Abstract:Abstract Biochar is a promising pyrolysed carbon-enriched soil amendment and has excellent properties for agriculture production and to remediate environmental pollution. A set of reviews were conducted on biochar production by pyrolysis process from various waste biomass which has drawn extensive interest due to the low cost of production with several benefits. As many potential technologies have been developed, there are still several knowledge gaps that have been identified for some key points to contribute a comprehensive study towards soil fertility, nutrient and water retention, soil microbial activity, plant growth and yield, pollution remediation, mitigation of greenhouse gas emission and an improvement in the farmer’s economy to achieve maximum profit by adopting environmentally friendly technique “pyrolysis”. Therefore, this review explored a detailed study on food waste biochar production by the pyrolysis process and its impact on different applications as an amendment. Slow pyrolysis process at low and medium temperatures is a potential amendment for agriculture production and soil and water remediation by enhancing biochar properties like carbon, BET surface area, cation exchange capacity, zeta potential, and nutrient content, etc. with minimum ash content. The biochar enhances soil water and nutrient retention capacity, crop yield, and improved microbial community at different soil quality. Additionally, food waste to biochar is a realistic adsorbent and economical carbon sequester to mitigate GHG emissions. This review conducted a brief assessment of the knowledge gaps and future research directions for researchers, encouraging investigators, stakeholders, and policymakers to make the best possible decision for food waste valorization.
Comparison of the Responses of Soil Enzymes, Microbial Respiration and Plant Growth Characteristics under the Application of Agricultural and Food Waste-Derived Biochars

Abstract:The conversion of bio-wastes to useful products such as biochar provide a suitable option not only to minimize the mass of wastes, but also to use the biochar as soil amendment. In the present study, food waste biochar (FWB) and agricultural waste derived biochar (AB), either alone or in combination (FWB + AB), were tested for their effects on soil microbiological characteristics (soil enzymes, soil basal as well as substrate-induced respiration), plant growth and photosynthetic parameters. Four treatments were tested: control, FWB, AB and FWB + AB. The results indicated that the application of AB significantly enhanced the plant above ground and below ground fresh and dry biomass as compared to other amendments and control (+41 to +205% compared to control). The application of FWB enhanced the quantum yield of photosystem II (QY-max, +4% compared to control) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI, +13% compared to control). Moreover, the FWB application improved the soil dehydrogenase (DHA) activity (+24% compared to control). Furthermore, the soil basal respiration was found to be increased under AB application (+46% compared to control) and the substrate-induced respirations were relatively decreased, depicting negative effects of applied biochars on substrate-induced respirations. Thus, we concluded that the differential responses of observed crop and soil attributes might be related to the biochar specific effects on soil properties.

Abstract:Agricultural organic matter is a major component of organic waste on earth that significantly contributes in environmental pollution. The conversion of organic waste into biochar and addition to soil is the recommended strategy to reduce the negative environmental effects of organic waste and to increase the soil fertility. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the changes in nutrient concentrations, rice yield and microbial community structure in a Psammaquent and Plinthudult at harvest following incorporation of biochar derived from wheat straw. Wheat straw biochar generated at 300-500 degrees C under oxygen limited conditions was applied, in a greenhouse experiment to a Psammaquent and Plinthudult at a rate of 3% weight/weight (w/w). The biochar addition to both types of soil significantly increased the soil pH from 4.2 to 6.2 and 4.7 to 6.7, total nitrogen by 135 and 37%, and organic carbon by 90 and 80%, in the Psammaquent and Plinthudult, respectively as compared to the respective controls. The dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was decreased by 24 and 15% and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 40 and 44% in Psammaquent and Plinthudult, respectively. The biochar decreased the concentrations of K leached by 24%, B by 25%, Cu by 80%, Mn by 37% and Zn by 33% in the Psammaquent and B by 50%, Cu by 60%, Fe by 43%, Mn by 69% and Zn by 83% in the Plinthudult as compared to the controls. The wheat straw biochar addition to two soils increased the accumulation of Mn, Mo, Na and Zn in both rice straw and grain and decreased the leaching of nutrients, organic carbon and nitrogen at rice harvest and increased the leaching of Ca, Na, and Mg in both Psammaquent and Plinthudult. The biochar increased the pH, TOC and nitrogen in both soils. The biochar significantly changed the PLFA concentration indicating different microbial community pattern in soils growing rice compared to their controls. Thus, the results indicated that wheat straw biochar increased the productivity of rice in the Plinthudult and Psammaquent.
Biochar Modulates Wheat Root Metabolome and Rhizosphere Microbiome in a Feedstock-dependent Manner

