Abstract:Chlorpyrifos is one of the most extensively used insecticides in China. The distribution and residues of chlorpyrifos in a paddy environment were characterized under field and laboratory conditions. The half-lives of chlorpyrifos in the two conditions were 0.9–3.8 days(field) and 2.8–10.3 days(laboratory), respectively. The initial distribution of chlorpyrifos followed the increasing order of water < straw < soil, and soil was characterized as the major absorber. The ultimate residues in rice grain were below the maximum residue limit(MRL) with a harvest interval of 14 days. The chronic exposure for chlorpyrifos was rather low compared to the acceptable daily intake(ADI = 0.01 mg/kg bw) due to rice consumption. The chronic exposure risk from chlorpyrifos in rice grain was 5.90% and 1.30% ADI from field and laboratory results respectively. Concerning the acute dietary exposure,intake estimated for the highest chlorpyrifos level did not exceed the acute reference dose(ARf D = 0.1 mg/kg bw). The estimated short-term intakes(ESTIs) were 0.78% and 0.25% of the ARf D for chlorpyrifos. The results showed that the use of chlorpyrifos in rice paddies was fairly safe for consumption of rice grain by consumers.

Abstract:Chlorothalonil is a fungicide commonly used to prevent and control leafy vegetable diseases. The residual distribution of chlorothalonil on cabbage is unclear and rarely reported. The spatiotemporal distribution of chlorothalonil was used to understand its environmental behavior in cabbage. The results of open-field experiments demonstrated that chlorothalonil was distributed primarily on the second and third layers of rosette leaves and the first layer of bulb leaves. The chlorothalonil residues on cabbage followed the order of winter > fall > summer, and heading stage > rosette stage > seedling stage. Chlorothalonil on cabbage underwent -OH substitution forming 4-hydroxychlorothalonil, and reductive dechlorination forming 2,4,5-trichloro-1,3-isophthalonitrile, 2,5-dichloro-1,3-isophthalonitrile, and 5-chloro-1,3-isophthalonitrile. The residues of chlorothalonil in the outermost leaves of cabbage bulb pose an unacceptable risk to human health via dietary exposure. This study contributes to better understanding on the fate and transformation chlorothalonil in cabbage and potential risks to human health via dietary consumption.
Subcellular Distribution Governing Accumulation and Translocation of Pesticides in Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.)

Abstract:Root uptake, translocation, and subcellular distribution of six pesticides (dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, imazethapyr, propiconazole, and chlorpyrifos) with K-ow ranging from -0.549 to 4.7 were investigated in wheat to study transportation and accumulation of pesticides. The root bioconcentration factor (RCF) of pesticides decreased with water solubility (R-2 = 0.6121) and increased with hydrophobicity (when the pH-adjusted log K-ow > 2, R-2 = 0.925), respectively. The translocation of neutral pesticides from roots to shoots increased positively with water solubility (R-2 > 0.6484) but decreased with hydrophobicity (R-2 > 0.8039). The subcellular fraction concentration factor (SFCF) increased linearly with hydrophobicity of the tested pesticides (R-2 > 0.958). The log RCF was positively correlated with log SFCF in root cell walls (R-2 = 0.9894) and organelles (R-2 = 0.9786). Transportation of the pesticides from roots to stems and stems to leaves was adversely affected by the log SFCF of cell walls and organelles of roots (R-2 > 0.7997) and stems (R-2 > 0.6666), respectively. Hydrophobicity-dependent SFCF is a factor governing accumulation of pesticides in roots after uptake and their subsequent upward translocation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
The distribution and human health risk assessment of eight neonicotinoid residues in agricultural soils from four provinces, south China

