Abstract:Background: Football (soccer) betting, as a strategic form of betting, became one of the favorite wagers for pathological gamblers. Previous studies demonstrated the psychological and biological significance of the ‘illusion of control’ (personal control) and ‘near miss’ results in gambling. In our study, we explored whether knowledge and expertise of pathological sports gamblers can ensure a successful bet. Sample and Methods: Participants were divided into three groups of individuals – pathological gamblers, amateurs and laypersons – and were asked to predict in advance the general result and the exact result of football matches in the European Champions League Round of 16. Results: The 165 participants included 53 pathological sports gamblers (52 males and 1 female), 78 laypersons (45 females and 33 males) and 34 amateurs (all males). After a thorough statistical analysis, we found no significant differences between the groups, no matter what kind of previous knowledge they had acquired. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the ‘illusion of control’ of pathological gamblers, attained by knowledge of the game and its latest data and information (especially in a strategic gamble as football betting), has no factual background. Moreover, our study demonstrates without a doubt that there is no significant difference between the male pathological sports gamblers group and the male/female laypersons group.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Disrupted circadian rhythms is associated with impaired cognitive function. Although circadian rhythm disturbances are commonly seen in individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), whether their cognitive functioning is thus affected remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the associations of circadian-related parameters with different cognitive abilities in children with ADHD. Methods Fifty-seven children with ADHD were recruited into this study (age range: 6–12 years, 66.7% male). They were assessed by parent-report questionnaires on sleep problems (Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire, CSHQ), and ADHD symptoms (Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behaviour Scale). Actigraphic data collected for seven consecutive days were analyzed using parametric and nonparametric methods. Cognitive functioning was assessed with Continuous Performance Test (CPT) for sustained attention, Letter-digit test for processing speed, Digit Span test and N-back task for working memory, Tower of London test for planning skills and Bergs Card Sorting Test for set-shifting ability. The relationship between circadian parameters and cognitive performance was analyzed using multiple regression while controlling for age, sex, ADHD medication, the day of cognitive assessment (school days vs non-school days), total sleep time, and CSHQ total score. Results Increased activity during the most active 10-h period of the day (St. β = 0.39, p = 0.012) was related to more omission errors on CPT, and later onset of the least active 5-h period of the day (St. β = 0.44, p = 0.004) was associated with longer correct reaction time on CPT. Lower relative amplitude was associated with poorer performance on Digit Span (St. β = 0.33, p = 0.042). No significant associations were found between the circadian-related parameters and the performance on other tasks measuring processing speed and executive functions. Conclusion Circadian rest-activity rhythms (blunted rest-activity rhythms, higher daytime activity, and later onset of nocturnal rest) were associated with cognitive functioning in ADHD children. Future longitudinal studies are needed to explore the long-term impact of circadian rhythm disturbances and the effects of circadian-focused intervention on cognitive functioning in ADHD children. Abstract:The presence of coexisting subclinical epileptogenic discharges (SED) has led to a deleterious effect on cognitive process of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children but not on the severity. Brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is reduced in ADHD children than that in controls. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with and without subclinical epileptogenic discharges (SED) have been suggested to negatively affect cognitive abilities of children with ADHD. The role of brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its precursor proBDNF in ADHD is in need of being investigated. The aims were to evaluate the levels of serum BDNF, proBDNF and the proBDNF/BDNF ratio in addition to the potential impacts of SED on the children's cognitive abilities and the severity of ADHD. The included participants with ADHD were 30 children with normal electroencephalogram (EEG) (G1) and 30 children with SED (G2), together with 30 healthy children (G3). The cognitive abilities and severity of the disorder were evaluated. The biochemical measures were determined by ELISA. The presence of coexisting SED and nocturnal enuresis has led to a deleterious effect on cognitive processes but not on the severity. The focal epileptogenic discharge was the most common among children in G2. The levels of BDNF in Groups 1 and 2 were less than those in G3. The higher proBDNF/BDNF ratio could be related to the low BDNF levels rather than high proBDNF levels. The findings of this study highlight the importance of investigating the presence of SED and nocturnal enuresis in children with ADHD. Targeting strengthening of cognitive abilities in children with coexisting ADHD and SED is advised. The role of proBDNF in the pathophysiology of ADHD needs further investigation.

