Abstract:AimsDepression is a common co-morbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Untreated depression in these patients adversely affects self-care activities and other diabetes complications. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of depression among patients with T2DM by conducting a meta-analysis of observational studies.MethodsMEDLINE, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases were searched for all observational studies that assessed depression in T2DM. Relevant articles were searched using the combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms of "depression", "depressive disorder", and "diabetes mellitus" published between January 2007 and July 2018. Random effects model was used to estimate the weighted prevalence rates and 95% CI using "metaprop program in STATA 11".ResultsIn total, the 248 included studies (with 273 reported prevalence) identified 83,020,812 participants; of them, 23,245,827 (28%; 95% CI 27, 29) suffered from different severity levels of depressive disorders. The prevalence of depression was separately reported in 137,372 males and 134,332 females. Of them, 31,396 males (23%, 95% CI: 20, 26) and 45,673 females (34%, 95% CI: 31, 38) were depressed. Compared with global estimate, depression prevalence was lower in Europe (24%) and Africa (27%), but higher in Australia (29%) and Asia (32%). The prevalence in America was equal to the estimated prevalence in the world (28%). Depression was more common in subjects younger than 65 compared with elderlies (31% vs. 21%).ConclusionOur findings demonstrated that almost one in four adults with T2DM experienced depression. Given the high prevalence of depressive disorders in diabetic patients, screening these patients for co-morbid depression and its relevant risk factors is highly recommended.

Depression In Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the incidence of depression in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: One hundred newly diagnosed (4 - 12 weeks) T2DM participants were evaluated for depressive symptoms by using the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Blood glucose (HBA1C), urinary albumin, BMI, and blood pressure were measured. Sexual function was evaluated by a self-score on IIEF-5 Questionnaires in male participants below 60 years of age. Results: Twenty-eight (28%) of these had depressive scores, 18 (18%) had mild scores, six (6%) had moderate scores, and four had (4%) severe ones. In those who took oral medication, the percentage of depression was 18.5% (10/54) and in those who were treated by insulin the percentage was 39.1% (18/46). The levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), HBA1c, and urinary albumin were higher in those with depression. The SDS score was negatively correlated with age and annual household income (r = 0.151,0.139, P < 0.05); 17% of the (8/48) males below 60 years of age was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) by II EF-5score < 20 and the severity of depressive symptoms was negatively correlated with II EF-5score (r = 0.131, P < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings indicated that depressive symptoms are common in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics. A variety of factors could be influencing the severity of depressive symptoms.
High Prevalence of Depressive Symptoms in Patients With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes in Developing Countries: Results From the International Diabetes Management Practices Study

Abstract:Objective: Depression is common in people with diabetes, but data from developing countries are scarce. We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for depressive symptoms in patients with diabetes using data from the International Diabetes Management Practices Study (IDMPS). Research design and methods: IDMPS is an ongoing multinational, cross-sectional study investigating quality of care in patients with diabetes in real-world settings. Data from wave 5 (2011), including 21 countries, were analyzed using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive symptoms. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify risk factors of depressive symptoms. Results: Of 9,865 patients eligible for analysis, 2,280 had type 1 and 7,585 had type 2 diabetes (treatment: oral glucose-lowering drugs [OGLD] only, n = 4,729; OGLDs plus insulin, n = 1,892; insulin only, n = 964). Depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score ≥5) were reported in 30.7% of those with type 1 diabetes. In patients with type 2 diabetes, the respective figures were 29.0% for OGLDs-only, 36.6% for OGLDs-plus-insulin, and 46.7% for insulin-only subgroups. Moderate depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score 10-19) were observed in 8-16% of patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Female sex, complications, and low socioeconomic status were independently associated with depressive symptoms. In type 1 diabetes and in the type 2 diabetes OGLDs-only group, depression was associated with poor glycemic control. Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are common in patients with diabetes from developing countries, calling for routine screening, especially in high-risk groups, to reduce the double burden of diabetes and depression and their negative interaction.
Diabetes Control Status and Severity of Depression: Insights from NHANES 2005–2020

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Examining the risk of depression among patients with diabetes is crucial for understanding the mental health burden of this chronic condition. This study examined the likelihood of depression severity among participants in the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2020, based on glycemic control status. Methods: Depression severity was categorized into three levels using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and glycemic control status was categorized into five groups based on prior diabetes diagnoses and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Using multinomial logistic regression models, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of various severities of depression by glycemic control status were calculated after comprehensive adjustments. Results: Out of 76,496 NHANES participants from 2005 to 2020, 37,037 individuals who met our inclusion criteria were analyzed. The likelihood of depression in individuals with prediabetes was not significantly different from those with normoglycemia. In contrast, participants with diabetes had a higher likelihood of having depression versus individuals with normoglycemia even when they kept their HbA1c within the normal range (lower than 5.7%). Among individuals with diabetes, those with HbA1c < 5.7% had a higher likelihood of mild depression (OR: 1.54, 95%CI: 1.02–2.34), while having HbA1c ≥ 10.0% was significantly associated with a greater likelihood of moderate to severe depression (OR: 1.53, 95%CI: 1.07–2.19) compared to those with HbA1c levels of 5.7–10.0%. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the need for a holistic approach to diabetes care that includes mental health considerations, especially for those who are at the extremes of the HbA1c spectrum.

