Abstract:We herein report the synthesis of 3-methyl-1,3-butanediol from isobutene and HCHO in water via a Prins condensation-hydrolysis reaction over CeO2, which is a water-tolerant Lewis acid catalyst. The CeO2 exhibits significant catalytic activity for the reaction, giving 95% HCHO conversion and 84% 3-methyl-1,3-butanediol selectivity at 150 °C for 4 h. The crystal planes of CeO2 have a significant effect on the catalytic activity for the Prins reaction. The (110) plane shows the highest catalytic activity among the crystal planes investigated (the (100), (110), and (111) planes), due to its higher concentration of Lewis acid sites, which is in line with the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Detailed characterizations, including NH3-TPD, pyridine-adsorbed FT-IR spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, revealed that the concentration of Lewis acid sites is proportional to the concentration of oxygen vacancies. This study indicates that the Lewis acidity induced by oxygen vacancy can be modulated by selective synthesis of CeO2 with different morphologies, and that the Lewis acidity and oxygen vacancy play an important role in Prins condensation and hydrolysis reaction.

Abstract:Trimerization of 2-methylpropanal (isobutyraldehyde) is a simple and effective method to synthesize 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol-3-monoisobutyrate which are often used as film forming auxiliaries in paints. The use of solid sodium hydroxide as a catalyst provides an excellent yield of above 85 % after the optimization of the reaction time and the catalyst dosage. Furthermore, trimerization of four other aldehydes with one α -hydrogen catalyzed by solid sodium hydroxide can also take place and the yield of 1,3-diol monoesters reaches 50–70 %. Trimerization of aldehydes with one α -hydrogen can be explained by a three-step reaction mechanism: (i) aldol condensation of aldehyde; (ii) crossed Cannizzaro reaction; and (iii) esterification of carboxylic acid and alcohol.

Abstract:Prins reaction, used to prepare dioxanes, has been limited by complex catalyst separation and reusability. In this article, six water-stable Brønsted acidic task-specific ionic liquids ([HMIM]BF4,[(CH2)4SO3HMIM][HSO4], [(Ac)2BIM]Br, [NMP][HSO4], [BMIM][HSO4] and [BMIM][H2PO4] were synthesized and used as environmentally benign catalysts for Prins reaction under mild reaction conditions for the first time. The process is highly effective and environmentally benign. Furthermore, [BMIM][HSO4] was conveniently separated with the products and easily recycled to catalyze Prins reaction again with excellent yields.

Abstract:The selectivity to 2,5-dimethyl-hexadiene isomers (2,5-DMH) via acid-catalyzed isobutanal-isobutene Prins condensation is limited by isobutene oligomerization reactions (to 2,4,4-trimethyl-pentene isomers) and by skeletal isomerization and cyclization of the primary 2,5-DMH products of Prins condensation. Experiment and theory are used here to assess and interpret acid strength effects on the reactivity and selectivity for isobutanal isobutene Prins condensation routes to 2,5-DMH, useful as precursors to p-xylene. Non-coordinating 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine titrants fully suppress reactivity on Keggin heteropolyacids, niobic acid, and mesoporous and microporous aluminosilicates, indicating that Prins condensation, parallel isobutene oligomerization, and secondary skeletal isomerization and cyclization of primary 2,5-DMH products occur exclusively on Bronsted acid sites. The number of titrants required to suppress rates allows site counts for active protons, a requirement for comparing reactivity among solid acids as turnover rates, as well as for the rigorous benchmarking of mechanistic proposals by theory and experiment. Kinetic and theoretical treatments show that both reactions involve kinetically relevant C-C bond formation elementary steps mediated by cationic C-C coupling transition states. Transition state charges increase with increasing acid strength for Prins condensation, becoming full carbenium-ions only on the stronger acids. Oligomerization transition state structures, in contrast, remain full ion-pairs, irrespective of acid strength. Turnover rates for both reactions increase with acid strength, but oligomerization transition states preferentially benefit from the greater stability of the conjugate anions in the stronger acids, leading to higher 2,5-DMH selectivities on weaker acids (niobic acid, aluminosilicates). These trends and findings are consistent with theoretical estimates of activation free energies for Prins condensation and oligomerization elementary steps on aluminosilicate slab and Keggin heteropolyacid cluster models. High 2,5-DMH selectivities require weak acids, which do not form a full ion-pair at transition states and thus benefit from significant stabilization by residual covalency. These trends demonstrate the previously unrecognized consequences of incomplete proton transfer at oxygen containing transition states in dampening the effects of acid strength, which contrast the full ion-pair transition states and stronger acid strength effects in hydrocarbon rearrangements on solids acids of catalytic relevance. These mechanistic conclusions and the specific example used to illustrate them led us to conclude that reaction routes involving O-containing molecules become prevalent over hydrocarbon rearrangements on weak acids when parallel routes are accessible in mixtures of oxygenate and hydrocarbon reactants.

