Abstract:Background: Although bronchodilators and glucocorticoids can reduce the symptoms of cough and asthma to a certain extent, the adverse drug reactions and recurrence after recovery still trouble clinicians. Acupoint catgut embedding is effective in preventing and treating acute recurrence and deterioration of COPD, but its clinical efficacy remains controversial. Therefore, this study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of acupoint catgut embedding combined with conventional Western medicine for COPD through meta-analysis. Methods: Pubmed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Sinomed, China Knowledge Network, VIP, and Wanfang databases were searched, with a time frame from database creation to November 2022. Meta-analysis was performed with Revman 5.3. Publication bias was assessed by Stata 15.0. Results: Seventeen studies were listed, with a total sample size of 1516 cases. Meta-analysis showed that compared with conventional western medicine, acupoint catgut embedding combined with conventional western medicine could effectively improve the total effective rate of clinical symptoms of stable COPD [RR = 1.21, 95%CI (1.13, 1.29), P < .00001], forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) [mean difference (MD) = 0.04, 95%CI (0.00, 0.09), P = .04],the percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 second predicted value [MD = 1.13, 95%CI (0.38,1.88), P = .003], acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [MD = -0.73, 95%CI (-1.04, -0.42), P < .00001], COPD assessment test score [MD = -2.39, 95%CI (-3.65, -1.13), P = .0002], the improved medical research council respiratory questionnaire score (mMRC score) [MD = -0.15, 95%CI (-0.29, -0.02),P = .03], 6-minute walk distance [MD = 28.16, 95%CI (17.31, 39.00), P < .00001], the production of inflammatory factor interleukin-8 [MD = -9.65, 95%CI (-10.44, -8.86), P < .00001], but the adverse event rate was comparable[RR = 1.39, 95%CI (0.28,6.91), P = .69]. However, there was no significant difference in forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity and TNF-α between the acupoint catgut embedding combined group and the conventional western medication group. Harbord test showed no significant publication bias. Conclusion: The clinical efficacy of acupoint catgut embedding combined with conventional western medicine for stable COPD is better than that of conventional western medicine, and the safety may be equivalent to that of conventional western medicine, which has the value of further research exploration.

Abstract:In their pioneering paper [1] Stambaugh et al developed the Peng-Hicks concept [2] of a fusion reactor based on a solid copper centre-post Spherical Tokamak (ST). Using the promising results from the START experiment [3], they produced a vision for a path to Fusion Power. This path had two elements: the ability to produce high fusion gain from an ST, and equally importantly, the ability to demonstrate this in a small (and therefore low cost) pilot plant device. In this paper we review various attempts to pursue this vision, and try to elucidate why success has not yet been achieved. However we show that the advent of high temperature superconductors (HTS) may overcome some of the problems, and we suggest a revised version of the small, low entry cost route to Fusion Power.

Abstract:Using iterative algorithms to reconstruct quantitative 3D PET data requires the computation of the system probability matrix. The pure geometrical contribution to the matrix elements can easily be approximated by the length of intersection between detected lines of response (LOR) and individual voxels. However, the natural observables are volume-based, i.e. the coincidence rates which are usually detected in tubes of response (TOR) as well as the activity concentration in each voxel refer to specific spatial fragments. Therefore, we developed a fast method for the analytical calculation of the 3D shape and volume of intersection polyhedrons to build the system matrix with an improved description of the geometrical detection probability. Additionally, we considered effects of detector blurring within the system matrix. Gaussian resolution functions have been assumed in the radial and axial direction describing migrations between adjacent TORs. Finally, exploiting intrinsic symmetry relations and the sparseness of the system matrix allowed to create an efficiently small matrix representation which could be pre-computed and completely stored in memory. Time-consuming voxel addressing calculations due to necessary symmetry operations have been completely avoided by using an octant-wise symmetrically ordered field of voxels. The above algorithm has been applied for an iterative, fully 3D reconstruction (MLEM/OSEM) of pre-corrected 3D sinograms provided by a Siemens/CTI HR+PET scanner. A comparison about the results with other established reconstruction platforms is given where our analytical volume-based approach yields a superior contrast behaviour at a lower level of noise.
The impact of massage and dry cupping on dysrhythmia in cardiac patients: A randomized parallel controlled trial

