Abstract:ABSTRACT Brain tumors pose a significant threat to human health, necessitating early detection and accurate diagnosis to enhance treatment outcomes. However, centralized data collection and processing encounter challenges related to privacy breaches and data integration due to the sensitivity and diversity of brain tumor patient data. In response, this paper proposes an innovative federated learning‐based approach for brain tumor detection, facilitating multicenter data sharing while safeguarding individual data privacy. Our proposed federated learning architecture features each medical center as a participant, with each retaining local data and engaging in secure communication with a central server. Within this federated migration learning framework, each medical center independently trains a base model on its local data and transmits a fraction of the model's parameters to the central server. The central server leverages these parameters for model aggregation and knowledge sharing, facilitating the exchange and migration of models among participating medical centers. This collaborative approach empowers individual medical centers to share knowledge and experiences, thereby enhancing the performance and accuracy of the brain tumor detection model. To validate our federated learning model, we conduct comprehensive evaluations using an independent test dataset, comparing its performance with traditional centralized learning approaches. The experimental results underscore the superiority of the federated learning‐based brain tumor detection approach, achieving heightened detection performance compared with traditional methods while meticulously preserving data privacy. In conclusion, our study presents an innovative solution for effective data collaboration and privacy protection in the realm of brain tumor detection, holding promising clinical applications. The federated learning approach not only advances detection accuracy but also establishes a secure and privacy‐preserving foundation for collaborative research in medical imaging.

Abstract:Brain tumor classification using MRI images is a crucial yet challenging task in medical imaging. Accurate diagnosis is vital for effective treatment planning but is often hindered by the complex nature of tumor morphology and variations in imaging. Traditional methodologies primarily rely on manual interpretation of MRI images, supplemented by conventional machine learning techniques. These approaches often lack the robustness and scalability needed for precise and automated tumor classification. The major limitations include a high degree of manual intervention, potential for human error, limited ability to handle large datasets, and lack of generalizability to diverse tumor types and imaging conditions.To address these challenges, we propose a federated learning-based deep learning model that leverages the power of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for automated and accurate brain tumor classification. This innovative approach not only emphasizes the use of a modified VGG16 architecture optimized for brain MRI images but also highlights the significance of federated learning and transfer learning in the medical imaging domain. Federated learning enables decentralized model training across multiple clients without compromising data privacy, addressing the critical need for confidentiality in medical data handling. This model architecture benefits from the transfer learning technique by utilizing a pre-trained CNN, which significantly enhances its ability to classify brain tumors accurately by leveraging knowledge gained from vast and diverse datasets.Our model is trained on a diverse dataset combining figshare, SARTAJ, and Br35H datasets, employing a federated learning approach for decentralized, privacy-preserving model training. The adoption of transfer learning further bolsters the model's performance, making it adept at handling the intricate variations in MRI images associated with different types of brain tumors. The model demonstrates high precision (0.99 for glioma, 0.95 for meningioma, 1.00 for no tumor, and 0.98 for pituitary), recall, and F1-scores in classification, outperforming existing methods. The overall accuracy stands at 98%, showcasing the model's efficacy in classifying various tumor types accurately, thus highlighting the transformative potential of federated learning and transfer learning in enhancing brain tumor classification using MRI images.

Abstract:Glioma, a primary tumor derived from brain glial cells, is around 45% of all intracranial tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging's (MRI's) precise glioma segmentation is crucial for clinical purposes. This article presents a novel automatic brain tumor segmentation approach based on a multi‐encoder‐based federated intelligent deep learning framework. The suggested method uses a U‐shaped network design that multiplies the single contraction path into several paths to explore semantic information modalities deeply. The basic convolutional layer uses an Inception module and dilated convolutions to extract multi‐scale features from the images using artificial intelligent. To emphasize segmentation‐related information while ignoring redundant channel dimension information and improving the accuracy of network segmentation, lightweight channel attention efficient channel attention (ECA) modules are inserted into the bottleneck layer and decoder. The collection of data for the 2018 Brain Tumor Segmentation Challenge (BraTS 2018) is used to test the effectiveness of the suggested structure, and the findings indicate that the growth core, for the entire tumor and the augmented tumor regions, respectively, the average Dice coefficients are 0.880, 0.784, and 0.757. These findings support the proposed algorithm's ability to accurately and successfully segregate multimodal MRI brain tumors.

