Abstract:Materials that exhibit visible luminescence upon X-ray irradiation show great potential in the medical and industrial fields. Pure organic materials have recently emerged as promising scintillators for X-ray detection and radiography, due to their diversified design, low cost, and facile preparation. However, recent progress in efficient radioluminescence has mainly focused on small molecules, which are inevitably associated with processability and repeatability issues. Here, a concise strategy is proposed to prepare radioluminescent polymers that exhibit multiple emission colors from blue to yellow with high brightness in an amorphous state by the radical copolymerization of negatively charged polyacrylic acid and different positively charged quaternary phosphonium salts. One of the obtained polymers exhibits excellent photostability under a high X-ray irradiation dosage of 27.35 Gy and has a detection limit of 149 nGy s(-1). This performance is superior to that of conventional anthracene-based scintillators. Furthermore, by simply drop-casting a polymer methanol solution on a quartz plate, a transparent scintillator screen was successfully fabricated for X-ray imaging with a resolution of 8.7 line pairs mm(-1). The pure organic phosphorescent polymers with a highly efficient radioluminescence were demonstrated for the first time, and the strategy reported herein offers a promising pathway to expand the application range of amorphous organic scintillators.

Abstract:AbstractThe ability to harness charges and spins for control of organic excitonic states is critical in developing high‐performance organic luminophores and optoelectronic devices. Here we report a facile strategy to efficiently manipulate the electronic energy states of various organic phosphors by coupling them with inorganic lanthanide nanocrystals. We show that the metallic atoms exposed on the nanocrystal surface can introduce strong coupling effects to 9‐(4‐ethoxy‐6‐phenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole (OCzT) and some organic chromophores with carbazole functional groups when the organics are approaching the nanocrystals. This unconventional organic–inorganic hybridization enables a nearly 100 % conversion of the singlet excitation to fast charge transfer luminescence that does not exist in pristine organics, which broadens the utility of organic phosphors in hybrid systems.

Abstract:Organic scintillators, materials with the ability to exhibit luminescence when exposed to X-rays, have aroused increasing interest in recent years. However, the enhancement of radioluminescence and improving X-ray absorption of organic scintillators lie in the inherent dilemma, due to the waste of triplet excitons and weak X-ray absorption during scintillation. Here, we employ halogenated thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials to improve the triplet exciton utilization and X-ray absorption simultaneously, generating efficient scintillation with a low detection limit, which is one order of magnitude lower than the dosage for X-ray medical diagnostics. Through experimental study and theoretical calculation, we reveal the positive role of X-ray absorption, quantum yields of prompt fluorescence, and intersystem crossing in promoting the radioluminescence intensity. This finding offers an opportunity to design diverse types of organic scintillators and expands the applications of thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

Abstract:A series of organic scintillators are designed and synthesized to exhibit both TADF and RTP features in the aggregated state. These materials possessing dual triplet exciton‐harvesting channels demonstrate clear X‐ray imaging in both single‐molecule level and aggregated state, accompanied by a high spatial resolution of 15.0 lp mm−1. Organic scintillators have recently gained considerable attentions in X‐ray detection for their potential applications in biomedical radiograph and security inspection. However, the weak X‐ray absorption and/or inefficient exciton utilization have limited the development and commercialization of organic scintillators. Currently, high‐performance X‐ray organic scintillators are scarce and organic scintillators with dual triplet‐harvesting channels have not been explored before. Here, we develop several proof‐of‐concept sulfone‐based organic molecules, C1–C7, using different alkoxy chains to manipulate molecular packing mode. These materials exhibit dual triplet‐harvesting channels of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in aggregated state. Inspiringly, these molecules display distinct radioluminescence under the X‐ray stimulation. Among them, C6 behaves the highest light yield of 16,558 photons MeV−1. Moreover, clear X‐ray images are demonstrated in both aggregated state and single‐molecule level. High spatial resolutions of 15.0 and 10.6 line pairs per millimeter (lp mm−1) are achieved for rigid and flexible scintillator screens, exceeding most reported organic and conventional inorganic scintillators. These results highlight the great potential of organic molecules with TADF and RTP nature for efficient X‐ray scintillation and imaging.

