Abstract:A two new hybrid “organic-inorganic” composite ion exchangers (SAM and FAM), was synthesized by the combination of inorganic ion exchanger tin (IV) silicate and tin (IV) antimonate respectively with organic polymer polyacrylamide (PAm). The sorption isotherms for Cs+, Co2+, Sr2+ and Cd2+ ions on composite ion exchanger were investigated in the range (0.0005 - 0.01M) at different reaction temperature (30℃, 45℃ and 60℃ ± 1℃). The sorption data were subjected to different sorption isotherms and the results verified that Langmuir isotherm is the best model to be applied, and the monolayer sorption capacity were calculated and was found to increase as the reaction temperature increases.
Effectiveness of a Theory-Based Tailored Mhealth Physical Activity Intervention for Women Undergoing Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of the theory-based tailored mHealth physical activity (PA) intervention among patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A quasi-experimental study design was adopted. A total of 60 breast cancer patients were selected from two tertiary hospitals in Shanghai and Hangzhou City from September 2019 to August 2021. According to the admission order, 30 patients were first included in the control group, followed by 30 patients in the intervention group. A smartphone application (app) named "Breast Care" was developed based on social cognitive theory, self-efficacy theory, and the theory of planned behavior. The app integrated various functions, including information browsing, PA monitoring and feedback, symptom reporting, and social interaction. Patients in the intervention group received three months of personalized online PA guidance in addition to routine care. The control group received routine care. Baseline and post-intervention investigations after three months were conducted in two groups using the Short Form of International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast cancer. Results: After three months of intervention, compared to the control group, breast cancer patients in the intervention group showed significant improvements in walking, moderate PA, and overall PA (P < 0.05). Compared to the baseline data, breast cancer patients in the intervention group had significant improvements in walking and overall PA after three months (P < 0.05), whereas the control group experienced significant declines in walking, moderate PA, and overall PA after three months (P < 0.05). There were statistically differences between the two groups in scores for anxiety, overall quality of life, and its dimensions, such as physical well-being, emotional well-being, and additional breast cancer well-being (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The theory-based tailored mHealth PA intervention has demonstrated a positive impact on promoting PA behavior change and emotional management among breast cancer patients. The 'Breast Care' app integrated various practical behavior change strategies, offering valuable guidance for personalized remote rehabilitation support for cancer patients. (c) 2024 The authors. Abstract:Introduction The eHealth technologies that are being designed for chronic disease constitute a global trend towards health assessment and self-management. However, most of these approaches tend to focus on a single symptom or problem rather than on the multiple problems that are characteristic of many of these chronic illnesses. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of and adherence to a self-management application (app) that identifies multiple problem areas related to surviving breast cancer as the targeted chronic illness. Methods and analysis This is a randomised controlled study. Eligible participants will be allocated randomly into either an intervention group or a control group at a 1:1 ratio. The intervention group will be assigned to the self-management app (‘Be-with-You’), while the control group will use a general health app (‘Sham’ app). The primary outcomes will include the differences between the two groups in their health literacy, problem-solving skills and self-management skills. The secondary outcomes will include group differences in self-efficacy, readiness for change and health-related quality of life. All of these outcomes will be measured at baseline and at 4 weeks and 12 weeks after intervention. In addition, usability of these two mobile apps will be measured at 4 weeks and 12 weeks after intervention. The planned sample size is 476. Ethics and dissemination The Human Subjects Ethics Sub-committee of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University approved the study (HSEARS20190922001, 24 September 2019). Dissemination of findings will occur at the local, national and international levels. Trial registration number ChiCTR1900026244.

