Abstract:A set of chitosan/ε-polylysine (ε-PL) bionanocomposite films were prepared by a simple in situ self-assembly technique using sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as cross-linking agent. The physical, mechanical, structural, and antimicrobial properties of these films were investigated. Fourier infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the introduction of TPP promoted the formation of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions among functional groups of chitosan or ε-PL, which improved the tensile strength and decreased the water solubility, water vapor permeability and surface wettability of films. On the other hand, the incorporation of ε-PL weakened the bionanocomposite film' structure and integrity, resulting in a decrease trend of films' mechanical and barrier properties. More importantly, the bionanocomposite films exhibited excellent antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli and S. aureus by the increasing ratio of ε-PL. And ε-PL presented a sustained release from the films, which was closely related to TPP concentration. Results of this study suggested that chitosan/ε-PL films could be used as antimicrobial bio-material and have great potential in food industry.
Preparation of an intelligent film based on chitosan/oxidized chitin nanocrystals incorporating black rice bran anthocyanins for seafood spoilage monitoring.

Abstract:A novel intelligent film was developed by immobilizing 1%, 3% and 5% black rice bran anthocyanins (BACNs) into oxidized-chitin nanocrystals (O-ChNCs)/ chitosan (CS) matrix. The ultraviolet-visible spectrum of BACNs solutions showed color variations from red to greyish green in a range of pH 2.0-12.0. Fourier transform infrared spectrum and atomic force microscope of the films showed that O-ChNC and BACNs were well dispersed into the CS matrix. Although the incorporation of BACNs decreased the mechanical and barrier properties of the CS/O-ChNCs/BACNs (COB) films, it endowed the COB films with excellent UV-barrier, antioxidant and pH sensitivity character. The results of the application trial showed that the COB films containing 3% of BACNs (COB-3) were able to monitor the spoiling of fish and shrimp by visible color changes. Therefore, the developed COB-3 films could be used as an intelligent food packaging for monitoring animal-based protein food spoilage.
Modification of Physicochemical, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Properties of Chitosan Film with Curcumin-Loaded TA/Fe Nanoparticles

Abstract:The aim of this study is to fabricate novel chitosan-based film loaded with curcumin loaded metal-phenolic nanoparticles (MPN@Cur NPs) as an active agent for food preservation. The average particle size and zeta-potential of the MPN@Cur NPs were determined to be 205.9 nm and -26.8 mV, respectively. The impact of incorporating MPN@Cur NPs upon the morphology, microstructure, physicochemical characteristics, and functional activities of CS-based films were investigated through scanning electron microscope, infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer, ultraviolet spectrometer, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity analysis. The outcomes indicated that MPN@Cur NPs exhibited good mechanical compatibility with chitosan, effectively filling voids within the film matrix and significantly enhancing its mechanical characteristics (e.g., elongation at break improved from 22.6% to 37.3%; tensile strength improved from 31.1 MPa to 43.6 MPa). Additionally, films incorporating MPN@Cur NPs displayed superior barrier properties (e.g., water vapor and oxygen transmission), enhanced thermal stability, and improved UV-blocking capabilities compared to pure CS films (transmittance for UV decreased from 93.6% to 35.3%). Moreover, these films exhibited a marked increase in antibacterial efficacy against the foodborne pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as well as elevated antioxidant activity (e.g., scavenging capability for DPPH increased from 9.22% to 85.19%, ABTS increased from 8.62% to 80.02%). Ultimately, the CS-based film significantly prolonged the shelf life of milk stored at 25 degrees C. Therefore, nanocomposite films provide an attractive and promising pathway for the high value-added commercial use of chitosan in food conservation.

