Abstract:Extensive use of plastic film mulch has resulted in accumulation of a large amount of residual plastic, which will eventually fragment into microplastics in agricultural soils. However, it is unclear how microplastics from plastic mulch film affect crops. To address this issue, rice plants exposed to microplastics derived from poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)-based biodegradable mulch film (BM) and polyethylene (PE) mulch film (PM) were investigated for plant growth, physio-biochemical processes, and gene expressions. Both types of microplastics significantly reduced the height and dry weight of rice plant. Oxidative stress was induced by microplastics in rice shoot and root, with levels of ROS relatively higher under treatment PM than that under treatment BM. Transcriptomic data showed that more genes were down-regulated by treatment PM than that by treatment BM. Genes encoding ammonium and nitrate transporters were down-regulated by both types of microplastics in rice roots at vegetative stage, whereas up-regulated at reproductive stage, as compared to their respective treatment with no microplastics (CK). Similar results regarding phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway and lignin content were also observed in rice roots. Net photosynthetic rate and SPAD value were significantly inhibited by treatments BM and PM in rice shoot, and the expression of genes involved in light reaction was reduced at vegetative stage, whereas there were no differences of them at reproductive stage, as compared to their respective treatment CK. Our study suggests that microplastics from BM and PM both affect the growth of rice plants via nitrogen metabolism and photosynthesis. The negative effects imposed by both types of microplastics on rice plant can be mitigated with the growth of plants, and the negative effects of microplastics from PE mulch film on rice plant are relatively stronger than that from the PBAT-based biodegradable film.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) presence in agricultural soils can affect plant growth and impact the quality of agricultural products. To investigate the effect of polyamide (PA) NPs and polyethylene (PE) NPs on carbohydrate metabolism and soil microorganisms during rice growth, rice seedlings were exposed to soil containing 2 g/kg of 100 nm PA or 100 nm PE powder for 33 d. The results revealed that 100 nm PE reduced shoot length and dry weight of rice by 4.14 % and 15.68 %, respectively. Analyzing the expression of hexokinase-2 ( HXK ), phosphofructokinase-1 ( PFK ), pyruvate kinase ( PK ) and isocitrate dehydrogenase ( IDH ), which are four genes related to carbohydrate metabolism, 100 nm PA decreased the expression of PFK and increased the expression of PK and IDH . 100 nm PE increased the expression of HXK , PFK , PK , and IDH . The results of soil microorganisms showed that 100 nm PA significantly effects on 3 bacterial phyla (Bacteroidota, Deinococcota, and Desulfobacterota), whereas 100 nm PE significantly effects on phylum Rozellomycota, class Umbelopsidomycetes, and an unclassified Firmicutes. Our study provides direct evidence of the negative effects of PA and PE on rice, which may be important for assessing the risk of NPs on agroecosystems.

Abstract:Agricultural soil has been recognized as a major sink of microplastic, an emerging pollutant to environmental biodiversity and ecosystem. However, the impacts of microplastic on soil–plant systems (e.g., crop growth, grain yield and amino acid content, nitrogen uptake capacity, and soil properties) remain largely unknown. Four typical microplastics, i.e., polythene (PE, 200 μm), polyacrylonitrile (PAN, 200 μm), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in diameter of 200 μm and 10 μm (PET200 and PET10), were tested to assess the consequent aforementioned responses under rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy soil in a mesocosm experiment. Microplastics multiply influenced the soil pH, NH4+-N and NO3−-N contents, which effects were depended on the rice growth stage and plastic type. Overall, microplastics significantly decreased the soil urease activity by 5.0–12.2% (P < 0.05). When exposed to PAN and PET (in both diameter of 200 μm and 10 μm), there were significantly 22.2–30.8% more grain yield produced, compared to the control (P < 0.05), which was attributing to the higher nitrogen uptake capacity of rice grain. Meanwhile, microplastics exhibited nominal influences on rice plant height, tillering number, leaf SPAD, and NDVI. The amino acids were affected by microplastic, depending on the types of plastics and amino acids. This study provides evidence that microplastic can affect the development and final grain yield, amino acid content, nitrogen uptake capacity of rice, and some major soil properties, while these effects vary as a function of plastic type. Our findings highlight the positive impacts that could occur when the presence of microplastics in paddy soil.

