Abstract:As the number of foreign patients and the frequency of international academic exchanges increase, English proficiency has become increasingly essential for Chinese nurses in the treatment and nursing processes, clinical academic exchanges, and ongoing education. However, the overall English proficiency of Chinese nurses is generally inadequate, greatly depending on the English that they acquire during their nursing education. This study aims to explore the challenges encountered by Chinese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) nursing students in the process of learning Nursing English, along with the effective self-regulated learning strategies they adopt to overcome these challenges. Data were collected from nine Chinese EFL nursing students through their reflective journals and thematic analysis was applied. Data analysis revealed the variety of challenges EFL nursing students encountered, including language-related challenges, which are linguistic difficulties that relate to Nursing English learning itself, such as Nursing English vocabulary and terminology, English-to-English translation, limited listening comprehension, and the gap between textbook knowledge and its practical application; learner-related challenges, which are difficulties that affect students' emotional, affective, and mental state, primarily caused by uncertainty about the significance of Nursing English, the unexpected difficulty of Nursing English, and failing quizzes; and context-related challenges, which are difficulties relate to social, cultural, and educational context, such as insufficient learning resources, a lack of language environment, and peer pressure. To surmount these challenges, the participants adopted diverse self-regulated learning strategies, including setting goals, previewing in advance and reviewing in time, utilizing word roots, prefixes, and suffixes to facilitate vocabulary learning, repeating, practicing with sounds and writing systems, translating, highlighting and using imagery to overcome language-related challenges; believing in the usefulness and significance of Nursing English, keeping a growth mindset, enjoying Nursing English learning and teacher support and maintaining grit in learning Nursing English to overcome learner-related challenges; and integrating resources, creating supportive language environments and seeking assistance from teachers and cooperating with peers to overcome context-related challenges. Based on these findings, implications are drawn for Nursing English teachers, material designers, curriculum developers, and program designers. We suggest incorporating explicit strategy instruction into regular Nursing English education to enhance nursing students' self-regulated learning.
Cosmology with galaxy clusters II. Projection effects on Hubble constant and gas mass fraction

Abstract:It is well known that a combined analysis of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and the X-ray emission obser- vations can be used to determine the angular diameter distance to galaxy clusters, from which the Hubble constant is derived. The present values of the Hubble constant derived through the SZ/X-ray route have a broad distribution ranging from 30 to 70 km s 1 Mpc 1 . We show that this broad distribution is primar- ily due to the projection effect of aspherical clusters which have been modeled using spherical geometries. The projection ef- fect is also expected to broaden the measured gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters. However, the projection effect either under- or overestimate the Hubble constant and the gas mass fraction in an opposite manner, producing an anticorrelation. Using the published data for SZ/X-ray clusters, we show that the current Hubble constant distribution is negatively correlated with the measured gas mass fraction for same clusters, suggesting that the projection effects are present in current results. If the gas mass fraction of galaxy clusters, when measured out to an outer hydrostatic radius is constant, it may be possible to account for the line of sight geometry of galaxy clusters. However, to perform such an analysis, an independent measurement of the total mass of galaxy clusters, such as from weak lensing, is needed. Using the weak lensing, optical velocity dispersion, SZ and X-ray data, we outline an alternative method to calculate the Hubble constant, which is subjected less to projection effect than the present method based on only the SZ and X-ray data. For A2163, the Hubble constant based on published SZ, X-ray and weak lensing observations is 49 29 km s 1 Mpc 1 .
Investigating the language needs of culturally and linguistically diverse nursing students to assist their completion of the bachelor of nursing programme to become safe and effective practitioners