Abstract:The function of chitosan film was reinforced by ZnO nanoparticles and antioxidant of bamboo leaves (AOB) for food packaging application. The results of structural characterization indicated the good compatibility among chitosan, ZnO nanoparticles and AOB. The chitosan film had the best mechanical strength and the highest light transmittance. The addition of AOB remarkably reduced the UV light transmittance and significantly enhanced the antioxidant activity of the films. Meanwhile, AOB and ZnO nanoparticles synergistically enhanced the antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Our results suggested that the chitosan/ZnO/AOB films could be applied as potential active packaging materials in food industry to extend the shelf-life of packaged food.
Effect of Oxidized Chitin Nanocrystals and Curcumin into Chitosan Films for Seafood Freshness Monitoring

Abstract:Novel smart films for seafood freshness monitoring were developed by incorporating curcumin (Cur) into a chitosan (CS)/oxidized chitin nanocrystal (O-ChNCs) matrix. O-ChNCs (200-400 nm in length) were prepared from chitin by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxylradical (TEMPO)-oxidation method and used as reinforcement filler for smart films. The effects of O-ChNCs or Cur addition on the structural, mechanical, barrier and optical properties of Cur/CS/O-ChNCs (Cur-CN) films were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of O-ChNCs and Cur could significantly alter the mechanical, barrier and optical properties of the films. The Cur-CN films showed better barrier properties against water vapor and UV-vis light as well as higher mechanical strength than CS film. Among all the films tested, Cur-CN film containing 10 wt % of O-ChNCs (w/w, CS and O-ChNCs basis) presented the best performance. Morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy showed that an appropriate amount of O-ChNCs and Cur was well dispersed in the CS films. The electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds among CS, O-ChNCs and Cur were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Moreover, the colour of Cur-CN films varied with the change in pH, and this characteristic was used to monitor the spoilage of hair tail and shrimp during storage. This study demonstrated that the fabricated smart film has a great potential for use in monitoring seafood freshness.

Abstract:The use of nanotechnology has contributed to conquer the disadvantages of oil-loaded food packaging by altering their properties. In this study, chitosan (CS) composite films were fabricated using a novel nano-encapsulation system: ethanol extract of propolis (EEP)-phosphatidylcholine (PC)-tea seed oil (TSO) nano-microcapsules. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the nano-microcapsules were biocompatible with CS. Uniformly dispersed EEP-PC-TSO nano-microcapsules in CS improved the UV-blocking ability, thermal stability, structural densification, yellowing, and water vapor permeability of the composite films, the release of TSO occurs gradually and under controlled conditions. Compared with a simple mixture film of CS/PC/TSO/EEP, the CS film based on nano-microcapsules containing EEP-PC-TSO was more effective at reducing total bacterial count, thiobarbituric acid reactants (TBARS), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values, extending the shelf life of pork tenderloin. In summary, this CS composite film based on EEP-PC-TSO nano-microcapsules could be applied as a potential preservative film for food packaging.

Abstract:The functional films based on chitosan and corn starch incorporated tea polyphenols were developed through mixing the chitosan and starch solution and the powder of tea polyphenols by the casting method. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of different concentrations of tea polyphenols on the functional properties of the films. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate the potential interactions among chitosan, corn starch and tea polyphenols in the blend films. Physical properties of the blend films, including density, moisture content, opacity, color, water solubility and water swelling, as well as morphological characteristics, were measured. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of tea polyphenols caused the blend films to lead to a darker appearance. The water solubility of the blend film increased with the increase of tea polyphenol concentrations, while moisture content and swelling degree decreased. The hydrogen bonding between chitosan, starch and tea polyphenols restricted the movement of molecular chains and was helpful to the stability of the blend films. The results suggested that these biodegradable blend films could potentially be used as packaging films for the food and drug industries to extend the shelf life to maintain their quality and safety.

