Abstract:We investigate electrostatic traps as a novel source of positron beams for accelerator physics applications. Penning-Malmberg (PM) traps are commonly employed in low-energy antimatter experiments. Positrons contained in the trap are cooled to room temperature or below. We calculate the thermal emittance of the positrons in the trap and show that it is comparable to or better than the performance of state-of-the-art photocathode guns. We propose a compact positron source comprised of a PM trap, electrostatic compressor, and rf accelerator that can be built and operated at a fraction of the cost and size of traditional target-based positron sources, albeit at a reduced repetition rate. We model the acceleration of a positron bunch up to an energy of 17.6 MeV with a final thermal emittance of 0.60 $\mu$m-rad and bunch length of 190 $\mu$m. This system may be useful for acceleration physics studies, such as investigations of flat-beam sources for linear colliders and positron plasma wakefield acceleration.

Abstract:Positrons are accumulated within a Penning trap designed to make more precise measurements of the positron and electron magnetic moments. The retractable radioactive source used is weak enough to require no license for handling radioactive material and the radiation dosage one meter from the source gives an exposure several times smaller than the average radiation dose on the earth's surface. The 100 mK trap is mechanically aligned with the 4.2 K superconducting solenoid that produces a 6 tesla magnetic trapping field with a direct mechanical coupling.

Stable radiation field positron acceleration in a micro-tube

Abstract:Nowadays, there is a desperate need for an ultra-acceleration-gradient method for antimatter particles, which holds great significance in exploring the origin of matter, CP violation, astrophysics, and medical physics. Compared to traditional accelerators with low gradients and a limited acceleration region for positrons in laser-driven charge separation fields, we propose an innovative high-gradient positron acceleration mechanism with implementation advantages. Injecting a relativistic electron beam into a dense plasma micro-tube generates a stable and periodic high-intensity mid-infrared radiation (mid-IR) field, reaching tens of GV/m. This field, propagating synchronously with the electron beam, achieves a 1 GeV energy gain for the positron bunch within 140 picoseconds with a minimal energy spread-approximately 1.56% during a stable phase. By utilizing continuous mid-IR, the efficiency of energy transfer from the electron beam to either a single positron bunch or three positron bunches simultaneously could reach up to 20% and 40%, respectively. This acceleration scheme can achieve cascaded acceleration for a single positron bunch and series acceleration for multiple positron bunches in a continuous, stable, and efficient manner.

Abstract:Plasmas are a compelling medium for particle acceleration owing to their natural ability to sustain electric fields that are orders of magnitude larger than those available in conventional radio-frequency accelerators. Plasmas are also unique amongst accelerator technologies in that they respond differently to beams of opposite charge. The asymmetric response of a plasma to highly-relativistic electron and positron beams arises from the fact that plasmas are composed of light, mobile electrons and heavy, stationary ions. Hollow channel plasma acceleration is a technique for symmetrizing the response of the plasma, such that it works equally well for high-energy electron and positron beams. In the experiment described here, we demonstrate the generation of a positron beam-driven wake in an extended, annular plasma channel, and acceleration of a second trailing witness positron bunch by the wake. The leading bunch excites the plasma wakefield and loses energy to the plasma, while the witness bunch experiences an accelerating field and gains energy, thus providing a proof-of-concept for hollow channel acceleration of positron beams. At a bunch separation of 330 um, the accelerating gradient is 70 MV/m, the transformer ratio is 0.55, and the energy transfer efficiency is 18% for a drive-to-witness beam charge ratio of 5:1.

Dense polarized positrons from beam-solid interactions

Abstract:Relativistic positron sources with high spin polarization have important applications in nuclear and particle physics and many frontier fields. However, it is challenging to produce dense polarized positrons. Here we present a simple and effective method to achieve such a positron source by directly impinging a relativistic high-density electron beam on the surface of a solid target. During the interaction, a strong return current of plasma electrons is induced and subsequently asymmetric quasistatic magnetic fields as high as megatesla are generated along the target surface. This gives rise to strong radiative spin flips and multiphoton processes, thus leading to efficient generation of copious polarized positrons. With three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate the production of a dense highly-polarized multi-GeV positron beam with an average spin polarization above 40% and nC-scale charge per shot. This offers a novel route for the studies of laserless strong-field quantum electrodynamics physics and for the development of high-energy polarized positron sources.

Abstract:The Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN provides antiproton bunches with a kinetic energy of 5.3 MeV. The Extra-Low ENergy Antiproton ring at CERN, commissioned at the AD in 2018, now supplies a bunch of electron-cooled antiprotons at a fixed energy of 100 keV. The MUSASHI antiproton trap was upgraded by replacing the radio-frequency quadrupole decelerator with a pulsed drift tube to re-accelerate antiprotons and optimize the injection energy into the degrader foils. By increasing the beam energy to 119 keV, a cooled antiproton accumulation efficiency of (26 +- 6)% was achieved.