Abstract:The widespread use of neonicotinoid (neonic) insecticides in China's agricultural sector has led to high residual concentrations in the agroecosystem. Since soil is the primary source of direct pesticide exposure, soil contamination is a significant concern, particularly in regions with extensive agricultural production. This study aims to determine the spatial distribution of neonics in farmlands from four southern provinces that are home to China's crucial commercial grain bases. By combining eight neonics into imidacloprid-equivalent total neonics (IMI RPF ) using the relative potency factor method, the ecological risks to humans were also assessed. The results showed that imidacloprid had the highest detection rate (96%–100%), followed by thiamethoxam and clothianidin, which ranged from 44% to 64%. Maximum and average IMI RPF values in soil samples from Zhejiang Province were 277.02 and 46.05 μg kg −1 (dry weight), respectively. Guangdong (maximum = 191.62 μg kg −1 , mean = 39.70 μg kg −1 ) and Jiangxi (maximum = 199.13 μg kg −1 , mean = 28.95 μg kg −1 ) had comparable IMI RPF while Jiangsu had the lowest level of total neonics, with a maximum of 86.07 μg kg −1 and a mean of 19.49 μg kg −1 . A significant positive correlation between IMI RPF and total organic carbon in soils was also found. The average daily doses of neonics from soil-borne exposure through food intake, soil ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact calculated for adults and children in each province were all lower than the reference dose (RfD, 57 μg kg −1 d −1 ) of imidacloprid. However, the potential health risk to human health cannot be disregarded, given their increasing use and pervasiveness in the environment. Our results help to raise concerns about the safety of the agroecological environment under neonic exposure in the major agricultural provinces of southern China.

Abstract:To investigate tissue distribution, spatial difference, temperature variation, and potential health risks of PAEs in vegetables, celery was used as a model plant. Celery samples were collected from open fields and greenhouses from two provinces in China over four seasons. Celery tissues were analyzed for 16 PAE compounds by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The total content of PAEs was 89.0-1130.3 μg kg<sup>-1</sup> dry weight (dw) in stems and 155.0-2730.8 μg kg<sup>-1</sup> dw in leaves. Concentrations of PAEs in celeries showed notable spatial differences (P < 0.05), and the levels in samples from open fields were lower than those in samples from plastic greenhouses. In celeries from greenhouses, higher PAE concentrations were observed for plants grown at high temperatures than in plants grown at low temperatures. Discrepancies in tissue distribution indicated different uptake pathways of PAE contaminants. Risk assessments to humans found that both carcinogenic risks and non-carcinogenic risks of PAEs via celery consumption were at an acceptable level. Further research should consider other exposure pathways of PAEs and pay special attention to reducing PAE contents in vegetables.

Abstract:The health risks for dietary exposure after large-scale ethirimol application demand attention to protect the human population from hazardous effects. The occurrence, dissipation and terminal magnitude of ethirimol were revealed by original deposition of <0.005−28.1 mg kg −1 , half-lives of 0.6–14.5 d, and terminal concentrations of <loq−20.7 mg kg −1. The dietary risks and noncarcinogenic effects of ethirimol were 4.694–166.973% and 3.286–116.881% using a probabilistic estimation. The age of the population was negatively correlated with the hazard quotients, and the risk magnitudes for rural residents was significantly higher than those for urban groups, with a risk order of cos lettuce > spinach > leaf lettuce > pepper > cucumber > papaya > pumpkin > stem lettuce > muskmelon > wax gourd > mango. The high-potential health risks of ethirimol should be continuously emphasized for susceptible children aged 2–13 years, especially those residing in rural areas and presenting increasing vegetable intake.</loq−20.7 mg kg

