Abstract:Objectives: Vitamin D deficiency is common among older adults, but its association with physical function is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and disability in activities of daily living (ADL), mobility, and objective physical functioning among Chinese older adults. Methods: We used cross-sectional data of 2225 older adults (>= 65 years) who participated in the 2011/2012 main survey of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) and the 2012 biomarker sub-study. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured by enzyme immunoassay. Outcomes included ADL disability, mobility disability, and disability in three objective physical examinations (standing-up from a chair, picking-up a book from the floor, and turning-around 360 degrees). Results: The multiple regression models suggested that participants in the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency group had higher odds of ADL disability (OR: 4.08; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.81, 5.92), mobility disability (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.41), and disability in standing-up from a chair (OR: 2.43; 95% CI: 1.60, 3.69), picking up a book from the floor (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 2.07, 4.60), and turning-around 360 degrees (OR: 3.09; 95% CI: 2.07, 4.60). Subgroup analyses revealed that some of the above associations (particularly those with mobility disability and disability in turning-around 360 degrees) were only statistically significant among the oldest-old. Conclusions: Among the oldest-old in China, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency was associated with disability in ADL, mobility, and objective physical functioning, highlighting the importance of managing the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level to promote healthy aging.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between serum vitamin D levels and both visceral adipose and with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Chinese postmenopausal women. Four hundred and fifty-one postmenopausal women between 45 and 74years of age (mean (+/- SD) age 57.3 +/- 4.6years) were enrolled in the study. All subjects participated in the Shanghai Obesity Study between June and August 2011 and underwent abdominal magnetic resonance imaging and an abdominal ultrasonography. Patients with a visceral fat area (VFA) 80cm(2) were classified as abdominally obese. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D-3 (25(OH)D-3) levels were measured with an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The prevalence of NAFLD in the study population was 34.8% (n=157). Women with abdominal obesity had significantly lower serum 25(OH)D-3 levels than those without abdominal obesity (median (interquartile range) 11.23 (8.64-14.12) vs 12.56 (9.41-15.98)ng/mL, respectively; P<0.01). Regardless of abdominal obesity status, serum 25(OH)D-3 levels in patients with NAFLD were lower than those without non-NAFLD (11.14 (8.63-13.81) vs 12.92 (9.48-16.37) ng/mL (P<0.05) for those without abdominal obesity; 10.86 (8.61-13.56) vs 11.55 (8.82-16.38) ng/mL (P<0.05) for those with abdominal obesity). Partial correlation analyses demonstrated a negative correlation between serum 25(OH)D-3 levels and VFA (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that high serum 25(OH)D-3 levels were a protective factor against NAFLD after adjusting for risk factors such as VFA. In conclusion, independent of visceral obesity, vitamin D is inversely correlated with NAFLD in Chinese postmenopausal women.
Association between Vitamin D Deficiency and High Serum Levels of Small Dense LDL in Middle-Aged Adults

Abstract:Recent studies suggested a potential link between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular risk factors, including dyslipidemia. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum 25(OH)D levels and atherogenic lipid profiles, specifically, that of small dense low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (sdLDL-C). From 2009 to 2011, a total of 715 individuals aged 35–65 without evident cardiovascular disease (CVD) were enrolled. Their levels of serum 25(OH)D and lipid profiles were measured. Vitamin D deficiency was found to be more common in females, smokers, alcohol drinkers, individuals at a younger age, and those who do not exercise regularly. The analysis of lipid profiles revealed that high sdLDL-C levels were associated with low serum vitamin D levels and were more common among cigarette smokers; alcohol drinkers; individuals with hypertension; individuals with high BMI; and those with high levels of fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL-C, and VLDL-C. The use of multivariate logistic regression verified a strong negative correlation between low vitamin D status (serum 25(OH)D < 15 ng/mL) and the three identified biomarkers of atherogenic dyslipidemia: high serum levels of sdLDL-C, triglycerides, and VLDL-C. This study provides strong evidence that vitamin D deficiency is associated with atherogenic dyslipidemia, and in particular, high sdLDL-C levels in middle-aged adults without CVD.

