Abstract:Accurate and reliable non-contact temperature sensors are imperative for industrial production and scientific research. Here, Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors were studied as an optical thermometry material. The typical hydrothermal method was used to synthesize hexagonal Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors and the morphology was approximately rod-like. The up-conversion emissions of the samples were located at 475, 520, 550, 650, 692 and 800 nm. Thermo-responsive emissions from the samples were monitored to evaluate the relative sensing sensitivity. The thermal coupled energy level- and non-thermal coupled energy level-based luminescence intensity ratio thermometry of the sample demonstrated that these two methods can be used to test temperature. Two green emissions (520 and 550 nm), radiated from 2H11/2/4S3/2 levels, were monitored, and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.013 K−1 at 297 K. The emissions located in the first biological window (650, 692 and 800 nm) were monitored and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.027 (R692/650) and 0.028 K−1 (R692/800) at 297 K, respectively. These results indicate that Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors have potential applications for temperature determination in the visible and the first biological window ranges.

Ambient- and calcination- temperature induced color-tunable upconversion luminescence in Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped Y2(MoO4)3 phosphors for optical thermometer

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+)-doped upconversion luminescent (UCL) materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) property are endowed an exciting thermal enhancement performance. Hitherto, selectively thermal enhancement for the multi-narrow-band emissions of phosphor with NTE property is not implemented. Herein, Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor synthesized by the modified sol-gel method is explored in selectively enhanced green emission (Er3+: 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) due to the formation of Yb-MoO4 dimer at high ambient-temperature. The 54-fold selectively enhancement of green emission is obtained from 298 K to 523 K. In addition, the influences of dopant-concentration and calcination-temperature on UCL properties are analyzed. Accordingly, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) for 2H11/2/2F9/2 and 4S3/2/2F9/2 as well as (2H11/2 + 4S3/2)/2F9/2, the optimal relative sensitivity of temperature sensing in the Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ sample could reach 0.14 K−1 at 298 K. All these indicate that this Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ material is a promising candidate for high-sensitivity optical temperature sensing.

Synthesis and luminescence properties of Yb3+/Er3+-doped Bi2 (MoO4)3-z(WO4)z phosphors for optical thermometry

Abstract:Yb3+/Er3+-doped Bi2(MoO4)3-z(WO4)z phosphors were synthesized by hydrothermal method combined with subsequent calcination. Under the excitation of 980 nm light source, Bi2(MoO4)3: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors exhibit strong upconversion green light and weak red light emission. By doping WO42- in Bi2(MoO4)3: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors, it makes the upconversion luminescence intensity of the phosphors significantly enhanced, which is 42 times higher than that of the undoped WO42- phosphors. With the increase of WO42- doping content, the color coordinates of Bi2(MoO4)3-z(WO4)z: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors finally fall at (0.2352, 0.7274), which is closer to the standard green CIE coordinates. The maximum CP of WO42- doped phosphors is as high as 116.68%, which is 74.44% higher than that of undoped WO42- phosphors. Based on the thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) of Er3+ (2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) in Bi2(MoO4)2.7(WO4)0.3: 14%Yb3+, 3%Er3+ phosphor, the SR reaches the maximum as 0.0081 K-1 at 323 K, the SA reaches the maximum as 0.0099 K-1 at 398 K. The obtained Bi2(MoO4)3-z(WO4)z: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors are suitable for upconversion luminescent materials for green displays and have potential advantages in optical temperature measurement.

Enhanced Optical Temperature Sensing Performance Based on Dual Emission Centers of Y2O3: Yb3+, Tm3+, Ho3+ Upconversion Phosphor

Abstract:Y2O3: 5%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+, z%Ho3+ (z=0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0) upconversion luminescent materials were synthesized by CO2 laser zone melting method. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of the samples were recorded with the excitation of 980 nm laser, and the energy transfer processes among doped rare earth (RE) ions were analyzed. The introduction of Ho3+ ions into Y2O3: 5%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+ gave the samples four distinct UCL bands, including blue, green, red, and infrared emission bands. The temperature sensing characteristics based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions were studied, and the derived maximum relative sensitivity (SR) reached impressive value of 0.0138 K-1 (298 K). Compared to the materials doped with single emission center of either Tm3+ or Ho3+ ions, the luminescent material co-doped with both Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions exhibited higher sensitivity while maintaining a wide temperature measurement range. The research results indicate that Y2O3: Yb3+, Tm3+, Ho3+ upconversion phosphor promises broad application prospects in optical temperature measurement.
Strong red upconversion luminescence and optical thermometry of Yb3+/Er3+ Co-doped β-Ba2ScAlO5 phosphor