Abstract:A technique of automated segmentation has been introduced in this paper, which makes the tumour segmentation out of MRI images, apart from improving the effectiveness of segmentation as well as classification. Once the dataset of MRI dataset is collected from different public sources, the pre-processing of the image is performed by the median filtering and contrast enhancement. The segmentation of brain tumour is the main contribution of this paper, which concentrates on developing the Adaptive Influence Factor-based Elephant Herding Optimisation (AIF-EHO)-based FCM-UNet fusion segmentation with multi-objective function. Then, the feature extraction is performed using Completed Local Binary Pattern (CLBP) and Local Gradient Pattern (LGP). These extracted features are further used in deep learning using Enhanced Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for brain tumour classification. Results demonstrated on public benchmarks described that this method attains competitive accuracy than the conventional techniques while being computationally effective.

Abstract:Conventional medical imaging and machine learning techniques are not perfect enough to correctly segment the brain tumor in MRI as the proper identification and segmentation of tumor borders are one of the most important criteria of tumor extraction. The existing approaches are time-consuming, incursive, and susceptible to human mistake. These drawbacks highlight the importance of developing a completely automated deep learning-based approach for segmentation and classification of brain tumors. The expedient and prompt segmentation and classification of a brain tumor are critical for accurate clinical diagnosis and adequately treatment. As a result, deep learning-based brain tumor segmentation and classification algorithms are extensively employed. In the deep learning-based brain tumor segmentation and classification technique, the CNN model has an excellent brain segmentation and classification effect. In this work, an integrated and hybrid approach based on deep convolutional neural network and machine learning classifiers is proposed for the accurate segmentation and classification of brain MRI tumor. A CNN is proposed in the first stage to learn the feature map from image space of brain MRI into the tumor marker region. In the second step, a faster region-based CNN is developed for the localization of tumor region followed by region proposal network (RPN). In the last step, a deep convolutional neural network and machine learning classifiers are incorporated in series in order to further refine the segmentation and classification process to obtain more accurate results and findings. The proposed model's performance is assessed based on evaluation metrics extensively used in medical image processing. The experimental results validate that the proposed deep CNN and SVM-RBF classifier achieved an accuracy of 98.3% and a dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 97.8% on the task of classifying brain tumors as gliomas, meningioma, or pituitary using brain dataset-1, while on Figshare dataset, it achieved an accuracy of 98.0% and a DSC of 97.1% on classifying brain tumors as gliomas, meningioma, or pituitary. The segmentation and classification results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art techniques by a significant margin.

Advanced U-Net Model for Precise Brain Tumor Segmentation in MRI Images

Abstract:The accuracy of medical image segmentation is crucial for diagnosis and treatment planning in the modern healthcare system. Deep learning methods, like CNNs, UNETs, and Transformers, have completely changed this industry by automating labor-intensive manual segmentation procedures that were previously done by hand. However, problems like complex architectures and blurry characteristics continue, which causes issues with accuracy. Researchers are working hard to overcome these obstacles to fully realize the potential of medical image segmentation in the revolution of healthcare. Our paper presents an enhanced U-Net model specifically designed for brain tumour MRI image segmentation to improve precision. There are three primary components to our strategy. First, we prioritize feature augmentation using methods like CLAHE in the picture preprocessing phase. Second, we modify the U-Net model's architecture with an emphasis on a customized layered design in order to improve segmentation outcomes. Finally, we use a CNN model for post-processing to further optimize segmentation results using further convolutional layers. A total of 3,064 brain MRI pictures were used to test (612 images), validate (612 images), and train (1,840 images) our model. We obtained exceptional recall (93.66%), accuracy (97.79%), F-score (93.15%), and precision (92.66%). The Dice coefficient's training and validation curves showed little variation, with training reaching roughly 93% and validation 84%, suggesting good generalization ability. High accuracy was validated by visual review of the segmentation findings, albeit occasionally little mistakes like false positives were noticed.
Brain Tumor Segmentation from MRI Images using Deep Learning Techniques