Results Later acrophase was significantly associated with higher scores on SDQ emotional problems (St. β = 0.30, p = 0.03) and SWAN inattention subscale (St. β = 0.27, p = 0.043). Lower relative amplitude was associated with higher scores on SDQ hyperactivity symptoms (St. β = -0.29, p = 0.045) and SDQ total difficulties (St. β = -0.31, p = 0.036). Higher levels of mean activity level during the least active 5-h period (L5) were related to higher scores on SDQ peer problems (St. β = 0.38, p = 0.021), SDQ internalizing problems (St. β = 0.38, p = 0.020) and SDQ total difficulties (St. β = 0.33, p = 0.036). Later onset of L5 was associated with increased SDQ emotional problems (St. β = 0.26, p = 0.046). Conclusion Circadian rest-activity rhythm disturbances (delayed phase, blunted rest-activity rhythms, higher level of nocturnal activity, and later onset of nocturnal rest) were associated with poor psychosocial functioning in children with ADHD. Further longitudinal studies are needed to examine the effects of circadian disruption on psychosocial functioning in children with ADHD. Associations Between Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Behavioral and Cognitive Functions in Children With and Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract:Background: Sleep-related problems are highly prevalent comorbidities in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Objective: This study aimed to investigate the associations between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and behavioral and cognitive functions in children with and without ADHD. Methods: A total of 341 children were included (ADHD group: 155, control group: 186; age: 6-10 years). The participants' sleep-related symptoms were assessed using a parent-rated questionnaire, and they were categorized into low- and high-risk SDB groups based on their scores. Behavioral symptoms were assessed using the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), and cognitive sustained attention and inhibitory control were assessed using a computer-based continuous performance test. Results: In the ADHD group, the high-risk SDB children showed significantly higher scores than the low-risk SDB group in externalizing problems (F = 4.22; P = 0.042), including hyperactivity (F = 4.65; P = 0.033) and attention problems (F = 8.19; P = 0.005), but not internalizing problems. Meanwhile, in the control group, the high-risk SDB children showed significantly higher scores than the low-risk SDB group in internalizing problems (F = 9.89; P = 0.002), depression (F = 9.45; P = 0.002), and somatization (F = 7.83; P = 0.006), as well as in externalizing problems (F = 7.72; P = 0.006), including hyperactivity (F = 6.23; P = 0.013), aggression (F = 5.00; P = 0.027), and conduct problems (F = 6.79; P = 0.010). Contrary to the behavioral outcomes, none of the attention performance subscale scores showed significant differences between the high- and low-risk SDB groups in either the ADHD or control group. Conclusions: The present findings suggest that SDB is associated with behavioral problems in children with ADHD and controls, with stronger associations in control children. On the contrary, SDB has no association with cognitive attention performance. This study extends our understanding of the associations of SDB with behavioral symptoms and cognitive functions in children.

Abstract:Clinical EEG and Neuroscience, Ahead of Print. Objectives. This study aimed to explore parent-reported symptoms of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) theta/beta ratio (TBR) characteristics in children with sleep disordered breathing (SDB). Methods. The parents of children (aged 6-11 years) with SDB (n = 103) and healthy controls (n = 28) completed the SNAP-IV questionnaire, and children underwent overnight polysomnography. Children with SDB were grouped according to obstructive apnea/hypopnea index: primary snoring, mild, and moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) groups. The TBR in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) periods in three sleep cycles was analyzed. Results. Children with SDB showed worse ADHD symptoms compared with the healthy control. There was no intergroup difference in TBR. The time-related decline in TBR observed in the control, primary snoring and mild OSA groups, which was not observed in the moderate-severe OSA group. Overnight transcutaneous oxygen saturation was negatively associated with the hyperactivity/impulsivity score of ADHD symptom. The global TBR during the NREM period in the first sleep cycle was positively correlated with inattention score. Conclusion. Children with SDB showed more ADHD inattention symptoms than the healthy control. Although we found no difference in TBR among groups, we found significant main effect for NREM period. There existed a relationship between hypoxia, TBR, and scores of ADHD symptoms. Hence, it was speculated that TBR can reflect the nocturnal electrophysiological manifestations in children with SDB, which may be related to daytime ADHD symptoms.

