Abstract:In the United States (U.S.), studies on nitrogen dioxide (NO2) trends and pollution-attributable health effects have historically used measurements from in situ monitors, which have limited geographical coverage and leave 66% of urban areas unmonitored. Novel tools, including remotely sensed NO2 measurements and estimates of NO2 estimates from land-use regression and photochemical models, can aid in assessing NO2 exposure gradients, leveraging their complete spatial coverage. Using these data sets, we find that Black, Hispanic, Asian, and multiracial populations experience NO2 levels 15-50% higher than the national average in 2019, whereas the non-Hispanic White population is consistently exposed to levels that are 5-15% lower than the national average. By contrast, the in situ monitoring network indicates more moderate ethnoracial NO2 disparities and different rankings of the least- to most-exposed ethnoracial population subgroup. Validating these spatially complete data sets against in situ observations reveals similar performance, indicating that all these data sets can be used to understand spatial variations in NO2. Integrating in situ monitoring, satellite data, statistical models, and photochemical models can provide a semiobservational record, complete geospatial coverage, and increasingly high spatial resolution, enhancing future efforts to characterize, map, and track exposure and inequality for highly spatially heterogeneous pollutants like NO2.
An intercomparison of satellite, airborne, and ground-level observations with WRF–CAMx simulations of NO2 columns over Houston, Texas, during the September 2021 TRACER-AQ campaign

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a precursor of ozone (O 3 ) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) – two pollutants that are above regulatory guidelines in many cities. Bringing urban areas into compliance of these regulatory standards motivates an understanding of the distribution and sources of NO 2 through observations and simulations. The TRACER-AQ campaign, conducted in Houston, Texas, in September 2021, provided a unique opportunity to compare observed NO 2 columns from ground-, airborne-, and satellite-based spectrometers. In this study, we investigate how these observational datasets compare and simulate column NO 2 using WRF–CAMx with fine resolution (444 × 444 m 2 ) comparable to the airborne column measurements. We compare WRF-simulated meteorology to ground-level monitors and find good agreement. We find that observations from the GEOstationary Coastal and Air Pollution Events (GEO-CAPE) Airborne Simulator (GCAS) instrument were strongly correlated ( r 2 = 0.79) to observations from Pandora spectrometers with a slight high bias (normalized mean bias (NMB) = 3.4 %). Remote sensing observations from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) were generally well correlated with Pandora observations ( r 2 = 0.73) with a negative bias (NMB = − 22.8 %). We intercompare different versions of TROPOMI data and find similar correlations across three versions but slightly different biases (from − 22.8 % in v2.4.0 to − 18.2 % in the NASA MINDS product). Compared with Pandora observations, the WRF–CAMx simulation had reduced correlation ( r 2 = 0.34) and a low bias ( − 21.2 %) over the entire study region. We find particularly poor agreement between simulated NO 2 columns and GCAS-observed NO 2 columns in downtown Houston, an area of high population and roadway densities. These findings point to a potential underestimate of NO x emissions (NO x = NO + NO 2 ) from sources associated with the urban core of Houston, such as mobile sources, in the WRF–CAMx simulation driven by the Texas state inventory, and further investigation is recommended.

Assessing Temporal and Spatial Patterns of Observed and Predicted Ozone in Multiple Urban Areas

