Abstract:Aim: To determine the effect of serious games on undergraduate nursing students by the meta-analysis method. Background: There is a need for greater focus on enhancing the knowledge and skills of undergraduate nursing students. Generation Z students desire active engagement in the learning process. When compare with conventional learning approaches, serious games can enhance pupil interest by making the learning process more captivating. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Method: A total of nine databases were systematically searched from inception to April 2024. The Cochrane RoB-2 tool and the Joanna Brigg's Institute Critical Appraisal Tool for quasi-experimental designs were used to undertake quality appraisal. A narrative synthesis, a meta-analysis and subgroup analysis were conducted to analyze the study outcomes. Results: In the study, 19 experimental studies included 14 randomized controlled trials and five quasi-experimental studies. When compare with control groups, serious games in RCTs showed significant improvements in knowledge (SMD 1.24, 95 % CI 0.52-1.96; P<0.001) and skills (SMD 0.50, 95 % CI 0.13-0.87; P<0.01). Subgroup analysis for technical skills outcomes demonstrated that serious games in RCTs were more effective than control groups (SMD 0.62, 95 % CI 0.20-1.05; P<0.001). Conclusion: Serious games had a beneficial impact on the knowledge and skills of undergraduate nursing students. In the context of serious game intervention, it is imperative to carefully consider the approach.
The effects of flipped learning and gamification on nursing students' patient safety education: A mixed method study

Abstract:Background: The importance of enhancing education to promote nursing students' patient safety competency is increasing. Hence, implementing diverse educational programs and assessing their outcomes is essential. Objectives: To examine the effects of flipped learning and gamification on nursing students' patient safety education. Design: A mixed-method design employing a quasi-experimental design with a pre-post control group design and qualitative thematic analysis. Methods: The study was conducted at a South Korean university in W City from September to December 2022. It included 55 s-year nursing students. The experimental group (n = 28) participated in a 30-h patient safety education course using flipped learning and gamification, whereas the control group (n = 27) received only written patient safety education materials. Learning motivation, collective efficacy, patient safety competency, and game evaluations were measured. Data were analyzed using the χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, repeated-measures multivariate analysis of covariance, repeated measure analysis of covariance, and generalized estimating equations. Self-reflection journals on game participation experiences were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. Results: Learning motivation scores did not differ significantly between groups for time, or interactions between groups and time, but collective efficacy and patient safety competency scores showed significant differences in the interactions between groups and time. The experimental group showed a high satisfaction score in game evaluation. Qualitative analyses were used to extract four themes-three positives: "fun and immersion differentiated from existing classes," "improved the learning outcomes and learning motivation," and "realized the value of collaboration and communication," and one negative: "feeling down due to unfamiliarity." Conclusions: This program creates positive learning experiences and enhances nursing students' collective efficacy and patient-safety competencies. It is expected to be utilized in various future nursing courses.
Effectiveness of gamification in nursing degree education

Abstract:Background Previous research in nursing has found favorable results from the use of teaching methodologies alternative to lectures. One of the complementary methodologies used for university teaching is gamification, or the inclusion of game elements, creating a dynamic learning environment that allows the acquisition of knowledge and the development of other skills necessary for nursing students. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a gamification session on student satisfaction and knowledge scores in nursing students in simulated laboratory practice. Methods A pre-post quasi-experimental study was conducted with 122 students from the nursing degree program who participated in the research. The evaluation consisted of four sessions of three hours each. In two sessions, participants were trained through a vertical methodology, by means of theoretical training provided by teaching staff, and two hours of clinical simulation, where the students were able to practice the techniques on professional simulators. At the other two sessions, participants received an explanation of the theoretical aspects of the session, one hour of clinical simulation, and one hour of gamification, in which they had to pass tests based on the performance of practical activities on the subject of the session. At the end of the gamification session, all the participants received a certificate as winners of the “nursing game”. Results There was an improvement in the satisfaction and the knowledge level in the gamification sessions. Both were statistically significant ( P < 0.001). There was an improvement in the items related to the development of critical thinking and the mobilizing concepts from theory to practice in the gamification sessions. Conclusion The intervention was effective in improving the satisfaction of the sessions received and in knowledge development.

