Abstract:Sports records play a crucial role in understanding the limits of human achievement in sports. However, a thorough exploration of a comprehensive analysis of various sports records utilizing the existing statistical model has been lacking. This study introduces a framework for analyzing the integrated features and evolutionary trends of 23 sports records for men and women. It includes world records and intercontinental records from six continents, covering 6440 athletes from 2001 to 2020. Our findings indicate that human beings have not yet reached sports limits in athletic performance, suggesting a continuous improvement over time. Furthermore, we have investigated the contributions of our model's parameters to the integrated features, emphasizing their robustness and convergence in handling data flow and information entropy. Additionally, our model underscores the significance of integrating various sports for ongoing advancement, in line with the Olympic motto "Together," thereby promoting coordinated development.

Statistical Prediction of Future Sports Records Based on Record Values

Abstract:Point prediction of future record values based on sequences of previous lower or upper records is considered by means of the method of maximum product of spacings, where the underlying distribution is assumed to be a power function distribution and a Pareto distribution, respectively. Moreover, exact and approximate prediction intervals are discussed and compared with regard to their expected lengths and their percentages of coverage. The focus is on deriving explicit expressions in the point and interval prediction procedures. Predictions and forecasts are of interest, e.g., in sports analytics, which is gaining more and more attention in several sports disciplines. Previous works on forecasting athletic records have mainly been based on extreme value theory. The presented statistical prediction methods are exemplarily applied to data from various disciplines of athletics as well as to data from American football based on fantasy football points according to the points per reception scoring scheme. The results are discussed along with basic assumptions and the choice of underlying distributions.

Abstract:Performance prediction is one of the important contents of sports future development strategy research. This paper conducts research on sports performance prediction and influencing factor analysis based on machine learning and big data statistics. The purpose of forecasting research is to formulate short-term, medium-term, and long-term sports development planning and policy services for decision-makers of sports development. Advantages and disadvantages make sports workers consciously revise and realize their own sports future plans. First, the analysis of the influencing factors of sports performance is proposed, including the setting and scoring of sports examination items, research on standards, training methods for physical examination items, and physical examination learning. Second, the application of big data statistics based on machine learning algorithms is studied. Based on machine optimization algorithms, it summarizes the naive Bayesian classification algorithm and big data statistical classification algorithm. The theoretical idea of rough set algorithm and finally through the comparative analysis experiment based on big data statistics of male and female sports test scores and the comparison experiment of the accuracy of three algorithms to predict the results, it is concluded that the endurance quality of boys is better than that of girls, which indicates the quality of sustainable development. There is a certain gender gap, there are significant differences in the skills of male and female students, and the machine-optimized algorithm can predict sports performance with the highest accuracy among the three algorithms.

Acculturation determines BMI percentile and noncore food intake in Hispanic children.

Abstract:Hispanic children in the United States are disproportionately affected by obesity. The role of acculturation in obesity is unclear. This study examined the relation between child obesity, dietary intake, and maternal acculturation in Hispanic children. We hypothesized that children of more acculturated mothers would consume more unhealthy foods and would have higher body mass index (BMI) percentiles. A total of 209 Hispanic mothers of children aged 2-4 y (50% female, 35.3 ± 8.7 mo, BMI percentile: 73.1 ± 27.8, 30% obese, 19% overweight) were recruited for an obesity prevention/reversal study. The associations between baseline maternal acculturation [Brief Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (Brief ARSMA-II)], child BMI percentile, and child diet were examined. Factor analysis of the Brief ARSMA-II in Puerto Rican mothers resulted in 2 new factors, which were named the Hispanic Orientation Score (4 items, loadings: 0.64-0.81) and U.S. Mainland Orientation Score (6 items, loadings: -0.61-0.92). In the total sample, children who consumed more noncore foods were more likely to be overweight or obese (P < 0.01). Additionally, children of mothers with greater acculturation to the United States consumed more noncore foods (P < 0.0001) and had higher BMI percentiles (P < 0.04). However, mothers with greater Hispanic acculturation served fewer noncore foods (P < 0.0001). In the Puerto Rican subgroup of mothers, Puerto Rican mothers with greater acculturation to the United States served more noncore foods (P < 0.0001), but there was no association between acculturation and child BMI percentile in this subgroup. These mothers, however, served fewer sugar-sweetened beverages (P < 0.01) compared with non-Puerto Rican mothers, and this may have negated the effect of noncore food consumption on BMI percentile. These data suggest a complex relation between acculturation, noncore food consumption, and child BMI percentile in Puerto Rican and non-Puerto Rican Hispanic children.