Abstract:Background: Ambient monitoring data show spatial gradients in ozone (O3) across urban areas. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reductions will likely alter these gradients. Epidemiological studies often use exposure surrogates that may not fully account for the impacts of spatially and temporally changing concentrations on population exposure. Objectives: We examined the impact of large NOx decreases on spatial and temporal O3 patterns and the implications on exposure. Methods: We used a photochemical model to estimate O3 response to large NOx reductions. We derived time series of 2006-2008 O3 concentrations consistent with 50% and 75% NOx emissions reduction scenarios in three urban areas (Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Chicago) at each monitor location and spatially interpolated O3 to census-tract centroids. Results: We predicted that low O3 concentrations would increase and high O3 concentrations would decrease in response to NOx reductions within an urban area. O3 increases occurred across larger areas for the seasonal mean metric than for the regulatory metric (annual 4th highest daily 8-hr maximum) and were located only in urban core areas. O3 always decreased outside the urban core (e.g., at locations of maximum local ozone concentration) for both metrics and decreased within the urban core in some instances. NOx reductions led to more uniform spatial gradients and diurnal and seasonal patterns and caused seasonal peaks in midrange O3 concentrations to shift from midsummer to earlier in the year. Conclusions: These changes have implications for how O3 exposure may change in response to NOx reductions and are informative for the design of future epidemiology studies and risk assessments. Contributions of Local and Regional Sources of Nox to Ozone Concentrations in Southeast Texas

Abstract:The Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with a modified SAPRC-99 photochemical mechanism was used to investigate the contributions of local and upwind NOx sources to O-3 concentrations in Southeast Texas during the 2000 Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS 2000) from August 25 to September 5, 2000. Contributions from eight different local NO source types and eight different source regions to the 8-h average daytime O-3 concentrations from 1100 to 1800 CST (referred to as AD O-3 hereafter) are determined. Both diesel engines and highway gasoline vehicles account for 25 ppb of AD O-3 in the urban Houston area. NOx from natural gas combustion produces 35 ppb of AD O-3 in the industrial area of Houston. Contributions from industrial sources and coal combustion to AD O-3 have comparatively less broad spatial distribution with maximum values of 14 ppb and 20 ppb, respectively. Although the local sources are the most important sources, upwind sources have non-negligible influences (20-50%) on AD O-3 in the entire domain, with a maximum of 50 ppb in rural and coastal areas and 20 ppb in urban and industrial areas. To probe the origins of upwind sources contributions, NOx emissions in the entire eastern United States are divided into eight different regions and their contributions to O-3 concentrations in the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria (HGB) and Beaumont-Port Arthur (BPA) areas are determined. Among the various NOx source regions resolved in this study, other Texas counties near the HGB and BPA areas and southeastern states are the most important non-local sources of O-3. Under favorable transport conditions, emissions from neighbor states and northeastern states could also contribute to non-negligible O-3 concentrations (7-15%) in the HGB and BPA areas. This indicates that in addition to reduce local emissions, regional NOx emission controls, especially from the neighbor counties and states, are also necessary to improve O-3 air quality in Southeast Texas. Abstract:Air pollution contributes to a large fraction of the total mortality estimated under the global burden of disease project (GBD) of the World Health Organization (WHO). This paper discusses an integrated study to obtain the spatiotemporal characteristics of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and trace gases (O3, SO2, NO2, and CO) pollutants in Hangzhou City (China) for the years 2014–2016. Our detailed analysis shows a relationship between air pollutants and land-use/land-cover change. Air quality parameters (PM2.5 and PM10) and trace gases (SO2, NO2, and CO) show strong monthly variations in the months of January (higher values) and July (lower values). During monsoon and summer seasons, air quality and trace gases show low values, whereas ozone (O3) is higher in the summer and lower in the winter. The spatial distribution of air pollutants is retrieved using the kriging method at the monitoring sites in Hangzhou City. We have considered normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) from the Landsat 8 data. The correlation between air pollutants and land use at the street-town unit suggests that areas with low NDVI, high road density, large built-up density, and LST are consistent with high concentrations of particulate matter and SO2, NO2, and CO. Among the trace gases, NO2 is found to be the most sensitive element affected by land use patterns, and O3 shows weak correlation with land use. SO2 shows a strong positive correlation with road density and LST, whereas CO shows positive correlation with the built-up density, LST, and population density.
Examining air pollution exposure dynamics in disadvantaged communities through high-resolution mapping

