Abstract:Based on quality-controlled daily station data, long-term trends and variability of total and extreme precipitation indices during 1955–2014 were examined for Thailand. An analysis showed that while precipitation events have been less frequent across most of Thailand, they have become more intense. Moreover, the indices measuring the magnitude of intense precipitation events indicate a trend toward wetter conditions, with heavy precipitation contributing a greater fraction to annual totals. One consequence of this change is the increased frequency and severity of flash floods as recently evidenced in many parts of Thailand. On interannual-to-interdecadal time scales, significant relationships between variability of precipitation indices and the indices for the state of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) were found. These results provide additional evidence that large-scale climate phenomena in the Pacific Ocean are remote drivers of variability in Thailand's total and extreme precipitation. Thailand tended to have greater amounts of precipitation and more extreme events during La Niña years and the PDO cool phase, and vice versa during El Niño years and the PDO warm phase. Another noteworthy finding is that in 2011 Thailand experienced extensive flooding in a year characterized by exceptionally extreme precipitation events. Our results are consistent with the regional studies for the Asia-Pacific Network. However, this study provides a more detailed picture of coherent trends at a station scale and documents changes that have occurred in the twenty-first century, both of which help to inform decisions concerning effective management strategies.

Abstract:El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a significant form of internal climate variability resulting from the interactions between the atmosphere and ocean in the tropical Pacific. It is a main driver of interannual rainfall variability in Northeast Thailand, where rainfed agriculture is one of the largest economic sectors. Therefore, it is essential to understand the ability of climate models to simulate the basic characteristics of ENSO phenomena and project its impacts in the region. We evaluated the ability of 12 climate models from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and their 12 predecessor models from the fifth phase (CMIP5) to simulate ENSO and its impact on rainfall over Northeast Thailand using thirteen performance metrics under seven criteria considering the simulation of observed indices, pattern, variability, peaks and seasonal phase locking of ENSO. The intensity and frequency of the ENSO events were projected for the near future (2021–2050). Although six CMIP5 and eight CMIP6 models performed well in simulating half of the ENSO evaluation metrics (performance score > 40%) such as ENSO variability, seasonal phase locking, location of ENSO variability, and dominant secondary peak in SST variability, we did not find very compelling evidence of improved ENSO simulation in CMIP6 compared to CMIP5 models. However, high rainfall in extreme La Niña events and low rainfall in extreme El Niño events with rainfall anomalies of 0.4 mm/day and − 0.3 mm/day, respectively were observed over Northeast Thailand due to the interaction of the easterly winds from the Pacific Ocean with the south-westerly flow from the Indian Ocean. The corresponding sea level pressure maps further confirmed the mechanisms associated with this phenomenon over the region. The ensemble averages of models from both phases predicted an increase in intensity (by 32–47%) and frequency (by 10–50%) in the near-future (2021–2050) with a slightly higher increase by CMIP6 models compared to CMIP5 models under medium and high emission scenarios.

