Abstract:Evaluation of the outdoor thermal comfort and comprehension of the impact of urban morphology are essential for assessing heat-related risks and implementing urban planning strategies that enhance the resilience of urban populations to extreme heat events. However, the challenge lies in achieving city-wide thermal comfort mapping at high spatial and temporal resolutions, which requires consideration of the complex urban morphology (urban geometry and land cover) at a microscale, as well as the background meteorological factors at larger scale. Here, we introduce an effective framework for city-scale thermal comfort mapping at high spatial-temporal resolution that integrates WRF-UCM and SOLWEIG model, aiming to achieve fine-grained thermal comfort mapping at the city scale and to explore the impact of urban morphology on these thermal conditions. In the proposed framework, we employ the WRF-UCM model (The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the urban canopy model) to establish the background meteorological condition at local-scale (500m resolution). Additionally, we utilize the SOLWEIG (Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry) model for the simulation of mean radiant temperature at a finer micro-scale (10m resolution), a critical determinant of thermal comfort. These simulations are performed using detailed 3D urban morphological data and land cover information. Subsequently, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is calculated on hourly basis, integrating the aforementioned factors. A case study conducted for a Chinese city with a population of 15 million demonstrates a significant correction between the rise in the UTCI during daytime and an increase in impervious surface area, evidenced by a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.80. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the significance of tree canopy coverage in mitigating heat, demonstrating that an implementation of 40% tree cover could diminish daytime UTCI by approximately 1.5 to 2.0 ºC. This methodological framework is not only instrumental in assessing heat-related risks and human thermal discomfort within intricate urban environments but also offers pivotal insights for the adoption of climate-resilient urban planning strategies.
Urban Heat Mitigation towards Climate Change Adaptation: An Eco-Sustainable Design Strategy to Improve Environmental Performance under Rapid Urbanization

Abstract:Rapid urbanization has led to drastic land-use/cover changes (LUCCs) and urban heat islands (UHIs), negatively altering the urban climate and air quality. LUCC's significant impacts on human health and energy consumption have inspired researchers to develop nature-based solutions to mitigate UHIs and improve air quality. However, integrating GIS-CFD modeling for urban heat mitigation towards climate change adaptation was largely neglected for eco-sustainable urban design in rapidly urbanizing areas. In this study, (1) long-term LUCC and meteorological analyzes were conducted in the Wuhan metropolitan area from 1980 to 2016; (2) to mitigate the adverse effects of LUCC under a speedy development process, the role and relevance of optimizing building morphology and urban block configuration were discussed; (3) and particular design attention in strategy towards climate change adaptation for environmental performance improvement was paid in Wuhan's fast-growing zones. The results show that UHII in 1980 was less severe than in 2016. Air temperature (Ta) increased by 0.4 °C on average per decade in developing areas. This increases the severity of UHII in urban fringes. It is found obligatory for a nature-based design to adopt urban morphology indicators (UMIs) such as average building height (μBH), sky view factors (ψSVF), and building density (BD/λp = % of built area) towards these changes. Further, on-site measurement revealed that λp is the most effective indicator for increasing urban heat around the buildings and boosting UHII. Using UMIs and a combined three-in-one regulation strategy based on μBH of common building types of high-rise (BHA), mid-rise (BHB), and low-rise (BHC) buildings can effectively contribute to regulating Ta and air movement within block configuration. As a result of this study's strategy, urban heat is mitigated via reinforcing wind in order to adapt to climate change, which impacts the quality of life directly in developing areas.