Abstract:This study bridges gaps in air pollution research by examining exposure dynamics in disadvantaged communities. Using cutting-edge machine learning and massive data processing, we produced high-resolution (100 meters) daily air pollution maps for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and ozone (O3) across California for 2012-2019. Our findings revealed opposite spatial patterns of NO2 and PM2.5 to that of O3. We also identified consistent, higher pollutant exposure for disadvantaged communities from 2012 to 2019, although the most disadvantaged communities saw the largest NO2 and PM2.5 reductions and the advantaged neighborhoods experienced greatest rising O3 concentrations. Further, day-to-day exposure variations decreased for NO2 and O3. The disparity in NO2 exposure decreased, while it persisted for O3. In addition, PM2.5 showed increased day-to-day variations across all communities due to the increase in wildfire frequency and intensity, particularly affecting advantaged suburban and rural communities.
Racial isolation and exposure to airborne particulate matter and ozone in understudied US populations: Environmental justice applications of downscaled numerical model output

Abstract:Background: Researchers and policymakers are increasingly focused on combined exposures to social and environmental stressors, especially given how often these stressors tend to co-locate. Such exposures are equally relevant in urban and rural areas and may accrue disproportionately to particular communities or specific subpopulations. Objectives: To estimate relationships between racial isolation (RI), a measure of the extent to which minority racial/ethnic group members are exposed to only one another, and long-term particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5μ (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) levels in urban and nonurban areas of the eastern two-thirds of the US. Methods: Long-term (5year average) census tract-level PM2.5 and O3 concentrations were calculated using output from a downscaler model (2002-2006). The downscaler uses a linear regression with additive and multiplicative bias coefficients to relate ambient monitoring data with gridded output from the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. A local, spatial measure of RI was calculated at the tract level, and tracts were classified by urbanicity, RI, and geographic region. We examined differences in estimated pollutant exposures by RI, urbanicity, and demographic subgroup (e.g., race/ethnicity, education, socioeconomic status, age), and used linear models to estimate associations between RI and air pollution levels in urban, suburban, and rural tracts. Results: High RI tracts (≥80th percentile) had higher average PM2.5 levels in each category of urbanicity compared to low RI tracts (<20th percentile), with the exception of the rural West. Patterns in O3 levels by urbanicity and RI differed by region. Linear models indicated that PM2.5 concentrations were significantly and positively associated with RI. The largest association between PM2.5 and RI was observed in the rural Midwest, where a one quintile increase in RI was associated with a 0.90μg/m(3) (95% confidence interval: 0.83, 0.99μg/m(3)) increase in PM2.5 concentration. Associations between O3 and RI in the Northeast, Midwest and West were positive and highest in suburban and rural tracts, even after controlling for potential confounders such as percentage in poverty. Conclusion: RI is associated with higher 5year estimated PM2.5 concentrations in urban, suburban, and rural census tracts, adding to evidence that segregation is broadly associated with disparate air pollution exposures. Disproportionate burdens to adverse exposures such as air pollution may be a pathway to racial/ethnic disparities in health.
Overview of surface measurements and spatial characterization of submicrometer particulate matter during the DISCOVER-AQ 2013 campaign in Houston, TX