Feasibility of Smartphone Application and Social Media Intervention on Breast Cancer Survivors’ Health Outcomes

Abstract:Breast cancer survivors are at risk for poor health, with physical activity a possible treatment. Little research has examined how technology might promote breast cancer survivor physical activity or health. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of employing a commercially available mobile health application- and social media-based health education intervention to improve breast cancer survivor physical activity or health.Ten breast cancer survivors (X̅ age = 45.80 ± 10.23 years; X̅ weight = 79.51 ± 20.85 kg) participated in this 10-week single-group pilot study from 2015 to 2016. Participants downloaded the MapMyFitness application, documented all physical activity with MapMyFitness, and were enrolled in a Social Cognitive Theory-based, Facebook-delivered health education intervention. Objectively measured physical activity, weight or body composition, cardiovascular fitness, psychosocial constructs, and quality of life indices were measured at baseline and 10 weeks. Intervention use and acceptability was evaluated during and following the intervention. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all study outcomes, with qualitative analyses performed regarding use and acceptability.At postintervention, average daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and steps increased by 2.6 min and 1,657, respectively, with notable decreases in weight (2.4 kg) and body fat percentage (2.3%). Physical activity-related social support and ability to engage in social roles or activity demonstrated the greatest improvements among all psychosocial and quality of life indices, respectively. Participants enjoyed the feedback and tracking features of MapMyFitness, with most finding the Facebook component helpful. All participants recommended the intervention for future use.Physical activity interventions combining commercially available mobile health applications and theoretically based social media-delivered health interventions may promote certain physiological, psychosocial, and quality of life outcomes among breast cancer survivors. Larger samples and randomized studies are warranted.

Abstract:Background Cardiac rehabilitation programs aim to avoid further progression and relapse of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Patients with CVDs undergoing rehabilitation often experience difficulties in integrating and transferring the learned health behaviors into their daily life after returning home. This includes regular physical activity (PA) and sufficient fruit and vegetable consumption (FVC). eHealth individualized interventions have shown to be effective in increasing PA and FVC in home settings. As WeChat is the most popular social media site in China, this should be used for the intervention. The aim of this study is to develop and examine a WeChat mini program-based intervention on PA and FVC promotion among Chinese cardiovascular patients in home-based rehabilitation. Methods The study will adopt a randomized controlled trial (RCT), comprising a WeChat mini program-based intervention group and a waiting-list control group. The intervention content will be designed based on the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). One hundred fifty-eight outpatients will be recruited from the cardiac rehabilitation center of a hospital in southern China and randomly assigned to one of the two groups. During the 10-week duration of the intervention, participants will be invited to access a WeChat mini program comprising two Modules. Module 1 provides weekly learning sessions addressing PA and FVC simultaneously for 10 weeks. Module 2 provides a platform, where participants can review their progress with Module 1 at any time and attend incentive activities aiming at promoting engagement and retention. The outcome variables include PA (mins/week), FVC (portion/day), healthy lifestyle (the synthesis of PA and FVC), social-cognitive predictors of behavior change (risk perception, outcome expectancies, self-efficacy, intention, planning, social support, and action control) as well as health outcomes (Body mass index, depression, and quality of life). Data collection will be implemented at pre-test, post-test and a post-test after 3-month respectively. Discussion The current study will be significant to understand how such a cost-effective social media mini program-based intervention enables participants to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If it is effective, it will enrich home-based cardiac rehabilitation approaches which can in turn save the lives of patients as well as much monetary, time and other investments. The Cortical Network for Braille Writing in the Blind

Abstract:Fundamental forms of high-order cognition, such as reading and writing, are usually studied in the context of one modality - vision. People without sight, however, use the kinesthetic-based Braille writing, and haptic-based Braille reading. We asked whether the cognitive and motor control mechanisms underlying writing and reading are modality-specific or supramodal. While a number of previous functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies have investigated the brain network for Braille reading in the blind, such studies on Braille writing are lacking. Consequently, no comparative network analysis of Braille writing vs. reading exists. Here, we report the first study of Braille writing, and a comparison of the brain organization for Braille writing vs Braille reading. FMRI was conducted in a Siemens 3T Trio scanner. Our custom MRI-compatible drawing/writing lectern was further modified to provide for Braille reading and writing. Each of five paragraphs of novel Braille text describing objects, faces and navigation sequences was read, then reproduced twice by Braille writing from memory, then read a second time. During Braille reading, the haptic-sensing of the Braille letters strongly activated not only the early visual area V1 and V2, but some highly specialized areas, such as the classical visual grapheme area and the Exner motor grapheme area. Braille-writing-from-memory, engaged a significantly more extensive network in dorsal motor, somatosensory/kinesthetic, dorsal parietal and prefrontal cortex. However, in contrast to the largely extended V1 activation in drawing-from-memory in the blind after training (Likova, 2012), Braille writing from memory generated focal activation restricted to the most foveal part of V1, presumably reflecting topographically the focal demands of such a "pin-pricking" task.