Abstract:This study investigated the association between serum 25(OH)D3 levels and cardiovascular risk-related indicators. 4 727 participants aged 20 and above from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-2018 database were enrolled. Body mass index, hypersensitive C-reactive protein, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, waist-height ratio, and total cholesterol were selected as the research indicators. Weighted multiple linear regression models, subgroup analyses, smooth curve fitting, and saturation threshold effect analyses were employed to explore the relationship between serum 25(OH)D3 and these indicators. The results showed that after full adjustment for covariates, every 1 nmol/L increase in serum 25(OH)D3, the changes in β (95%CI) values for body mass index(BMI), hypersensitive C-reactive protein(hs-CRP), systolic blood pressure(SBP), waist-height ratio(WHtR), high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), and total cholesterol(TC) were -0.05 (-0.06, -0.04) kg/m2, -0.01 (-0.02, -0.01) mg/L, -0.02 (-0.04, -0.01) mmHg, -0.000 7 (-0.000 8, -0.000 6), 0.10 (0.08, 0.11) mg/dl, and 0.08 (0.04, 0.12) mg/dl, respectively. Female participants were more sensitive to changes in serum 25(OH)D3, while participants aged 60 and above were relatively less sensitive. The relationship between serum 25(OH)D3 and these indicators partially exhibited nonlinear patterns across different gender and age subgroups. The saturation threshold effect analysis revealed 8 meaningful inflection points. In summary, vitamin D has a close association with cardiovascular risk-related indicators.
Modeling Unintentional Drowning Mortality Rates in Thailand, 2000-2009

Abstract:The objectives of this study were to investigate the pattern of unintentional drowning deaths and to identify the factors associated with drowning deaths in Thailand from 2000 to 2009. Reported death data were obtained from the Bureau of Health Policy and Strategy, Ministry of Public Health. During the period from 2000 to 2009, 41 620 deaths were reported and 1016 deaths were excluded from this study because of unknown place of death. The overall drowning death rate per 100 000 population was 6.3 (9.6 in males and 3.0 in females). The highest death rate was in males aged 0 to 4 years and in year 2006. Males in all age-groups (except in those aged 15-29 years) and females aged 0 to 4 years had higher drowning death rates than the average rate. Death rates in some public health areas in the central, the northeast, and the northern regions and in year 2005 and 2006 were higher than the average rate.

Abstract:Background: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid that influences cardiovascular health by affecting lipid metabolism. Since dyslipidemia is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), our study aimed to explore the relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid parameters, considering the effects of age and gender. Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 47,778 outpatients, we analyzed correlations between two forms of vitamin D—25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D)—and lipid parameters, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and total cholesterol (TC). Subgroup analyses by age and gender provided additional insights. Results: Results showed that 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with LDL and TC across the cohort. This association was particularly evident in men over 50, whereas women showed a positive correlation with LDL and TC before age 50 and a negative correlation after. HDL levels positively correlated with 25(OH)D across all age groups, with the strongest association in postmenopausal women. In contrast, 1,25(OH)2D showed a positive correlation only with HDL in individuals over 50, with no significant correlation with LDL or TC in any age group. Conclusions: In conclusion, findings from this cross-sectional study underscore an association between elevated levels of 25(OH)D and more favorable lipid profiles, characterized by reduced LDL and total cholesterol, as well as increased HDL levels. This association is particularly pronounced among individuals over 50 years of age and postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The primary objective of this study was to explore the association of vitamin D with the monocyte to HDL-C ratio (MHR) among medical staff in Chengdu, China. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study involved 538 medical staff, including 393 females and 145 males, and included data on gender, age, body mass index, and laboratory parameters (including complete blood count, vitamin D levels, lipid, etc.). According to serum 25 (OH)D < 20 ng/ml as vitamin D deficiency, subjects were divided into two groups based on serum 25 (OH)D levels: a vitamin D deficiency group with serum 25 (OH)D < 20 ng/ml and a vitamin D sufficiency group with serum 25 (OH)D ≥ 20 ng/ml. When considering vitamin D as a categorical variable, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the risk factors associated with vitamin D deficiency. On the other hand, when examining the factors influencing vitamin D levels as a continuous variable, a multiple linear regression model was utilized. Results The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 86.25% among all the participants. Males exhibited a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency compared to females (β=0.383, P = 0.026). Vitamin D deficiency risk decreased with age (β = 0.910, P < 0.001). Additionally, elevated values of MHR were associated with an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency (β = 1.530, P = 0.019). When treating vitamin D as a continuous variable, the results of multiple linear regression revealed that age (β = 0.342, P < 0.001), and TG (β=-1.327, P = 0.010) were independent influencing factors for vitamin D levels, indicating that vitamin D levels increase with age. A reverse association between MHR and vitamin D levels demonstrated a marginal trend toward significance (β=-0.581, P = 0.052). Conclusions Vitamin D is inversely associated with MHR among young medical staff in Chengdu, China.