Abstract:Sleep disturbances (SD) are commonly reported concerns among parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While it is widely acknowledged that SD can worsen various aspects of children and adolescents' well-being (e.g., academic performance and emotional/behavioral state), a comprehensive clinical characterization of ADHD and SD is currently lacking. To address this gap, 136 children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD (aged 6 to 14 years) were retrospectively selected by reviewing electronic health records of hundreds of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders referred to the children's hospital. Participants were divided into two groups based on the presence of SD, assessed via a parent-report questionnaire (94 ADHD without SD and 42 ADHD with SD). Standardized measures of adaptive behavior, academic performance, ADHD-related and emotional/behavioral symptoms were collected. Results documented that the group of ADHD with SD obtained worse scores in specific aspects of adaptive behavior (conceptual and practical domains), academic performance (text comprehension, writing), ADHD symptoms (inattention) and emotional/behavioral difficulties (especially, mood/emotional regulation and stress) compared to those with ADHD without SD. In addition, our results established a relationship between sleep problems and diverse clinical aspects of children and adolescents with ADHD, while controlling for age, cognitive level, gender, ADHD symptoms severity, and Body Mass Index. From a clinical perspective, our study suggests that the presence of SD in patients with ADHD may serve as an indicator for strengths and weaknesses in this population, even demonstrating an independent relationship with specific clinical dimensions. Implications to improve clinical diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are discussed.

Abstract:Background: Adolescents vary considerably in their circadian phase preference; those with greater "eveningness" (also known as "night owls") have later bedtimes, wake times, and peak arousal compared to those with greater "morningness." Prior research suggests that (a) greater eveningness is associated with worse academic, executive, and attentional functioning; and (b) adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tend to be high in eveningness and to have deficits in these school-related constructs. However, few studies have examined circadian preference alongside two potential confounds-sleep duration and sleep quality-as predictors of daytime functioning, or whether the strength of associations differs across adolescents with and without ADHD. Methods: Participants were 302 adolescents (Mage = 13.17 years; 44.7% female; 81.8% White); approximately half (52%) had ADHD. A multi-method, multi-informant design was used. Specifically, adolescents reported on their circadian preference, school night sleep duration, and sleep quality. Adolescents provided ratings of their academic motivation (intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation) and were administered standardized achievement tests in reading and math. Adolescents and parents completed ratings of daily life executive functioning (behavioral, emotion, and cognitive regulation), and they and teachers also provided ratings of ADHD inattentive symptoms. Results: Above and beyond sleep duration, sleep quality, and covariates (sex, family income, pubertal development, medication use), greater eveningness was uniquely associated with poorer academic, executive, and attentional functioning across most measures. Sleep quality was uniquely associated with a handful of outcomes, and sleep duration was not significantly uniquely associated with any outcome in the regression analyses. ADHD status did not moderate effects. Conclusions: This study provides compelling evidence that poorer academic, executive, and attentional functioning are more closely associated with greater eveningness than with sleep duration or quality in adolescents. Findings suggest that targeting circadian preference may be important to reduce these problems in adolescents, especially in clinical samples such as ADHD for whom academic, executive, and attentional difficulties are exceptionally common.

