Abstract:In China, Rapid economic growth has stimulated fast urban expansion and rural household income and consumption expenditure. In current paper, an input–output method is used to determine the impact of China’s increased urban and rural household consumption on carbon emissions. The results shows that the direct and indirect CO2 emission from household consumption accounted for more than 40% of total carbon emissions from primary energy utilization in China in 1992–2007. The population increase, expansion of urbanization and the increase of household consumption per capita all contribute to an increase of indirect carbon emissions, while carbon intensity decline mitigates the growth of carbon emissions. Therefore, at the domestic level, household consumption is of great significance for CO2 emission, which could be mitigated through changing the composition of goods and services consumed by households, and switching to consumption pattern of less carbon-intensive products. The government must consider the substantial contribution of household consumption to carbon emissions when China is encouraging consumption in order to address the current global financial crisis.
Spatiotemporal Variations and Driving Forces of Per Capita Carbon Emissions from Energy Consumption in China

Abstract:The carbon emissions vary over space and time in China, as well as driving forces. It is particularly important to analyze the spatiotemporal variations and driving factors of China’s per capita carbon emissions. This study adopted global Moran’ I and local indicators of spatial association to analyze the spatial autocorrelation of per capita carbon emissions in China during 2004–2019 and discussed the driving factors of per capita carbon emissions by geographically and temporally weighted regression model. The results demonstrated a positive spatial correlation between inter-provincial per capita carbon emissions, but this correlation has gradually decreased since 2008. The High-High clusters were concentrated in the Bohai Economic Rim and the Low-Low clusters were mainly located in the south. Driving factors of per capita carbon emission at the provincial level have spatiotemporal heterogeneity. From 2004 to 2019, per capita GDP, urbanization rate, and energy intensity are the main contributors to per capita carbon emissions, and the role of per capita GDP is weakening, while urbanization rate and energy intensity change in the opposite direction. Foreign direct investment is the main disincentive in most regions. These findings provided a reference for emission reduction policies implemented in different regions.

Abstract:Food systems emissions (FSE) account for one-third of anthropogenic GHGs. Mitigating these emissions is pivotal for achieving the 1.5 °C target. Given current research gaps in regional FSE accounting and drivers for China, the world's largest food system emitter, this study constructs a regionally specific, bottom-up FSE inventory detailed by food types and downscales FSE drivers to the provincial level. China's FSE exhibited an initial decline due to energy pattern upgrades during the period of 1990–2000, followed by a rise between 2000 and 2018. Increases were predominantly in developed southern regions and were propelled by economic growth, consumer expenditure, and dietary pattern shifts. This study reveals the spatial heterogeneity of emission sources and drivers, emphasizing the necessity of demand-side mitigation strategies in developed areas. It underscores the importance of formulating regionally differentiated emission reduction and interregional compensation policies.
Spatial–Temporal Heterogeneity and Driving Factors of Rural Residents’ Food Consumption Carbon Emissions in China—Based on an ESDA-GWR Model

Abstract:The increase in income among Chinese residents has been accompanied by dramatic changes in dietary structure, promoting a growth in carbon emissions. Therefore, in the context of building a beautiful countryside, it is of great significance to study the carbon emissions of rural residents’ food consumption to realize the goal of low-carbon food consumption. In this paper, the calculation of food consumption carbon emissions of Chinese rural residents is based on the carbon conversion coefficient method, and the spatial heterogeneity of influencing factors is analyzed with the aid of the ESDA-GWR model. The results indicate that the per capita food consumption carbon emissions of rural residents have increased by 1.68% annually, reaching 336.73 kg CO2-eq in 2020, which is 1.32 times that of 2002. Carbon emissions generated from rural residents’ food consumption have significant spatial agglomeration characteristics, showing the spatial distribution characteristics of a north–south confrontation, with a central area collapse. The influencing factors of food consumption carbon emissions have significant spatial heterogeneity, among which, as the main force to restrain the growth of food consumption carbon emissions, the price factor has a regression coefficient between −0.1 and −0.3, and its influence has weakened from northwest to southeast in 2020. The education–social factor is the main driving force for the growth of food consumption carbon emissions, with a regression coefficient between 0.58 and 0.99, and its influence has increased from east to west. In the future, formulating food consumption optimization policies should be based on the actual situation of food consumption carbon emissions in various regions to promote the realization of low-carbon food consumption.

