Abstract:Mercury (Hg), and its organic forms, are some of the most hazardous elements, with strong toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation in marine organisms. Hg accumulation in continuous trophic levels (TL) in marine food chains remains unclear. In this study, individual invertebrate and fish samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary adjacent sea were grouped into continuous TL ranges, and the bioaccumulations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed. The trophic magnification factor in invertebrates and fish was 1.40 and 1.72 for THg, and 2.56 and 2.17 for MeHg, indicating that both THg and MeHg were significantly biomagnified with increasing TL in both invertebrates and fish through trophic transfer. To evaluate the health risk of seafood consumption, the target hazard quotient (THQ) was calculated. Increasing THQ values indicated that the health risks of invertebrate and fish consumption in humans, especially children, were both elevated with increasing TL. THQ values > 1 indicated that consumption of invertebrates at a TL above 4.0 and fish above 4.5 may pose a relatively higher risk for children. Therefore, the consumption of both individual invertebrates and fish at high trophic positions may present greater health risk, especially in young children.
Mercury Stable Isotopes Reveal Influence of Foraging Depth on Mercury Concentrations and Growth in Pacific Bluefin Tuna

Abstract:Pelagic ecosystems are changing due to environmental and anthropogenic forces, with uncertain consequences for the ocean's top predators. Epipelagic and mesopelagic prey resources differ in quality and quantity, but their relative contribution to predator diets has been difficult to track. We measured mercury (Hg) stable isotopes in young (<2 years old) Pacific bluefin tuna (PBFT) and their prey species to explore the influence of foraging depth on growth and methylmercury (MeHg) exposure. PBFT total Hg (THg) in muscle ranged from 0.61 to 1.93 μg g-1 dw (1.31 μg g-1 dw ±0.37 SD; 99% ± 6% MeHg) and prey ranged from 0.01 to 1.76 μg g-1 dw (0.13 μg g-1 dw ±0.19 SD; 85% ± 18% MeHg). A systematic decrease in prey δ202Hg and Δ199Hg with increasing depth of occurrence and discrete isotopic signatures of epipelagic prey (δ202Hg: 0.74 to 1.49‰; Δ199Hg: 1.76-2.96‰) and mesopelagic prey (δ202Hg: 0.09 to 0.90‰; Δ199Hg: 0.62-1.95‰) allowed the use of Hg isotopes to track PBFT foraging depth. An isotopic mixing model was used to estimate the dietary proportion of mesopelagic prey in PBFT, which ranged from 17% to 55%. Increased mesopelagic foraging was significantly correlated with slower growth and higher MeHg concentrations in PBFT. The slower observed growth rates suggest that prey availability and quality could reduce the production of PBFT biomass.

Abstract:Research on food web structures in marine ecosystems is an important field in ecology where the interaction of structure and function contributes to understanding biodiversity. The coastal waters of Jiangsu are one of the important fishing bases in China. In recent years, with the development of industry in the coastal waters of Jiangsu, heavy metal (HM) pollution in this region has become more serious. In this study, all samples (including macroalgae, bivalves, cephalopods, gastropods, crustaceans and fish) were collected in the coastal waters of Jiangsu in spring, summer and autumn. Based on the construction of the food web structure using carbon and nitrogen isotope technology, the main methods of material circulation and energy flow were quantified, and the accumulation regularity and seasonal variation characteristics of HMs in the food web were analysed. The results showed that (1) among all the trophic groups, bivalves had the highest enrichment level of HMs, while fish had the lowest. However, fish have a strong ability to enrich Hg, and the main source of Hg enrichment in the human body is edible fish, so more attention should be given to Hg concentrations in fish. (2) In spring, the mean HM concentrations of marine organisms in the coastal waters of Jiangsu were Zn > Cu > As > Cd > Cr > Pb > Ni > Hg, and they were Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Cd > Ni > Cr > Hg in summer and Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Cd > Cr > Ni > Hg in autumn. In total, the concentrations of Zn, Cu and As were the highest, while the mean concentration of Hg in organisms was the lowest. (3) No significant biomagnification of HMs was found in the three seasons. We speculated that overfishing leads to miniaturization and a younger age of organisms, which makes the concentration of highly enriched HMs in organisms with high trophic levels (TLs) lower.

