Abstract:The remarkable storage performance of manganese oxide (Mn3O4) makes it an appealing option for use as electrodes in electrochemical capacitors. However, the storage kinetics were significantly influenced by the mass loading of the electrode. Herein, we have inspected the dependency of mass loading on the storage performance of the spray pyrolyzed Mn3O4 thin film electrodes along with the correlation of structural and morphological characteristics. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies proven the formation of spinel Mn3O4 with a tetragonal structure. Morphological analysis revealed that all films exhibited fibrous structures with interconnected patterns at higher mass loadings. Moreover, the surface roughness and wettability of the electrode surface were influenced by variations in mass loading. Notably, thin-film electrode with a mass loading of 0.4 mg/cm2 exhibited the highest specific capacitance value of 168 F/g at 5 mV/s in a three-electrode system. Further, electrochemical impedance spectroscopic studies showed that there were noticeable changes in the capacitive behaviour of the electrode with respect to variations in mass loading. Moreover, the Dunn approach was employed to differentiate the underlying storage mechanism of the Mn3O4 electrode. Additionally, first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies were carried out in connection with the experimental study to comprehend the structure and electronic band structure of Mn3O4. This study underscores the critical importance of mass loading for enhancing the storage performance of Mn3O4 thin-film electrodes.

Abstract:The charge/discharge, electrochemical impedance, cyclic voltammogram, and cycling behaviors of crystalline KxMnO2·nH2O as cathode material for supercapacitors in Li2SO4, Na2SO4, and K2SO4 electrolytes were compared. The different power and cycling performance of KxMnO2·nH2O during charge/discharge in the three electrolytes were elucidated by analyzing its composition and structure evolution. Compared with the Li2SO4 and Na2SO4 electrolytes, the highest ionic conductivity of K2SO4 electrolyte, the fastest charge-transfer process and slightest structural evolution of KxMnO2·nH2O during charge/discharge in the K2SO4 electrolyte lead to a superior power and cycling behavior for supercapacitor application.
Structural, optical, morphological, and supercapacitive studies of electrophoretically deposited nanostructured Mn 3 O 4 thin films

