Abstract:Background This systematic review investigates barriers and enablers to dental care utilization by disabled children. Given the high global prevalence of disabilities in children, coupled with poor oral hygiene and a 45% rate of dental caries in this group, developing inclusive oral health strategies is critical. The review aims to synthesize literature on factors affecting oral healthcare improvement for disabled children, identifying barriers, facilitators and knowledge gaps. Methods The review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute's methods and reported according to PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search spanned multiple databases, considering perspectives from carers, parents, dentists and health professionals. The focus was on studies involving children up to age 17 with disabilities, as defined by WHO, using dental care services. Exclusions included non‐qualitative studies, populations over 18 and nondisabled children. There were no restrictions on publication date or language. Thematic synthesis of the studies extracted themes related to barriers and enablers in oral healthcare for disabled children. Results Thematic synthesis identified five overarching themes: stigma, communication issues, professional development, oral health education and medical‐dental collaboration. Facilitators included enhancing accessibility and availability of dental care through a holistic approach, improving dental care facility environments and ensuring skilled dental care providers. Discussion The review underscores the importance of interprofessional collaboration, improved parent/caregiver education and specialized dental facilities to support children with disabilities. It identifies key barriers and facilitators in dental care, including challenging stereotypes, improving communication between providers and parents, enhancing holistic training and addressing gaps in oral health education and integrated healthcare systems. Conclusion Addressing the complex dynamics of dental care for disabled children is essential for developing inclusive and effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. This review highlights the need for tailored approaches and enhanced support systems to improve oral health outcomes in this vulnerable population. Factors affecting provision of oral health care for people with special health care needs: A systematic review

Abstract:Background: Special health care needs (SHCNs) individuals experience higher levels of dental problems including accessing oral health (OH) facilities. Improving standard of OH care in SHCNs requires identifying barriers and enablers. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of prior researches to identify OH care barriers and enablers for SHCN individuals. Methods: Electronic searching was conducted systematically in PubMed and Cochrane databases. The PICOS parameters were formulated for the inclusion of studies, and the PRISMA method was used to select the articles. Two reviewers independently screened the articles for eligibility and to minimise the risk of bias in the studies and also searched the contents of key articles, quality of methodology, outcomes and reference lists of all the studies included. Results: A total of 1316 (PubMed 956, Cochrane 360) studies were found initially and after title and abstract screening and also removal of duplication, reviewers selected 53 papers from PubMED and 19 articles from Cochrane to go through full articles and led to the final confirmation of 21 studies. Common challenges included lack of OH knowledge and awareness, difficulty in accessing treatment, transportation problem, treatment cost, and lack of inter-professional collaboration for specialized services. Potential solutions included OHE training and services for patients and caregivers, easy access to dental services, specialized dental practitioners and use of a combination of expertise to meet the demands of SHCN individuals. Conclusion: This brief analysis will establish dental obstacles to the provision of information to policymakers for SHCN population at organizational, individuals and policy levels. It will help in effective planning for providing and improving OH care quality in caregivers.

Abstract:Introduction/background: Oral health care for children with special health-care needs (CSHCN) is often overlooked despite a substantial global population with disabilities or special needs. This scoping review delves into the challenges dentists face in delivering oral health care to CSHCN. Methodology: The scoping review was conducted as per the guidelines of PRISMA-ScR with a search strategy based on the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) framework of the research question. The databases searched were PUBMED, Google Scholar, and EBSCOhost. Articles published within 20 years and in the English language were included in the study. Results: The review included 20 studies and highlighted several significant barriers encountered by dentists when providing oral health care for CSHCN. They included inadequate training among dentists in managing special needs patients, the time-intensive nature of oral procedures for this population, and the unpredictable behaviors exhibited by CSHCN during dental visits. Conclusion: The findings underscore the crucial need to address the challenges dentists face in delivering oral health care to CSHCN.