Abstract:Efficient and fast scintillators are in high demand in a variety of fields, such as medical diagnostics, scientific instruments and high-energy physics. However, the trade-off between high scintillation efficiency and fast timing properties is a common challenge facing almost all scintillators. To overcome this limitation, we have developed a strategy for organic scintillators by directing all hot excitons into fast singlet emission states without involving the lowest triplet states. Our scintillator, 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)ethylene, shows an ultrafast radiative lifetime of 1.79 ns and a light yield of ∼ 34,600 photons per MeV, exhibiting an excellent combination of high light yield and short decay time. Our work provides a method to design efficient and ultrafast scintillators, and paves the way towards exciting applications for ultrafast detection and imaging.

Abstract:The development of organic phosphorescent scintillators with high exciton utilization efficiency has attracted significant attention but remains a difficult challenge because of the inherent spin-forbidden feature of X-ray-induced triplet excitons. Herein, a design strategy is proposed to develop organic phosphorescent scintillators through thermally activated exciton release to convert stabilized spin-forbidden triplet excitons to spin-allowed singlet excitons, which enables singlet exciton-dominated multi-mode emission simultaneously from the lowest singlet, triplet, and stabilized triplet states. The resultant scintillators demonstrate a maximum photoluminescence efficiency of 65.8% and a minimum X-ray radiation detection limit of 110 nGy s-1; this allows efficient radiography imaging with a spatial resolution of ≈10.0 lp mm-1. This study advances the fundamental understanding of exciton dynamics under X-ray excitation, significantly broadening the practical use of phosphorescent materials for safety-critical industries and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Materials that exhibit X-ray-excited luminescence have great potential in radiation detection, security inspection, biomedical applications and X-ray astronomy<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="/articles/s41566-020-00744-0#ref-CR5">5</a>. However, high-performance materials are almost exclusively limited to ceramic scintillators, which are typically prepared under high temperatures<a href="/articles/s41566-020-00744-0#ref-CR6">6</a>. Herein we report metal-free organic phosphors based on a molecular design that supports efficient triplet exciton harvesting to enhance radioluminescence. These organic scintillators exhibit a detection limit of 33 nGy s–1, which is 167 times lower than the standard dosage for X-ray medical examination and we demonstrate their potential application in X-ray radiography. These findings provide a fundamental design principle and new route for the creation of promising alternatives to incumbent inorganic scintillators. Furthermore, they offer new opportunities for development of flexible, stretchable X-ray detectors and imagers for non-destructive radiography testing and medical imaging.

Abstract:X-ray scintillators have drawn extensive attention since their significant applications in science research and daily life. However, most commercial scintillators are based on expensive mechanically rigid inorganic crystalline arrays, which normally bear long-lived afterglow that reduce the resolution in dynamic X-ray monitoring, while traditional organic scintillators have low X-ray absorbance and inefficient exciton utilization. Herein, we report a series of readily-obtained pure-organic single-component scintillators with halogen-enhanced X-ray absorbance, high fluorescence quantum yield and short decay time. They can be easily prepared into flexible and transparent scintillating imaging films with high light yield (approaching 20000 photons MeV-1) and resolution (above 20 line pairs/mm) that among the highest level of organic scintillators reported so far.