Abstract:Near infrared-to-red upconversion phosphors of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped β-Ba2ScAlO5 through equivalent substitution strategy has been prepared. They emit strong red emission at 662 nm under 980 nm NIR laser irradiation. Their red-green integrated intensity ratio can reach up to 82.5. The excitation mechanism of red emission mainly arises from energy transfer that promotes Er3+ from 4I13/2 to 4F9/2 level. The overall emission profile of upconversion luminescence is insensitive to the dopant concentration and pump power. The doping concentrations of Yb3+ and Er3+ in β-Ba2ScAlO5 have been optimized based on the steady state upconversion luminescence and lifetime decay studies. The integrated intensity of the upconverted red emission of β-Ba2ScAlO5:Yb3+, Er3+ displays a linear relationship with the temperature in the wide temperature range from 298 to 523 K, which has promising application in optical thermometry.

Abstract:In order to develop a new up-conversion luminescent temperature measurement material with a garnet structure, Ca3Y2Ge3O12: Er3+, Yb3+ phosphors were prepared by a simple high temperature solid phase method. The structural phase and luminescence characteristics of the samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectra. It can be observed that the characteristic emission of Er3+ ion appears in the sample under 980 nm excitation, and it's up-conversion emission intensity increases with the increase of Yb3+ ion concentration. The maximum relative sensitivity is 1.29 %K−1, 1.09 %K−1 and 1.03 %K−1 based on the different temperature dependence of the thermal coupled energy levels (TCELs), non-thermal coupled energy levels (NTCELs) and the fluorescence lifetime (FL) of 4S3/2 state, respectively. The results show that Ca3Y2Ge3O12: Er3+, Yb3+ phosphor is excellent a material for optical temperature measurement.

Abstract:Luminescence ratiometric thermometry based on rare earth (RE) ions has attracted great interest for the potential applications in many fields. But the improvement of the measurement sensitivity and accuracy is significantly restricted due to the small energy gap between thermally coupled levels (TCL). Here, a strategy striving for good thermometric properties of luminescent materials has been designed by using the phosphors mixture composed of NaY(WO4)2:Nd3+-Yb3+ and NaY(WO4)2:Er3+, which were prepared by secondary sintering method. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, the near-infrared (NIR) emissions (710–920 nm) from Nd3+ ions were effectively strengthened when the temperature increased from 304 to 773 K, whereas Er3+ NIR luminescence centered around 1536 nm was thermally quenched. The remarkably different response of NIR emissions to the thermal variation allowed us to map temperature through the ratiometric method. By optimizing the dopant concentration of rare earth (RE) ions, a maximum sensitivity of 5.14 %/K together with a measurement uncertainty of about 0.1 K is acquired at 304 K, which is superior to the previously reported RE luminescence-based temperature sensors, indicating the approach developed here could pave the way for achieving optical thermometry with desired properties.Under 980 nm laser excitation, NIR emissions from Nd3+ (Yb3+ sensitized) and Er3+ ions, which are separately doped in NaY(WO4)2, present contrary changing tendency with the variation of temperature, allowing highly sensitive ratiometric thermometry via the relevant mixture.<ol class="links-for-figure"><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1002072120304932-fx1_lrg.jpg">Download : Download high-res image (230KB)</a></li><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S1002072120304932-fx1.jpg">Download : Download full-size image</a></li></ol>

Abstract:Lanthanides doped optical materials with temperature sensing property are of great interest for optical thermometry. However, most lanthanides doped luminescent materials for ratiometric thermometer are often accompanied by thermal quenching, which leads to a decrease in temperature sensing performance. Here, Nd3+ doped Yb2Mo3O12 phosphor with near-infrared upconversion emissions has been fabricated. A non-contact thermometer is constructed with the luminescence of Nd3+ ions and the change of the emission peak height ratio of 4F7/2-4I9/2 and 4F5/2-4I9/2 transitions. Interestingly, the intensity of the emission peaks in the prepared phosphor increases with increasing temperature. Avoiding thermal quenching, the thermally enhanced upconversion emission affords high sensing accuracy. The maximum relative and absolute sensitivity was 1.186% and 9.789 × 10−3 K−1, respectively. The results suggest that appropriate emission bands with thermal population are benefit for optical ratiometric thermometers.