Abstract:Background: Gamified reward systems, such as providing digital badges earned for specific accomplishments, are related to student engagement in educational settings. The purpose of this study was to conduct a meta-analytic review to quantify the effects of gamified interventions on student behavioral change. Methods: A meta-analysis was performed using the following databases: The Academic Search Complete, Communication & Mass Media Complete, Education Source, ERIC, Library Information Science & Technology Abstracts, and PsycINFO. Inclusion in the review required: (a) peer-reviewed conducted between 2010 and 2019, (b) experimental controlled design, (c) gamification elements, and (d) educational setting. Results: Using a random-effects model, a statistically significant (Cohen’s d (ES) = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.33, 0.62) gamification effect was evidenced by moderate and positive grand effects sizes (ES). Gamification effects were higher with adults in higher education (ES = 0.95) than K-12 students (ES = 0.92). Brief interventions delivered in days or less than 1 week were significantly more effective (ES = 1.57) than interventions lasting up to 20 weeks (ES = 0.30). Interventions incorporating gamification elements across years (ES = −0.20) was adversely associated with behavioral change. Conclusions: Findings suggest that short-term over longer-term gamified interventions might be a promising way to initiate changes in learner’s behaviors and improve learning outcome.

Abstract:Gamification research in educational settings has produced mixed results on student learning outcomes. Educational researchers and practitioners both struggle with identifying when, where, and how to use gamification design concepts. The present study provides findings from a meta-analysis that integrated the empirical, quantitative research on gamification in formal educational settings on student learning outcomes. This was achieved by examining the overall effect size, identifying which gamification design elements (e.g., badges) were used, and determining under what circumstances (e.g., engineering education) gamification works. The final corpus of data included 30 independent studies and associated effect sizes comparing gamification to non-gamification conditions while accounting for N = 3083 participants. The overall effect size using a random-effects model is g = .464 [.244 to .684] in favor of the gamification condition, which is a small to medium effect size. We examined 14 different gamification design elements (e.g., leaderboards) and showed that each leads to different effects on student learning outcomes. Further, the type of publication (e.g., journal article), student classification (e.g., undergraduate), and subject area (e.g., mathematics) are also investigated as moderators. We provide a discussion of our findings, some recommendations for future research, and some brief closing remarks.
Gamification of health professions education: a systematic review

Abstract:Gamification refers to using game attributes in a non-gaming context. Health professions educators increasingly turn to gamification to optimize students' learning outcomes. However, little is known about the concept of gamification and its possible working mechanisms. This review focused on empirical evidence for the effectiveness of gamification approaches and theoretical rationales for applying the chosen game attributes. We systematically searched multiple databases, and included all empirical studies evaluating the use of game attributes in health professions education. Of 5044 articles initially identified, 44 met the inclusion criteria. Negative outcomes for using gamification were not reported. Almost all studies included assessment attributes (n = 40), mostly in combination with conflict/challenge attributes (n = 27). Eight studies revealed that this specific combination had increased the use of the learning material, sometimes leading to improved learning outcomes. A relatively small number of studies was performed to explain mechanisms underlying the use of game attributes (n = 7). Our findings suggest that it is possible to improve learning outcomes in health professions education by using gamification, especially when employing game attributes that improve learning behaviours and attitudes towards learning. However, most studies lacked well-defined control groups and did not apply and/or report theory to understand underlying processes. Future research should clarify mechanisms underlying gamified educational interventions and explore theories that could explain the effects of these interventions on learning outcomes, using well-defined control groups, in a longitudinal way. In doing so, we can build on existing theories and gain a practical and comprehensive understanding of how to select the right game elements for the right educational context and the right type of student.