Abstract:Soil pollution by microplastics (MPs) from different types of agricultural films has received substantial attention due to its potential effects on crop quality. To date, the effects of different types of MPs on rice grain quality and their underlying molecular mechanisms have not been clarified. In this study, we examined the effects of polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) and biodegradable polylactic acid MPs (PLA-MPs) on rice grain quality at the environmental level (0.5 %) and evaluated the molecular mechanism through transcriptome analysis. PE- and PLA-MPs increased the number of rice grains per plant by 19.83 % and 24.66 %, respectively, and decreased the rice empty-shell rate by 55.89 % and 26.53 %, respectively. However, PLA-MPs increased the 1000-seed weight by 11.37 %, whereas PE-MPs had no obvious impact in this respect. Furthermore, MP exposure, especially that of PE-MPs, affected the content of mineral elements, fatty acids, and amino acids of rice grains by disturbing the expression of genes related to these functions and metabolism. Our findings provide insights into the response of rice grains to the stress caused by different MPs.

Abstract:Microplastic accumulation in agricultural soils can stress plants and affects quality of the products. Current research on the effects of microplastics on plants is not consistent and the underlying mechanisms are yet unknown. Here, the molecular mechanisms of the stress response were investigated via metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of rice Oryza sativa L. II Y900 and XS123 under the exposure of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in a field study. Distinct responses were obtained in these two rice subspecies, showing decreased head rice yield by 10.62% in Y900 and increase by 6.35% in XS123. The metabolomics results showed that PS-MPs exposure inhibited 29.63% of the substance accumulation-related metabolic pathways and 43.25% of the energy expenditure-related metabolic pathways in the Y900 grains; however, these related pathways were promoted in the XS123 grains. The transcriptomics results indicated that the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle in the Y900 grains was inhibited, but it was enhanced in the XS123 grains. The XS123 subspecies could response against microplastic exposure stress through the metabolite accumulation and energy expenditure pathways, while the Y900 could not. The results provide insight into the perturbation of rice grains in farmlands with microplastics contamination.

Abstract:Polyethylene film is the most widely used plastic film in agricultural production activities, and its depolymerization products are mainly polyethylene-particles (PE-particles) of different molecular weights. However, the impact of the molecular weights of the PE-particles on soil-crop microenvironment has not been elucidated. In this study, a potted microcosmic simulation system was used to evaluate the impact of low, medium and high molecular weight PE-particles on soil metabolism, microbial community structure, and crop growth. There were obvious differences in the shape and surface microstructure of PE-particles with different molecular weights. Soil sucrase and peroxidase had significant responses to PE-particles of different molecular weights. In the rhizosphere, the number of microorganisms and the microbial alpha diversity index increased with increasing PE-particles molecular weight. Rhizobacter, Nitrospira, and Sphingomonas were the dominant microorganisms induced by PE-particles to regulate the metabolism of elements. Carbohydrate and amino acid contents in rhizosphere soils were the key factors affecting the species abundance of Lysobacter, Polyclovorans, Rhizobacter, and Sphingomonas. In plants, PE-particles treatment reduced the plant biomass and photosynthetic rate and disrupted normal mineral nutrient metabolism. Different molecular weight PE-particles may therefore have adverse effects on the soil-plant system.

Abstract:In this study, the interaction between primary/secondary PE MPs and soil – microbiome - crop complex system and PE MPs enrichment behavior in crops were studied by using the self-developed quantitative characterization method of Eu-MPs and in situ zymography. The results demonstrated for the first time the enrichment effect of micron-sized PE (> 10 μm) in crops, manifested as roots>leaves>stems. Primary PE MPs significantly increased soil TN, TC, SOM and β-glu activity and inhibited Phos activity. Age-PE MPs significantly reduced soil TN, TP, β-glu and Phos activities and also have significant inhibitory effects on plant height, stem diameter, and leaf dry weight of maize. Age-PE MPs significantly affected soil microbial diversity, mainly caused by bacterial genera such as UTCFX1, Sphingomonas, Subgroup-6 and Gemmatimonas. Age-PE MPs also affected some metabolism related to microbial community composition and maize growth, including Glycerolipid, Citrate cycle (TCA cycle), C5-Branched dibasic acid, Arginine and proline, Tyrosine metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, Valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis. These research results indicated that the PE MPs, which are widely present in farmland soils, can affect crop growth, soil microbial community and metabolic function after aging, thus affecting agroecosystems and terrestrial biodiversity.