Abstract:The extensive use of neonicotinoids (NEOs) in agricultural production has led to their pervasive presence in various environmental matrices, including human samples. Given the central role of fruits and vegetables in daily human diets, it is crucial to evaluate the levels of NEOs residues and their potential health risks. In this study, 3104 vegetable samples and 1567 fruit samples from the Shenzhen city were analyzed. Using the relative potency factor (RPF) method, the residue levels of six representative neonicotinoids, including imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), thiamethoxam (THM), dinotefuran (DIN), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THI), were systematically evaluated. The estimated daily intake (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) for both children and adults were calculated to gauge the prevalence and potential health risks of NEOs in fruits and vegetables. Acetamiprid (ACE) was the most frequently detected NEO in vegetables (69.4%) and fruits (73.9%), making it the predominant contributor to total residues. Further analyses indicated notably higher levels of imidacloprid-equivalent total neonicotinoids (IMIRPF) in root and tuber vegetables (3025 μg/kg) and other fruits (243 μg/kg). A significant strong positive correlation (r = 0.748, P < 0.05) was observed between thiamethoxam (THM) and clothianidin (CLO), possibly due to their shared metabolic pathways. Although the mean HI values for adults and children from daily fruit (adults: 0.02, children: 0.01) and vegetable (adults: 0.02, children: 0.03) intake were generally below safety thresholds, some maximum HI values exceeded these limits, indicating that the potential health risks associated with NEOs exposure should not be overlooked.
Residue Levels and Dietary Intake Risk Assessments of 139 Pesticides in Agricultural Produce Using the m-PFC Method Based on SBA-15-C18 with GC-MS/MS

Abstract:A survey was designed to investigate the pesticide residues in agricultural produce and to estimate their potential intake risks to inhabitants. A total of 314 samples of nine types of fruits and vegetables were collected from the supermarkets and vegetable markets of Shandong Province (China) from October 2020 to February 2022. An accurate and reliable multi-residue method, based on GC-MS/MS detection, as well as the multiplug filtration cleanup method, based on SBA-15-C18, was prepared by a solution chemical reaction. Additionally, an in situ co-condensation method was established for the quantification of 139 pesticide residues. Residues that contained no pesticides were detected in 66.5% of the 314 samples. Moreover, of the samples, 30.6% were at or below the MRLs, and 2.9% were above the MRLs. Residues of procymidone were found to be the one that most often exceeded the MRLs (1.3% of the samples). Tebuconazole was found most frequently in 22.0% of the samples analyzed. Consumer exposure to the 139 pesticides did not exceed 100% ADI and ARfD. This led to a consideration that these pesticide residues in the nine commodities may not raise the health risk of the consumers in the long and short term. The highest value of chronic dietary intake was obtained from spirodiclofen, which resulted in a 24.1% of ADI. Furthermore, the highest exposure levels in the short term were obtained from the consumption of leeks with procymidone (58.3% ARfD).

Abstract:Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides have become some of the top-selling fungicides in recent years. As the utilization of these fungicides intensifies, the corresponding potential risks to the environment proportionately increase. However, there is still limited knowledge about their toxic effects on ecosystems. In this study, acute toxicity data from laboratory assessments of the springtail Folsomia candida , alongside collected data from terrestrial and aquatic non-target species, were utilized to construct a species sensitivity distribution (SSD) model for both terrestrial and aquatic non-target organisms. Subsequently, we derived ecological baseline values for diverse scenarios within ecosystems. The results indicated that benzovindiflupyr exhibited the highest 7-day median lethal concentration (7d-LC 50 ) to Folsomia candida at 2.0 μg cm −2 , while the toxicity levels of other SDHI fungicides varied, ranging from 99 to 304 μg cm −2 . In agricultural environments, the Hazard Concentration for 5 % of species (HC 5 ) values for fluxapyroxad, boscalid, sedaxane, and isopyrazam were determined to be 8.0, 1240, 12.97, and 25.37 g ha −1 , respectively. In aquatic environments, the HC 5 values for benzovindiflupyr, fluxapyroxad, boscalid, sedaxane, isopyrazam, and carboxin were 0.0013, 0.022, 1.76, 0.372, 0.013, and 0.161 mg L −1 , respectively. In an evaluation of typical agricultural scenarios within China, SDHI fungicides were found to exert substantial ecological risks to terrestrial non-target fauna and aquatic ecosystems around agricultural fields. Specifically, isopyrazam and fluxapyroxad were identified as posing heightened ecological risks to Typhlodromus pyri and Aphidius rhopalosiphi . Moreover, the application of benzovindiflupyr, carboxin, isopyrazam, and fluxapyroxad in paddy field environments is associated with unacceptable risks to groundwater. The findings of this study contribute significantly to the environmental risk evaluation of SDHI fungicides within farmland system, thereby informing the development of policy frameworks for their scientifically grounded application.