Abstract:Reports of sleep disturbances in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common in both children and adults; however, the aetiology of such disturbances is poorly understood. One potentially important mechanism which may be implicated in disrupted sleep in ADHD is the circadian clock, a known key regulator of the sleep/wake cycle. In this systematic review, we analyse the evidence for circadian rhythm changes associated with ADHD, as well as assessing evidence for therapeutic approaches involving the circadian clock in ADHD. We identify 62 relevant studies involving a total of 4462 ADHD patients. We find consistent evidence indicating that ADHD is associated with more eveningness/later chronotype and with phase delay of circadian phase markers such as dim light melatonin onset and delayed sleep onset. We find that there is evidence that melatonin treatment may be efficacious in addressing ADHD-related sleep problems, although there are few studies to date addressing other chronotherapeutic approaches in ADHD. There are only a small number of genetic association studies which report linkages between polymorphisms in circadian clock genes and ADHD symptoms. In conclusion, we find that there is consistent evidence for circadian rhythm disruption in ADHD and that such disruption may present a therapeutic target that future ADHD research might concentrate explicitly on.

Abstract:This study examined associations between sleep problems and attentional and behavioral functioning in 137 children aged 7 to 13 years with anxiety disorders (n = 39), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 38), combined anxiety disorder and ADHD (n = 25), and 35 controls. Diagnoses were made using the semistructured diagnostic interview Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-age Children-Present and Lifetime Version. Sleep problems were assessed using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, attention was measured by the Attention Network Test, and behavioral problems were measured by teacher ratings on the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment, Teacher Report Form. Sleep problems were associated with reduced efficiency of the alerting attention system for all children and with increased internalizing problems in children with anxiety disorders.

Abstract:STUDY OBJECTIVES The current study aimed to examine the association of insomnia symptoms with daytime behavior and cognitive functioning in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS Thirty-six children with ADHD and insomnia symptoms, 27 children with ADHD without insomnia symptoms and 21 age-matched healthy controls were recruited in this study (age range: 6-12 years, 70% male). They were assessed by parent-report questionnaires on insomnia symptoms (Children's Sleep Habit Questionnaire) and ADHD symptoms (Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior Scale, SWAN), and completed a battery of cognitive tests including Continuous Performance Test (CPT) for sustained attention, Letter-digit test for processing speed, Digit Span forward test and N-back task for working memory, Tower of London (TOL) test for planning skills and Bergs Card Sorting Test (BCST) for set-shifting ability. RESULTS Children with ADHD and insomnia symptoms had the highest scores on SWAN total, and inattention and hyperactivity subscales, followed by children with ADHD without insomnia and healthy controls (all ps < 0.05). After controlling for potential confounders, children with ADHD and insomnia symptoms showed poorer performance on CPT and Letter-digit test as compared to children with ADHD without insomnia and healthy controls (all ps < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Insomnia symptoms are associated with more severe ADHD symptoms and cognitive impairments in children with ADHD, especially deficits on sustained attention and processing speed. Future longitudinal studies are needed to explore the long-term impacts of insomnia symptoms and the effects of sleep-focused intervention on cognitive functioning in children with ADHD.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often comorbid with sleep disturbances can produce profound disruption in daily life and impact negatively on quality of life of both the child and family. However, the temporal relationship between ADHD and sleep impairment is unclear, as are underlying common brain mechanisms.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>This study used data from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (n=1,601, 52% female) and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (n=3,515, 48% female). Longitudinal relationships between symptoms were examined using cross-lagged panel models. Gray matter volume (GMV) neural correlates were identified using linear regression. The transcriptomic signature of the identified brain-ADHD-sleep relationship was characterized by gene enrichment analysis. Confounding factors, such as stimulant drugs for ADHD and social economic status, were controlled for.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>ADHD symptoms contributed to sleep disturbances at one or more subsequent time-points in both cohorts. Lower GMVs were associated with both ADHD symptoms and sleep disturbances in the middle frontal gyrus and inferior frontal gyrus, amygdala, striatum, and insula. ADHD symptoms significantly mediated the link between these structural brain abnormalities and sleep dysregulation, and genes differentially expressed in the implicated brain regions, included those involved in neurotransmission and circadian entrainment.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>This study indicates that ADHD symptoms and sleep disturbances have common neural correlates, including structural changes of the ventral attention system and fronto-striatal circuitry. Leveraging data from large datasets, these results offer new mechanistic insights into this clinically important relationship between ADHD and sleep impairment, with potential implications for neurobiological models and future therapeutic directions.</p>

