Abstract:The lower Meghna River, the easternmost part of the Ganges Delta, faces severe anthropogenic perturbations as it receives a huge discharge and industrial effluents. To measure the metal concentrations and human health hazards, edible tissues of 15 commercially important fish species were collected from the local fish markets and the lower Meghna River, Bangladesh. Trace and heavy metals such as Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Hg, Ni, Ca, Co, Se, Rb, Sr, and As were detected using the Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) method. The hierarchy of mean metal concentrations obtained was: Fe (162.198 mg/kg) > Zn (113.326 mg/kg) > Ca (87.828 mg/kg) > Sr (75.139 mg/kg) > Cu (36.438 mg/kg) > Se (9.087 mg/kg) > Cr (7.336 mg/kg) > Mn (6.637 mg/kg) > Co (3.474 mg/kg) > Rb (1.912 mg/kg) > Hg (1.657 mg/kg) > Ni (1.467 mg/kg) > Pb (0.521 mg/kg) > As (BDL). Based on the metal concentration obtained, the carnivorous species contained more metals than omnivores and herbivores. Similarly, the euryhaline and benthic feeder fishes had more metals than the stenohalines and demersal fishes. The metal pollution index (MPI) suggested that the highly consumed fish species Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and Rui (Labeo rohita) accumulated higher metals than other fishes. Both the Targeted Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Hazard Index (HI) values for adult and child consumers were <1, indicating that consumers would not experience the non-carcinogenic health effects. Although children were more susceptible than adults, carcinogenic risk (CR) exposure of Cr for all the consumers was found in the acceptable range (10−6 to 10−4), but the CR exposure of Pb was negligible for all the consumers. The correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis were conducted to identify the sources of metals identified from the fish tissue. The results indicated that the probable sources of the pollutants were anthropogenic, arising from agricultural activities, electroplating materials, and lubricants used near the study area. However, the present study showed a different metal concentration in the samples at different levels but within the threshold levels non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks; hence, the fishes of the area, in general, are safe for human consumption.

Abstract:Shrimp and Crab, important sources of protein, are currently being adversely affected by the rising industrialization, which has led to higher levels of heavy metals. The goal of this study was to evaluate the health risks of contamination associated with nine heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Ni, As, Al, and Fe) in two species of shrimp ( Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Metapenaeus monoceros ) and one species of crab ( Scylla serrata ) that were collected from the Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat areas of Bangladesh. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used for the study. The results showed that all metal concentrations in shrimp and crab samples were below the recommended level, indicating that ingestion of these foods would not pose any substantial health risks to individuals. To evaluate the non-carcinogenic health risks, the target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were determined, and the target cancer risk (TR) was utilized to evaluate the carcinogenic health risks. From the health point of view, this study showed that crustaceans obtained from the study sites were non – toxic (THQ and HI < 1), and long-term, continuous intake is unlikely to pose any significant health hazards (TR = 10 −7 -10 −5 ) from either carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic effects.

[Distribution of Pb and Zn in transgenic metallothionein tobacco].

Abstract:Transgenic metallothionein (MT) plant can clear the heavy metals from soil and environment, but the distribution of metals in plants has not been studied systematically. The Pb and Zn contents in different parts of transgenic MT tobacco plant of sixth generation and traditional plant (same culture variety as control) were analyzed. The Pb and Zn contents in total transgenic plant were 21.8% and 27.2% higher than control, respectively. The distribution of Pb and Zn in different organs varied in these two types of plants. The Pb and Zn contents in old leaves, stem and root in transgenic plants were significantly higher than those in wild type tobacco, while there was no significant difference in young leaves. The Pb contents in old leaves and root were 30.2% and 47.8% higher than those in the control, and the Zn contents in old leaves, stem and root were 4.7%, 29.2% and 21.6% higher than those in the control. These data showed that Pb was accumulated in old leaves and root easily, while Zn was accumulated in old leaves and stem easily.