Abstract:Increasing evidence has suggested that climate variability has a vital impact on the stock fluctuation of many small pelagic fishes by regulating their recruitment. However, most recruitment-related studies have focused on large spawning/nursing grounds at annual or seasonal scales, while few have considered the impact of short-term environmental variations during the vulnerable passive-transport period. In this study, a larval growth index based on a Lagrangian particle-tracking model coupled with a hydrodynamic model that focused on the early growth and passive transport of the SPF was developed to identify the key spawning/nursing period and grounds accommodating fish recruitment. Taking Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) in the Yellow Sea as an example, the key spawning grounds and time for its recruitment was identified and the impact of sea-surface temperature (SST) and climate variability on its recruitment was then investigated and discussed. Significant positive (negative) correlations were identified between the recruitment index and the mean growth index (mean water temperature) along the tracking path of eggs or larvae released in the Bohai Sea and the southwestern Yellow Sea during July (1987–2004), implying that these were the key spawning grounds and period for recruitment success. The multi-year tracking path of released particles indicated that both the southwestern Yellow Sea and the central Bohai Sea may be the key nursing grounds. Meanwhile, the SST in July was found to be associated with basin-scale atmosphere–ocean interactions. A potential "atmosphere–ocean-recruitment" influence pattern for Japanese anchovy in the Yellow and Bohai Seas was thus proposed, in which higher (lower) temperature during the key spawning/nursing period induced by atmospheric variation might diminish (promote) recruitment success by limiting the growth and survival of anchovy larvae. The larval growth index developed in this study can be widely applied to other small pelagic fishes in other waters and provide implications for climate-induced recruitment studies.

Abstract:We studied δ 13 C, δ 15 N and δ 18 O values, and total mercury (THg) concentrations in muscle samples from deep-sea predators – five beaked whale species and sperm whales – stranded along the coast of Hokkaido, in the north of Japan in 2010 and 2019. The δ 13 C, δ 15 N and δ 18 O values, THg concentrations, and body length (BL) of Stejneger's beaked whales were similar to those of Hubbs' beaked whales, which belong to the same genus. In contrast, δ 13 C values, THg concentrations, and BL of Sato's beaked whales were markedly different from those of Baird's beaked whales, which belong to the same genus. Stejneger's and Hubbs' beaked whales living around Hokkaido may compete in their ecological niches, whereas Sato's and Baird's beaked whales may segregate their ecological niches. Although Cuvier's beaked whales and sperm whales belong to different genera and their BLs were significantly different, their δ 13 C and δ 15 N values were similar, probably because they can dive and stay in deeper waters than other beaked whale species. The δ 13 C values in combined samples from all whales increased with increasing BL, probably owing to the larger whale species' dietary preference for squid. The δ 13 C values in combined samples from all whales were positively correlated with THg concentrations, whereas the δ 15 N values in the combined samples were negatively correlated. The δ 18 O values in combined samples from most whales tended to be positively correlated with THg concentrations. These correlations may be explained by a higher THg load from deep-sea feeding than from pelagic feeding and by a feeding shift towards lower trophic levels.

Mercury isotope compositions in seawater and marine fish revealed the sources and processes of mercury in the food web within differing marine compartments

