Abstract:Considering the extensive agricultural practices along the perennial rivers, viz. Periyar and Bharathappuzha of Kerala in the southwest coast of India, the first comprehensive surveillance of new and legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediment was conducted. Further, the sediment–water exchange fluxes have been elucidated. Mean concentrations of total HCH, DDT and endosulfan were 0.84 ng/g, 0.42 ng/g and 0.30 ng/g for Bharathappuzha Riverine sediment (BRS) and 1.08 ng/g, 0.39 ng/g and 0.35 ng/g for Periyar Riverine sediment (PRS). The dominance α -HCH and β -HCH isomers in PRS and BRS reflect the ongoing use of technical HCH in Kerala. The calculated K SW in both rivers was very low in comparison with other Indian rivers. The average log K ′ OC for all the detected OCPs in both the rivers was lower than the predicted log K OC in equilibrium indicating the higher adherence of OCPs to sediment. Furthermore, fugacity fraction (f s / f w ) was < 1.0 for all OCPs confirming the net deposition of OCPs into the sediment. Sediment concentrations for each of the OCPs in PRS and BRS did not surpass the threshold effect level and probable effect level as stipulated by the Canadian Council of Ministry of the Environment Guidelines. In addition, all the sites of both rivers had sediment quality guideline quotient (SQGQ) values below 0.1 indicating the absence of significant biological and ecological risks.

Abstract:Selected persistent organochlorine pollutants, including DDT and its metabolites, hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, Aldrin, heptachlor, HCH as well as some of their isomers were determined in water, sediment and fish samples from the Ethiope River in Southern Nigeria. Twenty organochlorine pesticides were detected in both seasons from October 2012 – September 2013. Results revealed ∑HCH to be 0.620μg/L (water), 33 ng/g (sediment) and 29.00 ng/g (fish) for the rainy season while concentrations of 0.170 μg/L (water), 14 ng/g (sediment) and 28.00 ng/g (fish) were obtained for the dry season. 0.05–0.15 ng/g for aldrin, 0.12–5.8 ng/g for dieldrin, 0.22–0.64 ng/g for endrin, 0.24–6.37 ng/g for endosulfan and 0.21–8.81 ng/g for ΣDDT (p, p` -DDD, p, p` -DDE, p, p` -DDT). Among the OCPs, ∑HCH, endosulfan and PDDT were the most dominant compounds in the river sediments. γ- HCH was the most frequent detected compound in all the samples from this river. Among the cyclodiene compounds, aldrin was in abundance in most of the sediments, water and fish samples. γ-HCH, γ-HCH and HCB contributed this highest value for the water, sediment and fish sample respectively in the rainy season while aldrin, endrin and HCB were the highest contributors to the ΣOCPs to the mean of water, sediment and fish respectively. Hazard quotient and bioaccumulation analysis carried out on the fish sample revealed that the fishes were heavily contaminated with values >1 for both seasons which possess a possibility for ecological concern.

Abstract:Inland freshwater aquaculture ponds (IFAPs) represent the key component of the global lentic freshwater environment and are increasingly important for global aquaculture production, yet the occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in these pond systems remains largely unknown. Here, we characterized the residual concentrations of 19 individual OCPs in sediments and in cultured fish and crustacean species (crabs, shrimp, crayfish and lobster), which were on-spot sampled from the IFAPs at a large region-scale in China. The total OCP levels in sediments varied dramatically between regions. Crabs presented the greatest OCP contamination among the studied species. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) was the dominating contaminant in sediments and crabs and its stable degradation products 4,4′-DDE and 4,4′-DDD were co-occurrent between these two compartments. The diagnostic ratio analysis indicated fresh inputs of DDTs, lindane and aldrin in multiple regions, which may be resulted from agricultural soil erosion, surface runoff and local anthropogenic activities. Ecological impacts of these pesticides could be expected at some sites due to their levels in sediments above the risk level. Risk assessment based on the OCP levels corrected by the cooking loss revealed that daily consumption of the IFAPs-derived aquatic foods may pose carcinogenic risks in humans.