Abstract:With the development of economy, people put forward higher demands on material life and spiritual life, and sports have become an indispensable part of daily life. Ten km freestyle, although it has been started late, is loved by people all over the world, and it is getting more and more attention in the world of competitive sports. Through the theoretical research of 10 km freestyle, it can be seen that most of the research on this project is focused on the training, selection of materials, and how to improve the technique of crossing obstacles or pools, while the research on the performance of 10 km freestyle is limited to the analysis of the development trend of the performance and no research on the prediction of the actual performance, which to some extent restricts the scientific development of 10 km freestyle. The efficiency of a suitable learning is a factor that influences whether the training and learning of a BP neural network is stable or not. It can also directly determine the choice of weights. When the learning rate is chosen to be large, it increases the speed of learning and makes the stability of the network change. This has limited the scientific development of 10 km freestyle to a certain extent, and it is also a good entry point for the research of 10 km freestyle. BP neural network is one of the most widely used neural network models, which can be used for classification, clustering, prediction, and other related problems. In this study, we propose a comprehensive evaluation method of 10 km freestyle performance based on BP neural network and try to establish a neural network evaluation model by combining the athletes' physiological and biochemical indexes and sports performance. In this study, the normalized index values are used as the network input, and the athletes' performance in 10 km freestyle is used as the network output to predict the athletes' performance in 10 km freestyle. This study provides a theoretical basis for adjusting the condition of 10 km freestyle athletes and improving their performance. Optimize the reasonable allocation of resources between coaches and athletes, and increase the opportunities for coaches and athletes to communicate and learn from outside.

Abstract:Outdoor jogging, as a physical exercise beneficial for health, has proliferated worldwide. However, understanding the nonlinear and heterogeneous associations between environmental factors and jogging behavior remains challenging. This study established an explainable spatial machine learning framework combining Geographically Weighted-Random Forest (GW-RF) and SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) model to address the nonlinearity, spatial heterogeneity, and interpretability. Using large-scale GPS trajectories and multi-source big data, this study provides the global and local explanations of nonlinear associations in Beijing, China. Our findings highlight that (1) Built Environment (BE) factors play a more important role than visual landscape factors in determining jogging behavior, with sports facilities such as tracks and parks having higher contributions. (2) All environmental variables, including the BE, visual landscape, and social economics, exhibit nonlinear and threshold effects on jogging behavior. (3) Certain factors such as population density, number of parks, Greening View Index, and Sky View Index exhibit differential effects across different periods, regions, and mobility patterns of jogging. (4) Compared with the Ordinary Least Squares model, Geographically Weighted Regression model, and Random Forest model, GW-RF model demonstrates improved performance in modeling and predicting the jogging flow. The findings have important implications for urban planners seeking to create a supportive environment that promotes outdoor jogging.
In search of peak human athletic potential: A mathematical investigation

Abstract:This paper applies existing and new approaches to study trends in the performance of elite athletes over time. We study both track and field scores of men and women athletes on a yearly basis from 2001 to 2019, revealing several trends and findings. First, we perform a detailed regression study to reveal the existence of an "Olympic effect", where average performance improves during Olympic years. Next, we study the rate of change in athlete performance and fail to reject the notion that athlete scores are leveling off, at least among the top 100 annual scores. Third, we examine the relationship in performance trends among men and women's categories of the same event, revealing striking similarity, together with some anomalous events. Finally, we analyze the geographic composition of the world's top athletes, attempting to understand how the diversity by country and continent varies over time across events. We challenge a widely held conception of athletics, that certain events are more geographically dominated than others. Our methods and findings could be applied more generally to identify evolutionary dynamics in group performance and highlight spatio-temporal trends in group composition.

