Abstract:The depth-resolved luminescence of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) was studied in TiO2:Eu3+ microsphere using cathode luminescence. As the penetration depth of the electron beam into the microsphere was increased through the control of the accelerating voltage, periodic structures appeared superimposed over the intrinsic transition lines of Eu3+, which were attributable to the cavity enhancement effect of the spontaneous emission by WGM resonance. The calculated radial intensity distribution of the WGM and the penetration depth explained the observed dependence of the WGM structure's visibility on the accelerating voltage.
Parenchymal sparing surgery for central renal tumors in patients with hereditary renal cancers.

Abstract:PURPOSE Nephron sparing surgery has become accepted surgical practice for removing of renal tumors. The resection of central lesions has been thought to be more surgically challenging than that of peripheral tumors. We analyzed our experience with renal preservation surgery in patients with small hereditary central renal tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 1992 to 2000 we performed 116 partial nephrectomies with 44 kidneys (38%) demonstrating central renal masses. Central renal tumors were defined radiologically as those completely encircled by parenchyma or transgressing the interpapillary line on computerized tomography. We compared this group to a similar series of 67 patients with hereditary renal cancer with only peripheral based tumors. RESULTS Mean tumor size was 3.2 cm (range 1.5 to 7.5). Mean operative time was 352 minutes (range 70 to 830). Renal hypothermia and vascular clamping were used in 19 of 44 procedures (41%). Mean ischemic time was 55 minutes (range 16 to 143). Mean blood loss was 4.6 l (range 0.1 to 23). The complication rate was 23% (10 of 44 cases) and with 18% (8 of 44) directly related to surgical technique. The mean transfusion requirement was 6.7 U (range 0 to 32) and 12 of 44 procedures (27%) required no blood products. Mean preoperative and postoperative serum creatinine was 1.05 (range 0.6 to 1.8) and 1.08 mg/dl (range 0.6 to 2.1), respectively. Mean followup was 33.7 months. No metastasis developed during followup. CONCLUSIONS Central renal tumors are a common manifestation of hereditary renal cell carcinoma. There was no statistical difference found between common operative parameters when central and peripheral nephron sparing surgeries were compared. However, mean operative blood loss and transfusion requirements were increased in the central tumor group.
Factor‐VIII Activity and Antigen, Platelet Count and Biochemical Changes after Adrenoceptor Stimulation

Abstract:Adrenaline, isoprenaline and salbutamol were administered by intravenous infusion to human subjects. Isoprenaline was covered with practolol in an attempt to reduce the unpleasantness of the circulatory effects. Changes were recorded in pulse rate and blood pressure, and in blood levels of factors V, VIII, X, XI and XII, platelet count, lactate, pyruvate, potassium and free fatty acids. Factor VIII was studied by clotting assays, by reactions with two rabbit antisera and two human antibodies, and by desulphated agarose chromatography. At the rate at which they were administered, all three drugs increased the pulse rate by 20–40 beats/min. Factor VIII rose c. 2.5 x with adrenaline but only c. 1.5 x with isoprenaline and salbutamol; but other clotting factors did not alter. Chromatography provided no evidence of a change in the size of the molecule carrying factor‐VIII clotting activity. The rate of clearance of the heightened plasma activity could not be shown to differ from that of ‘ordinary’factor VIII infused into haemophiliacs. The platelet count rose after adrenaline, fell after salbutamol and did not change significantly after isoprenaline. Among the biochemical responses, the only significant difference between the drugs was that lactate rose after adrenaline and salbutamol but did not change after isoprenaline.

