Abstract:BackgroundSince its inception colectomy has routinely been performed in the inpatient setting. The advent of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols has led improved outcomes, including decreased length of stay (LOS). These improvements have introduced the possibility of ambulatory colectomy. However, indications, protocols, and limitations of ambulatory colectomy have not been extensively explored.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review on ambulatory colectomies performed between February 2019 and August 2021. Patients were candidates for same day discharge (SDD) if they met rigorous preoperative criteria. Following an uncomplicated operation, strict postoperative parameters were required for safe discharge. If the patient underwent SDD following their operation, they were monitored closely via telehealth visits and/or patient communication messages until their one-week postoperative visit.ResultsFrom our review, we identified sixty-nine (n = 69) patients who underwent SDD after colectomy. Of the 69, only one patient was readmitted after discharge (1.4%). All procedures were performed via a robotic-assisted approach (Da Vinci Xi). None of the patients underwent conversion to an open procedure. The most frequently performed procedures included: low anterior resection (LAR) (n = 32, 46.4%) and right hemicolectomy (n = 11, 15.9%).ConclusionThrough proper patient education and strictly defined communication between the patient care teams, safe and effective care in the setting of SDD after colectomy can be provided. With recent technological advancements, enhanced mechanisms for patient education throughout all phases, and emerging means of patient-physician communication, via the data included herein the opportunity for same day discharge (SDD) after colectomy is a feasible and safe management plan in the proper patient.
Integration of routine vaccination and hygiene interventions: a comparison of 2 strategies in Kenya.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Hygiene interventions reduce child mortality from diarrhea. Vaccination visits provide a platform for delivery of other health services but may overburden nurses. We compared 2 strategies to integrate hygiene interventions with vaccinations in Kenya's Homa Bay district, 1 using community workers to support nurses and 1 using nurses. METHODS Homa Bay was divided into 2 geographical areas, each with 9 clinics. Each area was randomly assigned to either the nurse or community-assisted strategy. At infant vaccination visits hygiene kits were distributed by the nurse or community member. Surveys pre- and post-intervention, measured hygiene indicators and vaccination coverage. Interviews and focus groups assessed acceptability. RESULTS Between April 2009 and March 2010, 39 158 hygiene kits were distributed. Both nurse and community-assisted strategies were well-accepted. Hygiene indicators improved similarly in nurse and community sites. However, residual chlorine in water changed in neither group. Vaccination coverage increased in urban areas. In rural areas coverage either remained unchanged or increased with 1 exception (13% third dose poliovirus vaccine decrease). CONCLUSIONS Distribution of hygiene products and education during vaccination visits was found to be feasible using both delivery strategies. Additional studies should consider assessing the use of community members to support integrated service delivery.