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The quality of communication between physician and patient is a major contributor to patient satisfaction and treatment adherence. Deaf patients who use American Sign Language experience significant communication barriers in most medical settings. This study investigated factors impacting deaf patients' satisfaction with prenatal care and prenatal care disparities between deaf and hearing women. METHODS Questionnaires modified from Omar and Schiffman's prenatal satisfaction measure were administered to 23 deaf and 32 hearing women. RESULTS Deaf women were less satisfied than hearing women with physician communication and less satisfied with overall care. Deaf women's expectations about provision of interpreter services being met or exceeded was significantly associated with overall satisfaction. Hearing women had more prenatal care appointments and reported receiving more information from their doctors. CONCLUSIONS Maximizing communication effectiveness with deaf patients results in better prenatal care and improved patient satisfaction. Good communication includes conveying concern and making efforts to ensure that whatever communication methods used are effective.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important outcome in dialysis care. Previous research has related protein-energy nutritional status to generic HRQOL domains, but it is still not clear as to how it relates to HRQOL domains that are unique to hemodialysis patients. Therefore, our aim was to study the relation between protein-energy nutritional status and kidney disease-specific HRQOL domains in hemodialysis patients. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. SETTING This study was performed at multiple centers. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS We evaluated the first 590 hemodialysis patients who had enrolled in the Convective Transport Study. DETERMINANTS We measured protein-energy nutritional status by using the Subjective Global Assessment, albumin, normalized nitrogen appearance, creatinine, body mass index, and cholesterol. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE HRQOL was assessed by using the Kidney Disease Quality Of Life-Short Form. RESULTS In all, 83% of the cohort was found to be well-nourished on the basis of the Subjective Global Assessment. Multiple nutritional parameters were positively related to the physical summary of generic HRQOL and to the following kidney disease-specific HRQOL scales: the effects of the kidney disease on daily life, the burden of the kidney disease, and overall health. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that, even in predominantly well-nourished hemodialysis patients, protein-energy nutritional status was significantly related to kidney disease-specific HRQOL.

Abstract:Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric condition that has been strongly associated with changes in sleep and circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are near 24-h cycles that are primarily generated by an endogenous circadian timekeeping system, encoded at the molecular level by a panel of clock genes. Stimulant and non-stimulant medication used in the management of ADHD has been shown to potentially impact on circadian processes and their behavioral outputs. In the current study, we have analyzed circadian rhythms in daily activity and sleep, and the circadian gene expression in a cohort of healthy controls (N = 22), ADHD participants not using ADHD-medication (N = 17), and participants with ADHD and current use of ADHD medication (N = 17). Rhythms of sleep/wake behavior were assessed via wrist-worn actigraphy, whilst rhythms of circadian gene expression were assessed ex-vivo in primary human-derived dermal fibroblast cultures. Behavioral data indicate that patients with ADHD using ADHD-medication have lower relative amplitudes of diurnal activity rhythms, lower sleep efficiency, more nocturnal activity but not more nocturnal wakenings than both controls and ADHD participants without medication. At the molecular level, there were alterations in the expression of PER2 and CRY1 between ADHD individuals with no medication compared to medicated ADHD patients or controls, whilst CLOCK expression was altered in patients with ADHD and current medication. Analysis of fibroblasts transfected with a BMAL1:luc reporter showed changes in the timing of the peak expression across the three groups. Taken together, these data support the contention that both ADHD and medication status impact on circadian processes.