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities and climate change have significantly increased mercury (Hg) levels in seawater. However, the processes and sources of Hg in differing marine compartments (e.g. estuary, marine continental shelf (MCS) or pelagic area) have not been well studied, which makes it difficult to understand Hg cycling in marine ecosystems. To address this issue, the total Hg (THg) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and stable Hg isotopes were determined in seawater and fish samples collected from differing marine compartments of the South China Sea (SCS). The results showed that the estuarine seawater exhibited substantially higher THg and MeHg concentrations than those in the MCS and pelagic seawater. Significantly negative δ202Hg (-1.63‰ ± 0.42‰) in estuarine seawater compared with that in pelagic seawater (-0.58‰ ± 0.08‰) may suggest watershed input and domestic sewage discharge of Hg in the estuarine compartment. The Δ199Hg value in estuarine fish (0.39‰ ± 0.35‰) was obviously lower than that in MCS (1.10‰ ± 0.54‰) and pelagic fish (1.15‰ ± 0.46‰), which showed that relatively little MeHg photodegradation occurred in the estuarine compartment. The Hg isotope binary mixing model based on Δ200Hg revealed that approximately 74% MeHg in pelagic fish is derived from atmospheric Hg(II) deposition, and over 60% MeHg in MCS fish is derived from sediments. MeHg sources for estuarine fish may be highly complex (e.g. sediment or riverine/atmospheric input) and further investigations are warranted to clarify the contribution of each source. Our study showed that Hg stable isotopes in seawater and marine fish can be used to identify the processes and sources of Hg in different marine compartments. This finding is of great relevance to the development of marine Hg food web models and the management of Hg in fish.

Abstract:The distribution and fluctuations in abundance of small pelagic species such as anchovy are largely affected by climate change. We hypothesized that the future projected rise in temperature will result to a northward shift of Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) habitat and a subsequent increase in relative abundance. To test this hypothesis, we explored the link between Japanese anchovy abundance and environmental conditions using machine-learning and statistical models. The models were fitted with catch per unit effort (CPUE) as the response variable and remotely sensed data of sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), assimilated information of sea surface salinity (SSS), meridional and zonal ocean currents, and depth as environmental covariates. Our results showed that the abundance of E. japonicus was significantly influenced by environmental factors. In particular, salinity front and SST highlight strong relationships with winter CPUE distribution. Based on these models, the results reinforced our hypothesis and showed that the warming ocean will drive a substantial shift in Japanese anchovy habitat in the China seas. SST and CPUE showed negative correlations with the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index. These findings underpin ramifications of the climate-driven habitat shift of small pelagic fish species on the regional marine ecosystem in the China seas.

Abstract:In this study, we collected 56 species of fishery organisms (including fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, gastropods, and bivalves) from four seasonal survey cruises at the Dachen fishery grounds. We measured the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, and Hg) in these fisheries organisms. We determined their trophic levels using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope techniques. We analyzed the characteristics of heavy metal transfer in the food chain. The results showed significant differences in heavy metal concentrations among different species. Among all biological groups, bivalves and gastropods exhibited higher levels of heavy metal enrichment than other biological groups, while fish had the lowest levels of heavy metal enrichment. Heavy metals exhibited different patterns of nutritional transfer in the food chain. While Hg showed a biomagnification phenomenon in the food chain, it was not significant. Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, and As exhibited a trend of biodilution with increasing nutritional levels, except for As, which showed no significant correlation with δ 15 N.

Abstract:In this study, the concentrations of Cd and Hg were measured in muscle of juvenile individuals at an importan fishing ground in southeastern Gulf of California to assess the health risk to human consumers considering elemental levels and rate of shark consumption in NW Mexico. Twenty-eight individuals were sampled in September 2019. Quantification of Hg was made by cold vapor-atomic absorption spectrophotometry, analyses of Cd were made by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In general, average Hg (1.27 μg g −1 dry weight) concentrations were higher than Cd (0.059). In comparison to results of Cd and Hg in muscle of several species of genus Rhizoprionodon sp., our reported concentrations were comparable. Maximum permissible limits (Cd 0.5 and Hg 0.5 μg g −1 wet weight) in fish products for human consumption were not exceeded. Health risk assessment to shark consumers indicated that Hg is of more concern than Cd but no hazards exist.