Abstract:A radiological assessment of inland freshwater fishes of wetland haor zones, near a uranium mine and Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) areas, was performed. Gamma spectrometric analysis showed the accumulation of 226 Ra, 228 Ra, and 40 K in all studied fishes, with varying degree levels of concentrations. The average radioactivity levels of 226 Ra, 228 Ra and 40 K in haor fish samples ranged from 2.76 ± 1.51 to 22.02 ± 3.81 Bq kg −1 , 1.78 ± 0.69 to 21.53 ± 1.40 Bq kg −1 and 405.51 ± 22.04 to 749.80 ± 42.65 Bq kg −1 , respectively. Conversely, the respective values for Bata fish samples of Rooppur Nuclear power plant sites varied from 2.66 ± 0.80 to 6.62 ± 0.81 Bq kg −1 , 2.31 ± 0.62 to 5.18 ± 49.81 Bq kg −1 and 342.00 ± 4.98 to 461.45 ± 18.00 Bq kg −1 , respectively. Activity levels of Taki fish ( Channa punctatus ) from haors zones were almost 3–4 times higher than the Meni fish ( Nundus nundus ) of the same locations and Bata fish ( Labeo bata ) of the RNPP site. The general public may attain doses of 244.54 μSv from the consumption of haor fish and 84.02 μSv from the fish of the RNPP sites yearly. The chance of an increase in cancer risk from intake of haor fish was higher than the ICRP values of 2.9 × 10 −4 . Univariate statistics showed that 226 Ra and 228 Ra radionuclides do not normally distribute, whereas 40 K is normally distributed in the studied fish species. Multivariate statistical analysis demonstrated that the radioactivity and estimated radiological parameters are strongly positively correlated with 226 Ra and 228 Ra, and also positively correlated with 40 K. Hence, it indicated that the contents in the freshwater fish species are usually controlled and influenced by similar geogenic sources and occur together. It is presumed that the radiological risk is mostly associated with and dominated by the uranium and thorium series and non-series 40 K radionuclides in the freshwater fish species.

Abstract:Trace-element or heavy-metal pollution has emerged as a serious concern in terms of both environmental and human health issues. This study measured six trace and toxic heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn) in four marine fish and shrimp species to assess their accumulation levels and evaluate the risks to human health. The mean concentrations of the metals in fish and shrimp species (Labeo bata, Sillaginopsis panijus, Platycepalus fuscus, and Penaeus monodon) followed the decreasing order of Zn (40.8 ± 9.7 μg/g) > Cu (17.8 ± 7.1 μg/g) > Pb (6.2 ± 1.8 μg/g) > Ni (0.4 ± 0.3 μg/g) > Cd (0.06 ± 0.02 μg/g > Cr (below detection level). Among the metals, only Pb in finfish and Pb, Cu, and Zn in shrimp samples exceeded the national recommended limits, representing possible risks to consumers. The mean metal concentrations in the studied fish/shrimp species followed the descending order of P. monodon > S. panijus > P. fuscus > L. bata, which implies that bottom dwellers and omnivores had higher levels of metals. However, the estimated daily intake (EDI) concentrations of Zn and Cu for the studied species were lower than the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). In addition, the Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI or TTHQ) values for all species were < 1, indicating that consumers might not experience carcinogenic health risks. A strong significant (p < 0.05) correlation between Cu and Pb (r = 0.623) and Zn and Cu (r = −0.871) indicated they were from the same source of origin. Cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated possible anthropogenic sources of toxic metals in the study area, specifically industrial wastes and agricultural chemicals.

Abstract:Two patients who had angiographically proven coronary artery aneurysms are presented. The clinical pictures of these patients were similar to that of patients with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Both had severe angina pectoris, and the second patient (case 2) had had myocardial infarction. Their coronary artery aneurysms were single, fusiform (case 1) and saccular (case 2) in shape and not associated with extensive coronary atherosclerosis. They were treated medically and did well.

Abstract:Despite sporadic and irregular studies on heavy metal(loid)s health risks in water, fish, and soil in the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal, no chemometric approaches have been applied to assess the human health risks comprehensively. This review aims to employ chemometric analysis to evaluate the long-term spatiotemporal health risks of metal(loid)s e.g., Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, As, Cr, Pb, Cu, and Ni in coastal water, fish, and soils from 2003 to 2023. Across coastal parts, studies on metal(loid)s were distributed with 40% in the southeast, 28% in the south-central, and 32% in the southwest regions. The southeastern area exhibited the highest contamination levels, primarily due to elevated Zn content (156.8 to 147.2 mg/L for Mn in water, 15.3 to 13.2 mg/kg for Cu in fish, and 50.6 to 46.4 mg/kg for Ni in soil), except for a few sites in the south-central region. Health risks associated with the ingestion of Fe, As, and Cd (water), Ni, Cr, and Pb (fish), and Cd, Cr, and Pb (soil) were identified, with non-carcinogenic risks existing exclusively through this route. Moreover, As, Cr, and Ni pose cancer risks for adults and children via ingestion in the southeastern region. Overall non-carcinogenic risks emphasized a significantly higher risk for children compared to adults, with six, two-, and six-times higher health risks through ingestion of water, fish, and soils along the southeastern coast. The study offers innovative sustainable management strategies and remediation policies aimed at reducing metal(loid)s contamination in various environmental media along coastal Bangladesh.