Abstract:One hundred two semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), including 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 12 organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), were determined in the main rivers of Shenzhen, China. As a result, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), aldrin, and benzoepin sulfate were the main OCPs detected in surface water, and p,p'-DDD, heptachlor, and endrin aldehyde were the main compounds in sediment. In addition, diazinon was the most frequent OPP detected in both water and sediment. At most sites, SVOCs were at similar concentration levels in 2017 and 2018. Compared with other areas, diazinon and malathion had comparative high concentrations in Maozhou River in this study. Analyzed from the SVOCs concentrations in water and sediment, p,p'-DDD was from the quick degradation of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and no recent DDT was input around the investigated area. Besides, the interrelationships among these pollutants were calculated, revealing that OPPs were mainly from the chronically cumulative content, rather than the directly transferring from surface water to sediment. According to the risk assessment, the occurrence of p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDT affected the aquatic community. All in all, further investigations on the occurrence and source of these pollutants are still needed to avoid the potential risk for human beings living around the contaminated environment.

Abstract:The levels of 13 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface water and sediments from Qiantang River in East China were investigated to evaluate their potential pollution and risks. A total of 180 surface water samples at 45 sampling sites and 48 sediment samples at 19 sampling stations were collected along the river in four seasons of 2005. Soil samples and wet deposition samples were also collected to provide evidence on the source of OCPs pollution. The total OCPs concentrations in surface water and sediments were 7.68–269.4ng/L and 23.11–316.5ng/g-dry weight (dw), respectively. The concentrations of OCPs in sediments were in the range of 8.22–152.1ng/g-dw for HCHs (α-, β-, γ-, δ-HCH), 1.14–100.2ng/g-dw for DDTs (p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDT o,p′-DDD), 9.41–69.66ng/g-dw for other OCPs (aldrin, diedrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide). The total OCPs concentrations in soils and wet deposition were 5.04–214.9ng/g-dw and 16.18–242.4ng/L, respectively. Among the OCPs, HCHs, DDTs and heptachlor were the most dominant compounds in the sediments. The dominant OCPs in water were γ-HCH among HCHs, heptachlor among other OCPs and p,p′-DDE among DDTs. Also, different contamination patterns among sampling seasons were found. The concentrations of OCPs in sediment collected in spring were higher than those in summer and autumn. In contrast, the concentrations of OCPs in surface water in summer and autumn were higher among four sampling seasons. Distribution of HCHs, DDTs and other OCPs were different indicating their different contamination sources. The notable contamination was found in Fuchun reservoir. Composition analyses in sediments indicated a recent usage or discharge of lindane into the river.

Abstract:Persistent organochlorine compounds were analyzed in surface water, porewater and surficial sediment samples from Minjiang River Estuary, which is the first large river in Fujian Province, Southeast of China. The total concentrations of 18 organochlorine pesticides were 214.4-1819, 4541-13,699 ng/l, 28.79-52.07 ng/g in surface water, porewater and sediments (dry weight) respectively, and those of 21 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the three phases were: 203.9-2473, 3192-10,855 ng/l, 15.14-57.93 ng/g respectively. The results showed that the concentrations of these selected organochlorine pesticides and PCBs in porewater were higher than those in surface water. It may be due to the fact that these organic hydrophobic pollutants tend to stay in the sediments, and then re-suspend from the sedimentary phase to the upper water. We have analyzed the distribution characteristics of individual organochlorine pesticide components and PCBs, and found that alpha-HCH, DDE, Heptachlor, Endosulfan II, Methoxychlor were the most common organochlorine pesticides contaminants. Considering the groups of HCHs (HCHs=alpha-HCH+beta-HCH+gamma-HCH+delta-HCH) and DDTs (DDTs=DDT+DDD+DDE), the predominance of beta-HCH, DDE in all water, porewater and sediment samples was clearly observed. This observation suggested that beta-HCH was resistant to biodegradation and the DDTs had been transformed to its metabolites, DDE and DDD, of which DDE that was more un-degradable. The PCB congeners containing 3-6 chlorines had the great preponderance in the three phase. These results were compared with those present in other estuaries and harbors. A risk assessment was evaluated for the persistent organic pollutants in the Minjiang River Estuary.
Should we diagnose and treat distal deep vein thrombosis?