Abstract:Gamification has been introduced in the nursing curriculum as one of the newest and most innovative teaching methods by blending the games with the concepts. In this method, they are applying the game elements in a non-game environment. Evidence cited in the empirical research shows that it increases students' class engagement, motivation, problem-solving ability, and competencies to a large extent. However, not many research studies have been conducted exploring the impact of gamification on the teaching and learning of nursing subjects. 1) Identify the application of gamification as an innovative teaching-learning strategy in nursing curriculum 2) Explore the student satisfaction, motivation, and class engagement while using gamification as a learning method 3) Impact of gamification on the academic performance of nursing students. A literature search was conducted using online databases available in Google Scholar, PubMed, Medline, Science Direct, and ProQuest. The studies included were descriptive surveys, systematic reviews, quasi-experimental, and mixed research methods. The key search concepts explored were 'Gamification and nursing education', 'gamified as a learning tool in nursing education', 'gamification and academic outcomes of nursing students', and 'gamification as a teaching strategy in nursing education'. The available evidence from the research studies indicates positive results in using gamification can be a used as a learning strategy and shows that it can bring about increased class engagement, clarification and understanding of difficult concepts, and improve interaction and communication in nursing courses. However, challenges remain in terms of lack of clarity on the competencies to be examined the learning outcomes and the efficacy of its application in the professional field, and the underlying costs. Gamification can be introduced as an innovative technology in the teaching-learning process. Further studies are required to provide more evidence in its application to various nursing courses and the learning outcomes to be examined.
The Effects of Gamification on Computerized Cognitive Training: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background There has been a growing interest in the application of gamification (ie, the use of game elements) to computerized cognitive training. The introduction of targeted gamification features to such tasks may increase motivation and engagement as well as improve intervention effects. However, it is possible that game elements can also have adverse effects on cognitive training (eg, be a distraction), which can outweigh their potential motivational benefits. So far, little is known about the effectiveness of such applications. Objective This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of gamification on process outcomes (eg, motivation) and on changes in the training domain (eg, cognition), as well as to explore the role of potential moderators. Methods We searched PsycINFO, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, ProQuest Psychology, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, Excerpta Medica dataBASE, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Xplore, Association for Computing Machinery, and a range of gray-area literature databases. The searches included papers published between 2008 and 2018. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model. Results The systematic review identified 49 studies, of which 9 randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the review indicated that research in this context is still developing and lacks well-controlled empirical studies. Gamification in cognitive training is applied to a large range of age groups and audiences and is mostly delivered at a research site through computers. Rewards and feedback continue to dominate the gamification landscape, whereas social-oriented features (eg, competition) are underused. The meta-analyses showed that gamified training tasks were more motivating/engaging (Hedges g=0.72) and more demanding/difficult (Hedges g=–0.52) than non- or less-gamified tasks, whereas no effects on the training domain were found. Furthermore, no variables moderated the impact of gamified training tasks. However, meta-analytic findings were limited due to a small number of studies. Conclusions Overall, this review provides an overview of the existing research in the domain and provides evidence for the effectiveness of gamification in improving motivation/engagement in the context of cognitive training. We discuss the shortcomings in the current literature and provide recommendations for future research.

The Influence of Gamification on Decision Making in Nursing Students

Abstract:Background: Gamification provides nursing students with a setting in which they can practice clinical reasoning and decision making in a realistic and secure way. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of gamification on decision making in nursing students. Method: A quasi-experimental study was performed with a control group and an experimental group. A convenience sample was used to select the participants. A total of 191 nursing students participated. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the groups. Results: On comparing the control group and experimental group, statistically significant differences were found in the following patterns: vigilance, buck passing, and procrastination. Conclusion: Using gamification as part of nursing education increases satisfaction, creative thinking, and control, among other aspects, with little to no negative effects throughout the experience, which has a significant impact on decision making. The effectiveness of serious games in nursing education: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies

Abstract:Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the effects of randomized controlled trials using serious gaming in nursing education on knowledge, skills, and confidence. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Data sources: Randomized controlled trials published in English in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library databases between 2000 and 2023. Review methods: Quality assessment was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool for Assessment of Risk of Bias for Randomized Controlled Trials and the review was reported according to the PRISMA-2020 protocol. The review was conducted by two independent reviewers. Result: As a result of the database review, a total of 1886 studies were found and 8 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The use of serious games was found to have a low to moderate effect on the knowledge levels of nursing students (Hedge's g = 0.492; 95 % CI = -0.094-1.078), and a moderate effect on their skill (Hedge's g = 0.756; 95 % CI = 0.505-1.003) and self confidence levels (Hedge's g = 0.698; p = 0.362, 95 % CI = -0.801-2.196). The heterogeneity of the studies was found to be high for knowledge (I2 = 92 %), skill (I2 = 71.5 %) and self confidence (I2 = 95.9 %), and low for knowledge (p = 0.90; p = 0.29) and skill (p = 0.75; p = 0.69) in terms of bias analyses egger regression test and begg and mazumdar test, respectively. Conclusion: The reviewed studies revealed that the use of serious games in nursing education has positive effects on knowledge, skills and self-confidence. In order to increase the reliability of the evidence, there is a need to increase the number of welldesigned randomized controlled trials using serious games and to examine the effects of these results in clinical practice with larger sample groups.
Gamification design to increase motivation in online learning environments: A systematic review

Abstract:Lack of learner motivation is one of the problems that can be encountered in online learning settings. Gamification can be offered as a possible solution to the motivational problems in online learning environments. In this regard, this study aims to give a general idea of gamification studies focusing on motivation in online learning and to provide practical suggestions on designing gamification. In order to access relevant studies, Web of Science Core Collection database was reviewed. In total, 90 articles in SSCI index journals have been systematically analyzed and 10 of them meeting the inclusion criteria were reviewed in detail. While one of those studies revealed no significant effect of gamification on motivation, the rest of them showed that gamification is effective in fostering students’ motivation. This review provides a general overview about the effect of gamification on motivation and suggestions for future implications such as including badges or points to show competence, using competitive and collaborative elements together, preparing different types of leaderboards, providing students with immediate and automated feedback, giving students challenges suitable for their skills, developing adaptive gamification systems for different learner needs, and eliminating technical problems.
The role of gamified learning strategies in student's motivation in high school and higher education: A systematic review

Abstract:Gamification, defined as the integration of videogame components to promote a gameful experience, is increasingly being implemented in education with the aim of enhancing students' engagement and motivation. Accordingly, since 2010 it has constituted an area of growing interest for researchers and teachers. Following PRISMA 2020's methodology, a systematic review (SR) was conducted in November 2022 seeking to explore the influence of gamification strategies on students' motivation to learn. Having identified 548 articles, 40 studies were chosen based on the selection criteria set and analyzed to reveal that game elements such as points, badges and rankings are widely used to motivate students. From a theoretical perspective, gamification studies focus on the dichotomy of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The results suggest a positive influence of gamification strategies on students' motivation, although in the long run, such motivation can decline. Furthermore, the influence of a novelty effect and extrinsic rewards on motivation is identified, which can lead to greater motivation in the short term, followed by a decrease with further exposure to gamification. Future studies should focus on the influence of students' individual traits (e.g., gaming experience, openness to competition and cooperation) on gamification strategies. Moreover, long-term exposure to gamification as well as the novelty effect should be explored.
Examining the effectiveness of gamification as a tool promoting teaching and learning in educational settings: a meta-analysis

Abstract:The integration of gamification into educational settings has gained recognition for its potential to boost student motivation, engagement, interest, and learning outcomes. Despite its popularity, research on gamification has produced mixed results regarding student learning outcomes. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize the existing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of gamification as a tool for promoting teaching and learning in educational settings. Forty-one studies with 49 independent samples involving more than 5,071 participants were included in our analysis. Results from random effects models showed an overall significant large effect size ( g = 0.822 [0.567 to 1.078]). The research performed the moderator analysis to scrutinize the effects of a number of factors on the relationship between gamification and student learning outcomes. The study uncovered significant moderating effects for user type, educational discipline, design principles for educational gamification, duration of "gameful" experience, and learning environment. However, measurement of student outcomes and publication type did not appear to have any significant moderating effect. Those findings hold important implications for improving and implementing gamification to promote teaching and learning in future research.