Abstract:The sources of submicrometer particulate matter (PM1) remain poorly characterized in the industrialized city of Houston, TX. A mobile sampling approach was used to characterize PM1 composition and concentration across Houston based on high-time-resolution measurements of nonrefractory PM1 and trace gases during the DISCOVER-AQ Texas 2013 campaign. Two pollution zones with marked differences in PM1 levels, character, and dynamics were established based on cluster analysis of organic aerosol mass loadings sampled at 16 sites. The highest PM1 mass concentrations (average 11.6 ± 5.7 µg/m3) were observed to the northwest of Houston (zone 1), dominated by secondary organic aerosol (SOA) mass likely driven by nighttime biogenic organonitrate formation. Zone 2, an industrial/urban area south/east of Houston, exhibited lower concentrations of PM1 (average 4.4 ± 3.3 µg/m3), significant organic aerosol (OA) aging, and evidence of primary sulfate emissions. Diurnal patterns and backward-trajectory analyses enable the classification of airmass clusters characterized by distinct PM sources: biogenic SOA, photochemical aged SOA, and primary sulfate emissions from the Houston Ship Channel. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicates that secondary biogenic organonitrates primarily related with monoterpenes are predominant in zone 1 (accounting for 34% of the variability in the data set). The relevance of photochemical processes and industrial and traffic emission sources in zone 2 also is highlighted by PCA, which identifies three factors related with these processes/sources (~50% of the aerosol/trace gas concentration variability). PCA reveals a relatively minor contribution of isoprene to SOA formation in zone 1 and the absence of isoprene-derived aerosol in zone 2. The relevance of industrial amine emissions and the likely contribution of chloride-displaced sea salt aerosol to the observed variability in pollution levels in zone 2 also are captured by PCA. Implications: This article describes an urban-scale mobile study to characterize spatial variations in submicrometer particulate matter (PM1) in greater Houston. The data set indicates substantial spatial variations in PM1 sources/chemistry and elucidates the importance of photochemistry and nighttime oxidant chemistry in producing secondary PM1. These results emphasize the potential benefits of effective control strategies throughout the region, not only to reduce primary emissions of PM1 from automobiles and industry but also to reduce the emissions of important secondary PM1 precursors, including sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds. Such efforts also could aid in efforts to reduce mixing ratios of ozone.

Abstract:Rising surface ozone (O 3 ) levels in China are increasingly emphasizing the potential threats to public health, ecological balance, and economic sustainability. Using a 1 km × 1 km dataset of O 3 concentrations, this research employs subpopulation demographic data combined with a population-weighted quality model. Its aim is to evaluate quantitatively the differences in O 3 exposure among various subpopulations within China, both at a provincial and urban cluster level. Additionally, an exposure disparity indicator was devised to establish unambiguous exposure risks among significant urban agglomerations at varying O 3 concentration levels. The findings reveal that as of 2018, the population-weighted average concentration of O 3 for all subgroups has experienced a significant uptick, surpassing the average O 3 concentration (118 μg/m 3 ). Notably, the middle-aged demographic exhibited the highest O 3 exposure level at 135.7 μg/m 3 , which is significantly elevated compared to other age brackets. Concurrently, there exists a prominent positive correlation between educational attainment and O 3 exposure levels, with the medium-income bracket showing the greatest susceptibility to O 3 exposure risks. From an industrial vantage point, the secondary sector demographic is the most adversely impacted by O 3 exposure. In terms of urban–rural structure, urban groups in all regions had higher levels of exposure to O 3 than rural areas, with North and East China having the most significant levels of exposure. These findings not only emphasize the intricate interplay between public health and environmental justice but further highlight the indispensability of segmented subgroup strategies in environmental health risk assessment. Moreover, this research furnishes invaluable scientific groundwork for crafting targeted public health interventions and sustainable air quality management policies.