Abstract:Background: Oral health is essential for overall well-being and can significantly improve quality of life. However, people with special health care needs (SHCN) often face challenges in accessing dental services. This study aimed to systematically review all available evidence on the oral and dental service utilization determinants among these individuals. Based on the findings, we also explore strategies to increase their access to dental care. Method: This study is a systematic review of reviews based on the PRISMA 2020. Six databases were systematically searched including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, ProQuest, and Cochrane Library. Related keywords were applied up to 30 October 2023. This study includes all systematic, scoping, and rapid reviews written in English that examine the factors affecting dental service use among SHCNs. Microsoft Power BI was used for descriptive quantitative analysis, and MAXQDA version 10 was applied for qualitative thematic analysis. Results: The number of 2238 articles were retrieved based on the search strategy. After excluding duplications and appraising the eligibility, 7 articles were included. An examination of these 7 articles shows that they were all carried out from 2016 to 2022. Of these, 42% were systematic reviews, 42% used a scoping method, and one study (14%) was a rapid review. According to the thematic analysis, there were five main themes concerning determinants of oral and dental utilization of SHCN: "Financial considerations," "Patient-Provider Relationship," "Accessibility and Availability of Services," "Patient Factors," and "Quality of Care." Additionally, regarding strategies for improving utilization, three main themes emerged: "Education and Training," "Service Improvement," and "Policy Solutions. Conclusion: This study delves into the intricate challenges SHCNs face in accessing dental services, highlighting the imperative for comprehensive interventions addressing supply and demand. Supply-oriented measures encompass dentist education, implementing financial policies for affordable services, and integrating dental care into primary healthcare systems. On the demand side, strategies revolve around empowering patients and caregivers and enhancing cultural inclusivity. Despite sustained efforts, current utilization rates fall short of optimal levels. Thus, effective strategic planning by policymakers and healthcare leaders is paramount to bolster dental service utilization among SHCNs, thereby enhancing their overall well-being.

Abstract:Oral health is an essential component of overall health for all individuals. The oral health of children and youth with developmental disabilities (CYDD) involves unique characteristics and needs of which pediatricians and pediatric clinicians can be aware. Risk for oral disease in CYDD is multifactorial and includes underlying medical conditions, medications, and ability to participate in preventive oral health care and treatment, and lack of access to providers is common for this population despite being eligible for Medicaid. Pediatric clinicians are uniquely positioned to support the oral health needs of CYDD and their families through the medical home. This clinical report aims to inform pediatric clinicians about the unique oral health needs of CYDD. It provides guidance on assessing caries risk and periodontal status using structured screening instruments; understanding dental trauma, the role of diet and caries risk, trauma prevention, and malocclusion; and providing anticipatory guidance on oral hygiene that includes tooth brushing, use of fluoridated toothpaste, assessing community water fluoridation, advocating for a dental home by 1 year of age, and transition to adult dental care as part of adolescent health care. It also highlights special considerations for dental treatment rendered under sedation or general anesthesia that CYDD may need. Pediatric clinicians can help reduce risk of CYDD developing dental disease by understanding the unique needs of their patients and their barriers to accessing oral health care in their community, communicating with the child's dental home, and advocating for safe and accessible dental procedures.

Abstract:Introduction: People with special care needs often face significant barriers in accessing dental care due to physical and cognitive limitations, leading to high rates of dental issues like caries. Despite the growing recognition of these challenges, unmet dental care needs remain prevalent. This review aims to explore the global landscape of special care dentistry to identify gaps and opportunities for improving dental services for this population. Methodology: A systematic search was conducted across three online databases—PubMed, Embase, and Scopus—to identify relevant articles from their inception through May 2024. Reference lists of the selected studies were also screened for additional sources. A thematic synthesis approach was applied to derive both descriptive and analytical themes. The scoping review was guided by the Arksey and O'Malley framework to examine the scope and nature of studies and documents related to dental care for individuals with special care needs. Furthermore, a Google search was performed to include accessible theses and official government documents from various countries. Results: A total of 49 studies from 11 countries were reviewed, all centered on providing dental care for people with special needs. The analysis revealed three main themes: Human resources, care delivery model, and management. Within these, nine subthemes emerged: Mid-level oral care providers, dentists, special care dentistry as a specialty, tele-dentistry, mobile dentistry, hospital care, levels of healthcare provision, financial support, and education. These themes and subthemes highlight essential areas for enhancing services for those people. Conclusions: A holistic approach is essential to enhance dental care for people with special needs (PWSNS). Critical strategies, including the involvement of mid-level oral care providers, the adoption of tele-dentistry and mobile units, and the availability of hospital-based services for complex cases, are crucial. To truly transform care for those people, each country must adapt these strategies to its specific context, aligning resources and policies to create an inclusive, accessible, and effective system.