Abstract:The taxonomic status of 24 haemolytic, non-glucose acidifying Acinetobacter strains that did not belong to any previously described species was investigated by means of a polyphasic approach. Using AFLP fingerprinting, amplified rDNA restriction analysis and phenotypic characterization, the strains were classified into two phenetically coherent groups (comprising 15 and 9 strains) that were distinct from each other and from all known Acinetobacter species. Confirmation that these groups formed two separate lineages within the genus Acinetobacter was obtained from comparative analysis of partial sequences of the gene encoding the beta-subunit of RNA polymerase in all strains and also from 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of representative strains. Previously published DNA-DNA reassociation data for some of the strains used also supported the species rank for both groups, for which the names Acinetobacter beijerinckii sp. nov. and Acinetobacter gyllenbergii sp. nov. are proposed. The strains of A. beijerinckii sp. nov. originated from human and animal specimens and from various environmental sources, whereas those of A. gyllenbergii sp. nov. were isolated exclusively from human clinical specimens. The phenotypic characteristics most useful for the differentiation of these species from other Acinetobacter species that comprise haemolytic strains were the inability of A. beijerinckii sp. nov. to grow on l-arginine and the ability of A. gyllenbergii sp. nov. to grow on azelate. The type strain of A. beijerinckii sp. nov. is NIPH 838T (=LUH 4759T=CCUG 51249T=CCM 7266T=58aT) and the type strain of A. gyllenbergii sp. nov. is NIPH 2150T (=RUH 422T=CCUG 51248T=CCM 7267T=1271T).

Abstract:Changes in the biogeochemical cycling of mercury (Hg) and Hg species were investigated in a typical marine aquaculture area located at Zhoushan island, Zhejiang province, east China. Mercury species were analyzed in different environmental samples collected during a field survey and a simulation batch experiment. The field work comprised both summer and winter collection of water and sediment samples from marine aquaculture sites (MAS) in a field survey and from corresponding reference sites (CRS) located 2500 m from the MAS. THg concentrations in water were 91.3 +/- 70.3 and 115 +/- 22.6 pmol L-1 in summer and winter, respectively. Particulate Hg accounting for (>)60% of THg and positively correlated with total suspended solid content in water. Dissolved organic carbon in water was positively correlated with dissolved Hg. Significantly higher (p < 0.001, F = 102) total methylmercury (TMeHg) contents were observed in MAS (0.31 +/- 0.26 ng g(-1)) than in CRS (0.06 +/- 0.03 ng g(-1)) in the sediment solid phase. Moreover. MeHg formation rate in MAS was clearly higher than in CRS in the simulation experiment. Both the field survey and the simulation experiment highlighted the readier formation of MeHg in MAS than in CRS. TMeHg levels in blackhead seabream (Acanihopagnis schlegelii), red snapper (Lutfanas campechanas) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) were only 52.7 = 5.74, 23.7 = 2.51 and 24.3 +/- 3.86 ng g(-1), values significantly lower than the safety guideline (1000 ng g(-1)) established by the World Health Organization. Methylmercury Bioaccumulation in Deepest Ocean Fauna: Implications for Ocean Mercury Biotransport Through Food Webs

Abstract:For many contaminants, the hadal zone (from 6000 to 11000 m depth) is potentially the least explored environment. In this work, we reveal the bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin that can be substantially bioaccumulated within marine food webs, in amphipod fauna from the Mariana, Massau, and New Britain trenches. We identified high levels of mercury (Hg) and MeHg ranging in wet weight from 47 to 435 ng/g and from 3.8 to 61 ng/g, respectively, in amphipods from these trenches. Placing the MeHg level into a broader comparative context with previous values, we found that the MeHg level in this study is significantly higher than that from many other aquatic environments around the world. High MeHg levels are largely dependent on food availability, which is probably related to surface ocean production, terrestrial input, and MeHg bioaccumulation in marine food webs. Comparisons of the distribution and variation trends of MeHg levels based on fatty acid, radiocarbon (Delta C-14), and stable carbon isotope (delta C-13) analyses supported our hypothesis. Our study suggests that anthropogenic Hg inputs into surface oceans could be rapidly transported to the world's deepest oceans through marine food webs and highlights that hadal trenches are not biological deserts.