Abstract:South America is underrepresented in research on air pollution exposure disparities by sociodemographic factors, although such disparities have been observed in other parts of the world. We investigated whether exposure to and information about air pollution differs by sociodemographic factors in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the second most populous city in Brazil with dense urban areas, for 2012–2017. We developed machine learning-based models to estimate daily levels of O 3 , PM 10 , and PM 2.5 using high-dimensional datasets from satellite remote sensing, atmospheric and land variables, and land use information. Cross-validations demonstrated good agreement between the estimated levels and measurements from ground-based monitoring stations: overall R 2 of 76.8 %, 63.9 %, and 69.1 % for O 3 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 , respectively. We conducted univariate regression analyses to investigate whether long-term exposure to O 3 , PM 2.5 , PM 10 and distance to regulatory monitors differs by socioeconomic indicators, the percentages of residents who were children (0-17 years) or age 65+ years in 154 neighborhoods. We also examined the number of days exceeding the Brazilian National Air Quality Standard (BNAQS). Long-term exposures to O 3 and PM 2.5 were higher in more socially deprived neighborhoods. An interquartile range (IQR) increment of the social development index (SDI) was associated with a 3.6μg/m 3 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 2.9, 4.4; p-value≤0.001) decrease in O 3 , and 0.3μg/m 3 (95 % CI: 0.2, 0.5; p-value = 0.010) decrease in PM 2.5 . An IQR increase in the percentage of residents who are children was associated with a 4.1μg/m 3 (95 % CI: 3.1, 5.0; p-value≤0.001) increase in O 3 , and 0.4μg/m 3 (95 % CI: 0.3, 0.6; p-value = 0.009) increase in PM 2.5 . An IQR increase in the percentage of residents age ≥65was associated with a 3.3μg/m 3 (95 % CI: 2.4, 4.3; p-value=<0.001) decrease in O 3 , and 0.3μg/m 3 (95 % CI: 0.1, 0.5; p-value = 0.058) decrease in PM 2.5 . There were no apparent associations for PM 10 . The association for daily O 3 levels exceeding the BNAQS daily standard was 0.4 %p–0.8 %p different by the IQR of variables, indicating a 7–15 days difference in the six-year period. The association for daily PM 2.5 levels exceeding the BNAQS daily standard showed a 0.7–1.5 %p difference by the IQR, meaning a 13–27 days difference in the period. We did not find statistically significant associations between the distance to monitors and neighborhood characteristics but some indication regarding SDI. We found that O 3 levels were higher in neighborhoods situated farther from monitoring stations, suggesting that elevated levels of air pollution may not be routinely measured. Exposure disparity patterns may vary by pollutants, suggesting a complex interplay between environmental and socioeconomic factors in environmental justice.

Abstract:Understanding the local-scale spatial and temporal variability of ozone formation is crucial for effective mitigation. We combine tropospheric vertical column densities (VCDTrop) of formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), referred to as HCHO-VCDTrop and NO2-VCDTrop, retrieved from airborne remote sensing and the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) with ground-based measurements to investigate changes in ozone precursors and the inferred chemical production regime on high-ozone days in May-August 2018 over two Northeast urban domains. Over New York City (NYC) and Baltimore/Washington D.C. (BAL/DC), HCHO-VCDTrop increases across the domain, but higher NO2-VCDTrop occurs mainly in urban centers on ozone exceedance days (when maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) ozone exceeds 70 ppb at any monitor in the region). The ratio of HCHO-VCDTrop to NO2-VCDTrop, proposed as an indicator of the sensitivity of local surface ozone production rates to its precursors, generally increases on ozone exceedance days, implying a transition toward a more NOx-sensitive ozone production regime that should lead to higher efficacy of NOx controls on the highest ozone days in NYC and BAL/DC. Warmer temperatures and enhanced influence from emissions in the local boundary layer on the high-ozone days are accompanied by slower wind speeds in BAL/DC but stronger, southwesterly winds in NYC.
Emission Ratios and Diurnal Variability of Volatile Organic Compounds and Influence of Industrial Emissions in Two Texas Cities