Abstract:Background: Oral health is a critical component of overall well-being. However, students with disabilities (SWDs) face unique challenges in maintaining oral hygiene and accessing dental care. This study aims to explore oral health behaviours, dental care utilisation, and barriers to accessing dental care among SWDs in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, from the perspectives of their parents. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among parents of SWDs in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire covering oral health behaviours, dental care utilisation, and barriers to care. The sample size was determined based on the SWDs population in the region. Data were analysed using descriptive and analytical statistics, with significant associations identified at p < 0.05. Results: Findings revealed that 45.7% of SWDs brushed irregularly, with only 16.8% brushing twice a day or more. Dental flossing was reported by just 4.3% of SWDs. Emergency-based dental visits were common (51.9%), and 29.5% of SWDs had never visited a dentist. Significant associations were found between maternal education and tooth brushing frequency (p = 0.004) and between parental education and the frequency of dental visits (p = 0.035). The most reported barriers included fear of treatment (47.1%), difficulty finding willing dentists (45.5%), and long wait times for appointments (44.7%). Conclusions: The study emphasises the pressing need for targeted interventions to improve oral hygiene practices and enhance accessibility to dental services for SWDs.

Abstract:This article identifies the multifaceted challenges that hinder optimal oral health among children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While dental care is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, children with ASD encounter unique obstacles that often go unnoticed. Drawing from a comprehensive review of existing literature and insights from healthcare professionals, this article explores the sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, and behavioral issues that contribute to suboptimal oral hygiene in this demographic. We also discuss the critical role of caregivers, dentists, and educators in addressing these challenges, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and tailored strategies to improve the oral health of children with ASD. By shedding light on these obstacles, this article aims to foster a more inclusive and holistic approach to oral healthcare for children with ASD, ultimately enhancing their overall quality of life.

Abstract:Dental care is the most common unmet health care need of children. Those at increased risk for problems with oral health and access to care are from poor or minority families, lack health insurance, or have special health care needs. These factors place more than 52 percent of children at risk for untreated oral disease. Measures of access and parental report indicate unmet oral health needs, but do not provide guidance as to the nature of children's oral health needs. Children's oral health needs can be predicted from their developmental changes and position in the life span. their dependency and environmental context, and current demographic changes. Specific gaps in education include training of general dentists to care for infants and young children and those with special health care needs, as well as training of pediatric providers and other professionals caring for children in oral health promotion and disease prevention. Educational focus on the technical aspects of dentistry leaves little time for important interdisciplinary health and/or social issues. It will not be possible to address these training gaps without further integration of dentistry with medicine and other health professions. Children's oral health care is the shared moral responsibility of dental and other professionals working with children, parents, and society. Academic dental centers hold in trust the training of oral health professionals for society and have a special responsibility to train future professionals to meet children's needs. Leadership in this area is urgently needed.

Mapping the block of a cloned human inward rectifier potassium channel by dofetilide.

Abstract:Dofetilide, a methanesulfonanilide derivative, is a potent class III antiarrhythmic drug. Like other members of this class of K+ channel blockers, the sites in the channel to which the drug binds are unknown, although high and low affinity binding has been reported in cardiomyocytes. The most sensitive K+ channel target for dofetilide seems to be IKr, the rapid component of the repolarizing delayed rectifier K+ current. However, block of other K+ channels occurs at higher concentrations and is of special interest in regard to toxicity. Recently, we have demonstrated that hIRK, a cloned inward rectifier K+ channel (IRK) isolated from human atrium and expressed heterologously in Xenopus oocytes, is blocked by dofetilide. We report the localization of a site that is critical for dofetilide block in hIRK. We used chimeric constructs between hIRK and ROMK1, a related inward rectifier that is drug resistant. Substitution of hIRK-M2, the second putative transmembrane spanning segment of IRKs, with ROMK1-M2 increased unblocking of dofetilide by 10-20-fold in hIRK. Site-directed mutagenesis further pinpointed the effects to a single hydrophobic residue (I177) in M2. A reduction in hydrophobicity by the point mutation I177C increased recovery from block > 10-fold (1.17 sec in wild-type to 0.112 sec at -80 mV at physiological K+ concentrations), leading us to suggest that hydrophobic interactions are essential for dofetilide block in hIRK. A similar mechanism may explain dofetilide block in other ion channels, including IKr.
Effects of cytokine application on glucocorticoid secretion in an animal model for systemic scleroderma.