Abstract:Herein, the trimanganese tetraoxide (Mn 3 O 4 ) thin films were deposited by the simple electrophoretic deposition technique using MnSO 4 precursor of different molarities (0.05, 0.075, 0.1, and 0.125 M). The effect of different molar concentrations of MnSO 4 precursor on structure, morphology, optical properties, and supercapacitive performance has been examined. The deposited thin films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller studies. The Mn 3 O 4 thin films have nanocrystalline tetragonal Hausmannite structure and porous morphology (grass/nanowire and nanoflower) with preferred orientation in the (220) plane. The supercapacitive performance of the Mn 3 O 4 thin film electrodes was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge techniques. The maximum specific capacitance value 237 F g −1 was obtained for the thin film deposited at 0.05 M MnSO 4 concentration and also exhibited 70 % capacitance retention after 2000 cycles. The pseudocapacitive nature of Mn 3 O 4 thin films was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies. This study revealed the nanostructured Mn 3 O 4 thin films have the potential to be used as electrode material for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Recently, aqueous sodium-ion batteries have attracted great attention for large-scale energy storage system due to its environmental friendliness, outstanding safety and abundance of sodium element [1]. Efficient positive electrode materials are vital to overall performance of Na-ion batteries(NIBs). Oxides are more favorable candidates for positive electrode materials due to its simple synthesis and high energy density. Among these oxides, Na0.44MnO2 gains great interest because of its low cost and intrinsic crystal structure forming large tunnels which facilitates sodium-ion reversible intercalation and transportation [2-3]. However some of our exploratory work shows that these materials can exhibit capacity fade, especially when discharged to lower potentials. In order to meet the demand of more stable cycling performance through a wide of applied potentials for Na0.44MnO2, we explore the use of nano-Al2O3(Alfa Aesar) for coating material. Some results, reported elsewhere suggest that the surface modification of LiMn2O4 with Al2O3 can enhance its electrochemical stability [4-5]. Herein, we explored a novel surface-modified Na0.44MnO2 positive electrode material via nano-Al2O3 coating during solid state synthesis process with Mn3O4, which presents improvement in the cycle stability. The concentration of nano-Al2O3 were 0 wt%, 2 wt%, 4 wt%, 6 wt%, 8 wt%, 10 wt%, respectively. SEM image (Figure 1) shows that those nano-Al2O3 particles tightly attached on the surface of Na0.44MnO2 tube-liked particles. It is evident from the XRD image (Figure 2) that Na0.44MnO2 is formed with absence of nano-Al2O3.These results indicate that nano-Al2O3 coating is a good method to improve the cyclic performance of Na0.44MnO2 positive electrode material. Further work will focus on optimizing the processing conditions and electrochemical performance of nano-Al2O3 modified Na0.44MnO2. In comparing the cyclic voltammetry curves (Figure 3) of the six samples, early data suggests that the additional of nano-Al2O3 slightly decrease the capacity of Na0.44MnO2 positive electrode material from 61.5 mAh/g to 57.4 mAh/g. However, 4wt% nano-Al2O3 modified Na0.44MnO2 exhibits better capacity retention after 10 cycles, and long duration cycle testing is under way. Abstract:Novel Mn3O4 microsphere with diameter about 2μm and smooth surface has been prepared by solvothermal treating a mixture of manganese (II) acetate tetrahydrate and oleic acid in absolute ethanol at a low temperature (120°C), and its structure and morphology are systematically investigated by XRD, XPS, and SEM. The morphology of Mn3O4 microsphere is mainly controlled by adding oleic acid and the size and regularity of Mn3O4 microsphere depend on the solvothermal treatment temperature and time. The capacitance performance of novel Mn3O4 microsphere as electrode material is tested using cyclic voltamogramm technique at a scan rate of 10mVs−1 in 1M Na2SO4 solution within a potential window ranging from −0.2 to 0.8V. Mn3O4 microsphere electrode material can be electrochemically oxidized to layered birnessite MnO2 with flowerlike morphology and pseudoconstant using potential cycling. A capacity improvement of Mn3O4 microsphere based electrode upon cycling can be observed for 400cycles, and its specific capacitance is significantly improved from 10Fg−1 (after 1cycle) to 219Fg−1 (after 400cycles). The obvious capacitance improvement is ascribed to the activation effect of the electrochemical cycling and a structural transformation.
Sputter Deposited Crystalline MoO 2 Films as a High-Capacity and Stable Electrode Material for Supercapacitors: Mechanistic/Electrochemical Insights

Abstract:In this work, we have optimized and fabricated pristine molybdenum dioxide (MoO 2 ) electrodes over the Silicon (Si) substrate and examined the impact of various ion-loaded aqueous electrolytes on their electrochemical behavior. The sputtered electrodes exhibited a high crystalline structure and a very low resistivity. These highly conductive electrodes were tested in three different aqueous electrolytes (acidic, neutral, and alkaline) to establish a relation between the electrode and the nature of the electrolyte to achieve optimal electrochemical performance and cyclability. The electrochemical kinetics showed that the charge storage mechanism was unique for all the electrolytes. The capacitive current was dominant in the neutral electrolyte, whereas it was diffusive dominant in alkaline and 70% capacitive in the acidic electrolyte. Our findings indicated that the MoO 2 @Si electrode exhibited superior electrochemical activity in an acidic electrolyte. The electrode showed a voltage window of 0.6 V with an areal capacity of 24 mF/cm 2 at 0.1 V/s scan rate. Moreover, the electrode also demonstrated excellent cyclability and capacitance retention (∼145%) till 5000 cycles. These results highlighted that the binder-free MoO 2 @Si electrode showed outstanding electrochemical activity and stability, which makes it suitable for sulfuric acid electrolyte-based energy storage systems.