Abstract:Physical education class helps students develop whole-body and fine motor skills and improve their strength, balance, and cardiovascular health. Sports also provide students with numerous social, psychological, and emotional benefits, which in turn improve their learning status and academic achievements. Nowadays, sports achievements are becoming more and more important, and many schools pay more and more attention to the development of sports. In order to improve sports achievements and predict sports achievements, we can combine them with relevant deep learning models to analyze sports achievements from multiple angles and factors, so as to improve sports achievements and predict sports achievements according to relevant influencing factors. Combined with the experimental part in this paper, the gradient compression algorithms under the deep learning model are compared. According to the data, the compression ratio of the AdaComp algorithm model is 1%, the training time is 5839 s, the average accuracy rate is about 90.9%, and the average loss value is 0.324. The compression ratio of the ProbComm-LPAC algorithm model is 1%, the training time is 5505 s, the average accuracy rate is about 91.8%, and the average loss value is 0.271. The compression ratio of the LAQ algorithm model is approximately 1%, the training time is 5467 s, the average accuracy rate is about 90.8%, and the average loss value is 0.554. When the number of training rounds increases from 20 to 5000, the accuracy of the three algorithm models is on the rise, but the accuracy of ProbComp-LPAC model is higher among the three models. When the number of training rounds increases, the data set loss rate of the three models is declining, indicating that the more the training times, the higher the correct rate, the smaller the loss value, and the higher the efficiency. Through four dimensions related to the influence of sports achievements-interest in seeking knowledge, ability pursuit, altruistic orientation, and reputation acquisition, this paper studies the influencing factors of sports achievements. According to the research data, most people think that the interest in seeking knowledge accounts for a large proportion of the factors affecting sports performance, with an average of 38.6709, accounting for 32% in the four dimensions. Through the study of students' gender and origin, this paper explores the analysis of the four dimensions of sports performance. It is believed that interest in knowledge is the most important factor. The average values of the four dimensions are 48.98, 52.37, 48.12, and 51.34, respectively. In order to accurately predict sports achievements, the characteristics of sports achievements prediction are sorted, among which the maximum number of action exercises is 0.24, the average score of sports action tests is 0.16, the video viewing time is 0.13, the sign-in rate is 0.09, and the minimum homework completion rate is 0.03. Predicting sports achievements through these characteristics can improve the accuracy of prediction. When the number of features in sports performance prediction gradually increases, the accuracy of sports performance prediction is also increasing. When the number of features is 8 and 9, the prediction accuracy is about 0.64.

Abstract:The limiting factors of top athletic performance and the psycho-physiological mechanisms involved remain controversial. The aim of this study was to attempt a prediction of world records (WR) for the next ten years in five athletic track and field and events. Our prediction has been produced by means of computer--aided mathematical models. In short, polynomials that could best approximate the WR of the last decades have been calculated and projected over the period 2000-2010. The predicted values for the year 2010 point to an improvement rate of the WR considered varying between 0.2% and 10.3%, depending on event and gender. Those values could be influenced by the use of better sports equipment, better nutrition and training and especially by the impact of doping and of anti-doping measures.

Abstract:The heightened focus on competition has captured people's attention, elevating the significance of athletic endeavors. This study aimed to explore the effects of changes in sports competition. Through data preprocessing and principal component analysis, 13 factors influencing posture were confirmed and dynamic expressions were derived to measure athlete performance using entropy weighting. We further investigated the effect of competition fluctuations on the performance of future athletes, revealing the close relationship between situation size and subsequent scoring. Specifically, we used two methods, Markov Chain and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), to predict match swings. Overall, this study deeply dissected the dynamic changes in athlete performance, reveals the interaction between posture and athlete outcomes, and provides practical suggestions for optimizing athlete status and competition strategies.

Abstract:According to the traditional data mining method, it is no longer applicable to obtain knowledge from the database, and the knowledge mined in the past must be constantly updated. In the last few years, Internet technology and cloud computing technology have emerged. The emergence of these two technologies has brought about Earth-shaking changes in certain industries. In order to efficiently retrieve and count a large amount of data at a lower cost, big data technology is proposed. Big data technology has played an important role for data with various types, huge quantities, and extremely fast changing speeds. However, big data technology still has some limitations, and researchers still cannot obtain the value of data in a short period of time with low cost and high efficiency. The sports database constructed in this paper can effectively carry out statistics and analysis on the data of sports learning. In the prototype system, log files can be mined, classified, and preprocessed. For the incremental data obtained by preprocessing, incremental data mining can be performed, a classification model can be established, and the database can be updated to provide users with personalized services. Through the method of data survey, the author studied the students' exercise status, and the feedback data show that college students lack the awareness of physical exercise and have no fitness habit. It is necessary to accelerate the reform of college sports and cultivate students' good sports awareness.

Abstract:Predictive sports data analytics can be revolutionary for sports performance. Existing literature discusses players' or teams' performance, independently or in tandem. Using Machine Learning (ML), this paper aims to holistically evaluate player-, team-, and conference (season)-level performances in Division-1 Women's basketball. The players were monitored and tested through a full competitive year. The performance was quantified at the player level using the reactive strength index modified (RSImod), at the team level by the game score (GS) metric, and finally at the conference level through Player Efficiency Rating (PER). The data includes parameters from training, subjective stress, sleep, and recovery (WHOOP straps), in-game statistics (Polar monitors), and countermovement jumps. We used data balancing techniques and an Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) classifier to predict RSI and GS with greater than 90% accuracy and a 0.9 F1 score. The XGB regressor predicted PER with an MSE of 0.026 and an R 2 of 0.680. Ensemble of Random Forest, XGB, and correlation finds feature importance at all levels. We used Partial Dependence Plots to understand the impact of each feature on the target variable. Quantifying and predicting performance at all levels will allow coaches to monitor athlete readiness and help improve training.