Abstract:Food consumption is necessary for human survival. On a global scale, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission related to food consumption accounts for 19%–29% of the total GHG emission. China has the largest population in the world, which is experiencing a rapid development. Under the background of urbanization and the adjustment of the diet structure of Chinese residents, it is critical to mitigate the overall GHG emission caused by food consumption. This study aims to employ a singleregion input-output (SRIO) model and a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model to measure GHG emission generated from food consumption in China and compare the contributions of different industrial sectors, uncovering the differences between urban and rural residents and among different provinces (autonomous regions/municipalities), as well as identifying the driving forces of GHG emission from food consumption at a national level. The results indicate that the total GHG emission generated from food consumption in China tripled from 157 Mt CO2e in 2002 to 452 Mt CO2e in 2017. The fastest growing GHG emission is from the consumption of other processed food and meat products. Although GHG emissions from both urban and rural residents increased, the gap between them is increasing. Agriculture, processing and manufacture of food, manufacture of chemical and transportation, storage and post services sectors are key sectors inducing food consumption related GHG emissions. From a regional perspective, the top five emission provinces (autonomous regions/municipalities) include Shandong, Hubei, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu. Based on such results, policy recommendations are proposed to mitigate the overall GHG emission from food consumption.

Abstract:Energy consumption is a major factor influencing climate change. Low-carbon strategies can be defined from carbon (C) footprint and ecological pressure caused by energy consumption. We hypothesized that this should be done at the regional and city levels because factors controlling C footprints vary with location and time, yet there is actually little knowledge at local levels. Here, we mapped the C emissions and footprint of 11 cities in the Zhejiang Province of China, a rapidly growing area of about 57 million inhabitants, which is representative of the strong economic growth in China. The C footprint is expressed as the land surface necessary to adsorb C emissions. We studied spatio-temporal evolution of C footprints from 2005 to 2015 using the center of gravity method. Results show that total annual C emissions due to energy consumption in Zhejiang increased by 40.83 million tons (55.8%) from 2005 to 2011. Then, from 2011 to 2015, C emissions decreased by 5.8%, which is explained by the 5-year national plan aiming at decreasing emissions. Similarly, the total C footprint increased by 55.8% from 29,201,904 hm(2) in 2005 to 45,496,817 hm(2) in 2011 and then declined by 5.8% from 2011 to 2015. At the city level, Ningbo has the largest C footprint contribution, whereas Lishui the lowest. Zhoushan shows an increase in C emissions and footprint, whereas Hangzhou and Shaoxing show a decline. The center of gravity of the C footprint is located in Shaoxing and is moving southeast from 2006 to 2011. Overall, our findings reveal the high spatial heterogeneity of C footprint at the regional and city levels, implying that national low-carbon strategies should be adapted at lower levels for higher efficiency.

Abstract:Nasopharyngeal cultures from 180 children aged 1 to 9 were examined. All children were suffering from cough for at least 10 days. The findings were compared to those from 67 non-coughing children. Bordetella pertussis was isolated from 12.2% of the children in the study group but from none of the control children. Branhamella catarrhalis was isolated from 66.1% of the children in the study group and from 28.3% in the control group (p less than 0.01). Br. catarrhalis was more common in pure cultures from sick children than from control children. Pneumococci were isolated from 20% of the sick children and 28% of the control children. Haemophilus influenzae was isolated from 15% in each group. Some possible interpretations of the findings are discussed.
Carbon emissions changes of animal husbandry in China: Trends, attributions, and solutions: A spatial shift-share analysis