Abstract:The basic microstructure‐dependent charge storage mechanisms of nanostructured MnO2 are investigated via dynamic observation of the growth and in situ probing the mechanical properties by using in situ AFM in conjunction with in situ nanoindentation. The progressive nucleation followed by three‐dimensional growth yields pulsed current deposited porous nanostructured γ‐MnO2, which exhibits a high specific capacitance of 437 F/g and a remarkable cycling performance with >96% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles. The proton intercalation induced expansion of MnO2 can be self‐accommodated by the localized compression and reduction of the porosity. More coincidentally, the proton intercalation induced softening is favorable for the elastic deformation of MnO2. This self‐adaptive capability of nanostructured MnO2 could generate high structural reliability during cycling. These discoveries offer important mechanistic insights for the design of advanced electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries in large-scale electric energy storage applications due to the natural-abundant sodium resources and similar working principle to LIBs during cycling [1]. Until now, many different cathodes for SIBs have been studied, including layered transition metal oxides (Na x TMO 2 , x<1), Prussian blue-type compounds, polyanionic and organic compounds [2]. Among them, Na x TMO 2 has been extensively reported, due to its layered structure, easy synthesis, promising electrochemical properties, and feasibility for commercial production [3]. According to the occupation of Na ions and oxygen stacking, Na x TMO 2 can be classified into P2 and O3 types, where P2 structure contasins trigonal prismatic sites of sodium ions and ABBA oxygen stacking sequence and O3 structure represents octahedral sites of sodium ions and ABCABC oxygen stacking sequence [4]. At low potentials (<2.0V), there is a phase transition P2-P2’ connected with the manganese redox activity and the Jahn-Teller distortion [5]. Compared with O3-type structure, P2-type Na x TMO 2 provides higher specific capacity and better structural stability due to the lower diffusion barriers through Na-ion prismatic sites [6]. Iron- and manganese-based layered oxides for sodium-ion batteries have attracted renewed interest due to their low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the phase change at high voltage and the Jahn-Teller effect lead to shortening cycle life and poor rate capability. We design a structure optimization of the Na 2/3 Mn 1/2 Fe 1/2 O 2 cathode through a partial substitution of Fe 3+ to explore the mechanism of redox activity of P2-type Mn/Fe-based layered cathodes. We present the investigation of the effect of simultaneous cationic substitution on the electrochemical performance and structural stability of P2-Na 2/3 Mn 1/2 Fe 1/2 O 2 . The obtained material exhibits a solid solution mechanism during desodiation/resodiation process and delivers an initial discharge capacity of 168 mA h g -1 at 0.1C and a capacity retention of 80% after 50 cycles. The modified P2 composition has stable cycle performance in the potential window from 1.5V to 4.5V. The main focus here is to understand the fundamental electrochemical mechanism of this layered cathode material by exploring the redox processes of transition metal cations and oxygen anions upon cycling. In situ X-ray synchrotron radiation diffraction is used to explore the structural changes during cycling. In situ X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy is used to elucidate the local electronic structure of Fe and Mn atoms as it evolves throughout this electrochemical process. 23 Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to investigate Na coordination environments during desodiation/resodiation. Ex situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy results reveal the participation of oxygen anions in the electrochemical reactions. Tuning the Composition, Crystal Structure and Morphology of Manganese(III/IV) Oxide for High-Power Storage Applications

Abstract:If inherently intermittent renewable energy technologies are to offer a practical alternative to conventional heat engines, it is critically important that efficient, cost-effective and sustainable energy storage solutions are developed to decouple supply and demand profiles. A promising strategy is to pair the competitive energy densities of batteries with the superior cycling lifetimes and power densities of supercapacitors,[1] employing an appropriate maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system to optimise energy exchange between these complementary devices.[2] Mixed-valence manganese(III/IV) oxides (MnO z , where z ranges between 1.5 and 2.0) have emerged as foremost candidates for the electroactive material in supercapacitor cathodes due to their low toxicity, minimal cost,[3] ready availability (manganese appears at an average concentration of ca . 1,000 ppm in the Earth’s crust[4]), wide electrochemical stability window ( ca . 1.0 V in aqueous electrolytes[5]), and high maximum theoretical specific capacitance ( ca . 1,370 F g -1 , based on the reduction of Mn 4+ ions by a single electron[6]). Charge storage in MnO z is predominantly mediated by the pseudocapacitive intercalation of cations from the surrounding electrolyte in each discharge phase, followed by the release of these guest ions during charging. Of the various crystallographic phases of MnO z , cryptomelane (α-MnO z ) and birnessite (δ-MnO z ) polymorphs are deemed two of the most promising candidates for storage applications because they possess characteristically wide channels for intercalation/de-intercalation:[8,9] α-MnO z consists of ca . 4.6 Å diameter one-dimensional tunnels enclosed between corner-sharing MnO 6 octahedra, whereas δ-MnO z comprises two-dimensional layers of MnO 6 octahedra separated by ca . 7.0 Å. Herein, a scalable, low-cost synthesis procedure is discussed that enables the production of highly pseudocapacitive birnessite and cryptomelane electrodes with tuneable material characteristics, including particle morphology, crystallographic structure, average Mn oxidation state, and the level of pre-intercalation by Na + and K + ions.[10] In addition to comparing the electrochemical properties of these Na x K y MnO z products in aqueous conditions, their application within an asymmetric supercapacitor is showcased: by optimising the relative masses of a Na x K y MnO z cathode and activated carbon anode in a 100 cm 2 aqueous full-cell configuration, discharge capacitances in the range 10-30 F g -1 can be achieved over a voltage span of 1.8 V at current densities as high as 10 A g -1 , with Coulombic efficiency exceeding 80% up to ca . 20 A g -1 . With these competitive performance characteristics, the developed Na x K y MnO z materials are a promising option for high-power supercapacitor cathodes, helping to pave the way towards more efficient and sustainable energy storage. Preparation and Electrochemical Performance of Nanostructured MnO2 Materials