Abstract:This study investigates the bioaccumulation of heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr) in water and mollusks across the Karnafully River estuaryof Bangladesh. Samples were collected from six different sites encompassing diverse ecological conditions over three seasons: monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter. Six mollusk species were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry to quantify metal concentrations in both tissues and shells. These species are Neritina violocea, Neritina sulculosa, Telescopium telescopium, Cerithida ecingulata, Corbicula fluminea, and Bellamya bengalesis . The Chaktai canal site had the highest concentration of Cu (13.99±0.92 mg/kg) from the mussel species B. Bengalesis during monsoon season, which was higher than the tolerable limit for human. The the lowest concentration of Cu (1.13±0.76 mg/kg) from the composite mussel species N. sulculosa were fround from the 15 No. Jetty site in winter. The highest concentration of Cr was found at the Marine Academy site (0.54±0.24 mg/kg) during the post-monsoon period from the mussel species N. violocea , while the lowest concentration was found near the Karnafully Bridge (0.05±0.02 mg/kg) during the monsoon from the mussel species Cerithidea cingulata . The highest concentration of Cd was observed in the Chaktai canal site (0.77±0.04 mg/kg) during the winter from the B. bengalesis, and the lowest concentration was recorded in the Karnafully Bridge (0.33±0.06 mg/kg) site during the winter season from the Cerithidae cingulata species. The highest amount of Pb was found in Chaktai canal site (0.32±0.06 mg/kg) during the monsoon season in B . bengalesis fuana. The lowest amount was found in Karnafully Bridge (0.09±0.02 mg/kg) in the Cerithidae cingulate species at the same time. The results suggested that the possibility of the occurrence of acute toxicities of Cu, Cr, Cd and Pb was unlikely except for the mussel of T. telescopium in the Marine Academy that indicates heavy metals presence at the Marine Academy site. The study revealed that the average concentrations of the heavy metals were in the order of Cu>Cd>Cr>Pb in the monsoon, postmonsoon, and winter seasons. The principal Component Analysis (PCA) highlighted distinct seasonal patterns in metal accumulation, underscoring the need for seasonal-specific monitoring and management strategies in estuarine ecosystems.

Abstract:Current state of contamination and subsequent risk of contaminated sediment of a tidal river of Bangladesh was evaluated in the present study. Sediment samples were collected from five locations in the tributary of Bakkhali River estuary during summer (April) and winter (December) season, 2020. Collected samples were processed using standard protocol and the content of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) and metalloid (As), were analyzed by the Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Sediment contamination was evaluated by pollution load index (PLI), contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (Cd), potential ecological risk index (PERI), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk (CR) due to the dermal contact of the sediment. Multivariate statistical analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were also applied to find out the possible sources of the contaminant in the sediment. Results showed the average concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu and Zn was 9.74 ± 3.57, 2.00 ± 0.85, 48.75 ± 8.92, 29.78 ± 8.39, 5.44 ± 2.03 and 56.94 ± 8.57 mg/kg, respectively. Concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn were within the recommended level whereas the concentration of As, Cd and Cr were suppressed the recommended level of WHO and FAO/WHO standards. PLI, CF and Cd revealed considerably low degree of contamination of the sediment. Geo-accumulation index indicated uncontaminated to moderately contaminated condition of the sediment. Although the values of enrichment factor revealed no potential enrichment for most of the metals, Cd showed a minor enrichment during the winter season. Based on the ecological risk assessment, the sediment from all of the sample locations was found to be of moderate to low risk. PCA and CA analysis revealed the origin of contaminants mainly from anthropogenic sources. Although different metals showed non-carcinogenic risk to the inhabitants, cancer risk values for dermal contact (CRderm) were much lower than 10-6 indicating no cancer risk for adult and child. However, the findings also revealed that children were more susceptible to CRderm compared to adults. The present study concluded that long term dermal contact of the sediment of Bakkhali River estuary will be contagious to the people. Therefore, regular monitoring of the estuarine environment is necessary so that contamination does not get worse.
Pollution status and ecological risks of metals in surface water of a coastal estuary and health risk assessment for recreational users