Abstract:In this study, chitosan(CS), nano-silicon aerogels(nSA) and tea polyphenols(TP) were used as film-forming materials and processed with ultrasonication to form films using the tape-casting method. The effects of ultrasonication time, temperature and frequency on the properties of CS/nSA/TP film were explored via material property testing. The results of response surface showed that the maximum tensile strength of the film was 4.036 MPa at ultrasonication time(57.97 min), temperature(37.26 °C) and frequency(30 kHz). The maximum elongation at break of the film was 279.42 % at ultrasonication time(60.88 min), temperature(39.93 °C) and frequency(30 kHz). Due to cavitation and super-mixing effects, ultrasonication may make the surface of the film smoother and easier to degrade. After ultrasonication, TPs were protected by the 3D network structure composed of CS and nSA. Ultrasonication improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film. These results show that ultrasonication is an effective method to improve the properties of films.

Abstract:In this study, cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols were added to chitosan/ polyvinyl alcohol/ hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/ alizarin composite films to enhance their mechanical and functional properties. Their addition to the composite films enhanced their antibacterial and antioxidant properties and significantly improved its elongation at break ( p < 0.05). Cinnamon essential oil reduced the water vapor permeability, water content, and water solubility of composite films and improved their transparency. The composite films with additive exhibited excellent UV-barrier ability and pH responsivity. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction analyses confirmed hydrogen bond formation between the polymer molecules and additives. The results of Scanning Electron Microscope-Focused Ion Beam revealed improved surface and cross-section morphology of the films, leading to the generation of a cross-linked structure. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated enhanced thermal stability of the composite films upon cinnamon essential oil addition. Analysis of storage quality indicators (TBARS value, TVC, and TVB-N) revealed that the composite films could prolong the freshness of surimi. The incorporation of cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols into the composite films has demonstrated significant potential as an effective and natural alternative for active food packaging.

Abstract:A biofunctional composite film was prepared using a casting method by incorporation of ε-polylysine (ε-PL) plus astaxanthin (Asta) extracts from Litopenaeus vannamei (L. vannamei) by-products into chitosan and gelatin film forming formulations. Compared with the bare gelatin or the chitosan-gelatin films, the composite film had similar water content and thickness, whereas, decreased water solubility, increased water vapour permeability and water contact angle. Molecular interactions were formed between gelatin and chitosan with or without ε-PL and Asta addition, as recorded and confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The scanning electronic microscopy images showed rough cross-section with pores, as well as vertical cracks along the composite film matrix. Surface roughness decrease was observed for the composite film by atomic force microscopy. The composite film displayed strong inhibitory effect (near 100%) against spoilage bacteria derived from L. vannamei. Besides, the lipid oxidation of corn oil was retarded after addition of composite film, with less than 5 nmol/mL of malondialdehyde detected when incubation at 60 °C for 59 h. Therefore, such composite film could have potential applications for antibacterial and antioxidant food packaging material.

Abstract:Composite films based on chitosan (CS) incorporating Galla chinensis extract (GCNE) at different CS/GCNE weight ratios, which are both biodegradable and multifunctional, were fabricated using the solution-casting method. The FTIR analyses indicated that a good interaction was presented among the GCNE and CS through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The incorporation of the GCNE improved the films' elongation at break, UV-light blocking, and decreased the moisture regain (from 16.68% to 10.69%) and water absorption (from 80.65% to 54.74%). Moreover, the CS/GCNE films exhibited a strong antioxidant activity (from 57.11% to 70.37% of DPPH and from 35.53% to 46.73% of ABTS scavenging activities) mainly due to the high content of phenolic compounds in the incorporated GCNE. The CS/GCNE film-forming solution coatings demonstrated their effectiveness in preserving the quality of postharvest mangoes, specifically by minimizing the change in the firmness, weight loss, titratable acidity, and total phenolic and ascorbic acids. These findings suggest that the multifunctional composite films possess a high application potential to preserve postharvest fruits.