Abstract:A brain tumor, whether benign or malignant, can potentially be life threatening and requires painstaking efforts in order to identify the type, origin and location, let alone cure one. Manual segmentation by medical specialists can be time-consuming, which calls out for the involvement of technology to hasten the process with high accuracy. For the purpose of medical image segmentation, we inspected and identified the capable deep learning model, which shows consistent results in the dataset used for brain tumor segmentation. In this study, a public MRI imaging dataset contains 3064 TI-weighted images from 233 patients with three variants of brain tumor, viz. meningioma, glioma, and pituitary tumor. The dataset files were converted and preprocessed before indulging into the methodology which employs implementation and training of some well-known image segmentation deep learning models like U-Net & Attention U-Net with various backbones, Deep Residual U-Net, ResUnet++ and Recurrent Residual U-Net. with varying parameters, acquired from our review of the literature related to human brain tumor classification and segmentation. The experimental findings showed that among all the applied approaches, the recurrent residual U-Net which uses Adam optimizer reaches a Mean Intersection Over Union of 0.8665 and outperforms other compared state-of-the-art deep learning models. The visual findings also show the remarkable results of the brain tumor segmentation from MRI scans and demonstrates how useful the algorithm will be for physicians to extract the brain cancers automatically from MRI scans and serve humanity.

Fed-MUnet: Multi-modal Federated Unet for Brain Tumor Segmentation

Abstract:Deep learning-based techniques have been widely utilized for brain tumor segmentation using both single and multi-modal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images. Most current studies focus on centralized training due to the intrinsic challenge of data sharing across clinics. To mitigate privacy concerns, researchers have introduced Federated Learning (FL) methods to brain tumor segmentation tasks. However, currently such methods are focusing on single modal MRI, with limited study on multi-modal MRI. The challenges include complex structure, large-scale parameters, and overfitting issues of the FL based methods using multi-modal MRI. To address the above challenges, we propose a novel multi-modal FL framework for brain tumor segmentation (Fed-MUnet) that is suitable for FL training. We evaluate our approach with the BraTS2022 datasets, which are publicly available. The experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves FL nature of distributed learning and privacy preserving. For the enhancing tumor, tumor core and whole tumor, the mean of five major metrics were 87.5%, 90.6% and 92.2%, respectively, which were higher than SOTA methods while preserving privacy. In terms of parameters count, quantity of floating-point operations (FLOPs) and inference, Fed-MUnet is Pareto optimal compared with the state-of-the-art segmentation backbone while achieves higher performance and tackles privacy issue. Abstract:The brain is the center of human control and communication. Hence, it is very important to protect it and provide ideal conditions for it to function. Brain cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the world, and the detection of malignant brain tumors is a priority in medical image segmentation. The brain tumor segmentation task aims to identify the pixels that belong to the abnormal areas when compared to normal tissue. Deep learning has shown in recent years its power to solve this problem, especially the U-Net-like architectures. In this paper, we proposed an efficient U-Net architecture with three different encoders: VGG-19, ResNet50, and MobileNetV2. This is based on transfer learning followed by a bidirectional features pyramid network applied to each encoder to obtain more spatial pertinent features. Then, we fused the feature maps extracted from the output of each network and merged them into our decoder with an attention mechanism. The method was evaluated on the BraTS 2020 dataset to segment the different types of tumors and the results show a good performance in terms of dice similarity, with coefficients of 0.8741, 0.8069, and 0.7033 for the whole tumor, core tumor, and enhancing tumor, respectively.

Abstract:Background A brain tumor is the development of abnormal brain cells, some of which may progress to cancer. Early identification of illnesses and development of treatment plans improve patients' quality of life and life expectancy. Brain tumors are most commonly detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The range of tumor sizes, shapes, and locations in the brain makes the existing approaches inadequate for accurate classification. Furthermore, using the current model takes a lot of time and yields results that are not as accurate. The primary goal of the suggested approach is to categorize whether a brain tumor is present, identify its type and divide the affected area into segments. Methods Therefore, this research introduced a novel efficient DL-based extension residual structure and adaptive channel attention mechanism (ERSACA-Net) to classify the brain tumor types as pituitary, glioma, meningioma and no tumor. Extracting features in brain tumor analysis helps in accurately characterizing tumor properties, which aids in precise diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of disease progression. For this purpose, we utilized Enhanced Res2Net to extract the essential features. Using the Binary Chaotic Transient Search Optimization (BCTSO) Algorithm, the most pertinent features in terms of shape, texture, and colour are chosen to minimize complexity. Results Finally, a novel LWIFCM_CSA approach is introduced, which is the ensemble of Local-information weighted intuitionistic Fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm (LWIFCM) and Chameleon Swarm Algorithm (CSA). Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Network (CTGAN) is used to tackle class imbalance problems. While differentiating from existing approaches, the proposed approach gains a greater solution. This stable improvement in accuracy highlights the suggested classifier's strong performance and raises the possibility of more precise and trustworthy brain tumor classification. In addition, our method's processing time, which averaged 0.11 s, was significantly faster than that of previous approaches.