Abstract:Background/objectivesCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity globally. Results from previous studies are inconsistent and it remains unclear whether low-serum 25 OHD levels are associated with an increased risk of CVD. These associations have been little studied in young women. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between serum 25 OHD and obesity, body composition, metabolic profiles and blood pressure in young women.Subjects/methodsWomen aged 16–25 years living in Victoria, Australia, were recruited through Facebook advertising in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed an online survey and attended a site visit in a fasted state, where parameters, including blood pressure, anthropometry, metabolic profiles, serum 25 OHD levels and body composition (using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) were measured.ResultsA total of 557 participants were recruited into this study. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that after adjusting for visceral fat, season, smoking, physical activity, age, alcohol intake, oral contraceptive use, country of birth, taking multivitamins and taking vitamin D supplement, a 10 nmol/L increase in 25 OHD levels was associated with 0.65% greater HDL levels (p = 0.016) and 0.92% greater triglyceride levels (p = 0.003). It was also associated with 0.48% lower BMI (p < 0.001), 0.50% lower total fat percentage (p < 0.001), 0.09% lower visceral fat percentage (p < 0.001), 0.14% lower visceral fat to total fat ratio (p < 0.001) and 0.36% lower trunk fat to total fat ratio (p < 0.001), after adjustment for season, smoking, physical activity, age, alcohol intake, oral contraceptive use, country of birth, taking multivitamins and taking vitamin D supplements. Although these associations were statistically significant, they were very small in magnitude and of uncertain clinical significance.ConclusionsThese findings may help to explain an association between 25 OHD levels and CVD risk factors through associations with HDL, BMI, total body and visceral fat mass. Possible underlying mechanisms warrant further investigation.

[Association of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol with Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Mortality].

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the association between high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. Methods: A total of 71 618 residents aged over 18 years with complete baseline data, who were filed on the health information big data platform of Yinzhou district, Ningbo city, Zhejiang Province from 2009 to 2014, were selected as the research population. The research population were divided into four groups according to the level of HDL-C: low-level group (HDL-C<1.0 mmol/L), intermediate-level group (1.0 mmol/L≤HDL-C<1.5 mmol/L), medium-high-level group (1.5 mmol/L≤HDL-C<2.0 mmol/L) and high-level group (HDL-C≥2.0 mmol/L). Cox proportional hazard model was used to calculate the risk ratio of cardiovascular diseases mortality in different groups. Results: The study population was followed up for a total of 427 989.4 person-years, follow-up time of (5.98±1.04)years. During the follow-up period, there were 799 deaths due to cardiovascular diseases. After adjusting for confounding factors, compared with the medium-high-level group as the reference group, the HR (95%CI) for cardiovascular diseases mortality was 1.43 (1.13-1.82) in the low-level group and 1.22 (1.02-1.46) in the high-level group. Conclusion: The low level of HDL-C (<1.5 mmol/L) is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease deaths. The level of HDL-C can be used as a biological indicator to monitor the development of cardiovascular diseases and guide treatment.
Metabolic Signatures of Genetically Elevated Vitamin D among Chinese: Observational and Mendelian Randomization Study