Metric-based Hamiltonians, null boundaries, and isolated horizons

Abstract:We extend the quasilocal (metric-based) Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity so that it may be used to study regions of spacetime with null boundaries. In particular we use this generalized Brown-York formalism to study the physics of isolated horizons. We show that the first law of isolated horizon mechanics follows directly from the first variation of the Hamiltonian. This variation is not restricted to the phase space of solutions to the equations of motion but is instead through the space of all (off-shell) spacetimes that contain isolated horizons. We find two-surface integrals evaluated on the horizons that are consistent with the Hamiltonian and which define the energy and angular momentum of these objects. These are closely related to the corresponding Komar integrals and for Kerr-Newman spacetime are equal to the corresponding ADM/Bondi quantities. Thus, the energy of an isolated horizon calculated by this method is in agreement with that recently calculated by Ashtekar and collaborators but not the same as the corresponding quasilocal energy defined by Brown and York. Isolated horizon mechanics and Brown-York thermodynamics are compared.

Abstract:The next generation of Petawatt-class lasers presents the opportunity to study positron production and acceleration experimentally, in an all-optical setting. Several configurations were proposed to produce and accelerate positrons in a single laser stage. However, these configurations have yielded limited positron beam quality and low particle count. This paper presents methods for improving the injection and retention of positrons obtained via Bethe-Heitler pair production and accelerated using direct laser acceleration (DLA) in a plasma channel. The work first introduces a semi-analytical model which predicts laser energy depletion in this highly nonlinear regime. We demonstrate through PIC simulations that accelerated electrons can induce charge inversion within the channel, leading to positron trapping and acceleration. We investigate how laser focusing position, channel wall density, target foil position and target thickness influence positron creation and retention. Our configuration can achieve an 8-fold increase in positron retention compared to previous studies and a higher number of positrons produced overall. This work establishes a robust, single-stage approach for obtaining positron beams, opening new avenues for experiments with Petawatt-class lasers and potential applications in electron-positron collisions and QED cascades.

Maximum entropy states of collisionless positron-electron plasma in a dipole magnetic field

Abstract:We are developing a positron-electron plasma trap based on a dipole magnetic field generated by a levitated superconducting magnet to investigate the physics of magnetized plasmas with mass symmetry as well as antimatter components. Such laboratory magnetosphere is deemed essential for the understanding of pair plasmas in astrophysical environments, such as magnetars and blackholes, and represents a novel technology with potential applications in antimatter confinement and development of coherent gamma-ray lasers. The design of the device requires a preemptive analysis of the achievable self-organized steady states. In this study, we construct a theoretical model describing maximum entropy states of a collisionless positron-electron plasma confined by a dipole magnetic field, and demonstrate efficient confinement of both species under a wide range of physical parameters by analysing the effect of the three adiabatic invariants on the phase space distribution function. The theory is verified by numerical evaluation of spatial density, electrostatic potential, and toroidal rotation velocity for each species in correspondence of the maximum entropy state.

Abstract:High gradients of energy gain and high energy efficiency are necessary parameters for compact, cost-efficient and high-energy particle colliders. Plasma Wakefield Accelerators (PWFA) offer both, making them attractive candidates for next-generation colliders. In these devices, a charge-density plasma wave is excited by an ultra-relativistic bunch of charged particles (the drive bunch). The energy in the wave can be extracted by a second bunch (the trailing bunch), as this bunch propagates in the wake of the drive bunch. While a trailing electron bunch was accelerated in a plasma with more than a gigaelectronvolt of energy gain, accelerating a trailing positron bunch in a plasma is much more challenging as the plasma response can be asymmetric for positrons and electrons. We report the demonstration of the energy gain by a distinct trailing positron bunch in a plasma wakefield accelerator, spanning nonlinear to quasi-linear regimes, and unveil the beam loading process underlying the accelerator energy efficiency. A positron bunch is used to drive the plasma wake in the experiment, though the quasi-linear wake structure could as easily be formed by an electron bunch or a laser driver. The results thus mark the first acceleration of a distinct positron bunch in plasma-based particle accelerators.
Predominantly electric storage ring with nuclear spin control capability