Abstract:The synthesis of 1-methoxy-2-propanol from propylene oxide and methanol was investigated with a series of ZnMgAl catalysts derived from hydrotalcite-like compounds. The mixed oxides were characterized using XRD, TG-DTG, N-2 adsorption analysis. NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD methods were used to measure the acid-base properties of the catalysts. Under the optimal reaction condition (the amount of the catalysts, 1.8%; methanol/propylene oxide molar ratio, 5: 1; temperature, 393 K; and time, 3 h), ZnMgAl-2 led to the highest propylene oxide conversion of 95.9% and 1-methoxy-2-propanol selectivity of 90.9%. The high catalytic activity and selectivity of ZnMgAl-2 were attributed to the presence of a high density of acidic sites and a medium basic sites. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Prins reaction of isoprenol with butanal provides important intermediate 4-methyl-2-propyltetrahydro-2 H -pyran-4-ol, which can be esterified to 4-methyl-2-propyltetrahydro-2 H -pyran-4-yl acetate. This desired fragrance with fruity and rose scent is known, e.g., as Clarycet®. Molybdenum-modified MCM-41 materials were obtained by a wet impregnation method using a water solution of ammonium molybdate. We prepared several materials with different MoO 3 loadings. These materials were thoroughly characterized (nitrogen physisorption, acidity—temperature-programmed desorption, elemental composition, etc.). The activity of prepared materials was tested in Prins reaction of isoprenol with butanal in batch arrangement. The influence of various reaction conditions (catalyst type, solvent, and water addition) was tested. We showed that modification of MCM-41 with MoO 3 led to a significant increase of catalytic activity (butanal conversion at 4 h of reaction: 7% for nonmodified MCM-41 compared to 93% for material 5 wt% of MoO 3 -MCM-41). Water addition to the reaction mixture positively influenced the selectivity of the desired substituted tetrahydropyranol (selectivity > 70%). Mo-modified materials were also active in the esterification of 4-methyl-2-propyltetrahydro-2 H -pyran-4-ol with acetanhydride to 4-methyl-2-propyltetrahydro-2 H -pyran-4-yl acetate providing desired product after 5 h with 100% selectivity and total conversion. Reaction in the "one-pot" arrangement was also performed.

Tunable Synthesis of Propylene Glycol Ether from Methanol and Propylene Oxide under Ambient Pressure

Abstract:A series of basic and acidic ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide (BMIMOH), 1-acetyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AcMIMCl) and AcMIMCl-FeCl3, or analogues of AcMIMCl, namely 1-potassium acetate-3-methylimidazolium chloride (KAcMIMCl), 1-potassium (sodium, ammonium) acetate-3-methylimidazolium hydroxides (KAcMIMOH, NaAcMIMOH and NH4AcMIMOH), were prepared and used as catalysts for catalytic synthesis of propylene glycol ether via reaction of propylene oxide (PO) with methanol under mild reaction conditions. KAcMIMOH exhibited outstanding catalytic performance with 94.2% of conversion of PO and 99.1% of selectivity to 1-methoxy-2-propanol (MP-2) at 60°C and ambient pressure for 4 h. However, AcMIMCl-FeCl3 showed a good catalysis performance with high selectivity to 2-methoxy-1-propanol (MP-1). The tunable synthesis of MP-2 or MP-1 catalyzed by basic compound KAcMIMOH or acidic ionic liquid AcMIMCl-FeCl3 was realized.