Abstract:Nanostructured MnO2 materials were prepared in a micro-emulsion medium using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS）as a surfactant by a redox reaction between potassium permanganate and aniline. The morphologies of the obtained MnO2 were critically dependent on the concentrations of SDS. The particle sizes varied with the change in the micro-emulsion medium. The optimized properties of MnO2 material obtained with the surfactant concentration of 0.2 mol.L-1 had a specific surface area of 228.2 m2.g-1, and delivered a specific capacitance of 237 F.g -1 in 1 mol.L-1 Li2SO4. Additionally, a reversible Li-ion intercalation reaction occurred in the MnO2 calcined at 350 oC.
Manganese Oxide-based Mesoporous Thin-Film Electrodes: Manganese Disproportionation Reaction in Alkaline Media

Abstract:Abundant availability, reduced toxicity, and good thermal stability distinguish and make the manganese-based materials special in clean energy production and storage applications, when compared to the other transition metal-based materials. However, the manganese-base electrodes are not stable and undergo both Mn(III) and Mn(VI) disproportionation reactions under alkaline and/or acidic media. In this study, we explore the disproportionation reaction mechanism in alkaline media during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) utilizing mesoporous electrodes, namely LiMn2O4 (m-LMO), Mn3O4 (m-Mn3O4), and Mn2P2O7 (m-MnPP). These electrodes are crafted through the molten salt-assisted self-assembly (MASA) process. The procedure commences with the application of a metal salt(s)-surfactant and metal salt-pyrophosphoric acid-surfactant (where the surfactant is P123) lyotropic liquid crystalline mesophase coating over FTO surface by employing a clear ethanol or aqueous solution of the ingredients, followed by a subsequent calcination step at 300 oC. The m-LMO and m-Mn3O4 electrodes are characterized by spectroscopic, diffraction, imaging, and electrochemical techniques. At low electrochemical potentials, the Mn(III), and at more positive potentials, the Mn(VI) disproportionation reactions make these materials highly unstable in an alkaline media. The aforementioned degradations have been investigated by examination of the electrodes both prior to and subsequent use in electrochemical measurements (such as multiple cyclic voltammetry (m-CV) and multiple chronopotentiometry (m-CP)), conducted in various electrolytes. We found that the degradation process is relatively slow in the m-LMO, but elevated in the m-Mn3O4 and m-MnPP electrodes. The m-LMO is fully converted into the λ-MnO2 phase upon its oxidation and more robust to decomposition; making it ultra-thin further improves its robustness. However, the m-Mn3O4 and m-MnPP electrodes behave similar to each other and degrade more quickly (more pronounced in the later), by releasing purple-colored permanganate ions to the electrolyte media. A Mn(VI) disproportionation reaction mechanism is suggested using the experimentally gathered spectroscopic, diffraction, and electrochemical data. Formation of the Mn(VI) surface species and their electronegativity play vital roles in the disproportionation reaction.

Abstract:Pure and Cr-doped Mn3O4 thin films have been successfully prepared by the SILAR method. The prepared films' microstructural, morphological and electrochemical behaviours were analyzed by various techniques such as, XRD, TEM, SEM, FT-Raman and FTIR. The electrochemical characteristics of the prepared films for supercapacitor electrode in 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution were analyzed via cyclic voltammetry (CV), Galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The XRD patterns reveal the Mn3O4 has a polycrystalline nature with the tetragonal phase. The presence of the functional group and the formation of the pure and Cr doped Mn3O4 were confirmed by FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopy. A morphological investigation of SEM and TEM confirms the nanoneedle like structure. The electrochemical studies were carried out for all the samples. The 3 wt% Cr-doped Mn3O4 electrode exhibited the 181 F g−1 specific capacitance at the current density of 1 A g−1.