Abstract:Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is mainly driven by hydrological processes; climate oscillation can affect regional water cycle processes. However, the relationship between climate oscillation and NPS pollution is still unclear, which increases the difficulty of water quality prediction and management. In this study, Mann-Kendall test and wavelet transform were adopted to investigate the teleconnection between ENSO (El Niño–Southern Oscillation) phenomenon and riverine NPS load dynamics in an agricultural watershed of Southeast China from 2003 to 2016. Results showed that annual precipitation, streamflow, and riverine nutrient load increased significantly during the study period. The change point for long-term riverine TN load and TP load appeared in 2009 and 2007, respectively. Rainfall, streamflow, nutrient loads, and Niño 3.4 sea temperature (SST) shared a common periodicity of 10–16 months. The southern oscillation index (SOI) and Niño 3.4 SST shared a common periodicity of 28–36 months. Moreover, Niño 3.4 SST showed a positive correlation with riverine nutrient loads at a periodicity of 10–16 months, while SOI showed a weakly negative correlation with riverine nutrient loads at a periodicity of 28–36 months. These findings indicate that the increasing frequency of warm ENSO events would enhance the risk of nutrient export to rivers in Southeast China and more attention should be paid to large-scale climate oscillation in the prediction of agricultural nutrient pollution and management of water quality in agricultural watersheds.
Effects of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on rainfall anomalies in Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract:El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a global climate phenomenon recognised for its effects on regional climates and irregularities in climate variability worldwide. In this article, the impact of ENSO on rainfall anomalies in Central Java, Indonesia, was investigated from 1990 to 2019. The Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) was used to determine the ENSO phase, and rainfall estimates by the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) and rainfall records from several meteorological stations were used to identify the anomalies. The anomalies were explained in relation to the degree of strength of El Niño and La Niña events. The results showed that strong El Niño caused a decrease in annual rainfall intensities to the entire region, particularly in the mountainous area in the western part (Pemalang, Pekalongan, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara) and northeast part (Jepara, Kudus, Pati). The decrease in annual rainfall reached 1300 mm during strong El Niño. The moderate and weak El Niño also affect those areas, while the mountainous area in the west part and southwest part is not affected. The moderate and weak El Niño contributes to decreasing rainfall of up to 900 mm, with notable differences in the affected area. Strong La Niña affects the entire study area, with increasing annual rainfall up to 1700 mm, while moderate and weak La Niña less affects the region, and a notable difference was not identified. The result also shows that the spatial distribution of this decrease in rainfall is across the northern regions and became increasingly less towards the south during strong El Niño. Conversely, strong La Niña increased the rainfall intensity, starting from the south and weakening northward. The effect enhanced significantly with La Niña's strength, especially on the southern coast of the study area.

Impact of monsoon teleconnections on regional rainfall and vegetation dynamics in Haryana, India

Abstract:Our study has investigated the impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on spatio-temporal dynamics of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) as well as vegetation for a period of 1980 to 2019 at regional scale in Haryana, India. The gridded rainfall datasets of India Meteorological Department (IMD) were examined on monthly and seasonal scale using various statistical methods like mean climatology, coefficient of variation, slope of linear, Sen's slope, Mann-Kendall Z statistic, and hierarchical cluster analysis. The influence of ENSO on spatial distribution of ISMR was observed, where we found increasing and decreasing rainfall patterns during La Niña and El Niño years, respectively. We attempted to establish a link between ISMR and various teleconnections using time series of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Physical Sciences Laboratory, and statistically significant and positive correlation was observed with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), whereas significantly negative correlations were observed with SST of Niño 3, Niño 3.4, and Niño 4 regions. The gridded datasets of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalysis V5 (ERA5) were used to evaluate the influence of ENSO on atmospheric dynamics using lower and upper tropospheric wind circulation (850 hPa and200 hpa), vertically integrated moisture transport (VIMT), and surface moisture flux (SMF). We have used satellite-based normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) datasets of the Global Inventory Monitoring and Modeling System (GIMMS) to investigate the impact of ENSO on vegetation dynamics of Haryana and found that NDVI values were higher and lower in case of La Niña and El Niño years, respectively.
Inter‐decadal Variations in El Niño–Southern Oscillation Impacts on the Autumn Precipitation in the Eastern China

Abstract:By using the observation, reanalysis data and numerical simulation, the inter-decadal variations in El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impacts on the eastern China (EC) precipitation during its developing autumn in the past 65 years have been investigated. Results show that ENSO is related to the significant dipole precipitation anomalies in EC in the early decades (1951-1981); El Nino/La Nina introduces more/less precipitation in the southern EC, but less/more in the northern EC. However, the significant dipole pattern disappears in the recent decades (1985-2015), mainly owing to loss of the significant positive influences of La Nina on the northern EC precipitation. Comparison of the atmospheric circulation anomalies in East Asia related to La Nina in the two periods shows that there are anticyclonic circulation anomalies in the northeastern Asia near Japan in the first period, while they shift to Mongolia in the second period. Hence, in the first period, the northern EC is under the influences of anomalous southwesterlies along the southwestern flank of the anticyclonic circulation anomalies that advect more moisture from the south to the northern EC and lead to more precipitation there. In contrast, in the second period, the northern EC is under the influences of anomalous northeasterlies along the southeastern edge of the anticyclonic circulation anomalies near Mongolia that impede the northwards transport of moisture and are not conducive to surplus precipitation. The westwards shift of the anticyclonic circulation anomalies may be closely related to the higher SST and thus convective anomalies related to La Nina in the tropical western North Pacific (WNP) east of the Philippines in the second than the first periods. The sensitivity experiment forced by the positive SST anomalies in the tropical WNP comparable to the observed in an atmospheric general circulation model can successfully simulate the anticyclonic circulation anomalies around Mongolia.
Similar teleconnection patterns of ENSO-NAO and ENSO-precipitation in Colombia: linear and non-linear relationships