Abstract:Concerns regarding microplastic contamination have spread from aquatic environments to terrestrial systems with a growing number of studies have been reported. Notwithstanding, the potential effects on soil ecosystems remain largely unexplored. In this study, the effects of polyethylene microplastics on soil enzymatic activities and the bacterial community were evaluated, and the microbiota colonizing on microplastics were also investigated. Microplastic amendment (2000 fragments per kg soil) significantly increased the urease and catalase activities in soil after 15 days, and no discernible alteration of invertase activities was detected. Results from high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA revealed that the alpha diversities (richness, evenness, and diversity) of the microbiota in soil were not obviously changed by the PE amendment, whereas the diversity indexes of microbiota on plastic fragments were significantly lower than those in the control and amended soils. Different taxonomic composition was observed in between the control and amended soils after 90 days of incubation. Bacterial assemblages with distinct community structure colonized the PE microplastics. Additionally, several taxa including plastic-degrading bacteria and pathogens were more abundant on microplastics. Simultaneously, the predicted functional profiles showed that the pathways of amino acid metabolism and xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism were higher on the microplastics. These results indicated that microplastics in soil, compared with those in aquatic environments, can also act as a distinct microbial habitat, potentially altering the ecological functions of soil ecosystems.
Unveiling the detrimental effects of polylactic acid microplastics on rice seedlings and soil health

Abstract:The environmental impact of biodegradable polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs) has become a global concern, with documented effects on soil health, nutrient cycling, water retention, and crop growth. This study aimed to assess the repercussions of varying concentrations of PLA-MPs on rice, encompassing aspects such as growth, physiology, and biochemistry. Additionally, the investigation delved into the influence of PLA-MPs on soil bacterial composition and soil enzyme activities. The results illustrated that the highest levels of PLA-MPs (2.5%) impaired the photosynthesis activity of rice plants and hampered plant growth. Plants exposed to the highest concentration of PLA-MPs (2.5%) displayed a significant reduction of 51.3% and 47.7% in their root and shoot dry weights, as well as a reduction of 53% and 49% in chlorophyll a and b contents, respectively. The activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in rice leaves increased by 3.1, 2.8, 3.5, and 5.2 folds, respectively, with the highest level of PLA-MPs (2.5%). Soil enzyme activities, such as CAT, urease, and dehydrogenase (DHA) increased by 19.2%, 10.4%, and 22.5%, respectively, in response to the highest level of PLA-MPs (2.5%) application. In addition, PLA-MPs (2.5%) resulted in a remarkable increase in the relative abundance of soil Proteobacteria , Nitrospirae , and Firmicutes by 60%, 31%, and 98.2%, respectively. These findings highlight the potential adverse effects of PLA-MPs on crops and soils. This study provides valuable insights into soil-rice interactions, environmental risks, and biodegradable plastic regulation, underscoring the need for further research.

The joint toxicity of polyethylene microplastic and phenanthrene to wheat seedlings

Abstract:<p>Due to wide distribution, easy production, and difficult degradation, microplastic pollution has become a new environmental problem that has attracted worldwide attention. However, there is little information about the effects of microplastics in soil and their combined pollution with other organic pollutants on crop growth. In this study, we conducted soil culture experiments to evaluate the effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) (0.5%, 1%, 2%, 5%, 8% w/w) individual and combined with phenanthrene (100 mg kg<sup>−1</sup>) on wheat growth for 15 days. Under PE-MPs alone and combined with phenanthrene exposure, dose-dependent toxicities in biomass, shoot height and root length were observed. Over 1% PE-MPs stimulate wheat root elongation. Compared with single phenanthrene treatment, the co-contamination of PE-MPs and phenanthrene reduces the accumulation of phenanthrene in wheat roots and leaves. In the range of 0–5%, the activity of wheat root antioxidant enzymes increases with increasing PE-MP concentration; but both phenanthrene and high concentrations (8%) of PE-MPs cause damage to the antioxidant system in wheat roots. In the presence or absence of phenanthrene, the photosynthetic pigment concentration of wheat leaves shows a dual concentration effect of low promotion and high inhibition under PE-MPs stress. The single pollution of PE-MPs destroys the photosynthetic system of wheat leaves, while the co-contamination of PE-MPs and phenanthrene exacerbates this destruction. Therefore, the co-contamination of PE-MPs and phenanthrene causes greater damage to wheat growth. Our findings can help to evaluate the individual and comprehensive toxicity of microplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to crops.</p>