Abstract:Organic scintillators that efficiently generate bright triplet excitons are of critical importance for high-performance X-ray-excited luminescence in radiation detection. However, the nature of triplet-singlet spin-forbidden transitions in these materials often result in long-lived phosphorescence, which is undesirable for ultrafast X-ray detection and imaging. Here we demonstrate that the effect of hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) excited states enables organic scintillators to exhibit highly efficient and fast radioluminescence (RL) in response to X-ray irradiation. Our experimental and theoretical investigation shows that the oxidized 1,8-naphthalimide-phenothiazine dyad (OMNI-PTZ 2) with HLCT-excited states has an enhanced overlap integral of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) on MNI π-orbitals, and moderate donor–acceptor electron interactions. As a result, the RL of these crystals exhibits a 61-fold increase and its monoexponential decay lifetime is three orders of magnitude faster compared to its corresponding thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule MNI-PTZ 1. We further demonstrate the practical utility of the OMNI-PTZ 2 (G) in high-performance X-ray detection and imaging, achieving an X-ray dose sensitivity of 97 nGy s−1 and an exceptional spatial resolution of 20 lp/mm. Our study provides a promising molecular design principle for utilizing triplet excitons to develop high-efficiency and fast X-ray scintillators for the development of next-generation flexible and stretchable X-ray imaging detectors.

Abstract:An aromatic moiety-free strategy is proposed for the effective excited state manipulation of the neutral luminescent manganese( II ) halide. Interestingly, compared to the traditional monodentate ligand-based manganese( II ) complexes, a dramatic enhancement of photoluminescent quantum yield of 0.413 is achieved by incorporating tri(pyrrolidin-1-yl)phosphine oxide (TPPO) as a new ligand without any aromatic moiety into the manganese( II ) complex. The designed aromatic moiety-free neutral luminescent manganese( II ) bromide ( TPPOMnBr 2 ) featuring an intense green emission (512 nm) and a short emission lifetime (0.564 ms) is employed to realize efficient X-ray imaging with a high spatial resolution value of 11.3 lp mm −1 and a low detection limit of 34.95 nGy s −1 , making it a promising candidate for high-performance X-ray detection in the future.

Abstract:A combination of rigid and flexible is proposed host‐guest doping strategies to achieve efficient purely organic phosphorescent scintillation. Under UV‐light excitation, the phosphorescence efficiency of the doped crystal reaches up to 99.4%. Compared with single‐component crystals, the doped crystals display markedly enhanced radioluminescence because of the confinement of isolated chromophores and the effective harvesting of triplet excitons, which benefits potential applications in X‐ray radiography. Scintillators have attracted significant attention due to their wide‐ranging applications in both industrial and medical fields. However, one of the ongoing challenges is the efficient utilization of triplet excitons to achieve high radioluminescence efficiency. Here, a series of purely organic phosphors is presented for X‐ray scintillation, employing a combined rigid and flexible host‐guest doping strategy. The doped crystals exhibit a remarkable maximum phosphorescence efficiency of 99.4% under UV excitation. Furthermore, upon X‐ray irradiation, the radioluminescence intensities of the doped phosphors are markedly higher compared to their single‐component crystal counterparts. Through systematic investigations, it is demonstrated the crucial role of confining isolated chromophores in enhancing scintillation efficiency. Additionally, a transparent scintillator screen fabricated with the doped phosphor exhibits excellent X‐ray imaging performance, achieving a high spatial resolution of 18.0 lp mm−1. This work not only offers valuable insights into suppressing non‐radiative transitions of triplet excitons during scintillation but also opens a new avenue for designing highly efficient purely organic phosphorescent scintillators.

Abstract:Scintillators with high X-ray imaging performance are highly desirable. Traditional inorganic scintillators are restricted by the rigorous preparation conditions and easy deliquescence, while organic scintillators suffered from a low X-ray absorption coefficient and low energy resolution. Metal–organic scintillators were developed to overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages, but they were still limited by the inherent low X-ray attenuation performance of organic ligands and the low energy transfer efficiency between the absorption center and the luminescent center. In this work, two one-dimensional linear lanthanide-based scintillating metal–organic coordination polymers (CPs) were developed by a simple and controllable one-step solvothermal method. High-Z lanthanide atoms could efficiently transform the high-energy X-ray to characteristic visible light via the energy bridge effect of organic ligands, which improved the conversion efficiency to enhance light emission. To evaluate the X-ray imaging performance, scintillating CPs were prepared into thin films, which exhibited relatively high spatial resolution. Considering the good X-ray irradiation stability and humidity stability, the lanthanide scintillating CPs are believed to be very promising materials for X-ray imaging.

