Abstract:Due to the mirror symmetry breaking, chiral structures show fantastic electromagnetic (EM) properties involving negative refraction, giant optical activity, circular dichroism and asymmetric transmission. Aligned electric and magnetic dipoles excited in chiral structures contribute to the extraordinary properties. However, the chiral structures that exhibit n-fold rotational symmetry show a limited tunability of the chirality. In this paper, we propose a compact, light, and highly tunable anisotropic chiral structure to overcome this limitation and realize a linear-to-circular polarization conversion. The anisotropy is due to simultaneous excitations of two different pairs of aligned electric and magnetic dipoles. The 3-D omega-shaped structure, etched on two sides of one printed circuit board (PCB) with connecting metallic vias, achieves 60% of linear-to- circular conversion (transmission) efficiency at the operating frequency of 9.2 GHz. The desired 90 degrees phase shift between the two orthogonal linear polarizations is not only from the chirality but also from the anisotropic chiral response slightly off the resonance. The work enables elegant and practical polarization control of EM waves.
Spatially Dispersive Dichroism in Bianisotropic Metamirrors

Abstract:Dichroism refers to the differential absorption of a material for different polarized waves and has important applications in polarimetry and optical wavefront manipulation. The coexistence of strong linear and circular dichroism at thin optical interfaces is usually challenging due to the weak chiral anisotropy in natural materials. Here, we investigate the spatially dispersive dichroism of bianisotropic metamirror, in which giant linear and circular dichroism can be achieved simultaneously. By covering the metallic mirror with an array of bianisotropic resonators, specific linearly and circularly polarized waves can be largely absorbed under normal and oblique incidences, respectively. This intriguing phenomenon is attributed to the anisotropic magneto-electric coupling, that is, the handedness and the strength of the equivalent transverse electric surface current are determined by the angle of incidence. Furthermore, dual-band and hybrid-chirality metamirrors for asymmetric spin reflection have been realized by adjusting the geometries and arrangement of the bianisotropic resonators. The overall thickness of the bianisotropic metamirror is only 1/50 of the wavelength and thus highly suitable for on-chip integration. Our findings may provide an alternative approach towards multifunctional optical mirrors, signal detectors, chiral imaging devices, and molecular analyzers.

Abstract:Chiral enantiomers have significant differences in biochemical functions. The use of THz wave polarization detection to characterize the optical properties of chiral substances is of great significance to the development of life science and the identification and application of chiral substances. However, the traditional polarization detection procedures of THz waves are complex, which limits the study of chiral substances. Herein, we proposed a high-sensitivity THz polarization detector, which can simultaneously obtain the change information of amplitude, phase, and polarization state through a single measurement. The optical rotation and elliptical angle of solid and liquid D/L-Glutamic acid 5-methyl ester in the THz band are studied. Then it is verified that anisotropic interference may occur in the preparation of solid samples. Finally, the effects of sample content and thickness on polarization are obtained. The experimental results show that different chirality has the opposite effect on the state of polarization, and the difference between chiral enantiomers can be detected by this method. This work is of great significance for understanding the optical properties of chiral substances and promoting the development of chiral recognition.

Abstract:A transmission optical rotation detection scheme based on a weak measurement was proposed for the chirality detection of enantiomers. In this transmission weak measurement system in the frequency domain, the optical activity of the chiral liquid sample was estimated with the central wavelength shift, by modifying the preselected polarization state with the optical rotation (OR). The central wavelength shift of output spectra is sensitive to the OR angle but immune to the interference of the refractive index change caused by measuring circumstances. Two isomers of chiral amino acid acquired opposite responses with this system, and a resolution of 2.17 x 10(-9) mol/ml for Proline detection could be obtained. Such a resolution is about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of common methods, which shows a high sensitivity. This proposed weak measurement scenario suggested an approach to polarimetry and provided a way to accurately assess molecular chirality. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Chirality is an essential consideration in the field of life sciences and pharmaceutical industry because most biomolecules and pharmaceuticals are chiral, and optical rotation measurement is a simple and efficient means for identification, purity test and content detection of chiral materials. However, there are some drawbacks in existing methods, such as small measurement range, non-real-time performance, low measurement accuracy and resolution. This paper presents a novel system to implement optical rotation measurement, and pixelated polarization cameras and Stokes parameters are employed in the system. The polarization information of linearly polarized incident light can be recorded and extracted by a pixelated polarization camera and Stokes parameters respectively. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed system has the necessary advantages for optical rotation measurement, such as real time, wide range (- 90 degrees to+ 90 degrees), high accuracy (1 x 10(-4)degrees) and high resolution (+/- 6 x 10(-6)degrees). Thus, this measurement system has great practical prospects in the hospital clinical diagnosis, chemical research, sugar production and pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:Detecting and controlling the chirality of materials play an essential role in exploring nature, providing new avenues for material creation, discrimination, and manipulation. In such tasks, chiral reagents are essential in defining or enhancing the chiral dichroism response. However, ignoring their influences on the symmetry of the medium hamper the ability to control and induce asymmetric synthesis. Here, we propose a simple but versatile chirality transfer method for synthesizing and manipulating the chirality of medium. The proposed method induces the dispersion of light in a neutral atomic system, allowing to deterministically and tunably control the chirality transfer using a helical field. First, we theoretically analyze the mechanism for this optically induced chirality transfer. Afterwards, we experimentally study the enantio-sensitive feature of the medium exposed to the auxiliary chiral field. This result can be suppressed or enhanced in a deterministic enantio-selection, opening up an efficient way to manipulate asymmetric synthesis.