Abstract:Background: Biochar is a multifunctional soil conditioner capable of enhancing soil health and plant productivity, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here we tackled this question using wheat as a model plant and through the lens of the rhizosphere, a vital soil-plant interface continuum. We systematically examined the effects of four types of biochar (corn stover, cattle manure, pine sawdust, or wheat straw) applied at two rates (0.25% or 2.5%, w/w). Results: Employing untargeted metabolomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we revealed both common and unique modulating effects of the tested biochar treatments on wheat root metabolites and rhizosphere microbiome structure and functioning. Biochar modulated numerous metabolic pathways in wheat roots, where amino acid metabolism was the most common one, leading to cascade effects on the dynamics of a wide range of secondary metabolites, including many plant signaling molecules (e.g., flavonoid compounds, brassinosteroids) that are known to be involved in plant-microbe interactions. All biochar treatments increased rhizosphere microbial diversity, altered community composition, enhanced microbial interactions, and resulted in functional changes. Increased Burkholderiales (denitrifying bacteria) abundance and decreased Thermoplasmata (archaeal methanogens) abundance could explain biochar's widely reported effects on nitrous oxide and methane mitigation, respectively. Biochar enhanced positive correlations among microbes and network complexity, particularly modularity, suggesting local adaptation through mutualism and/or synergism and the formation of modules of functionally interrelated taxa. A large number of diverse keystone taxa from both dominant and non-dominant phyla emerged after biochar treatments, including those known to be involved in methane, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling. Besides common alterations, treatment-specific alterations also occurred, and biochar type (i.e., feedstock choice) exerted greater influence than application rate. Wheat biochar applied at a 0.25% rate showed the strongest and distinct modulating effects, resulting in orchestrated changes in both root metabolites and rhizosphere microbiome, especially those relevant to plant-microbe interactions and likely beneficial to the host plant (e.g., upregulated biosynthesis of zeatin and down-regulated limonene degradation). Conclusions: Our work contributes to a mechanistic understanding of how biochar modulates the soil-plant continuum and provides new insights into the potential of top-down rhizosphere microbiome engineering through biochar-based reprogramming of root-microbe interactions.

Abstract:Arid and semi-arid soils are low in organic matter and have poor fertility, making them a serious threat to crop production. Most organic amendments, such as crop residues and farmyard manure, are short lived because of rapid decomposition. Incubation and pot studies were conducted to assess the impact of wheat straw biochar (produced at 350 °C) on temporal changes in soil microbial biomass and fertility status and to evaluate the efficacy of biochar for maize production in the top layer of Typic calciargid. The incubation study compared four levels of biochar (control, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% on a w/w basis of soil) and two fertilizer rates, i.e., unfertilized (no NPK fertilizer) and fertilized (nitrogen, P2O5 and K2O with rates of 125, 80 and 52.5 mg kg−1 soil, respectively). After incubation, the 2.0% biochar significantly improved the soil cation exchange capacity, organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon by up to 35, 59 and 26%, respectively, while decreasing the soil pH by up to 1.5% compared to that of the control treatment. When fertilized, the 2.0% biochar improved the soil's available phosphorous, extractable potassium and total nitrogen by up to 59, 39 and 28%, respectively, compared to those of the control. The results from the pot experiment showed that using the 1% biochar with fertilizer significantly increased the maize dry biomass and grain yield by up to 57 and 72%, respectively, compared to those of the control. Additionally, the nitrogen and phosphorus recoveries from the mineral fertilizers improved significantly (up to 26 and 38%, respectively) when using the 1.0% biochar compared to those of the control. Conclusively, the addition of 1.0% biochar significantly improved maize growth and yield by enhancing nutrient recovery from mineral fertilizer and improving soil properties.