Abstract:Aim Same day discharge (SDD) for colorectal surgery shows increasing promise in the era of enhanced recovery after surgery protocols and minimally invasive surgery. It has become increasingly relevant due to the constraints posed by the COVID‐19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to compare SDD and postoperative day 1 (POD1) discharge to understand the clinical outcomes and financial impact on factors such as cost, charge, revenue, contribution margin and readmission. Method A retrospective review of colectomies was performed at a single institution over a 2‐year period (n = 143). Two populations were identified: SDD (n = 51) and POD1 (n = 92). Abstract:Background With the advent of minimally invasive techniques and enhanced recovery pathways, outpatient surgery is becoming increasingly common, but has not yet been extensively described in liver surgery. The aim of the present study was to analyze the incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of patients undergoing outpatient hepatectomy in the US. Methods We utilized the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database for patients who underwent laparoscopic or robotic, elective hepatectomy from 2014 to 2021. Patients discharged on postoperative day 0 were assigned to the "same‐day discharge" group, otherwise the patient was considered "admitted." Postoperative outcomes were compared with propensity‐matched analysis. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify predictors of postoperative LOS (length of stay). Results We identified 7279 patients, of which 361 were in the same‐day discharge cohort and 6918 were in the admitted cohort. For admitted patients, median postoperative length of stay was three days (SD = 6). Same‐day discharge patients tended to be younger (age 59 vs. 62, p = .034) and more often ASA class ≤2 (49% vs. 29%, p .9), 30‐day readmission (p = .2), and overall postoperative complication rate (p = .2). Predictors of longer postoperative LOS included longer operative time, inpatient hospital status, preoperative transfusion, dependent functional status, and use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion Our results indicate that for low‐risk patients and uncomplicated cases, same‐day discharge after minimally invasive, elective hepatectomy is feasible without compromising patient safety and outcomes.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION To review the post-RASC course of women admitted for 23 hours post-RASC and identify events requiring intensive medical care or potentially leading to deleterious outcome or urgent readmission if that patient had same-day discharge (SDD) instead of observed overnight. METHODS Patients undergoing RASC from January-December 2020 at one institution were identified and relevant data was obtained via retrospective chart review. Patient exclusions: RASC start time after 12:00 PM, concurrent posterior colporrhaphy, rectopexy, or hysterectomy, or conversion to open. RESULTS Sixty-nine patients (median age 71 years old) met study criteria with majority ASA class 2 (n=46, 67%) or 3 (n=22, 32%). Patient characteristics included: prior abdominal surgeries (n=58, 84%), prior hysterectomy/prolapse repair (n=25, 37%), known allergy to pain medication (n=25, 36%), and administration of a post-operative anti-emetic (n=37, 54%) or intra/post-operative keterolac (n=36, 52%). Median surgery length was 269 minutes. Post-operative events that may have resulted in urgent readmissions if they had SDD were observed in 6% of patients. In the first week post-RASC, there were no readmissions. CONCLUSIONS In this limited quality assurance study, patients undergoing RASC experienced no major complications requiring intensive care. Post-operative events were almost entirely nausea and pain, with no readmissions within the first week.

Abstract:Objective: Develop a 'same-day discharge' setting for laparoscopic treatment of adnexal disease. Setting: Preventive Gynecology, European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy. Population: Two hundred patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures. Material and methods: Data were retrospectively collected through clinical, surgical and laboratory reports. After discharge patients were contacted by phone and e-mail. Main outcome measures: The rate of discharge, adverse events and readmission was measured. The need for adjunctive care provided by our on-call service or by a primary care physician and the acceptability of the same-day discharge protocol were also investigated. Results: One hundred and sixty-five patients out of 200 were discharged on the same day. Of the 35 patients hospitalized, the most frequent causes for overnight admission were: uncontrolled pain, surgical length or complexity of the procedure in nine patients, nausea/vomit in four patients. One hundred and one out of 200 patients answered the mailed questionnaire. None of the discharged patients were readmitted. Eighty-five percent of the answering patients evaluated the length of their hospital stay as adequate or moderately adequate. Ninety-two percent of the patients would recommend the day surgery to other patients. Conclusions: our experience demonstrates that the same-day discharge protocol for laparoscopic treatment of adnexal disease is safe and acceptable.
Feasibility and Outcomes of Same-Day Discharge after Multiport Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy

Abstract:Introduction: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) provides much quicker recovery for men than open prostatectomy. In most centers, discharge is planned the morning after operation. However, after several years, we observed that no routine intervention was required for a majority of men over the first evening. Here, we detail our institution's outcomes for multiport RARP (MP-RARP) with same-day discharge (SDD). Methods: After excluding patients with single-port RARP (n = 25) and overnight stays (n = 30), data from 224 patients (n = 224/279, 88.2%) who underwent MP-RARP from May 2021 to September 2023 were collected. All patients were placed on an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocol and were given instructions regarding SDD. Patients were considered as SDD if they were discharged on the day of operation. Data regarding messages and phone calls to health care providers, urology clinic, and emergency department visits were recorded for analysis in the week postoperation. Results: The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) operative time was 142.5 ± 25.2 minutes, with a mean (±SD) console time of 95.1 ± 25.6 minutes. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) estimated blood loss was 50 (50-100) mL, and the mean (±SD) length of hospitalization was 163.2 ± 64.6 minutes. No intraoperative complications occurred in this cohort. The median (IQR) patient-reported pain score at 1 hour after operation was 3.5 (0-7), compared with 2 (0-4) at discharge. Of the 145 (64.7%) patients who reported their postoperative pain management, only 50 (34.4%) endorsed using opioids, and of those, 8 (16%) were known chronic opioid users. In the week after operation, 14 (6.3%) patients had unplanned visits to the health care facility. Additionally, 56 (25%) of patients contacted the clinic regarding the postoperative course during the same time frame. Conclusions: SDD after RARP is predictable and safe. SDD helps reduce the costs associated with inpatient stays without compromising surgical outcomes for patients.

