Abstract:Objective:To report the nonsurgical correction of congenital auricular deformities in children older than 3 months, analysis the effect and the recurrence and the influencing factors. Method:Patients with auricular deformities who came to our department from July 2017 to August 2019 were collected. EarWell correction was performed for non-invasive correction. Follow-up was performed for at least 3 months after treatment. Data was collected to analysis the effect and the recurrence and the influencing factors. Result:At the end of follow-up, 76 cases of 88 ears were collected, at the end of treatment in this group, the efficiency was 87.5%, and the recurrence rate was 19.48%, 3 months after the end of treatment. There was a statistically significant difference in the distribution of auricle deformities（P=0.018） and the age of first treatment（P=0.028） between children in the effective group and those in the ineffective group. Of all the auricle deformities, the treatment of cryptotia was the most effective, and the effectiveness of prominent ears was the lowest. The family history（P=0.314）, gender（P=0.421）, and feeding method（P=0.557） of the effective and ineffective groups. There was no significant difference in the gestational weeks at birth（P=0.641）, the mode of production（P=0.849）, and birth weight（P=0.08）. There was no significant difference in age between the relapsed group and the non-relapsed group at the age of first treatment（P=0.833）.There was significant difference in the distribution of auricle deformities between the relapsed group and the non-relapsed group（P=0.013）. There was no statistically significant difference between the effective group and the ineffective group at the age of first diagnosis and treatment time if we exclude cryptotia. Conclusion:For children who are treated beyond the treatment time window, the main factor affecting the treatment effect is the type of deformity. Nonsurgical correction can still be tried for older than 3 months with auricular deformities, especially for cryptotia, ear wheel deformities, and auricular cavity deformities. We do not recommend to try nonsurgical correction for children older than 3 months with prominent ears and cup ears.
Nonsurgical molding of congenital auricular deformities and analysis of the correction outcomes: A single-center, retrospective study in east China

Abstract:Objective: Our research was carried out to provide a clinical reference for the application of nonsurgical therapy in newborns with congenital auricular deformities in east China. Methods: A retrospective study of consecutive newborns using noninvasive ear molding was conducted in Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province. The demographic and clinical information and photographs of the ear before and after treatment were taken. The diagnosis of each auricular deformity was identified, and the treatment outcome was evaluated. Results: A total of 224 patients including 356 congenital ear anomalies received noninvasive ear molding. The median age of infants to initiate treatment was 39.5 days. The median treatment duration was 42.5 days. The median follow-up time was 137.0 days. The overall treatment effective rate of all infants with nonoperative ear molding was 92.1%, and mild skin irritation and ulceration occurred in 34 ear deformities (9.6%). It confirmed that the treatment efficiency was satisfactory and the complication rate was still acceptable despite the late initiation treatment of neonates in east China. Further analysis of treatment outcomes among three subgroups of infants (the ages to initiate the ear molding were respectively less than or equal to 28, 29–56, and more than 57 days) revealed that initiation treatment was significantly related to the treatment results and the earlier the initiation treatment, the higher the effective rate and the lower the complication incidence. Conclusion: Our study hints that newborns in east China may have a longer period for correction. What is more, although our study affirmed a longer period for noninvasive molding, early diagnosis and treatment are still recommended to improve therapy efficiency and reduce treatment duration and complications.

[Therapeutic effect analysis of non-invasive ear moldings on correcting congenital auricular deformity in 435 ears]

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of non-invasive ear moldings on correcting congenital auricular deformity of infants. Methods:A total of 435 ears with congenital auricular deformity were treated in the department of Otorhinolaryngology of Chengdu Women and Children's Central Hospital from December 2019 to July 2023. The infants were divided into 3 groups according to the initial treatment age, i. e. , 0-30 days（group A, n=106, 175 ears）, 31-90 days（group B, n=124, 202 ears） and ≥91 days（group C, n=37, 58 ears）. All infants were corrected with Chinese ear moldings. The efficacy, complication rate and treatment duration were compared among the three groups, and the treatments of different types of auricle deformity was analyzed. Results:Through comparison of three groups, the results showed that the markedly effective and cured rate of group A was the highest, and group C was the lowest. The difference was statistically significant（P=0.008）. Specially, there was a significant decrease of after 5 months in Group C. There was no significant difference in the complication rate among the three groups（P=0.232）, and the occurrence of complications has no significant impact on treatment. Group C has the longest treatment duration and group A has the shortest. The difference was statistically significant（P<0.001）. Conclusion:Congenital auricle deformity should be early detected and intervened. The younger the age of children, the better efficacy and shorter treatment duration can be acquired. Children under 5 months still will receive a good treatment. Nevertheless, for children older than 5 months, corrective treatment may also be considered. The efficacy for malformations was significantly lower than that of deformations. The number of cases, efficacy and complication rate for different types of deformations were significantly different.
Clinical Features, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Different Types of Congenital Preauricular Fistulas in Pediatric Patients