Abstract:Biochar has been found to be suitable for a wide array of applications. However, the repurpose of spent biochar has been far less explored. In this study, we utilized biochar as a pH treatment for wastewater effluent obtained from the pineapple fibre retting process and then used the spent biochar as a growth substrate media in place of commercially and non-reusable substrates, such as peat and rockwool. Biochar produced from wheat straw was used to treat the effluent which was then characterized for macro and micronutrient content. Treatment of effluent with biochar increased the micronutrients in the effluent, such as the iron content by 10-fold and the manganese content by 5-fold. The biochar treated wastewater effluent from the pineapple fibre retting was used as hydroponic medium to grow basil and arugula. The spent biochar was subsequently used as a growth substrate medium as a replacement for rockwool and peat. Initial tests showed successful germination for basil and arugula.

Potential of Drought Tolerant Rhizobacteria Amended with Biochar on Growth Promotion in Wheat

Abstract:Drought stress is the prime obstacle for worldwide agricultural production and necessitates innovative strategies for enhancing crop resilience. This study explores the efficacy of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biochar (BC) as sustainable amendments for mitigating the effects of drought on wheat growth. Multiple experiments were carried out on isolated strains to assess their drought tolerance potential and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes. Experiments in the laboratory and natural environment were conducted to assess the impact of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, biochar, and their synergistic application on various growth parameters of wheat. The results revealed that the drought-tolerant PGPR strains (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus tequilensis), alongside biochar (rice husk), alleviated the phytotoxic impact of drought by increasing the root length from 17.0% to 70.0% and shoot length from 30.0% to 82.0% as compared to un-inoculated stressed controls. The total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of the plants were substantially increased to 477% and 423%, respectively, when biochar and PGPR were applied synergistically. Significant enhancements in membrane stability index, relative water content, proline, and sugar level were achieved by combining biochar and bacterial strains, resulting in increases of 19.5%, 37.9%, 219%, and 300%, respectively. The yield of wheat in terms of plant height, spike length, number of spikelets per spike, and number of grains per spike was enhanced from 26.7% to 44.6%, 23.5% to 62.7%, 91.5% to 154%, and 137% to 182%, respectively. It was concluded that the biochar-based application of PGPR induced drought tolerance in wheat under water deficit conditions, ultimately improving the production and yield of wheat.

Abstract:Two field experiments were carried out during two successive winter seasons 2014/2015 where wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L., CV. Giza 168) was cultivated in sandy soil under sprinkler irrigation system at Ismaillia Agric. Res. Station, ARC. Combined thoroughly mixed biochar , sulfur and organic materials (compost) as soil conditioner along with different rates of nitrogen and phosphorus comprising 18 treatments were applied in a split split design. Chemical properties of sandy soil as well as its nutrients availability, nutritional status, Apparent Nutrients Recovery Efficiency (ANRE) and wheat yield productivity were evaluated. Biochar was added with three rates 1, 2 and 4 ton fed-1. Nitrogen was applied with three rates 50%,75% and 100%, where phosphorus rates were 75% and 100% of the recommended dose for wheat. Soil pH was slightly decreased by increasing the rate of biochar application ,while the values of EC, O.M, CEC and availability of N, P and K nutrients increased significantly by increasing the rate of biochar amendment . The application of high rates of biochar along with high rates of both N and P significantly increased the availability of N, P and K as compared to control (without biochar) and other treatments. Similar results were obtained for both tested seasons. All applied treatments increasedsignificantly the total contents of macronutrient over control. Moreover, biochar application combined with N and P rates has a positive effect on plant growth and crop yields. The yield components increased gradually by increasing the rate of N and P application in presence of biochar as compared to control (without biochar), especially in case of the second rate of biochar (2 ton fed-1) along with the high rate of N and P (100%) from the recommended dose. Application of second rate of biochar (2 ton fed-1) in presence of high rate of N and P ( N3 combined with P2) significantly increased wheat straw and grains. This increase was higher than that existing in case of applying the high rate of biochar (4 ton fed-1) . On the other hand, the lowest straw and grains yield was recorded in case of the control treatment (without biochar), similar results were recorded for both tested seasons. Moreover, the calculation of Apparent Nutrients Recovery Efficiency values by wheat crop increased due to the presence of biochar as a soil conditioner as compared to control (without biochar) especially in presence of the second rate of biochar ( 2 ton fed-1).Finally, the obtained results indicate that blending biochar with organic materials (compost) along with sulfur in sandy soils prevents the loss of nutrients, improves the soil chemical properties , holds nutrients against leaching , increases the availability of nutrient to plants, increases nutrient use efficiency, maintains the surface sorption and increases the wheat yield productivity.
Enhancing soil resilience and crop physiology with biochar application for mitigating drought stress in durum wheat (Triticumdurum)