Abstract:To elucidate the potential risks of the toxic pollutant mercury (Hg) in polar waters, the study of accumulated Hg in fish is compelling for understanding the cycling and fate of Hg on a regional scale in Antarctica . Herein, the Hg isotopic compositions of Antarctic cod Notothenia coriiceps were assessed in skeletal muscle, liver, and heart tissues to distinguish the differences in Hg accumulation in isolated coastal environments of the eastern (Chinese Zhongshan Station, ZSS) and the antipode western Antarctica (Chinese Great Wall Station, GWS), which are separated by over 4000 km. Differences in odd mass-independent isotope fractionation (odd-MIF) and mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) across fish tissues were reflection of the specific accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic Hg (iHg) with different isotopic fingerprints. Internal metabolism including hepatic detoxification and processes related to heart may also contribute to MDF. Regional heterogeneity in iHg end-members further provided evidence that bioaccumulated Hg origins can be largely influenced by polar water circumstances and foraging behavior. Sea ice was hypothesized to play critical roles in both the release of Hg with negative odd-MIF derived from photoreduction of Hg 2+ on its surface and the impediment of photochemical transformation of Hg in water layers. Overall, the multitissue isotopic compositions in local fish species and prime drivers of the heterogeneous Hg cycling and bioaccumulation patterns presented here enable a comprehensive understanding of Hg biogeochemical cycling in polar coastal waters.

Abstract:The coastal waters in Jiangsu Province have always been an important fishery base since ancient time. In recent years, with the development of the industry in coastal cities, heavy metal pollution is becoming serious in Jiangsu Province. However, the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the coastal food web is still unclear. In this study, we collected samples (including macroalgae, bivalves, cephalopods, gastropods, crustaceans and fish) through fishery resources survey in the coastal waters of Jiangsu in May 2017 and quantified the main ways of the material circulation and energy flows by constructing the food web using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. In addition, the bioaccumulation patterns of eight elements (seven heavy metals and 1 metalloid) through the food chains were investigated. The results showed that there were two energy pathways in this offshore ecosystem: the planktonic food-chain and the benthic food-chain, with Scapharca subcrenata and Phalium strigatum as the primary consumers, respectively. The benthic food-chain was the dominant food chain in energy recycling. The mean concentration of heavy metals from high to low in orga-nisms were Zn, Cu, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni and Hg. The highest concentrations of elements were found in bivalves and the lowest ones in fish. The concentration of As in most species, the levels of Cd in bivalves and Oratosquilla oratoria, the Cr in Coilia mystus and the Zn, Cu, Cr in Ostrea denselamellosa exceeded the proposed health advisory levels. Regarding the bioaccumulation, a decrease in the concentration levels of Zn, Cd and Ni were observed along the planktonic food-chain and a significant positive correlation between Hg and trophic position were found across the benthic food-chain. Other elements had no significant change.

Abstract:The knowledge of the growth history in young fishes represents an important aspect of fishery ecology. This is especially relevant in short-living species like European anchovy, since they suffer a high mortality rate in their early life stages until recruitment. Although it is well known that habitat condition significantly affects spawning dynamics of fishes, it is not yet clear if these conditions affect growth trajectories during the early life stage’s critical period. Otolith microstructure analysis has been proven a useful tool to back-calculate growth history of young fishes. Thus, we analysed the effect of habitat variability on their growth history using otolith microstructures and environmental variables obtained from satellite imagery. Growth trajectories in juvenile anchovies, collected in two recruitment surveys carried out in 2004 and 2005 in the Strait of Sicily, were characterized by means of three indices within the fast growing period: the maximum increment width, the mean value of increment width, and the time extension of the fast growing period. Obtained results evidenced a clear effect of environmental conditions, particularly of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration, on the growth histories of juveniles of anchovy. Furthermore, delayed effects of environmental conditions at hatching time on the forthcoming growth dynamics were discussed.