Abstract:A predominantly electric E\&m storage ring, with weak superimposed magnetic bending, is shown to be capable of storing two different particle type bunches, such as helion (h) and deuteron (d), or h and electron ($e^-$), co-traveling with different velocities on the same central orbit. Rear-end collisions occurring periodically in a full acceptance particle detector/polarimeter, allow the (previously inaccessible) direct measurement of the spin dependence of nuclear transmutation for center of mass (CM) kinetic energies (KE) ranging from hundreds of keV up toward pion production thresholds. With the nuclear process occurring in a semi-relativistic moving frame, all initial and final state particles have convenient laboratory frame KEs in the tens to hundreds of MeV. The rear-end collisions occur as faster stored bunches pass through slower bunches. An inexpensive facility capable of meeting these requirements is described, with several nuclear channels as examples. Especially noteworthy are the $e^{+/-}$-induced weak interaction triton (t) $\beta$-decay processes, t + $e^+ \rightarrow$ h + $\nu$ and h + $e^- \rightarrow$ t + $\nu$. Experimental capability of measurement of the spin dependence of the induced triton case is emphasized. For cosmological nuclear physics, the experimental improvement will be produced by the storage ring's capability to investigate the spin dependence of nuclear transmutation processes at reduced kinetic energies compared to what can be obtained with fixed target geometry.

Radiation-dominated injection of positrons generated by the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process into a plasma channel

Abstract:Plasma acceleration is considered a prospective technology for building a compact multi-TeV electron-positron collider in the future. The challenge of this endeavor is greater for positrons than for the electrons because usually the self-generated fields from laser-plasma interaction are not well-suited for positron focusing and on-axis guiding. In addition, an external positron source is required, while electrons are naturally available in the plasma. Here, we study electron-positron pair generation by an orthogonal collision of a multi-PW laser pulse and a GeV electron beam by the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. We studied conditions favorable for positron deflection in the direction of the laser pulse propagation, which favors injection into the plasma for further acceleration. We demonstrate using the OSIRIS particle-in-cell framework that the radiation reaction triggered by ultra-high laser intensity plays a crucial role in the positron injection. It provides a suppression of the initial transverse momentum gained by the positrons from the Breit-Wheeler process. For the parameters used in this work, the intensity of at least 2.2x1023 W/cm2 is needed in order to inject more than 1% of positrons created. Above this threshold, the percentage of injected positrons rapidly increases with intensity. Moreover, subsequent direct laser acceleration of positrons in a plasma channel, using the same laser pulse that created them, can ensure a boost of the final positron energy by a factor of two. The positron focusing and guiding on the axis is provided by significant electron beam loading that changes the internal structure of the channel fields.

Highly Charged Ions in Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Penning Traps

Abstract:A newly constructed apparatus at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is designed for the isolation, manipulation, and study of highly charged ions. Highly charged ions are produced in the NIST electron-beam ion trap (EBIT), extracted through a beamline that selects a single mass/charge species, then captured in a compact Penning trap. The magnetic field of the trap is generated by cylindrical NdFeB permanent magnets integrated into its electrodes. In a room-temperature prototype trap with a single NdFeB magnet, species including Ne10+ and N7+ were confined with storage times of order 1 second, showing the potential of this setup for manipulation and spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a controlled environment. Ion capture has since been demonstrated with similar storage times in a more-elaborate Penning trap that integrates two coaxial NdFeB magnets for improved B-field homogeneity. Ongoing experiments utilize a second-generation apparatus that incorporates this two-magnet Penning trap along with a fast time-of-flight MCP detector capable of resolving the charge-state evolution of trapped ions. Holes in the two-magnet Penning trap ring electrode allow for optical and atomic beam access. Possible applications include spectroscopic studies of one-electron ions in Rydberg states, as well as highly charged ions of interest in atomic physics, metrology, astrophysics, and plasma diagnostics.

Self-injection by trapping of plasma electrons oscillating in rising density gradient at the vacuum-plasma interface

Abstract:We model the trapping of plasma $e^-$ within the density structures excited by a propagating energy source ($\beta_{S}\simeq1$) in a rising plasma density gradient. Rising density gradient leads to spatially contiguous coupled up-chirped plasmons ($d{\omega^2_{pe}(x)}/{dx}>0$). Therefore phase mixing between plasmons can lead to trapping until the plasmon field is high enough such that $e^-$ trajectories returning towards a longer wavelength see a trapping potential. Rising plasma density gradients are ubiquitous for confining the plasma within sources at the vacuum-plasma interfaces. Therefore trapping of plasma-$e^-$ in a rising ramp is important for acceleration diagnostics and to understand the energy dissipation from the excited plasmon train \cite{LTE-2013}. Down-ramp in density \cite{density-transition-2001} has been used for plasma-$e^-$ trapping within the first bucket behind the driver. Here, in rising density gradient the trapping does not occur in the first plasmon bucket but in subsequent plasmon buckets behind the driver. Trapping reduces the Hamiltonian of each bucket where $e^-$ are trapped, so it is a wakefield-decay probe. Preliminary computational results for beam and laser-driven wakefield are shown.