Abstract:The capability to evaluate city-scale outdoor thermal comfort is crucial for understanding the public's experience of heat stress, especially during heat waves. Nevertheless, there remains a methodological gap in accurately mapping thermal comfort with high spatial and temporal resolutions in complex urban environment and in quantifying the contributions of various urban climate drivers, such as sky view factors and tree canopy fraction. To bridge this gap, we propose an innovative WRF-UCM-SOLWEIG framework that couples a mesoscale model with an urban microclimate model. Specifically, it integrates the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the urban canopy model (WRF-UCM) and the Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry model (SOLWEIG). This framework is then applied to a densely populated tropical city in China, to quantify the impact of urban climate drivers on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). The results reveal a significant diurnal variation in the impact of urban morphology. Notably, the most significant drivers affecting daytime UTCI are the impervious surface fraction and the tree canopy fraction, with maximum Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.80 and -0.70, respectively. These findings suggest that urban heat mitigation strategies should prioritize on reducing impervious surfaces and enhancing shade management, alongside expanding urban forestry measures.
Identifying urban ventilation corridors through quantitative analysis of ventilation potential and wind characteristics

Abstract:Urban heat islands (UHIs) are mainly caused by mismanaged urban development. Urban ventilation corridors (UVCs) can effectively reduce UHIs. Hangzhou, a large, dense city in eastern China, is one of the nation's hottest cities and must urgently improve its ventilation. In this study, a newly developed method combining land surface temperature retrieval, GIS spatial analysis, and weather data was employed to design city-level UVCs. The functional space and compensation space of UVCs are identified based on the LandsatETM8 image data inversion of surface temperature. The contribution of affect factors, such as building density, building height, green land area, waterbody, roads, and urban terrain, to the urban ventilation potential is calculated using AHP and GIS. Areas with tremendous ventilation potential were identified as possible ventilation corridors by using an evaluation model and considering wind characteristics. Fifty-four high-temperature zones and 48 low-temperature zones were identified as functional and compensative spaces in Hangzhou, respectively. On the urban scale, green space (area >500ha), water bodies (area >300ha or width >100 m), and roads (width >50 m) were considered to be the factors that have the greatest impact on urban ventilation potential. The LCP method was used to verify the accuracy and rationality of the method proposed in this study to determine the city-scale UVC. UVC planning schemes and construction measures were proposed to provide rich information and a reference basis for the new general land and space planning of Hangzhou. However, to improve the accuracy of the potential ventilation results, the urban underlying surface criteria should be re-evaluated more comprehensively.

Abstract:Air pollution is a significant global environmental issue. Nevertheless, the importance of rational urban planning in mitigating it is frequently disregarded. Conducting air quality optimization simulations that consider UFIs (urban form indicators) is an effective approach for air quality-friendly urban planning. Despite its potential, this technique is still in its infancy. This study aims to identify research gaps and uncertainties by summarizing the current research status of key steps in air quality optimization simulation: selecting UFIs, analyzing impact mechanisms of UFIs on air pollution, building air quality models, and proposing optimization strategies through multiple-scenario predictions. Our findings indicate a lack of consistency in selecting UFIs, and an indicator system considers their impact on air quality and urban planning standards proposed by us might be a viable option. Increases in the proportion of construction land, industrial land, and floor area ratio significantly contribute to air pollution, whereas factors such as forest land, public green space, and sky openness have a noteworthy alleviating effect. Typically, statistical modeling is preferred at the city scale while CFD simulation techniques are used at smaller scales. However, future air quality improving through UFIs optimization still lacks a multi-scale nested tool. Thus, further research is recommended to explore combined impacts of various UFIs on different air pollutants under typical scenarios, and develop intelligent, big data-driven air quality models and tools. This review might contribute to transforming air quality optimization that consider UFIs from fragmented academic research to practical application, thereby assisting in global air pollution mitigation efforts.