Abstract:In order to assess the risk of pesticides to aquatic ecosystems, five single-dose pesticides including chlorpyrifos, pymetrozine, dinotefuran, azoxystrobin, and acetochlor that are frequently used in developing countries, were selected. Based on the principle of conservative risk assessment, application amounts for different dosage forms were recommended, the Top-Rice model and risk quotient method were used to evaluate the aquatic ecological risk of the aforementioned single-dose pesticide products. The results showed that predicted peak environmental concentration ranges after application on rice were 110.52-564.25 μg/L for chlorpyrifos, 20.79-114.6 μg/L for pymetrozine, 21.81-114.02 μg/L for dinotefuran, 16.52-56.94 μg/L for azoxystrobin, and 167.22-2184.01 μg/L for acetochlor in different seasons of Changsha, Hangzhou, Nanning in China, and Lahore and Faisalabad in Pakistan. Under the current conditions of registered administration, the acute and chronic risks posed by chlorpyrifos to fish and invertebrates were deemed alarming, and those by pymetrozine and dinotefuran were considered acceptable. The acute risk of exposure of azoxystrobin to vertebrates such as fish, and invertebrates such as daphnia and shrimp is alarming, whereas the chronic risk to vertebrates, invertebrates, and algae was acceptable. The acute exposure risk posed by acetochlor was deemed worrying, and in the case of chronic exposure, only 36 % of the simulation group exhibited a risk quotient below 1, indicating no risk. These findings imply that the ecological risks of using registered chlorpyrifos and acetochlor products on rice cannot be ignored. It should be noted that the analysis method and model employed in this study were intentionally conservative to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the potential risks associated with the use of registered pesticide products. However, the model failed to consider influential factors like photolysis of pesticides on the soil surface, thereby introducing a certain degree of conservativeness in the evaluation results.

Abstract:Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) and carbamate pesticides (CPs) are among the most widely used pesticides in China, playing a major role in protecting agricultural commodities. In this study, we determined the cumulative acute exposure to OPs and CPs of Shanghai residents from vegetables and fruits (VFs). The food consumption data were obtained from the Shanghai Food Consumption Survey (SHFCS) of 2012-14 including a total of 1973 participants aged 2-90years. The pesticide residue data were obtained from the Shanghai monitoring programme during 2008-11 with 34 organophosphates and 11 carbamates analysed in a total of 5335 samples of VFs. A probabilistic approach was performed as recommended by the EFSA, using the optimistic model with non-detects set as zero and with processing factors (PFs) being used and the pessimistic model with non-detects replaced by limit of detection (LOD) and without PFs. We used the relative potency factor (RPF) method to normalise the various pesticides to the index compound (IC) of methamidophos and chlorpyrifos separately. Only in the pessimistic model using methamidophos as the IC was there was small risk of exposure exceeding the ARfD (3 mu gkg(-1) bw day(-1)) in the populations of preschool children (0.029%), school-age children (0.022%) and adults (0.002%). There were no risk of exposure exceeding the ARfD of methamidophos in the optimistic model and of chlorpyrifos (100 mu gkg(-1) bw day(-1)) in both optimistic and pessimistic models in all three populations. Considering the Chinese habits of overwhelmingly eating processed food (vegetables being cooked, and fruits being washed or peeled), we conclude that little acute risk was found for the exposure to VF-sourced OPs and CPs in Shanghai.
Dissipation kinetics and the evaluation of dietary risks associated with deltamethrin, ethion, fenazaquin, and fenpropathrin on bell pepper (Solanum annuum L.)