Abstract:The Y2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ crystal fiber material has been successfully prepared by laser heated pedestal growth method. The X-ray diffraction results indicate that the prepared Y2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ luminescent material, which is optically transparent under the optical microscope, possesses pure Y2O3 crystal phase. The up-conversion luminescence corresponding to the (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), F-4(9/2)) -> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions were recorded under a 976 nm laser diode excitation. The up-conversion emission intensities from the H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2) and S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions were studied from room temperature to 873 K by fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. It has been found that the prepared Y2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ crystal fiber has high-efficient up-conversion emissions, and effectively improves the temperature measurement accuracy and range, making Y2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ crystal fiber an interesting candidate for optical temperature sensor.
Simultaneous modulation of multicolor upconversion emission and thermal‐sensing performance of Ba5Zn4Y8O21 phosphors

Abstract:In this study, we report the modulation of the emission color and optical temperature‐sensing properties of Er3+ in Ba5Zn4Y8O21 crystals. Er3+ single‐doped Ba5Zn4Y8O21 phosphors showed green emission under 980 nm excitation. When codoping with Yb3+ ions, the red emission component from the Er3+ ions increased significantly, and the sample emission turned orange. Yb3+–Er3+ codoped Ba5Zn4Y8O21 samples exhibited bright red emission with a maximum IR/IG value of 89.30 when excited with a longer wavelength, 1550 nm. A broad range of emission colors could be modulated by adjusting the dopant concentration. The possible modulation mechanisms and upconversion processes were analyzed based on the luminescence decay curves and power‐dependent emission intensities. Furthermore, the optical temperature‐sensing properties of Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+ and Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+, Yb3+ phosphors with thermal coupled energy levels (TCELs) and nonthermal coupled energy levels (N‐TCELs) of Er3+ ions were investigated using fluorescence intensity ratio technique. Based on the TCELs (2H11/2/4S3/2), the Er3+ single‐doped and Yb3+–Er3+ codoped Ba5Zn4Y8O21 phosphors present the similar optical thermometry behaviors under 980 and 1550 nm excitation. The highest absolute (Sa) and relative sensitivity (Sr) are 3.95 × 10−3 K−1 at 573 K and 1.31% K−1 at 303 K, respectively. Based on N‐TCELs (4F9/2/2H11/2), the temperature‐sensing performance depends on the Yb3+ dopant and excitation wavelength. The highest values for Sa and Sr reached 5.46 K−1 at 303 K and 1.38% K−1 at 573 K for the Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+, Yb3+ phosphor under 1550 nm excitation, respectively. In addition, the present phosphor exhibited high stability and repeatability over a wide temperature range. These results indicate that the multicolor modulation upconversion Ba5Zn4Y8O21‐based phosphor can be considered a potential reusable optical thermometer for noncontact temperature detection.

Abstract:Ratiometric thermometry is among the emerging applications in phosphor materials. Particularly, the technique of ultrafine-space thermometry has garnered significant attention in bio-imaging. Near-infrared (NIR) light, with its high tissue permeability, serves not only as an excitation source for up-conversion photoluminescence (UCPL) but also induces down-shifting photoluminescence (DSPL) at longer wavelengths. These luminescence mechanisms offer promising avenues for bio-available thermometry. In this study, we focused on highly bio-adaptable yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), Zr 0.85 Y 0.15 O 1.925 , and prepared phosphor materials with yttrium partially substituted by ytterbium (Yb), erbium (Er), and thulium (Tm) using a hydrothermal reaction method. The synthesized YSZ:Yb-Er/Tm phosphors with different Yb 3+ contents showed multi-line UCPL in visible to NIR region due to Er 3+ and Tm 3+ ions under the laser irradiation at 980 nm, particularly it show the strong UCPL at 800 nm originating from Tm3+. Furthermore, under the same excitation conditions, the phosphor exhibited not only UCPL but also DSPL due to 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/2 transition of Er 3+ in the deeper NIR region of 1400-1700 nm. Interestingly, these DSPLs exhibit significant PL enhancement (anti-thermal quenching; anti-TQ) with increasing temperature. The thermometric properties based on the lumiunescence intensity ratio (LIR) of UCPL, which shows normal thermal quenching, and DSPL, which shows anti-thermal quenching, demonstrated excellent temperature sensitivity (Sr > 3 %K -1 @283 K) and temperature resolution (δT < 0.1 K @283 K). This study suggests that the LIR thermometry technique using UCPL/DSPL, specifically anti-TQ/normal-TQ, can contribute to further advancements in luminescence-based temperature measurement.