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to summarize the clinical features of congenital preauricular fistula (CPF) in pediatric patients to improve the levels of diagnosis and treatment, reduce the rates of missed diagnosis and recurrence, and shorten the total diagnosis and treatment time.Methods: A total of 353 patients with CPF who were admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology in The Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine between January 2019 and December 2021 was enrolled in this retrospective observational study. Follow ups for 12-42 months were performed to investigate the classification, surgical methods, and postoperative conditions of CPF and to compare the recurrence rate, complication rate, and total diagnosis and treatment time between the active infection CPF group (AICPFG) and infection-controlled/non-infected CPF group (IC/NICPFG).Results: In 316 cases (89.5%) out of the 353 patients, the natural fistula orifice was located in front of the crus helicis; in 33 cases (9.4%), the natura fistula orifice was located at the crus helicis; and in 4 cases (1.1%), the natura fistula orifice was located in the external acoustic meatus. The AICPFG had 52 cases (14.7%), including 1 case (0.28%) of recurrence and 2 cases (0.56%) of infection at the incision site. The IC/NICPFG had 301 cases (85.3%), including 4 cases (1.13%) of recurrence, 6 cases (1.7%) of infection at the incision site, and 1 case (0.28%) of scar formation at the incision site. There were no significant differences in the recurrence rates and postoperative complications between the AICPFG and IC/NICPFG (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the total diagnosis and treatment time between the AICPFG and IC/NICPFG (p < 0.05). Conclusion: A reasonable classification of CPF, use of appropriate surgical methods, and belonging to the AICPFG do not increase the recurrence and complication rates of children but shorten the total treatment course, relieve patients' suffering, reduce treatment costs, and achieve a better clinical prognosis.
Nonoperative Molding of Congenital Ear Deformities: The Impact of Birth-Initiation Delay on Correction Outcome

Abstract:Ear molding can improve the majority congenital ear deformities when employed early after birth. However, the best time to initiate treatment remains debated. In describing one surgeon's experience over the past near decade, this study aims to highlight differences conferred by treatment timing. The authors hypothesize that auricular outcomes are superior when deformities are molded beginning in the first 3 weeks of life. A retrospective review (2010-2018) of 272 cases was performed to compare early initiation of molding (<3 weeks of birth) and delayed initiation (>3 weeks). The mean patient age was 20.4 days and the mean follow-up was 0.5 months. The overall treatment was approximately 31 days. The number of devices required was similar (2.3 versus 2.5) between early and delayed molding cases, but fall-outs (1.0 versus 0.7, P = 0.02) and replacements (0.9 versus 0.6, P = 0.004) were more common after delayed molding. Skin complications developed in 13.6% (37) of ears overall and did not differ by treatment timing. Follow-up surgery was reported in 2 (0.7%) ears. The 85% of families reported subjective satisfaction with the final outcome; satisfaction was significantly higher for early cases (97% versus 79%, P = 0.03). Ear molding of congenital ear deformities should begin within 3 weeks of birth. From our experience, setting realistic expectations helps limit discrepancies between expectation and outcome.