Abstract:The use of biochar has recently garnered significant attention as an agricultural management technique highly endorsed by the scientific community. Biochar, owing to its high carbon content, contributes to increased organic matter storage in the soil, consequently enhancing crop growth. This study aimed to elucidate changes in physicochemical soil fertility and durum wheat (Triticum durum) var. Vitron production under the influence of three biochar doses (0 g/kg, 5 g/kg, and 15 g/kg of soil) in combination with varying levels of drought stress (100 %, 80 %, 40 %, and 20 % of field capacity 'FC'). Notably, we observed a substantial increase in all physicochemical soil parameters, except for active calcium carbonate equivalent (ACCE), which displayed lower values (8.78 ± 1.43 %) in soils treated with biochar compared to control soil (15.69 ± 4.03 %). The biochar dose of 5 g/kg yielded the highest moisture content (8.81 %) and pH value (7.83). However, the highest organic matter content (4.89 ± 0.17 %) and total calcium carbonate equivalent 'TCCE' (3.67 ± 0.48 %) were observed with the dose 15 g/kg. Nevertheless, regarding plant growth, no improvements were observed in terms of height and above-ground biomass (AGB). Conversely, leaf surface area exhibited significant changes with biochar application, along with an increase in chlorophyll pigment content. On the other hand, drought stress significantly hindered plant height, AGB, and leaf water reserves, resulting in values of 13.48 ± 1.60 cm, 1.57 ± 0.31g/plant, and 41.79 ± 1.67 %, respectively. The interaction between biochar and water stress appeared to mitigate and limit the impact of stress. Notably, an enhancement in organic matter storage and soil water reserves was observed. For example, the moisture content in the control soil was 6.95 %, while it increased to 12.76 % for 15g biochar/kg and 80 % FC. A similar trend was observed for organic matter, TCCE, and electrical conductivity. This effect positively influenced chlorophyll a and b content, as well as leaf water content. However, when stress was combined with biochar amendment, plant height and AGB decreased. The addition of biochar improved soil fertility and physiological parameters of wheat plants. Nevertheless, when combined with water stress, especially in cases of reduced water reserves, productivity did not witness any significant improvements.
Effect of biochar on some soil properties after 4-year application and its effect on growth, yield and nutrient uptake of wheat grown on an alkaline soil

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of biochars on some soil properties, plant growth, nutrient concentrations and uptakes after a 4-year application. Biochars produced at pyrolysis temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C were applied to the microplots at a rate of 30 t ha−1 in 2017. In 2020–2021 growing season, basal fertilizations were applied to the microplots before sowing wheat. The results showed that biochar applications had no significant effect on soil pH, EC, and CaCO3, although they increased cation exchange capacity and organic matter content. Available nutrient concentrations were not affected positively in general. While biochar applications enhanced vegetative growth and the straw yield, the grain yield decreased. Moreover, straw and grain nutrient concentrations did not vary with biochar applications, but the total nutrient uptake increased. Positive correlations were determined between the carbon sequestration potential of the soils and total yield. In addition, it was revealed that the effect of biochar applications on soil physical properties did not create a significant variation. According to the principal component analysis, the properties with the lowest effect were found to be EC of the soils. Findings from this study indicated that biochar did not directly affect plant growth by providing nutrients to the soil or increasing the amount of available nutrients; however, it can stimulate plant growth by improving some soil characteristics.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Biochar (BC) is a carbon-rich product obtained by heating biomass in a closed system with a finite amount of oxygen. BC has gained significant attention in agriculture as a soil amendment. This study investigated the effect of BC produced from agricultural bio-waste on soil physical and chemical properties and wheat and barley growth performance under rainfed conditions. The BC was applied at different rates before tillage at 0, 5, 10, and 15 t ha −1 . The BC application significantly enhanced most soil-measured physical and chemical properties, increasing soil water retention capacity, soil nutrients, and saturated hydraulic properties. The growth performances of barley and wheat crops were enhanced by BC application, which significantly increased grain yield by around 6- and 2-folds at 15 t ha −1 compared to the control, respectively. The BC application demonstrated its usefulness in reducing the impact of drought conditions by maintaining better moisture content between rainfall events. Based on the output, we suggest that the BC application rate at 15 t ha −1 can be used to improve barley and wheat growth under rainfed conditions. Nevertheless, research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of BC from different feedstocks in improving soil properties in the field and plant development and performance.