Abstract:<i>Background</i>: Sleep problems and daytime sleepiness are common in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and are associated with poor parent-reported functional outcomes. However, the potential impact of sleep problems or daytime sleepiness on the school functioning of children with ADHD remains unknown. We aimed to determine if sleep problems and daytime sleepiness were associated with the social, emotional, and behavioral school-based functioning of children with ADHD and comorbid sleep problems. <i>Methods</i>: Children aged 5-13 years with ADHD and a moderate-severe sleep problem (confirmed using American Academy of Sleep Medicine diagnostic criteria) were recruited from 43 pediatric practices across Victoria and Queensland, Australia (<i>N = </i>257). Parent-rated sleep problems were assessed using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and teacher-rated daytime sleepiness using the Teacher's Daytime Sleepiness Questionnaire. Teacher-rated social, emotional, and behavioral school functioning was assessed using three scales (peer problems, emotional problems, and conduct problems) from the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlations and linear regression models. <i>Results</i>: Teacher-rated daytime sleepiness was associated with higher levels of emotional (β = 0.39; 95% CI = 0.25-0.52) and behavioral problems (β = 0.47; CI = 0.36-0.58) in adjusted models. While total sleep duration and parent-rated sleep problems were not associated with daytime sleepiness or school functioning, the CSHQ subscale <i>night wakings</i> was correlated with teacher-rated daytime sleepiness (<i>r </i>= 0.21; <i>p </i>< 0.01). <i>Conclusions</i>: Daytime sleepiness (possibly as an indicator of sleep quality) may be a better predictor of school functioning in children with ADHD who have concomitant sleep problems than total sleep duration or parent-rated sleep problems.

Abstract:The objective of the present review was to systematically examine associations between perturbations of the homeostatic or circadian sleep processes and the neurobehavioral functioning (NBF) of individuals with ADHD. Electronic databases were searched for articles published between December 2013 and March 2023. Studies were included if they used objective measures of NBF, used objective or subjective measures of sleep, and focused on individuals with ADHD. Ten studies met these inclusion criteria. Of these, eight studies found perturbations in the interplay between NBF and Process S or Process C, and three studies did not. The quality of the studies was degraded because they failed to address key factors that affect the sleep processes and by the presence of methodological weaknesses. Our review suggests that homeostatic and circadian sleep processes are associated with NBF in individuals with ADHD. However, to confirm the validity of this conclusion, future studies should examine or control for confounders and utilize experimental designs that allow causality to be inferred.
Sleep hygiene and actigraphically evaluated sleep characteristics in children with ADHD and chronic sleep onset insomnia

Abstract:In the present study we investigated sleep hygiene and actigraphically evaluated sleep in 74 medication-naïve children, aged 6-12 years, with rigorously diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and chronic sleep onset insomnia (ADHD-SOI) and 23 ADHD controls without insomnia (ADHD-noSOI). Between-group differences were analysed for lights out (sleep log), actigraphically evaluated sleep onset, sleep latency, total sleep duration, actual sleep time and sleep hygiene as measured with the Children's Sleep Hygiene Scale. We found a significant difference (P < 0.001) in mean (+/-SD) sleep onset between the ADHD-SOI group (21:49 +/- 0:56 h) and ADHD-noSOI groups (20:41 +/- 0:45 h). Sleep latency was significantly (P < 0.001) longer in ADHD-SOI (00:53 +/- 0:25 h) compared to ADHD-noSOI (00:26 +/- 0:25 h). The difference in total sleep duration between ADHD-SOI (9:42 +/- 0:44 h) and ADHD-noSOI (10:09 +/- 0:43 h) was not significantly different (P = 0.18). The group difference in actual sleep time was also not significant (8:43 +/- 0:52 h in ADHD-SOI versus 9:13 +/- 1:16 h; P = 0.40). There was no significant difference (P = 0.17) in mean (+/-SD) total sleep hygiene score between the ADHD-SOI (56.4 +/- 10.5) and ADHD-noSOI groups (53.0 +/- 10.6). We conclude that there were differences in sleep onset and sleep latency in ADHD children with chronic SOI and those without insomnia; however, sleep hygiene practices were similar and did not relate to sleep characteristics.