Abstract:Urban ventilation corridors (UVCs) have the potential to effectively mitigate urban heat islands and air pollution. Shanghai, a densely populated city located in eastern China, is among the hottest cities in the country and requires urgent measures in order to enhance its ventilation system. This study introduces a novel approach that integrates land surface temperature retrieval, PM2.5 concentration retrieval, and wind field simulation to design UVCs at the city level. Through remote sensing data inversion of land surface temperature (LST) and PM2.5 concentration, the study identifies the action spaces and compensation spaces for UVCs. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, coupled with the multilayer urban scheme Building Effect Parameterization (BEP) model, is employed to numerically simulate and analyze the wind field. Based on the identification of thirty high-temperature zones and high PM2.5 concentration zones as action spaces, and twenty-two low-temperature zones and low PM2.5 concentration zones as compensation spaces in Shanghai, the study constructs seven first-class ventilation corridors and nine secondary ventilation corridors according to local circulation patterns. Unlike previous UVC research, this study assesses the cleanliness of cold air, which is a common oversight in UVC planning. Ignoring the assessment of cold air cleanliness can result in less effective UVCs in improving urban air quality and even exacerbate air pollution in the central city. Therefore, this study serves as a crucial contribution by rectifying this significant deficiency. It not only provides a fresh perspective and methodology for urban-scale ventilation corridor planning but also contributes to enhancing the urban microclimate by mitigating the effects of urban heat islands and reducing air pollution, ultimately creating a livable and comfortable environment for urban residents.
Multi-objective Optimization Design of Residential Area Based on Microenvironment Simulation

Abstract:In current research on old communities, less attention is given to the comfort and greenhouse gas emissions of the indoor and outdoor physical environment. Only a few studies focus on optimization strategies for these envi-ronments in old communities. Thus, the absence of suitable theoretical guidance in specific engineering practices can lead to issues. Renovated old communities still face challenges such as overheating in summer, overcooling in winter, and high energy consumption. In this article, based on the optimization of low-and medium-rise old communities in five typical cities in China, corresponding strategies such as geometric and envelope design parameters are proposed in terms of building greenhouse gas emission and indoor and outdoor thermal envi-ronment comfort. Several methods are employed in this study, including parametric simulation using Grass-hopper with the Ladybug and Honeybee plugins for data collection. This research conduct sensitivity analysis using Random Forest Regressor (RFR), Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR) and Decision Tree Regressor (DTR) to explore the relationship between design variables and environmental objectives. Predictive modeling with ensemble models and multi-objective optimization using the NSGA-2 algorithm help identify optimal design parameters for varied urban climates. The results demonstrated indoor and outdoor comfort of communities can be improved to a greater extent while reducing carbon emissions. Quantitatively, compared to the baseline model, all cities except Wuhan can improve the year-round comfort time of the outdoor thermal environment by more than 50%. Besides, communities in hot summer and warm winter regions (e.g. Shenzhen and Nanning) can reduce their annual carbon emissions by more than 300t, and communities in hot summer and cold winter re-gions (e.g. Hangzhou, Chengdu and Wuhan) can reduce their annual carbon emissions by more than 100t. The research results will serve as a scientific basis for energy saving and emission reduction and provide decision -making methods for the development of old communities.

Abstract:A comfortable wind environment in urban waterfront area (UWA) is critical to improving the quality of life of surrounding residents and environment sustainability. In this study, the porous media model was combined with the water–air interface exchange model to conduct high-precision three-dimensional (3D) simulation of the ventilation environment at an urban waterfront. The results of this study indicate that the accuracy of the proposed model is as high as 95%. This model can be used to efficiently simulate urban ventilation and pedestrian wind environment comfort at different heights (1.5, 10, and 30 m) in a certain high-density 3D UWA. The order of ventilation potential of different types of urban areas is road space, green space, and river space. In summer, the pedestrian wind environment around the Gongshu section of the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal was discovered to have low comfort at a height of 1.5 m. In winter, the wind comfort of the UWA on both sides of the canal is greatly affected by the direction of incoming wind, showing satisfactory ventilation performance when reaching heights of 10 and 30m. Accurate and efficient 3D simulation of urban ventilation is very helpful for adaptive planning and design of urban wind environment.