Abstract:China is a major livestock producer confronting the dual challenges of rising demand for animal-based food consumption and decreasing carbon emissions. To effectively address these issues, it is crucial to understand the trends of carbon emissions from animal husbandry and the competitive advantages of carbon emission reduction in different regions. This study uses panel data from 31 provinces from 2004 to 2020 to investigate the contributing factors to carbon emissions and explore ways to reduce carbon intensity in animal husbandry. The analysis employs spatial shift-share analysis and the spatial Durbin model. Our findings indicate that life-cycle carbon emissions associated with animal husbandry in China decreased from 572.411 Mt CO2eq to 520.413 Mt CO2eq over time, with an average annual decline of 0.568 %. The annual contribution of output value and internal industry-mix adjustment to carbon emission growth is 22.639 MT CO2eq and 6.226 MT CO2eq, respectively. On the other hand, the annual contribution of carbon efficiency improvement to carbon emission reduction is much higher, at 36.316 MT CO2eq. However, there is significant regional heterogeneity in the spatial decomposition of the carbon efficiency change component. The Northeastern region, Northwest and along the Great Wall demonstrate neighborhood advantages in enhancing carbon efficiency. In contrast, the South China and Southwest regions rely more on local carbon efficiency advantages to reduce the carbon intensity of animal husbandry. Furthermore, the carbon intensity in local and neighboring areas can be reduced through environmental regulations and industrial agglomeration. While technical progress significantly negatively impacts carbon intensity in neighboring regions, it does not contribute to reducing the carbon intensity of local animal husbandry. The findings provide valuable insights for local governments, aiding them in recognizing the pros and cons of carbon reduction in animal husbandry and strengthening regional cooperation in emission reduction management.
Spatial and Temporal Distribution and the Driving Factors of Carbon Emissions from Urban Production Energy Consumption

Abstract:Urban production energy consumption produces a large amount of carbon emissions, which is an important source of global warming. This study measures the quantity and intensity of carbon emissions in 30 provinces of China based on urban production energy consumption from 2005-2019, and uses the Dagum Gini coefficient, kernel density estimation, carbon emission classification and spatial econometric model to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution and driving factors of quantity and intensity of carbon emissions from China and regional production energy consumption. It was found that the growth rate of carbon emission quantity and carbon emission intensity of production energy consumption decreased year by year in each province during the study period. The imbalance of carbon emission was strong, with different degrees of increase and decrease, and there were big differences between eastern and western regions. The classification of carbon emissions differed among provinces and there was heterogeneity among regions. The quantity and intensity of carbon emissions of production energy consumption qwre affected by multiple factors, such as industrial structure. This study provides an in-depth comparison of the spatial and temporal distribution and driving factors of quantity and intensity of carbon emissions of production energy consumption across the country and regions, and provides targeted policies for carbon emission reduction across the country and regions, so as to help achieve China's "double carbon" target quickly and effectively.
How Urbanization and Ecological Conditions Affect Urban Diet-Linked GHG Emissions: New Evidence from China

Abstract:Unprecedented urbanization is dramatically altering habitual food consumption in urban China, and consequently affecting diet-linked greenhouse gas emissions (DGHGEs). Building on the representative resident survey data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey, this study analyzed urban food consumption profiles and related GHG emissions from a life cycle perspective. Moreover, a CATREG (Categorical Regression) model was conducted to identify influencing factors. Results show that urban residents in China generate an average of 2.92 kg CO(2)e/capita/day, with 1.06 kg of foods consumed. Meat consumption has a dominant role in urban DGHGEs and is the main driver of variation in the DGHGEs. Urbanization level and most demographic factors with regard to household and individual characteristics have significant impacts on urban DGHGEs. However, the resident's awareness of the Chinese Dietary Guideline dose not significantly contribute to promoting low-GHG urban diets. A novel result of this analysis is that local ecological conditions, including geographical climate and resource endowments, have evident effects on urban food consumption and the related GHG emissions, despite the fact that urban areas heavily rely on food resources imported from other regions. Our findings offer knowledge-based inspiration geared to sustainable urban food consumption for both China and other developing countries.
Carbon Emission Effects Driven by Evolution of Chinese Dietary Structure from 1987 to 2020