Abstract:Brain tumors have become a severe medical complication in recent years due to their high fatality rate. Radiologists segment the tumor manually, which is time-consuming, error-prone, and expensive. In recent years, automated segmentation based on deep learning has demonstrated promising results in solving computer vision problems such as image classification and segmentation. Brain tumor segmentation has recently become a prevalent task in medical imaging to determine the tumor location, size, and shape using automated methods. Many researchers have worked on various machine and deep learning approaches to determine the most optimal solution using the convolutional methodology. In this review paper, we discuss the most effective segmentation techniques based on the datasets that are widely used and publicly available. We also proposed a survey of federated learning methodologies to enhance global segmentation performance and ensure privacy. A comprehensive literature review is suggested after studying more than 100 papers to generalize the most recent techniques in segmentation and multi-modality information. Finally, we concentrated on unsolved problems in brain tumor segmentation and a client-based federated model training strategy. Based on this review, future researchers will understand the optimal solution path to solve these issues.

Abstract:Introduction: The present study on the development and evaluation of an automated brain tumor segmentation technique based on deep learning using the 3D U-Net model. Objectives: The objective is to leverage state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on a large dataset of brain MRI scans for segmentation. Methods: The proposed methodology applies pre-processing techniques for enhanced performance and generalizability. Results: Extensive validation on an independent dataset confirms the model's robustness and potential for integration into clinical workflows. The study emphasizes the importance of data pre-processing and explores various hyperparameters to optimize the model's performance. The 3D U-Net, has given IoUs for training and validation dataset have been 0.8181 and 0.66 respectively. Conclusion: Ultimately, this comprehensive framework showcases the efficacy of deep learning in automating brain tumour detection, offering valuable support in clinical practice.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Brain tumor segmentation is paramount in medical diagnostics. This study presents a multistage segmentation model consisting of two main steps. First, the fusion of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities creates new and more effective tumor imaging modalities. Second, the semantic segmentation of the original and fused modalities, utilizing various modified architectures of the U‐Net model. In the first step, a residual network with multi‐scale backbone architecture (Res2Net) and guided filter are employed for pixel‐by‐pixel image fusion tasks without requiring any training or learning process. This method captures both detailed and base elements from the multimodal images to produce better and more informative fused images that significantly enhance the segmentation process. Many fusion scenarios were performed and analyzed, revealing that the best fusion results are attained when combining T2‐weighted (T2) with fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T1‐weighted contrast‐enhanced (T1CE) with FLAIR modalities. In the second step, several models, including the U‐Net and its many modifications (adding attention layers, residual connections, and depthwise separable connections), are trained using both the original and fused modalities. Further, a “Model Selection‐based” fusion of these individual models is also considered for more enhancement. In the preprocessing step, the images are resized by cropping them to decrease the pixel count and minimize background interference. Experiments utilizing the brain tumor segmentation (BraTS) 2020 dataset were performed to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed methodology. The “Model Selection‐based” fusion model achieved an average Dice score of 88.4%, an individual score of 91.1% for the whole tumor (WT) class, an average sensitivity score of 86.26%, and a specificity score of 91.7%. These results prove the robustness and high performance of the proposed methodology compared to other state‐of‐the‐art methods.