Abstract:Ultrasound series report that isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as calf DVT, represents up to 50% of all lower-limb DVTs and, therefore, is a frequent medical condition. Unlike proximal DVT and pulmonary embolism, which have been studied extensively and for which management is well standardized, much less is known about the optimal management of isolated calf DVT. Recent data arising from registries and nonrandomized studies have suggested that most distal DVTs do not extend to the proximal veins and have an uneventful follow-up when left untreated. These data had some impact on the international recommendations that recently stated that ultrasound surveillance instead of systematic therapeutic anticoagulation might be an option for selected low-risk patients. However, robust data from randomized studies are scarce. Only 5 randomized trials assessing the need for anticoagulation for calf DVT have been published. Many of these trials had an open-label design and were affected by methodological limitations. The only randomized placebo-controlled trial included low-risk patients (outpatients without cancer or previous venous thromboembolism [VTE]) and was hampered by limited statistical power. Nevertheless, data from this trial confirmed that the use of therapeutic anticoagulation in low-risk patients with symptomatic calf DVT is not superior to placebo in reducing VTE but is associated with a significantly higher risk of bleeding. Further randomized studies are needed to define the best therapy for high-risk patients (inpatients, patients with active cancer, or patients with previous VTE) and the optimal dose and duration of treatment.
Distribution, Source Identification and Risk Assessment of Organochlorine Pesticides (ocps) in Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) from Lake Chaohu

Abstract:The residual levels of organochlorine pesticides( OCPs) in suspended particulate matter( SPM) of four sampling sites collected from Lake Chaohu( May 2010-April 2011) were measured. The temporal-spatial variation and composition of OCPs were analyzed and potential sources and ecological risks of OCPs were also explored. Results showed that:( 1) Seventeen types of OCPs were detected in the SPM samples of Lake Chaohu,including 4 isomers of HCHs( α-,β-,γ-,δ-HCH),two parent DDT compounds( o,p'-,p,p'-DDT) and their three metabolic products( o,p'-,p,p'-DDE,p,p'-DDD),HCB,Heptachlor,Aldrin,Isodrin,2 isomers of Chlordane( α-,γ-chlordane),Endosulfan I and Mirex.( 2) The annual average concentration of ∑OCPs in the SPM of Lake Chaohu was 172. 7 ± 434. 9 ng / g,and HCHs and DDTs accounted for 15. 1 ± 10. 3 and 138. 8 ± 407. 3 ng /g,respectively. The DDT content reached a maximum value in the summer. Regarding the spatial variability in the degree of pollution,the following trend was observed: eastern lake western lake central lake.( 3) DDTs were the primary constituents of the total OCPs. The proportion of DDTs was the highest in the summer and the lowest in the fall. However,HCHs were the most significant pollutants only in the fall.( 4) Considering possible sources,HCHs were derived from the illegal use of lindane,while DDTs likely originated from the industrial use of DDTs and illegal use in the spring. Moreover,DDTs degraded primarily under aerobic conditions.( 5) In the SPM of Lake Chaohu,residual p,p'-DDT and o,p'-DDT may have adverse impact on the aquatic organisms.
Concentrations of Ddts and Dieldrin in Long Island Sound Sediment

Abstract:The concentrations of three frequently detected organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and one degradation product, p, p'-DDT, p, p'-DDD, dieldrin, and p, p'-DDE were determined in recently collected (20052006) and archived (1986-1989) surficial sediments and sediment cores from Long Island Sound (LIS). The concentration of dieldrin ranged from 0.05 to 5.27 ng g(-1) dry weight in the surficial sediments, and from 0.05 to 11.7 ng g(-1) dry weight in the sediment cores. Total DDXs (the sum of p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDT) concentrations ranged from 1.31 to 33.2 ng g(-1) in surficial sediments and 1.11 to 66.4 ng g(-1) in sediment cores. The results indicate that the three OCPs and DDE were still widely present in LIS surficial sediments two decades after the use of these pesticides in the United States was banned. In addition, the surficial concentrations did not decrease significantly when compared to the concentrations in archived samples collected two decades ago. Sediments in the western part of LIS were more contaminated (with concentrations in some western sites being still above probable effect levels) than those in the eastern part, probably as a result of the net westward sediment transport in LIS. The three OCPs and DDE were detected at all depths (down to similar to 50 cm) in the sediment cores, and concentration profiles indicated a depositional sedimentary environment with significant sediment mixing. Such mixing may redistribute OCPs deposited earlier (deeper in sediment bed) to the sediment surface and lead to enhanced persistence of OCP concentrations in surficial sediments.