Abstract:We consider theoretically positronium formation in collisions of positrons with excited hydrogen atoms H( ) in an infrared laser field. This process is assisted by the dipolar focusing effect: a positron moving in a superposition of a laser field and the dipolar field can approach the atomic target even if its trajectory starts with a very large impact parameter, leading to a significant enhancement of the Ps formation cross section. Classical trajectory Monte Carlo method, which is justified for , allows efficient calculation of this enhancement. A similar effect can occur in collisions of positrons with other atoms in excited states which can lead to improvements in efficiency of positronium formation.

Abstract:A method is proposed to generate low emittance electron bunches from two color laser pulses in a laser-plasma accelerator. A two-region gas structure is used, containing a short region of a high-Z gas (e.g., krypton) for ionization injection, followed by a longer region of a low-Z gas for post-acceleration. A long-laser-wavelength (e.g., 5 micron) pump pulse excites plasma wake without triggering the inner-shell electron ionization of the high-Z gas due to low electric fields. A short-laser-wavelength (e.g., 0.4 micron) injection pulse, located at a trapping phase of the wake, ionizes the inner-shell electrons of the high-Z gas, resulting in ionization-induced trapping. Compared with a single-pulse ionization injection, this scheme offers an order of magnitude smaller residual transverse momentum of the electron bunch, which is a result of the smaller vector potential amplitude of the injection pulse.

Abstract:A novel approach for positron injection and acceleration in laser driven plasma wakefield is proposed. A theoretical model is developed and confirmed through PIC simulation. One ring-shaped beam and one co-axially propagating Gaussian beam drive wakefields in a preformed plasma volume filled with both electrons and positrons. The laser's ponderomotive force as well as the charge separation force in the front bucket of the first bubble are utilized to provide the transverse momenta of injected positrons and those positrons can be trapped by the focusing field and then accelerated by the wakefield. The simulation shows that a relatively high-charge, quasi-monoenergetic positron beams can be obtained.

Abstract:Applying the frozen-spin technique in a compact 3 T solenoid will enable a search for the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) with unprecedented sensitivity, improving upon the current direct limit by approximately a factor of 1000. After injection of a selected muon, a pulsed magnetic field will reduce its longitudinal momentum sufficiently to be confined within a static weakly-focusing magnetic field and maintain a closed circular orbit. A precisely tuned radial electric field will cancel the spin precession induced by the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, a = (g - 2)/2, relative to the orientation of the momentum. In this configuration, the EDM becomes the only remaining inherent source of relative precession. Asymmetry in the direction and energy of positrons emitted from muon decay provides an experimental signature of such precession. In the first of two phases, 28 MeV/c muons from the πE1 beamline at PSI will be used to demonstrate the systems necessary for injecting and trapping muons, tuning fields to the frozen-spin condition and reconstructing positron trajectories. Designs for the coils producing the pulsed magnetic field and the electrodes applying the frozen-spin electric field are currently being evaluated with simulations and prototypes. These systems must be designed in parallel, especially due to the impact of eddy-currents induced in the electrodes by the pulsed magnetic field. The electrode design must minimise eddy-currents to preserve the field strength of the pulsed field responsible for muon trapping, while maintaining the electric field uniformity necessary to achieve the sensitivity goal. This article summarises some of the efforts underway to address these design challenges.

Abstract:Electron beam ion traps (EBIT) are ideal tools for both production and study of highly charged ions (HCI). In order to reduce their construction, maintenance, and operation costs we have developed a novel, compact, room-temperature design, the Heidelberg Compact EBIT (HC-EBIT). Four already commissioned devices operate at the strongest fields (up to 0.86 T) reported for such EBITs using permanent magnets, run electron beam currents up to 80 mA and energies up to 10 keV. They demonstrate HCI production, trapping, and extraction of pulsed Ar$^{16+}$ bunches and continuous 100 pA ion beams of highly charged Xe up to charge state 29+, already with a 4 mA, 2 keV electron beam. Moreover, HC-EBITs offer large solid-angle ports and thus high photon count rates, e. g., in x-ray spectroscopy of dielectronic recombination in HCIs up to Fe$^{24+}$, achieving an electron-energy resolving power of $E/\Delta E > 1500$ at 5 keV. Besides traditional on-axis electron guns, we have also implemented a novel off-axis gun for laser, synchrotron, and free-electron laser applications, offering clear optical access along the trap axis. We report on its first operation at a synchrotron radiation facility demonstrating resonant photoexcitation of highly charged oxygen.