Abstract:Exploring carbon emission effects based on the evolution of residents' dietary structure to achieve the carbon neutrality goal and mitigate climate change is an important task. This study took China as the research object (data excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) and used the carbon emission coefficient method to quantitatively measure the food carbon emissions from 1987–2020, then analyzed the carbon emission effects under the evolution of dietary structure. The results showed that during the study period, the Chinese dietary structure gradually changed to a high-carbon consumption pattern. The dietary structure of urban residents developed to a balanced one, while that of rural residents developed to a high-quality one. During the study period, the per capita food carbon emissions and total food consumption of Chinese showed an increasing trend. The per capita food carbon emissions of residents in urban and rural showed an overall upward trend. The total food carbon emissions in urban increased significantly, while that in rural increased first and then decreased. The influence of beef and mutton on carbon emissions is the highest in dietary structure. Compared with the balanced dietary pattern, the food carbon emissions of Chinese residents had not yet reached the peak, but were evolving to a high-carbon consumption pattern.

Temporal and Spatial Variations in Consumption-Based Carbon Dioxide Emissions in China

Abstract:China's CO2 emissions have sharply increased in recent years with soaring economic development and urbanization. Consumption-based accounting of CO2 emissions could provide new insights for allocating regional mitigation responsibility and curbing the emissions. A multi-regional input-output model is used to study the trends and disparities of consumption-based emissions from Chinese provinces during the period 2002-2007. Results show that China's consumption-based CO2 emissions grew from 3549 Mt in 2002 to 5403 Mt in 2007 with an annual average growth rate of 8.8%. The annual growth rate in the richer eastern region was over 10% because of a rapid increase in capital investment and the growth of urban consumption. Consumption-based CO2 emissions embodied in interprovincial trades contributed only 10% (351 Mt) to the national total of such emissions in 2002, but 16% (864 Mt) in 2007. Given low per capita emissions currently, China's consumption-based emissions have much room to grow because of further development of urbanization and stimulation of domestic demand. The government should pay greater attention to controlling CO2 emissions from a consumption-based perspective. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Spatial Heterogeneity of Carbon Emissions and Its Influencing Factors in China: Evidence from 286 Prefecture-Level Cities

Abstract:In the face of the severe challenge of global warming, promoting low-carbon emission reductions is an important measure to cope with global climate change and achieve a green cycle of sustainable development. The purpose of this study was to reveal the spatial heterogeneity of carbon emissions and the influencing factors in 286 prefecture-level-and-above cities in China, and to provide an empirical basis for the formulation of low-carbon emission reduction policies in China. This study used a combination of comparative analysis, regional difference analysis, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and stepwise regression analysis to analyze the spatial differences in carbon emissions and their influencing factors in 286 prefecture-level-and-above cities in China, and draws the following main conclusions: (1) From 2005 to 2015, regional differences in six sectors, including household carbon emissions, widened in the 286 prefecture-level-and-above cities in China, while regional differences in 14 sectors, including rural household carbon emissions, narrowed. (2) There were significant intra-group differences in urban household carbon emissions, and the contributions to intra-group differences in carbon emissions differed across the six sectors in the northeast, east, central, and west regions. (3) Although the total and average carbon emissions of each sector increased from 2005 to 2015, China’s carbon emission intensity was decreasing, and carbon productivity is increasing. (4) Carbon emissions per capita (CCE) were positively correlated with GRP per capita, industrial SO2 emissions per capita, and the proportion of employees in the secondary sector, and negatively correlated with population density and the proportion of employees in the tertiary sector. (5) Resident savings and consumption factors, pollution emission factors, and economic structure factors had a facilitating effect on CCE, while population density factors and economic growth factors have a weakening effect on CCE.