Abstract:We previously reported on an altered immune-endocrine feedback loop via the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in Obese strain (OS) chickens afflicted with spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis. These animals are deficient in plasma corticosterone increase after antigenic challenge or application of cytokine-containing conditioned medium of mitogen-stimulated spleen cells (CM). To investigate whether the impaired ability to respond to cytokines with glucocorticoid-increasing factor (GIF) activity, e.g. interleukin 1 (IL 1), is restricted to OS chickens as a model for an organ-specific autoimmune disease, we extended our experiments to another autoimmune-prone animal strain, the chickens of the University of California at Davis line 200 (UCD-200). These animals develop an inherited inflammatory fibrotic disease that closely resembles human progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). Application of GIF-containing CM to UCD-200 chickens leads to a transient increase in glucocorticoid serum levels within 1-2 hours comparable to that of controls. But, while corticosterone levels in the latter returned to normal baseline levels after 4 hours, they were still elevated in autoimmune chickens. Although the peak of the glucocorticoid hormone serum concentrations was equal to that of controls, UCD-200 had to secrete twice as much adrenocorticotropic hormone to achieve this corticosterone serum level due to an apparent hyporesponsiveness of the adrenal gland to this secretagogue. The altered cytokine-induced glucocorticoid secretion is found in early as well as in chronic, sclerotic stages of the disease. Cellular alterations in the peripheral blood of UCD-200 chickens during the prolonged elevated corticosterone section, i.e. between 2-4 hours after CM application, are characterized by a significant decrease in the percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ cells. Furthermore, a significant increase in B cells up to 24 hours with a maximum after 1 hour was found. The proliferative response to the mitogen concanavalin A of peripheral mononuclear cells was inversely correlated to the serum corticosterone level, showing a permanent decrease of 80-90% after 1-4 hours in autoimmune animals. This functional alteration in UCD-200 was accompanied by an 80% decrease in serum interleukin 2 (sIL 2) activity 4 hours after CM application. Twenty-four hours later an eight-fold increase in sIL 2 rebound activity was found, indicating that the inhibitory effect of corticosterone in UCD-200 chickens is not long-lasting.
Barriers to Oral Health Care for Autistic Individuals—A Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: Challenges in providing adequate dental care for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are recognised by parents, caregivers, and dental practitioners, leading to a higher prevalence of unaddressed dental needs. This scoping review aims to explore existing research on the obstacles to oral health care as perceived by individuals with ASD, as reported by their parents, caregivers, and dental professionals. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted in DOSS, Medline, and PubMed databases using relevant keywords to identify relevant studies. Barriers identified within these studies were then categorised based on themes identified. Results: The initial search yielded a total of 254 studies. Following the removal of duplicates and screening of titles and abstracts, 47 studies were further assessed against predetermined criteria, ultimately resulting in the inclusion of 16 articles in this scoping review. The identified barriers were grouped into five overarching themes: challenges in accessing appropriate care (n = 8), negative past experiences (n = 5), parental perceptions of the impact of ASD (n = 8), clinician bias (n = 2), and clinician education (n = 7). Conclusions: The findings of this review highlight the obstacles faced by individuals with ASD in obtaining routine oral health care. These results underscore the imperative for the development, testing, and implementation of tailored interventions focused on autism, as well as their integration into educational curricula for dental practitioners at various educational levels. This approach aims to enhance the delivery of equitable oral health care to individuals with ASD, starting from undergraduate through to postgraduate dental education.