Abstract:In-stent restenosis is mainly caused by neointima proliferation and represents a pathological process which histology is different from that of restenosis after balloon angioplasty. Frequency of in-stent restenoses increases parallel with progressively increasing number of procedures of coronary stenting. The review summarizes results of research devoted to restenosis pathology and pathogenesis including animal studies, presents methods of mechanical treatment of in-stent restenoses (balloon inflation, direct and rotational atherectomy), as well as techniques of beta and gamma irradiation aimed at prevention of restenosis development.
[Congenital auricular anomalies: Early non-surgical correction by splinting]

Abstract:Objectives: Auricular deformities therapy by external molding is possible. It must be undertaken early, ideally before the sixth week of life. Persistency of maternal hormones impregnation during the first six weeks of life permits to maintain the malleable cartilages. They can thus be molded into a new position. After the end of this hormonal therapy, the cartilages gradually become rigid in a specific position. Material and methods: All infants under 6 weeks of age with isolated auricular deformities between July 2015 and July 2016 received a neonatal treatment with an external molding device called EarWell© or a custom-made one with silicone. The device was removed when the infant was 6 weeks old and had a treatment duration of at least 4 weeks. A 6 months minimum follow-up was carried out to evaluate the result. Results: From July 2015 to July 2016, 42 deformed ears were treated in 38 newborns. The average age to apply the device was 2 weeks of life with a treatment duration of 5 weeks. The immediate outcome was evaluated as excellent by the parents in 81% of cases, with an ear judged as "normal" and as excellent by the surgeon in 75% of cases. There were no major complications. Conclusions: External molding therapy for infants with ear deformities has proved to be effective in 75 to 81% of cases. It is a non-invasive treatment that avoids subsequent surgical treatment for the majority of patients.

Abstract:Ear, Nose &Throat Journal, Ahead of Print. Purpose: Congenital malformation of the ossicular chain results in challenges with hearing and language development in children. We aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics, prognosis, and surgical treatments of different types of congenital ossicular chain malformations in children. Methods: Eight cases (10 ears) treated between October 2019 and February 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were divided according to the location of the ossicular chain malformation and whether it was complicated by external ear malformation. Imaging, audiological examination, intraoperative exploration of the middle ear, and postoperative outcomes were recorded. Results: Group 1 incudostapedial joint deformity): 6 ears/60%; Group 2 (simple incus deformity): 2 ears/20%; Group 3 (simple malleus deformity): 2 ears/20%; Group A (with external ear malformations): 4 ears/40%; Group B (without external ear malformations): 6 ears/60%. The average hearing threshold before and after the operation was 51.25 ± 12.88 and 31.94 ± 12.96 dB, respectively. There were differences in the intervention effects of different malformed sites (Group 1: t = 5.139, P = .004; Group 2: t = 13.500, P = .047; Group 3: t = 15.000, P = .042). The effect of the intervention in cases of malformation with mobile stapes footplates was better than that with immobile stapes footplates (t = 4.082, P = .027). The effect of the intervention without external ear malformations was better than that with external ear malformations (t = 7.706, P = .001). Conclusions: The intervention yielded superior results in cases of malformation with mobile stapes footplates compared to those with immobile stapes footplates. Different intervention strategies should be determined through precise deformity assessments, with the degree of stapes mobility serving as a crucial factor in improving the prognosis.

A double‐blind randomised trial to evaluate the effect of anastrozole for the treatment of non‐toxic multinodular goitre

Abstract:Multinodular goitre (MNG) is a common clinical finding, particularly in females and is usually asymptomatic. When symptoms occur because of local pressure‐related effects the only treatment is surgical involving partial or total thyroidectomy. A number of epidemiological observations and experimental data have suggested that oestrogen aromatase activity may be involved in the pathogenesis of MNG. This study examines the effect of anastrozole, a non‐steroidal aromatase inhibitor that inhibits the peripheral conversion of testosterone to oestradiol, in reducing the size of MNG. Thirty‐two post‐menopausal female patients, median age 63 years (range 42–84) were randomised in a double‐blind fashion to receive either anastrozole 1 mg daily or placebo for 3 months. Ultrasonographic measurement of each thyroid lobe and isthmus together with complete biochemical and hormone profiles were performed at the start and end of treatment. There was no significant reduction in the goitre size for patients in the anastrozole group (p = 0.246) or the placebo group (p = 0.418). There were no significant changes in hormone profiles (including throglobulin concentration) within each group between the start and end of the study. We conclude that the use of anastrozole in the treatment of MNG does not appear to have any effect in reducing the size of MNG.
3D Technique-Based Nonsurgical Correction of Deformational Congenital Auricular Deformities