Biochar Enhances Soil Resource Availability and Suppresses Microbial Metabolism Genes in the Rhizosphere of Wheat

Abstract:Despite the well-documented role of biochar in promoting soil quality and crop productivity, the underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we explored the effects of straw biochar on soil microbiome in the rhizosphere from wheat using metagenomic sequencing. Our results showed that straw return decreased the yields of wheat, while the straw biochar return increased the wheat yields. Further, both the richness and community composition confirmed different effects of the straw return and straw biochar return. The straw biochar return also resulted in greater rhizosphere effects from wheat, represented by resource availability, including soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium. The rhizosphere effects from wheat, represented by microbial metabolism genes involved in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium cycling, however, were decreased by straw biochar returning. In addition, the rhizosphere effects from nitrogen content and the nitrogen cycling genes showed negative relationships with wheat yields. Together, these results revealed that straw biochar enhanced soil resource availability but suppressed microbial metabolism genes in the rhizosphere from wheat, supporting the idea that straw biochar serves as a nutrient pool for crops.
Maximizing Crop Yield and Water Productivity Through Biochar Application: A Global Synthesis of Field Experiments

Abstract:Thus far, a series of field experiments have been conducted across the globe to investigate the effects of biochar on crop productivity. However, a comprehensive evaluation of the improvement potential of crop yield, water use, and relevant underlying drivers after adding biochar remains lacking. A synthesis based on global field experiments was conducted herein to investigate the efficacy of biochar in crop-yield and water-use improvement, taking a range of potential impacting factors into account. The results showed that biochar significantly increased crop yield and crop water productivity (WPc), by 11.2 % and 14.8 %, respectively, but caused a significant decline (1.8 %) in crop evapotranspiration (ETc). The highest crop-yield improvement was reached at an application rate of > 20 t ha−1 in the initial year after adding biochar. Low C/N, high pyrolysis temperature, low pH, and wood-based raw materials were found to be beneficial biochar properties for increasing crop production. Biochar generally performed better in soils of low pH and low fertility, especially in hot and humid climates. There was a higher increase in crop yield for corn compared with those for wheat and rice. In addition, changes in WPc were generally commensurate with those of crop yield in most scenarios. Conditions beneficial for crop-yield improvement tend to result in a higher increase in WPc through their effects on ETc. Overall, this study illustrates that crop yield improvement is closely related to improvements in both soil fertility and water use. The latter represents an important factor related to crop growth and productivity through the regulation of evaporation and transpiration after biochar amendment. Despite the promising performance of biochar in promoting crop yield and WPc, a further challenge involves ways to maximize the effects of biochar across global croplands by properly considering the impacting factors during the process of policy design and implementation.
Microbial consortia and biochar as sustainable biofertilisers: Analysis of their impact on wheat growth and production

Abstract:The European Union is among the top wheat producers in the world, but its productivity relies on adequate soil fertilisation. Biofertilisers, either alone or in combination with biochar, can be a preferable alternative to chemical fertilisers. However, the addition of biofertilisers, specifically plant growth promoting microbes (PGPM), could modify grain composition, and/or deteriorate the soil composition. In this study, the two wheat cultivars Triticum aestivum (Bramante) and T. durum (Svevo) were cultivated in open fields for two consecutive years in the presence of a commercial PGPM mix supplied alone or in combination with biochar. An in-depth analysis was conducted by collecting physiological and agronomic data throughout the growth period. The effects of PGPM and biochar were investigated in detail; specifically, soil chemistry and rhizosphere microbial composition were characterized, along with the treatment effects on seed storage proteins. The results demonstrated that the addition of commercial microbial consortia and biochar, alone or in combination, did not modify the rhizospheric microbial community; however, it increased grain yield, especially in the cultivar Svevo (increase of 6.8 %–13.6 %), even though the factors driving the most variations were associated with both climate and cultivar. The total gluten content of the flours was not affected, whereas the main effect of the treatments was a variation in gliadins and low-molecular-weight-glutenin subunits in both cultivars when treated with PGPM and biochar. This suggested improved grain quality, especially regarding the viscoelastic properties of the dough, when the filling period occurred in a dry climate. The results indicate that the application of biofertilisers and biochar may aid the effective management of sustainable wheat cultivation, to support environmental health without altering the biodiversity of the resident microbiome.