Abstract:Under the trend in climate change, global warming, and the increasingly serious urban heat island effect, promoting urban wind corridor planning to reduce urban temperature and mitigate the effect of urban heat islands has received widespread attention in many cities. With emerging awareness of the need to explicitly incorporate climate considerations into urban planning and design, integrating current spatial analysis and simulation tools to enhance urban wind corridor planning to obtain the best urban ventilation effect has become an increasingly important research topic in green city development. However, how to systematically carry out urban wind corridor planning by employing related technology and simulation tools is a topic that needs to be explored urgently in both theory and practice. Taking Zhumadian City in China as an example, this study proposes a method and planning approach that uses remote sensing (RS), geographic information system (GIS), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in an integrated way to understand urban landscape and to conduct urban wind corridor planning. The research results reveal that the urban form of Zhumadian City favors the development of urban wind corridors, and that the railway lines and some major roads in the city have the potential to be developed as the city's main wind corridors. However, there are still ventilation barriers resulting from the existing land use model and building layout patterns that need to be adjusted. In terms of local-level analysis, the CFD simulation analysis also reveals that some common building layout patterns may result in environments with poor ventilation. Finally, based on the results of our empirical analysis and local planning environment, specific suggestions are provided on how to develop appropriate strategies for urban wind corridor planning and adjustments related to land use planning and building layout patterns in order to mitigate the impact of the urban heat island effect.

An Investigation of the Quantitative Correlation Between Urban Morphology Parameters and Outdoor Ventilation Efficiency Indices

Abstract:Urban outdoor ventilation and pollutant dispersion have important implications for urban design and planning. In this paper, two urban morphology parameters, i.e. the floor area ratio (FAR) and the building site coverage (BSC), are considered to investigate their quantitative correlation with urban ventilation indices. An idealized model, including nine basic units with FAR equal to 5, is considered and the BSC is increased from 11% to 77%, generating 101 non-repetitive asymmetric configurations, with attention to the influence of plan density, volume ratio, and building layout on ventilation performance within urban plot areas. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to assess the ventilation efficiency at pedestrian level (2m above the ground) within each model central area. Six indices, including the air flow rate (Q), the mean age of air (τP), the net escape velocity (NEV), the purging flow rate (PFR), the visitation frequency (VF), and the resident time (TP) are used to assess the local ventilation performance. Results clearly show that, fixing the FAR, the local ventilation performance is not linearly related to BSC, but it also depends on buildings arrangement. Specifically, as the BSC increases, the ventilation in the central area does not keep reducing. On the contrary, some forms with low BSC have poor ventilation and some particular configurations with high BSC have better ventilation, which indicates that not all high-density configurations experience poor ventilation. The local ventilation performance can be effectively improved by rationally arranging the buildings. Even though the application of these results to real cities requires further research, the present findings suggest a preliminary way to build up a correlation between urban morphology parameters and ventilation efficiency tailored to develop a feasible framework for urban designers.
The Ventilation Efficiency of Urban Built Intensity and Ventilation Path Identification: A Case Study of Wuhan

Abstract:Urban ventilation is being hampered by rough surfaces in dense urban areas, and the microclimate and air quality of the urban built environment are not ideal. Identifying urban ventilation paths is helpful to save energy, reduce emissions, and improve the urban ecological environment. Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei, and it has a high urban built intensity and hot summers. Taking Wuhan city, with a size of 35 km ×50 km, as an example, the built environment was divided into grids of 100 m × 100 m and included the building density, floor area ratio, and average building height. The ventilation mechanism of the urban built intensity index has previously been explained. The decrease in building density is not the sole factor causing an increase in wind speed; the enclosure and width of the ventilation path and the height of the front building are also influential. Twelve urban built units were selected for CFD numerical simulation. The ventilation efficiency of each grid was evaluated by calculating the wind speed ratio, maximum wind speed, average wind speed, and area ratio of strong wind. The relationship between the urban built intensity index and ventilation efficiency index was established using the factor analysis method and the Pearson correlation coefficient; building density and average building height are the most critical indexes of ventilation potential. In addition, the layout of the building also has an important impact on ventilation. A suitable built environment is that in which the building density is less than 30%, the average building height is greater than 15 m, and the floor area ratio is greater than 1.5. The urban built intensity map was weighted to identify urban ventilation paths. The paper provides a quantitative reference for scientific planning and design of the urban spatial form to improve ventilation.
Identification of Urban Ventilation Corridor System Using Meteorology and GIS Technology: A Case Study in Zhengzhou, China