Abstract:This work analyzed the distribution characteristics, sources, and corresponding environmental risks of 10 organochlorine pollutants (OCPs) in soil samples from 13 stations on the Fildes Peninsula and Adelaide Island in Antarctica in 2020. Results showed that the total amount of OCP residues in the study area ranged from N.D. to 2.66 ng·g−1 with an average concentration of 0.90 ng·g−1. Six organochlorine pesticides were detected, and the residue level of DDTs was slightly lower than that of HCHs. The residues of HCHs were mainly γ-HCH and those of DDTs were mainly O, P′-DDT. Source analysis revealed that the residues mainly originated from atmospheric transport and human activities. Environmental risk analysis showed that in the study area, the residues of HCHs and DDTs were present at low levels, and their ecological risk was low.

Abstract:The contents of organochlorine pesticides（OCPs） in surface sediments from 14 sampling sites in Lake Chaohu were measured by GC-MS.The distributions,compositions,relationships with TOC and potential ecological risks of OCPs were analyzed.The results showed that the total concentrations of 12 detectable OCPs in the surface sediments of Lake Chaohu ranged 0.58~32.91 ng · g-1（dry weight）,within which the concentration ranges of HCHs and DDTs were 0.23~1.81 and 0.34~31.01 ng · g-1,respectively.The highest residual levels of HCHs and DDTs were found in the centre of western lake area,followed by the eastern water source area,the eastern part of the lake（water source district excluded）,and the eastern inflow rivers.Dieldrin and endrin were mainly distributed in the eastern part of the lake.The correlation between OCPs contents and TOC contents in sediments was not significant,indicating that the content of OCPs in the sediments was also affected by other factors.HCHs and DDTs in the sediments of Lake Chaohu were originated mainly from their historical usage,as indicated by their composition characteristics.Compared to the consensus-based sediment quality guidelines（CB-SQGs） for freshwater ecosystem,OCPs in the surface sediments from some areas of Lake Chaohu posed big ecological risks to benthic organisms.

Abstract:Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are pesticides with global scale ubiquity, persistence and bioaccumulation, which leave long-term residuals in the water body. OCPs’ high toxicity poses significant threats to human health and aquatic biodiversity, making assessment of OCPs’ impact on aquatic ecology and human health urgently necessary. In this research, the presence of 16 OCPs in surface water and groundwater along Shaying River, China, as well as OCPs concentration correlations, was investigated at 24 selected sampling sites. At the same time, the ecological risk and human carcinogenic risk were also analyzed by risk quotient method and USEPA’s Risk Assessment Guidance, respectively. Results showed that the total concentration of OCPs ranged from 21.0 to 61.4 ng L−1 in groundwater, and 12.3–77.5 ng L−1 in surface water. Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and heptachlor were the prominent contaminants in groundwater, which indicated their use in the recent past and confirmed their persistence. The α-HCH/γ-HCH ratios in groundwater confirmed that γ-HCH (lindane) was used as main substitute of technical HCH in the study area. The correlation analysis illustrated that δ-HCH and γ-HCH played a dominant role in HCHs residue. Heptachlor and α-HCH, as well as endosulfan and heptachlor epoxide, had a strongly significant positive correlation, suggesting an associated usage of the two pair OCPs. An extremely high ecological risk for aquatic organism was observed for γ-HCH, heptachlor and dieldrin, while the carcinogenic risks posed by the selected OCPs in surface water and groundwater were all acceptable.

Abstract:A sedimentary record of the 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) pollutants from Dongping Lake, north China, is presented in this study. According to the dating of core sediment and OCP content analysis in samples, from 1904 to 2016, the total concentration of OCPs varied from undetectable levels (n.d.) to 33.1 ng/g. The OCP concentration was first detected in the samples of 1938, and then gradually increased to a peak level in 2000 thereafter decreased until 2016. Among the detected OCPs, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the predominant and the most frequently detected contaminants in the core sediment, with concentrations ranging from n.d. to 16.9 ng/g and from n.d. to 8.8 ng/g, respectively. The distribution of OCPs in the sediments was affected by organic carbon concentration, showing a significant positive correlation ( r = 0.93, p < 0.001), especially for HCHs ( r = 0.98, p < 0.001). The source analysis showed that HCH contamination mainly derived from historical use of technical HCHs, while in recent years, it derived from lindane usage. DDT pollution was attributed to historical use of technical DDTs, as well as the microbial degradation of historic DDT residues. Finally, risk analysis was performed for OCPs in sediment cores based on sediment quality guidelines from the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, showing that DDTs presented a high ecological toxicity risk during the period of 1959–2010.

