Abstract:Abstract This study was desgined to find a reliable and convenient indicator (a modified Schirmer test) to improve the accuracy of assessing tear secretion and diagnosing dry eye. This is a prospective continuous study on 180 volunteers. Schirmer test I without anesthesia was performed once on both eyes to determine the value of normal Schirmer test. The values of tear secretion were recorded in each minute. Examined individuals also underwent other examinations: the standard patient evaluation of eye dryness (SPEED), the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), fluorescein stain, tear film breakup time (BUT), and Meibomian gland (MG)grading. The participants were divided into two groups: dry eye (DE) groupand non-dry eye (ND) group. The mean age was 39.41±14.05 years in DE group and 37.62±13.17 in ND group. The value of 2-minute Schirmer test, rear 3-minute Schirmer test, rear 4-minute Schirmer test and 5-minute Schirmer test was 5.36±4.63, 5.57±2.11, 7.21±4.13 and 10.93±6.30 respectively in DE group. And these indicators was 8.25±6.80, 2.73±2.31, 7.36±3.42, 11.84±6.16 in ND group. The rear 4-minute ST has significant correlation with OSDI and SPEED in DE group (r =-0.242/-0.183) and in ND gruop(r =-0.316 /-0.373). Meanwhile, rear 4-minute ST had stronger connection with fBUT(r =0.159) and MG (r =-0.162) in DE gruop. And rear 4-minute ST also had higher accuracy in diagnosing severe dry eye and borderline dry eye.The rear 4-minute Schirmer test may be a supplement indicator in assessing tear secretion and diagnosing dry eye.
Appropriateness of Questionnaires for the Diagnosis and Monitoring Treatment of Dry Eye Disease

Abstract:Objectives: If questionnaires contributing to the diagnosis of dry eye disease are to be recommended as alternatives to existing questionnaires, they must be comparable, with similar repeatability and treatment sensitivity. Comparability was thus examined for three common dry eye questionnaires along with identifying the individual questions that most strongly predicted overall scores. Methods: Anonymised data (n = 329) collected via the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), 5-item Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5) and Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE) questionnaires (including responses to individual questions) from consenting patients were drawn from real-world dry eye clinics/registries in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand; at follow-up, normalised changes were evaluated in 54 of these patients. Treatment data were also analysed from a 6-month, randomised controlled trial assessing artificial tear supplement treatments with 43 responders and 13 non-responders to treatment identified. The questions extracted from the OSDI which form the abbreviated 6-item OSDI were also analysed. Results: The agreement between the questionnaires ranged from r = 0.577 to 0.754 (all p < 0.001). For the OSDI, three questions accounted for 89.1% of the variability in the total score. The correlation between the OSDI and OSDI-6 was r = 0.939, p < 0.001. For the DEQ-5, two questions accounted for 88.5% of the variance in the total score. Normalised treatment changes were also only moderately correlated between the questionnaires (r = 0.441 to 0.595, p < 0.01). For non-responders, variability was 7.4% with both OSDI and OSDI-6, 9.7% with DEQ-5, 12.1% with SANDE-frequency and 11.9% with SANDE-severity scale. For responders, improvement with drops was detected with a 19.1% change in OSDI, 20.2% in OSDI-6, 20.9% in DEQ-5, and 27.5%/23.6% in SANDE-frequency/severity scales. Conclusions: Existing commonly used dry eye questionnaire scores do not show high levels of correlation. The OSDI was the least variable of the questionnaires and while displaying a slightly lower treatment effect than either the DEQ or SANDE, it was more sensitive to detection of a treatment effect. The quicker-to-complete OSDI-6 exhibited essentially the same outcome as the OSDI, with similar variability and treatment sensitivity.