Abstract:The recent discovery that functional brown adipose tissue (BAT) persists in adult humans has enkindled a renaissance in metabolic research, with a view of harnessing its thermogenic capacity to combat obesity. This review focuses on the advances in the regulation and the metabolic significance of BAT in humans. BAT activity in humans is stimulated by cold exposure and by several factors such as diet and metabolic hormones. BAT function is regulated at two levels: an acute process involving the stimulation of the intrinsic thermogenic activity of brown adipocytes and a chronic process of growth involving the proliferation of pre-existing brown adipocytes or differentiation to brown adipocytes of adipocytes from specific white adipose tissue depots. BAT activity is reduced in the obese, and its stimulation by cold exposure increases insulin sensitivity and reduces body fat. These observations provide strong evidence that BAT plays a significant role in energy balance in humans and has the potential to be harnessed as a therapeutic target for the management of obesity.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an established technique for the treatment of early gastrointestinal neoplasia. Generally, multi-day (M-D) admission is required for patients undergoing ESD due to potential complications.AIM: To evaluate the feasibility of a same-day (S-D) discharge strategy for ESD of the esophagus or stomach.METHODS: The data of patients who underwent esophageal or gastric ESD were retrospectively collected from January 2018 to December 2021 at Peking University Cancer Hospital. The propensity score matching (PSM) method was applied to balance the unevenly distributed patient baseline characteristics between the S-D and M-D groups. Intraoperative and postoperative parameters were compared between the matched groups.RESULTS: Among the 479 patients reviewed, 470 patients, including 91 in the S-D group and 379 in the M-D group, fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Following PSM, 78 patients in each group were paired using the 1:1 nearest available score match algorithm. No significant difference was found between groups with respect to intraoperative and postprocedural major adverse events (AEs). Tumor size, complete resection rate, and procedural duration were comparable between the groups. The S-D group demonstrated a significantly shorter length of hospital stay (<i>P</i> < 0.001) and lower overall medical expenses (<i>P</i> < 0.001) compared with the M-D group.CONCLUSION: The S-D discharge strategy may be feasible and effective for esophagogastric ESD, and the procedural-related AEs can be managed successfully.

Abstract:Background Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are widely employed in colorectal surgery, successful in reducing postoperative morbidities and hospital length of stay (LOS). However, ERAS effects on the inflammatory bowel disease population remain unclear. This study examines the postoperative course of both Crohn’s disease (CD) and colon cancer (CC) patients after elective right hemicolectomies and compares the effectiveness of ERAS protocol. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on patients with CD and CC undergoing elective right hemicolectomies and ileocecectomies from January 2014 through June 2016 (pre-ERAS) and January 2017 through April 2019 (post-ERAS) from a single tertiary care center. Patient demographics and perioperative variables were examined, including prolonged postoperative ileus (PPOI), hospital LOS, and 30-day readmission. Results 98 CC patients and 91 CD patients met the inclusion criteria. The pre-ERAS CC and post-ERAS CC cohorts were significantly different: post-ERAS had fewer patients with congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had higher albumin levels. The pre-ERAS CC cohort had significantly longer operative durations and higher rates of concomitant procedures than the post-ERAS CC cohort. Both patients with CC and CD had a reduction in LOS with implementation of ERAS, decreasing by 2.24 days ( P = .002) and 1.21 days ( P = .038), respectively. There was a reduction in rates of organ space infections with CD (pre .132, post .00, P = .007). There was a trend towards an increased rate of PPOI with CD (Pre .079, Post .226, P = .062). Discussion The ERAS protocol significantly reduced LOS for both groups, without increasing 30-day readmission rates or other morbidities.