The use and impact of game-based learning on the learning experience and knowledge retention of nursing undergraduate students: A systematic literature review

Abstract:Background: Active engagement of nursing students has deteriorated overtime, especially during the global pandemic. Therefore, there has been a widespread search for learning methods that incorporate digital technologies and active student participation in recent years. Game-based learning may be an option, as it uses game-design elements to enhance academic performance and learning. Its use in nursing education is, however, limited. Objectives: The literature review aimed to explore student experience and learning when using game-based learning and to understand its uses in the nursing curriculum. Design: Systematic literature review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis. Data sources: ESBCO Discovery Service was used to search healthcare, science and education-related databases. Review methods: A comprehensive search of English language primary research published between 2017 and 2022 on the use of game-based learning in nursing undergraduate education was conducted. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Seventeen papers from 4 different countries were included. The studies explored interventions and subjects of increased teaching complexity that required increased levels of knowledge retention and critical thinking, such as nursing theory and complex clinical skills. Three themes emerged from the literature, including: approaches to game-based learning; student experience and engagement; impact of game-based learning on student learning and knowledge retention. Studies used a wide range of learning methods, such as quizzes, escape rooms and serious games. These methods were in general well-accepted by students, who endorsed its widespread use in the nursing curriculum. Most studies reported an increase in student experience and learning when using game-based learning, although time-limited games can often increase anxiety on students. Conclusions: Game-based learning is an important alternative to traditional teaching methods. However, the recurrent use of game elements and its limited long-term effects may pose a limitation to its widespread use in nursing undergraduate education.

Active Learning in Higher Education

Abstract:Self-determination theory (SDT) has empirical support in understanding and enhancing motivation in a variety of contexts, including education settings. Niemac and Ryan have highlighted that using SDT in course design can lead to stronger fulfilment of an internal locus of causality regarding course work. One course design method anchored in SDT is gameful learning—structuring tasks that support intrinsic motivation, primarily increasing autonomy over learning. A gamified classroom (GC) may offer more assignments and points than minimally necessary for students to earn a passing mark, allowing students choice in which projects to pursue. Further research is needed to examine the degree to which students’ motivations differ between a GC and a non-gamified classroom (NGC). The purpose of the current study was to determine if students in a GC were more intrinsically motivated than students in NGC. Students were enrolled in an undergraduate kinesiology course using a GC design ( n = 24) or NGC design ( n = 26) and completed an online survey – derived from the intrinsic motivation inventory and the test anxiety questionnaire—at the beginning and end of the semester. In the GC, students started with zero points, and were offered multiple assignments with scaffolded difficulty to reach their desired grade. The NGC used a traditional 100% grade range, with only required assignments and exams, and students lost points for inadequate or inaccurate responses. Following analyses, it was revealed that students in the GC had higher perceptions of autonomy and competence than students in the NGC. Where these differences exist over time, along with differences in other subscales, will be discussed further. Educators seeking to enhance student motivation and engagement may therefore look to gamification as an appropriate methodology.

Abstract:The Principle of the Argument is applied to test the stability of a 2-D recursive filter with denominator B(Z 1 ,Z 2 ). This approach to stability testing leads to an efficient numerical implementation requiring only the computation of a 2-D DFT, followed by phase unwrapping and a search for zeros of B(e^{j\omega_{1}},e^{j\omega_{2}}) . In the absence of zeros of B(e^{j\omega_{1}},e^{j\omega_{2}}) , stability is assured if B(Z 1 ,1) and B(1,z 2 ) are both minimum phase.