Psychometric validation of the Chinese version of the dry eye-related quality-of-life score questionnaire

Abstract:Aim: To psychometrically validate the Chinese version of the dry eye-related quality-of-life score questionnaire (DEQS-CHN) among Chinese patients with dry eye. Methods: This study involved 231 participants, including 191 with dry eye disease (DED) comprising the dry eye disease group, and 40 healthy participants forming the control group. Participants were required to complete the DEQS-CHN, and Chinese dry eye questionnaire and undergo clinical tests including the fluorescein breakup time (FBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and Schirmer I test. To assess the internal consistency and retest reliability, Cronbach's α and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were employed. Content validity was assessed by item-level content validity index (ICV) and an average scale-level content validity index (S-CVI/Ave). Construct validity was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis. The concurrent validity was assessed by calculating correlations between DEQS-CHN and Chinese dry eye questionnaire. Discriminative validity was evaluated through non-parametric tests, with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve serving as conclusive indicators of the questionnaire's distinguishing capability. Results: The Cronbach's α coefficients for frequency and degree of ocular symptoms, impact on daily life, and summary score were 0.736, 0.704, 0.811, 0.818, 0.861, and 0.860, respectively, and the ICC were 0.611, 0.677, 0.715, 0.769, 0.711, and 0.779, respectively. All I-CVI scores ranged from 0.833 to 1.000, with an S-CVI/Ave of 0.956. Confirmatory factor analysis results exhibited a well-fitting model consistent with the original questionnaire [χ 2/df=2.653, incremental fit index (IFI)=0.924, comparative fit index (CFI)=0.924, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI)=0.909, and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.065]. There was a moderate positive correlation between the DEQS-CHN and the Chinese dry eye questionnaire (r 2=0.588). The dry eye group demonstrated significantly higher scores compared to the control group, and the area under the curve (AUC) value was 0.8092. Conclusion: The DEQS-CHN has been demonstrated as a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the impact of dry eye disease on the quality of life among Chinese individuals with DED.
Validation and reliability of the Munich Shoulder Questionnaire for Turkish patients with shoulder dysfunction

Abstract:IntroductionShoulder dysfunction is one of the most important upper extremity problems that limit the quality of life of individuals. Munich Shoulder Questionnaire (MSQ) is a self-assessment tool that allows an easy follow-up and evaluation for clinicians. The aim of this study was to describe the process applied to translate MSQ into Turkish and to test its validity and reliability.MethodsThe questionnaire involves socio-demographic data, as well as objective and subjective items for shoulder dysfunction. The study investigated 180 patients with shoulder dysfunction. Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess internal consistency. Test-retest reliability was evaluated by the intra-class correlation coefficient. Pearson’s correlation coefficient served to examine the convergent validity. The SPSS 23.0 software was used for the statistical analysis.ResultsThe patients’ average age equalled 44.3 ± 11.6 years. In most cases (76.7%), the diagnosis was shoulder impingement syndrome. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the MSQ objective and subjective sections were 0.73 and 0.96, respectively. The MSQ total score was positively correlated with the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire total score (r = 0.70; p < 0.01) and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index total score (r = 0.65; p < 0.01).ConclusionsThe Turkish version of MSQ is a valid, reliable, and responsive instrument for evaluating shoulder dysfunctions. In addition, MSQ-Turkish is satisfactory for evaluating shoulder dysfunctions and its use is recommended to follow up conservative, manipulative, and surgical treatments.
Correlation and Level of Agreement between the Ocular Surface Disease Index and the Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye Questionnaires: A Survey-Based Study