Abstract:Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Ln 3+ (Ln = Ho, Tm, Er) phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method with further calcination. The crystal structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of rare earth ion interaction in the Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Ln 3+ phosphors on the upconversion (UC) luminescence properties and energy transfer process at different doping concentrations were discussed. It is concluded that by doping Ho 3+ , Tm 3+ , and Er 3+ in the Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 host, the phosphors emit orange-yellow, blue and green light, respectively, and the energy transfer from Yb 3+ → Ho 3+ /Er 3+ and Yb 3+ → Tm 3+ is a two and three photon process, respectively. Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser, by changing the Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ ratio in doped Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , we have realized the transition of phosphors from cold white light to warm white light. The temperature sensitivity of the 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 energy levels of Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Er 3+ in the range of 323–573 K was studied by the FIR technology. The experimental results show that the maximum absolute sensitivity was 0.0081 K −1 at 573 K and the maximum relative sensitivity was 0.01 K −1 at 323 K. Compared with other materials, the Er 3+ doped Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 phosphor is an excellent optical temperature sensing material.

Abstract:Rare earth ions doped luminescent materials are considered as the potential candidates with a wide range of applications because of their unique optical characteristics. In this work, the single-phase Yb3+-Er3+ and Yb3+-Tm3+ co-doped La1.55SiO4.33 (LS) phosphors of hexagonal system were reported for optical thermometer. Three characteristic emissions of Er3+ were observed at 521, 553 and 659 nm in the LS:Yb3+,Er3+ under 980 nm excitation, which are assigned to the 2H11/2→4I15/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions, respectively. In the LS:Yb3+,Tm3+ phosphors, one can find two strong emissions at 474 and 790 nm and two weak emissions at 648 and 685 nm. Their upconversion (UC) luminescence mechanisms were studied from the pump-power-dependent spectra. When the samples were measured at various temperatures, the spectral features revealed that different fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) strategies can be used to character their optical temperature-sensing behaviors. The sensor sensitivities by using thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) and non-TCELs were determined from the temperature-dependent UC emission spectra, which have been improved compared with those of some other reported optical temperature-sensing luminescent materials. The device fabrication indicated that the developed UC phosphors are promising for applications in optical thermometer.

Abstract:Here, a series of Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+(RE=Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors are prepared by solid state reaction. The upconversion and downshift luminescence properties of them are investigated under 980 nm excitation. The bright blue light fromTm3+ ion, green and red lights of Ho3+(Er3+) ions are observed. The near-infrared (NIR-I,~850 nm) of Tm3+, NIR-II(Er3+:~1550 nm;Tm3+:~1783 nm) and NIR-III(Ho3+:~2050 nm) are acquired. In particular, the dramatic thermal enhancement phenomenon of visible and NIR is obtained from Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+(RE=Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors. Among them, the green light intensity of Er3+ ions is increased 26.77 times from 303 to 573 K. The NIR-II emission band(~1783 nm) intensity of Tm3+ ions at 533 K reaches 168.7 times in comparison with that at 313 K. The possible thermal enhancement mechanism is illustrated based on the negative thermal expansion (NTE) and Frenkel defect of Y2W3O12 host. At last, the optical temperature sensing performances of Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+(RE=Er/Ho/Tm) samples are investigated according to luminescence intensity dependence relationship on temperature, respectively. The maximum value of SR reaches 4.24% K-1 at 353 K for Y2W3O12:Yb3+/Ho3+ phosphor. The results indicate that the Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+ (RE=Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors possess anti-thermal quenching properties and are suitable for developing optical temperature sensor.

Excitation wavelength and pumping power dependent temperature sensing property of Nd3+/Yb3+/Er3+ triply-doped LaNbO4 phosphor

Abstract:Optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technology between the thermally coupled energy levels of Er3+ has become a research hotspot, but it is often limited by excitation conditions, which reduces its universality and reliability. In this work, Nd3+/Yb3+/Er3+ triply-doped LaNbO4 phosphor with excellent up-conversion (UC) luminescence characteristic and reliable temperature sensing sensitivity has been prepared by solid-state reaction method. Intense green and weak red UC emissions were gained under 808 nm and 980 nm excitations. The temperature dependent UC luminescence property and temperature sensing behavior of the sample has been investigated. The results demonstrated that the intensity ratio of the two green emissions was insensitive to the excitation wavelength and pumping power of the lasers, and the maximum absolute sensitivity was derived to be 0.91 % K−1 at 481 K. This work provides a new material with reliable and high temperature sensing sensitivity for optical thermometers.