Abstract:Urban ventilation corridors are designed to enhance air quality, alleviate urban thermal conditions, reduce pollution and energy consumption, as well as improve human comfort within cities. They play a pivotal role in mitigating environmental impacts, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Based on satellite remote sensing data, meteorological observations, basic geographic information of Zhengzhou City and its surroundings, and urban planning data, we analyzed the urban wind environment, urban heat island, ecological cold sources, and ventilation potential. The findings reveal several key insights: (1) Dominant winds in Zhengzhou City predominantly originate from the northwest, northeast, and south, influenced by topography and the monsoon climate, with seasonal variations. These wind patterns are crucial considerations for designing primary ventilation corridors. (2) The urban heat island exhibits a polycentric spatial distribution, with intensity decreasing from the city center towards the periphery. Ecological cold sources, primarily situated in the city outskirts, act as reservoirs of fresh air that mitigate the urban heat island effect through designated corridors. (3) A preliminary corridor system, termed "eight primary and thirteen secondary corridors", is proposed for Zhengzhou City based on an integrated assessment of ventilation potential, urban surface roughness, and sky view factor. This research contributes to advancing the understanding of urban ventilation systems and provides practical insights for policymakers, urban planners, and researchers seeking sustainable solutions to mitigate climate impacts in rapidly urbanizing environments in the region.

Evaluation of the Street Canyon Level Air Pollution Distribution Pattern in a Typical City Block in Baoding, China

Abstract:Urban traffic pollution, which is strongly influenced by the complex urban morphology, has posed a great threat to human health. In this study, we performed a high-resolution simulation of traffic pollution in a typical city block in Baoding, China, based on the Parallelized Large-eddy simulation Model (PALM), to examine the distribution patterns of traffic-related pollutants and explore their relationship with urban morphology. Based on the model results, we conducted a multi-linear regression (MLR) analysis and found that the distribution of air pollutants inside the city block was dominated by both traffic emissions and urban morphology, which explained about 70% of the total variance in spatial distribution of air pollutants. Excluding the contribution of emissions, over 50% of the total variance can still be explained by the urban morphology. Among these urban morphological factors, the key factors determining the spatial distribution of air pollution are "Distance from the road" (DR), "Building Coverage Ratio" (BCR) and "Aspect Ratio" (H/W) of the street canyon. Specifically, urban areas with lower Aspect Ratio, lower BCR and larger DR are less affected by traffic pollution. Compiling these individual factors, we developed a complex Urban Morphology Pollution Index (UMPI). Each unit increase in UMPI is associated with a one percent increase of nearby traffic pollution contribution. This index can help urban planners to semi-quantitatively evaluate building groups which tend to trap or ventilate traffic pollution and thus help to reduce human exposure to street canyon level pollution through either traffic emission control or urban morphology amelioration.
Applying Numerical Simulation to Identify the Suitable Block Scale for Improving Air Quality Inside Urban Streets

Abstract:Abstract Rapid urbanization-induced poor ventilation makes it difficult for urban built-up environments to breathe fresh air and purify pollutants. Meanwhile, vehicle exhaust is emitted into urban streets and spread to nearby residential neighborhoods, severely threatening both the environmental quality of street space and the well-being of citizens residing adjacent to the road. The numerical simulation validated by wind tunnel measurements was adopted to examine the effects of the block scale (i.e. street length) on natural ventilation and exhaust pollutant dispersion within urban street canyons. The findings are as follows: (1) the airflow regime inside the street canyon is determined by the interaction of a canyon vortex at the middle and corner eddies at the ends, leading to notably elevated pollutant concentrations on its leeward and mid-section than on its windward and laterals; (2) the induced corner vortices at street ends can drive ambient pollutants toward the middle of the street canyon and subsequently be carried out by the canyon vortex, however there is a limit to this effect, which varies depending on the length of the street canyon with constant aspect ratio; (3) a proper block scale (street length) ranging from 200 m to 400 m is recommended, which could be used to strike a favorable balance between environmentally improving urban street air quality and morphologically creating a vibrant public space. Numerical simulation-based design strategies can be utilized to optimize existing urban design guidelines for creating a desirable scale in practical urban planning and construction.