Abstract:In the agricultural lands of China, polyethylene is the main component of microplastics （MPs）, with characteristics such as small size, wide distribution, easy accumulation, and difficult degradation. Therefore, it may have an impact on the elemental cycling process of the soil. On the basis of reviewing the key literatures in the past few years, this study systematically analyzed and summarized the key factors and processes of the polyethylene microplastics （PE-MPs） affecting soil nitrogen transformation. On the one hand, PE-MPs directly affected the activities of microorganisms and key enzymes related to soil nitrogen transformation by enriching microorganisms, selecting colonized microbial populations, and releasing additives. On the other hand, PE-MPs had indirect impacts on the activities of microorganisms and key enzymes related to soil nitrogen transformation by affecting soil physicochemical properties of soil and changing the microenvironment for microbial growth. Moreover, phthalates, an important additive of the MPs, may be the key factor affecting soil nitrogen transformation in the short-term. Finally, we posed key scientific issues that should be further studied in order to provide scientific support for nitrogen nutrition regulation and ecological risk assessment of soils contaminated by PE-MPs.
Potential impact of polyethylene microplastics on the growth of water spinach ( Ipomoea aquatica F.): Endophyte and rhizosphere effects

Abstract:Microplastic contamination has received much attention, especially in agroecosystems. However, since edible crops with different genetic backgrounds may present different responses to microplastics, more research should be conducted and focused on more edible crops. In the current study, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the potential impact of polyethylene microplastic (PE) (particle sizes: 0.5 μm and 1.0 μm, addition levels: 0 (control), 0.5% and 1.0% (w/w)) addition on the physiological and biochemical variations of I. aquatica F.. The results indicated that PE addition caused an increase in the soil pH and NH 4 + -N and soil organic matter contents, which increased by 10.1%, 29.9% and 50.1% when PE addition at A10P0.5 level (10 g (PE) kg −1 soil, particle size: 0.5 μm). While, PE exposure resulted in a decrease in soil available phosphorus and total phosphorus contents, which decreased by 53.9% and 10.5% when PE addition at A10P0.5 level. In addition, PE addition altered the soil enzyme activities . Two-way ANOVA indicated that particle size had a greater impact on the variations in soil properties and enzyme activities than the addition level. PE addition had a strong impact on the rhizosphere microbial and root endophyte community diversity and structure of I. aquatica F.. Two-way ANOVA results indicated that the particle size and addition level significantly altered the α-diversity indices of both rhizosphere microbial and root endophyte ( P < 0.05, P < 0.01 or P < 0.001). Moreover, PE was adsorbed by I. aquatica F., which was clearly observed in the transverse roots and significantly increased the H 2 O 2 , ·O 2 − , malondialdehyde and ascorbic acid contents in both the roots and aerial parts of I. aquatica F., leading to a decrease in I. aquatica F. biomass. Overall, the current study enriches the understanding of the effect of microplastics on edible crops.

Abstract:Accumulation of micro-plastics (MPs) in the environment has resulted in various ecological and health concerns. Nowadays, however, studies are mainly focused on toxicity of MPs on aquatic organisms, but only a few studies assess the toxic effects of micro-plastics on terrestrial plants, especially edible agricultural crops. The present study was aimed to investigate the adverse effects of polyethylene (PE) microplastics on the germination of two common food crops of China, i.e., soybean (Glycine max) and mung bean (Vigna radiata). Both the crops were treated with polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) of two sizes (6.5 μm and 13 μm) with six different concentrations (0, 10, 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg/L). Parameters studied were (i) seed vigor (e.g., germination energy, germination index, vigor index, mean germination speed, germination rate); (ii) morphology (e.g., root length, shoot length) and (iii) dry weight. It was found that the phyto-toxicity of PE-MPs to soybean (Glycine max) was greater than that of mung bean (Vigna radiata). On the 3rd day, the dry weight of soybean was inhibited at different concentrations as compared to the control and the inhibition showed decline with the increase in the concentration of PE-MPs. After the 7th day, the root length of soybean was inhibited by PE-MPs of 13 μm size, and the inhibition degree was positively correlated with the concentration, whereas the root length of mung bean was increased, and the promotion degree was positively correlated with the concentration. Present study indicated the necessity to explore the hazardous effects of different sizes of PE-MPs on the growth and germination process of agricultural crops. Additionally, our results can provide theoretical basis and data support for further investigation on the toxicity of PE-MPs to soybean and mung bean.

