Abstract:The insufficient water vapor barrier and mechanical capacity of sodium alginate (SA) film limited its application in fruit preservation. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used to stabilize Pickering emulsion. Then, we prepared SA composite films. Ginger essential oil (GEO) was loaded as antimicrobials and antioxidants. Finally, the application on mangos were investigated. Compared to coarse emulsion, Pickering emulsion and its film-formation-solution showed more stable system and larger droplet size. The emulsion significantly changed the properties of SA film. Specifically, CNCs improved the thermal, tensile, and barrier properties of the film and GEO enhanced the ultraviolet-visible light barrier capacity. Additionally, the SA/CNC film possessed a homogeneous micromorphology which had a sustained-release effect on GEO, thus maintaining high postharvest quality and long-term bioavailability for mangos. In conclusion, the film prepared via Pickering emulsion showed satisfactory properties which had great potential in fruit preservation.

Abstract:To mitigate food spoilage caused by microbial contamination and extend the shelf life of food, antibacterial and eco-friendly biological packaging materials as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics is encouraged. Herein, an innovative and green composite film with triple antibacterial activity has been fabricated by introducing prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) into chitosan (CS)-based films blended with gelatin (Gel) for the preservation of food, named CS/Gel/PB film. Due to the incorporation of PBNPs, CS/Gel/PB film exhibits enhanced mechanical, barrier and water resistance, and thermal abilities. The inherent bacterial trapping and killing capabilities of CS (contact killing), photothermal/photodynamic killing based on the excellent photothermal property of PBNPs under NIR irradiation synergistically facilitate the sterilization against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (antibacterial ratio = 99.99 %). The film exhibits outstanding preservation capability in product storage, significantly extending the shelf life of strawberry and pork to 15 and 7 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the cytotoxicity assessment of CS/Gel/PB against HepG2 cells ascertains a cell viability exceeding 96 %, indicating a negligible toxicity level. Additionally, this film also exhibits superior biodegradability (preliminary degradation on the 10th day and completion on the 40th day) compared with PE film. Overall, these properties demonstrate great potential of CS/Gel/PB film as a novel packaging material.
Nanoemulsion-integrated gelatin/bacterial cellulose nanofibril-based multifunctional film: Fabrication, characterization, and application

Abstract:The current requirements of food safety regulations and the environmental impact stemming from plastic packaging can only be addressed by developing suitable bio-nanocomposite films. Therefore, this study is dedicated to the fabrication of multifunctional film composed of gelatin, bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNF), and black pepper essential oil nanoemulsion (BPEONE) and application for duck meat preservation. BCNF was prepared through ultrasonication of cellulose derived from Komagataeibacter xylinus. BPEONE observed spherical morphology with a diameter ranging from 83.7 to 118 nm. A film matrix containing a higher gelatin proportion than BCNF was more effective in trapping BPEONE. However, increasing the BPEONE fraction showed more surface abrasion and voids in the film morphology. A flexible film with good interaction, crystallinity, and greater thermal stability (421 °C) was developed. Nevertheless, film hydrophobicity (118.89°) declined, resulting in a notable effect on water solubility, swelling, and water vapor permeability. Moreover, the film had improved antibacterial and antioxidant activities, coupled with controlled release characteristics. Consequently, the developed film effectively retarded the lipid oxidation, inhibited microbial growth, and extended the shelf life of duck meat at refrigeration (4 °C) by 3 days, and made the film a promising alternative in the realm of bio-active packaging technology.