Abstract:X‐ray scintillators, materials that convert high‐energy radiation into detectable light in the ultraviolet to visible spectrum, are widely used in industrial and medical applications. Organic and organic‐inorganic hybrid systems have emerged as promising alternatives for X‐ray detection and imaging due to their mechanical flexibility, lightweight, tunable excited states, and solution processability for large‐scale fabrication. However, these systems often suffer from weak X‐ray absorption and insufficient exciton utilization, which seriously affects their scintillation performance, limiting their potential for broader application and commercialization. This review highlights recent advances in molecular engineering for developing high‐performance X‐ray scintillators. It focuses on molecular design principles, such as the heavy atom effect, donor‐acceptor/host‐guest strategies, hydrogen/halogen bonding, molecular sensitization, and crystal packing, for enhancing scintillation performance. By leveraging these approaches, researchers have made significant strides in improving X‐ray scintillation efficiency and advancing the potential of these materials for commercial applications.

Stable Xanthene Radicals and Their Heavy Chalcogen Analogues Showing Tunable Doublet Emission from Green to Near‐infrared

Abstract:Organic luminescent radicals, unlike traditional closed-shell fluorescent emitters, exhibit distinct luminescence mechanisms, offering promising potential for optoelectronic devices. To date, stable luminescent radicals have predominantly been confined to polychlorinated triphenylmethyl radicals, underscoring the need for new platforms to expand their emission spectra. In this study, we report the synthesis of stable 9-aryl-substituted xanthene radicals and their heavy chalcogen analogues (1a-c and 2a-c), which exhibited excellent chemical stability and emission ranging from green to near-infrared (527~714 nm). Notably, the selenium-substituted radical (1c) demonstrates a significantly enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield of 41% when doped into its precursor solid. Additionally, the introduction of methoxyphenyl groups has largely enhanced the stability of the radical, showcasing an excellent photostability with the longest half-life of around 1792 h. The high internal quantum efficiency of up to 81% was further validated in organic light-emitting diode. This study introduces a novel class of stable carbon-centered radicals with high tunability and functionality for photoelectric applications.

Abstract:The stable and luminescent neutral organic radicals have been attractive molecular building blocks for material science with their doublet state nature and luminescent feature, but an existing-problem caused by aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) is being counted as a priority in materials application. Here, we reported the solid-state luminescent properties of radical (4-N-carbazolyl-2,6-dichlorophenyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM-1Cz) by precisely doping it into its precursor (4-N-carbazolyl-2,6-dichlorophenyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methane (HTTM-1Cz) matrix. As a result, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the 2.5 wt% radical-doped film was up to 38.4%. More importantly, 1 wt% radical-doped crystals showed intense PLQY of 79.0% with elongated fluorescence lifetime of 50.4 ns and 12.5-fold longer photostability than that in n-hexane solution of pure TTM-1Cz. Furthermore, external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the 2.5 wt% radical-doped OLED device reached to 10.5% with deep red emission, which is one of the highest values for TTM-1Cz radical-based OLEDs.