Abstract:Microplastic contamination of soil has drawn increased attention due to the ecological harm it poses to the soil ecosystem. However, little is known about how microplastic particle sizes affect soil chemical properties and microbial communities, particularly in purple soil. In this study, a four-week incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) with different particle sizes (i.e., 300 and 600 μm) on soil properties, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), enzyme activities, and microbial communities in purple soil. When compared to 600 μm-PE MPs, 300 μm-PE MPs reduced contents of dissolved organic matter (DOM), EPS, and β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) activity, but increased the cation exchange capacity (CEC). High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the 300 μm-PE MPs resulted in an increase in the phylum Nitrospirae, which is associated with microplastic degradation. The data implied that smaller PE MPs improved the growth of polyethylene-degrading bacteria by adsorbing more EPS and DOM, resulting in the degradation of microplastics. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that smaller PE MPs had lower toxicity to microbial populations than larger PE MPs, increasing the stability of the network. CEC and β-1,4-glucosidase (BG) were found to be the two major factors affecting the microbial communities by redundancy analysis (RDA). The study highlighted how microplastic particle sizes affect soil bacterial communities and soil functions.
Microplastic Has No Effect on Rice Yield and Gaseous N Emission from an Infertile Soil with High Inorganic N Inputs

Abstract:Microplastic might affect the crop yield, nitrogen (N) use efficiency and reactive N losses from agricultural soil systems. However, evaluation of these effects in infertile soil planted with different rice cultivars is lacking. We conducted a soil column experiment to determine the influence of a typical microplastic polyethylene (PE) input into an infertile soil with 270 kg N ha−1 and planted with two rice cultivars, i.e., a common rice Nangeng 5055 (NG) and a hybrid rice Jiafengyou 6 (JFY). The results showed that JFY produced a significantly (p < 0.05) greater grain yield than NG (61.6–66.2 vs. 48.2–52.5 g pot−1) but was not influenced by PE. Overall, PE hardly changed the N use efficiency of NG and JFY. Unexpectedly, PE significantly (p < 0.05) increased the total amino acid content of NG. Compared with JFY, NG volatilized significantly (p < 0.05) more ammonia (NH3) (0.84–0.92 vs. 0.64–0.67 g N pot−1) but emitted equal nitrous oxide (N2O). PE exerted no effect on either NH3 volatilization or the N2O emission flux pattern and cumulative losses of the rice growth cycle, whether with NG or JFY. Some properties of tested soils changed after planting with different rice cultivars and incorporating with microplastic. In conclusion, the rice production, N use efficiency, NH3 volatilization and N2O emission from the N-fertilized infertile soil were pronouncedly influenced by the rice cultivar, but not the PE. However, PE influenced the grain quality of common rice and some properties of tested soils with both rice cultivars.

Abstract:Microplastics are widespread in farmland and threaten soil ecology. However, how different microplastics affect methane emission in paddy soil are still unclear. To address this knowledge gap, three typical microplastics, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride were added to paddy soil with different doses (0.01%, 0.1%, and 1%), and a 50-day incubation experiment was conducted. Compared with polyethylene and polypropylene microplastics, 1% of polyvinyl chloride microplastic resulted in the highest increase in methane production. According to the integrated liquid phase analysis, all three microplastics contributed to the accumulation of humus in the soil solution. Differential microbial taxa analysis indicated that some denitrifying bacteria such as Gemmatimonadetes and Omnitrophicaeota were significantly enriched in 1% polyethylene and polypropylene microplastics groups on day 30, and Rice Cluster I methanogens archaea were enriched specially in the 1% polyvinyl chloride microplastic group. The predicted soil metabolic functions suggested that polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics enhanced oxidative phosphorylation and amino acid reduction pathways. Macromolecular humus induced by microplastics may play a critical role in the dynamic equilibrium of anaerobic systems in paddy soils. These findings highlighted the threat of microplastics in agricultural fields greenhouse gas emissions. The identified quinone reductive metabolic pathways may provide potential strategies to reduce methane emissions.