Abstract:Bell peppers, a globally significant crop, face infestations from various pests. In a study, bell peppers were treated with deltamethrin, ethion, fenazaquin, and fenpropathrin at recommended and double the doses, repeated twice with a 10-day interval. The QuEChERS method underwent validation for linearity, matrix match, accuracy, and precision in bell pepper matrices for residue analysis. The limit of detection for the tested pesticides on bell peppers was 0.01 mg/L, with a quantification limit of 0.05 mg/L. Recovery studies showed a range of 94.80% to 102.80%. Initial deposits of deltamethrin, ethion, fenazaquin, and fenpropathrin on bell peppers at recommended doses were 0.371, 1.237, 0.617, and 0.640 mg/L, respectively, and at double doses were 0.712, 1.945, 1.221, and 1.189 mg/L, respectively. Safe waiting periods of 10, 11, 10, and 8 days were suggested for deltamethrin, ethion, fenazaquin, and fenpropathrin, respectively. The corresponding half-lives for the pesticides were 1.96, 1.79, 2.06, and 1.69 days, all following first-order dissipation kinetics. Dietary risk assessment indicated Hazard Quotients (HQ) below 1 and Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake (TMDI) below Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) and Maximum Permissible Intake (MPI) levels. Therefore, at their recommended doses, the pesticides were deemed safe for bell pepper cultivation.

Abstract:A field experiment following good agricultural practices was laid out to study the dissipation of spirotetramat (90 g a.i. ha −1 and 180 g a.i. ha −1 ) and chlorpyrifos (400 g a.i. ha −1 and 800 g a.i. ha −1 ) on cabbage heads and soil. Samples were processed using quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method for residue estimation of spirotetramat and chlorpyrifos, which were further detected using HPLC–PDA and GC-FPD respectively. The residues of spirotetramat on cabbage heads reached below detection limit (BDL) (< 0.05 mg kg −1 ) on 7th and 10th day and for chlorpyrifos, BDL (< 0.01 mg kg −1 ) was achieved on 10th and 15th day for X and 2X dose, respectively. On 20th day after second spray, residues in soil were found to be BDL for both the pesticides. Half-life of spirotetramat and chlorpyrifos was found to be 3 and 2 days, respectively while a safe pre-harvest interval (PHI) of 9 days for spirotetramat and 10 days for chlorpyrifos is suggested on cabbage. The dietary risk assessment studies for various age groups of Indian population, ascertained safety of treated cabbage heads for consumption, as current study revealed that hazard quotient (HQ) < 1 and theoretical maximum dietary intake (TMDI) < maximum permissible intake (MPI) for both the pesticides at respective PHI.

Abstract:Continuous exposure to airborne pesticides causes their gradual accumulation in the human body, eventually posing a threat to human health. To the best of our knowledge, risk assessment study of pesticide non-occupational exposure to residents in agricultural areas has not been conducted in China. In this study, air samples (gas and dust) were collected from inside and outside residences of seven households and an area near the field in a grain-growing area (wheat and maize rotation) for eight months, and the pesticides present were examined both qualitatively and quantitatively. Using a 95% confidence interval, 9 out of 16 pesticides were detected, namely acetamiprid, acetochlor, atrazine, flucarbazone-sodium, imidacloprid, methyldisulfuron-methyl, nicosulfuron-methyl, pendimethalin, and beta-cyhalothrin, and their safety was subsequently evaluated. The results showed that the inhalation exposure of households to beta-cyhalothrin exceeded the acceptable range in the first residential, and the excess lifetime cancer risk of acetochlor inhalation exposure in six households and area around the field exceeds 1E−6, which highlights the need to strengthen preventive screening for cancer risk.