Abstract:Background: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in many countries around the world and is linked to numerous complications. In addition to conventional pharmacological treatments, complementary and alternative medicines like massage and dry cupping are employed to help manage the disease and its symptoms. This study aimed to compare the effects of massage and dry cupping on dysrhythmia in patients with heart diseases. Methods: This randomized parallel controlled clinical trial study was conducted in two critical care units of Shafa hospital in Kerman, southeastern Iran, in 2019-2020. A total of 90 eligible patients were allocated into three groups: massage (n = 30), dry cupping (n = 30), and control (n = 30) using a stratified block randomization method. In the massage group, the head and face were massaged for three consecutive nights, while the dry cupping group received dry cupping between the fifth cervical vertebra and the second thoracic vertebra for the same duration. Each intervention session lasted 15 min. Data collection tools included a socio-demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire, a form for hemodynamic parameters (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation), and a form for assessing dysrhythmia using electrocardiogram readings. Dysrhythmia in the participants was evaluated after each session. Results: The results within each group indicated a statistically significant difference in the prevalence of dysrhythmia in the dry cupping group after the intervention (P < 0.05), but this difference was not statistically significant in the massage and control groups. However, when comparing between the groups, no significant difference was found among the three groups. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the type of dysrhythmia between the groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: While there was no difference in the type of dysrhythmia between the three groups, the additional reduction of dysrhythmia in the dry cupping group could hold clinical significance. Further studies are recommended to validate or refute the findings of the present study.

Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>and purpose: We investigated the effectiveness of cupping therapy with three different pressures in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Materials and methods</h3><p>The participants were randomly assigned to three groups, as follows: cupping pressure of −0.02 mpa (n = 38), −0.03 mpa (n = 38), or −0.05 mpa (n = 36). Each group received cupping treatment that consisted of 10 sessions over 5 weeks (2 sessions per week). The primary outcomes were Fatigue Scale (FS-14) score and Fatigue Assessment Instrument (FAI) score after 5 and 10 sessions. The secondary outcomes were the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) score, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) score, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>There were 91 participants who completed the trial. After five sessions of treatment, the primary outcome of FS-14 score decreased by 3.20 (2.19, 4.21) in the −0.02 mpa group, by 2.39 (1.51, 3.27) in the −0.03 mpa group, and by 3.40 (2.28, 4.52) in the −0.05 mpa group (<em>P</em> = 0.667). After 10 sessions of treatment, the outcome of FS-14 score decreased by 5.00 (3.79, 6.21) in the −0.02 mpa group, by 4.06 (3.07, 5.05) in the −0.03 mpa group, and by 4.77 (3.52, 5.94) in the −0.05 mpa group (<em>P</em> = 0.929). And, the results were statistically different between 5 sessions and 10 sessions of treatment (<em>P</em> < 0.01). However, there were no statistical differences in FAI, SAS, SDS, and PSQI scores between the three groups after 5 sessions and 10 sessions of treatment.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>In conclusion, cupping therapy has significantly relieved fatigue symptoms and improved emotion and sleep condition of CFS patients, and 10 sessions of treatment had superior results compared with 5 sessions in each group. Moreover, in 5 sessions of treatment, cupping with high pressure showed better improvement in fatigue syndromes and sleep condition according to effective rates.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Trial registration</h3><p>Chinese clinical trial registry (ChiCTR1800017590); Ethical approval number: ChiECRCT-20180085.</p>