Abstract:Background: Australia has an increasing number of nursing students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds however problems communicating in the clinical setting, difficulty with academic writing and a tendency to achieve lower grades have been reported. Objectives: To identify the language needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and evaluate the English language support programme to develop appropriate strategies and assist academic progression and clinical communication skills. Design and methods: An action research approach was adopted and this paper reports findings from the first round of semi-structured individual interviews. The strategies suggested by the participants will subsequently be implemented and evaluated during the first cycle of action research. Setting: An Australian Bachelor of Nursing programme which has students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Participants: Eight second and third year students who have a primary language other than English. Results: Four strategies emerged from initial student interviews. The English language support programme to be conducted during semester breaks, ongoing focus on reading and writing but also to include some International English Language Testing System exam strategies and practice, increase the use of nursing specific language and context in the English language support programme, and informing or reminding lecturers of the impact of their lecture delivery style on learning for students from diverse backgrounds. Conclusion: Themes emerging from the initial round of interviews inform both the implementation of the English language support programme and teacher delivery. It is hoped that implementing these strategies will support the English language development of nurses from diverse backgrounds. Proficient communication will more likely contribute to providing safe and effective culturally sensitive care in a culturally diverse health care environment. Additional cycles of action research may be conducted to further improve the programme.

Abstract:Aim To explore the social integration strategies adopted by internationally educated nurses during acculturation and to elucidate their role in facilitating successful adaptation to their host countries. Background With their remarkable resilience, internationally educated nurses navigate numerous challenges in their acculturation process in the host country. Introduction While the importance of effective social integration strategies in the acculturation and subsequent retention of internationally educated nurses is well known, the specific strategies adopted by these nurses have not been extensively explored. This study aims to fill this gap with its unique and significant focus on these strategies. Methods Eight electronic databases were searched for English articles from inception to October 2023 to ensure a comprehensive review. The quality of the included studies was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program checklist. A meta‐synthesis was performed using Sandelowski and Barroso's two‐step approach, and a thematic analysis was performed according to Braun and Clarke's framework. Findings This review included experiences of 258 internationally educated nurses across 16 primary studies and has yielded the overarching theme of 'fostering a sense of belonging'. The overarching theme is supported by three themes: (1) cultivating social capital, (2) employing effective communications, and (3) engaging with the community. Discussion Internationally educated nurses' social integration is a complex process that leverages support networks, establishing connections and overcoming communication barriers. However, the most crucial element is the active involvement of the host community, which plays a significant role in internationally educated nurses' acculturation journey. Conclusion and implications for nursing practice This review has highlighted the importance of social integration in internationally educated nurses' acculturation journey. Interventions such as having a supportive social network, providing a customised communication programme, organising engagement activities and granting overseas home leave are practical strategies that can enhance this journey.

Abstract:Introduction: Non-native-speaking nursing students as well as faculty, preceptors and mentors face specific issues related to language in undergraduate nursing education. A better understanding of the language experiences, needs, requirements, assessments and support activities will guide linguistically responsive learning and teaching and will direct future curriculum development. This scoping review aims to examine and map the extent of literature related to linguistically responsive learning and teaching for non-native speakers in undergraduate nursing education and to describe the lived experiences, barriers and facilitators, language needs, assessment tools and supportive interventions. Methods and analysis: This scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). In May 2023, a preliminary search was conducted. The comprehensive search will include MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL (EBSCO), ERIC (EBSCO) and MLA (EBSCO). OpenGrey (DANS) and reference lists of the included articles will be searched for grey literature and additional articles. Two independent reviewers will screen titles and abstracts, then review the full texts of articles. Data will be extracted using a data extraction form and will be presented in figures, tables and narrative syntheses, in line with the review questions. This review will include articles that describe the experiences of non-native-speaking nursing students, faculty or preceptors in undergraduate nursing education and clinical practice environment. Articles that report on language requirements, needs and assessment tools will also be considered as well as articles reporting on supportive activities and interventions within the study programmes. Articles related to exchange students or programmes will be excluded. Ethics and dissemination: No ethical approval is required. The findings of the review will be disseminated through peer-review publication as well as oral and poster presentations at scientific conferences.