Results from random effects models showed significant small effects of gamification on cognitive (g = .49, 95% CI [0.30, 0.69], k = 19, N = 1686), motivational (g = .36, 95% CI [0.18, 0.54], k = 16, N = 2246), and behavioral learning outcomes (g = .25, 95% CI [0.04, 0.46], k = 9, N = 951). Whereas the effect of gamification on cognitive learning outcomes was stable in a subsplit analysis of studies employing high methodological rigor, effects on motivational and behavioral outcomes were less stable. Given the heterogeneity of effect sizes, moderator analyses were conducted to examine inclusion of game fiction, social interaction, learning arrangement of the comparison group, as well as situational, contextual, and methodological moderators, namely, period of time, research context, randomization, design, and instruments. Inclusion of game fiction and social interaction were significant moderators of the effect of gamification on behavioral learning outcomes. Inclusion of game fiction and combining competition with collaboration were particularly effective within gamification for fostering behavioral learning outcomes. Results of the subsplit analysis indicated that effects of competition augmented with collaboration might also be valid for motivational learning outcomes. The results suggest that gamification as it is currently operationalized in empirical studies is an effective method for instruction, even though factors contributing to successful gamification are still somewhat unresolved, especially for cognitive learning outcomes.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Students constantly seek ways to improve productivity within academia. With the advancement of technology in the recent decade, virtual implementations may provide additional support for student productivity, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic with online learning. One of the virtual realms for motivation include gamification, which has potential as an effective tool to further bolster an individual's source of intrinsic motivation.METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative studies were extracted from APA PsycInfo, ProQuest, and IEEE for relevance to virtual gamification and intrinsic motivation. Studies were reviewed based on a pre-determined and piloted screening tool. Included studies were published between 1990 and 2020 in English within Asia, North America, or Europe. Only systematic reviews, randomized control trials (RCTs), meta-analysis, and grey literature were included. Study screening, extraction, and quality appraisals using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) were performed independently among two authors. Disagreements following reconciliation between two authors were settled by a third author. Heterogeneity in study designs, outcomes, and measurements precluded meta and statistical analyses; thus, a qualitative analysis of studies was provided.RESULTS: Based on the appraised articles, gamification improves intrinsic motivation through badges, social interactions, points, and leaderboards. Experimental studies also displayed a correlation between learning behaviour.CONCLUSION: The data exhibited an increase in intrinsic motivation due to gamification features, which can be integrated within a virtual context to enhance motivation with potential for application towards online learning settings.

Abstract:Controversy surrounds the effectiveness of educational gamification on learners’ motivation to study. Prior papers attempting to summarize the available empirical evidence on the topic encompass too many additional domains like the academic performance so that the motivational point is discentrated. Hence, the current meta-analysis aimed to synthesize research findings limited to the clearly stated impact of gamification on higher education students’ academic motivation. Results from random effects proportion meta-analysis applied to seven relevant studies with a total of 368 students showed a pooled proportion of 29.68%. In other words, game design elements incorporated into the learning activities were significantly motivating for only about one-third of participants. The assumption of homogeneity was violated for certain reasons. As part of the discussion, previous scholars’ efforts to identify moderating factors of successful gamification were overviewed, and their practicality was questioned. It is concluded that the issue of whether educational gamification can amplify students’ learning motivation remains an area for further research.
Assessing the effects of gamification in the classroom: A longitudinal study on intrinsic motivation, social comparison, satisfaction, effort, and academic performance

Abstract:Gamification, the application of game elements to non-game settings, continues to grow in popularity as a method to increase student engagement in the classroom. We tested students across two courses, measuring their motivation, social comparison, effort, satisfaction, learner empowerment, and academic performance at four points during a 16-week semester. One course received a gamified curriculum, featuring a leaderboard and badges, whereas the other course received the same curriculum without the gamified elements. Our results found that students in the gamified course showed less motivation, satisfaction, and empowerment over time than those in the non-gamified class. The effect of course type on students' final exam scores was mediated by students' levels of intrinsic motivation, with students in the gamified course showing less motivation and lower final exam scores than the non-gamified class. This suggests that some care should be taken when applying certain gamification mechanics to educational settings.