Mobile health-based gamification intervention to increase physical activity participation among patients with coronary heart disease: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial

Abstract:Introduction Despite proven benefits, physical activity participation remains low in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Scientific evidence suggests that mobile health (mHealth)-based gamification interventions could increase physical activity levels. However, several systematic reviews demonstrated that most gamification intervention designs do not appropriately leverage theories from health behaviour models, and empirical evidence on the efficacy of such interventions among patients with CHD is still emerging. This study embeds the principles of behavioural economics into a gamification intervention based on a smartphone app (WeChat applet) to explore whether a mHealth-based gamification intervention can improve participation in physical activity and other related physical and psychological outcomes in patients with CHD. Methods We propose a single-blinded three-arm randomised controlled trial with 108 patients with CHD, who will be randomly divided into three groups (Control group: WeChat applet+step goal setting; Individual group: WeChat applet+step goal setting+gamification; Team group: WeChat applet+step goal setting+gamification+collaboration). The interventions will last for 12 weeks and follow-up for 12 weeks. All patients will receive only WeChat applet-based step goal setting in the follow-up period. The primary outcome is physical activity participation, which includes a change in daily steps and self-reported physical activity from the baseline to 12 and 24 weeks, and the proportion of patient-days that step goals achieved in 12 and 24 weeks. The secondary outcomes include biomedical and lifestyle-related risk factors, intrinsic motivation, enjoyment, competence, autonomy and relatedness, social support and mental health and patients’ satisfaction, perceptions and intervention experience. Ethics and dissemination The Human Research Ethics Committee of the School of Nursing, Jilin University (HREC 2020122401) approved this. Abstract:Introduction: Despite proven benefits, patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) typically fail to participate in sufficient physical activity (PA). Effective interventions should be implemented to help patients maintain a healthy lifestyle and modify their present behavior. Gamification is the use of game design features (such as points, leaderboards, and progress bars) to improve motivation and engagement. It shows the potential for encouraging patients to engage in PA. However, empirical evidence on the efficacy of such interventions among patients with CHD is still emerging. Purpose: The aim of the study is to explore whether a smartphone-based gamification intervention could increase PA participation and other physical and psychological outcomes in CHD patients. Methods: Participants with CHD were randomly assigned to three groups (control group, individual group, and team group). The individual and team groups received gamified behavior intervention based on behavioral economics. The team group combined gamified intervention with social interaction. The intervention lasted for 12 weeks, and the follow-up was12 weeks. The primary outcomes included the change in daily steps and the proportion of patient days that step goals were achieved. The secondary outcomes included competence, autonomy, relatedness, and autonomous motivation. Results: For the individual group, smartphone-based gamification intervention significantly increased PA among CHD patients over the 12-week period (step count difference 988; 95% CI 259-1717; p < 0.01) and had a good maintenance effect during the follow-up period (step count difference 819; 95% CI 24-1613; p < 0.01). There are also significant differences in competence, autonomous motivation, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference in 12 weeks between the control group and individual group. For the team group, gamification intervention with collaboration didn't result in significant increases in PA. But patients in this group had a significant increase in competence, relatedness, and autonomous motivation. Conclusion: A smartphone-based gamification intervention was proven to be an effective way to increase motivation and PA engagement, with a substantial maintenance impact (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry Identifier: ChiCTR2100044879).
Effects of Short-Term Unsupervised Exercise, Based on Smart Bracelet Monitoring, on Body Composition in Patients Recovering from Breast Cancer

Abstract:Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of exercise, monitored and managed using smart bracelets, on body composition, and quality of life in breast cancer survivors. Methods: A before-and-after study was conducted in 109 patients who were in the recovery phase of breast cancer and attended the Breast Surgery Department of the Cancer Hospital of Fudan University up to December 2017. Patients were advised to adhere to at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, and a smart bracelet was issued to each participant to record their daily exercise data for 3 months. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to observe the effects of short-term unsupervised exercise intervention on body composition in patients recovering from breast cancer. Patients completed the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast to assess health-related quality of life. Results: Weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat mass (BFM), fat mass index (FMI), percent body fat (PBF), arm circumference (AC), arm muscle circumference (AMC), and visceral fat area (VFA) were lower than baseline after exercising for 3 months based on data from the wearable devices (P < .05). The only significant improvement was found in the "additional concerns about breast cancer" category among the quality-of-life assessments (P < .05). The average walking time was negatively associated with BFM, PBF, and FMI, while the average calorie consumption due to running was positively associated with fat free mass (FFM). Conclusion: In this study, we demonstrated that short-term exercise may be beneficial for postoperative breast cancer survivors. A wearable device could help patients track physical data easily and promote a healthier and more positive life.
