Abstract:Introduction: In recent research, the expansion in the use of Mg alloys for biomedical applications has been approached by modifying their surfaces in conjunction with micro-arc oxidation (MAO) techniques which enhance their abrasion and corrosion resistance. Methods: In this study, combining laser texturing and MAO techniques to produce the dense ceramic coatings with microstructures. On the surface of the AZ31 Mg alloy, a micro-raised annulus array texture has been designed in order to increase the surface friction under liquid lubrication and to improve the operator's grip when holding the tool. For this work, the micro-morphology of the coatings was characterised, and the friction properties of the commonly used scalpel shank material 316 L, the untextured surface and the textured surface were comparatively analysed against disposable surgical gloves. Results and discussion: The results show that the Laser-MAO ceramic coating grows homogenous, the porosity decreases from 14.3% to 7.8%, and the morphology after friction indicates that the coating has good wear resistance. More specifically, the average coefficient of friction (COF) of the three types of gloves coated with Laser-MAO ceramic was higher than that of the 316 L and MAO ceramic coatings under the action of the annulus-integrated texture under the lubrication conditions of physiological saline and defatted sheep blood, which achieved the goal of increasing friction for the purpose of helping to prevent the problem of tool slippage from the hand.

Abstract:Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is an efficient approach to improve the hardness, wear resistance, and other properties of aluminum alloys. In order to investigate the effect of the electrolyte concentration on the properties of MAO coatings for LY12 alloy, the voltage variation during the MAO process was recorded. The surface morphologies and phase compositions of the coatings produced with different electrolytes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The roughness and thickness of the coatings were measured using a pocket roughness meter and an eddy-current thickness meter, respectively. The tribological performances of the coatings were investigated against GCr15 bearing steel on a ball-on-disc wear tester in open air. The results showed that with an increase in the Na2SiO3 content, the working voltage of the MAO process decreased, the roughness and thickness of the coatings increased significantly, and the relative content of the α-Al2O3 phase decreased. With an increase in the KOH content, the working voltage decreased slightly, the roughness and thickness of the coatings increased slightly, and the α-and γ-Al2O3 phase contents remained unchanged. The friction coefficient and wear rate of the coatings increased with an increase in the Na2SiO3 and KOH concentrations. A decrease in the porosity and roughness and an increase in the α-Al2O3 content of the coatings reduced their wear mass loss.

Abstract:The tribological performance of Mn.P coating and PC/MoS2 coating was investigated and compared with that of the reference steel (AISI52100) with different surface roughness. A mini traction machine and SRV tribometer were used to measure the COF under rolling–sliding and pure sliding conditions. Mn.P and PC/MoS2 exhibited a significant antifriction effect. The COF of the coated samples were less affected by the change in slide-to-roll ratio than that of the uncoated samples. As the wear time was prolonged, the running performance of the Mn.P coating improved relative to that of PC/MoS2. The effects of roughness, rolling speed and contact loads of coatings on wear mechanisms were discussed. Only one of the contact pairs treated with Mn.P coating showed improved tribological behaviour.

Abstract:A duplex process was designed to modify the surface of LY12CZ aluminum alloy by using surface mechanical attrition treatment ( SMAT) prior to microarc oxidation ( MAO) . A surface nanocrystalline ( SNC) layer was formed on the alloy surface by SMAT, a ceramic outer layer grew on the SNC layer by MAO, and finally an SNC-MAO composite coating was fabricated. The tribo-logical behaviors of the MAO coating and SNC-MAO composite coating were comparatively evaluated. Experimental results showed that the SNC-MAO composite coating had a better wear resistance than the MAO coating in the same test condition due to a higher hardness of the ceramic coating. The wear mechanism of the MAO coating and SNC-MAO composite coating involved materials transfer from the steel ball to the coating and oxidation wear.

Abstract:The 7A04 Al alloy is a commonly used lightweight metal material; however, its low wear resistance limits its application. In this study, the wear resistance of this alloy was improved by preparing micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings, MAO/MoS2 composite coatings, and hard-anodized (HA) coatings on its surface. The friction and wear behaviors of these three coatings with diamond-like coated (DLC) rings under oil lubrication conditions were investigated using a ring–block friction tester. The wear rates of the coatings on the block surfaces were determined using laser confocal microscopy, and the wear trajectories of the coatings were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that, among the three coatings, the MAO/MoS2 coating had the lowest coefficient of friction of 0.059, whereas the HA coating had the lowest wear rate of 1.47 × 10−6 mm/Nm. The MAO/MoS2 coatings exhibited excellent antifriction properties compared to the other coatings, whereas the HA coatings exhibited excellent anti-wear properties. The porous structure of the MAO coatings stored lubricant and replenished the lubrication film under oil lubrication. Meanwhile, the introduced MoS2 enhanced the densification of the coating and functioned as a solid lubricant. The HA coating exhibited good wear resistance owing to the dense structure of the amorphous-phase aluminum oxide. The mechanisms of abrasive and adhesive wear of the coatings under oil lubrication conditions and the optimization of the tribological properties by the solid–liquid synergistic lubrication effect were investigated. This study provides an effective method for the surface modification of Al alloys with potential applications in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Abstract:Micro-arc oxidation(MAO) ceramic coating of ZM5 alloy was prepared in the silicate electrolyte system with nano-graphite particle.The micro morphology,chemical and phase composition were investigated by SEM,EDS and XRD.At room temperature,the tribological properties of coatings were evaluated by a ball-on-disc wear test machine.The results show that the MAO ceramic coating with nano-graphite is composed by Mg2SiO4,MgO,Mg,and C.Graphite disperses in the coating through mechanical effect and shows antifriction effect.The volume friction rate of the MAO ceramic coating with nano-graphite is 9.19×10-5 mm3/Nm under the load of 4.9 N.It is one-fourteenth of that of ZM5 substrate and one-third of that of MAO ceramic coating without graphite.The volume friction rate of the MAO ceramic coating with nano-graphite is 1.44×10-4 mm3/Nm under the load of 9.8 N.It is one-eighth of that of ZM5 substrate and two-fifth of that of the MAO ceramic coating without graphite.The wear resistance of ZM5 substrate increases dramatically because of the MAO ceramic coating with nano-graphite.The wear mechanism of the MAO ceramic coating with nano-graphite is fatigue wear from the fatigue spalling morphology.