Catalytic Diversity Conferred by Confinement of Protons Within Porous Aluminosilicates in Prins Condensation Reactions

Abstract:The effects of confinement of transition states and bound intermediates are described here based on kinetic and theoretical studies for Prins condensation and oligomerization reactions of isobutanal-isobutene reactant mixtures catalyzed by Bronsted acid sites of similar strength but confined within diverse microporous (TON, BEA, MFI, FAU) and mesoporous (AI-MCM-41) aluminosilicate structures. Kinetic data and density functional theory (DFT) show that smaller voids lead to more stable bound monomers derived from isobutene and isobutanal and to protons nearly saturated with H-bonded isobutanal. Prins condensation forms 2,5-dimethyl-hexadiene regioisomers (2,5-DMH) with rate constants that reflect the different stability of the kinetically-relevant C-C bond formation transition states and their H-bonded isobutanal precursors. Their differences in size lead to reactivities that depend sensitively on the size and shape of the confining voids in each aluminosilicate and even on the location of the Al-atoms (and the protons) within a given framework. Specifically, FAU leads to the highest turnover rates, because larger voids in Al-MCM-41 form less effective van der Waals contacts with the transition state, while the smaller voids within TON and BEA lead to enthalpic and entropic penalties brought forth by host-guest distortions. MFI cage-like intersections provide more effective stabilization than BEA cylindrical channels of similar size and lead to higher turnover rates and smaller DFT-derived activation free energies; these subtle effects of void shape on reactivity are neglected in descriptions of the confining frameworks based on spherical constructs. Reactivity descriptors require instead theoretical treatments that rigorously account for van der Waals interactions and for the entropy losses and host-guest distortions required for confinement, as reported here from confinement free energies ensemble-averaged over all crystallographic locations in each aluminosilicate structure. The ratios of rate constants for these parallel isobutene dimerization and Prins condensation reactions depend only weakly on the nature of the aluminosilicate framework, because of the similar size and shape of their respective transition states and bound precursors. Transition states for secondary skeletal isomerization and cyclization of 2,5-DMH condensation products, however, are stabilized more effectively (relative to condensation transition states) within voids of intermediate size (BEA, MFI), leading to higher selectivity to secondary products. MFI cage-like structures specifically catalyze the conversion of 2,5-DMH to cyclic 1,4-dimethyl-cyclohexene isomers, direct precursors to p-xylene, with unique specificity. Abstract:Al2O3/MgO materials with various Mg/Al molar ratios were prepared and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and BET analysis. These materials were used as catalysts for synthesis of 1-phenoxy-2-propanol (1-PhP) from phenol and propylene oxide as compared with some oxides, i.e. MgO, CaO, ZnO and Al2O3, etc. Al2O3/MgO with Al/Mg molar ratio of 1.5% exhibited outstanding catalytic performance with 98.2% conversion and 99.3% selectivity to 1-PhP at 120°C for 5h. This catalyst can be easily recovered and reused due to its heterogeneous catalytic nature.

Abstract:The mechanism of partial oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde over a silver surface and the promoting halogen to the catalyst have been systematically analyzed by the BOC-MP model. The analysis showed that the oxidehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde is preferable to the direct dehydrogenation pathway. The promoting effect of halogen to the catalyst has also been interpreted. The modifying atom could not only control the concentration of surface atomic oxygen (not too high), but also promotes the replenishing of surface atomic oxygen and maintains its concentration, to some extent, during the processing of the reaction. Thus, it could increase both the catalytic activity and the selectivity to the formation of formaldehyde.
Synthesis of iso-C4 hydrocarbons from CO hydrogenation over Pr6O11 and Pr-Zr-O composite oxide catalysts

Abstract:CO hydrogenation to iso-C4 hydrocarbons (isosynthesis) is a promising process to meet the demand of isobutene in a non-petroleum route. ZrO2 has been considered to be an active catalyst for the isosynthesis, but to obtain high iso-C4 selectivity at high CO conversion is still difficult over pure ZrO2 catalyst. The modification of ZrO2 has been considered for improving its catalytic performance in the isosynthesis. Pr6O11 and Pr-Zr-O composite oxide catalysts have been prepared and their catalytic performance in the isosynthesis has been investigated in present study. The isosynthesis was carried out in a fixed-bed flow pressurized quartz lined stainless steel tubular reactor under 5.0 MPa (CO/H2=1/1) and 698 K. Pr6O11 showed an activity for the formation of iso-C4 hydrocarbons in the isosynthesis. The incorporation of Pr into ZrO2 changed some properties of ZrO2 and subsequently affected the catalytic performance of the catalysts in the isosynthesis.
Synthesis of C3+ Alcohols Through Ethanol Condensation and Carbon-Carbon Coupling of Ethanol with CO2

Abstract:C3+ alcohols are widely used as organic solvents, raw chemicals and fuel additives. However, the self-condensation of alcohol can limit the distribution of products. Herein, the binary metal oxide ZnO-ZrO2 with solid solution structure was prepared and applied into the synthesis of higher alcohols through the ethanol condensation and the coupling of ethanol with the CO2 hydrogenation. The optimized 0.3ZnO-ZrO2 solid-solution catalyst shows that ethanol conversion can reach 29% with the C3+ alcohols (1-propanol, 1-butanol and 1-hexanol) selectivity of 67%. The high selectivity of C3+ alcohols can be attributed to the acid-base bifunction for performing the condensation of ethanol and the coupling of ethanol and the CHxO intermediates that are produced through CO2 hydrogenation. This work opens a new avenue for the synthesis of C3+ alcohols.