Magnetic-free Chiral Eigenmode Spectroscopy for Simultaneous Sensitive Measurement of Optical Rotary Dispersion and Circular Dichroism

Abstract:Chirality, defined by Lord Kelvin, refers to the geometric symmetry property of an object that cannot be superposed onto its mirror image using rotations and translations. The material’s chirality can be probed with light as the optical activity: optical rotary dispersion (ORD) and circular dichroism (CD). It is still challenging to yield extremely sensitive ORD and CD for very weak chirality and measure both simultaneously. Cavity ringdown polarimetry has been reported to improve ORD detection sensitivity with the absence of equally important CD signature, at the price of high cavity finesse near 400, frequency-locking sophistication, and large magnetic field. Here, we report a unique recipe to demonstrate the simultaneous measurement of ORD and the CD by separately observing the chiral eigenmode spectra from a bowtie optical cavity with a finesse about 30, without resorting to frequency locking or magnetic field. We obtain a sensitivity of ∼ 2.7× 10^-3deg/√(Hz) for ORD, ∼ 8.1 × 10^-6 /√(Hz) for CD, and a spectral resolution of 0.04 pm within a millisecond-scale measurement. We present a cost-effective yet ultrasensitive account for chiral chromatography, the conformational dynamics and chiroptical analysis of biological samples which particularly exhibit weak and narrow spectral signals.
Gigantic Vortical Differential Scattering As a Monochromatic Probe for Multiscale Chiral Structures.

Abstract:Significance Optical chirality by light–matter interaction is a powerful strategy for discriminating the chirality of materials in modern physics. Here we present a vortex-dependent approach to yield a direct chiroptical response with monochromatic light. The chiroptical signal of ∼120% is obtained on intrinsically chiral microstructures by optical vortices in the visible range. The chiroptical properties of microstructures can be flexibly controlled by tuning their geometric features. We further demonstrate the strong chiral light–matter interaction by optical vortices for sensitively detecting optical chirality of molecules. Spin angular momentum of light is vital to investigate enantiomers characterized by circular dichroism (CD), widely adopted in biology, chemistry, and material science. However, to discriminate chiral materials with multiscale features, CD spectroscopy normally requires wavelength-swept laser sources as well as wavelength-specific optical accessories. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an orbital-angular-momentum-assisted approach to yield chiroptical signals with monochromatic light. The gigantic vortical differential scattering (VDS) of ∼120% is achieved on intrinsically chiral microstructures fabricated by femtosecond laser. The VDS measurements can robustly generate chiroptical properties on microstructures with varying geometric features (e.g., diameters and helical pitches) and detect chiral molecules with high sensitivity. This VDS scheme lays a paradigm-shift pavement toward efficiently chiroptical discrimination of multiscale chiral structures with photonic orbital angular momentum. It simplifies and complements the conventional CD spectroscopy, opening possibilities for measuring weak optical chirality, especially on mesoscale chiral architectures and macromolecules.