Abstract:Peanuts respond to fungal infection by synthesizing phytoalexins, most of which are antibiotic stilbenes. The mechanism and dynamics of phytoalexin formation in the peanut have not been studied. One of the most popular peanut cultivars in the southeastern United States, Georgia Green, was investigated for its ability to produce phytoalexins in response to infection by soil fungal strains. The experimental design allowed for study of phytoalexin production in peanut kernels layer-by-layer. The layers were dissected from different depths of the kernel starting from the infected area down to healthier tissues. Six peanut phytoalexins, trans-resveratrol, trans-arachidin-1, trans-arachidin-2, trans-arachidin-3, trans-3-isopentadienyl-4,3',5'-trihydroxystilbene, and SB-1, were detected in the kernel slices and quantitated. All of the fungal strains triggered phytoalexin production; however, the composition of phytoalexins varied significantly by layer. After incubation for 24 h, tissues remote from the infected area produced almost exclusively trans-resveratrol, whereas closer to the infected area tissues synthesized all six phytoalexins. In all of the experiments, after 48 h of fungal growth, deeper layers produced all tested phytoalexins. There was a significant difference in phytoalexin production elicited by some fungal isolates. No association was observed between phytoalexin production and toxigenic potential of fungal strains that elicited the production in mature peanut kernels.

Abstract:Iterative receivers, which perform MMSE detection and decoding iteratively, can provide significant performance improvement compared with noniterative method. However, due to the high computational cost and numerical instability, conventional MMSE detection using a priori information can not be implemented in hardware. In this letter, we propose a newly-built iterative receiver which is division-free and numerically stable, and then we analyze the results of a fixed-point simulation and present the hardware implementation architecture.

Abstract:The first step in a breeding program is the selection of strains with different useful characteristics. A few of the specific requirements of a good bakers' yeast generally recognized by commercial producers are: (1) Keeping quality. A good yeast does not autolyze nor lose viability excessively when held in a cake for a few days at room temperature. (2) Baking strength. A good yeast causes dough to rise quickly. (3) High yield. A good yeast transforms the maximum amount of nutrients in the fermentors into yeast in the shortest possible time. Different strains of bakers' yeast vary in these and other properties. The second step in a breeding program is the intensive inbreeding of each of the chosen strains. Successful inbreeding accomplishes two results: (1) it intensifies the desirable character, (2) it eliminates undesirable recessive genes and makes the breeding stock homozygous for the desirable traits. Some good breeding stocks do not give outward manifestations of their excellence because the inbreeding process which has intensified their vigor in one character may have reduced their vigor in other respects. The third step is the combination of the different desirable qualities of various stocks by hybridizing. The results of hybridizing are not predictable. One reason is that inbreeding operates at random in the selection of modifying genes. Another reason is that certain characters may be mutually exclusive. For example, it is possible that high yield may result from a physiological mechanism that reduces baking strength, and a given stock may not be able to excel in both characteristics. In the most favorable condition the hybrid may be superior to the two parents in the traits for which the parents were selected; in the most unfavorable condition the hybrid may be inferior to both parents in the respective traits. In yeasts, the hybrid can be propagated asexually. This means that the problem is simpler than in the higher plants such as maize, for in maize each generation is produced sexually and the maize hybrid deteriorates on propagation due to the segregation of the characters combined in the hybrid. In yeast propagation, sexual reproduction ordinarily occurs only under special conditions and it should be possible to maintain the hybrid combination indefinitely by asexual vegetative propagation.

Abstract:We present two new two-dimensional potential-energy surfaces for the SO-He system calculated at SO r distance frozen at its experimental minimum-energy distance. Both are obtained at the RCCSD(T) level using two different basis sets (AVTZ and AVQZ) for the three atoms. Bond functions are placed at mid-distance between the SO center of mass and He for a better description of the van der Waals well. Close-coupling calculations of the collisional excitation cross sections of the fine-structure levels of SO by He are calculated at low energies. The exact level splitting is taken into account. It is found that the results obtained from the two surfaces are very similar, except for some small differences observed in the region of resonances at low energies. The propensity rules between fine-structure levels are studied, it is shown that F-conserving cross sections are much larger for high-N rotational levels than cross sections between F-changing levels, as expected from theoretical considerations. The use of infinite order sudden recoupling techniques from spin-free cross sections is investigated. Excitation rate coefficients among fine-structure levels are calculated at low temperatures.