Abstract:Background Many countries are becoming increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse due to globalisation and migration. The global shortage of nurses and the consequent migration of nursing professionals is leading to increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in health care and nursing education. Nurse educators play a significant role in supporting nursing students' competence and working life readiness. Research aim To describe nurse educators' experiences and perceptions regarding competence and competence development of CALD nursing students. Methods The study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach utilising individual thematic interviews for data collection. A purposive sample consisting of 20 volunteer nurse educators from five higher education institutions was used for the purpose. Data was collected in semi-structured interviews based on a literature review of previous studies. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. The COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research (COREQ) criteria were used in the reporting of this study. Results According to the content analysis, three main categories describing aspects related to the competence and competence development of CALD nursing students were identified: 1) educator's competence to support student's learning process and competence development, 2) development of supportive structures and safe learning environments, and 3) student-specific competence and competence development. The educators emphasised that setting clear goals, providing encouragement, having an open discussion, and student-centered approach to support their learning process and create a safe learning environment. Conclusions Supporting the learning process of CALD nursing students and developing safe learning environments were considered essential for the development of competence. These areas must be supported by developing educators' pedagogical and cultural competence and providing sufficient resources for both students and educators. In addition, the curriculum must be designed to support these aspects.

Value of Web-based learning activities for nursing students who speak English as a second language

Abstract:There is an increasing need to address the educational needs of students with English as a second language. The authors assessed the value of a Web-based activity to meet the needs of students with English as a second language in a bioscience subject. Using telephone contact, we interviewed 21 Chinese students, 24 non-Chinese students with English as a second language, and 7 native English-speaking students to identify the perception of the value of the intervention. Four themes emerged from the qualitative data: (1) Language is a barrier to achievement and affects self-confidence; (2) Enhancement intervention promoted autonomous learning; (3) Focusing on the spoken word increases interaction capacity and self-confidence; (4) Assessment and examination drive receptivity and sense of importance. Targeted strategies to promote language acculturation and acquisition are valued by students. Linking language acquisition skills to assessment tasks is likely to leverage improvements in competence.

Abstract:Background: Electronic learning (e-learning) is a broader approach to learning that opens up new avenues for studying and teaching in many sectors of education outside of the standard classroom setting. This paper might enhance cultural competence among nursing students and the perspective of the lecturer. Methods: Literature databases of Cinahl "Ebsco", Pubmed, and Science Direct were searched, and 326 potentially relevant nursing research articles were reviewed between 2017 and 2022. Fourteen papers were found to meet the inclusion criteria. Results: Fourteen articles were included for scoping review, themes include blended E-learning, nursing students' e-learning readiness, and The challenges with the E-learning system. First: Blended learning may be a beneficial educational strategy in nursing education but it also requires a cautious and carefully planned approach with sufficient time for each student. Second: E-readiness is an important component of academic success, and prospective e-learning users' capacity to use a new learning environment, as well as alternative technologies, is referred to as e-learning readiness. In addition, continuous readiness assessment is required to ensure the successful deployment of e-learning. Thirdly, Accessibility is the most significant challenge students experience; many other issues also challenge e-learning, such as Infrastructure, Ineffective Time Management, and a lack of Instant Communication. Conclusion: E-learning, on the other hand, can provide an alternate mode of education, blended learning Proven to be effective as a modern learning method, students' e-learning readiness was a significant predictor of their satisfaction and motivation in the classroom, there are still concerns about the instructional veracity of e-Learning, as well as how to analyze and overcome hurdles and fears in e-Learning. Implications: Specialized implications for practical ramifications include strategic management planning, curriculum enhancement, and raising standards at the lecturer level in several specific areas.
A mixed-methods national study investigating key challenges in learning English as a foreign language: A Chinese college student perspective