Abstract:Antimicrobial food packaging with a sustained release of antimicrobial agents plays a key role in maintaining food quality and food safety. In this study, polyelectrolyte gellan gum (GG)-chitosan (CS) multilayer film was fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly technology with the incorporation of thyme essential oil (TEO) coarse emulsion (TEOC) or nanoemulsion (TEON). The microstructure of GG-CS three-layered film was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The red fluorescent signals in confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images indicated smaller droplets and more uniform distribution of TEON prepared by ultrasonic treatments, which was consistent with the particle size results and porous structure in SEM images. The film incorporated with 6% TEON exhibited higher antimicrobial activity than that with 6% TEOC, and it significantly reduced E. coli populations in liquid model system. Moreover, films incorporated with TEON showed improved mechanical flexibility (elongation at break) and UV blocking property in comparison to TEOC. This developed GGCS three-layered film loading with TEON was expected to be a potential antimicrobial material with sustained release property for food packaging applications.

Abstract:Food spoilage exacerbates global hunger and poverty, necessitating urgent advancements in food shelf life extension methodologies. However, balancing antibacterial efficacy for food preservation with human and environmental safety remains a significant challenge. Natural essential oils (EOs), known for their potent antibacterial and antioxidant properties, offer eco-friendly alternatives, yet their high volatility and instability limit practical applications. Herein, we conducted the encapsulation of EOs within biocompatible metal phenolic networks (MPNs) to create EOs@MPN nanocapsules. Subsequently, these nanocapsules were integrated into bio-nanocomposite films composed of natural soy protein isolate (SPI) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The resulting films exhibited robust mechanical properties (Tensile Strength >10 MPa) and significantly enhanced antioxidant activity (7-fold higher than pure films). Importantly, the synergistic combination of EOs and MPNs conferred enhanced antibacterial efficacy. Safety assessments confirmed the bio-nanocomposite films' high biodegradability (> 90 %) and negligible cytotoxicity, ensuring environmental sustainability and human health safety. In practical applications, the bio-nanocomposite films effectively delayed the surface browning of fresh-cut fruits for up to 48 h, demonstrating a pronounced synergistic antioxidative effect against oxidation. Moreover, tomatoes and blueberries packaged with the bio-nanocomposite films still maintained freshness for up to 12 days, offering promising strategies for extending the shelf life of perishable fruits. These findings underscore the potential of EOs@MPN-based bio-nanocomposite films as sustainable solutions for food preservation and highlight their practical viability in mitigating food spoilage and enhancing food security globally.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh)-peptide conjugates were produced by grafting CMCh with peptides from hemp seed, maize and casein. The nanoemulsions stabilized by these conjugates had smaller droplet size and better emulsifying properties. Nanoemulsions stabilized by conjugates were used to develop active films containing Camellia essential oil and the effect of conjugation on physicochemical properties of resulting films was evaluated. Water vapor and oxygen barrier properties, tensile strength, flexibility, and temperature of endothermic peak increased 6.6-19.8% and 6.9-27.2%, 40.1-96.6%, 61.4-83.3% and 7.8-18.5%, respectively when the CMCh-peptide conjugates were used to emulsify the essential oil. The conjugation helped to form compact structure. All of the films containing essential oil emulsions stabilized by conjugates showed the ability to extend the shelf-life of blueberry by maintaining the firmness, reducing the weight loss and slowing down the formation of soluble solids.