Abstract:Introduction: Congenital auricular deformity (CAD) is a common postpartum deformity, and nonsurgical correction of CAD has been recognized as a safe and effective approach. Three-dimensional (3D) technique has been used in surgical reconstruction of unilateral microtia; however, 3D technique used in nonsurgical correction for deformational CAD has not been reported. Methods: In this study, 12 CAD patients aged from 0.6 to 7 months with 16 deformational CAD were treated with 3D technique-based personalized nonsurgical correction (3D-NSC). Patients’ CAD was photographed pre- and post-correction, and clinical outcome was evaluated as poor, fair, good, and excellent by comparing pre- and post-correction pictures. Different kinds of tests were used to analyze the data. Results: All patients got an improved auricle shape (10 excellent, 2 good, and 4 fair). Multivariate regression analysis showed that CAD type was significantly associated with correction outcome, sex and age were significantly associated with correction outcome for the 11 constructed types of CAD, and age was significantly associated with the correction outcome when we focused on the male constructed auricles. Conclusion: 3D-NSC provided a significant nonsurgical clinical treatment for CAD patients, with younger patients getting better clinical outcomes with shorter correction time.

Abstract:On NOV 20, 1959, while a Senior Investigator at the National Institutes of Health and a commissioned officer in the Public Health Service, I reported to the PHS outpatient clinic in the Health, Education, and Welfare building in Washington for a biennial physical examination. Included were a complete ophthalmoscopic examination, an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) examination, a dental evaluation, physical examination of the chest and abdomen, rectal examination, a sigmoidoscopy, and a complete neurological examination. In addition, in the laboratory a two-hour postprandial blood sugar, serum lipids, blood urea nitrogen, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, differential count, and a complete urinalysis were performed. Abstract:Purpose To evaluate how prosthetic management affects the otological and audiological state of infants with cleft lip and palate by preventing or treating otitis media (OM). Materials and Methods Thirty infants with cleft lip and palate (L/P) were assigned to three equal groups according to the age of prosthetic intervention; Group I: immediately after birth, Group II: 2 months old, Group III: 5 months old. Assessment of middle ear function by tympanometry and hearing quality by auditory brainstem response (ABR) under natural sleep was conducted before and after prosthetic treatment every month till 10 months of age. Data from the study groups were compared. Results No statistically significant differences were found between Gp I and Gp II in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th months for right and left ears (p > 0.05). In the 5th month, statistically significant differences between the three groups were found in tympanometry for right (p = 0.011) and left (p = 0.024) ears also, in ABR for right (p = 0.007) and left (p = 0.011) ears. Tympanometric readings starting from the 6th till the 10th month showed no statistically significant differences between the three groups (p >0.05). The final ABR outcomes of the 10th month indicated statistically significant differences between the three groups for both ears (p = 0.027). Conclusions Early prosthetic care could delay the development of OM, so it could potentially improve the otological and audiological state in infants with cleft L/P. However, prosthetic treatment may not be able to completely prevent or eliminate middle ear disorders.

Newborn Ear Defomities and Their Treatment Efficiency with Earwell Infant Ear Correction System in China.

Abstract:Introduction: Newborn ear deformity can be performed through Earwell infant ear correction system as a nonsurgical treatment to avoid plastic surgery. In the newborn period, the auricle is soft and the cartilage is plastic, the deformed auricle shape can be treated by mechanical action. Methods: From April 2016 to December 2018, we selected the patients who underwent Earwell non-invasive correction system in Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University for newborn ear deformities, and analyze the treatment age, treatment time, efficiency and complication of these patients. Results: There were 105 patients with 141 ears underwent Earwell non-invasive correction system for newborn ear deformities. The average age for treatment is 2.16 +/- 2.28 months (0.23-12.0 months). The average treatment time is 1.14 +/- 0.57 months (0.33-4.0 months). The treatment outcomes show 109 ears get excellent results, 27 ears good results and 5 ears poor results. For complications, there were 6 patients had localized skin rash and 5 had skin lesion which were cured after 3-5 days. Nine patients had different degree of recurrence. The treatment age less than 6 weeks had a better results than treatment age old than 6 weeks (chi(2) = 4.48, p < 0.05). Except 5 poor results patients, the treatment efficiency is 96.4% (136/141) in this study. Conclusions: The Earwell infant ear correction system is proven to be a simple, non-invasive, high-efficiency, low-cost treatment method, which is more effective than traditional plastic surgery, and treatment efficiency of different types ear deformities can reach more than 95% in China. It is important to ensure the early treatment during the first 6 weeks.
Contour first-retrospective study of an algorithmic approach of auricular keloids