Abstract:The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) is the most frequently used dry eye disease (DED) questionnaire, and the Symptom Assessment iN Dry Eye (SANDE) is the simplest and quickest to apply. We analyze the correlation and level of agreement between these two questionnaires in a large DED heterogeneous population to evaluate their performance and potential interchangeability. Prospective, multicenter longitudinal survey-based study performed on patients diagnosed with DED by 99 ophthalmologists from 20/32 Mexican states. Questionnaires were applied in two consecutive visits to analyze the correlation between OSDI and SANDE to evaluate patients with DED clinically. Level of agreement was evaluated with Bland-Altman analysis, and internal consistency of instruments was evaluated individually and combined with Cronbach's alpha index. 3421 patients studied: 1996 (58.3%) women and 1425 (41.7%) men, aged 49.5 ± 15.4 years; 995 (29.1%) patients had aqueous-deficient, 1086 (31.7%) evaporative, and 1340 (39.2%) mixed DED subtypes. Normalized baseline scores were 53.7 (OSDI) and 54.1 (SANDE). After 36.3 ± 24.4 days between visits, scores were reduced to 25.2 (OSDI) and 21.8 (SANDE) points ( p < .001). A positive correlation between questionnaires was found at baseline ( R = 0.592; p < .001), follow-up ( R = 0.543; p < .001) and change between visits ( R = 0.630; p < .001). Using both questionnaires together improved the overall reliability of symptom evaluation at baseline (α = 0.7), follow-up (α = 0.7), and both (α = 0.7), compared to individual application (OSDI α = 0.5, SANDE α = 0.6)—the same improvements applied to all DED subtypes. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a differential bias of -0.41% at baseline and +3.6% at follow-up visits between OSDI and SANDE. We validated the correlation (high precision) between questionnaires in a large-scale population, demonstrating improved reliability (high accuracy) in evaluating DED when used together, challenging their interchangeable use. These results open a venue to improve recommendations toward a more precise and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of DED by using OSDI and SANDE concurrently.

Sensitivity and specificity of a screening questionnaire for dry eye

Abstract:We developed a Dry Eye Screening Questionnaire for the Dry Eye Epidemiology Projects (DEEP), a proposed large epidemiologic study. All persons who screen positive and a small sample of those who screen negative are to be invited for a diagnostic examination. Containing 19 questions, of which only 14 were used in the analysis, the questionnaire takes only a few minutes to administer on the telephone. To construct a discriminator function and thus a ROC curve, we used stepwise multiple regression on screening responses from a clinic series of 77 cases and 79 controls. Stepwise regression may incorporate into the predictor equation variables whose relation to the predicted is only accidental. Further, misclassification rates are underestimated by the resubstitution method, in which the proportion misclassified is obtained from the same dataset in which the discriminator function was fitted. To counter these problems, we randomly divided the data in half. We chose as predictors only those variables (Dry and Irritated) selected by stepwise regression in both data halves. We estimated unbiased misclassification rates using the unbiased test set method, in which the discriminator is fitted in one data half, and misclassification rates are calculated in the other half. Comparison of ROC curves arising from resubstitution and test set estimates indicates that resubstitution bias in misclassification rate estimation is negligible in our data. A resubstitution estimate made on the entire data is thus preferred. The resulting sensitivity/specificity values are reasonably high (e.g., 60%/94%), suggesting that the questionnaire will be a useful screening tool in the DEEP study. A second discriminator using the sum of all 14 responses is similar in its misclassification characteristics to the first discriminator. A second potentially significant error, arising from applying results from a clinical series to a general population, will be investigated as survey results in DEEP become available.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the Chinese translation version of OSDI-6 (C-OSDI-6) using a virtual set-up questionnaire for dry eye disease. A total of 270 participants (136 males, 50.4% and 134 females, 49.6%) with a mean age of 28.22 ± 9.01 years were assessed, diagnosed under the criteria put forth by Dry Eye Workshop completed the Chinese translated version of the OSDI-12 questionnaire (C-OSDI-12). Validity and psychometric properties were analyzed using the study data on the selected items (a new approach called virtual validation). The six items were extracted from the C-OSDI-12 as suggested by the authors of OSDI-6 and compared. The total scores of C-OSDI-12 and C-OSDI-6 were 30.27 ± 13.19 and 6.95 ± 3.53, respectively. Significant reliability was found between the total C-OSDI-6 score and the total C-OSDI-12 score (r = 0.865, p < 0.001). Infits and outfits of the C-OSDI-6 were between 1.26 and 0.78.The C-OSDI-6 proved valid and psychometrically responsive in Chinese adult dry eye participants. The findings of this virtual validation study need to be confirmed in a longitudinal validation study on real-world use.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Reliability, and Validity of the Turkish Sensory Responsiveness Questionnaire