Study on Carbon Emission Influencing Factors and carbon emission reduction potential in China's food production industry

Abstract:Climate warming has become a global issue of close concern, and China, as a significant agricultural country, has an increasing demand for food, which requires China to increase carbon reduction in this industry. This paper accounts for carbon emissions from the food production industry (CEFI) using the input-output method, then screens the influencing factors of CEFI based on Random Forest (RF), analyzes the heterogeneous effects of the influencing factors on CEFI in different clusters through K-means-SHAP, and finally explores the potential of carbon emissions from this industry for the period 2024-2040. The study's findings are as follows: First, there are apparent inequalities in CEFI, especially between provinces, which are gradually increasing. Second, addressing people's consumption awareness and behaviors is not the fundamental solution to alleviate CEFI; instead, it should focus on sustainable agricultural production transformation and "food miles" in the transportation phase. In addition, attention needs to be paid to the impacts of fertilizer application, transport modes, and livestock management on the CEFI of each cluster. Finally, the study suggests that around 2028, 70% of China's provinces will be at the "carbon peak" and that less developed and more developed regions have more significant potential to reduce emissions. In this regard, this paper encourages a series of policies that are key to promoting the sustainable development of CEFI, such as reducing the volume and efficiency of traditional fertilizers, vigorously developing organic fertilizer inputs, strengthening technological innovation and R&D inputs in the transportation sector, and steadily supporting germplasm innovation in the livestock sector.
Carbon emissions in China’s urban agglomerations: spatio-temporal patterns, regional inequalities, and driving forces

Abstract:Urban agglomerations are the centers of carbon emissions. However, research on sector-specific carbon emissions in different urban agglomerations is still limited. Drawing on the data of China’s six urban agglomerations in 2005, 2010, and 2015, this study investigates the spatio-temporal patterns, regional inequalities, and driving forces of total, industrial, transportation, and residential carbon emissions. The study found that Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei was the total and sectoral emission center among the studied urban agglomerations. Additionally, regional carbon inequalities gradually decreased, implying a growing regional synergistic carbon pattern. The driving forces of carbon emissions, including population, GDP, energy intensity, secondary industry, tertiary industry, foreign investment, urbanization, and green coverage, varied across sectors and regions. Notably, foreign investment could lead to lower carbon emissions in less developed agglomerations like Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the Central Plains, and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, whereas more developed agglomerations like the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta benefited less from foreign investment. Besides, ChengYu has good ecological conditions and sustainable development modes, which linked urbanization and green space to reduced carbon emissions in the industrial sector. The findings can help formulate differentiated carbon policy and support sustainable development.

Abstract:Residential sector is an important CO2 emitter in China. This study first analyzes spatial-temporal characteristics of residential CO2 emissions (RCE) of China’s 30 provinces from 2000 to 2017, and then identify the key driving forces of RCE from both temporal and spatial perspectives. Main findings includes: (1) Rural residents experienced a relatively higher growth in RCE than the urban; (2) During 2000–2017 population scale effect contributed most of 35.5% to the increase of RCE while energy structure effect was the key element to reduce RCE by 34.1%. Urbanization effect performed an inverted “U-shaped” evolution trajectory; (3) From the spatial perspective, population scale effect, energy structure effect, energy intensity effect and income improvement effect all worked for enlarging the inequality of RCE among provinces, and their average contribution degree were 31.4%, 23.1%, 22.9% and 16.4%, respectively; (4) In order to attain larger mitigation in RCE, Hebei, Inner Mongolia and Shanxi could focus more on the improvement of energy efficiency and structure while Guangdong, Shandong and Jiangsu on low-carbon consumption and travelling. The improved M-R spatial decomposition model could be applied to investigate city-level RCE, and the results help China to design targeted mitigation measures for provincial residential sector.

Abstract:Fossil fuel (FF) CO2 emissions account for the largest portion of human-related CO2 emissions. It is essential to accurately understand the spatial distribution of high-resolution FFCO2 emissions to formulate different carbon emission reduction policies in different regions. Therefore, a sectoral allocation approach was proposed to estimate FFCO2 emissions in China from 2000 to 2021 based on multi-source data. Furthermore, the spatiotemporal characteristics of FFCO2 emissions in different sectors were analyzed at different scales, and the spatial correlation of FFCO2 emissions in the service sector and industrial sector was also evaluated through Moran's index. The results showed that the mean R2 value of the sectoral allocation approach (0.89) exceeds that of the approach using only nighttime light (0.72). Moreover, the calculated results were utilized to analyze the Spatiotemporal variation of FFCO2 emissions. The analysis revealed that China's FFCO2 emissions increased from 3173 Mt in 2000-10662 Mt in 2021. The high emissions of FFCO2 mainly come from the industrial sectors in North China and Central China, as well as the service sectors in the eastern coastal cities and other provincial capital cities. The spatial dependence of FFCO2 emissions in the industrial sector was stronger than that in the service sector, but the spatial dependence of FFCO2 emissions in the service sector showed an increasing trend from 2000 to 2021. These results have important references and implications for region-specific carbon emission reduction policies.
Spatiotemporal evolution of factors affecting agricultural carbon emissions: empirical evidence from 31 Chinese provinces