Abstract:Background Children with disabilities generally face poorer oral health outcomes compared with their non‐disabled peers due to a range of factors including inadequate oral hygiene, infrequent dental visits and systemic barriers in accessing care. Aim This ethnographic study explored the perspectives of caregivers and professionals to identify the ways that children with disabilities are included in oral health. Design A purposive sample of 10 caregivers, all mothers with disabled children aged 9–15 years, five healthcare providers and five educators in Saudi Arabia, participated. Data collection used participant observation and semi‐structured in‐depth interviews. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results The findings suggest that mothers lacked a supportive environment to develop their skills and knowledge about oral health care, preventing them from including their children in oral health. Inaccessible services added to the exclusion of both mothers and children. Some dental professionals exhibited poor communication skills and discriminatory attitudes towards the children and problematising mothers. Educators tended to discuss disabled children in terms of inability, displaying a deficit approach to impairment. Conclusions The evidence suggests the exclusion of mothers from oral health. This has an impact on how they enable their children. Recommendations include adopting a social model of disability in dental education and policies in Saudi Arabia to address inequalities. Provision of support, education and focusing on societal barriers moves towards inclusion rather than conceptualising disability as an individual problem.

Abstract:Aim: This systematic review aims to assess effectiveness of oral health policies, recommendations and guidelines in safeguarding oral health of children with special healthcare needs during COVID-19. Background: This systematic review evaluated the adaptation of global oral health policies for children with special healthcare needs (SHCN) during the COVID-19 pandemic, to provide evidence-based insights to inform policymakers and healthcare providers amid the ongoing global health crisis. The study focused on assessing the effectiveness of these adaptations in ensuring equitable access to quality dental care for this vulnerable group. Methods: A PRISMA guided online search through LILIACS, PubMed, Scopus, COCHRANE and grey literature was conducted. The search strategy incorporated a combination of subject headings (MeSH terms) and free-text terms related to "oral health," "dental health," "policy," "effectiveness," "dental practice guidelines," "oral health policies," and "special care needs children." Eligibility criteria included oral health policies, recommendations and guidelines targeting individuals/children with special care needs. Both qualitative and quantitative studies published in English from 2008 to 2023 were included. Results: Sixteen guidelines, recommendations and policies, from six authorities were identified. These documentations addressed six different areas mentioned broadly as comprehensive care, ethical considerations, preventive and therapeutic measures, equity, patient-centric treatment, and reducing disparities signaling a paradigm shift. International collaborations and standardization of guidelines indicated a unified approach. The review also emphasized on a commitment to continuous improvement through quality measurement, systematic referral management, and needs assessment. With the exception of two documents, the remaining guidelines did not address COVID-19 or provide specific adaptations for it. The lack of emphasis on individual condition was notable, as the guidelines generally took a more generalized approach toward individuals with special healthcare needs. Conclusions: In conclusion, this review assessed the impact of COVID-19 on oral healthcare for individuals with special needs. It underscores global and local efforts for equitable access, patient-centric care, and preventive measures. The lessons learned advocate for a resilient, inclusive healthcare framework capable of meeting diverse needs. Prospero registration: CRD 42023452475.
[The ultrastructural aspects of the synovial intima and subintima in arthrosis].