Abstract:Abstract Importance: Sensory processing difficulties are commonly seen in people with mental disorders. However, no questionnaires specific to Turkish culture are available for people with mental disorders. Objective: To examine the cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity of the Turkish Sensory Responsiveness Questionnaire (SRQ). Design: Causal comparative groups design. Setting: Homes, clinics, hospitals, and therapy practices in Turkey. Participants: A total of 913 participants, of whom 529 were participants ages 18–60 yr with mental disorders. Outcomes and Measures: The cross-cultural adaptation and translation procedures were conducted following Beaton’s guidelines. Internal consistency was examined with Cronbach’s α. Criterion-related validity of the SRQ was determined with the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile using construct validity and was examined by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 23) and AMOS (Version 24.0). Results: In CFA, model fit indices showed an acceptable fit. Test–retest reliability was excellent for the hedonic and avoidance subfactor scores and for the total score (intraclass correlation coefficients = .973, .988, and .974, respectively). Internal consistency was high for the hedonic subfactor (.812) and the avoidance subfactor (.815). Participants with bipolar disorder had the highest scores on the hedonic subfactor, whereas those with schizophrenia had the highest scores on the avoidance subfactor. Conclusions and Relevance: The 36-item SRQ is reliable and valid for analyzing the sensory processing abilities of adults in the Turkish population. Plain-Language Summary: People with mental disorders commonly have difficulties with sensory processing. No sensory responsiveness questionnaire specific to the Turkish population or culture is available for people with mental disorders. This study shows that the current form of the Turkish Sensory Responsiveness Questionnaire can contribute to understanding the sensory processing abilities of Turkish people with and without mental disorders.

Correlation Evaluation Between Questionnaire and Clinical Examination in Dry Eye

Abstract:Background There are two types of different questionnaires in dry eye diagnosis.But the associations about two questionnaires or questionnaire and clinical examination are still unclear.To effectively quantize the symptoms is helpful for a correct diagnosis of dry eye disease. Objective This survey was to evaluate the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) and Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI) questionnaire for the diagnosis of dry eye and investigate the correlation between the clinical examinations and questionnaires. Methods A perspective cohort study was designed.Sixty-six patients were enrolled in this study.This study was approved by the Ethic Committee of Peking University First Hospital,and written informed consent was obtained from each subject before any ocular examination.SPEED-based and OSDI-based questionnaires were used to score the dry eye symptom and grouped according to severity of complains.Corneal fluorescence staining,tear film breakup time(BUT),Schirmer I test and tear film interferometry were performed in all patients.The correlations between two questionnaires scores and their association with clinical examinations were evaluated. Results The negative correlations were found between the SPEED-based score or OSDI-based score with BUT value(r=0.390,P=0.001 ;r=-0.395,P=0.001 ),but no significant correlations were seen between the SPEED-based score or OSDI-based score with Schirmer test( r=-0.081,P=0.515; r=-0.080,P=0.525)and tear film interferometry score(r=0.158,P=0.204;r=0.219,P=0.077).The BUT was significantly prolonged in mild symptom group compared with serious group(t=2.339,P=0.022),but no significant difference was seen in Schirmer Ⅰ test and tear film interferometry scores using SPEED-based questionnaire ( t =0.404,P =0.687 ; t =- 0.947,P =0.347 ) ; while the positive fluorescence staining rate between two groups was significantly different (x2 =0.164,P =0.685 ).When using OSDI-based questionnaire,significant difference in BUT was seen among mild,moderate and serious symptom groups ( F =11.871,P =0.000 ),and BUT in mild symptom group was delayed in comparison with moderat and serious groups( P=0.000,0.000).No significant differences were found in Schirmer Ⅰ test,tear film interferometry scores and fluorescence staining rate among three groups(F=1.432,P =0.246; F =2.799,P =0.068; x2 =6.026,P =0.050).SPEED score showed a positive correlation with OSDI score ( r =0.697,P =0.000 ). Conclusions Both OSDI and SPEED are effective tools for the evaluation of symptoms of dry eye.The two types of questionnaires are consistent in symptoms evaluation.
Turkish Version of the Psychotropic Related Sexual Dysfunction Questionnaire (PRSEXDQ-T): Validity and Reliability in Patients Using Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor

Abstract:Objective: Sexual dysfunctions (SD) are very common in patients with psychiatric disorders and may be due to the side effects of the disease or medications used. Current scales cannot distinguish whether SDs are due to psychiatric illness or medications use. The Psychotropic Associated Sexual Dysfunction Questionnaire (PRSexDQ) is a customized scale for screening SD due to drug use. Our aim is to conduct a validity and reliability study of PRSexDQ in patients using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Method: One hundred patients who applied to psychiatry outpatient clinic and received SSRI treatment for at least 1 month were included in the study. These patients were evaluated by a psychiatrist, and completed the PRSexDQ-T, Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX), Golombok Rust Inventory Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS). Result: The Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was calculated as 0.906 for the analysis performed to evaluate the internal consistency of the PRSexDQ-T. In the item-total score analysis, the correlation of all items with the total score was found to be quite high (above 0.7). Correlation coefficients were found between 0.939 and 0.985, which was used to determine the test-retest correlation for each item, and all values were statistically significant (p<0.01). In the Pearson correlation analysis performed for validity analysis, a large positive correlation was found between PRSexDQ-T and ASEX and GRISS male-female total and subscale scores. Conclusion: The Turkish version of PRSexDQ is a valid and reliable measurement tool in the sample of patients using SSRIs to evaluate the level of sexual dysfunction.
The Turkish version of the Skin Tear Knowledge Assessment Instrument (OASES): Validity and reliability study

Abstract:This study was conducted to adapt the Skin Tear Knowledge Assessment Instrument (OASES) into Turkish and to verify its validity and reliability. This study was conducted on 314 nurses in Türkiye between November 2023 and February 2024 to test the psychometric properties of OASES. The instrument consists of 20 items clustered into six domains. The cultural adaptation process was carried out according to the International Testing Commission guidelines: Turkish translation, expert panel, content validity, translation back to English, preliminary study and the final version of the instrument. To check the validity of the multiple-choice test, item difficulty and discriminating index were analysed. The reliability of the instrument was evaluated to the retest 14 days after the first test. Scale level content validity by 11 experts in wound care was 0,97 (I-CVI = 0.8-1.0). In the item analysed of the OASES, the item difficulty index was 0,51 (p-value = 0.34-0.76) and the discriminating index was 0.40 (D-value = 0.26-0.51). The 2-week test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient of the overall instrument was 0.90 (95% CI = 0.79-0.95). The Turkish version of OASES is a valid and reliable measurement instrument to evaluate nurses' knowledge levels regarding skin tears with acceptable psychometric properties. It can be applied in nursing education, research and practice to evaluate the knowledge of Turkish speaking nurses about skin tears.
Cross-cultural adaptation of the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Index for Turkish-speaking patients with thoracic outlet syndrome

Abstract:Background/aim: Considering that there is no specifically designed scale to measure quality of life (QoL) and level of functioning among Turkish-speaking patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), the aim of this study was to adapt the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Index (TOSI) to the Turkish language (TOSI-TR) and analyze its psychometric properties in patients with TOS. Materials and methods: Thirty-nine patients with symptomatic TOS were included in the study. The participants were assessed using the following measures: the QuickDASH, the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC), and a visual analog scale (VAS). The psychometric properties of the TOSI-TR were examined in terms of test-retest reliability, construct validity, convergent validity, and feasibility. Results: The ICC2,1 of the TOSI-TR was 0.949 (95% CI: 0.903-0.973). The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was found to be 0.716 with a significant result for Bartlett's sphericity test (p < 0.001). The TOSI-TR had a one-factor solution explaining 74.05% of the total variance. There was a significant correlation between TOSI-TR scores and QuickDASH (r = 0.762, p < 0.001), WORC (r =0.794, p < 0.001), and VAS (r = 0.663, p < 0.001) scores. The WORC and VAS scores were significant determinants of the TOSI-TR score, explaining 65.3% of the variance. There were no floor or ceiling effects. Conclusion: The TOSI-TR is a reliable, valid, and feasible questionnaire for the QoL and functional status in Turkish-speaking patients with TOS. We recommend this 15-item scale for optimal assessment in patients with TOS.