Abstract:Optical differential operations possess the remarkable advantages of high efficiency and real-time imaging, which can improve the ability of image processing to enhance image edge detection. The photonic spin Hall effect has been demonstrated to realize optical differential operations. However, the direction of optical differential operation generated by the conventional photonic spin Hall effect is single and fixed. Here, we propose a scheme for the rotational photonic spin Hall effect on twisted bilayer metasurfaces to obtain the optical differential operations in any desirable directions and phase reconstruction. The rotation angle of the rotational photonic spin Hall effect is defined as the tangent of the in-plane spin-dependent shift to the transverse spin-dependent shift. The twist angle of the bilayer metasurfaces influence the Fresnel reflection coefficients which affect the transverse spin-dependent shift and the in-plane spin-dependent shift. Therefore, the direction of rotational photonic spin Hall effect can be controlled by the twist angle of the bilayer metasurfaces. Moreover, we show applications of the rotational photonic spin Hall effect including image edge detection and phase reconstruction. These findings open up new horizons for future applications of the rotational photonic spin Hall effect in optics.

Evanescent-wave and open-air chiral sensing via signal-reversing cavity-enhanced polarimetry

Abstract:Sensing chirality is of fundamental importance to many fields, including analytical and biological chemistry, pharmacology, and fundamental physics. Recent developments have extended optical chiral sensing using microwaves, fs pulses, superchiral light, and photoionization. The most widely used methods are the traditional methods of circular dichroism and optical rotation (OR). However, chiral signals are typically very weak, and their measurement is limited by larger time-dependent backgrounds and by imperfect and slow subtraction procedures. Here, we demonstrate a pulsed-laser bowtie-cavity-enhanced polarimeter with counter-propagating beams, which solves these background problems: the chiral signals are enhanced by the number of cavity passes; the effects of linear birefringence are suppressed by a large induced intracavity Faraday rotation; and rapid signal reversals are effected by reversing the Faraday rotation and subtracting signals from the counter-propagating beams. These advantages allow measurements of absolute chiral signals in environments where background subtractions are not feasible: we measure optical rotation from chiral vapour in open air, and from chiral liquids in the evanescent wave (EW) produced by total internal reflection at a prism surface. EW-OR of (+)-maltodextrin and (-)-fructose solutions confirm the Drude-Condon model for Maxwell's equations in isotropic optically active media. In particular, the effective optical rotation path length, near index matching, is equal to the Goos-Hänchen shift of the EW. The limits of this polarimeter, when using a continuous-wave laser locked to a stable high-finesse cavity, should match sensitivity measurements for linear birefringence ($3\times 10^{-13}$ rad), which is several orders of magnitude more sensitive than current chiral detection limits, transforming the power of chiral sensing in many fields.

Abstract:Enantiodetection of chiral molecules is important to chemical reaction control and biological function designs. Traditional optical methods of enantiodetection rely on the weak magnetic-dipole or electric-quadrupole interactions, and in turn suffer from the weak signal and low sensitivity. We propose a new optical enantiodetection method to determine the enantiomeric excess via two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy of the chiral mixture driven by three electromagnetic fields. The quantities of left- and right-handed chiral molecules are reflected by the intensities of different peaks on the 2D spectrum, separated by the chirality-dependent frequency shifts resulting from the relative strong electric-dipole interactions between the chiral molecules and the driving fields. Abstract:Plasma membranes have been prepared from porcine thyroid cells stimulated by dibutyryl adenosine 3′:5′-monophosphate in culture. These cells show the histiotypic organization in follicles and the metabolic properties of gland follicular cells. The plasma-membrane fractions have a density in sucrose of 1.18 g/ml (about 80%) and 1.16 g/ml (about 20%). The yield is 2 mg per 6 × 108 cells. Electron microscopy showed vesicular structures and sheets of membranes often joined by membrane junctions. Both showed the triple layer characteristic of the unit membrane ultrastructure. Less than 3% of contamination by microsomes was derived from the assay of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and NADH oxidase. No contamination by mitochondria was indicated from succinate dehydrogenase activity measurements. NaF-and thyrotropin-stimulated adenylate cyclase, 5′-nucleotidase and alkaline phosphatase are concentrated in the plasma-membrane preparations. Specific binding of 125I-labeled thyrotropin of high specific radioactivity (2.5 Ci/μmol) and preserved biological activity was compared to that in intact cells and to the plasma membranes from which they derived. The rate constants of the thyrotropin association with cell or membrane (0.56 and 0.11 nM−1 min−1, respectively) and dissociation (0.36 and 0.25 min−1, respectively) were measured independently at 35°C (cells) and 27°C (membranes). The association constants derived from these rate constants (1.5 and 0.4 nM−1 for cells and membranes) are very similar to that (1.9 and 0.6 nM−1) determined independently from equilibrium data. Therefore plasma membranes purified from cultured thyroid cells represent an excellent material to study the molecular events linked to receptor activation. The relation between thyrotropin concentration and adenylate cyclase activation of membranes was studied in time conditions of equilibrium binding of thyrotropin. The semilogarithmic plot of thyrotropin concentration correlates sigmoidally with the percentage of adenylate cyclase activation. Half-maximum stimulation is obtained for a thyrotropin concentration of 1.8 nM which correlates remarkably with the dissociation constant of 1.78 nM determined for the binding of the hormone to membranes.