Abstract:Background: Patients undergoing immediate breast reconstruction with tissue expanders are frequently admitted after surgery for monitoring and pain control, which introduces additional costs and risks of nosocomial infection. Same-day discharge could conserve resources, mitigate risk, and return patients home for faster recovery. The authors used large data sets to investigate the safety of same-day discharge after mastectomy with immediate postoperative expander placement. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of patients in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database who underwent breast reconstruction using tissue expanders between 2005 and 2019. Patients were grouped based on date of discharge. Demographic information, medical comorbidities, and outcomes were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed to determine efficacy of same-day discharge and identify factors that predict safety. Results: Of the 14,387 included patients, 10% were discharged the same day, 70% on postoperative day 1, and 20% later than postoperative day 1. The most common complications were infection, reoperation, and readmission, which trended upward with length of stay (6.4% versus 9.3% versus 16.8%), but were statistically equivalent between same-day and next-day discharge. The complication rate for later-day discharge was statistically higher. Patients discharged later had significantly more comorbidities than same or next-day discharge counterparts. Predictors of complications included hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and obesity. Conclusions: Patients undergoing mastectomy with immediate tissue expander reconstruction are usually admitted overnight. However, same-day discharge was demonstrated to have an equivalent risk of perioperative complications as next-day discharge. For the otherwise healthy patient, going home the day of surgery is a safe and cost-effective option, although the decision should be made based on the individual patient. Same-day Discharge Following Vaginal Hysterectomy and Native-tissue Apical Repair for Uterovaginal Prolapse: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Introduction and hypothesis: The safety and feasibility of same-day discharge (SDD) has been consistently reported across the benign and gynecologic oncology literature. However, outcomes of SDD in the urogynecology population are sparse. The objectives of this study were to describe the success of SDD following vaginal hysterectomy and native-tissue colpopexy, and to compare the incidence of postoperative adverse events in patients discharged same-day versus postoperative day 1 (POD1). Further objectives were to compare pain, quality of recovery (QoR), and satisfaction between the groups. Methods: This was a single-center, prospective cohort study of patients with planned SDD. A standardized ERAS protocol was utilized. The QoR-40 questionnaire was administered at baseline, POD2, and the 6-week postoperative visit. Pain scores were captured similarly, and a satisfaction survey was administered at 6 weeks. The primary outcome was composite adverse events defined as any postoperative adverse event and/or health care utilization, excluding telephone calls, and urinary tract infection. Results: A total of 101 patients were enrolled in the study; the primary outcome was available for 99. SDD was achieved for 76 patients (77.0%); 23 patients stayed overnight (23.2%). The overall incidence of composite adverse events was 20.2% (95% CI, 13.5-29.2), and was not different between the groups (26.1% vs 18.4%, p = 0.42). Additionally, there were no differences in the QoR-40 or pain scores on POD2 and at 6 weeks. Patient satisfaction was high and similar between the groups. Conclusions: Successful SDD was achieved in 77.0% of the patients. SDD following vaginal hysterectomy and native-tissue colpopexy appears to be safe, feasible, and associated with good QoR and a high degree of patient satisfaction.

The aim of this paper was to develop ontology to provide a new approach to study and better understand chain of custody of digital evidence . Additionally, developed ontology can be used as a method to further develop a set of standard and procedures for secure management with digital evidence.
Early discharge following colectomy for colon cancer: A national perspective