Abstract:Background: According to the international diabetes federation, 629 million adults will suffer from diabetes by 2045. Wet cupping therapy is a combination of bleeding and dry cupping and has been used in traditional medicine as a complementary therapy for diabetes. Limonene was shown to have both antioxidant and antidiabetic activity but its potential alongside other treatments has not been thoroughly explored. Objectives: Although wet-cupping therapy is widely used under different conditions, its potential in the treatment of diabetes is not well-examined. Methods: Male Wistar rats were then injected with alloxan and nicotinamide to induce diabetes. After cupping, the rats' serum nitric oxide, creatinine, SGPT, SGOT, cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, GPX, urea, and HDL levels were determined. The glutathione, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde, and protein level of the serum, renal, and liver were then measured. Results: The results showed a significant differences in serum glucose levels among the diabetic rats receiving wet cupping and limonene, in serum glutathione levels in diabetic rats receiving limonene or limonene and wet cupping compared to the diabetic rats, in liver GSH levels in control rats receiving limonene and wet cupping, in the liver GPX activity in control rats receiving limonene, and in liver catalase activity in control rats receiving limonene and wet cupping compared to control group. There was no significant change in serum NO, protein, creatinine, SGPT, SGOT, cholesterol, triglyceride MDA, urea, catalase, HDL, renal GSH, MDA, catalase, liver protein, and MDA Level. Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggested that a combination of limonene and wet cupping therapy could be presented as an agent to lower elevated blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. Further clinical studies are required to confirm the findings.

Abstract:Background and aims: Patients with asthma suffer from dyspnea, cough, wheeze in their daily life and this may be by stress and anxiety. Massage may promote relaxation and relieve symptom. Thus, it is appropriate to explore the effectiveness of massage on symptom in patients with asthma. Methods: This study was a randomized-controlled trial that was performed in the Immunology and Allergy Clinics of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Iran. 60 children with allergic asthma of 6–12 year–old were invited to participate in this study; only 58 of them agreed. They were divided into two groups at random. Subjects in the massage therapy group received a 30 minute massage therapy by their parents at home before bedtime every night for 4 weeks in addition to the standard asthma treatment. The control group received the standard asthma treatment alone for 4 weeks. Both groups were given a diary notes to monitor symptoms. Results: The results of this study showed that symptom Scores in massage group were improved significantly compared with control group, and the rate of dyspnea, cough and wheeze in the experimental group than the control group were reduced by approximately 45%, 56% and 52%. Conclusion: The findings suggest that massage might reduce anxiety in patient with asthma and may have a beneficial effect on symptoms of asthma, such as dyspnea, cough, and wheeze. Therefore can be used as a nursing education for parents to improve dyspnea in children with asthma.

Abstract:Abstract Background: The program aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of cupping in patients with chronic urticaria (CU). Methods: We will search the databases including PubMed, Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, China Science Journal Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan-fang Database, and China Biomedical Literature Database from their inception to May 2019. In addition, we will manually search the list of medical journals as a supplement. The clinical randomized controlled trials or quasi-randomized controlled trials related to cupping for the treatment of CU will be included in the study. Data were synthesized by using a fixed-effect model or random effect model depend on the heterogeneity test. The primary outcome is the total effective rate. Secondary outcomes include skin disease quality of life index scores, adverse events, and recurrence rates. RevMan V.5.3 statistical software will be used for meta-analysis. If it is not appropriate for a meta-analysis, then a descriptive analysis will be conducted. Data synthesis will use the risk ratio and the standardized or weighted average difference of continuous data to represent the results. Results: This study will provide a comprehensive review of the available evidence to assess the effectiveness and safety of cupping for patients with CU. Conclusion: This systematic review (SR) will provide evidence to judge whether cupping is an effective intervention for patients with CU. Ethics and dissemination: The protocol of the SR does not require ethical approval because it does not involve humans. Abstract:Background As one of the most common musculoskeletal ailments, chronic nonspecific low-back pain (CNLBP) causes persistent disability and substantial medical expenses. Epidemiological evidence shows that the incidence rate of CNLBP in young and middle-aged people who are demanded rapidly recovery and social contribution is rising. Recent guidelines indicate a reduced role for medicines in the management of CNLBP. Objective The present study investigates the short-term effects of cupping and scraping therapy using a medicated balm, compared to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with a capsaicin plaster, in the treatment of CNLBP. Design, setting, participants and interventions: We designed a prospective multicenter randomized clinical trial enrolling patients from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. A total of 156 patients with CNLBP were randomized into two parallel groups. Diclofenac sodium-sustained release tablets were administered orally to participants in the control group for one week while a capsaicin plaster was applied externally. Patients in the test group were treated with cupping and scraping using a medical device and medicated balm. Main outcome measures: Primary outcome was pain recorded using the visual analogue scale (VAS). Two secondary outcomes were recorded using the Japanese Orthopedic Association low-back pain scale (JOA) and the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome integral scale (TCMS) as assessment tools. Results Between baseline and postintervention, all changes in outcome metric scales were statistically significant ( P < 0.001). Compared to the control group, patients in the test group had a significantly greater treatment effect in all outcome variables, as indicated by lower VAS and TCMS scores and higher JOA scores, after the one-week intervention period ( P < 0.001). Further, according to the findings of multivariate linear regression analysis, the participants' pain (VAS score) was related to their marital status, age, smoking habits and body mass index. No adverse reactions were reported for any participants in this trial. Conclusion The effectiveness of TCM combined with the new physiotherapy tool is superior to that of NSAID combined with topical plasters, regarding to pain intensity, TCM symptoms and quality of life. The TCM plus physiotherapy also showed more stable and long-lasting therapeutic effects. Trial registration: This study was registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200055655).