Abstract:The Central-Pacific (CP) and Eastern-Pacific (EP) types of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and their ocean-atmosphere effect cause diverse responses in the hydroclimatological patterns of specific regions. Given the impact of ENSO diversity on the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), this study aimed to determine the relationship between the ENSO-NAO teleconnection and the ENSO-influenced precipitation patterns in Colombia during the December-February period. Precipitation data from 1981 to 2023, obtained from the Climate Hazards Group (CHIRPS), were analyzed using nine ENSO and NAO indices spanning from 1951 to 2023. Using Pearson's correlation and mutual information (MI) techniques, nine scenarios were devised, encompassing the CP and EP ENSO events, neutral years, and volcanic eruptions. The results suggest a shift in the direction of the ENSO-NAO relationship when distinguishing between the CP and EP events. Higher linear correlations were observed in the CP ENSO scenarios (r > 0.65) using the MEI and BEST indices, while lower correlations were observed when considering EP events along with the Niño 3 and Niño 1.2 indices. MI show difference in relationships based on the event type and the ENSO index used. Notably, an increase in the non-linear relationship was observed for the EP scenarios with respect to correlation. Both teleconnections followed a similar pattern, exhibiting a more substantial impact during CP ENSO events. This highlights the significance of investigating the impacts of ENSO on hydrometeorological variables in the context of adapting to climate change, while acknowledging the intricate diversity inherent to the ENSO phenomenon.
The teleconnection of the two types of ENSO and Indian Ocean Dipole on Southeast Asian autumn rainfall anomalies

Abstract:The teleconnections of the two types of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) on autumn rainfall over Southeast Asia and its 20 subregions are investigated during 1979–2019. Under El Niño, autumn rainfall reduces over the West Philippines and most of the Maritime Continent, while Indochina experiences alternating dry and wet conditions. Under El Niño Modoki, more rainfall reduction is evident in Indochina, East Philippines, Malay Peninsula, and North Sumatra. Conversely, El Niño Modoki causes less dry conditions than El Niño in southern Southeast Asia. La Niña and La Niña Modoki tend to increase autumn rainfall, except in Sumatra and some specific areas in Indochina. However, La Niña Modoki causes notably more rainfall than La Niña in northern Southeast Asia, including Indochina (except Myanmar), the Malay Peninsula, and Philippines. Although insignificant, La Niña Modoki also reproduces more rainfall in eastern Indonesia, whereas displaying less rain in the central and western Maritime Continent. These distinctions of ENSO Modoki compared to ENSO are driven by different sea surface temperature anomalies patterns, leading to a more northward Walker circulation and the presence/strength of an anomalous Philippine Sea cyclone. Positive IOD (negative IOD) also generally results in drier (wetter) autumn, with the rainfall anomaly patterns of positive IOD/negative IOD exhibiting similarities to El Niño/La Niña. However, compared to both types of ENSO, IOD impacts are weaker over Pacific-facing subregions while only stronger in specific equatorial Indian Ocean-facing subregions. This stronger impact comes from reduced (intensified) moisture transport from the equatorial Indian Ocean to southwestern Southeast Asia under positive IOD (negative IOD).