Abstract:The LiMn2O4 and LiSn0.0125Mn1975O4 thin films were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrate by RF magnetron sputtering. To obtain the structural stability and good cycle performance, deposition parameters, namely working pressure, sputtering gas ratio of Ar and O2, post-annealing temperature were established. The structure and surface morphology of thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The electrochemical properties were estimated by two electrode half-cell test with WBCS 3000 (Wonatech, Korea) at constant current rate of 1 C-rate. The Sn substituted LiMn2O4 thin film deposited at 10 mtorr with mixture of argon and oxygen (Ar/O2 = 3/1) and then annealed at 500 degrees C in O2 atmosphere showed good cycle performance. The Sn substituted LiMn2O4 thin films showed larger capacity of -30 microAh/microm-cm2 and higher cyclability than LiMn2O4 thin films.
Electrolytic ion diffusion properties and their effects on charge storage potentials of pseudocapacitive Co3O4 electrode film

Abstract:In this report, we have employed an electrodeposition approach under three-electrode configuration to fabricate Co 3 O 4 electrode film and investigated the effect of electrolytic Na + and K + from KOH, NaOH, and Na 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolytes, on its charge storage characteristics. The microstructural studies validated the formation of stable phases and cubic crystal structure. The film grew with slightly dense sphere-shaped nanostructure and large surface area and is composed of corresponding elements, as revealed from microstructural studies. The charge storage measurements on fabricated Co 3 O 4 film electrode were carried out extensively under three-electrode mode. The electrode's performance was found to be dependent on ion diffusion nature of the electrolytes and hence displayed optimum specific capacitance/capacity of 240 Fg −1 /46.6mAh g −1 in Na 2 SO 4 compared to in NaOH due to multiple redox peaks, with better ion diffusion in KOH due to smaller Na+ ions, constituting relatively low solution resistance with faster ion kinetic and transport. The study unveiled that the performance of Co 3 O 4 electrode in aqueous electrolyte is dependent on the electrolyte's ionic strengths, mobility and diffusion, and pH.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) films are developed by potentiostatic electrodeposition on a stainless steel sheet as a current collector using manganese acetate tetrahydrate solution at a concentration of 0.25 mol L −1 . The deposited sample layer is found to be amorphous as confirmed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The capacitive property of the prepared electrodes is characterized by charging/discharging, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques in four different aqueous solutions; sodium sulfate, magnesium acetate, nickel acetate, and a mixture of sodium chloride + sodium bicarbonate + borax. Charge–discharge curves reveal higher specific capacitance ( C s ) of 1580 F g −1 at 0.5 mA cm −2 for the investigated MnO 2 film which is characterized in Ni acetate aqueous solution. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the electrodeposited manganese oxide films are also studied. The results indicate that the specific capacitance of the deposited samples showed a strong dependency on the electrolyte aqueous solutions, resulting in developing new electrolytes which is a top priority effort in comparison to seeking new electrode materials. It is found that the matching between the pore size structure of the electrode and the ion size of the electrolyte is of great importance for the improved capacity of prepared capacitors.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide has been synthesized by a self-reacting microemulsion method. The result of X-ray diffraction shows that lack of clear peaks and broadening of peaks indicate its amorphous nature. Typical cyclic voltammograms were measured in 0.5 mol L-1 Na2SO4 aqueous solution and the potential ranges were controlled from -0.5 to 0.5, from -0.65 to 0.65, and from -0.75 to 0.75 V versus Hg/Hg2SO4 at a sweep rate of 2 mV s(-1). Rectangular and symmetric image was observed between -0.5 and 0.5 V indicating high electrochemical reversibility in this potential and sweep rate.The influence of cation species and concentration (activity) on electrochemical performances of MnO2 is also discussed in this work. Cyclic voltammetric experiments have been performed between -0.5 and 0.5 V versus Hg/Hg2SO4 in Li2SO4, Na2SO4 and K2SO4 aqueous solutions with different salt concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 1 mol L-1. The specific capacitance of MnO2 was found to depend strongly on the cation concentration and species, and specific capacitance value will increase with the increase of cation concentration for all electrolytes. The logarithmic dependence of capacitance of MnO2 on cation activity indicates that the charge storage for MnO2 is involved in a fast redox reaction through cation insertion. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Nanostructures of manganese oxides are a promising pseudocapacitive electrode material due to its eco-friendly, low cost, and intrinsically high capacity. In this work, we prepared monometallic manganese oxide Mn3O4, and MnO2 using a facile, one-step hydrothermal method at low processing temperature. The structural, morphological, elemental analysis of manganese oxide (Mn3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and one-dimensional MnO2 nanowires (1-D NWs)) powders confirmed from XRD, TEM, SEM, and EDAX techniques. The prepared materials have the same crystal structure with different phase and morphology. The morphology information of prepared Mn3O4, MnO2 powders visualized from an electron microscope of TEM and SEM techniques as particle and wire type morphology. The electrochemical performance of fabricated individual Mn3O4 and MnO2 @ Ni foam electrodes exhibited specific capacitance around 182 and 243 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g from galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles measurement in presence of 1 M KOH compared with 0.5 M KOH electrolyte solution. Also, from these results, the morphology of MnO2 (NWs) has better specific capacitance than Mn3O4 (NPs) in 1 M KOH electrolyte solution.