Improving physical and mental health in women with breast cancer undergoing anthracycline-based chemotherapy through wearable device-based aerobic exercise: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Purpose Aimed to assess the impact of wearable device-based aerobic exercise on the physical and mental well-being of women with breast cancer (BC) undergoing chemotherapy. Methods Forty adult women with BC who underwent anthracycline-based chemotherapy were randomly allocated to the exercise group ( n = 21) or the control group ( n = 19). Both groups received standard health education and oncology care. In addition, the exercise group wore wearable devices to engage in moderate to high-intensity (50–90% HRmax) aerobic exercise during chemotherapy, while the control group did not carry out exercise intervention. Health-related physical fitness level, physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE), anxiety and depression scores, sleep quality, cancer-related fatigue, and overall quality of life (QoL), were assessed both before (prior to the first chemotherapy session) and after (prior to the fifth chemotherapy session) the exercise intervention. Exercise-related adverse events, exercise compliance, number and severity of gastrointestinal reactions and myelosuppression occurred were recorded during the exercise intervention. Results After the intervention, compared to the control group, the exercise group (1) had significantly higher relative VO 2 peak ( p = 0.003) and handgrip strength ( p < 0.001); (2) had significantly higher PAEE ( p < 0.001); (3) had a significantly lower scores in anxiety ( p = 0.007), depression ( p = 0.028), sleep quality in domains of subjective sleep quality ( p = 0.010), sleep disturbances ( p = 0.004), daytime dysfunction ( p = 0.007), cancer-related fatigue in domains of physical ( p < 0.001) and affective ( p < 0.001); and (4) had a significantly lower scores in QoL in domains of physical well-being ( p < 0.001) and emotional well-being ( p = 0.019), while a significantly higher scores in functional well-being ( p < 0.001). Patients in the exercise group experienced less severe gastrointestinal reactions ( p = 0.028) and myelosuppressive symptoms ( p < 0.001) than that in the control group. Patients in the exercise group had no serious exercise-related adverse events, with a mean exercise adherence of 81.8%. Conclusion Wearable device-based aerobic exercise during chemotherapy can be an effective adjunctive therapy to improve physical and mental health in BC patients. The primary outcomes included the change in daily steps and the proportion of patient-days that step goals achieved. Patients also completed Psychological Needs Satisfaction in Exercise Scale (PNSE), Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ)-3, Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES), Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)-7, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 at baseline, 12 weeks and 24 weeks. Results Compared with the control group (n=36), participants in the individual group (n=36) had a significantly greater increase in mean daily steps from baseline during the intervention group (difference 988; 95% CI, 259 - 1717; P<0.01), and had a significantly greater proportion of patient-days that step goals achieved (difference 0.38; 95% CI, 0.04 - 0.13; P<.001), competence (difference 0.6, 95% CI, 0.3 - 0.8; P<.001), autonomous motivation (difference 3.3; 95% CI, 2.2 to 4.4; P<.001), weight (difference -1.2, 95% CI, -1.8 to -0.6; P<.001), BMI (difference -0.4; 95% CI -0.6 to -0.2; P<.001) and waist circumference (difference -1.2; 95% CI -1.7 to -0.6; P<.001). Participants in team group (n=36) had a significantly greater increase in competence (difference 0.3; 95% CI 0.1 to 0.6; P<.001), relatedness (difference 0.9; 95% CI 0.7 to 1.2; P<.001), autonomous motivation (difference 3.0; 95% CI 2.1 to 4.0; P<.001),however, no significant difference of change in step counts was found between team group and control group. Conclusions A smartphone-based gamification intervention may be an effective way to promote physical activity in patients with coronary heart disease within 12 weeks if we incorporate appropriate game elements into the smartphone application.