Abstract:The dry and wet years in Southeast Asia have been identified and tested by using the Precipitation Reconstruction data set (PREC viz.Precipitation Monthly Anomalies Over Global Land Oceans from 1948—2003) on annual and seasonal scales from 1948 to 2002.The relation between rainfall and ENSO events has been studied.The results show that in 1948—1959,except summer,wet years,springs,autumns,and winters were evidently more than dry years,springs,autumns,and winters,respectively;in the 1960's,dry/wet years and seasons were about equal;in the 1970's,wet years and summers were more than dry years and summers,and wet/dry springs,autumn and winters were about the same;1980—1989 was a frequent period of droughts;and 1990—2002 was a frequent period of droughts/floods with dry years more than wet years.Through calculating the precipitation trend coefficient in Southeast Asia,it was found that a decline trend occurred in annual and seasonal rainfalls except winter.
ENSO modulation of seasonal rainfall and extremes in Indonesia

Abstract:This paper provides a detailed description of how ENSO events affect seasonal and extreme precipitation over Indonesia. Daily precipitation data from 97 stations across Indonesia covering the period from 1981 to 2012 were used to investigate the effects of El Niño and La Niña on extreme precipitation characteristics including intensity, frequency and duration, as defined based on a subset of the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI). Although anomalous signals in these three indices were consistent with those of total rainfall, anomalies in the duration of extremes [i.e., consecutive dry days (CDD) and consecutive wet days (CWD)] were much more robust. El Niño impacts were particularly prominent during June–July–August (JJA) and September–October–November (SON), when anomalously dry conditions were experienced throughout the country. However, from SON, a wet anomaly appeared over northern Sumatra, later expanding eastward during December–January–February (DJF) and March–April–May (MAM), creating contrasting conditions of wet in the west and dry in the east. We attribute this apparent eastward expansion of a wet anomaly during El Niño progression to the equatorial convergence of two anti-cyclonic circulations, one residing north of the equator and the other south of the equator. These anti-cyclonic circulations strengthen and weaken according to seasonal changes and their coupling with regional seas, hence shaping moisture transport and convergence. During La Niña events, the eastward expansion of an opposite (i.e., dry) anomaly was also present but less prominent than that of El Niño. We attribute this to differences in regional ocean—atmosphere coupling, which result in the contrasting seasonal evolution of the two corresponding anomalous cyclonic circulations and in turn suggests the strong nonlinearity of El Niño and La Niña responses over the Maritime Continent. Based on the seasonal behaviour of anomalous CDD and CWD, we propose five sub-divisions of the Indonesian region for both El Niño and La Niña.

A Novel ENSO Monitoring Method using Precipitable Water Vapor and Temperature in Southeast China

Abstract:Southeast China, a non-core region influenced by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), has been seldom investigated before. However, the occurrence of ENSO will affect the redistribution of precipitation and the temperature (T) spatial pattern on a global scale. This condition will further lead to flood or drought disasters in Southeast China. Therefore, the method of monitoring the occurrence of ENSO is important and is the focus of this paper. The spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitable water vapor (PWV) and T are first analyzed during ENSO using the empirical orthogonal function (EOF). The results showed that a high correlation spatiotemporal consistency exist between PWV and T. The response thresholds of PWV and T to ENSO are determined by moving the window correlation analysis (MWCA). If the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) at the Niño 3.4 region exceeded the ranges of (−1.17°C, 1.04°C) and (−1.15°C, 1.09°C), it could cause the anomalous change of PWV and T in Southeast China. Multichannel singular spectral analysis (MSSA) is introduced to analyze the multi-type signals (tendency, period, and anomaly) of PWV and T over the period of 1979–2017. The results showed that the annual abnormal signal and envelope line fluctuation of PWV and T agreed well in most cases with the change in SSTA. Therefore, a standard PWV and T index (SPTI) is proposed on the basis of the results to monitor ENSO events. The PWV and T data derived from the grid-based European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) reanalysis products and GNSS/RS stations in Southeast China were used to validate the performance of the proposed SPTI. Experimental results revealed that the time series of average SPTI calculated in Southeast China corresponded well to that of SSTA with a correlation coefficient of 0.66 over the period of 1979–2017. The PWV values derived from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and radiosonde data at two specific stations (WUHN and 45004) were also used to calculate the SPTI. The results showed that the correlation coefficients between SPTI and SSTA were 0.73 and 0.71, respectively. Such results indicate the capacity of the proposed SPTI to monitor the ENSO in Southeast China.