Abstract:Reducing agricultural carbon emissions is a crucial aspect of China's overall carbon emission reduction plan. In this study, we first analyzed the spatiotemporal trends in agricultural carbon emissions across 31 provinces in China from 2007 to 2020. Subsequently, we employed a geographically and temporally weighted regression model to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of the factors influencing provincial agricultural carbon emissions. Our findings revealed that high carbon emission areas are primarily distributed in the central and northern regions. The center of gravity of carbon emissions is located within Henan Province (112°30′–113°30′ E; 34°10′–33°40′ N) and has gradually shifted in the northwest direction. Therefore, the central, northern, and western regions should become the focal areas for agricultural carbon emission mitigation efforts. The influencing factors demonstrate spatiotemporal heterogeneity in their impacts on agricultural carbon emissions, so differentiated emission mitigation strategies should be formulated according to local conditions. The central and northern regions should prioritize the adoption of green technologies, support zero growth of chemical fertilizers and promotion of organic alternatives, and promote urbanization. Western regions should be encouraged to use less harmful fertilizers and increase mechanization levels. Nationwide, green technology innovation in agriculture should be strengthened to promote sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract:China is actively heeding the call and striving for a low-carbon and environmentally friendly development route as part of the general trend toward a global low-carbon economy. The rapid economic development of our nation has brought to light the issue of carbon emissions resulting from the consumption habits of residents. This paper delves into the topic by conducting a thorough analysis of the carbon emission of residents' consumption using the input-output method. Based on the survey findings, the disparity in carbon emission between urban and rural communities in Shandong Province is evident not only in terms of total emissions but also in different categories and regions. Urban residents generate a total carbon emission of approximately 70.2921 million tons, which is three times higher than that of rural residents at 23.7846 million tons. The carbon emission of both urban and rural residents is primarily attributed to their embodied carbon emission. In examining the composition of the implied carbon emission of residents' consumption in Shandong Province, urban residents' carbon emission is concentrated in three areas, namely, food, culture, education, entertainment, transportation, and communication, accounting for 21.45%, 20.88%, and 15.10%, respectively. Conversely, rural residents' carbon emission is concentrated in four areas, including clothing, food, culture, education, entertainment, transportation, and communication, accounting for 29.01%, 17.45%, 15.43%, and 13.36%, respectively. Finally, according to the characteristics of the consumption carbon emission of urban and rural residents in Shandong Province, we give corresponding emission reduction strategies.

Abstract:Residential CO2 emissions (RCE) are an important component of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In order to formulate reasonable reduction policies and measures, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of RCE production and the factors that influence it. This paper explores the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of RCE from the perspectives of eastern, central, and western China, as well as urban–rural areas, and analyzes the factors driving RCE based on the STIRPAT model. The results indicated that between 2010 and 2019 the eastern region contributed the greatest proportion of overall RCE and the central region saw the largest increase. Per capita RCE in urban areas was greater than in rural areas, except in eastern China. The factors affecting RCE showed regional and urban–rural differences. Population size and income per capita were two dominant factors affecting RCE for all regions. The per capita income plays a more important role in developed regions such as eastern regions and eastern urban areas. Urbanization contributed to RCE reduction in the eastern region but promoted RCE in the central and western regions. Energy structure shows a negative effect on RCE, particularly in central urban and western rural areas. Appropriate policies and measures need to be put forward to local conditions. Reduction policies and measures of each region and urban–rural area need to be based on the dominant factors driving CO2 emissions.