Abstract:An antibacterial nano-hydrogel (ginger essential oil nanoemulsion hydrogel, GEONH) based on Schiff base reaction was prepared using double-formaldehyde micro fibrillated cellulose (DAMFC) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) loaded with ginger essential oil nanoemulsion (GEON). It was found that when the mass ratio of DAMFC/CMCS/GEON was 1/9/270, the gel time, the water absorbency, gel strength, and morphology were the best. The results of X-ray diffraction and FT-IR confirmed that the aldehyde group on the DAMFC molecular chain formed a stable chemical crosslinking with the amino group on the CMCS molecular chain, resulting in a change in the crystal structure. GEONH showed excellent bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Simultaneously, the prepared GEONH decreased the total viable count, Malondialdehyde, and total sulfhydryl content and improved the taste in the storage of boiled salted duck. Therefore, GEONH film is a promising fresh-keeping packaging for storing meat products. Abstract:We conducted the statistical analysis of both initial symptoms and clinical symptoms and signs of different etiologies of chronic pancreatitis by using odds ratios which was one of the techniques of evidence-based medicine. The official report published by The Research Group of Intractable Pancreatic Diseases sponsored by the Welfare Ministry of Japan in 1986 was available as the data source of the present study. Nine items of initial symptoms and 25 items of 28 clinical symptoms and signs were compared in 4 different etiologies of the disease which were alcoholic, biliary, idiopatic and nonalcoholic (both biliary and idiopatic). In initial symptoms, 1.5 items were significantly more observed in alcoholic pancreatitis than in nonalcoholic, biliary and idioatic pancreatitis, 4 of which (abdominal pain, back pain, poor appetite and loss of body weight) were common items as might be related closely to the alcohol intake, 2. only one item of jaundice was significantly more observed in biliary pancreatitis than in alcoholic and idiopatic pancreatitis, 3.3 items of poor appetite, diarrhea and abdominal mass were more frequently observed in idiopatic pancreatitis than in biliary pancreatitis. In clinical symptoms and signs, 1. almost all items (21 to 24) were significantly more observed in alcoholic pancreatitis than in the other etiologies of the disease, and seemed to be related directly or indirectly to alcohol intake, 2.3 or 4 items which were related closely to gallstone and acute cholecystitis were significantly more observed in biliary pancreatitis than the other two etiologies of the disease, and 3.4 items consisting of diarrhea, loss of body weight, and pancreatic swelling were more frequently observed in idiopathic pancreatitis than in biliary pancreatitis.

Abstract:At present, food waste has become a serious issue and the use of petroleum-based food packaging films has resulted in a series of potential hazards. Therefore, more attention has been focused on the development of new food packaging materials. The polysaccharide-based composite film loaded with active substances considered to be an excellent preservative material. A novel packaging film based on sodium alginate and konjac glucomannan (SA-KGM) blended with tea polyphenols (TP) was prepared in the present study. The excellent microstructure of films was shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was indicated by FTIR spectra that the components could interact with each other through hydrogen bonds, which was also confirmed by molecular docking simulation. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties, barrier property, oxidation property, antibacterial activity, and stability of the structure of the TP-SA-KGM film were significantly improved. The AFM images and results of molecular docking simulation indicated that TP could affect the cell wall of bacteria by acting with peptidoglycan. Finally, the film showed excellent preservation effects in both beef and apples, which suggested that TP-SA-KGM film could be a novel bioactive packaging material with wide application potential in food preservation.

Abstract:Composite films based on chitosan (CS) incorporating Galla chinensis extract (GCNE) at different CS/GCNE weight ratios, which are both biodegradable and multifunctional, were fabricated using the solution-casting method. The FTIR analyses indicated that a good interaction was presented among the GCNE and CS through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The incorporation of the GCNE improved the films' elongation at break, UV-light blocking, and decreased the moisture regain (from 16.68% to 10.69%) and water absorption (from 80.65% to 54.74%). Moreover, the CS/GCNE films exhibited a strong antioxidant activity (from 57.11% to 70.37% of DPPH and from 35.53% to 46.73% of ABTS scavenging activities) mainly due to the high content of phenolic compounds in the incorporated GCNE. The CS/GCNE film-forming solution coatings demonstrated their effectiveness in preserving the quality of postharvest mangoes, specifically by minimizing the change in the firmness, weight loss, titratable acidity, and total phenolic and ascorbic acids. These findings suggest that the multifunctional composite films possess a high application potential to preserve postharvest fruits.

Abstract:New food packaging has shown research significance in the face of increasing demand for high-quality foods and growing attention paid to food safety. In this study, ginger essential oil microcapsule composite films were prepared by combining microcapsules prepared by a complex coacervation method with gelatin films, and the mechanical properties and active functions of the composite films were analyzed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the successful encapsulation of ginger essential oil. The scanning electron microscopy of the composite films showed the microcapsules and gelatin film matrix were highly compatible. During the entire storage period, the antioxidant capacity of the ginger essential oil microcapsule films weakened more slowly than ginger essential oil microcapsules and could be maintained at a relatively high level for a long time. The microcapsule films had excellent inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. Therefore, the direct addition of microcapsules to a film matrix can broaden the application range of microcapsules and increase the duration of the release of active ingredients. Ginger essential oil microcapsule films are potential biodegradable food packaging films with long-lasting activity.