Abstract:Changing urban emission landscapes and increasing population make it imperative to understand the driving forces for air quality in growing urban areas. Recent field studies in an industrial area in Houston and a semiurban area in San Antonio reveal unique emission signatures for these two growing Texas cities. A comparison of benzene, toluene, xylenes, isoprene, and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) was conducted for these two Texas locations and previous studies in other megacities. It was found that San Antonio had similar emission ratios as these megacities for benzene, toluene, and xylenes (1.10, 4.57, and 3.60 pptv ppbv−1 of CO, respectively), likely indicating a similar traffic emission source. Isoprene and MEK were of biogenic origin in San Antonio. However, analysis of emission ratios, diurnal trends, and comparison with emission inventories indicated that benzene, toluene, and MEK were likely associated with fugitive and stack emissions in the industrial corridor in Houston. Isoprene in Houston appeared to have mixed fugitive and biogenic sources in Houston, based on diurnal trends and emission ratio. The peak nighttime concentrations for benzene, toluene, xylene, isoprene, and MEK observed during the campaign were 66, 533, 21, 138, and 731 ppbv, respectively, in the Houston site. The emission ratio for xylenes (3.37 pptv ppbv−1 of CO) for the Houston site was similar to Paris, London, and Mexico City, despite emission inventories indicating high fugitive and stack emissions. The conditional probability function (CPF) analysis closely matched the direction of the industrial sources with the highest recorded emission levels as listed in the emission inventory for the Houston site. The estimated ozone production efficiency (OPE) for the industrial area in Houston indicated volatile organic compound (VOC)–limited conditions in the morning, which transitioned to nitrogen oxide (NOx)–limited conditions in the afternoon. Texas cities have complex emission scenarios, and future efforts to mitigate ozone and particulate matter may have to consider a variety of emission reduction strategies.

Impact of Heatwaves and Declining NOx on Nocturnal Monoterpene Oxidation in the Urban Southeastern United States

Abstract:Abstract Nighttime oxidation of monoterpenes (MT) via the nitrate radical (NO 3 ) and ozone (O 3 ) contributes to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). This study uses observations in Atlanta, Georgia from 2011 to 2022 to quantify trends in nighttime production of NO 3 (PNO 3 ) and O 3 concentrations and compare to model outputs from the EPA's Air QUAlity TimE Series Project (EQUATES). We present urban‐suburban gradients in nighttime NO 3 and O 3 concentrations and quantify their fractional importance (F) for MT oxidation. Both observations and EQUATES show a decline in PNO 3 , with modeled PNO 3 declining faster than observations. Despite decreasing PNO 3 , we find that NO 3 continues to dominate nocturnal boundary layer (NBL) MT oxidation (F NO3 = 60%) in 2017, 2021, and 2022, which is consistent with EQUATES (F NO3 = 80%) from 2013 to 2019. This contrasts an anticipated decline in F NO3 based on prior observations in the nighttime residual layer, where O 3 is the dominant oxidant. Using two case studies of heatwaves in summer 2022, we show that extreme heat events can increase NO 3 concentrations and F NO3 , leading to short MT lifetimes (<1 hr) and high gas‐phase organic nitrate production. Regardless of the presence of heatwaves, our findings suggest sustained organic nitrate aerosol formation in the urban SE US under declining NO x emissions, and highlight the need for improved representation of extreme heat events in chemistry‐transport models and additional observations along urban to rural gradients.

Abstract:The Houston‐Galveston‐Brazoria urban area contains industrial petrochemical sources that emit volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides, resulting in rapid and efficient ozone production downwind. During September to October 2006, the NOAA WP‐3D aircraft conducted research flights as part of the second Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS II). We use measurements of NO x , SO 2 , and speciated hydrocarbons from industrial sources in Houston to derive source emission ratios and compare these to emission inventories and the first Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS) in 2000. Between 2000 and 2006, NO x /CO 2 emission ratios changed by an average of −29% ± 20%, while a significant trend in SO 2 /CO 2 emission ratios was not observed. We find that high hydrocarbon emissions are routine for the isolated petrochemical facilities. Ethene (C 2 H 4 ) and propene (C 3 H 6 ) are the major contributors to ozone formation based on calculations of OH reactivity for organic species including C 2 –C 10 alkanes, C 2 –C 5 alkenes, ethyne, and C 2 –C 5 aldehydes and ketones. Measured ratios of C 2 H 4 /NO x and C 3 H 6 /NO x exceed emission inventory values by factors of 1.4–20 and 1–24, respectively. We examine trends in C 2 H 4 /NO x and C 3 H 6 /NO x ratios between 2000 and 2006 for the isolated petrochemical sources and estimate a change of −30% ± 30%, with significant day‐to‐day and within‐plume variability. Median ambient mixing ratios of ethene and propene in Houston show decreases of −52% and −48%, respectively, between 2000 and 2006. The formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and peroxyacetyl nitrate products produced by alkene oxidation are observed downwind, and their time evolution is consistent with the rapid photochemistry that also produces ozone.
A Comparative Study of O3 Formation in the Houston Urban and Industrial Plumes During the 2000 Texas Air Quality Study