Abstract:Background: Physical activity is positively associated with survival and quality of life among breast cancer survivors. Despite these benefits, the majority of breast cancer survivors are insufficiently active. The potential health benefits of reducing sedentary behaviour (sitting time) in this population have not been extensively investigated. The ACTIVATE Trial will evaluate the efficacy of an intervention that combines wearable technology (the Garmin Vivofit2®) with traditional behavioural change approaches to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour performed by breast cancer survivors. Methods/design: This randomised controlled trial includes inactive, postmenopausal women diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer who have completed their primary treatment. Participants are randomly assigned to the primary intervention group (Garmin Vivofit2®; behavioural feedback and goal setting session; and, five telephone-delivered health coaching sessions) or to the wait-list control group. The primary intervention is delivered over a 12-week period. The second 12-week period comprises a maintenance phase for the primary intervention group, and an abridged intervention (Garmin Vivofit2® only) for the wait-list control group. Moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour are assessed by accelerometry at baseline (T1), end of intervention (T2), and end of maintenance phase (T3). Discussion: The ACTIVATE Trial is one of the first studies to incorporate wearable technology into an intervention for cancer survivors. If the use of wearable technology (in combination with behaviour change strategies, or alone) proves efficacious, it may become an inexpensive and sustainable addition to the health promotion strategies available to health care providers in the cancer survivorship context. Abstract:Background: The benefits of an active lifestyle after a breast cancer diagnosis are well recognized, but the majority of survivors are insufficiently active. The ACTIVATE Trial examined the efficacy of an intervention (use of the Garmin Vivofit 2 activity monitor coupled with a behavioral feedback and goal-setting session and 5 telephone-delivered health coaching sessions) to increase moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and reduce sedentary behavior in breast cancer survivors. Methods: This randomized controlled trial recruited 83 inactive, postmenopausal women diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer who had completed primary treatment. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group or to the control group, and the intervention was delivered over a 12-week period. MVPA and sedentary behavior were measured with Actigraph and activPAL accelerometers at baseline (T1) and at the end of the intervention (T2). Results: Retention in the trial was high, with 80 (96%) of participants completing T2 data collection. At T2, there was a significant between-group difference in MVPA (69 min/wk; 95% CI = 22-116) favoring the intervention group. The trial resulted in a statistically significant decrease in both total sitting time and prolonged bouts (≥20 min) of sitting, with between-group reductions of 37 min/d (95% CI = -72 to -2) and 42 min/d (95% CI = -83 to -2), respectively, favoring the intervention group. Conclusion: Results from the ACTIVATE Trial suggest that the use of wearable technology presents an inexpensive and scalable opportunity to facilitate more active lifestyles for cancer survivors. Whether or not such wearable technology-based interventions can create sustainable behavioral change should be the subject of future research.
Noise Removal for Baseline Wander andPower Line in Electrocardiograph Signals

Abstract:Baselines wander and power line interference reduction is the first step in all Electrocardiograph (ECG) output signal function. The baseline wander is caused by changeable electrode-skin impedance, patients’ movements and breath. The ECG signal is also degraded by additive 50 or 60 Hz power line interference. Adaptive filter is a primary method to ECG signal filters, since it does not require the statistical characteristics of signal. This project presents a novel adaptive filter for removing the artifacts from ECG signals based on Constrained Stability Least Mean Square (CSLMS) algorithm. This algorithm provides significant improvements in decreasing mean-squared error (EMSE) and consequently minimizing signal distortion. Different filter structures are presented to eliminate the diverse forms of noise. Then apply this algorithm on ECG signals from the MIT-BIH data base and compare its performance with the conventional Least Mean Square algorithm. The outputs show that the performance of the CSLMS based algorithm is superior to that of the LMS based algorithm in noise reduction.