Abstract:The expanding applications of X-ray scintillation across various areas, from healthcare to security detection call for the development of new-generation scintillators that offer enhanced sensitivity, efficiency, and versatility. Here, we report for the first time the use of organic metal halide complexes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) for X-ray scintillation, which can be facilely synthesized and processed in the solution phase. By reacting an AIE organic molecule, 4-(4-(diphenylamino) phenyl)-1-(propyl)-pyridinium (TPA-PD) with zinc chloride (ZnCl2) in solution at room temperature, an organic metal halide complex, (TPA-PD)2ZnCl2, is produced with a high synthetic yield of 87%. Optical and radioluminescence characterizations find that (TPA-PD)2ZnCl2 exhibits bluish-green photoluminescence and radioluminescence peaked at around 450 nm, with a photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of 65%, and an absolute light yield of 13,423 Photon/MeV. Moreover, short photoluminescence and radioluminescence decay lifetimes are recorded at 1.81 ns and 5.24 ns, respectively. For X-ray scintillation, an excellent response dose-response linearity and a low limit of detection of 80.23 nGyairS-1 are obtained for (TPA-PD)2ZnCl2. By taking advantage of the high X-ray absorption of metal halides and fast radioluminescence of AIE molecules, our design of covalently bonded organic metal halide complexes opens up new opportunities for the development of high-performance solution-processable scintillators.

Abstract:X-ray detection, which plays an important role in medical and industrial fields, usually relies on inorganic scintillators to convert X-rays to visible photons; although several high-quantum-yield fluorescent molecules have been tested as scintillators, they are generally less efficient. High-energy radiation can ionize molecules and create secondary electrons and ions. As a result, a high fraction of triplet states is generated, which act as scintillation loss channels. Here we found that X-ray-induced triplet excitons can be exploited for emission through very rapid, thermally activated up-conversion. We report scintillators based on three thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules with different emission bands, which showed significantly higher efficiency than conventional anthracene-based scintillators. X-ray imaging with 16.6 line pairs mm−1 resolution was also demonstrated. These results highlight the importance of efficient and prompt harvesting of triplet excitons for efficient X-ray scintillation and radiation detection.

Abstract:Luminescent metal halides have been exploited as a new class of X-ray scintillators for security checks, nondestructive inspection, and medical imaging. However, the charge traps and hydrolysis vulnerability are always detrimental to the three-dimensional ionic structural scintillators. Here, the two zero-dimensional organic-manganese(II) halide coordination complexes 1-Cl and 2-Br were synthesized for improvements in X-ray scintillation. The introduction of a polarized phosphine oxide can help to increase the stabilities, especially the self-absorption-free merits of these Mn-based hybrids. The X-ray dosage rate detection limits reached up to 3.90 and 0.81 μGyair/s for 1-Cl and 2-Br, respectively, superior to the medical diagnostic standard of 5.50 μGyair/s. The fabricated scintillation films were applied to radioactive imaging with high spatial resolutions of 8.0 and 10.0 lp/mm, respectively, holding promise for use in diagnostic X-ray medical imaging.
Through‐Space Charge‐Transfer Organogold(III) Complexes Enable High‐Performance X‐ray Scintillation and Imaging

Abstract:Organic scintillators have recently attracted growing attention for X-ray detection in industrial and medical applications. However, these materials still face critical obstacles of low attenuation efficiency and/or inefficient triplet exciton utilization. Here we developed a new category of organogold(III) complexes, Tp-Au-1 and Tp-Au-2, through adopting a through-space interaction motif to realize high X-ray attenuation efficiency and efficient harvesting of triplet excitons for emission. Thanks to the efficient through-space charge transfer process, this panel of complexes achieved higher photoluminescence quantum yield and shorter radiative lifetimes compared with the through-bond reference complexes. Inspiringly, these organogold(III) complexes exhibited polarity-dependent emission origins: thermally activated delayed fluorescence and/or phosphorescence. Under X-ray irradiation, Tp-Au-2 manifested intense radioluminescence together with a record-high scintillation light yield of 77,600 photons MeV-1 for organic scintillators. The resulting scintillator screens demonstrated high-quality X-ray imaging with >16.0 line pairs mm–1 spatial resolution, outstripping most organic and inorganic scintillators. This finding provides a feasible strategy for the design of superior organic X-ray scintillators.