Structural regulation of porous MnO2 nanosheets and their electrocapacitive behavior in aqueous electrolytes

Abstract:Both nanosheet structure and porous feature are two important factors to improve the performance of electrode materials. In this work, two types of MnO2 nanosheets (MnO2-NSs), namely MnO2-NS-K and MnO2-NS-N, are synthesized respectively from the starting systems containing potassium hydroxide and ammonia. Ultrathin MnO2-NS-N nanosheets have a poor layered structure and a large surface area of 116.0 m2 g−1. The capacitance of MnO2-NS-N is about 200 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 in aqueous Na2SO4 electrolyte while 329 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 in MgSO4 solution. Thick MnO2-NS-K nanosheets with a surface area of 46.4 m2 g−1 show the capacitances of around 190 and 217 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 in Na2SO4 and MgSO4 electrolytes, respectively. The capacitances of MnO2-NS in MgSO4 electrolyte decrease quickly with the increase of current density, possibly due to the sluggish dynamics of intercalation and deintercalation of Mg2+ ions compared with Na+ ions. It is found that the surface capacitance plays an important role in the capacitive behavior. Both of MnO2-NSs show a better cycle stability in aqueous Na2SO4 electrolyte. Based on the experimental data and features of the MnO2-NSs, the structure-property relationship has been discussed.

Abstract:Electrode materials are important indicators for evaluating the performance of electrochemical capacitors, and designing nanostructured materials with high specific capacitance and excellent cycling stability performance is an important way to enhance the performance of supercapacitors. In this study, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used as a cationic surfactant, and flower cluster-like Mn 3 O 4 particles were prepared by the vesicle soft template method, and different concentrations of CTAB were set in order to investigate its effect on the formation and electrical properties of Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Physical and electrochemical characterization was carried out using various means such as XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, CV, EIS, and GCD. The results show that the Mn 3 O 4 electrode material exhibits a higher specific capacitance of 261 F/g in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte when the current density is 0.5 A/g and still maintains 253 F/g when the current density is increased to 10 A/g. Excellent capacitance retention is observed after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g (up to 93%). In addition, a Mn 3 O 4 //AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled using Mn 3 O 4 as the positive electrode and commercially available activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode, and the device provided a maximum energy density of 30.56 Wh/kg at 452.74 W/kg.

Abstract:The structural and electrochemical properties of α-MnO2, prepared by acid digestion of Mn2O3, and its lithiated derivatives xLi2O · MnO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) have been investigated as insertion compounds in the search for new and viable cathode materials for rechargeable 3 V batteries. The α-MnO2 product fabricated by this technique contains water within the large (2 × 2) channels of the structure; the water can be removed from the α-MnO2 framework without degradation of the structure, and then at least partially replaced by Li2O (lithium oxide). The Li2O-doped α-MnO2 electrodes, described generically as xLi2O · MnO2, stabilize the structure and provide higher capacities on cycling than the parent material. The structures of these α-MnO2-type electrode materials are described, and electrochemical data are presented for both liquid electrolyte and polymer electrolyte Li/α-MnO2 and Li/xLi2O · MnO2 cells.