A Unified Pipeline for Simultaneous Brain Tumor Classification and Segmentation Using Fine-Tuned CNN and Residual UNet Architecture

Abstract:In this paper, I present a comprehensive pipeline integrating a Fine-Tuned Convolutional Neural Network (FT-CNN) and a Residual-UNet (RUNet) architecture for the automated analysis of MRI brain scans. The proposed system addresses the dual challenges of brain tumor classification and segmentation, which are crucial tasks in medical image analysis for precise diagnosis and treatment planning. Initially, the pipeline preprocesses the FigShare brain MRI image dataset, comprising 3064 images, by normalizing and resizing them to achieve uniformity and compatibility with the model. The FT-CNN model then classifies the preprocessed images into distinct tumor types: glioma, meningioma, and pituitary tumor. Following classification, the RUNet model performs pixel-level segmentation to delineate tumor regions within the MRI scans. The FT-CNN leverages the VGG19 architecture, pre-trained on large datasets and fine-tuned for specific tumor classification tasks. Features extracted from MRI images are used to train the FT-CNN, demonstrating robust performance in discriminating between tumor types. Subsequently, the RUNet model, inspired by the U-Net design and enhanced with residual blocks, effectively segments tumors by combining high-resolution spatial information from the encoding path with context-rich features from the bottleneck. My experimental results indicate that the integrated pipeline achieves high accuracy in both classification (96%) and segmentation tasks (98%), showcasing its potential for clinical applications in brain tumor diagnosis. For the classification task, the metrics involved are loss, accuracy, confusion matrix, and classification report, while for the segmentation task, the metrics used are loss, accuracy, Dice coefficient, intersection over union, and Jaccard distance. To further validate the generalizability and robustness of the integrated pipeline, I evaluated the model on two additional datasets. The first dataset consists of 7023 images for classification tasks, expanding to a four-class dataset. The second dataset contains approximately 3929 images for both classification and segmentation tasks, including a binary classification scenario. The model demonstrated robust performance, achieving 95% accuracy on the four-class task and high accuracy (96%) in the binary classification and segmentation tasks, with a Dice coefficient of 95%.

Abstract:The symmetrical segmentation of brain tumor images is crucial for both clinical diagnosis and computer-aided prognosis. Traditional manual methods are not only asymmetrical in terms of efficiency but also prone to errors and lengthy processing. A significant barrier to the process is the complex interplay between the deep learning network for MRI brain tumor imaging and the harmonious compound of both local and global feature information, which can throw off the balance in segmentation accuracy. Addressing this asymmetry becomes essential for precise diagnosis. In answer to this challenge, we introduce a balanced, end-to-end solution for brain tumor segmentation, incorporating modifications that mirror the U-Net architecture, ensuring a harmonious flow of information. Beginning with symmetric enhancement of the visual quality of MRI brain images, we then apply a symmetrical residual structure. By replacing the convolutional modules in both the encoder and decoder sections with deep residual modules, we establish a balance that counters the vanishing gradient problem commonly faced when the network depth increases. Following this, a symmetrical threefold attention block is integrated. This addition ensures a balanced fusion of local and global image features, fine-tuning the network to symmetrically discern and learn essential image characteristics. This harmonious integration remarkably amplifies the network's precision in segmenting MRI brain tumors. We further validate the equilibrium achieved by our proposed model using three brain tumor segmentation datasets and four metrics and by juxtaposing our model against 21 traditional and learning-based counterparts. The results confirm that our balanced approach significantly elevates performance in the segmentation of MRI brain tumor images without an asymmetrical increase in computational time.

Abstract:Abstract This study proposes an improved U‐Net model to address the issues of large semantic differences in skip connections and insufficient utilization of cross‐channel information in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images leading to inaccurate segmentation of brain tumor regions in the field of brain tumor segmentation. Firstly, by adding a deep residual module to alter the receptive field, the network's ability to learn tumor information is enhanced. Secondly, a dual attention mechanism was established using Bayesian weighting technology, achieving multi‐channel and multi‐scale feature fusion, and improving the model's learning and extraction of brain tumor boundary information. Finally, the tumor features extracted from different patterns are concatenated through skip connections, effectively integrating feature information from different levels and scales, and reducing semantic differences. We evaluated the performance of the proposed model on the BraTS2018 and BraTS2019 brain tumor image segmentation datasets. The experimental results showed that for the BraTS2018 dataset, the model improved the average dice score by 12.8%, the average sensitivity by 10.4%, and the average Hausdorff Distance by 5.75 compared to traditional U‐Net. On the BraTS2019 dataset, three indicators improved by 12.6%, 11.2%, and 7.46, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed improved U‐Net model can improve the segmentation performance of brain tumor MRI images without increasing computational time.