Abstract:Context: Observational studies have suggested that higher circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels are associated with favorable serum lipids and related metabolites. However, whether such observations reflect causality remains unclear.Objective: We aimed to investigate the causal effect of elevated 25(OH)D with a detailed systemic metabolite profile in Chinese adults.Methods: A total of 225 lipid and other metabolites were quantified in 4662 individuals in the China Kadoorie Biobank. Instrumental variable analyses were performed to test the causal associations of plasma 25(OH)D with lipids and metabolites.Results: Higher plasma 25(OH)D was related to favorable lipid profiles in observational analyses. The genetic risk score was robustly correlated with observed 25(OH)D (beta[SE] = 3.54 [0.32]; P < 1 x 10(-5), F-statistic = 122.3) and explained 8.4% of the variation in 25(OH)D in the Chinese population. For all individual metabolites, the causal estimates were not significant at the threshold P < 5 x 10(-4) (multiple testing corrected). However, a Mendelian randomization (MR) estimate showed that per 1-SD increase in genetically determined 25(OH)D was suggestive of association with decreased levels of cholesterol, lipoprotein particles, and phospholipids within very small very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) (P <= 0.05, nominal significance). For amino acids, fatty acids, ketone bodies, glycoprotein acetyls, fatty acids, and other traits, we did not observe any significant causal association.Conclusions: The MR analysis of metabolic data based a population-based cohort suggested a potential causal association of plasma 25(OH)D with cholesterol, lipoprotein particle, phospholipid concentrations, and total lipids within very small VLDL and IDL. Our findings highlight a long-term effect of 25(OH)D levels in maintaining healthy lipid metabolism.
HDL-C, Longitudinal Change and Risk of Mortality in a Chinese Cohort Study.

Abstract:Background and aims: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration and variability are both important factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. We aimed to explore the associations of HDL-C and longitudinal change in HDL-C with risk of mortality. Methods and results: We recruited a total of 69,163 participants aged 1 mmol/L and 2 mmol/L were associated with a higher risk of CVD mortality (HRs: 1.23 (95% CI: 1.01-1.50) and 1.37 (95% CI: 1.03-1.82), respectively). Compared with the stable group ([-0.1, +0.1 mmol/L]), a large decrease ([-0.5, 0.3 mmol/L]) and very large decrease (<-0.5 mmol/L) in HDL-C were associated with a higher risk of non-accidental mortality (HRs: 1.40 (95% CI: 1.21-1.63) and 1.78 (95% CI: 1.44-2.20), respectively). Similar results were observed for CVD mortality and cancer mortality. Conclusion: Extremely low or high HDL-C and a large decrease or very large decrease in HDL-C were associated with a higher risk of cause-specific mortality. Monitoring of HDL-C may have utility in identifying individuals at higher risk of mortality. Correlation of serum vitamin D with serum lipid in middle-aged and elderly people

Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation of serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH-D) with lipid profiles in middle-aged and elderly patients.Methods A total of 284 patients aged over 40 years and admitted in our hospital from May 2016 to May 2017 were selected and divided into four groups according to 25-OH-D levels as the group of normal level which was not less than 30 ng/ml,the group of slight deficiency which was between 20 and 29 ng/ml,the group of moderate deficiency which was between 10 and 19 ng/ml,and the group of severely deficiency which was under 10 ng/ml.Fasting blood draw were taken to detect liver and renal functions,lipids,calcium,phosphorus and 25-OH-D levels.The level of lipids between groups was compared by one-way ANOVA,and the association between lipid profiles and 25-OH-D levels was assessed by Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression.Results The levels of triglyceride (TG),low density lipoprotein cholesterin (LDL-C) and total cholesterol/high density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) were significantly higher and the HDL-C levels were significantly lower in the groups of severely deficiency,moderate deficiency and slight deficiency than in the normal group (P=0.035,P=0.015,P=0.013).The levels of serum 25-OH-D were significantly higher in HDL-C ≥ 1.04 mmol/L group than in H DL-C＜ 1.04 mmol/L group (Female P =0.007,male P=0.034).The correlation analysis showed that serum 25-OH-D level was positively associated with HDL-C (female r =0.309,P=0.002,male r =0.241,P=0.002).The multiple linear regression analysis showed that 25-OH-D level was positively correlated with HDL-C,after adjusting age,BMI,liver and kidney function,serum calcium and serum phosphorus (femaleβ =0.259,P =0.047,maleβ =0.217,P =0.049).Conclusion The incidence of vitamin D deficiency is high in middle-aged and elderly patients,and the level of serum 25-OH-D is positively correlated with HDL-C.