Abstract:Background: Few studies have explored the correlation between asthma medication and features on HRCT images. We aim to analyse the differences and temporal changes of lung function and airway resistance in asthma with diverse HRCT phenotypes in a short period after inhalation of budesonide/formoterol. Method: This observational study recruited 55 adult patients with varying severities of asthma. We performed detailed airway metrics measurements of chest CT scans, such as airway wall thickness (WT), wall area percentage (WA%), wall thickness percentage (T/OR), and airways with an inner perimeter of 10 mm (Pi10). The effect of lung structural features on asthma medication response was explored according to the WA% and T/OR twelve hours post-drug administration. Using multivariable regression models, we then assessed the influence of WA% on lung function. Results: WA% (p < 0.001) and T/OR (p < 0.001) significantly increased in asthma than in healthy control subjects. Compared to mild asthma, airway walls were further thickened (WA%, p = 0.023; T/OR: p = 0.029) and associated with lumen narrowing (Pi10, p = 0.055) in moderate to severe asthma. WA% and T/OR correlated well with lung function (FEV1, FVC, MMEF, and PEF) and airway resistance (R5, R20, Rp, and Fres). Regression analysis showed that MEF25 decreased with increasing age and WA% (R2 = 0.58, p < 0.001). Patients with thickened airway walls experienced a maximal increase in FVC, FEV1, and PEF at 2 h (p < 0.001) and a maximal decrease of R5, Z5, and Rp at 2 h (p < 0.001) in those with a thickened airway pattern. Conclusions: Asthma patients with different bronchial wall thicknesses exhibited variable lung function changes. Specifically, patients with thick airway wall patterns were more sensitive to inhaled budesonide in the short term.

Efficacy of wet cupping in the pain management of cervical spondylosis - A randomized, controlled, open -label, parallel-group clinical trial

Abstract:Background and objective: Cervical spondylosis is a chronic degenerative process of the cervical spine characterized by pain in neck, degenerative changes in intervertebral disc and osteophyte formation. Cervical spondylosis is translated as Waja' ur Raqaba, a type of joint pain. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of wet cupping in the pain management of cervical spondylosis. Methods: This Open, randomized, controlled, clinical study was conducted on 44 patients. Subjects in the test group (n = 22) received a series of three-staged wet cupping treatment, performed on 0, 7th and 14th day. Subjects in the control group (n = 22) received 12 sittings of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): 6 sittings per week for two weeks. The objective findings of treatment were assessed with the help of VAS, Neck Disability Index (NDI) and Cervical range of motion. Results: Intra group comparison in test group from baseline to 21st day were found highly significant (p < 0.001) in terms of VAS, NDI, Flexion, Extension and Left rotation score. While in Right rotation, Left rotation and Left lateral flexion score were found moderately significant (p < 0.01). Statistically significant difference was observed between two groups at 21st day in VAS scale, NDI, and Cervical range of motion score (p < 0.001). Interpretation and conclusion: Ḥijāma Bish Sharṭ was found better in the management of pain due to cervical spondylosis than TENS. It can be concluded that Ḥijāma Bish Sharṭ may a better option for the pain management of cervical spondylosis. Dry cupping as an adjuvant treatment of individuals with severe pneumonia: study protocol for a placebo-controlled, randomised study