Abstract:Green composite starch films were prepared using tea polyphenols-chitosan-based nanoparticles as active agent and nanocellulose as strength agent, which showed good mechanical and antioxidant activities and is a candidate for food packaging in this work. Here, chitosan-based nanoparticles containing tea polyphenols (CNTP) were prepared by the ionic gel method. The best utilization of tea polyphenols could be achieved when the mass ratio of tea polyphenols to sodium tripolyphosphate was 3:1, the concentration of tea polyphenols was 0.01 g/mL, and the pH of chitosan solution was 4. Uniform and stable CNTP with a particle size of approximately 200 nm was prepared. CNTP release rates were 45.9% after 6 h, showing the ability to release slowly. Using starch as the substrate, nanocellulose as the enhancer, and tea polyphenols as the antioxidant and antibacterial agent, an active film was prepared that demonstrated improved transparency, mechanical properties, and antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Its transmittance reached 83.9%, and the tensile strength was 33.4 MPa. The scavenging efficiency of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) by the composite film was 42%, and the OD value of the composite film was 0.9348. The results showed that CNTP can prolong the release period and activity of tea polyphenols, and the composite film with CNTP had antibacterial and antioxidant activities to prolong the shelf life of food.

Abstract:A chitosan-based nanocomposite film with tannic acid (TA) as a cross-linker and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) as a reinforcing agent was developed with a solution casting technique. TA and TiO2 are biocompatible with chitosan, and this paper studied the synergistic effect of the cross-linker and the reinforcing agent. The addition of TA enhanced the ultraviolet blocking and mechanical properties of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film. The reinforcement of TiO2 in chitosan/TA further improved the nanocomposite film’s mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan or chitosan/TA film. The thermal stability of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film was slightly enhanced, whereas the swelling ratio decreased. Interestingly, its water vapor barrier property was also significantly increased. The developed chitosan-based nanocomposite film showed potent antioxidant activity, and it is promising for active food packaging.

Chitosan/zein-based sustained-release composite films: Fabrication, physicochemical properties and release kinetics of tea polyphenols from polymer matrix

Abstract:This study investigated the properties of chitosan/zein/tea polyphenols (C/Z/T) films and analyzed the release kinetics of tea polyphenols (TP) in various food simulants to enhance the sustainability and functionality of food packaging. The results revealed that TP addition enhanced the hydrophilicity, opacity and mechanical properties of film, and improved the compatibility between film matrix. 1.5 % TP film showed the lowest lightness (76.4) and the highest chroma (29.1), while 2 % TP film had the highest hue angle (1.5). However, the excessive TP (above 1 % concentration) led to a decrease in compatibility and mechanical properties of film. The TP concentration (2 %) resulted in the highest swelling degree in aqueous (750.6 %), alcoholic (451.1 %), and fatty (6.4 %) food simulants. The cumulative release of TP decreased to 16.32 %, 47.13 %, and 5.87 % with the increase of TP load in the aqueous, alcoholic, and fatty food simulants, respectively. The Peleg model best described TP release kinetics. The 2 % TP-loaded film showed the highest DPPH (97.13 %) and ABTS (97.86 %) free radical scavenging activity. The results showed TP release influenced by many factors and obeyed Fick's law of diffusion. This study offered valuable insights and theoretical support for the practical application of active films.
Development, characterization and application of intelligent/active packaging of chitosan/chitin nanofibers films containing eggplant anthocyanins

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop intelligent/active packaging by using chitosan/esterified chitin nanofibers (CN) film matrix and anthocyanins from eggplant peel extract (EE) to monitor the freshness of pork. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and zeta potential results showed that the CN filled into the film network and precisely bonded to the chitosan via electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the incorporation of EE formed hydrogen bonds with chitosan and CN. Thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy showed that the films became more compact and that thermal stability was improved. Hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction and nanofilling effects synergistically improved the mechanical and barrier properties (water vapor, oxygen and optical barrier properties) of the films with the addition of CN. When the content of CN was 5 wt%, the tensile strength, elongation at break, the water vapor and oxygen barrier properties of chitosan film were significantly increased by about 1.44, 1.52, 1.23 and 5.21 times (p < 0.05), respectively. When EE was added to the films, the antibacterial and antioxidant capacities of the film were significantly (p < 0.05) improved. All the films containing eggplant anthocyanins were sensitive to pH 3–11 buffer solutions, and the films had good ammonia-sensitivity and acid-sensitivity. Chitosan-CN-EE films effectively indicated the freshness of pork during storage. Hence, these results suggested that the chitosan-CN-EE films are promising candidates for intelligent and active food packaging applications.