Abstract:<p>Using the reanalysis data and local weather station data, the relationship between El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the summer precipitation over Northwest China (SPNWC) is investigated. A pronounced rainfall response is observed in post‐ENSO summer, especially over North Xinjiang and Yili River valley. A possible mechanism is proposed for such a seasonal lagged impact. El Niño could induce Indian Ocean warming that persists into boreal spring and summer although El Niño itself has dissipated. The warmer Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) would heat the tropospheric atmosphere and elevate the tropical geopotential height at the upper level. As a result, the South Asian High (SAH) exhibits a southward extension due to the increasing geopotential height in its southern flank. A southward displacement of subtropical jet is evident associated with such SAH shift, which further induces a barotropic low pressure anomaly over central Asia. Meanwhile, associated with the southward displacement of subtropical jet, the water vapor from tropical Indian Ocean tends to transport across Iranian Plateau and bring wet and warm air into central Asia. The resultant convergence of water vapor with cold and dry air from high latitude leads to the observed rainfall anomaly to the south and east of Balkhash Lake, explaining the lagged relationship between ENSO and SPNWC. Our results have potential applications on the seasonal prediction of SPNWC.</p>

Abstract:The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are widely recognized as the leading modes of climate variability in the tropics. This paper investigates the impact of different ENSO positions and IOD events on Indonesian rainfall during the period 1950–2021. The ENSO position is determined by the largest value of four Niño indices: Niño 1+2, Niño 3, Niño 3.4, and Niño 4. These ENSO positions are hereafter referred to as El-Niño/La-Niña 1+2, El-Niño/La-Niña 3, El-Niño/La-Niña 3.4, and El-Niño/La-Niña 4, respectively. The Dipole Mode Index (DMI) was used to observe IOD events. Different ENSO positions and IOD events result in different responses to Indonesian rainfall, obtained from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-5 data. The most significant decrease in rainfall occurs during the June-to-Septempber (JJAS) season of El-Niño 3. Conversely, during El-Niño 3.4, rainfall increases in the Sumatra and part of Kalimantan regions. The most significant increase in rainfall occurs during La-Niña 3.4, followed by La-Niña 4, La-Niña 3, and La-Niña 1+2. During a positive IOD phase, the southern part of western Indonesia experiences a decrease in precipitation of more than 30%. A more significant decrease in rainfall (>40%) occurs when a positive IOD co-occurs with El-Niño. During a negative IOD phase, Indonesia's rainfall patterns become more spatially variable. An increase in rainfall is more pronounced when a negative IOD co-occurs with La-Niña. The difference in Indonesian rainfall during different ENSO positions and IOD phases is related to differences in atmosphere-ocean interaction during each condition.
Precipitation over Indochina during the monsoon transition: modulation by Indian Ocean and ENSO regimes

Abstract:The interannual variability of precipitation during the summer monsoon transition over the Indochina Peninsula (ICP) is substantially influenced by the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) of the tropical ocean, showing a robust relationship between April and May (AM) precipitation and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Dynamic composites and statistical analyses supported by model experiments indicate that the observed anomalous AM precipitation is associated with circulation anomalies over the Pacific and, in addition, affected by the response to the tropical SSTAs forcing from the Indian Ocean (IO): (i) Less (greater) than normal AM precipitation over the ICP occurs during the El Niño (La Niña) years, which is consistent with late (early) Bay of Bengal (BoB) summer monsoon onset. (ii) The dry (wet) AM precipitation years are associated with the anomalous western North Pacific (WNP) anti-cyclone (cyclone) induced by El Niño (La Niña) concurrent with the anti-cyclone (cyclone) over the BoB, suppressing (favoring) the meridional flow of warm and moist air from the Pacific and Indian ocean and thus cutting (providing) moisture supply for the ICP. (iii) The reduced tropical convective activity over Maritime Continent (MC) is related to the weakened local Hadley circulation concurrent with the weakened overturning Walker circulation, and favors a drier than normal AM precipitation over the ICP, to which the wetter years are opposite. These symmetric atmospheric circulation patterns characterizing dry and wet AM precipitation over the ICP are also reproduced by numerical experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model.