Abstract:Introduction: Microplastics are characterized by their small size, widespread distribution, and durability, present a significant environmental risk. Despite their omnipresence in terrestrial and aquatic systems, the potential consequences on nutrient cycling remain under-investigated. Microplastics have emerged as a focal point of current research, presenting both a challenge and a frontier in environmental science. Methods: This study explores the effects of microplastics on the high-resolution, in situ distribution and exchange dynamics of key nutrients, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), at the soil-water interface in rice paddies, utilizing the Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) technique. Results: Our results reveal distinct spatial distribution patterns for N and P across the soil-water interface. Labile phosphorus (P) concentrations were significantly higher in the soil than in the overlying water, whereas DGT-NO 3 − concentrations exhibited the inverse trend. Different microplastic concentrations notably impacted DGT-NO 3 − ( P = 0.022) and DGT-NH 4 + ( P = 0.033), with an increase between 27.79% and 150.68%. Moreover, different particle sizes significantly influenced NH 4 + . Interestingly, paddy soil acted as a "source" for labile P and a "sink" for NH 4 + and NO 3 − . Discussion: These insights provide valuable insights into the interactions between microplastics and nutrient cycles at the soil-water interface, and assess the effects on nutrient migration and transformation. The outcomes of this study will contribute to an improved understanding of the broader ecological implications of microplastic pollution in agricultural settings. It will also provide a foundation for the development of strategies to manage and mitigate the impacts of microplastic pollution in agricultural soils, particularly in rice dominated agroecosystems.

Abstract:Plastic film mulching is an important agricultural technology that plays a critical role in increasing crop yield and maintaining soil moisture. However, long-term coverage and untimely recovery lead to a large amount of plastic residues in soils. This decomposes into smaller plastics over time, which can reduce sowing quality, destroy the soil structure, and have adverse effects on soil organisms. In this study, the seasonal variations and correlations of microplastics and cadmium (Cd) in Wuxi farmland soils of Taihu Lake, China, were investigated in the spring and winter. The microplastics were mainly in the form of films, fibers, and debris and were mainly transparent and black in color. Microplastic abundance reached 890 particles/kg soil, with the majority of microplastics (>72.5%) being 0-500 mu m. Polyethylene microplastics were the main polymers, accounting for >54.65%. In addition, the abundance of soil microplastics in the winter was significantly correlated with Cd, indicating that microplastics and heavy metals present a risk of coexposure to soil organisms. Furthermore, the response of in situ earthworms to microplastic-Cd pollution revealed that microplastics can be used as a vector to transfer heavy metals in the soil environment and may accumulate in the bodies of soil organisms. Multiomics techniques demonstrated bacterial community structure dysbiosis and metabolic changes of in situ earthworms under microplastic heavy metal-contaminated soils. The abundance of microplastics in earthworm casts and intestines was higher than that in the soil samples. These results reveal the potential risks from microplastics entering the soil environment and heavy metal pollution in soil ecosystems.
Impact of microplastic residues from polyurethane films on crop growth: Unraveling insights through transcriptomics and metabolomics analysis

Abstract:The utilisation of coated controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) leads to the persistence of residual plastic films in agricultural soils, posing a potential threat to crop health. This study investigates the impacts of four residual films (0.39 %, w/w) derived from CRFs in soil, including petrochemical polyether, bio-based polyether, castor oil polyester, and wheat straw polyester polyurethane on wheat growth. This study found that PecPEUR significantly reduced wheat plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, and aboveground fresh weight by 24.8 %, 20.2 %, and 25.7 %. Through an in-depth exploration of transcriptomics and metabolomics, it has been discovered that all residual films disrupted glycolysis-related metabolic pathways in wheat roots, affecting seedling growth. Among them, PecPEUR significantly reduced the fresh weight of aboveground parts by 20.5 %. In contrast, polyester polyurethane residue had no discernible impact on aboveground wheat growth. This was attributed to the enrichment of wheat root genes in jasmonic acid and γ-aminobutyric acid metabolic pathways, thus mitigating oxidative stress, enhancing stress resistance, and ensuring normal plant growth. This study, for the first time, provides comprehensive insights into the effects of polyurethane film residue on wheat seedling growth, underscoring its potential as a promising alternative to conventional plastics in soil.