Abstract:The occurrence, distribution, sources, and ecological risks of organochlorine pesticides in Dongting Lake of China were investigated. The average concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 22 surface water samples and 14 sediment samples were 90.07 ng/L and 80.65 ng/g dw, respectively. Sixteen types of OCPs, dominated by HCHs, DDTs and heptachlor, were detected in the Dongting Lake. The relationships of OCP residues between Dongting Lake and its tributary rivers have been discussed and the hydraulic connections with the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) were also considered. Results showed that the shortage of runoff, earlier dry season, and reduction of sediment deposition extremely deteriorated the hydraulic conditions, magnified the water cycle, and restrained the self-purification of OCPs. The ∑OCPs in surface water were concentrated in the inlets of Yangtze River, Lishui River, Zishui River, Yuanshui River, and Xiangjiang River. Moreover, the ∑OCPs in the outlet of the Yangtze River also maintained a high level, indicating that OCPs posed adverse effects on the Yangtze River. Risk assessments of OCPs in the surface water of Dongting Lake were estimated according to available water quality guidelines and health risk assessment models. The results indicated that OCPs in the surface water of Dongting Lake were safe for aquatic organisms and human health. In addition, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) were also applied to evaluate the potential ecotoxicological risks of OCPs in sediments. The results presented that contaminants of γ-HCH; o,p′-DDD; and dieldrin in sediment had adverse effects on benthic organisms, indicating that fundamental solutions should be proposed to control OCP contamination in Dongting Lake.

The total concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (ΣDDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (ΣHCH) were in the range of 0.04–1.61 and 0.08–1.88 ng/g based on dry weight (dw), while the input fluxes were in the range of 0.3–236 and 0.7–295 pg/cm2/y in the core sediments, respectively. The input fluxes of ΣDDT and ΣHCH generally peaked in sediment layers corresponding to the 1970s–1990s and peaked in top sediment layers. The ratio of α/γ-HCH decreased in the top layer sediments, implying that the contribution of lindane (pure γ-HCH) has been increasing in recent years. In addition, the ratio of o,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDT increased significantly over the last 15–20 years, suggesting that dicofol (characterized by high ratio of o,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDT about 7.0) has recently become a relatively more important source of DDT compared to technical DDT itself. The time trends of OCPs recorded in lake sediments examined the impact on such remote alpine regions by human activities.

Abstract:The spatial distributions and chiral signals of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediments from Yueqing Bay and Sanmen Bay, East China Sea were investigated. The total OCPs concentrations ranged from 2.11 to 18.15ngg−1 dry weight for all the sampling stations. HCHs and DDTs were dominant, although trans-chlorodane/cis-chlorodane were also observed in some sites. The predominant β-HCH and the α-HCH/γ-HCH ratios indicated that the residues of HCHs in these places mainly originated from the historical usage of technical HCH. However, the ratios of (DDE+DDD)/DDT reflected a cocktail input pattern of fresh and weathered DDTs. Based on ERL/ERM guidelines, p,p′-DDT and ΣDDT posed a small risk to the bottom-dwelling consumers, while p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDE and Σchlorodane were not found at concentrations expected to adversely affect sediment biota. Enantiomeric analysis showed that the degradation of chiral OCPs was enantioselective, resulting in enrichment of (−)-enantiomers for α-HCH, o,p′-DDT and o,p′-DDD in all samples. These results implied that the sediment quality guidelines of chiral OCPs should be reassessed using concentrations of their individual enantiomers.
Occurrence of Unapproved Pesticides and their Ecotoxicological Significance for an Agriculturally Influenced Reservoir and its Tributaries in Nepal