Abstract:Abstract Background This study was conducted to assess the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in older people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States. Methods We identified 3230 CKD participants aged ≥ 60 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001–2018). CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 . Mortality outcomes were determined by linkage to National Death Index (NDI) records through December 31, 2019. Restricted cubic spline based on Cox regression models were utilized to elucidate the nonlinear relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and mortality in patients with CKD. Results During median 74 months of follow-up, 1615 all-cause death and 580 CVD death were recorded. We found an L-shaped association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and all-cause and CVD mortality, reaching a plateau at 90 nmol/L. Accordingly, per one-unit increment in natural log-transformed 25(OH)D was associated with a 32% and 33% reduced risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 0.68; 95%CI, 0.56 to 0.83) and CV mortality (HR 0.69; 95%CI, 0.49 to 0.97) in participants with serum 25(OH)D < 90 nmol/L, but no considerable difference was observed in participants with serum 25(OH)D ≥ 90 nmol/L. Compared with those in the deficiency group (< 50 nmol/L), insufficient (50 to < 75 nmol/L) and sufficient group (≥ 75 nmol/L) were significantly associated with lower all-cause mortality (HR,0.83; 95%CI, 0.71 to 0.97 and HR, 0.75; 95%CI, 0.64 to 0.89) and CV mortality (HR,0.87; 95%CI, 0.68 to 1.10 and HR, 0.77; 95%CI, 0.59 to < 1.0), respectively. Conclusion An L-shaped relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels with all-cause and CVD mortality was observed in elderly CKD patients in the United States. A 25(OH)D concentration of 90 nmol/L may be the target to reduce the risk of premature death.

Abstract:BackgroundVitamin D deficiency is implicated in some diseases, including cardiovascular. Few studies have assessed the correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH) D3] and serum lipids. In this study, we explored the correlation between serum 25(OH) D3 concentrations and serum lipids with a typical sample of the rural population in China.MethodsFace-to-face research was used to gather some basic information. Fasting serum concentrations of 25-(OH) D3, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) tested in the laboratory.ResultsThe mean of serum 25(OH) D3 level was 28.71 ± 29.29 ng/mL. The results showed that the dyslipidemia was strongly associated with gender (P = 0.031), drinking (P = 0.043), high-fat diet intake (P = 0.017), HDL-C (P<0), TG (P<0), body mass index (BMI) (P<0) and serum 25(OH)D3 levels (P = 0.002). There was a positive correlation between serum 25(OH)D3 and HDL-C (P<0) in all groups. The relationship between 25(OH) D3 and LDL-C (P = 0.024) was discovered only in normal lipid group. The multivariable adjusted odds ratio (95%CI) of hypoalphalipoproteinemia/HDL and dyslipidemia by comparing the sufficiency vs. the deficiency serum 25-(OH) D3 level were 0.31 (0.192, 0.499) (P = 0.001) and 0.52 (0.36, 0.73) (P = 0.005), respectively.ConclusionsSerum 25(OH) D3 concentrations were associated with the serum lipids level and the association was different in normal serum lipid group and dyslipidemia group. With the increase of serum 25(OH) D3 levels, the incidence of dyslipidemia decreased.

Abstract:Background Vitamin D (VD) plays an important role in decreasing the risk of adverse events for various metabolic diseases. However, for patients with hyperlipidemia, the relationship between the main VD storage within the body known as serum 25-hydroxy-VD [25(OH)VD] and the risk of all-cause, cardiovascular and malignancies-specific mortality is still unclear. Materials and methods A total of 6740 participants above the age of 20 years with hyperlipidemia who completed the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2016 and were followed up until 2019 were included in the study. The weighted Cox proportional hazards regression model and weighted competing risk regression model were used to evaluate the risk for all-cause, cardiovascular and malignancy-related mortality in relation to the serum 25(OH)VD. The model was adjusted according to age, gender, race, body mass index, lipids status, medication usage, the Charlson comorbidity index and healthy eating index. The last restricted cubic spline (RCS) method was used to present the relationship between hazard ratios (HR) associated with diverse cause-specified modalities and the serum 25(OH)VD levels. Results Serum 25(OH)VD was identified as an independent factor for mortality. Lower serum 25(OH)VD under the threshold of 25.6 and 25.2 ng/ml were significantly associated with a higher risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities, respectively. However, no association was found between malignancy-specific mortality and serum 25(OH)VD. Conclusion Serum 25(OH)VD were identified as an independent factor associated with risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities in patient with hyperlipidemia. Moreover, lower serum 25(OH)VD than 25.6 and 25.2 ng/mL were, respectively, associated with a gradual increase in a risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with hyperlipidemia, and therefore regular monitoring of VD levels and correction of VD deficiency is recommended in those patients.