A remotely delivered, peer-led intervention to improve physical activity and quality of life in younger breast cancer survivors

Abstract:Younger breast cancer survivors (YBCS) consistently report poorer quality of life (QOL) than older survivors. Increasing physical activity (PA) may improve QOL, but this has been understudied in YBCS. This single arm pilot study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a 3-month, peer-delivered, remote intervention to increase PA and improve QOL in YBCS. Data were collected from October 2019 - July 2020. Participants (n = 34, 43.1 ± 5.5 years old, 46 ± 34.4 months post-diagnosis, BMI = 30.2 ± 7.4 kg/m2) completed six video sessions with a trained peer mentor; self-monitored PA with a Fitbit activity tracker; and interacted with a private Fitbit Community for social support. At baseline, 3-and 6-months, participants completed QOL questionnaires and PA was measured through accelerometer (moderate-to-vigorous PA [MVPA]) and self-report (strength and flexibility). A parallel mixed-methods approach (qualitative interviews and quantitative satisfaction survey at 3-months) explored intervention feasibility and acceptability. One-way repeated-measures ANOVAs examined impacts on PA and QOL at 3-and 6-months. The intervention was feasible as evidenced by efficient recruitment, high retention, and adherence to intervention components. Remote delivery, working with a peer mentor, and using Fitbit tools were highly acceptable. From baseline to 3-months, participants increased time spent in objectively measured MVPA, strength, and flexibility exercises, and reported meaningful improvements to body image, fatigue, anxiety, and emotional support. A fully remote, peer-to-peer intervention is an acceptable and promising strategy to increase PA and improve QOL in YBCS. Refinements to the intervention and its delivery should be further assessed in future studies, toward the goal of disseminating an evidence-based, scalable intervention to the growing number of YBCS.Trial registration Prospectively registered as NCT04064892.

Abstract:Background and Aim: A healthy body composition can improve the prognosis of breast cancer survivors. The study aimed to describe the body composition profile of breast cancer survivors and find out whether a short-term (3 months) wearable device-based lifestyle intervention had an effect on patients' body weight and body composition. Methods: A before-and-after study was conducted on patients with stage I-III postoperative breast cancer, aged 18-70 years. Body composition was analyzed at baseline, and then patients went for a health education program. A wearable activity tracker and a goal of calorie consumption based on each individual's weight were provided to each participant, and they were required to be equipped for 90 days. After 3 months, body composition was analyzed again. Results: Of 113 patients who completed the study, 65.49% showed a normal body mass index (BMI) at baseline assessment, 71.68% had a body fat percentage of more than 30%, and 41.59% had less skeleton muscle mass. During the intervention, the daily step count was 8,851.28 +/- 2,399.31, and 59.21% reached the set goal calorie consumption. After a 3-month intervention, the patients had a significant reduction in body weight, fat mass, BMI, body fat percentage, and visceral fat area, but not in protein mass and skeleton muscle mass. Patients of different age, molecular classification, and therapy benefited from the intervention. Conclusion: Wearable technology with body composition analysis and health education for breast cancer survivors may help reduce weight and improve body composition even in a short time.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Web-based and theory-based interventions for multiple health behaviors appears to be a promising approach with respect to the adoption and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle in cardiac patients who have been discharged from the hospital. Until now, no randomized controlled trials have tested this assumption among Chinese rehabilitation patients with coronary heart disease using a Web-based intervention.OBJECTIVE: The study aim was to evaluate the effect of an 8-week Web-based intervention in terms of physical activity (PA), fruit and vegetable consumption (FVC), lifestyle changes, social-cognitive outcomes, and health outcomes compared with a waiting control group in Chinese cardiac patients. The intervention content was theory-based on the health action process approach. Self-reported data were evaluated, including PA, FVC, healthy lifestyle (the synthesis of PA and FVC), internal resources (combination of intention, self-efficacy, and planning), and an external resource (social support) of PA and FVC behaviors, as well as perceived health outcomes (body mass index, quality of life, and depression).METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 136 outpatients with coronary heart disease from the cardiac rehabilitation center of a hospital in China were recruited. After randomization and exclusion of unsuitable participants, 114 patients were assigned to 1 of the 2 groups: (1) the intervention group: first 4 weeks on PA and subsequent 4 weeks on FVC and (2) the waiting control group. A total of 2 Web-based assessments were conducted, including 1 at the beginning of the intervention (T1, N=114), and 1 at the end of the 