Abstract:The carbonylation of formaldehyde with carbon monoxide was carried out over two kinds of cation-exchange resins as solid acid catalysts. Effects of reaction conditions on the catalytic performance were studied. From H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, IR, and GC-MS analyses of the products obtained, ii. was found that 1,3-dioxolan-4-one (1,3-DOX-4) is selectively produced over the cation-exchange resins. The carbonylation of formaldehyde with carbon monoxide over the cation-exchange resins proceeds under milder reaction conditions, as compared with HZSM-5 zeolite.

Abstract:Artificial synthesis of carbohydrates has been a long-standing goal for chemists. Formose reaction is an established non-enzymatic one-step route to monosaccharides from a C1 source, where formaldehyde (HCHO) is polymerized under basic conditions. However, bases can lead to multiple side reactions. Thiazolium salts, when activated by a suitable base, can catalyze HCHO condensation to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) via umpolung aldehyde activation, but they can slowly lose their activity due to product adsorption to the active site. Here, we report a heterogeneous, base-free formaldehyde condensation to DHA using a reactor based on a Soxhlet extractor, which quickly separates the product from the solid catalyst during the reaction. This design not only leads to a stable catalytic operation but also constitutes a clean HCHO-to-DHA conversion system. This oligomerization of formaldehyde to DHA completes a critical step in converting CO 2 to sugar, including CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol (CH 3 OH), CH 3 OH oxidation to HCHO, HCHO oligomerization to DHA, and DHA condensation to higher carbohydrates.

Abstract:The conversion of methanol‐to‐hydrocarbons (MTH) over zeolite catalysts has been the subject of intense research since its discovery. Great effort has been devoted to the investigation of four key topics: the initiation of C‐C bonds, the establishment of hydrocarbon pool (HCP), the adjustment of product selectivity, and the deactivation process of catalysts. Despite 50 years of study, some mechanisms remain controversial. However, an intermediate species, formaldehyde (HCHO), has recently garnered considerable attention for its influence on the entire MTH process. The discovery of HCHO and its significant role in the MTH process has been facilitated by the application of in situ analytical techniques, such as synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SR‐PIMS) and photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy (PEPICO). It is now revealed that HCHO is involved in the initiation, propagation, and termination process of MTH reaction. Such mechanistic understanding of HCHO's involvement has provided valuable insights for optimizing the MTH process.

Here we describe an enantioselective intermolecular Prins reaction of styrenes and paraformaldehyde to form 1,3-dioxanes, using confined imino-imidodiphosphate (<i>i</i>IDP) Brønsted acid catalysts. Isotope labeling experiments and computations suggest a concerted, highly asynchronous addition of an acid-activated formaldehyde oligomer to the olefin. The enantioenriched 1,3-dioxanes can be transformed into the corresponding optically active 1,3-diols, which are valuable synthetic building blocks.

Abstract:3-Hydroxypropanal (3-HPA) is formed by the cross-aldol reaction of formaldehyde (HCHO) with acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), which further converts to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO). Mg/SiO2 and X-5Mg/SiO2 (X = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) catalysts were prepared using the sol–gel method and characterized with XRD, BET, TEM, and NH3- and CO2-TPD methods. The 5Mg/SiO2 showed higher activity in terms of the yield and selectivity due to its suitable basic and acidic density. The addition of Mn to the 5Mg/SiO2 catalyst caused dispelling of weak basic sites but maintained strong basic sites, and the high CH3CHO conversion was maintained. The increase of weak acidic sites contributed to the increase of 3-HPA selectivity for the 1Mn-5Mg/SiO2 catalyst. The cross-aldol reaction of HCHO with CH3CHO to produce 3-HPA more easily proceeded than the self-aldol reaction of CH3CHO according to the reaction kinetic analysis. Furthermore, Raney nickel was successfully applied to the hydrogenation process of 3-HPA to 1,3-PDO with over 90% HPA conversion and 1,3-PDO selectivity.
