficient, organic content, and half-life indicates that, except for thiacloprid, all the neonicotinoids in all the soils are possible leachers, having potentials to permeate into and through groundwater zones.

Spatiotemporal Distribution and Fates of Neonicotinoid Insecticides During the Urban Water Cycle in the Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River, China

Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are the most popular insecticides worldwide, yet their spatiotemporal distribution and fates during the urban water cycle remain limited on a large watershed scale. Thus, we investigated ten kinds of NNIs in surface water from the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and hubs of the urban water cycle in all seasons. In brief, eight out of ten NNIs were detected, and thiamethoxam (THM), imidacloprid (IMI), and dinotefuran (DNT) were the most abundant NNIs in surface water, with concentrations of 0.29-48.15 ng/L, 1.69-20.57 ng/L, and 0.98-25.32 ng/L, respectively. The average concentrations of total NNIs in summer were 1.96-4.41 folds higher than those in other seasons. NNIs in the effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were lower than those in surface water, while the average concentrations of total NNIs in the effluents of industrial WWTPs were 1.56-6.86 folds higher than those in surface water, indicating that insecticide production is an important source for NNIs in surface water. DNT was the most recalcitrant NNI in WWTPs, with an average removal efficiency of 49.89%, while in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), the removal efficiencies of most NNIs were limited, except for clothianidin (CLO) (90%). Risk assessment showed that NNIs posed medium or high risks to aquatic life, and DNT contributed 26.86-51.48% to the cumulative risks of detected NNIs. This study investigates the spatiotemporal distribution and risks of NNIs and provides information for the supervision of NNIs in the Yangtze River basin, China.

Between 2018 and 2021, 148 water samples from rivers to inshore and offshore seawater in Laizhou Bay, China were collected to investigate the presence of eight NEOs and fipronil and its metabolites (FIPs). Significant seasonal variations in NEOs were observed under the influence of different cultivation practices and climatic conditions, with higher levels in the summer than in the spring. The average concentrations of total neonicotinoids (ΣNEOs) and ∑FIPs decreased from rivers (63.64 ng/L, 2.41 ng/L) to inshore (22.62 ng/L, 0.14 ng/L) and offshore (4.48 ng/L, 0.10 ng/L) seawater of Laizhou Bay. The average concentrations of ΣNEOs decreased by 85.3% from 2018 to 2021. The predominant insecticides in the study area were acetamiprid, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and fipronil sulfone, with a gradual shift toward low-toxicity and environmentally friendly species over time. Influenced by agricultural intensity, ∑NEOs were mostly distributed in the Yellow River, Xiaoqing River, and their estuaries, where they pose chronic ecological risks. However, FIP exhibited high risk in certain rivers and sewage treatment plants owing to the use of animal repellents or landscape gardening insecticides. This study provides evidence of the transfer of NEOs and FIPs from rivers to the ocean and also clarifies their transition dynamics and changes in risk levels from rivers to oceans. Additionally, the study offers data support for identifying critical pesticide control areas.

Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides are among the most used insecticides and their residues are frequently found in surface water due to their persistence and mobility. Neonicotinoid insecticides exhibit toxicity to a wide range of aquatic invertebrates at environmentally relevant levels, and therefore their contamination in surface water is of significant concern. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of six neonicotinoids in a large wetland system, the Prado Wetlands, in Southern California, and further evaluated the wetlands' efficiency at removing these insecticides. Total neonicotinoid concentrations in water ranged from 3.17 to 46.9 ng L −1 at different locations within the wetlands, with imidacloprid and dinotefuran among the most detected. Removal was calculated based on concentrations as well as mass flux. The concentration-based removal values for a shallow pond (vegetation-free), moderately vegetated cells, densely vegetated cells, and the entire wetland train were 16.9%, 34.2%, 90.2%, and 61.3%, respectively. Principal component analysis revealed that pH and temperature were the primary factors affecting neonicotinoids removal. Results from this study demonstrated the ubiquitous presence of neonicotinoids in surface water impacted by urban runoff and wastewater effluent and highlighted the efficiency of wetlands in removing these trace contaminants due to concerted effects of uptake by wetland plants, photolysis, and microbial degradation.

Abstract:Neonicotinoids are widely used to control insect pests in agriculture. Their presence in the environment can affect the health of non-target insects and aquatic animals. The behaviour of four neonicotinoids, namely imidacloprid, acetamiprid, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam, has been investigated in soils with contrasting characteristics to understand their migration in soil and ecological risk. Among the study neonicotinoids, thiamethoxam and thiacloprid were found to be the least and most sorbed neonicotinoids by all the soils, respectively (up to 186 time greater adsorption of thiacloprid), and their uptake was affected by the content of organic matter in the soil. Leaching studies in columns confirmed that thiamethoxam leached out of the soils readily, pointing out to a relatively high risk of ground water contamination with possible ecological impact when thiamethoxam is used in soils with low organic matter. In soil column studies, the soil with the lowest organic matter presents the greatest residue of neonicotinoids in the sub-surface (≤5 cm). In contrast the soil richer in organic matter presented most of the contamination deeper down in the column; a factor to be considered in the remediation from soil.

Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) have been widely used to control insect pests, while their environmental residues and associated hazardous impacts on human and ecosystem health have attracted increasing attention worldwide. In this study, we examined the current levels and associated spatial and temporal patterns of NNIs in multiple environmental media across China. Concentrations of NNIs in surface water, sediment, and soil were in the range of 9.94–755 ng·L −1 , 0.07–8.30 ng·g −1 DW, and 0.009–356 ng·g −1 DW, respectively. The high levels of NNIs in surface water, such as in Yangtze River (755 ng·L −1 ), North River (539 ng·L −1 ), Nandu River (519 ng·L −1 ), and Minjiang River (514 ng·L −1 ), were dominated by imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid due to their extensive use. The levels of NNIs in sediments were relatively low, and the highest concentration (8.30 ng·g −1 DW) was observed in Dongguan ditch. Sediment–water exchange calculated from fugacity fraction indicated that NNIs in sediment can be released back into the water due to their high solubility and low K OW . Soils from agricultural zones contained the largest residual NNIs, with imidacloprid concentrations in cultivated soil reaching 119 ng·g −1 DW. The calculated leaching potential showed that clothianidin has the highest migration potential to deep soil or groundwater. The monitored data of NNIs presented a decreasing trend from 2016 to 2018, which might be caused by the implementation of relevant control policies for NNI applications. The high levels of NNIs mainly occurred in southern China due to frequent agricultural activities and warm and humid meteorological conditions. The results from this study improve our understanding of the pollution levels and environmental behavior of NNIs in different environmental media across China and provide new knowledge that is needed for making future control policies for NNIs production and application.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Long-term monitoring data is helpful to understand the fluctuation of susceptibility and pattern of cross resistance in insecticide resistance management. After the occurrence of imidacloprid resistance, the brown planthopper (BPH) has gradually developed resistance to thiamethoxam and clothianidin since 2010, but not to dinotefuran and nitenpyram. Here, we analyzed susceptibilities data of five neonicotinoids during 2005-2017 in East Asia and Vietnam to conduct cross-resistance patterns among neonicotinoids. To determine the factors of development of cross resistance in laboratory bioassays, we used the imidacloprid resistant and control strains that were selected from filed populations in the Philippines and Vietnam. RESULTS The Linear Mixed Models (LMM) analyses of insecticide susceptibility data showed that the slope values of imidacloprid resistance effects were 0.68 and 1.09 for resistance to thiamethoxam and clothianidin, respectively. Laboratory bioassay results showed that the LD50 values for thiamethoxam and clothianidin in resistant strains (1.4-5.5 mu g g(-1)) were 3.2-16.4 times higher than those in the control strains (0.28-1.5 mu g g(-1)). However, the increase in the LD50 values for imidacloprid was not related to that for dinotefuran and nitenpyram based on the results of the LMM analysis and laboratory bioassay. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that the development of imidacloprid resistance result in strong-cross resistance to some neonicotinoids, thiamethoxam and clothianidin, but not to others, dinotefuran and nitenpyram. We anticipate that our findings will be a starting point for understanding mechanism of the different trend of cross resistance by analyzing long-term susceptibility data and laboratory bioassays in insect pests. Abstract:Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) have attracted particular attention in recent years due to their wide occurrence and potential impacts on the ecosystem and human health. This study aimed to compare the composition and level of NEOs in soils of different land use types. Two rounds of sampling were performed in Tianjin, China, with 158 soil samples in fall and 61 soil samples in spring collected from five types of land, i.e., greenhouse, orchard, farm, park and residential area. The concentrations of eight NEOs, i.e., imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), thiamethoxam (THX), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THA), dinotefuran (DIN), nitenpyram (NIT) and flonicamid (FLO), were analyzed in the soil samples using LC-MS/MS. Six NEOs were detected, with IMI, ACE and THX being the most frequently detected ones. Concentrations of NEOs (arithmetic means in fall and spring, respectively) in greenhouse were the highest (2.52×102 and 4.59×102 ng g−1), followed by in orchard (35.1 and 1.31×102 ng g−1), park (50.4 and 1.02×102 ng g−1), residential area (20.2 and 1.38×102 ng g−1) and farm (25.5 and 84.2 ng g−1). The contribution of individual NEO varied in soils of different land use types. Both IMI and THX were largely used in greenhouse, while IMI was the main NEO in the other four lands. The NEO levels in soils planted with different crops varied greatly. Extremely high levels of NEOs (>103 ng g−1) were observed in soils planted with watermelon, tomato and peach in greenhouse. The ubiquitous presence of NEOs in soils deserves more attention, particularly in greenhouse.

Abstract:Neonicotinoids (NEOs) and fipronil (FIP) are ubiquitous in aquatic environment, yet the transformation and water-sediment exchange are largely unknown for these systemic insecticides and their transformation products (TPs). Herein, occurrence, field-based partitioning coefficients, and fugacity fractions ( ff ) of NEOs, FIP, and their TPs were analyzed in the drainage and receiving rivers near a rice paddy field. NEOs and FIPs were frequently detected in the sediments with concentrations of TPs being often higher than the parent compounds. Average ff values of NEOs (0.944–1.00) were larger than those of FIPs (0.399–0.716), indicating NEOs had a greater tendency to diffuse from sediment into water. Similar as well-studied hydrophobic compounds, hydrophobicity was the main factor impacting the water-sediment exchange of moderately hydrophobic FIPs. Alternatively, electrostatic interactions governed the fate of hydrophilic NEOs in water-sediment system. The log K d values of NEOs were positively correlated with their N/C ratios ( p < 0.05), possibly because the negatively charged sediments (zeta potential were from −19.1 ± 0.6 to −5.84 ± 0.57 mV) generated electrostatic attraction with amino functional group. Our study highlighted the ubiquitousness of TPs and distinct water-sediment interaction for moderately hydrophobic and hydrophilic insecticides in an agriculture-dominated watershed.