Abstract:Objective: The Sinus and Nasal Quality of Life (QoL) Survey (SN-5) is a valid questionnaire that evaluates the QoL of the pediatric population associated with sinonasal diseases and symptoms. The aims of this study were to translate the SN-5 test to Turkish language (SN-5t), evaluate the internal consistency of the test and test-retest reliability and validate the translation for further use in studies in Turkish language.Methods: In this prospective study, 50 healthy subjects and 50 patients, age between 2 and 12, with sinonasal symptoms prolonged over 1 month were included to the study. Families of healthy subjects were asked to fill the SN-5t twice with 1-week interval. The patient group completed test once prior the treatment and once 4 weeks after the treatment. Cronbach's test was performed to test internal consistency and Spearman's test was performed to evaluate test-retest validity.Results: The median value of the pre-treatment tests of the patient group and control group was 25 (23-28) and 14.25 (12-16), respectively. A statistically significant difference was found between groups (p<0.001). Area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve (Aroc) value was calculated as 0.992 which stated the strong diagnostic accuracy, and the cutoff point was defined as 16.5. Cronbach's alpha value of 0.75 was found. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient value (Spearman's rho) was calculated as 0.946.Conclusion: The Turkish translation of the SN-5 is a consistent and valid test with high sensitivity and specificity that can be used in studies including Turkish speaking population.
Optimal cutoff value of the dry eye-related quality-of-life score for diagnosing dry eye disease

Abstract:This retrospective study aimed to determine the optimal cutoff values of the Dry Eye-Related Quality-of-Life Score (DEQS) questionnaire for diagnosing dry eye disease (DED) and classifying DED severities. Participants completed the DEQS questionnaire, the Japanese version of the Ocular Surface Disease Index (J-OSDI) questionnaire, and DED examinations. DED was diagnosed according to the 2016 Asia Dry Eye Society diagnostic criteria based on DED symptoms (J-OSDI ≥ 13 points) and tear film breakup time ≤ 5 s. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to calculate the optimal cutoff values of the DEQS summary score for detecting DED and grading its severity. Among 427 patients, 296 (69.3%) and 131 (30.7%) were diagnosed with DED and non-DED, respectively. ROC analysis determined an optimal cutoff value of 15.0 points for DED diagnosis, with 83.5% sensitivity, 87.0% specificity, and an area under the curve of 0.915. The positive and negative predictive values for DEQS ≥ 15.0 points were 93.6% and 69.9%, respectively. DEQS cutoff values of 15.0, 20.0, and 26.8 points could be accepted for severity classification of DED subjective symptoms in clinical use and represent mild, moderate, and severe DED, respectively. Conclusively, the optimal cutoff values of DEQS enable DED detection and subjective symptom severity classification.