Abstract:Since the areas close to the Sundarbans mangrove estuary, which is one of the most dynamic and productive ecosystems in the world, are very suitable for urban and industrial activities, the coastal areas of this ecosystem are constantly exposed to metal contamination. In this study, we analyzed the levels, spatial distributions, sources, pollution status, ecological risks, and health risks for recreational users of 16 metals in surface water collected from 18 sampling sites in the Sundarbans estuary. Considering the mean values of metals, Sr (2523 μg/L), Al (1731 μg/L), B (1692 μg/L) and Fe (1321 μg/L) were the most abundant metals in the coastal waters of the estuary, while Cd (0.977 μg/L), Ni (3.11 μg/L), Cu (5.98 μg/L) and Cr (9.77 μg/L) were the less abundant metals. All metals except Zr had the coefficient of variation (CV) values of over 35%, suggesting that other metals showed strong variation between sampling sites due to anthropogenic activities. Al, Fe and Pb levels of all sampling sites were above the limit values set for coastal and marine waters. Similarly, Pb levels of all sites exceeded the USEPA chronic criterion set for saltwater aquatic life. The results of pollution indices indicated that there was a serious metal pollution in almost all sampling sites. Low ecological risk (ER) at four sites, moderate ER at five sites and considerable ER at nine sites were recorded. Dual hierarchical clustering analysis grouped 16 metals into four clusters based on their potential sources and 18 sampling sites into three clusters based on their similar pollution characteristics. Health risk assessment results indicated that total hazard index (THI) values of all sites for recreational children were above the acceptable level of 1, indicating that water of all sites is not safe for health of children. However, THI values of all sites except ST8 (1.1) and ST11 (1.19) for recreational adults were below 1. Among the metals studied, Zr was found to be metal that contributes the most (75.89%) to total health risk in this coastal estuary. This finding reveals the necessity of monitoring of such less-studied metals such as Zr in the surface water of coastal estuaries. Carcinogenic risk values of As were within or below the acceptable range at all sites, indicating that carcinogenic risks would not be expected for recreational users.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination of fish is a serious public health concern worldwide, including in Bangladesh. In this study, six commonly consumed fish species namely Hilsha (Tenualosa ilisha), Kachki (Corica soborna), Punti (Puntitus ticto), Taki (Channa punctatus), Meni (Nandus nandus), and Tengra (Mystus tengara) were analyzed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni), by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The fish samples were collected from wholesale markets in Dhaka city, the main business hub of Bangladesh where the fishes converged from countrywide and are redistributed to the whole city. The metal concentration varied among the studied fish species. Hilsha, the national fish of Bangladesh, contained the highest As among the other fishes of this study, whereas Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Ni were the highest in Kachki, and Pb and Cr were the highest in Tengra. The probable source of metal accumulation in the fish species may be the river or marine water that can be contaminated by industrial waste, pesticide, and/or fertilizer use in agriculture and/or commercial fish feeds. All analyzed fish species showed serious heavy metal pollution, having high average pollution load index (APLI) values (> 1). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values for the metals were lower than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The hazard index (HI) for all the fish species was above 1 for adults, showing non-carcinogenic health risks. The target carcinogenic risk (TCR) values were below the acceptable limit (10−4) for most of the metals, indicating safe for consumption with respect to the risk of cancer.