Abstract:Athletic performance follows a typical pattern of improvement and decline during a career. This pattern is also often observed within-seasons as athlete aims for their performance to peak at key events such as the Olympic Games or World Championships. A Bayesian hierarchical model is developed to analyse the evolution of athletic sporting performance throughout an athlete's career and separate these effects whilst allowing for confounding factors such as environmental conditions. Our model works in continuous time and estimates both the average performance level of the population, $g(t)$, at age $t$ and how each $i$-th athlete differs from the average $f_i(t)$. We further decompose $f_i(t)$ into changes from season-to-season, termed the between-season performance trajectory, and within-season performance trajectories which are modelled by a constrained Bernstein polynomial. Hence, the specific focus of this project is to identify the differences in performance that exist both between and within-seasons for each athlete. For the implementation of the model an adaptive Metropolis-within-Gibbs algorithm is used. An illustration of algorithm's performance on 100 metres and 200 metres freestyle swimming in both female and male athletes is presented.

Abstract:Wearable sensors have become increasingly popular for assessing athletic performance, but the optimal methods for processing and analyzing the data remain unclear. This study investigates the efficacy of discrete and continuous feature-extraction methods, separately and in combination, for modeling countermovement jump performance using wearable sensor data. We demonstrate that continuous features, particularly those derived from Functional Principal Component Analysis, outperform discrete features in terms of model performance, robustness to variations in data distribution and volume, and consistency across different datasets. Our findings underscore the importance of methodological choices, such as signal type, alignment methods, and model selection, in developing accurate and generalizable predictive models. We also highlight the potential pitfalls of relying solely on domain knowledge for feature selection and the benefits of data-driven approaches. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our findings for the broader field of sports biomechanics and provide practical recommendations for researchers and practitioners aiming to leverage wearable sensor data for athletic performance assessment. Our results contribute to the development of more reliable and widely applicable predictive models, facilitating the use of wearable technology for optimizing training and enhancing athletic outcomes across various sports disciplines.

Comparing and Forecasting Performances in Different Events of Athletics Using a Probabilistic Model

Abstract:Though athletics statistics are abundant, it is a difficult task to quantitatively compare performances from different events of track, field, and road running in a meaningful way. There are several commonly-used methods, but each has its limitations. Some methods, for example, are valid only for running events, or are unable to compare men's performances to women's, while others are based largely on world records and are thus unsuitable for comparing world records to one other. The most versatile and widely-used statistic is a set of scoring tables compiled by the IAAF, which are updated and published every few years. Unfortunately, these methods are not fully disclosed. In this paper, we propose a straight-forward, objective, model-based algorithm for assigning scores to athletic performances for the express purpose of comparing marks between different events. Specifically, the main score we propose is based on the expected number of athletes who perform better than a given mark within a calendar year. Computing this naturally interpretable statistic requires only a list of the top performances in each event and is not overly dependent on a small number of marks, such as the world records. We found that this statistic could predict the quality of future performances better than the IAAF scoring tables, and is thus better suited for comparing performances from different events. In addition, the probabilistic model used to generate the performance scores allows for multiple interpretations which can be adapted for various purposes, such as calculating the expected top mark in a given event or calculating the probability of a world record being broken within a certain time period. Abstract:Purpose: To analyze the evolution of the world ranking in swimming over the last 10 years, with particular attention to the effects of COVID-19 on the different levels of participating athletes. Methods: The top 200 world-ranked entries in all swimming events (50-m pool) were collected from 2013 to 2022. A mathematical model (Gaussian model) was proposed to evaluate the ranking progression for different performance levels (clusters) according to distance, stroke, and gender. The model was applied both with and without the COVID season data. Results: Overall results indicated a general progression in world rankings over the last 10 years, except for the COVID season and the post-Olympic year(s), with peak results in the 2021 postpandemic (Olympic) year. The gender gap in World Aquatics points scoring has shown an increasing gap in favor of males since 2017, reaching 1.5% in 2022. The top 200 positions of world rankings were grouped into 3 different clusters defined by the 23.3%, 66.5%, and 100% of ranked male swimmers (or 31.5%, 72.5%, and 100% for females) and with average World Aquatics scores of 910 (12), 858 (10) and 816 (11) points (907 [13], 847 [11], and 802 [12] for females). The Gaussian model showed a gap averaging ∼21 to ∼36 points between performance curves with or without COVID season data, with larger gaps for female rankings and cluster-3 swimmers. Conclusions: These results suggest that, given the lower relative performance of female swimmers in the different clusters of world rankings, female events may provide an opportunity to enter international-level swimming.