Abstract:Background: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has long been viewed as a protective factor for cardiovascular health. Yet, higher HDL-C was not necessarily beneficial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between HDL-C levels and intertrochanter bone mineral density. Methods: The study collected the most recent data from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Weighted multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between HDL-C and intertrochanter BMD, and further subgroup analysis and threshold effect analysis were conducted. Finally, the relationship between HDL-C and intertrochanter BMD was analyzed by fitting smooth curves. Results: The study included 3,345 people ranging in age from 50 to 80. HDL-C was discovered to be negatively correlated with intertrochanter BMD (β = -0.03, 95%CI: -0.04, -0.01, P = 0.0002). In subgroup analysis, the negative correlation was found among 60-70-year-olds (β = -0.04, 95%CI: -0.06, -0.02, P = 0.0010), additionally, non-Hispanic whites (β = -0.03, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.01, P = 0.0140), and obese individuals (β = -0.03, 95%CI: -0.05, -0.01, P = 0.0146). The negative correlation, on the other hand, remained significant and consistent across genders, menstruation status, hormone usage, and long-term use of steroids. The relationship between HDL-C and intertrochanter BMD was an inverted U-shaped curve in men and hormone users, with inflection points of 1.01 mmol/L and 1.71 mmol/L, and an U-shaped curve in other Hispanic and premenopausal individuals, with inflection points of 0.96 mmol/L and 1.89 mmol/L. Conclusions: HDL-C was negatively associated with intertrochanter BMD in people over 50 years of age, non-Hispanic whites, and obesity.

Abstract:Background The relationship of serum 25(OH)D levels and hyperlipidemia has not been explored in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing (AFF) occupation. We aimed to explore the impact of serum 25(OH)D levels on lipid profiles in AFF workers, traffic drivers, and miners. Methods Data from 3937 adults aged 18–65 years old with completed information were obtained from the National Health and Examination Survey from 2001 to 2014. Multivariate linear regression models were used to examine the associations between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and HDL-C/LDL-C ratio. Subgroup analyses for AFF workers considered age, sex, BMI, work activity, months worked, and alcohol consumption. Non-linear relationships were explored using curve fitting. Results Serum 25(OH)D levels differed between groups (AFF: 60.0 ± 21.3 nmol/L, drivers: 56.6 ± 22.2 nmol/L, miners: 62.8 ± 22.3 nmol/L). Subgroup analysis of the AFF group showed that participants with serum 25(OH)D ≥50 nmol/L, females, and BMI <30 kg/m 2 demonstrated improved HDL-C levels correlating with higher serum 25(OH)D. Serum 25(OH)D in AFF workers had a reversed U-shaped relationship with TG and TC, and a U-shaped relationship with HDL-C, with HDL-C, with inflection points at 49.5 nmol/L for TG and TC, and 32.6 nmol/L for HDL-C. Conclusions Serum 25(OH)D levels are associated with lipid profiles, and the relationship varies among occupational groups. AFF workers, facing unique occupational challenges, may benefit from maintaining adequate serum 25(OH)D levels to mitigate adverse lipid profiles and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Association Between Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations and Incident Activities of Daily Living Disability: A Longitudinal Community-Based Cohort Study