Abstract:Introduction: This mixed-methods national study has a two-fold purpose: (a) to invite Chinese college students to rate their overall difficulties in the eight areas of English learning, i.e., listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and culture; and (b) to invite them to identify their key challenges in learning EFL. Specifically, the following three research questions were asked: (a) what are their overall difficulties in the eight areas of learning EFL? (b) Are there significant differences in rating their overall difficulties in these eight areas across the demographic variables of gender (i.e., male versus female participants) and subject discipline (arts versus sciences versus English subject disciplines participants)? And (c) what are their key challenges in learning EFL? Methods: The participants included a sample of 1,525 freshmen and sophomore students currently studying at seven universities across China. The instrument was a survey that consisted of a five-point Likert scale self-evaluation form and a major essay question addressing their key challenges. The qualitative data can help to probe deeply into the research setting to obtain in-depth understandings about Chinese college students' English learning; and therefore, they can greatly enhance the quantitative data. Results and discussion: The quantitative results indicated that listening, speaking, and writing were their three key difficult areas in EFL learning; further, students' subject discipline (arts versus sciences verse English subject disciplines) had significant effects on their perceived learning challenges in English listening and vocabulary. The qualitative results confirmed that listening, speaking, and writing were their three key challenging areas. Their specific learning challenges in each area were examined. Implications for Chinese college English teachers and administrators are discussed in terms of pedagogy and policy making, respectively.
Embedded academic writing support for nursing students with English as a second language

Abstract:Aim: This paper reports a study which evaluated a brief, embedded academic support workshop as a strategy for improving academic writing skills in first-year nursing students with low-to-medium English language proficiency. Background: Nursing students who speak English as a second language have lower academic success compared with their native English-speaking counterparts. The development of academic writing skills is known to be most effective when embedded into discipline-specific curricula. Methods: Using a randomized controlled design, in 2008 106 students pre-enrolled in an introductory bioscience subject were randomized to receive either the intervention, a 4-day embedded academic learning support workshop facilitated by two bioscience (content) nursing academics and a writing and editing professional, or to act as the control group. The primary focus of the workshop was to support students to work through a mock assignment by providing progressive feedback and written suggestions on how to improve their answers. Results: Of the 59 students randomized to the intervention, only 28 attended the workshop. Bioscience assignment results were analysed for those who attended (attendees), those randomized to the intervention but who did not attend (non-attendees), and the control group. Using anova, the results indicated that attendees achieved statistically significantly higher mean scores (70.8, sd: 6.1) compared to both control group (58.4, sd: 3.4, P = 0.002) and non-attendees (48.5, sd: 5.5, P = 0.001). Conclusion: A brief, intensive, embedded academic support workshop was effective in improving the academic writing ability of nursing students with low-to-medium English language proficiency, although reaching all students who are likely to benefit from this intervention remains a challenge.
Challenges, coping responses and supportive interventions for international and migrant students in academic nursing programs in major host countries: a scoping review with a gender lens

Abstract:Abstract Background International and migrant students face specific challenges which may impact their mental health, well-being and academic outcomes, and these may be gendered experiences. The purpose of this scoping review was to map the literature on the challenges, coping responses and supportive interventions for international and migrant students in academic nursing programs in major host countries, with a gender lens. Methods We searched 10 databases to identify literature reporting on the challenges, coping responses and/or supportive interventions for international and migrant nursing students in college or university programs in Canada, the United-States, Australia, New Zealand or a European country. We included peer-reviewed research (any design), discussion papers and literature reviews. English, French and Spanish publications were considered and no time restrictions were applied. Drawing from existing frameworks, we critically assessed each paper and extracted information with a gender lens. Results One hundred fourteen publications were included. Overall the literature mostly focused on international students, and among migrants, migration history/status and length of time in country were not considered with regards to challenges, coping or interventions. Females and males, respectively, were included in 69 and 59% of studies with student participants, while those students who identify as other genders/sexual orientations were not named or identified in any of the research. Several papers suggest that foreign-born nursing students face challenges associated with different cultural roles, norms and expectations for men and women. Other challenges included perceived discrimination due to wearing a hijab and being a ‘foreign-born male nurse’, and in general nursing being viewed as a feminine, low-status profession. Only two strategies, accessing support from family and other student mothers, used by women to cope with challenges, were identified. Supportive interventions considering gender were limited; these included matching students with support services' personnel by sex, involving male family members in admission and orientation processes, and using patient simulation as a method to prepare students for care-provision of patients of the opposite-sex. Conclusion Future work in nursing higher education, especially regarding supportive interventions, needs to address the intersections of gender, gender identity/sexual orientation and foreign-born status, and also consider the complexity of migrant students’ contexts.