Dietary exposure risk assessment of pyrethroids in fruits and vegetables: a national scale investigation

Abstract:AbstractThe pyrethroids (PYRs) were extensively used to increase agriculture outputs. However, the cumulative exposures of PYRs would bring about potential risks through food intake. It is an urgent requirement to explore the cumulative exposures on the fruits and vegetables. In this study, a total of 1720 samples incorporating eight primary fruits and vegetables collected around China were investigated to assess the health risk for adults and children from eight PYRs. The relative potency factor (RPF) method was employed to reveal both chronic and acute cumulative exposure. As a result, the hazard index (HI) were 0.004 ~ 0.200% and 11.85 ~ 99.19% for chronic and acute cumulative dietary exposure, respectively. The national wide investigation indicated the cumulative assessments were not hazardous. Besides, the acute intake of pear, grape, and lettuce should be paid on more attention, particularly. This study provides compelling evidence to develop relative policy and regulation to improve the food quality and safety.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Abstract Background Recent studies have suggested an extensive exposure to neonicotinoids in human, but the sources and health risk of exposure to neonicotinoids remains little known in children. Methods After 309 school children were selected in 2019 from a dynamic child cohort established in Shanghai, East China, detailed data about basic information, intake of drinking water, and food consumption were collected and 12 typical neonicotinoids and metabolites were determined in morning urine. Sources of exposure to neonicotinoids were explored by binary/ordinal logistic regression model. Health risk was assessed by hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI). Results Except for imidaclothiz, thiacloprid, and 5-OH-imidacloprid, other six neonicotinoids and three metabolites were detected in 81.3% of urine samples overall. After adjusted for potential confounders, Thiamethoxam was more detected in children consuming more fresh vegetables (odds ratio (OR): 2.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21,7.14) and its subgroup (Chinese cabbage (OR: 2.00, 95%CI: 0.89,4.46) and nori and kelp (OR: 2.25, 95%CI:1.21,4.17)). Clothianidin showed a similar association with fresh vegetables and its subgroup to thiamethoxam. N-desmethyl-acetamiprid were detected in children drinking type water more (OR: 1.84, 95%CI: 1.10,3.06). The maximum HQ and HI were 0.3522 and 0.5187, respectively, and 2.8% of children had HIs between 0.1 and 1. Conclusions Tap water and fresh vegetables were potential exposure sources. A low health risk was posed on Chinese children by neonicotinoids. Given limited data about the adverse effects of neonicotinoids on human, sufficient attention should be paid to the exposure to these compounds and potential health effects. Abstract:Acetamiprid (ACE) and cyromazine (CYR) are the two pesticides that are used relatively frequently and in large quantities in cowpea growing areas in Hainan. The uptake, translocation and metabolic patterns and subcellular distribution of these two pesticides in cowpea are important factors affecting pesticide residues in cowpea and assessing the dietary safety of cowpea. In this study, we investigated the uptake, translocation, subcellular distribution, and metabolic pathway of ACE and CYR in cowpea under laboratory hydroponic conditions. The distribution trends of both ACE and CYR in cowpea plants were leaves > stems > roots. The distribution of both pesticides in subcellular tissues of cowpea was cell soluble fraction > cell wall > cell organelle, and both transport modes were passive. A multiplicity of metabolic reactions of both pesticides occurred in cowpea, including dealkylation, hydroxylation and methylation. The results of the dietary risk assessment indicate that ACE is safe for use in cowpeas, but CYR poses an acute dietary risk to infants and young children. This study provided a basis for insights into the transport and distribution of ACE and CYR in vegetables and contributes to the assessment of whether pesticide residues in vegetables could pose a potential threat to human health at high concentrations of pesticides in the environment.