Abstract:<p>Given the complexity of urban wind flow, acceptable wind conditions can hardly be achieved in all regions within an urban area. In some regions, high wind speeds can lead to wind discomfort and danger, while some regions suffer from poor outdoor urban ventilation. In order to evaluate and improve urban wind conditions, the combined impacts of wind flow and morphological and aerodynamic characteristics of the urban area should be taken into account. In this perspective, performing extensive and time-consuming parametric analyses is required – which is very difficult – even impossible. This paper, therefore, presents an evolutionary-based framework to optimize building heights and plan area densities to improve wind conditions in complex real urban areas. The framework consists of four steps: (i) urban area identification, (ii) optimization algorithms, (iii) CFD simulations, and (iv) evaluation. The optimization consists of Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization. The framework is applied to a real urban area in the city of Tehran, Iran. The focus is on minimizing low-wind-speed regions. In total, 920 possible combinations of building height variations and plan area densities are assessed. 3D steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations are performed based on a detailed validation study and grid-sensitivity analysis. The results show that the use of this framework can effectively reduce computational time and significantly improve the wind conditions in the entire urban area. Urban planners, architects, and building engineers can benefit from this framework in the early stages of design for better wind conditions in complex real urban areas.</p>

Numerical Simulations of Air Flow and Traffic–Related Air Pollution Distribution in a Real Urban Area

Abstract:With increasing urbanization, urban air pollutants are becoming more and more relevant to human health. Here, combined with meteorological observation data, a numerical simulation of typical urban blocks in Shanghai was carried out to understand the spread of air pollutants caused by road traffic sources (ground–level and viaduct–level). Firstly, we analyzed the wind environment characteristics. Then, we quantitatively analyzed the pollutant distribution profiles and the contributions of two pollutant sources (PSV). Finally, we analyzed seven urban morphological parameters based on ventilation efficiency indices. Results revealed the following. (1) Ventilation patterns within the architectural complex are determined by local geometry; (2) Pollutants released at ground level were dominant when the Z–plane < 8 m high, and pollutants released from the viaduct source were 0.8–6.1% higher when the Z–plane ≥ 8 m high; (3) From ground level to a height of 60 m, the spatially–averaged normalized concentration (C*) tended to decrease gradually with distance from the source. C* increased irregularly with an increase in distance between 60 m and 86 m. Above 86 m, C* tended to increase linearly; (4) Vertical profiles of C* around buildings were building–specific, and their rate of change was inconsistent with height increases. In general, the correlations between C* and VRw, and between C* and KEturb were larger on the windward side of PSV upstream buildings than on the leeward side. Buildings downstream of the PSV showed the opposite situation; (5) At pedestrian level, the seven urban morphological parameters had no significant correlation with VRw, Cir*, and Czs*.

Abstract:Energy-efficient urban design is an important prerequisite to sustainable urban development and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This study proposes an automatic framework to optimize urban design through the use of an urban building energy model. Three optimization goals were defined: maximum solar energy utilization, solar lighting of the first floor, and minimum building energy demand. Urban morphology was integrated into the optimization process as the bridge between the urban design scenario and the actual urban block. To validate the model, this study abstracted basic urban forms from actual urban contexts to generate urban blocks with the Rhino tool and run optimization in the Wallacei X, for multi-objective optimization in Rhino. The long short-term memory (LSTM) network was applied to infer energy performance of 41 actual urban blocks in Jianhu, China. In the results, the proposed framework can be validated feasibly with optimization of 100 iterations. A set of optimal results will be achieved for three goals and five clusters defined for different concerns of urban design strategies. The LSTM can achieve the best accuracy of 1.21% and 1.37% for energy generation of photovoltaic and total building energy use intensity respectively.