Abstract:This study was aimed to investigate the properties of macromolecule chitosan composite film extracted from shrimp shells combined with ginger essential oil (GEO). Shrimp shells were employed to produce chitin. Their properties were measured as an effective food coating. The tensile strength decreased significantly with increased GEO concentrations compared to the control sample 31.12, 32.34, and 35.12 Map for both control and GEO concentrations of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the percentage of elongation increases with concentrations of GEO from 18.10 to 19.87% for each film 0.1 and 0.3%, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that GEO reduced the weight of chitosan-based film incorporating GEO loss at high levels of temperature. Composite films were characterized by their high ability scavenging hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. The findings of the current study showed that chitosan-based film incorporating GEO is a promising source for preparing bioactive films and that its use as anti-free radicals can be highly effective in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Abstract:This work aims to develop a biodegradable film with enhanced mechanical, water-barrier, and antimicrobial characteristics for the preservation of cherry tomatoes. Here, a persimmon pectin/ovalbumin (PN/OVA) stabilized-neem essential oil Pickering emulsion (NOPE) was added into the gelatin/sodium alginate-based blend matrix (GS). Even the biodegradability and transmittance of NOPE-rich film were decreased as compared to the control film, its flexibility, oxygen-barrier, and water-barrier performances significantly ( P < 0.05) increased by 45.23 %, 32.32 %, and 37.02 %, respectively. The NOPE-loaded films destroyed the hyphal structure and reduced spore germination of Botrytis cinerea through slow-releasing neem essential oil (NO), in turn inhibiting the growth of B. cinerea . Finally, the prepared films were applied for cherry tomato preservation. Compared with the control, 2.0 wt%-loaded GS films greatly reduced the weight loss and disease incidence of cherry tomatoes by 57.33 and 72.4 %, respectively, owing to their excellent water resistance and slow-released properties. Thus, the addition of 2.0 wt% NOPE into GS film is of particular interest in the design of active biodegradable packaging films for fruit preservation.

Abstract:Two bioactive molecules derived from citrus peel and garlic (pectin and carbon quantum dot), were used to develop pectin-based edible films for food packaging and coating applications. The interaction between pectin molecules and carbon quantum dots (CDs) resulted in a composite film (CDs/pectin) with improved antioxidant and antibacterial activity, as well as better mechanical properties. The changes brought about by the addition of CDs to the film and their suitability for food packaging were verified through fundamental characterization. The intrinsic fluorescence properties of CDs with pH sensitivity will be further investigated to explore their potential application in food quality detection. Besides, the use of active ingredients from food sources and excellent degradability suggest that the bio-nanocomposite film is a potential edible food packaging material. A formulation based on citrus peel and garlic was used for the surface coating of strawberries to extend their shelf life. The strawberries treated with the active coating did not show any significant signs of decay or dehydration after 5 days. This active packaging coating derived from food ingredients offers a promising natural alternative to conventional materials, with potential applications in extending food product shelf life, promoting human health, and detecting spoilage.

Abstract:This study reported the preparation of composite sodium alginate-gum Arabic films by incorporating nano emulsions and pickering emulsions loaded with mixed oregano and citronella essential oils. Nano emulsions and pickering emulsions were prepared with Tween 80 and whey protein isolate/inulin. The results of Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, thermo-gravimetric analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy demonstrated that sodium alginate-gum Arabic and the emulsion-loaded mixed oregano and citronella essential oils were biocompatible. The mixed oregano and citronella essential oils was enclosed in Pickering emulsions in the film samples, which also improved the mechanical and water barrier qualities, slowed the release of the active components. The composite film was applied to the storage experiment of goji berries at 25°C. In comparison to the control group, the composite film containing 0.4% Pickering emulsions significantly decreased weight loss and fruit deterioration while also extending shelf life by 3 days. In conclusion, produced Pickering emulsions laminate film loaded with mixed oregano and citronella essential oils may be a viable material for the food packaging sector.