Abstract:Synovial membrane removed surgically from patients during developing degenerative joint disease were studied under a scanning and transmission microscope. The results show that the synovial membrane is folding into villi of average dimensions (microvilli and macrovilli) which project into articular cavity. In regard to the villi, the morphology is locally changeable, with the atrophic-sclerotic areas alternated with hyperplastic areas, but topographically well defined. In the last ones, structural modifications of the intima layer, are characterized by hypertrophy of B synoviocytes, which are constituent and predominant cells in comparison with other cell-types. In the subintima around ectatic vessels, the linfomonocitary inflammatory infiltrations may be found. These alterations are the results of active biological process and because of this synovial membrane is of big importance in developing of osteoarthritis.
The Oral Health Inequities between Special Needs Children and Normal Children in Asia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:This meta-analysis aimed to analyze the oral health inequalities among special needs children during 2004–2019 in Asia to reveal the importance and the needs of establishing integrated and equitable special needs dentistry care system in Indonesia. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Wiley Online Library were systematically searched for full-text observational studies published from 1 January 2004 to 15 January 2020, in English in Asia. Studies that included children under 18 years of age with special needs and compared them to healthy controls were selected. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute 2017 Critical Appraisal Checklist. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-E tool. The decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index indicated that special needs children who suffer from intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder had significantly more caries than normal children (p < 0.001). The special needs children who had more caries than normal children lived in countries that had a high average DMFT value among 12 years old children (p < 0.001), and these two variables showed a positive correlation in meta-regression analysis (p < 0.001). Having an integrated and equitable care system and elevating children’s oral health are important to maintain special needs children’s oral health.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES We sought to estimate the prevalence of oral health problems and receipt of preventive oral health (POH) services among children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and investigate associations with child- and family-level characteristics. METHODS We used pooled data from the 2016–2018 National Survey of Children’s Health. The analytic sample was limited to children 1 to 17 years old, including 23 099 CYSHCN and 75 612 children without special health care needs (non-CYSHCN). Parent- and caregiver-reported measures of oral health problems were fair or poor teeth condition, decayed teeth and cavities, toothaches, and bleeding gums. POH services were preventive dental visits, cleanings, tooth brushing and oral health care instructions, fluoride, and sealants. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS A higher proportion of CYSHCN than non-CYSHCN received a preventive dental visit in the past year (84% vs 78%, P < .0001). Similar patterns were found for the specific preventive services examined. However, CYSHCN had higher rates of oral health problems compared with non-CYSHCN. For example, decayed teeth and cavities were reported in 16% of CYSHCN versus 11% in non-CYSHCN (P < .0001). In adjusted analyses, several factors were significantly associated with decreased prevalence of receipt of POH services among CYSHCN, including younger or older age, lower household education, non-English language, lack of health insurance, lack of a medical home, and worse condition of teeth. CONCLUSIONS CYSHCN have higher rates of POH service use yet worse oral health status than non-CYSHCN. Ensuring appropriate use of POH services among CYSHCN is critical to the reduction of oral health problems.

Bifurcation study of phase oscillator systems with attractive and repulsive interaction.

Abstract:We study a model of globally coupled phase oscillators that contains two groups of oscillators with positive (synchronizing) and negative (desynchronizing) incoming connections for the first and second groups, respectively. This model was previously studied by Hong and Strogatz (the Hong-Strogatz model) in the case of a large number of oscillators. We consider a generalized Hong-Strogatz model with a constant phase shift in coupling. Our approach is based on the study of invariant manifolds and bifurcation analysis of the system. In the case of zero phase shift, various invariant manifolds are analytically described and a new dynamical mode is found. In the case of a nonzero phase shift we obtained a set of bifurcation diagrams for various systems with three or four oscillators. It is shown that in these cases system dynamics can be complex enough and include multistability and chaotic oscillations.

Abstract:A high prevalence of dental caries is a significant health problem, especially in the pediatric population. Low-income minority groups, including the refugee and immigrant populations, are at higher risk of compromised oral health. It has been suggested that migrant parents do not have enough understanding of oral health, risk factors associated with dental caries, or the progress of dental decay. This systematic review aims to study quantitative literature on oral health interventions, health promotion programs, or behaviour change interventions targeting the parents/ caregivers of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) children. A systematic search of electronic databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, PUBMED, CINAHL, SCOPUS, WEB OF SCIENCE, COCHRANE, and PROQUEST, was conducted until August 2023. Randomised (RCT) or non-randomised controlled trials (NRCTs) were included. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the included studies using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (RoB) 2.0 and ROBINS-I tools. Meta-analysis was performed as appropriate. The initial search from the databases retrieved 2073 articles. After the removal of duplicates, 1683 articles remained. Finally, 69 articles were reviewed in full text, and 15 articles were considered eligible in this review. The RoB assessment for RCTs rated three as low-risk and three as high-risk. The serious RoB in these NRCTs mostly pertained to measurement bias based on self-reporting oral health behaviours. The meta-analysis pooling of results (for RCTs and NRCTs) favoured interventions for CALD parents' oral health knowledge [0.73 (95% CI, 0.08 to 1.38) for RCTs, 1.73 (95% CI; 1.45 to 2.02) for NRCTs] and attitudes [0.86 (95% CI, 0.31 to 1.42)]. Relatively high heterogeneity was observed. Oral health educational interventions can be effective in improving the oral health literacy of CALD parents' oral health knowledge and attitudes, especially when facilitated by lay health advisors. However, the low quality of evidence due to high heterogeneity and high RoB further highlighted the need for well-designed RCTs targeting CALD parents.