Assessment of Ventilation Potential and Construction of Wind Corridors in Chengdu City Based on Multi-Source Data and Multi-Model Analysis

Abstract:The establishment of urban ventilation corridors (UVCs) aims to mitigate the urban heat island effect. While most studies focus on the construction and assessment of the environmental benefit of UVCs, they often overlook the analysis of UVCs' topological features. This research integrates multi-source data including 3D urban buildings, historical meteorological observations, high-resolution remote sensing, and land use planning, combined with multiple models, including geographic information system spatial analysis, circuit theory, and complex networks. Based on an assessment of urban ventilation potential, the circuit model was applied to extract UVCs aligned with the prevailing wind direction for both summer and winter seasons. Complex network modeling was employed to analyze the topological features of the ventilation network. From the analytical results, a multi-level wind corridor system for Chengdu was quantitatively developed. The results indicate that the city's overall ventilation resistance is high, with notable spatial clustering, and the southeastern region faces substantial ventilation obstructions. A total of 143 critical ventilation nodes were identified, with the number of air inlets and outlets in summer being significantly fewer than in winter. However, the cooling effect of ventilation corridors in the prevailing summer wind direction is superior to that in winter. The ventilation network comprises 16 communities with distinct ventilation characteristics, exhibiting moderate connectivity, lacking small-world properties, and showing congestion and instability.

Abstract:Urban surfaces exert profound influences on local wind patterns, turbulence dynamics, and the dispersion of air pollutants, underscoring the critical need for a thorough understanding of these processes in the realms of urban planning, design, construction, and air quality management. The advent of advanced computational capabilities has propelled the computational fluid dynamics model (CFD) into becoming a mature and widely adopted tool to investigate microscale meteorological phenomena in urban settings. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of CFD-based microscale meteorological simulations, offering insights into their applications, influential factors, and challenges. Significant variables such as the aspect ratio of street canyons, building geometries, ambient wind directions, atmospheric boundary layer stabilities, and street tree configurations play crucial roles in influencing microscale physical processes and the dispersion of air pollutants. The integration of CFD with mesoscale meteorological models and cutting-edge machine learning techniques empowers high-resolution, precise simulations of urban meteorology, establishing a robust scientific basis for sustainable urban development, the mitigation of air pollution, and emergency response planning for hazardous substances. Nonetheless, the broader application of CFD in this domain introduces challenges in grid optimization, enhancing integration with mesoscale models, addressing data limitations, and simulating diverse weather conditions.

Abstract:In the context of increasing global energy shortages and climate change, the human living environment, as a crucial component of residents' daily lives, has garnered growing attention from the academic community. Research on residential environments is vital for promoting the sustainable development of urban construction and constitutes an important aspect of sustainable development studies. This study focuses on the optimization strategy for the outdoor activity space wind environment in the Xihuayuan residential area in Lanzhou city, utilizing spatial syntax analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation technology. Firstly, the outdoor activity space is analyzed for visibility and spatial accessibility using DepthmapX0.6 software. Then, the outdoor wind environment in the residential area is simulated using PHOENICS 2018 software, and the analysis is conducted on outdoor spaces with a poor wind environment in terms of high accessibility. The results indicate that residents' outdoor comfort in these spaces is poor, highlighting the urgent need for improvement in the wind environment. This research attempts to optimize the wind environment in high-accessibility spaces within the residential area by improving building layout, orientation, and height. The simulation results after optimization demonstrate an increase in the overall average wind speed to 1.44 m/s, with the proportion of spaces with a good wind environment in high-accessibility areas during summer rising from 33.4% to 59.2%. The optimization strategy effectively improves the wind environment in high-accessibility areas of the residential area.