Abstract:Many catchments in Nepal are affected by intensive agricultural activities, leading to extensive pesticide usages. This study aimed to assess pesticide abundance in concurrently collected water, sediment and fish samples for the first time in intensively cultivated catchment (Indra Sarowar) located in the mid-hill region of Nepal during the rice and vegetables growing season. A total of 75 pesticides were analysed, of which 4 pesticides (alachlor, diuron, metalaxyl and pyrimethanil) were present in water with detection frequency (DF) > 40%, with alachlor (0.62 – 2.68 μg L −1 ) being ubiquitous. In the sediment of tributaries, the pesticides p,p′-DDT, β-HCH, alachlor and diuron were detected with DF exceeding 40%, where β-HCH was commonly observed (DF = 92%) with concentration ranging from 6.29 – 99.22 μg kg −1 . The ecotoxicological risk indicated that herbicides (alachlor and diuron) posed a high risk to aquatic organisms in both tributaries and reservoir water. Such risk in sediment was even more pronounced, with alachlor and diuron showing up to 2.3 and 53.7 times higher risk respectively compared to water samples. However, none of these herbicides were detected in fish muscles. Among the fish species studied, pyrimethanil was the only quantified pesticide in edible tissue of both cage cultured (0.35 – 1.80 μg g −1 ww) and open stock fishes (0.06 – 1.12 μg g −1 ww). The consumer risk assessment showed very low human health risk associated with fish consumption (HQ < 0.2). Nonetheless, long-term consumption of contaminated fish may pose some risk that cannot be ignored. Overall, this study generated the benchmark data highlighting pervasive presence of banned (DDT, endosulfan, HCH) and unapproved (alachlor, diuron, pyrimethanil) pesticides in the environmental compartments in the mid-hill's streams of Nepal.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analysed from sediment samples collected in 2012 from rivers, surface runoff canals and estuaries in three highly urbanised catchments in durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. PAHs were ubiquitous, at concentrations between 36–6 800 ng g−1 dry mass (dm). Congener ratio diagnosis suggests the PAHs were derived predominantly from pyrogenic sources. Four OCPs and/or their metabolites were detected at varying frequencies and concentrations. Of these, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (ddT) and metabolites were most frequently detected and were at a high concentration in sediment in some systems. Toxaphene was detected at a high concentration at some sites. The total PCB concentration varied widely, from below the method detection limit to 110 ng g−1 (dm). Based on the comparison of chemical concentrations to international sediment quality guidelines, PAH, OCP and PCB concentrations in most sediment samples posed a low risk to sediment-dwelling organisms. However, in some instances the risk was moderate or high. It is recommended that these compounds be monitored more frequently and comprehensively in aquatic ecosystems to better understand the ecological and human health implications.

Abstract:Forty-eight surface sediment samples collected from Jiaozhou Bay, Taozi Bay and Sishili Bay were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) by Gas Chromatography. Results showed that average concentrations of HCHs, HCB and DDTs in marine sediments were 0.33, 0.31 and 10.33 ng x g(-1) in Jiaozhou Bay and 0.26, 0.10 and 4.56 ng x g(-1) in Taozi Bay and Sishili Bay, respectively. Contamination status of OCPs was relatively higher in Jiaozhou Bay than in other inland coastal regions, especially for the levels of DDTs; however, OCPs concentrations were relatively low in Taozi Bay and Sishili Bay. The source of HCHs could be mainly attributed to the heavy historical application in agricultural areas and late transport to coastal region through surface runoff or riverine discharge, and DDTs were primarily originated from the use of technical DDTs. Fresh input of lindane and dicofol-type DDTs were found in several sites, such as Qingdao Port. High concentrations of DDTs in Jiaozhou Bay should arouse much attention.

Abstract:The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediments from the lower reaches of the Haihe River basin, northern China, were determined by high-resolution gas chromatograph–high-resolution mass spectrometer. The concentrations of 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and total OCPs [sum of hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexanes, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs)] in 17 sediment samples were in the ranges of 11.6–1,180,924 pg/g dry weight (dw), 18.7–50,017 pg/g dw, and 1.7–35,280 ng/g dw, respectively. The contamination levels in the samples varied significantly between the different sites. Abnormally high concentrations of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and some OCPs were found in sediments from the lower reaches of the main channel of the Haihe River and the Dagu Drainage River, which were attributed to the historical production of pentachlorophenol and other pesticides near these locations. High levels of DDTs were detected in the Yongding New River sediment, which were likely to have originated from the discharge of wastewater from a dicofol factory upstream. In samples taken from other sites, the concentrations of these pollutants were at levels comparable to those documented in other areas of China. This preliminary investigation suggests that historical pesticide production in the Haihe River basin has contributed significantly to the contamination of this aquatic ecosystem and that further attention to this issue is warranted.