Abstract:Pollution and food safety are concerning issues in recent years. For that, the present investigation was aimed to determine the levels of heavy metals (Lead, Cadmium and Nickel) in different organs of three fish (Labeo rohita, Gibelion catla and Pangasius hypophthalmus) and to compare the present value with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/World Health Oraganization (WHO) acceptable limit. These commonly consumed fish were collected from Kawran Bazar fish market, Bangladesh and the concentrations of heavy metals were carried out using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The highest (48.33 ± 2.52 ppm) concentration of Lead (Pb) was found in the gill of Pangus fish and the lowest (23.33 ± 2.52 ppm) was found in the gonad of Rui fish. In case of Cadmium (Cd), the highest (0.96 ± 0.08 ppm) concentration was found in the gill of Rui fish whereas the lowest (0.02 ± 0.01 ppm) was found in the kidney of Pangus fish. The highest (6.63 ± 1.00 ppm) concentration of Nickel (Ni) was found in the gill of Katla fish and the lowest (0.10 ± 0.10 ppm) was found in the liver of the same species. The metal concentrations in the muscle of Rui, Katla and Pangus fish were in the decreasing order of Pb>Ni>Cd, Pb>Cd>Ni and Pb>Ni>Cd respectively. In the study, it was found that Pb has exceeded the limits in every case whereas Cd was within the limits except for a few and Ni was completely within the maximum allowable limits provided by FAO/ WHO. However, all these concentrated metals in different parts of fish body could be concentrated into human body, if they are consumed and if so happen; there will be a massive health risk for us.

Abstract:Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as Hg, As, and Pb have become concentrated in the aquatic ecosystem as a result of increased human activities. However, these substances frequently have synergistic or antagonistic effects on the human body or other animals. As a result, there are concerns world-wide that commercially available food products, especially fish, may be contaminated with hazardous elements. In this study, samples of four selected fishes, Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea), Baim (Macrognathus pancalus), Baila (Glossogobius giuris), Meni (Nandus nandus) were analyzed from one of the largest freshwater wetlands (designed as a Ramsar Site) in South Asia to evaluate PTEs contamination status and human health risk assessment. The result demonstrated that the degree of contamination for six PTEs decreased in the following sequences for fish: Fe > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Hg. The edible part of G. giuris had the maximum value for Hg (0.42 μg/g dw), while N. nandus predominantly accumulated As ( Hg > Cu > Zn > Pb. The values for each index were less than 1, indicating that there were no substantial health risks for the consumers. The carcinogenic risks (CR) derived from the intake of Pb ranged from 4.92 × 10−8 to 4.14 × 10−8 for males and 5.45 × 10−8 to 4.59 × 10−8 for females, which also did not exceed the standard limit (1.00 × 10−6). This study demonstrated that, under the existing consumption rate, there was no potential health harm to consumers from consuming the studied fishes. This study offers a chance to regularly check PTEs in this environment, reducing the contamination of heavy metals.

Abstract:Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether there are any significant toxic effects of the widely exposed metals on different organs (gill, liver, kidney, and muscle) of some commercially important marine fish species (Herpodon nehereus, Pampus chinensis and Hilsa ilisha). Study Design: The collection of the samples was done from January to March 2018 from Bay of Bengal near Chattogram city of Bangladesh. The study is based on randomly collected samples from the intended sampling sites (Randomized Block Design) to ensure the evenness and unbiases of the collected samples. Methodology: Analyses were performed for metals such as arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). During each month, five individuals each with three replications from the three targeted species were collected, with a total of 135 (45*3) fishes in the study period. Results: The concentrations of the metals found in the fishes varied in the following ranges: As: 0.029-0.071 ppm, Pb: 0.008-0.083 ppm and Cr: 0.0001-0.03 ppm. The obtained result revealed the highest concentrations of all three metals were recorded in H.nehereus fish. The organ wise lead concentration was recorded highest in kidneys and gills of examined fishes with significant variation in muscles and liver. The scenario depicted quite differently in case of chromium where concentration in gills was found to be the highest with insignificant variation in accumulation in other three organs. In case of Arsenic, kidneys and livers were the most exposed two organs in comparison to significant exposure to muscles and gills. The obtained values of arsenic accumulation were considered critical for human consumption as it was higher than the recommended values stated by WHO and FAO; but the concentration of lead and chromium were found to be safe for human consumption. The values recorded for lead were increasingly approached to the safety values. Conclusion: So, crucial steps should be taken regarding safety and environmentally friendly discharge of arsenic and lead; high levels of pollution will not only affect aquatic life but will also invite socio-economic disasters.
Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Cultured Shrimp and Aquaculture Sludge