Abstract:Neonicotinoids, widely used on farmland, are ubiquitous in food; however, their distribution among various crops and associated exposure risks at the provincial level in China remain unclear. We collected 19 types of crop samples (fruits, vegetables, and tea) from farmland in nine prefectural cities in Zhejiang Province, China. We analyzed nine commonly used neonicotinoids in the edible portions of these crops. A notable detection rate (42.1 %–82.9 %) and high residual neonicotinoid concentrations (278 ± 357 ng/g) were observed. Tea exhibited the highest residue, followed by fruits, and vegetables showed the lowest ( P < 0.05). Neonicotinoid ratios in crops to soil (R_C/S) and soil to water (R_S/W) were defined to discern insecticide distribution across different environments. Increased water solubility leads to increased migration of neonicotinoids (R_S/W) from agricultural soils to water through runoff, thereby increasing the relative contribution of nitenpyram and dinotefuran in water. In comparison with other studied compounds, all crops demonstrated the strongest soil uptake of thiamethoxam, denoted by the highest R_C/S value. Elevated R_C/S values in tea, pickled cabbage, and celery suggest increased susceptibility of these crops to neonicotinoid absorption from the soil ( P < 0.05). Estimated dietary intake for teenagers, adults and elders was 8.9 ± 0.5, 8.9 ± 0.6, and 8.8 ± 0.3 μg/kg/d, respectively, below the reference dose (57 μg/kg/d). Teenagers, compared to adults and elders, exhibited significantly higher neonicotinoid exposure through fruit consumption, emphasizing the need for increased attention to neonicotinoid exposure among vulnerable populations.

Abstract:The excessive and unreasonable use of fungicides can inevitably lead to increased residues in food and ultimately cause harm to human health. To detect the residues of 8 fungicides in agro-products from 2018 to 2021 in Hebei province China, the method with modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) by Ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectroscopy (UPLC-MS/MS) was developed. The analytical methods were validated with respect to matrix effect, recovery, calibration curves, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). With the developed method, 78 samples collected from 13 vegetable categories were analyzed. The number of samples analyzed at concentrations above the LOQ (1.13 μg/kg to 7.70 μg/kg) was ranging from 5 to 18. The detection rate of metalaxyl, mepanipyrim and triazolone are the lowest among the tested fungicides, and the tebuconazole is the highest. In all 13 vegetable categories, the largest types of fungicides were detected in celery samples. The risk quotient (RQ) of difenoconazole was the highest and the RQ of dimethomorph was the lowest. The RQs of fungicide in vegetables were all less than 100 %. In this study, we have revealed that the residues of eight fungicides shown a low risk to human health.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Cyromazine and acetamiprid are widely applied as pesticides in agriculture, causing increasing concerns about their residues in crops. In this study, cyromazine, acetamiprid and their mixture were applied to cowpea to investigate their degradation dynamics and perform a dietary risk assessment. RESULTS The dissipation behavior of cyromazine and acetamiprid in the single- and mixed-pesticide groups followed first-order kinetics, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.910-0.987. The half-lives of cyromazine and acetamiprid were 1.56-11.18 days in the four different matrices. The half-life of cyromazine in the mixed-pesticide group was similar to or even shorter than that in the single-pesticide group. The highest levels of cyromazine and acetamiprid in cowpea occurred with a preharvest interval (PHI) of 7 days and after two or three applications. These levels are below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture for cyromazine and acetamiprid in cowpea. The risk quotient (RQ) of cyromazine and acetamiprid ranged from 0.0018 to 0.0418, and the NESTI values of the cyromazine and acetamiprid were far below the ARfD as recommended by the EFSA. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the use of cyromazine and acetamiprid and a cyromazine-acetamiprid mixture in cowpea is safe under the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Chinese fields, and the use of a cyromazine-acetamiprid mixture affords even better results than the application of cyromazine alone. Moreover, the residue dynamics information will support the label claims for the application of cyromazine, acetamiprid and a cyromazine-acetamiprid mixture to cowpea fruit.