Abstract:Northern Thailand rainfall (NTR) plays a crucial role in supplying surface water resources for downstream regions that millions of Thais rely on. The NTR has been reported to be adversely affected by the recent climate change making it impossible to accurately predict rainfall for better water management. In this work, we attempt to find an indicator that can be used to predict monthly NTR using an oceanic index based on sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) called the South China Sea Index (SCSI). First, we investigate the lead-lag relationships between NTR and several well-known indices. Relationships of NTR-Niño1+2 and NTR-Niño3 appear to be relatively strong. We then perform empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis on SSHA in the South China Sea and observe that the 2nd principal component (PC) time series and NTR strongly correlate. However, direct use of PC time series is computationally costly. Instead, we use SSHA information relating to the second EOF mode to create SCSI without performing EOF analysis. The correlation of SCSI-NTR is negatively strong. Lastly, we forecast NTR using SARIMAX models with Niño1+2, Niño3, and SCSI as inputs. The best model was SARIMAX (1, 0, 1)(0, 0, 2)12 using SCSI and Nino3 as inputs with AIC = 2368.705, RMSE = 51.167 mm per month and R2 = 0.732. Result raises capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in the area.

Abstract:Soil erosion is a serious ecological problem in the fragile ecological environment of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Rainfall erosivity is one of the most important factors controlling soil erosion and is associated with the El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO). However, there is a lack of studies related to the spatial distribution and temporal trends of rainfall erosivity on the TP as a whole. Additionally, the understanding of the general influence of ENSO on rainfall erosivity across the TP remains to be developed. In this study, long-term (1971-2020) daily precipitation data from 91 meteorological stations were selected to calculate rainfall erosivity. The analysis combines co-kriging interpolation, Sen's slope estimator, and the Mann-Kendall trend test to investigate the spatiotemporal patten of rainfall erosivity across the TP. The Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) and multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) were chosen as ENSO phenomenon characterization indices, and the relationship between ENSO and rainfall erosivity was explored by employing a continuous wavelet transform. The results showed that an increasing trend in annual rainfall erosivity was detected on the TP from 1971 to 2020. The seasonal and monthly rainfall erosivity was highly uneven, with the summer erosivity accounting for 60.36%. The heterogeneous spatial distribution of rainfall erosivity was observed with an increasing trend from southeast to northwest. At the regional level, rainfall erosivity in the southeastern TP was mainly featured by a slow increase, while in the northwest was more destabilizing and mostly showed no significant trend. The rainfall erosivity on the whole TP was relatively high during non-ENSO periods and relatively low during El Niño/La Niña periods. It is worth noting that rainfall erosivity in the northwest TP appears to be more serious during the La Niña event. Furthermore, there were obvious resonance cycles between the rainfall erosivity and ENSO in different regions of the plateau, but the cycles had pronounced discrepancies in the occurrence time, direction of action and intensity. These findings contribute to providing references for soil erosion control on the TP and the formulation of future soil conservation strategies.
Contribution of precipitation events with different consecutive days to rainfall change over Asia during ENSO years

Abstract:The present study investigates the contributions of four types of precipitation events with different consecutive days (1–3-day, 4–7-day, 8–14-day, and over-14 day) of precipitation to April–October rainfall anomalies over Asia and roles of the three factors (intensity, number, duration) in area-mean rainfall anomalies of four types of precipitation events in El Niño and La Niña years. It is found that precipitation tends to be below normal in the entire tropical and extratropical regions except for northeastern Asia and east and west Indochina Peninsula during El Niño years. During La Niña years, precipitation tends to increase in eastern China, India, the south hills of the Himalayas, west Indochina Peninsula-southwest China, and the Maritime Continent, but decreases in northeast China, east Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and east Indochina Peninsula. The precipitation change at the low latitudinal regions has a larger contribution from the over-14-day events. The number of events is a main factor in changes of precipitation of primary events during El Niño years. The precipitation changes in El Niño and La Niña years are consistent with changes in the activity of cyclonic wind anomalies corresponding to the precipitation events. The intraseasonal wind anomalies leading to the precipitation events in China are preceded by northwestward move of cyclonic systems from the tropical western North Pacific that promotes the start of precipitation in the concerned regions. The present study points to the impacts of intraseasonal wind systems with various lifespans on precipitation changes over Asia in El Niño and La Niña years.