Abstract:Background: Auricular keloids are difficult to treat, and recurrent keloids are more aggressive and more likely to develop aural deformities. Surgical excision, injections, or radiotherapy alone have high recurrence rates. An algorithmic approach of auricular keloid remains to be explored. Aims: To investigate the sequential treatment protocol for the treatment of auricle keloids to maintain auricle morphology and reduce the postoperative recurrence rate. Patients/methods: A retrospective analysis of 42 patients who attended the scar minimally invasive treatment center of the Hospital of Plastic Surgery, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for serial treatment from January 2019 to June 2021. According to the size and involvement of the keloid, the core excision of the scar was excised under the condition of ensuring the priority of the auricular contour, and the scar flap was repaired to reconstruct the auricular appearance, and electron beam treatment was performed within 24 h after the operation, ray energy: 6-7 MeV, dose: Dt18Gy/2f; regular trimethoprim combined with 5-Fu injection treatment and the application of silicone ear clips for local compression treatment were performed 1 month after the operation. Results: Thirty-five patients were followed up from 12 to 40 months after surgery, and three of them showed a tendency of recurrence, and early local treatment with trimethoprim and 5-Fu injection achieved favorable results. Conclusion: A standardized and sequential treatment plan for keloids with different morphology and anatomical locations can achieve remodeling of the auricular morphology and maintain long-term results.
Comparison of the treatment duration and nursing requirements of the EarWell infant ear correction system for different types of auricle deformities

Abstract:Abstract Objective To observe whether the EarWell infant ear correction system makes any difference in terms of the treatment effect, duration, complication rate, and nursing care requirements in different types of infant auricle deformities. Methods A total of 93 infant patients with auricular deformity (age: <3 months of age) who were diagnosed and treated in Guangzhou Children and Women’s Medical Center from April 2018 to September 2020 were selected and treated with the EarWell infant ear correction system. We observed and recorded the effects of the EarWell infant ear correction system, the treatment duration, the number of rebound cases, and complications that are likely to occur during treatment, and noted the related factors causing complications and the relative requirements for nursing care. Results The Earwell infant ear correction system could effectively correct infant auricle deformities. Among the 93 cases, 90 cases had positive therapeutical outcome and the effective rate was 96.77%. The treatment duration for lop ear and protruding ear was longer than for other auricle deformities; the deformity recoil and the treatment compilation rates were much higher for these 2 deformity types, and the difference was statistically significant ( P < 0.05). Conclusions The treatment suggestion for the wearing duration of the EarWell infant ear correction system for lop ear and protruding ear is a prolonged duration compared with that for other infant auricle deformities. Further, the requirements for nursing care intensity and infant patient’s guardian’s nursing knowledge and skill are obviously increased for these 2 types of auricle deformities.
Age and gender related changes in biomechanical properties of healthy human costal cartilage