Abstract:With the development of social economy, sports industry has shown its economic advantages. Sports industry has shown great potential in improving national economy, guiding social consumption, and adjusting industrial structure. However, compared with the rapid development of sports industry, the research on the growth law of sports culture industry is relatively backward, which largely restricts the further development of China's sports industry. For this problem, this paper analyzes the feasibility of sports culture industry growth prediction based on big data theory from the perspective of data mining, proposes a sports culture industry growth prediction model based on genetic neural network, and realizes the prediction of sports culture industry growth law under the background of big data. The simulation result shows that the optimized neural network can effectively improve the efficiency and accuracy of prediction and show strong robust in predicting the laws of sports culture industry.

Abstract:<p>The International Swimming Federation (FINA) uses a very simple points system with the aim to rank swimmers across all swimming events. The points acquired is a function of the ratio of the recorded time and the current world record for that event. With some world records considered 'better' than others however, bias is introduced between events, with some being much harder to attain points where the world record is hard to beat. A model based on extreme value theory is introduced, where swim times are modelled through their rate of occurrence, and with the distribution of the best times following a generalised Pareto distribution. Within this framework, the strength of a particular swim is judged based on its position compared to the whole distribution of swim times, rather than just the world record. This model also accounts for the date of the swim, as training methods improve over the years, as well as changes in technology, such as full body suits. The parameters of the generalised Pareto distribution, for each of the 34 individual long course events, will be shown to vary with covariates, leading to a novel single unified description of swim quality over all events and time. This structure, which allows information to be shared across all strokes, distances, and genders, improves the predictive power as well as the model robustness compared to equivalent independent models. A by‐product of the model is that it is possible to estimate other features of interest, such as the ultimate possible time, the distribution of new world records for any event, and to correct swim times for the effect of full body suits. Predicting future stars: Probability and performance corridors for elite swimmers

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the new age groups of the World Junior Championships in swimming from a scientific perspective, establish benchmarks and performance corridors that predict success at peak performance age and compare performance corridors between men and women and short-, middle-, and long-distance freestyle races. Design: Longitudinal big data analysis. Methods: In total, 347,186 annual best times of male (n = 3360, 561 ± 177 Swimming Points) and female freestyle swimmers (n = 2570, 553 ± 183 Swimming Points) were collected across all race distances at peak performance age and retrospectively analyzed throughout adolescence. Cumulative Poisson distribution was used to calculate probabilities of becoming world-class finalist, international-class, or national-class swimmer for each age group. Performance corridors were expressed relative to the World Record and compared between performance levels, sex, race distances, and age groups with a 2-way analysis of variance. Results: Females are required to swim faster relative to the World Record at a younger age and show earlier performance plateaus than males at national and international levels. Additionally, world-class long-distance finalists show higher Swimming Points earlier in their career compared to short-distance swimmers. This effect is more distinctive in females than males. Conclusions: Based on the sex-specific performance corridors and developments, the newly aligned age groups for the World Junior Championships are questionable regarding long-term athlete development. Based on race times from 131 nations, the present benchmarks provide valid international normative values to predict success chances at peak performance age and guide young swimmers along their talent pathway.

Abstract:Introduction: This study presented a novel approach to predict future front crawl swimming world records (WRs) by employing a methodology that integrated performance data from both running and front crawl swimming. Methods: By extracting the top one running and swimming performances from 1995 to 2023 and applying a model that correlates physiological characteristics such as maximum aerobic power, anaerobic capacity, the decrement in maximum power with prolonged effort, and performance speed and duration, it was possible to project the potential record-breaking performances in 2024 across various swimming distances for both male and female athletes. Furthermore, this approach was expected to be less susceptible to the influence of the full-body swimsuit era, which may have disrupted the typical trajectory of swimming performance progression. Results: The average relative error between the top one and estimated speeds in front crawl swimming (50–1,500 m, from 1995 to 2023, and for male and female) was 0.56% ± 0.17%. For male, WR in longer distances have been predicted with new WR in the 400 and 800 m. A more ambitious prediction was noted among female, with twice as many WR as among male illustrated by new WR in the 50, 200, 400 and 800 m. Discussion: This study illustrated that the utilization of a prediction model based on physiological parameters yielded plausible time estimates. Additionally, the research accentuated the ongoing trajectory of surpassing existing WR into 2024, illustrating the competitive zeal fueled by an emerging framework of exceptional swimmers.