The impact of simulation-based learning on students' English for Nursing Purposes (ENP) reading proficiency: a quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Aim: This is a report of a study which evaluated simulation-based learning as a teaching strategy for improving participants' ENP reading proficiency in the senior college program of students whose first language is Chinese, not English. Background: Simulation-based learning is known to be one of most effective teaching strategies in the healthcare professional curricula, which brings a clinical setting into the classroom. However, developing English reading skills for English written nursing journals through simulation-based learning in the nursing curricula, is largely unknown. Method: We used a quasi-experimental approach with nonequivalent control group design to collect the causal connections between intervention and outcomes. 101 students were enrolled in this study (response rate 92.6%) of these 48 students volunteered for the intervention group, and 53 students for the control group. Results: The findings indicated that the intervention group had significantly higher mean scores in ENP reading proficiency with unknown words in the article (p=.004), vocabulary (p<.001), and comprehension (p<.001) compared to the control group. Also, the intervention students showed more improvement in their English reading, both from quantitative and qualitative findings. Conclusion: Simulation-based learning may have some advantages in improving the English reading ability on English written nursing journals among nursing students. However, the benefits to the students of this study is still to be determined, and further exploration is needed with well designed research and a universal method of outcome measurement.

Abstract:AIM: With nursing education reform calling for greater numbers of graduates from diverse backgrounds, this study explored the experiences of students who identified as English language learners (ELs).BACKGROUND: Educators may view students from underrepresented groups at the margins of nursing education. Minimal research on the experiences of students identifying as ELs exists.METHOD: Interpretive phenomenological and critical methodologies were used to explore students' lived experiences in the nursing classroom.RESULTS: Academic progress involved additional time and effort dedicated to learning English and the languages of health care and nursing. Traditional and monocultural pedagogical practices, representing acts of power and dominance, thwarted learning. Yet students made progress despite less effective pedagogical practices and socioeconomic realities. This inquiry began with one notion of identity, "English-learners," but evolved to students' perceptions of "being-in-the-world," wholeness, and future endeavors.CONCLUSION: This study counters the dominant view that students without a greater command of English are not ready for the rigors of nursing education.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:The aim of this review was to synthesize qualitative evidence on nursing students' experiences with service learning (SL). DESIGN:A systematic review. DATA SOURCES:Comprehensive searches were performed using databases including PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINHAL (EBSCO), ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, Web of Science, Wangfang (Chinese), CNKI (Chinese), Google Scholar, and Baidu Scholar (Chinese). REVIEW METHODS:The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. We conducted a meta-aggregation to synthesize the findings of the included studies. The Confidence in the Output of Qualitative Research Synthesis (ConQual) approach was used to assess confidence in the synthesized findings. RESULTS:Forty-two studies were identified, and 39 studies were included in the meta-aggregation. One hundred and sixty-seven findings, 16 categories, and 6 synthesized findings were identified. The six synthesized findings identified from the 39 studies concerned the following topics: adaption and emotion shifting, knowledge translation and skills development, leadership and collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, cultural sensitivity, discovery of nursing roles and professional growth, and overall appraisal and suggestions. CONCLUSIONS:We recommend empowering nursing students by developing their self-confidence in their leadership abilities and their identities before they participate in SL programs. During SL, educators should provide sufficient space for students and should not become involved in students' teams to avoid decreasing their self-confidence in their leadership abilities. After SL programs, maintaining long-term relationships between the university and the community is a prerequisite for students working smoothly in the community and is a key factor for program sustainability.

Abstract:A new pyranonaphthoquinone derivative, named 4-oxo-rhinacanthin A (1), was isolated from the roots of the Indonesian Rhinacanthus nasutus together with two known congeners, rhinacanthin A (2) and 3,4-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-2H-naphtho[2,3-b]pyran-5,10-dione (3). The structure of 1 was elucidated based on its spectroscopic data. The absolute configuration of 1 was assigned by comparing its experimental Electronic Circular Dichroism (ECD) spectrum with the calculated ECD spectrum. Compounds 2 and 3 inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with inhibition zones of 16 and 20 mm at 25 µg/disc, respectively. Compound 3 also exhibited inhibitory activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis (20 mm at 25 µg/disc).
Nursing students' experiences of digital learning in Chinese higher education institutions: A descriptive qualitative study