Abstract:Background Severe pneumonia (SP) stands as one of the most prevalent critical illnesses encountered in clinical practice, characterised by its rapid onset and progression, numerous complications and elevated mortality rates. While modern medical interventions primarily focus on symptomatic management such as anti-infective therapy and mechanical ventilation, challenges including high drug resistance and suboptimal therapeutic outcomes for certain patients persist. Dry cupping as an ancient practice with over a millennium of clinical use in China is renowned for its convenience and perceived clinical efficacy in various illnesses. Nevertheless, the lack of well-designed studies assessing its effects remains a notable gap in the literature. This protocol describes a placebo-controlled, randomised, single-blind study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dry cupping as an adjuvant treatment for SP. Methods and analysis 66 patients diagnosed with SP, aged 18–80 years, will be randomly divided into two groups: intervention group, receiving 10 times of dry cupping treatment; control group, receiving placebo dry cupping therapy. Both applications are used in bilateral Fei Shu (BL13), Pi Shu (BL21) and Shen Shu (BL22) cupping. The application will be conducted once a day for 10 days. Participants will be assessed before treatment (D0), after the first intervention (D1), after the fifth intervention (D5) and after treatment ended (D10). The assessments include blood oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, traditional Chinese medicine symptom score, inflammatory response, mechanical ventilation time and oxygen condition. Ethics and dissemination This protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Seventh People's Hospital (2023-7th-HIBR-070). Abstract:Cupping therapy is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine, and its efficacy has been gradually accepted and confirmed by modern clinical medicine, but its physiological mechanisms have no consensus. In the present paper, we summarized the related mechanisms from results of both domestic and international researches which include 1) blood circulation promotion theory, 2) neurological reflex theory, 3) gate theory of pain, 4) inflammation-immune reaction theory and 5) skin tension increase theory. We also reviewed progresses of clinical researches about application of cupping therapy to cardiovascular diseases, chronic musculoskeletal pain, migraine and other painful symptoms, as well as arthritis which effects involve the above mentioned blood-circulation promotion, tension-increase, gate theory and inflammation-immune reaction, respectively. We believe that the mechanisms of cupping therapy are not independent and should be explored further from different perspectives.
Photosynthetic Carbon Incorporation and Turnover in Antarctic Cryptoendolithic Microbial Communities: Are They the Slowest-Growing Communities on Earth?

Abstract:The main forms of terrestrial life in the cold, desolate Ross Desert of Antarctica are lichen-dominated or cyanobacterium-dominated cryptoendolithic (hidden in rock) microbial communities. Though microbial community biomass (as measured by extractable lipid phosphate) was well within the range of values determined for other microbial communities, community lipid carbon turnover times (calculated from community lipid biomass, rates of community photosynthetic carbon incorporation into lipids versus temperature, and the in situ temperature record) were among the longest on Earth (ca. 20,000 years). When the temperature is above freezing and moisture is present, moderate rates of photosynthesis can be measured. Lichen communities had a psychrophilic temperature response (maximal rate of 4.5 ng of C h-1 m-2 at 10°C) while cyanobacteria communities had maximal rates at 20 to 30°C (3 ng of C h-1 m-2). These extraordinarily slowly growing communities were not nutrient limited. No significant changes in photosynthetic metabolism were observed upon additions of 100 nM to 1 mM nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, and manganese. These simple, tenacious microbial communities demonstrate strategies of survival under conditions normally considered too extreme for life.
Reviving ancient therapeutics in modern medicine: an immunological and biological narrative review of wet cupping in the management of Hashimoto's thyroiditis