Abstract:Ozone formation in the Houston area during a period of high ozone concentrations that occurred on 29 August 2000 during the TexAQS 2000 study is examined to understand differences in the sources of O3 precursors and the rate and efficiency of ozone formation over the city of Houston and the industrialized Ship Channel region to the east of Houston. From late morning through late afternoon on 29 August, a period of stagnation occurred, allowing accumulation of O3 and product species separately over downtown Houston and the Houston Ship Channel. Three aircraft flights were made in the region, starting from about 0900 CST and extending to about 1700 CST. A localized plume of high O3 ranging between 120 and 200 ppb was observed over the Ship Channel on all of these aircraft flights. Over the same time period, O3 concentrations over the city were much lower ranging between 40 and 90 ppb. NOx concentrations measured in the two regions in the late morning were roughly the same, but hydrocarbon reactivities over the industrial area were much higher, by as much as a factor of 10. Photochemical box model calculations constrained by observations of NOx, hydrocarbons, O3, and other stable species indicated that the instantaneous ozone formation rate was much lower (3–18 ppb/h) over downtown Houston than it was over the Ship Channel (3–80 ppb/h). The much faster O3 formation rates and higher concentrations observed over the Ship Channel are attributed to the much higher hydrocarbon reactivity, the majority of which was contributed by low molecular weight alkenes. These high hydrocarbon reactivities also caused O3 over the Ship Channel to be produced with much higher efficiency than over urban Houston. Comparison of photochemical product distributions suggests that O3 formation in the urban area is much more hydrocarbon limited than in the Ship Channel, consistent with the geographic distribution of major hydrocarbon sources in the area.

Abstract:This study estimated long-term average ambient NO 2 concentrations using TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) tropospheric NO 2 data and land use information at the spatial resolution of 500 m in California for the years 2018–2019. Our satellite-land use regression model demonstrated reasonably high predictive power with cross-validation (CV) R 2 = 0.76, mean absolute error (MAE) = 1.95 ppb, and root mean squared error (RMSE) = 2.51 ppb in a comparison between measured and estimated NO 2 concentrations. Exploiting the high-resolution NO 2 estimates, we further investigated the representativeness of ground NO 2 monitors for population exposures and examined the spatial variation of NO 2 in relation to parcel-level property data for exposure attributions. The ground NO 2 monitors were the most representative of population exposures in Los Angeles and San Diego counties, supported by population-weighted average NO 2 concentrations (satellite-derived estimations) similar to arithmetic average NO 2 concentrations (ground measurements). On the contrary, the exposure assessment using the ground monitors was the least representative and protective in Humboldt, San Luis Obispo, and Yolo counties with population-weighted average NO 2 greater than arithmetic average NO 2 by 82.2 % (1.85 ppb), 67.1 % (1.89 ppb), and 58.2 % (2.48 ppb), respectively. In a case study of LA County, we identified comparatively high NO 2 concentrations for the property types of food processing facilities and high-density residential complexes (such as high-rise apartments and apartments). This finding provides evidence that these emerging sources may be crucial to mitigate cumulative NO 2 exposures and subsequent health risks from a regulatory perspective.