Abstract:Background Although early discharge after colectomy has garnered significant interest, contemporary, large-scale analyses are lacking. Objective The present study utilized a national cohort of patients undergoing colectomy to examine costs and readmissions following early discharge. Methods All adults undergoing elective colectomy for primary colon cancer were identified in the 2016–2019 Nationwide Readmissions Database. Patients with perioperative complications or prolonged length of stay (>8 days) were excluded to enhance cohort homogeneity. Patients discharged by postoperative day 3 were classified as Early , and others as Routine . Entropy balancing and multivariable regression were used to assess the risk-adjusted association of early discharge with costs and non-elective readmissions. Importantly, we compared 90-day stroke rates to examine whether our results were influenced by preferential early discharge of healthier patients. Results Of an estimated 153,996 patients, 45.5% comprised the Early cohort. Compared to Routine , the Early cohort was younger and more commonly male. Patients in the Early group more commonly underwent left-sided colectomy and laparoscopic operations. Following multivariable adjustment, expedited discharge was associated with a $4,500 reduction in costs as well as lower 30-day (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.74, p<0.001) and 90-day non-elective readmissions (AOR 0.74, p<0.001). However, among those readmitted within 90 days, Early patients were more commonly readmitted for gastrointestinal conditions (45.8 vs 36.4%, p<0.001). Importantly, both cohorts had comparable 90-day stroke rates (2.2 vs 2.1%, p = 0.80). Conclusions The present work represents the largest analysis of early discharge following colectomy for cancer and supports its relative safety and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:Background: On the basis of our extensive experience in same-day discharge (SDD) sleeve gastrectomy, we extended this management strategy to anastomotic metabolic and bariatric surgeries (MBS). Objectives: To retrospectively analyze early outcomes (≤30 d) after anastomotic MBS with planned SDD (≤12 hr). Setting: University Hospital, Canada; Public Practice. Methods: SDD anastomotic MBS were proposed with strict preoperative criteria and included single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), and single-anastomosis sleeve ileal bypass (SASI). Enhanced recovery after bariatric surgery protocols and post-anesthesia care unit criteria were followed. Unplanned overnight stay, emergency department (ED) visit, readmission, morbidity-mortality, and reintervention rates were analyzed. Results: Since 2021, 208 patients (191 female and 17 male) have undergone SDD anastomotic MBS, with 76% conversion procedures: 92 SADI-S, 72 RYGB, 35 OAGB, and 9 SASI (mean age = 41.4 yr and mean preoperative body mass index = 41.9 kg/m2). Unplanned overnight stays and ED visits were 4.8% and 4.3%, respectively. Readmission rate was 5.8% (5 SADI-S, 5 RYGB, 1 OAGB, and 1 SASI). Overall morbidity rate was 14.9%, including 3.9% major complications. Within 30 days postoperatively, there were 2 duodenal leaks, 1 intrabdominal collection, 1 common bile duct stenosis, and 1 acute appendicitis in the SADI-S group. There were 2 occlusions on the jejunojejunal anastomosis and 1 bleeding on the gastrojejunal anastomosis in the RYGB group. Five (2.4%) required reintervention with no mortality. Conclusions: We report low and acceptable rates of unplanned overnight stay, readmission, and reintervention. Early outcomes suggest that SDD anastomotic MBS seems safe and feasible with an experienced team, selective criteria, and appropriate postoperative follow-up.
Laparoscopy Combined with Enhanced Recovery Pathway in Ileocecal Resection for Crohn's Disease: A Randomized Study.

Abstract:Background and Aims. Laparoscopic approach is recommended as the first-choice option for simple ileocecal resections. However, there are no randomized trials that have focused on patients with Crohn's disease (CD) treated by laparoscopy and enhanced recovery pathway. The aim of the present study is to prospectively evaluate the feasibility, safety, and short-term outcomes of laparoscopy with enhanced recovery pathway for CD patients undergoing ileocecal resection. Methods. A consecutive cohort of 32 CD patients who underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection between December 2015 and December 2016 was randomized to enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) group or standard care group. Primary outcome was total postoperative hospital stay. Secondary outcomes were time to first flatus and stool, pain scores, morbidity, reoperation rate, readmission rate, and in-hospital costs. Results. Compliance with the ERAS was high for all items (>= 90%) except the items of abdominal drains and early fluid intake. A significantly earlier return of bowel function was observed in the ERAS group. Compared with the standard care group, patients in the ERAS group had shorter postoperative hospital stay and lower in-hospital costs (5.19 +/- 1.28 versus 9.94 +/- 3.33 days, P < 0.001; 2.70 +/- 0.50 versus 3.73 +/- 0.75 ten thousand RMB, P < 0.001, respectively). Other parameters did not show any significant differences between the two groups. Conclusions. Laparoscopic approach within an ERAS perioperative care program is a safe and effective treatment combination for CD patients requiring ileocecal resection. Improving the Rate of Same Day Discharge in Gynecologic Oncology Patients Undergoing Minimally Invasive Surgery – An Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Quality Improvement Initiative