8-week intervention (T2, N=83). The enrollment and follow-up took place from December 2015 to May 2016.RESULTS: The Web-based intervention outperformed the control condition for PA, FVC, internal resources of PA and FVC, and an external resource of FVC, with an eta-squared effect size ranging from 0.06 to 0.43. Furthermore, the intervention effect was seen in the improvement of quality of life (F1,79=16.36, P<.001, η2=.17). When predicting a healthy lifestyle at follow-up, baseline lifestyle (odds ratio, OR 145.60, 95% CI 11.24-1886; P<.001) and the intervention (OR 21.32, 95% CI 2.40-189.20; P=.006) were found to be significant predictors. Internal resources for FVC mediated the effect of the intervention on the adoption of a healthy lifestyle (R2adj=.29; P=.001), indicating that if the intervention increased the internal resource of behavior, the adoption of a healthy lifestyle was more likely.CONCLUSIONS: Patients' psychological resources such as motivation, self-efficacy, planning, and social support as well as lifestyle can be improved by a Web-based intervention that focuses on both PA and FVC. Abstract:Background: Zero-time Exercise (ZTEx), a simple strength- and stamina-enhancing physical activity (PA) requiring no extra equipment, can potentially increase PA and fitness. This pilot trial examined the feasibility and potential effectiveness of a smartphone ZTEx intervention to promote PA and fitness in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Methods: A parallel-group assessor-blinded pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted on Chinese patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD) in three cardiology clinics. The experimental group received a 15-min brief individual face-to-face session and a 12-week ZTEx instant messaging with 28 picture e-messages and a smartphone ZTEx application (ZTExApp). The control group received the same duration of individual session and number and format of e-messages, but the content was healthy eating and breathing exercise. The feasibility was assessed based on: attrition rate, usage, response rate and perception of the intervention. The outcome evaluation included primary outcome (PA), fitness, exercise self-efficacy and intention, perceived happiness and health, and quality of life. A linear mixed model was used with intention-to-treat analysis adjusting for sex, age and baseline values. A semi-structured interview was conducted to collect feedback from the experiment group. Results: One hundred thirty-nine patients (mean age 59.8 ± 6.6; 71.2% male) were randomized to the experimental group (n = 70) or control group (n = 69), and 80% (56/70) and 82% (57/69) of patients completed the 12-week follow-up assessment, respectively. The attrition rate was 18.7%. The experimental group reported that ZTEx was feasible to integrate PA into their daily life and appreciated the picture e-messages, and 95% of them sent feedback to us, but only 19.6% (13/70) of the participants entered their PA information into the e-diary of the ZTExApp. The experimental group had a significantly greater increase in time spent walking [mean difference (95% CI): 155.3 (10.1, 300.4), P = 0.04, Cohen's d = 0.34] than the control group. Conclusions: This pilot study showed using a brief ZTEx face-to-face session with picture e-messages empowered patients with CHD to integrate PA into daily life. Future definitive trials with a longer follow-up and a more user-friendly ZTExApp interface are necessary to determine the effectiveness of the smartphone ZTEx intervention in enhancing PA and related outcomes. Abstract:Objective There are currently an increasing number of mobile health (mHealth) programs offered to patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy, but their rate of adherence to app usage has remained low. This study aimed to examine the feasibility of an mHealth app-based program such as the adherence rate of app usage and determine the preliminary effects on self-efficacy, quality of life, symptom burden and healthcare utilization in these patients. Methods We conducted a randomized controlled pilot trial. Ninety-six participants were randomly allocated into either an intervention group or a control group (routine care plus a placebo app). The intervention group engaged in a 6-week self-regulation activity and received nurse-led social support via the app. The intention-to-treat principle was adopted. The generalized estimating equation was utilized to analyze the between-group, within-group and interaction effectiveness of this program. Results Totally 96 participants were enrolled from 16 May to 23 August 2022. The average rate of adherence to app usage increased from 4.8% at week 3 to 51.2% at week 6. There was a statistically significant reduction in the physiological efficacy scores of the intervention (p < .001) and control groups (p < .001) at week 6, compared with the baseline. At week 6, the intervention group reported a significantly lower symptom burden (p = .042) and significantly better physical well-being than the control group (p = .024). Conclusions It is feasible to perform an mHealth app-based self-management program for patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. Nurses can utilize this program to facilitate patient self-management of symptoms during chemotherapy. Registration Clinicaltrials.gov, https://clinicaltrials.gov, (NCT05192525).