Abstract:High emissions of NOx and anthropogenic VOCs from urban areas are a major source of tropospheric ozone production. Tropospheric ozone is a secondary air pollutant that is harmful to human health as well as crop and ecosystem productivity, and an important greenhouse gas. It is formed from the chemical processing of NOx and VOCs in a non-linear cycle, making ozone reduction strategies challenging. Urban centres across the world are developing at different rates and emitting different combinations and concentrations of chemical species, resulting in location specific drivers of urban ozone concentrations. Alongside this, different countries and cities have implemented a wide range of location specific air quality and climate change measures to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The diversity of these policies over the past few decades has further led to different outcomes for secondary pollutant formation across the globe.As part of TOAR-II, the Urban Ozone Working Group explores the long-term trends in urban ozone concentrations over the past 20 years on a global scale. Using ground based data from global Air Quality networks, trends in ozone concentrations of > 12 cities across different continents are presented, and temporal changes in ozone trends are identified. This study utilises the TOAR database, accessed via the TOAR Data Portal, which collects hourly data of long-term surface air quality measurements from over 10,000 stations globally. Where sufficient long-term NOx and VOC data are available, ozone concentration trends are compared to trends in its precursor species. Trends in ozone concentrations are then related to the state of development of the city using factors such as GDP and the UN City Development Index, and an assessment of how cities in different phases of development are contributing to tropospheric ozone across the world is discussed. Trends in ozone will also be compared to country and city specific changes in air quality and net zero policy interventions.
Narrowing Differences in Urban and Nonurban Surface Ozone in the Northern Hemisphere Over 1990–2020

Abstract:Surface ozone air pollution is unequally distributed in space and varies over urban and surrounding nonurban areas. Traditionally, urban ozone levels tend to be lower than their nonurban counterparts, resulting from discrepancies in emissions and nonlinearity in photochemistry. However, how the differences in urban vs nonurban ozone evolve over the past decades is uncertain. Here, we construct 6361 pairs of urban and nonurban ozone measurement sites based on available surface monitoring networks to analyze the long-term changes of their ozone differences. We show that urban vs nonurban ozone differences have narrowed substantially in North America, Europe, South Korea, and Japan over the summers of 1990–2020. The hemispheric mean urban vs nonurban ozone differences have decreased by 90% from −5.0 ppbv in the 1990s to −0.5 ppbv in the 2010s. We estimate that the anthropogenic emission reduction of nitrogen oxides is the dominant driver of the narrowing trends. It has suppressed the urban ozone titration and led to closer ozone formation regimes over urban and nonurban areas.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution remains a serious global problem, particularly near highly populated urbanized coasts that face increasing challenges with climate change. Yet, the combined impact of urban emissions, pollution transport, and complex meteorology on the spatiotemporal dynamics of NO2 along heterogeneous urban coastlines remains poorly characterized. Here, we integrated measurements from different platforms - boats, ground-based networks, aircraft, and satellites - to characterize total column NO2 (TCNO2) dynamics across the land-water continuum in the New York metropolitan area, the most populous area in the United States that often experiences the highest national NO2 levels. Measurements were conducted during the 2018 Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS), with a main goal to extend surface measurements beyond the coastline - where ground-based air-quality monitoring networks abruptly stop - and over the aquatic environment where peaks in air pollution often occur. Satellite TCNO2 from TROPOMI correlated strongly with Pandora surface measurements (r = 0.87, N = 100) both over land and water. Yet, TROPOMI overall underestimated TCNO2 (MPD = -12%) and missed peaks in NO2 pollution caused by rush hour emissions or pollution accumulation during sea breezes. Aircraft retrievals were in excellent agreement with Pandora (r = 0.95, MPD = -0.3%, N = 108). Stronger agreement was found between TROPOMI, aircraft, and Pandora over land, while over water satellite, and to a lesser extent aircraft, retrievals underestimated TCNO2 particularly in the highly dynamic New York Harbor environment. Combined with model simulations, our shipborne measurements uniquely captured rapid transitions and fine-scale features in NO2 behavior across the New York City - Long Island Sound land-water continuum, driven by the complex interplay of human activity, chemistry, and local scale meteorology. These novel datasets provide critical information for improving satellite retrievals, enhancing air quality models, and informing management decisions, with important implications for the health of diverse communities and vulnerable ecosystems along this complex urban coastline.