Abstract:Background and objective: The interwoven immunological, biological, and genetic complexity of thyroid diseases makes suitable targeted therapies particularly challenging to develop. Stemming from ancient practices, al-hijamah, or wet cupping, has achieved notable popularity in recent years, leading to unique applications in modern medicine. By grappling with the current literature that links the effects of wet cupping with the immune system in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), this narrative review aims to compose a comprehensive assessment of this adjunctive treatment based on evidence of its integration into practice. Methods: Between upregulating critical players of the innate immune system, such as immunostimulatory cytokines, white blood cells (WBCs) and natural killer (NK) cells, and downregulating essential thyroid antibodies (anti-thyroid peroxidase and anti-thyroglobulin) and inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate), wet cupping practices provide promising complementary therapy for hypothyroidism. Key content and findings: Wet cupping manipulates in vivo molecular mechanisms, as outlined in hemodynamic and microparticle clearance theories, to slow disease progression and even development in disease-free populations. Given the established utilization of wet cupping in the context of autoimmune diseases and inflammatory conditions, the emerging utility of wet cupping continues to gain credibility. Conclusions: This literature review illuminates the documented improvements in immune and biological function due to cupping therapeutic practices and sheds light on its appropriate application in the clinical setting for patients with HT. Furthermore, this review proposes a clear need for implementing future clinical trials, which may effectively bridge pathophysiological causes of hypothyroidism with underrated techniques for enhanced thyroid health.

Abstract:Background: Although asthmatic patients with chest tightness as their only presenting symptom (chest tightness variant asthma, CTVA) have clinical characteristics of eosinophilic airway inflammation similar to those of classic asthma (CA), the response of CTVA to treatment regimens used for CA is unclear. Objective: The response of 76 CTVA patients to standard asthma treatments with inhaled corticosteroids with long-acting beta-agonists was explored. Methods: The study was a multicenter, prospective, real-life study conducted in 16 centers in China. The primary efficacy endpoint was the changes in 5-point asthma control questionnaire (ACQ-5) score before and after treatment. Results: After 52 weeks of treatment with therapy regimens used for CA, the ACQ-5 scores decreased markedly from 1.38±0.91 (first administration) to 0.74±0.75 (26 weeks), and 0.71±0.78 (52 weeks) (P<0.01), and the mean decrease for ACQ-5 between 52 weeks and first administration was 0.674(95%CI 0.447-0.9, P<0.001), while the asthma quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) scores increased from 5.77±0.75 (first administration) to 6.23±0.59 (26 weeks) and 6.20±0.58 (52 weeks) (P<0.01), and the mean increase for AQLQ between 52 weeks and first administration was 0.441(95%CI 0.258-0.625, P<0.001). Diurnal variation in peak expiratory flow (PEF) decreased from 18.4%±9.78(first administration) to 9.32%±5.33 (52 weeks) (P<0.01), and the provocation dose that caused a 20% fall in the FEV1 (PD20-FEV1) was significantly improved after one year of treatment. Conclusion: CTVA patients showed a good clinical response to anti-asthma treatments, and the treatment effects may be related to the severity of CTVA.

Abstract:Recently, non-pharmacological treatments are gaining increasing importance for improving the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of conducting extensive research on Chuna manual therapy (CMT). This study investigated the effectiveness and safety of CMT adjuvant to Western medicine (WM) in patients with COPD. Forty patients with COPD were randomized into two groups in a 1:1 ratio: experimental (CMT plus WM) and control (WM only) groups. The CMT intervention was administered once a week for eight weeks. The primary outcome measured was the 6-min walk distance (6MWD). Secondary outcomes measured were: forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), assessments using the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for dyspnea, the COPD Assessment Test (CAT), St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), and the EuroQoL five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D). The mean differences in FEV1 (L) between Weeks 1 and 8 were statistically significant between the groups (p = 0.039). Additionally, the experimental group showed improved 6MWD, mMRC, VAS for dyspnea, CAT, SGRQ (total), and EQ-VAS scores than the control group. However, the differences between the two groups were not statistically significant. No adverse events were observed during this trial. CMT has the potential to alleviate symptoms, improve quality of life, and delay the decline in lung function in patients with COPD. The results of this pilot study could lead to large-scale clinical trials in the future.