Abstract:Background and aims: For repairing the ear malformation, it is recommended in China to use the over than 10-years-old rib cartilage. However, according to our clinical experience, a better post-operation effect can be found using about the 7-years-old cartilage for the operation. To shape a harvested costal cartilage and to perform it on the transplant site depend on the mechanical properties of the costal cartilage. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the age and gender-related biomechanical properties of the human costal cartilage. Methods: Human costal cartilages were harvested from 25 female and 45 male donors of 5-25 years old after auricular reconstructive surgery. The specimens were divided into six groups: children (5-10 years), adolescent (11-17 years) and adult (18-25 years), respectively, in males and females. Tensile strength, stress-strain relationship, stress relaxation and creep were tested by using a material testing machine. Findings: The biomechanical properties of costal cartilage are donor age and gender related. The children group has the highest tensile strengths (P<0.01) in both male and female groups. The male group relaxed and crept more than that of the female group in all three age groups (P<0.01). Interpretation: These findings provide a further support for the potential age acting on the human costal cartilage. The adolescent has the lowest strength, this could be a reason that compared to using the children costal cartilage, the bigger distortion happened after using the adolescent costal cartilage in the auricular reconstruction operation.
Correction of congenital auricle deformities with ear mould: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of ear moulds for congenital auricle deformities.METHODS: Databases including Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM) and Web of Science were systematically reviewed. Randomised controlled trials (RCT), non-randomised control trials (non-RCT), quasi-randomised control trials (quasi-RCT) and self-controlled before-after trials were also included. Data extraction was independently conducted by two authors. The Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies of Interventions (ROBIN-I) was used to evaluate the risk bias. Heterogeneity was assessed using I<sup>2</sup> and chi-square tests. Effective rate, adverse reaction rate and their 95%CI were calculated. Funnel plots, Begg's test as well as sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed.RESULTS: The analysis encompassed ten studies, comprising one RCT and nine self-controlled before-after trials, involving 1860 ears (1248 children). The pooled effective rate and adverse reaction rate of ear mould were 91% (95% CI: 0.87-0.94) and 9% (95%CI: 0.02-0.17), respectively. No serious adverse reactions were reported. The effective rate of ear mould intervention showed no significant difference between age at correction≤42 days group (90%, 95%CI: 0.85-0.94) and that >42 days group (93%, 95%CI: 0.83-0.99). Similarly, there was no statistical difference in the correction efficiency between duration of wearing ear mould≤30 days group (90%, 95%CI: 0.85-0.94) and that >30 days group (92%, 95%CI: 0.86-0.96). The effective rate for correcting cryptotia ear (98%, P < 0.001), cup ear (93%, P = 0.004) and prominent ear (90%, P = 0.014) was higher than that of helical rim deformity (66%).CONCLUSIONS: In the short term, the use of ear moulds is effective and safe in correcting congenital auricle deformities. Notably, the correction efficacy for cryptotia, cup ear and prominent ear deformities surpasses that of helical rim deformities. However, further research is required to ascertain the impact of the duration of wearing on the correction of congenital auricle deformities.

Large-scale graphene transistors with enhanced performance and reliability based on interface engineering by phenylsilane self-assembled monolayers.

Abstract:In this letter, we report the dielectric/graphene interface physics and engineering of large-scale, chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene transistors by self-assembling a molecular-scale organosilane monolayer onto the dielectric surface. We show that phenyl-alkyl-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAM) at the dielectric/graphene interface consistently improve the graphene device performance and reliability. The extrinsic field-effect mobility of large-scale CVD graphene transistors on the phenyl-SAM engineered dielectric is currently up to 2500 cm(2)/(V s) at room temperature, considerably higher than the counterparts without the SAM. In addition, significant reduction on the bias stress instability and hysteresis is achieved by the SAM-based interface engineering. Further analysis reveals that charge injection from graphene to the dielectric/graphene interface dominates the observed hysteresis behavior. For both graphene transistors with and without SAMs, the bias stress stability, that is, Dirac point shift under bias stress, is well described by the stretched exponential model with its fitting parameters clearly indicating different interface properties.
Timing Ear Reconstruction by Biomechanical Properties of the Rib Cartilage: Is Childhood

Abstract:cartilage tissue, so 8 to 10 years is the ideal age. At the same time, Qi keming et al. had conducted a study that included 1057 different-age, normal Chinese people through measuring their auricular size to demonstrate that in children of school age and younger, the auricle is 0.9 cm smaller than in adults. Therefore, they pointed out that the operation should be performed after 13 years of age. The results of this study show that the tensile strength in the group consisting of children was significantly higher than that in the adolescent and adult groups in both male and female groups. This could be because of the different collagen structure that exists in children. The stress and strain test and the creep and stress relaxation test show that the group of children had cartilage that was the most flexible and the most resistant to deformation. This phenomenon could be explained by cartilage calcification and ossification, which increased the stiffness in the adult groups. The calcification and the stiffness of cartilage increase with age; thus, cartilage is not suitable for use as a frame material for auricular reconstruction after the age of 29 years. In summary, integrating psychological, physiologic, and biomechanical properties, our results indicate that auricular reconstruction surgery using costal cartilage should be performed during childhood to take advantage of the best biomechanical properties. inflammation. Potential complications of surgery include problems with wound healing and recurrence. 5 This tends to be uncommon with good control of the dermatomyositis before undertaking surgery; use of low doses of corticosteroids to minimize dis-ruption to wound healing; and minimization of surgical trauma, avoiding healing by secondary intention. In conclusion, surgical resection with attention to detail with concomitant specific medical therapy is recommended for treatment of gluteal calcinosis in juvenile dermatomyositis.