Abstract:Field studies of biochar addition to soil and nutrient cycling using 15N fertilizers in temperate agriculture are scant. These data are required in order to make evidence based assessments. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that biochar application can increase crop yields through improving the nitrogen uptake and utilization of added inorganic fertilizer, whilst sequestering significant quantities of carbon. Results showed that although biochar addition led to significant spring barley grain yield increases in the first year of biochar application, an unusually dry year; this was possibly not solely the result of improved nitrogen uptake, as total crop N was similar in both treatments. Results suggested it was improved water utilization, indicated by the crop carbon isotope values and soil moisture characteristics. In the second year, there were no significant effects of the previous year’s biochar addition on the sunflower yield, N status, fertilizer recovery or any signs of improved water utilization. These data add to a growing body of evidence, suggesting that biochar addition has only slightly positive or neutral effects on crop growth and fertilizer retention but has the potential to sequester vast amounts of carbon in the soil with minimal yield losses in temperate agriculture.

Abstract:Biochar is a porous, carbon-rich material derived from the thermochemical decomposition of biomass materials. Biochars are suitable soil amendments that enhance soil properties and improve crop productivity. Biochar agronomic impact in soils depends on its physiochemical properties. Recent research has shown that feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature are the key factors influencing biochar physiochemical properties. However, an in-depth understanding of the biochar-soil-plant co-relationship governing biochar agronomic performance still needs improvement. A comprehensive overview of the effect of biomass and pyrolysis temperature on biochar properties, mechanisms governing biochar-soil interactions impact on agronomic indices, the long-term effect of biochar, and the viability of large-scale biochar agricultural systems have been discussed. The mechanisms governing the impact of temperature and biomass properties on biochar agronomic properties are different for low temperature ( 500 °C). The agronomic benefits of biochar are dependent on biochar-soil-plant interaction mechanisms. The economic and financial feasibility of large-scale production of biochar is case-specific and makes business sense when all co-pyrolysis products are recovered and sold. Understanding biochar-soil-plant-climate interaction mechanisms is key to designing biochars to address specific agronomic needs and requires an interdisciplinary and multiscale approach. Future studies should focus on long-term co-relationships among biochar physiochemical properties, soil conditions, climate, and farm management.

Abstract:Biochars provide several agricultural and environmental benefits, such as soil health improvement, better crop growth and yield, carbon sequestration, decreasing greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, and regulation of nutrient dynamics. This review highlights the role of biochar in transforming the soil's physiochemical and biological properties, and their impact on improving seed germination and seedling growth, altering crop physiological attributes, enhancing crop resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses, improving crop productivity, curtailing GHGs, and controlling nutrient leaching losses. However, the type of feedstock used, pyrolysis temperature, application rate and method, soil type and crop species largely influence the biochar performance under different environmental conditions. Application of biochars at low rates help to promote seed germination and seedling growth. Biochar modified the abiotic and microbial processes in the rhizosphere and increased nutrient mineralization and enhanced the nutrient availability for plant uptake. Hence, biochar enhanced the plant resistance against diseases, reduced the availability of heavy metals and improved the plant resilience against environmental stressors. By providing a comprehensive analysis about the variable impacts of biochars on soil physicochemical properties, plant growth, development and productivity and mitigating environmental problems, this review is quite valuable for developing an efficient soil and crop specific biochar with desired functionalities. It could be helpful in improving crop productivity, ensuring food security and better management of environment. Furthermore, this review identifies the knowledge gaps and suggests future outlooks for the commercialization of biochar applications on large-scale.