Abstract:Shrimp is one of the major export products in South Asian countries and also an eminent source of nutrition for humans. Hence, any negative effect of this industry may affect not only the country’s economy but also human health. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess heavy metal contamination and associated human health risks in cultured shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and aquaculture sludge collected from three shrimp farms of the Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh. The results showed that among the eight metals studied, Pb (17.75 ± 1.5 mg/kg) and Cu (9.43 ± 2.8 mg/kg) levels in all shrimp samples were higher than the recommended limit, whereas the concentrations of Cd (0.09 ± 0.03 mg/kg), Mn (4.83 ± 2.2 mg/kg), As (0.04 ± 0.02 mg/kg), Hg (0.02 ± 0.006 mg/kg), Zn (18.89 ± 2.9 mg/kg) and Cr (0.69 ± 0.6 mg/kg) were within the permissible level. The concentrations of Mn (1043.37 ± 59.8 mg/kg), Cr (30.38 ± 2.1 mg/kg), Zn (74.72 ± 1.13 mg/kg) and Cu (31.14 ± 1.4 mg/kg) in the sludge of all farms were higher than the recommended limit, whereas the concentrations of Pb (20.23 ± 1.9 mg/kg), Cd (0.09 ± 0.2 mg/kg), As (0.44 ± 0.34 mg/kg) and Hg (0.08 ± 0.02 mg/kg) in all sludge samples were lower than the threshold limits. However, the estimated daily intake (EDI), targeted hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) assessed for potential human health risk implications suggested that Pb and Cr may pose non-carcinogenic health effects, although carcinogenic risks (CR) values were acceptable for consumers. However, the pollution load index (PLI) of the studied area was below 1, which indicates low deterioration of the area. Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and contamination factor (CF) analyses revealed that study area is unpolluted and sludge is enriched with metals in the following order: Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Cd > Hg > Pb > As.

Abstract:This investigation measured the extent of heavy metal concentrations (Cr, Pb, Fe, Zn and Ni) in nine finfish and shellfish species from a tropical estuary to determine the degree of pollution and evaluate the human health risk from the exposure to heavy metals through consumption of fish. The hierarchy of mean concentrations (mg/kg) of the heavy metals were: Zn (398.47) > Fe (83.015) > Cr (0.906) > Ni (0.233) > Pb (0.128). The metal concentrations in the edible tissues were ranked in the following sequence: A. bato > C. cirrhosus > A. grammepomus > M. dobsoni > P. paradiseus > O. pama > M. rosenbergii > N. smithi > S. phasa. The results demonstrated that the concentration of Cr and Zn was considerably higher than the guideline values of FAO. Estimated daily intake (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) values were within the acceptable threshold for both adults and children. However, the EDIs of local consumers in the research area for both adults and children were lower than the recommended daily amount (RDA), following the order of Zn > Fe > Cr > Ni > Pb. The HQs of the elements followed the order of Zn > Cr > Fe > Pb > Ni. The investigated HI was not exceeding the recommended limit.

Abstract:Abstract Heavy-metal pollution of surface water, sediment and fish have been seen as a major global problem, with a significant proportion of developing countries like Bangladesh. This study assessed the intensity of alarming six toxic substances (Cr, Zn, Fe, Cu, Pb and Ni) throughout the River water, sediments as well as soft tissues of three widely consumed fishes ( Heteropneustes fossilis, Channa punctatus and Channa striata ) obtained from two urban streams of the Buriganga and Turag in the Dhaka metropolitan. For evaluating the comparative seasonal variation of heavy-metal concentration, water and sediment samples were collected from five selected sites for two different seasons (viz. 10 from winter seasons and 10 from summer seasons). Finally, a total of 20 water samples, 20 sediment and 12 fish samples were investigated by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer (GFAAS) corrected with the Zeeman effect background correction system. The hierarchy of mean concentration of selected heavy metals in Buriganga water is found to be Fe > Cr > Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb in the winter season whereas during the summer season the order is Fe > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb. For the River Turag, the order is Fe > Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb and Fe > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cr > Pb during winter and summer season, respectively. The level of metals studied surpassed the acceptable level of drinkable water, implying the ineptitude of drinking and cooking water from these Rivers. However, this hierarchy of heavy metals for sediments of Buriganga River changed to Fe > Cr > Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb for the winter season and Fe > Cr > Ni > Cu > Zn > Pb for the summer season. Whereas, for the Turag River, the decreasing trend of metal concentration found in sediment was Fe > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb for both seasons. For probable human health hazard implications, contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) were studied. The CF values revealed the low-to-moderate pollution of sediment. The PLI value above one shows the degradation of the consistency of the sediments. Fe, Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn and Cu concentrations in fish species were found to be 19.66–45.1, 0.07–12.18, 1.2–10.18, 20.18–187.07, 11.08–68.25, 2.07–10.4 mg/kg, respectively. The metals studied differed considerably among organisms and seasons. Bioconcentration factor (BCF), the daily average consumption of metal (EDI), as well as target threat quotients (THQs) for specific metal indicated that Cr and Pb are harmful in fish muscles and possible risks remain for fish consumers. The obtained concentrations of some metals are higher than the WHO/FAO’s permissible limit, suggesting that the water and fish found in these Rivers are like to be harmful to the human being. This study shows that attention should be given to the risk assessment for heavy metals in these Rivers.