Abstract:<p>Optical chirality is an effective means in screening molecules and their enantiomers in bioengineering, and recently has garnered attention as an implementation of qubits in quantum information processing. The conventional detection of circularly polarized light (CPL) is based on phase retardation and polarization separation using multiple optical components. An intrinsic solid‐state chirality detection device would be favorable for easier integration and implementation. Optical spin injection to the spin‐momentum‐locked topological surface states of topological insulators (TIs) by circularly polarized light leads to a directional DC photocurrent and hence possible circular polarization detection. However, this DC photocurrent is also accompanied by other photo‐responses. Here, a photodetection strategy using a TI transistor which senses CPL without the use of any additional components is demonstrated, it achieves a uniform response over the entire device with a sensitivity ≈5.6%. The Stokes parameters can also be extracted by arithmetic operation of photocurrents obtained with different bias and gate for a complete characterization of a polarized light beam. Therefore, this method enables chirality detection and Stokes parameter analysis using a single device. The proposed miniaturized intrinsic chirality detectors facilitate polarimetry sensing in applications from circular dichroism spectroscopy to biomedical diagnosis.</p>

Designable optical differential operation based on surface plasmon resonance

Abstract:Various optical differential computing devices have been designed, which have advantages of high speed and low power consumption compared with traditional digital computing. In this paper, considering the reflection of a light beam through a three-layer structure composed of glass, metal and air, we propose a designable optical differential operation based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). When the SPR is excited under certain conditions, the spin-dependent splitting in the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) changes dramatically. We first prove theoretically that this three-layer structure can realize one-dimensional optical differential operation. By discussing the transverse beam displacement under different conditions, it is found that the designable differential operation with high sensitivity can be realized by slightly adjusting the incident angle and the thickness of metal film. We design the differentiator which can obtain the image of measured target edge in real time and get different edge effects at different times. This will provide more possible applications for autonomous driving and target recognition.
A Chiral Sensor Based on Weak Measurement for the Determination of Proline Enantiomers in Diverse Measuring Circumstances.

Abstract:A new chiral sensor based on weak measurement to accurately measure the optical rotation (OR) has been developed for the estimation of a trace amount of chiral molecule. With the principle of optical weak measurement in frequency domain, the central wavelength shift of output spectra is quantitatively relative to the angle of preselected polarization. Hence, a chiral molecule (e.g., L-amino acid, or D-amino acid) can be enantioselectively determined by modifying the preselection angle with the OR, which will cause the rotation of a polarization plane. The concentration of the chiral sample, corresponding to its optical activity, is quantitatively analyzed with the central wavelength shift of output spectra, which can be collected in real time. Immune to the refractive index change, the proposed chiral sensor is valid in complicated measuring circumstance. The detections of Proline enantiomer concentration in different solvents were implemented. The results demonstrated that weak measurement acted as a reliable method to chiral recognition of Proline enantiomers in diverse circumstance with the merits of high precision and good robustness. In addition, this real-time monitoring approach plays a crucial part in asymmetric synthesis and biological systems.

Abstract:Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy has been widely demonstrated for detecting chiral molecules. However, the determination of chiral mixtures with various concentrations and enantiomeric ratios can be a challenging task. To solve this problem, we report an enhanced vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) sensing platform based on plasmonic chiral metamaterials, which presents a 6-magnitude signal enhancement with a selectivity of chiral molecules. Guided by coupled-mode theory, we leverage both in-plane and out-of-plane symmetry-breaking structures for chiral metamaterial design enabled by a two-step lithography process, which increases the near-field coupling strengths and varies the ratio between absorption and radiation loss, resulting in improved chiral light-matter interaction and enhanced molecular VCD signals. Besides, we demonstrate the thin-film sensing process of BSA and β-lactoglobulin proteins, which contain secondary structures α-helix and β-sheet and achieve a limit of detection down to zeptomole level. Furthermore, we also, for the first time, explore the potential of enhanced VCD spectroscopy by demonstrating a selective sensing process of chiral mixtures, where the mixing ratio can be successfully differentiated with our proposed chiral metamaterials.