Abstract:The Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) is a small pelagic fish found in the Sea of Japan, the marginal sea of the western North Pacific. It is an important species for regional fisheries, but their transportation and migration patterns during early life stages remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed the stable oxygen isotope ratios of otoliths of young-of-the-year (age 0) Japanese sardines collected from the northern offshore and southern coastal areas of the Sea of Japan in 2015 and 2016. The ontogenetic shifts of the geographic distribution were estimated by comparing the profiles of life-long isotope ratios and temporally varying isoscape, which was calculated using the temperature and salinity fields produced by an ocean data assimilation model. Individuals that were collected in the northern and southern areas hatched and stayed in the southern areas (west offshore of Kyushu) until late June, and thereafter, they can be distinguished into two groups: one that migrated northward at shallow layer and one that stayed around the southern area in the deep layer. A comparison of somatic growth trajectories of the two groups, which was reconstructed based on otolith microstructure analysis, suggested that individuals that migrated northward had significantly larger body lengths in late June than those that stayed in the southern area. These results indicate that young-of-the-year Japanese sardines that hatched in the southern area may have been forced to choose one of two strategies to avoid extremely high water temperatures within seasonal and geographical limits. These include migrating northward or moving to deeper layers. Our results indicate that the environmental variabilities in the southern area could critically impact sardine population dynamics in the Sea of Japan.

Abstract:To study the influence of mariculture on mercury (Hg) speciation and distribution in sediments and cultured fish around Hong Kong and adjacent mainland China waters, sediment samples were collected from six mariculture sites and the corresponding reference sites, 200–300m away from the mariculture sites. Mariculture activities increased total mercury, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen and sulfur concentrations in the surface sediments underneath mariculture sites, possibly due to the accumulation of unconsumed fish feed and fish excretion. However, methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and the ratio of MeHg to THg (% MeHg) in sediments underneath mariculture sites were lower than the corresponding reference sites. The % MeHg in sediments was negatively correlated (r=−0.579, p<0.05) with organic matter (OM) content among all sites, indicating that OM may have inhibited Hg methylation in surface sediments. Three mariculture fish species were collected from each mariculture site, including red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) and snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii). The average MeHg concentration in fish muscle was 75μgkg−1 (wet weight), and the dietary intake of MeHg through fish consumption for Hong Kong residents was 0.37μgkg−1week−1, which was lower than the corresponding WHO limits (500μgkg−1 and 1.6μgkg−1week−1).

Abstract:The morphometrics of the median process of the male pygophore of four species of blood-sucking bugs (Rhodnius prolixus, R. robustus, R. nasutus and R. neglectus) were compared using one-way analysis of variance. Although there were no significant differences in the pygophoral patterns within the R. nasutus-R. neglectus or R. prolixus-R. robustus species pairs, there were clear-cut differences between them; the median process of R. nasutus-R. neglectus is stout and subtriangular whereas that of R. prolixus-R. robustus is more narrow and elongated. The basal width of the process, classically used to separate R. robustus from R. prolixus and R. nasutus from R. neglectus, seems to have little taxonomic value. Other characters which have been assumed to be species-specific should be subjected to a similar quantitative analysis.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of research related to the role of fish farming on mercury (Hg) speciation and distribution in aquatic system. It critically reviews the major farm activities, e.g., organic waste loading, eutrophication and antibiotics using on the biogeochemical cycling of Hg. Hg is one of the most hazardous metals in the environment. The main exposure pathway of Hg to humans is through the consumption of fishery products. With the increasing consumption amount of fishery product, intensive fish farming activities increased dramatically and the production of aquaculture fish exceed the capture fish since 2013. However, intensive fish farming activities may change physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the benthic environment, which may have substantial influence on Hg speciation change and afterward bioaccumulation in fish through food chain. Thus, it is important to know how fish farming activities trigger Hg speciation change and distribution in the aquatic system, associated with the variation of Hg uptake by the aquaculture fish.