Abstract:This research examines the contamination levels in the Pashur River in Bangladesh stemming from trace metal discharge originating from the Mongla seaport and various industrial outlets. It delves into both ecological risks and potential health hazards for humans consuming fish carrying accumulated trace metals. The research employed atomic absorption spectrometry to measure the concentrations of chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in surface water, sediment, and fish samples. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risks were calculated to determine the human health risk caused by the consumption of these targeted fish species. An R I value of 42.89 indicates that the collective presence of trace metals in sediment poses significant ecological risks to the study area. Although the majority of trace metals present in sediment are categorized under class 1 (ranging from unpolluted to moderately polluted) based on the I geo values, Cd is classified under class 2, signifying a moderate level of pollution. Significantly, THQ values surpass the threshold of 1 for Cr and As, indicating potential health risks associated with the consumption of specific fish species. Among the trace metals analyzed, Ni demonstrates the highest cancer risk (CR) value, at 5.78 × 10 3 , indicating a notable cancer risk associated with the consumption of targeted fish. Recommendations include the strict enforcement of waste disposal policies to mitigate anthropogenic discharge and safeguard the river from further pollution.

Abstract:This study investigated the magnitude of heavy metal contamination and determined the carcinogenic as well as non-carcinogenic risks associated with selected food consumption in Bangladesh. Commonly consumed varieties of rice, vegetables, and fish samples were analyzed to measure the concentrations of heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, lead, arsenic, manganese, nickel, and zinc. These staple food items showed the greatest probabilities of heavy metal contamination in different phases of their production and marketing. Wide variations of metal concentrations were observed. Specifically, estimated daily intakes of arsenic and cadmium exceeded allowable daily intakes in all three food items. Toxicity scores of the metals were evaluated, and a comprehensive risk assessment was conducted to quantify the risks associated with the daily food consumption. Except for cadmium and lead in vegetables, all the contaminants present in each food item posed significant levels of carcinogenic risks up to 2.99 × 10−3 compared to the EPA recommended carcinogenic risk level of 1.0 × 10−6. Cadmium and arsenic intake due to rice consumption also posed unsafe levels of non-carcinogenic risks of 4.587 and 6.648, respectively, compared to the EPA recommended non-carcinogenic risk level of 1.0. Finally, a revised set of permissible limits was proposed for the heavy metals detected in the food items. Those permissible limits would ensure the risks associated with food consumption below the allowable carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk levels. Thus, this comprehensive approach would provide guidelines to formulate adequate control measures and regulatory limits of toxic metals in foods produced and marketed in Bangladesh.

Abstract:Quality fish feed is the prime need for successful aquaculture. Feed qualities determine the fish flesh quality including appearance, color, odor, flavor, texture, nutritive value, and shelf-life. Nowadays, consumers are very much concerned about various issues regarding way of fish farming, types of feed ingredients used etc. The current study was conducted to assess the heavy metal contents and nutritional composition of some selected commercial fish feeds used in Bangladesh. The major heavy metal concentrations and proximate composition (moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, ash, crude fiber, and carbohydrate) of the collected feed samples were analyzed. The results showed that the feeds contained a number of heavy metals in varying proportions. The highest concentrations (mg/kg) of heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) analyzed in fish feed samples were 0.189, 0.027, 1.023, 0.303, and 1.468, respectively. There were significant differences between the nutritive values provided by feed companies and the values observed in this finding. The present study recommends that adequate measures are required to be taken by commercial fish feed manufacturers to ensure the nutritional quality of feed as well as to avoid the contamination of feed from heavy metals. Otherwise, fish and human, the ultimate consumer, may be predisposed to the assimilation and accumulation of the assessed heavy metals.