Abstract:Biochar can improve soil health and crop productivity. We studied the response of soil properties and wheat growth to four rates of wood biochar (0, 11.2, 22.4, and 44.8 Mg ha−1) and two fertilizer rates [no fertilizer and fertilizer (90 kg N ha−1, 45 kg P ha−1, and 20 kg S ha−1)]. Biochar application increased soil organic matter (SOM), soil pH, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S) contents, and the shoot and root biomass of wheat. However, these responses were observed at biochar rates below 22.4 Mg ha−1, particularly in treatments without fertilizer. In fertilizer-applied treatments, soil nitrate levels decreased with an increase in biochar rates, mainly due to better crop growth and high nitrate uptake. However, without N addition, the high C:N ratio (500:1) possibly increased nutrient tie-up, reduced plant biomass, and SOM buildup at the highest biochar rate. Based on these results, we recommend biochar rates of about 22.4 Mg ha−1 and below for Walla Walla silt loams.

Abstract:We synthesized 20 years of research to explain the interrelated processes that determine soil and plant responses to biochar. Biochar properties and its effects within agricultural ecosystems largely depend on feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. We describe three stages of reactions of biochar in soil: dissolution (1-3 weeks); reactive surface development (1-6 months); and aging (beyond 6 months). As biochar ages, it is incorporated into soil aggregates, protecting the biochar carbon and promoting stabilization of rhizodeposits and microbial products. Biochar carbon persists in soil for hundreds to thousands of years. By increasing pH, porosity and water availability, biochars can create favorable conditions for root development and microbial functions. Biochars can catalyze biotic and abiotic reactions, particularly in the rhizosphere, that increase nutrient supply and uptake by plants, reduce phytotoxins, stimulate plant development and increase resilience to disease and environmental stressors. Meta-analyses found that biochars increase P availability 4.6 times, on average; decrease plant tissue concentration of heavy metals by 17-39%; build soil organic carbon through negative priming by 3.8% (range -21-20%); and reduce non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from soil by 12-50%. Meta-analyses show average crop yield increases of 10-42% with biochar addition, with greatest increases in low-nutrient P-sorbing acidic soils (common in the tropics) and in sandy soils in drylands due to increase in nutrient retention and water holding capacity. Studies report a wide range of plant responses to biochars due to the diversity of biochars and contexts in which biochars have been applied. Crop yields increase strongly if site-specific soil constraints and nutrient/water limitations are mitigated by appropriate biochar formulations. Biochars can be tailored to address site constraints through feedstock selection, by modifying pyrolysis conditions, through pre- or post-production treatments, or co-application with organic or mineral fertilizers. We demonstrate how, when used wisely, biochar mitigates climate change, and supports food security and the circular economy.

Abstract:Abstract Background Fostering plant growth and improving agricultural yields by adding “macro”-sized biochar to soil has been extensively explored. However, the impact and mechanism of action of aqueous extracts of biochar applied as foliar fertilizer on plant growth and physiology is poorly understood, and was the objective of this study. Extracts were produced from biochars derived from pine wood:clay:sand (PCS-BC; 70:15:15) and wheat straw:bird manure (WB-BC; 50:50) and tested at two dilutions each. The plant influence of the biochar extracts and dilutions were compared with chemical fertilizer made up to the same minor trace element compositions as the applied extracts and a control treatment consisting of only deionized water. Results The WB-BC extract was more alkaline than the PCS-BC extract and exhibited higher electrical conductivity values. Similar to the biochars from which they were derived, the WB-BC extract had higher concentrations of dissolved mineral elements and organic matter than the PCS-BC extract. Despite major differences in chemical composition between the PCS-BC and WB-BC extracts, there was virtually no difference in plant performance between them at any chosen dilution. Foliar application of PCS25, WB50, and WB100 led to a significant increase in the plant fresh biomass in comparison to their corresponding chemical fertilizer and to deionized water. Plant growth parameters including number of leaves and chlorophyll contents in plants treated with biochar extract foliar sprays were significantly higher than in all the other treatments. Electron microscopy and spectroscopy studies showed the deposition of macro- and nanoscale organomineral particles and agglomerates on leaf surfaces of the examined PCS25-treated plant. Detailed study suggests that carbon nanomaterials and TiO 2 or Si-rich nanoscale organomineral complexes or aluminosilicate compounds from biochar extract were main contributors to increased plant growth and improved plant performance. Conclusion These results suggest that biochar extracts have the potential to be used as nanofertilizer foliar sprays for enhancing plant growth and yield.