Abstract:A series of LuYO3: Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors with different Yb3+ concentrations were prepared through a melting zone method with CO2 laser. The samples emit bright up-conversion luminescence (UCL) under a 980 nm laser. The UCL intensity and the luminescence color change significantly when Yb3+ concentration changes. Besides, when doped with 3 mol% Yb3+, the UCL intensity is maximal. The thermal sensing properties of LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) were studied using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method from 298 K to 848 K. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.0050 K-1 at 366 K and 0.0167 K-1 at 298 K, respectively. Thus, the LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) fluorescent material is very suitable for thermal sensing because of the wide temperature range and the high sensitivity.

Abstract:Yb3+-Er3+ co-doped K2GdF5 up-conversion phosphor was successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The phase purity and structure of the sample were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. The sample emitted orange light at room temperature and its up-conversion spectra at different temperatures were recorded under the excitation of a 980 nm diode laser. The energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ notably enhanced the up-conversion luminescence intensity. The possible up-conversion mechanisms and processes were proposed based on the power dependence of the luminescence intensities. The temperature-dependent up-conversion luminescence and temperature sensing performances of the sample were discussed according to the fluorescence intensity ratio of green emissions originating from 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ in the range from 307 K to 570 K under the excitation of 980 nm laser with power of 260 mW. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratio on temperature was fitted with an exponential function and the effective energy difference obtained was 690 cm−1, which further gave a relative temperature sensitivity of 1.1%/K at 307 K. The results suggested that the Yb3+-Er3+ co-doped K2GdF5 sample is a promising candidate for optical temperature sensor.

Abstract:A simple optical fiber temperature sensing system based on up-conversion luminescence of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Gd2O3 phosphors is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The Gd2O3: 1 mol% Er3+, 1 mol% Yb3+ phosphors are synthesized by traditional sol-gel method. A sandwich structure fabricated by two fiber connectors, one of which is deposited the fluorescent material cured with ultraviolet adhesive on the surface, is used as the sensing probe. Temperature measurement is achieved using the two green emissions, generated by Gd2O3: 1 mol% Er3+, 1 mol% Yb3+ phosphors, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. When the Gd2O3: 1 mol% Er3+, 1 mol% Yb3+ phosphor is excited by the 980 nm laser with the output power of 73 mW, the intense green emissions are observed and change with temperature. The temperature sensing characteristics are experimentally studied in the temperature range from 253 to 413 K, with the maximum absolute sensitivity of 4.15% K−1 at 413 K, the maximum relative sensitivity of 2.28% K−1 at 253 K and the maximum relative error of 0.43%. The proposed optical fiber temperature sensor not only offers excellent reversibility and stability, but also significantly contributes to accurate and remote temperature measurement in harsh environments.

Abstract:Rare earth ions activated nanomaterials have been extensively considered as promising candidates for optical thermometry due to their unique photoluminescence characteristics. Nevertheless, thermally coupled levels-based thermometers are suffering from low sensitivity because of the restriction of small energy gap. Herein, the phonon-assisted energy transfer from Yb3+ to Nd3+ in Y2O3 nanoparticles, which makes the near infrared emissions of Nd3+ and Yb3+ ions respond to temperature inversely, is utilized to achieve sensitive temperature measurement via the ratiometric method. When pumped by 980 nm continuous wave laser, the multizone thermometry is performed owing to the different dependence of energy transfer on the temperature. The maximum relative sensitivities achieved in the temperature ranges of 423–773 K and 303–333 K are both approximately 2.3% K−1, which are superior to most previously reported luminescence-based temperature sensors. In addition, it is found that the measurement sensitivity is significantly influenced by the laser-induced heating effect especially at relatively low temperatures. Under the excitation of 980 nm square wave laser, the relative sensitivity is enhanced from 2.3% to 2.9% K−1 in the physiological temperature region. These findings can provide an effective pathway to improving the thermometric behavior and expanding the application of luminescence temperature sensing in various fields.

Abstract:Up-conversion fluorescent materials serve a significant function as the detection materials of temperature sensors. In this study, a series of green-emitting LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors applied in optical temperature sensing detection were successfully synthesized via the solid-state process in air. The crystal structure, luminescence properties, luminescence mechanism, and optical temperature sensing properties of samples were investigated. LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphor with excitation at 980 nm emits pronounced green emissions owing to the 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions. The whole emission processes of LiLu0.72W2O8:0.24 Yb3+, 0.04Er3+ sample are all two-photon processes. Moreover, we apply thermal coupling levels (2H11/2, 4S3/2) for temperature sensing and the value of sensing sensitivity can reach the maximum of about 1.41% K−1. All the experimental results imply that LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors show good potential in temperature sensing.