Abstract:A sporadic case of Hallervorden-Spatz Syndrome was diagnosed before death. The diagnosis was made on clinical manifestations and histopathology of the tissue fragments obtained from the globus pallidus by stereotaxic brain biopsy. The involvement of thoracolumbar spinal cord is discussed. The cranial computed tomography showed caudate atrophy with bicaudate index (CC/OTcc) of 0.2, and the quotient FH/CC of 1.43, which were indistinguishable from Huntington's disease.

Abstract:Edible films have provided a breakthrough in reducing environmental pollution caused by non-degradable plastics. The present work aims to prepare novel biodegradable films with improved mechanical and barrier properties. Three different sizes of chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) were prepared based on ionic gelation by changing the mass ratio of chitosan (CS): tripolyphosphate (TPP). Two concentrations of CSNPs (5 wt% and 10 wt%) were incorporated into a blend of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) to create CSNP-reinforced composite films. The physicochemical, mechanical, and barrier properties of the CSNP-reinforced films were evaluated to determine the effects of particle size on the HPMC/HPS composite films. Both concentrations of CSNPs improved the hydrophobic properties, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and permeability of the films. The contact angle of CSNP-reinforced films was increased from 51.9° to 77.3°. The temperature at which thermal decomposition occurred was increased by about 10 °C. The maximum increase in elongation at break was 19.57%, without reducing the tensile strength of the films. The water vapor permeability of the reinforced films was reduced by up to 32.99%. In addition, the particle size of CSNPs had a significant effect on the properties of the composite films. Compared with larger CSNPs, adding small CSNPs (CS: TPP mass ratio = 3:1) into the HPMC/HPS matrices can form a denser network structure of films, which can better enhance the barrier properties and mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this study, chitosan (CS) was grafted with phenolic acids including gallic acid (GA-g-CS) and caffeic acid (CA-g-CS) through carbodiimide coupling. The conjugates were further developed into films by casting and were characterized in terms of appearance, structure, and mechanical and barrier properties, as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities; the purpose was to evaluate their potential application in food packaging. The results showed that the CA-g-CS film exhibited the highest tensile strength (10.67 ± 0.47 MPa) and elongation at break and had desirable barrier properties against water vapour (0.70 ± 0.02 g mm/m2h kPa) and oxygen (37.72 ± 0.23 meq/kg). In addition, both the GA-g-CS and CA-g-CS films displayed higher antioxidant activity than the CS films, while CA-g-CS also exhibited a significantly stronger (p < 0.05) inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis (G+) and Staphylococcus aureus (G+). These findings will contribute to a theoretical basis for the development of the CA-g-CS film into food packaging.

Abstract:Edible films based on chitosan, coix seed starch (CSS), nano zinc oxide (ZnO) and Artemisia annua essential oil (AO) were obtained through solvent casting method. Physico-chemical, biological properties and structures of the edible film were analyzed and the preservation effect of it on the quality of cold-stored pork was also investigated. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that some possible intermolecular interactions could exist between film matrix and ZnO or AO. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermogravimetry (TG) showed that ZnO and AO had good compatibility with the film biopolymers, no any phase separation. Results suggested that appropriate content of ZnO could enhance the film's compactness. Tensile strength (TS), barrier properties and antibacterial activities of the film was significantly enhanced with 5% ZnO was added. Incorporation of AO into the edible film decreased the TS, but increased the flexibility, barrier properties, antibacterial and antioxidant activities. When content of ZnO and AO were 5% and 8%, the physico-chemical, biological properties of the edible film could reach optimum. For pork preservation, pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total viable count (TVC), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values of the pork which treated with 5% ZnO-8% AO film were significantly lowest (p ≤ 0.05) than other groups. Therefore, this edible film system has potential as food packaging materials.