Impact of ENSO Events on Droughts in China

Abstract:The El Niño Southe58rn Oscillation (ENSO) is a typical oscillation affecting climate change, and its stable periodicity, long-lasting effect, and predictable characteristics have become important indicators for regional climate prediction. In this study, we analyze the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the Niño3.4 index, the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), and the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI). Additionally, we explore the spatial and temporal distribution of the correlation coefficients between ENSO and SPEI and the time lag between ENSO events of varying intensities and droughts. The results reveal that the use of Nino3.4, MEI, and SOI produces differences in the occurrence time, end time, and intensity of ENSO events. Nino3.4 and MEI produce similar results for identifying ENSO events, and the Nino3.4 index accurately identifies and describes ENSO events with higher reliability. In China, the drought-sensitive areas vulnerable to ENSO events include southern China, the Jiangnan region, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the arid and semi-arid areas of northwestern China. Droughts in these areas correlate significantly with meteorological drought, and time-series correlations between ENSO events and droughts are significantly stronger in regions close to the ocean. Drought occurrence lags ENSO events: when using the Niño3.4 index to identify ENSO, droughts lag the strongest and weakest El Niño events by 0–12 months. However, when using the MEI as a criterion for ENSO, droughts lag the strongest and weakest El Niño events by 0–7 months. The time lag between the strongest ENSO event and drought is shorter than that for the weakest ENSO event, and droughts have a wider impact. The results of this study can provide a climate-change-compatible basis for drought monitoring and prediction.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to assess the effects of El Niño and the Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the temperature in southern Vietnam (TSV) and to establish a new ENSO index for the study area (named southern Vietnam Enso Index, VEI). Data used in this study included TSV, sea surface temperature (SST) in Niño regions, sea level pressure (SLP) at Tahiti and Darwin, and ENSO indices. The results showed that, among all ENSO indices, the oceanic Niño Index (ONI) and Japan Meteorological Agency ENSO index (JEI) gave a better correlation with TSV, but their correlation coefficients (R) were relatively low. That may suggest that these indices could be used with low efficiency for climate monitoring and prediction. The VEI was built based on the pair of SST in Niño 3.4 and Niño.West, which gained a higher correlation coefficient with the temperature in southern Vietnam in comparison with other ENSO indices. The lag time between VEI and TSV was about 5 months, which was one month longer than the one between ONI and TSV. Moreover, analyzing the temperature difference between the warm and cold phases also indicated that using VEI led to a higher contrast than using ONI. In brief, the newly established VEI could be more suitable for the study area.

Abstract:Knowledge about the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the scientific foundation for short-term climate prediction, due to its global influence. In operation and research communities, the ENSO state is often represented by various ENSO indices. However, it is unclear which index is the strongest for capturing ENSO's global climate influence. By examining the correlations of eleven ENSO indices with monthly mean global precipitation and surface temperature (TS), we illustrate the similarities and differences in the connections, identify the strongest index, and discuss the physics behind the differences. For the global average, the Niño3.4 and relative Niño3.4 indices are the two strongest indices and the warm pool index is the weakest one for capturing the impact of ENSO on global precipitation, while the Niño4 and Niño3.4 indices are the two strongest indices and the Modoki index is the weakest one for capturing the ENSO's influence on TS variations. In addition to the dependence on the variables and ENSO indices, the representations of climate variability associated with ENSO depend on the region. For example, in Australia, the southern oscillation index has the most significant correlations with precipitation and its correlations with TS are relatively weaker than those of some of the other indices. These differences associated with the various ENSO indices may be due to their representation of the deep convection in the tropical Pacific. These results can serve as a benchmark to understand the global picture of monthly mean precipitation and TS influenced by ENSO and to verify model's ability in capturing these connections.