Abstract:Background and objective: Accurate segmentation of brain tumors from multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) holds significant importance in clinical diagnosis and surgical intervention, while current deep learning methods cope with situations of multimodal MRI by an early fusion strategy that implicitly assumes that the modal relationships are linear, which tends to ignore the complementary information between modalities, negatively impacting the model's performance. Meanwhile, long-range relationships between voxels cannot be captured due to the localized character of the convolution procedure. Method: Aiming at this problem, we propose a multimodal segmentation network based on a late fusion strategy that employs multiple encoders and a decoder for the segmentation of brain tumors. Each encoder is specialized for processing distinct modalities. Notably, our framework includes a feature fusion module based on a 3D discrete wavelet transform aimed at extracting complementary features among the encoders. Additionally, a 3D global context-aware module was introduced to capture the long-range dependencies of tumor voxels at a high level of features. The decoder combines fused and global features to enhance the network's segmentation performance. Result: Our proposed model is experimented on the publicly available BraTS2018 and BraTS2021 datasets. The experimental results show competitiveness with state-of-the-art methods. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that our approach applies a novel concept for multimodal fusion within deep neural networks and delivers more accurate and promising brain tumor segmentation, with the potential to assist physicians in diagnosis.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Brain Tumor Fusion-based Segments and Classification-Non-enhancing tumor (BTFSC-Net) is a hybrid system for classifying brain tumors that combine medical image fusion, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification procedures. Materials and Methods: to reduce noise from medical images, the hybrid probabilistic wiener filter (HPWF) is first applied as a preprocessing step. Then, to combine robust edge analysis (REA) properties in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) medical images, a fusion network based on deep learning convolutional neural networks (DLCNN) is developed. Here, the brain images’ slopes and borders are detected using REA. To separate the sick region from the color image, adaptive fuzzy c-means integrated k-means (HFCMIK) clustering is then implemented. To extract hybrid features from the fused image, low-level features based on the redundant discrete wavelet transform (RDWT), empirical color features, and texture characteristics based on the gray-level cooccurrence matrix (GLCM) are also used. Finally, to distinguish between benign and malignant tumors, a deep learning probabilistic neural network (DLPNN) is deployed. Results: according to the findings, the suggested BTFSC-Net model performed better than more traditional preprocessing, fusion, segmentation, and classification techniques. Additionally, 99.21% segmentation accuracy and 99.46% classification accuracy were reached using the proposed BTFSC-Net model. Conclusions: earlier approaches have not performed as well as our presented method for image fusion, segmentation, feature extraction, classification operations, and brain tumor classification. These results illustrate that the designed approach performed more effectively in terms of enhanced quantitative evaluation with better accuracy as well as visual performance.

Abstract:Accurate segmentation of different sub-regions of gliomas such as peritumoral edema, necrotic core, enhancing, and non-enhancing tumor core from multimodal MRI scans has important clinical relevance in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of brain tumors. However, due to the highly heterogeneous appearance and shape of these tumors, segmentation of the sub-regions is challenging. Recent developments using deep learning models has proved its effectiveness in various semantic and medical image segmentation tasks, many of which are based on the U-Net network structure with symmetric encoding and decoding paths for end-to-end segmentation due to its high efficiency and good performance. In brain tumor segmentation, the 3D nature of multimodal MRI poses challenges such as memory and computation limitations and class imbalance when directly adopting the U-Net structure. In this study we aim to develop a deep learning model using a 3D U-Net with adaptations in the training and testing strategies, network structures, and model parameters for brain tumor segmentation. Furthermore, instead of picking one best model, an ensemble of multiple models trained with different hyper-parameters are used to reduce random errors from each model and yield improved performance. Preliminary results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method and achieved the 9th place in the very competitive 2018 Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge. In addition, to emphasize the clinical value of the developed segmentation method, a linear model based on the radiomics features extracted from segmentation and other clinical features are developed to predict patient overall survival. Evaluation of these innovations shows high prediction accuracy in both low-grade glioma and glioblastoma patients, which achieved the 1st place in the 2018 BraTS challenge.