Abstract:In this paper, amphiphilic chitosan and carboxymethyl modified gellan gum were synthesized to develop an active edible fresh-keeping material. The optimal weight ratio of CMCS-g-CA/CMGG was determined as 5:2 through the characterization of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical and barrier properties of the composite films. In addition, the water vapor permeability and oxygen permeability of CMCS-g-CA/CMGG composite films incorporated with mustard essential oil were all declined, and the antibacterial property of the composite film solutions against E. coli , S. aureus and Bacillus anthracis was distinctly improved with the increase of mustard essential oil (MEO) dosage. Furthermore, the CMCS-g-CA/CMGG + 2.0 μL/mL MEO composite film exhibited an effective preservation on mango fruits during 20 days of storage based on the characterization of surface appearance and quality indexes of fruits. Hence, the multifunctional CMCA-g-CA/CMGG/MEO composite films can be served as a prospective eco-friendly packaging material for fruit preservation.

Abstract:In this study, gelatin (GEL)/chitosan (CS)/green tea essential oil microcapsule (GTOM) films were prepared by casting to investigate their physicochemical properties and effectiveness in preserving fresh strawberries. GTOM at a maximum content of 30% (based on the total solid mass of GEL-CS) was also well dispersed in the CS and GEL matrix. The results showed that the incorporation of GTOM imparted excellent blocking properties of the films against UV–visible light (transparency and opacity at 600 nm of 35.47% and 7.47, respectively), decent mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 11.08 MPa), good antioxidant properties (60% scavenging activity against DPPH) and satisfactory safety (96.94%). After 7 d of storage at 25 °C, packed strawberries showed the water loss of GTOM-3 compared to polystyrene preservative films (PPF) was reduced to 31.2%, and the hardness was maintained at 3.01 N, showing excellent freshness retention and effectively reducing the loss of nutritional value of strawberries. In addition, the film exhibited good hydrophobicity and inherent biocompatibility, and these results indicate the remarkable potential of the new film for application, making it a promising high-performance preservation material.

Antimicrobial guar gum films optimized with Pickering emulsions of zein-gum arabic nanoparticle-stabilized composite essential oil for food preservation

Abstract:In this study, composite essential oil Pickering emulsion stabilized with zein-gum arabic (GA) nanoparticles (ZGCEO) was prepared to improve the characteristics of guar gum (GG) films. ZGCEO exhibited commendable stability and compatibility with GG, while leading to a noticeable improvement in the light barrier (from 3.98 A mm-1 to 17.09 A mm-1) and water vapor barrier characteristics of GG films, concomitantly mitigating their hydrophilic nature, with decreasing moisture content (from 17.70 % to 10.50 %), water solubility (from 84.41 % to 71.79 %), water vapor permeability (from 5.64 × 10-11 g (m s Pa)-1 to 4.97 × 10-11 g (m s Pa)-1), and an increasing water contact angle (from 69.8° to 94.2°). The addition of 2 % ZGCEO yielded a notable increase in the tensile strength of the GG-ZGCEO films, but the elongation at break decreased with increasing ZGCEO concentration. Moreover, the incorporated ZGCEO demonstrated outstanding antioxidant and antimicrobial characteristics, featuring a slow-release behavior of essential oil. The GG-ZGCEO coating also showed an excellent preservation effect in pork and "Huangguan" pears during storage. Collectively, we substantiated the efficacy of ZGCEO in augmenting the functional attributes of GG films, thereby establishing their potential utility as antimicrobial packaging materials conducive to food preservation.