Abstract:Background: As digital learning is rapidly developing and being applied to almost all subjects in higher education nursing. Although digital learning has been shown to have a wide range of benefits, little is known about research into Chinese students' perceptions of digital learning, and there is a need to explore students' digital learning experiences. Aim: This study aimed to explore the digital learning experiences of undergraduate nursing students in Chinese higher education institutions, with the aim of informing future improvements in digital teaching and learning. Design: A descriptive qualitative study. Settings: This study was conducted at six universities in three cities in China. Participants: Twenty-six nursing students with at least one year's experience of digital learning. Method: Semi-structured online interviews were used to collect the data, and conventional content analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings: Nursing students' digital learning experiences were categorized into three themes: positive digital learning experience, negative digital learning experience, and barriers to digital learning perception of students. Conclusions: With the help of advanced digital technology, students can access rich and diversified learning resources anytime and anywhere according to their personal learning pace and interests, which greatly enhances their autonomy and interest in learning. Open online courses have effectively compensated for regional differences in teachers' qualifications, enabling students in remote areas to enjoy high-quality teaching from top educational institutions and giving a solid impetus for improving nursing education in China. However, with the popularity of digital teaching, its design and innovation shortcomings have gradually emerged: students feel lonely and alienated when learning online, and long for more of the interaction and care found in traditional teaching. At the same time, the lack of regulation and assessment standards has created inequities in learning and affected student motivation.

Abstract:With the mounting reports of culturally insensitive care and the reported challenges nurses experience when caring for culturally diverse patients, developing the intercultural readiness of nursing students is a necessity. However, little is known as to the success of cultural competence educational interventions in undergraduate nursing curricula and there remains a lack of consensus within the literature as to how it should be structured, organised and facilitated. Incorporating an integrative review method, this study synthesised international research on educational interventions used in preparing student nurses to care for culturally diverse patients. A systematic literature search of all published studies between 2013 and 2017, in CINAHL, Scopus, Medline, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Education Source and PsycINFO databases were performed. The PRISMA checklist was used to guide the review process. Six hundred and twenty-four studies were screened for eligibility and the analysis of the fourteen included studies are presented within two overarching themes; increasing knowledge and understanding and developing commitment and confidence. Engaging student nurses in learning activities that augment their understanding of, and commitment to, providing culturally competent care must include a variety of integrated culturally responsive pedagogical approaches made explicit and continuously developed across all learning opportunities.

Abstract:AIM to report a thematic synthesis of students' narratives in free text comments from a national quality survey of Australian nursing degree students' clinical placements. BACKGROUND Nursing student evaluation surveys are submitted to the Australian National Placement Evaluation Centre. Students in 36 Australian nursing programs are included. DESIGN Thematic synthesis of nursing students' narrative comments. METHODS Data were sourced from 10,226 surveys submitted between July and December 2023. From these, the 3,640 free text comments were extracted and tabulated to form the sample for synthesis. Three authors conducted a thematic synthesis and all five authors agreed on the findings. FINDINGS Student's comments generally portrayed a positive learning culture in clinical placement environments. One dominant theme 'Support' was interpreted as giving deeper meaning to students' perceptions of the help and encouragement of placement facility staff. Three subthemes 'Welcoming environment', 'Providing learning opportunities' and 'Teaching strategies' described students' ideas of what elements contribute to learning. Ten ways of teaching were revealed in students' narratives as education activities. Students commonly referred to staff supporters, illustrating that various staff worked to ensure students were supervised during clinical skills practice and that students' learning objectives were addressed. CONCLUSIONS Staff-student relationships are paramount for students' learning and students' narratives revealed a perceptions of a generally positive learning environment. The notion of support is implied as vital to nursing students' positive experience of clinical learning during placements. Curriculum designers, university course convenors and placement partners may use the findings identified in this study to ensure academic and placement facility staff are aware of how best to support students. In this way, institutions may narrow the gap between successful and less successful nursing student clinical placements.