Abstract:Setting Same-day discharge (SDD) in patients undergoing minimally invasive gynecologic oncology (GO) surgery is a recent trend aligned with Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) principles. SDD in GO is safe and feasible based on several recent studies, including a quality improvement (QI) initiative in Edmonton, Alberta, which resulted in SDD rates >70%. Patients A baseline audit of GO patients at our center (Calgary, Alberta) found the SDD rate to be 14%. Given that Edmonton and our center are within the same province, they have similar patient populations and available resources – suggesting that interventions from the Edmonton QI initiative may be translatable. Objectives The objectives of our QI initiative were: 1) to increase the rate of SDD in eligible GO patients to 70%, and 2) to evaluate the ease with which QI methods demonstrated in one study could be applied at another center. Design A pre/post-intervention design was used (50 patients/group). Interventions Four interventions were designed to address root causes for failed SDD identified following QI diagnostics: 1) SDD as the default discharge plan, including a "Day Surgery" surgical booking, 2 & 3) development and implementation of ERAS SDD pre-operative and post-operative order sets, and 4) patient education SDD-specific documents. Measurements Rate of SDD was measured together with patient demographics and surgical outcomes. Process and balancing measures were defined and tracked. Main Results SDD in GO increased from 14% (7/50) to 82% (41/50) after the implementation of the above interventions (OR 28, p<0.0001, 95%CI 9.54-82.11). Improved SDD was achieved without negatively impacting post-operative rates of emergency department visits: 8% pre-, 4% post-intervention within 7 days (OR 0.48, p=0.678, 95%CI 0.09-2.74), 12% pre-, 10% post-intervention within 30 days (OR 0.8148, p=1.0, 95% CI 0.2317-2.86). Conclusions This ERAS QI initiative resulted in a substantial increase in SDD in GO, without a negative impact on balancing measures. We demonstrate that the "spread" of simple, clearly defined QI interventions across centers (where the patient population is similar) is feasible. This suggests that an ERAS SDD Program for GO could be a realistic goal for other centers with similar characteristics.

Abstract:Background: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) has become increasingly popular in the post-operative management of abdominal surgery. Published data suggest that patients on ERAS protocols have fewer minor and major complications, and highlight a reduction in medical morbidity (such as urinary and respiratory infections). Limited data is available on surgical complications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the ERAS protocol on post-operative complications and length of hospital stay. Furthermore, we aimed to determine the impact of this protocol on cost-effectiveness. Material and methods: From January 2016 to December 2022, 532 colectomies for colorectal cancer (CRC) were performed. A prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary hospital on the cohort of patients, aged 18 years and older, operated on for non-urgent colorectal cancer. The impact on post-operative complications, hospital stay and economic impact was analysed in two groups: patients managed under ERAS and non-ERAS protocol. A propensity score-matching analysis was performed between the two groups. Results: After propensity score matching 1:1, each cohort included 71 patients, and clinicopathological characteristics were well balanced in terms of tumour type, surgical technique and surgical approach. ERAS patients experienced fewer infectious complications and a shorter postoperative stay (p < 0.001). In particular, they had an 8.5% reduction in anastomotic dehiscence (p = 0.012) and surgical wound infections (p = 0.029). After analysis of medical complications, no statistically significant differences were identified in urinary tract infections, pneumonia, gastrointestinal bleeding or sepsis. ERAS protocol was more efficient and cost-effective than the control group, with an overall savings of 37,673.44€. Conclusions: The implementation of an enhanced recovery protocol for elective colorectal surgery in a tertiary hospital was cost-effective and associated with a reduction in post-operative complications, especially infectious complications.