Abstract:Objectives: A few studies of Western populations have found inconsistent results regarding the associations between vitamin D status and physical function. We explored the association between circulating vitamin D status [plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D] and incident activities of daily living (ADL) disability among Chinese older adults. Design: Community-based longitudinal cohort study. Setting and participants: A total of 2453 men and women (median age 84.0 years) in 7 Chinese longevity areas were included. Measures: Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident ADL, with adjustments for potential sociodemographic, and lifestyle confounders and biomarkers. Because there was a statistically significant interaction between plasma 25(OH)D and sex in relation to incident ADL, men and women were analyzed separately. Results: The median concentrations of plasma 25(OH)D were 46.6 nmol/L and 36.4 nmol/L for men and women, respectively. Compared with the lowest quartile in the fully adjusted model, the HR for incident ADL disability for the highest quartile was 0.55 (95% CI 0.36-0.85) for women; for men, a null association was indicated (HRhighest vs lowest 0.61, 95% CI 0.37-1.00). However, when using the recommended circulating 25(OH)D thresholds by the US Institute of Medicine, those with vitamin D sufficiency (≥50 nmol/L) had better ADL disability prognoses than those with vitamin D deficiency (<30 nmol/L) in both sexes (men HR 0.45, 95% CI 0.28-0.72; women HR 0.58, 95% CI 0.37-0.90). Conclusions and implications: The relationship between plasma 25(OH)D concentration and incident ADL disability was sex-specific among Chinese older adults. However, participants with recommended vitamin D sufficiency may have better disability prognoses in both sexes, suggesting that the recommended 25(OH)D concentration for bone health may extend to functional outcomes such as ADL disability in Chinese older adults.

Abstract:Background: Prediabetes and diabetes are common and serious public health problems, and high blood glucose can lead to serious cardiovascular complications. The purpose of this article was to explore the link between CVH levels and the incidence of prediabetes and diabetes in people over 20 years old, and whether serum vitamin D status could alter this relationship. Materials and methods: Data, from six consecutive cycles of the NHANES database from 2007 to 2018 were combined, eligible participants were aged ≥20 years. After excluding missing data, a total of 19,992 subjects were enrolled in the study. Significant risk factors for prediabetes and diabetes were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Exploring the interaction of VD and CVH on prediabetes and diabetes based on multifactorial regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of prediabetes among all participants was 36.15% and the prevalence of diabetes was 16.39%. CVH and vitamin D levels are influential factors in prediabetes and diabetes, and are negatively associated with the risk of developing prediabetes and diabetes. Compared with normoglycemia, poorer CVH and vitamin D deficiency only had a synergistic multiplicative interaction on the development of diabetes, and no significant interaction was observed for the development of prediabetes. Compared with prediabetes, poorer CVH and vitamin D deficiency still had a synergistic additive interaction on the development of diabetes. Conclusions: Although the cross-sectional study only determine the association and do not prove causality, the current results can be used to prompt people to improve their lifestyle and risk factors to prevent prediabetes or diabetes through higher CVH and adequate Vitamin D.

Abstract:Abstract Background Many studies have shown that lipids play important roles in bone metabolism. However, the association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and bone mineral density (BMD) is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the linear or nonlinear relation between HDL-C levels and BMD and addressed whether the HDL-C levels had the potential values for predicting the risk of osteoporosis or osteopenia. Methods Two researchers independently extracted all information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Participants over 20 years of age with available HDL-C and BMD data were enrolled in the final analysis. The linear relationship between HDL-C levels and BMD was assessed using multivariate linear regression models. Moreover, the nonlinear relationship was also characterized by fitted smoothing curves and generalized additive models. In addition, the odds ratio (OR) for osteopenia and osteoporosis was evaluated with multiple logistic regression models. Results The weighted multivariable linear regression models demonstrated that HDL-C levels displayed an inverse association with BMD, especially among females and subjects aged 30 to 39 or 50 to 59. Moreover, the nonlinear relationship characterized by smooth curve fittings and generalized additive models suggested that (i) HDL-C levels displayed an inverted U-shaped relationship with BMD among women 30 to 39 or over 60 years of age; (ii) HDL-C levels exhibited a U-shaped association with BMD among women 20 to 29 or 50 to 59 years of age. In addition, females with high HDL levels (62-139 mg/dL) had an increased risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Conclusion This study demonstrated that HDL-C levels exhibit an inverse correlation with BMD. Especially in females, clinicians need to be alert to patients with high HDL-C levels, which may indicate an increased risk of osteoporosis or osteopenia. For these patients, close monitoring of BMD and early intervention may be necessary.