Abstract:This study aimed to translate the ACL Donor Site Morbidity (ACL-DSM) questionnaire into Turkish and assess the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the ACL-DSM questionnaire (ACL-DSM-Tr) among individuals following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The process involved forward and back-translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of the ACL-DSM-Tr questionnaire on ninety-nine patients (mean age 30.73 ± 8.55 years). Participants completed ACL-DSM-Tr, International Knee Documentary Committee (IKDC) subjective form, ACL Return to Sport (ACL-RSI), and Forgotten Joint Scale (FJS) questionnaires. The internal consistency, reliability, and validity of the ACL-DSM-Tr were analyzed. The ACL-DSM-Tr demonstrated a high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha .755) and excellent test-retest reliability (Spearman correlation r = .811, p < .001; Cronbach's alpha .890). The ACL-DSM-Tr score exhibited a strong positive correlation with the IKDC score (r = .690, p < .001) and a moderate positive correlation with the FJS score (r = .535, p < .001). Despite a fair correlation between ACL-DSM-Tr and ACL- RSI subgroup scores, no significant correlation was observed with the ACL-RSI total score (p = .297). In conclusion, the ACL-DSM-Tr demonstrated internal consistency, reliability, and validity in patients with ACL reconstruction. This questionnaire has the potential to yield significant benefits in monitoring patient satisfaction and evaluating the level of comfort experienced at the donor site following ACL reconstruction.
Enhancing the cross-cultural adaptation and validation process: linguistic and psychometric testing of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of a self-report measure for dry eye

Abstract:Objectives: To provide a reliable, validated, and culturally adapted instrument that may be used in monitoring dry eye in Brazilian patients and to discuss the strategies for the enhancement of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation process of a self-report measure for dry eye. Methods: The cross-cultural adaptation process (CCAP) of the original Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) into Brazilian-Portuguese was conducted using a 9-step guideline. The synthesis of translations was tested twice, for face and content validity, by different subjects (focus groups and cognitive interviews). The expert committee contributed on several steps, and back translations were based on the final rather than the prefinal version. For validation, the adapted version was applied in a prospective longitudinal study to 101 patients from the Dry Eye Clinic at the General Hospital of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Simultaneously to the OSDI, patients answered the short form-36 health survey (SF-36) and the 25-item visual function questionnaire (VFQ-25) and underwent clinical evaluation. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and measure validity were assessed. Results: Cronbach's alpha value of the cross-culturally adapted Brazilian-Portuguese version of the OSDI was 0.905, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.801. There was a statistically significant difference between OSDI scores in patients with dry eye (41.15 ± 27.40) and without dry eye (17.88 ± 17.09). There was a negative association between OSDI and VFQ-25 total score (P < 0.01) and between the OSDI and five SF-36 domains. OSDI scores correlated positively with lissamine green and fluorescein staining scores (P < 0.001) and negatively with Schirmer test I and tear break-up time values (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Although most of the reviewed guidelines on CCAP involve well-defined steps (translation, synthesis/reconciliation, back translation, expert committee review, pretesting), the proposed methodological steps have not been applied in a uniform way. The translation and adaptation process requires skill, knowledge, experience, and a considerable investment of time to maximize the attainment of semantic, idiomatic, experiential, and conceptual equivalence between the source and target questionnaires. A well-established guideline resulted in a culturally adapted Brazilian-Portuguese version of the OSDI, tested and validated on a sample of Brazilian population, and proved to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing patients with dry eye syndrome in Brazil.

Abstract:Questionnaires with validated psychometric properties are highly valuable instruments in clinical practice as they facilitate the measurement of subjective symptomatology. 1 This aids clinicians in gaining a deeper understanding of the patient's symptoms and quality of life (QoL). In recent years, the rise of telemedicine and its subfields has resulted in increased utilization of these questionnaires, for their convenient remote administration before clinical examination. 2 Psychometric questionnaires can be administered via the Internet in an efficient, straightforward, and effective manner, making it an effective method for conducting remote surveys on various aspects of clinical practice, including quality of vision, dry eye, and contact lens discomfort. 3 Online administration offers several advantages, including the ease of test dissemination, the immediacy of data collection, and the ability to investigate symptoms as they arise within subjects' preferred environments and schedules, free from external influences. 4 Several studies have explored the validity of online surveys by comparing results from online studies with those conducted using traditional methods such as mail or in-person interviews. The findings consistently indicate that the validity and reliability of data obtained online are comparable to those obtained through conventional approaches. 5–7