Abstract:Clinically significant depression is present in one of every four people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Depression increases the risk of the development of T2DM and the subsequent risks of hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and micro- and macrovascular complications. Conversely, a diagnosis of T2DM increases the risk of incident depression and can contribute to a more severe course of depression. This linkage reflects a shared etiology consisting of complex bidirectional interactions among multiple variables, a process that may include autonomic and neurohormonal dysregulation, weight gain, inflammation, and hippocampal structural alterations. Two recent meta-analyses of randomized controlled depression treatment trials in patients with T2DM concluded that psychotherapy and antidepressant medication (ADM) were each moderately effective for depression and that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) had beneficial effects on glycemic control. However, the number of studies (and patients exposed to randomized treatment) included in these analyses is extremely small and limits the certainty of conclusions that can be drawn from the data. Ultimately, there is no escaping the paucity of the evidence base and the need for additional controlled trials that specifically address depression management in T2DM. Future trials should determine both the effects of treatment and the change in depression during treatment on measures of mood, glycemic control, and medical outcome.

REVIEW: The junctional zone of the uterus and its contractions

Abstract:There is a long history of research into gross uterine contractions during either parturition or dysmenorrhoea, measuring either intracavity pressure changes or electrophysiological measurements within the myometrium. More recently, however, real time ultrasound has demonstrated more subtle contractions, in which peristalticlike movements are confined to the endometrium and the immediately adjacent myometrium in the non-pregnant uterus. The lack of histological evidence for contractile tissue within the endometrium leads us to believe the origin of these contractions is within the junctional zone (subendometrial layer) of the myometrium. Evidence is gathering from a variety of sources that these uterine contractions have an important role in several reproductive processes, including sperm transport and implantation. This review describes how this information has been accumulated, how it has altered our views about basic uterine structure and physiology, and the probable relevance for reproductive medicine techniques.
Depression in Chinese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: Associations with Hyperglycemia, Hypoglycemia, and Poor Treatment Adherence

Abstract:BackgroundWe hypothesize that depression in type 2 diabetes might be associated with poor glycemic control, in part due to suboptimal self-care. We tested this hypothesis by examining the associations of depression with clinical and laboratory findings in a multicenter survey of Chinese type 2 diabetic patients.Method2538 patients aged 18-75 years attending hospital-based clinics in four cities in China underwent detailed clinical-psychological-behavioral assessment during a 12-month period between 2011 and 2012. Depression was diagnosed if Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score 10. Diabetes self-care and medication adherence were assessed using the Summary of Diabetes Self-care Activities and the 4-item Morisky medication adherence scale respectively.ResultsIn this cross-sectional study (mean age: 56.410.5[SD] years, 53% men), 6.1% (n=155) had depression. After controlling for study sites, patients with depression had higher HbA(1c) (7.92.0 vs. 7.72.0%, P=0.008) and were less likely to achieve HbA(1c) goal of <7.0% (36.2% vs 45.6%, P=0.004) than those without depression. They were more likely to report hypoglycemia and to have fewer days of being adherent to their recommended diet, exercise, foot care and medication. In logistic regression, apart from young age, poor education, long disease duration, tobacco use, high body mass index, use of insulin, depression was independently associated with failure to attain HbA(1c) target (Odds Ratio [OR]=1.56, 95%CI:1.05-2.32, P=0.028). The association between depression and glycemic control became non-significant after inclusion of adherence to diet, exercise and medication (OR=1.48, 95% CI 0.99-2.21, P=0.058).ConclusionDepression in type 2 diabetes was closely associated with hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, which might be partly mediated through poor treatment adherence.

Abstract:Neospora caninum is an obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite that causes reproductive loss and severe economic losses in dairy and goat industry. In the present study, we aim to investigate the effects of N. caninum tachyzoites on the release of extracellular traps (ETs) in caprine monocytes and furthermore elucidated parts of its molecular mechanisms. N. caninum tachyzoite-induced monocytes-derived ETs formation was detected by scanning electron microscopy. H3 and myeloperoxidase (MPO) within monocyte-ETs structures were examined using laser scanning confocal microscopy analyses. The results showed that N. caninum tachyzoites were not only able to trigger ETs formation in caprine monocytes, but also that monocyte-released ETs were capable of entrapping viable tachyzoites. Histones and MPO were found to be decorating the DNA within the monocytes derived-ETs structures thus proving the classical components of ETs. Furthermore, inhibitors of NADPH oxidase-, MPO-, ERK 1/2-, or p38 MAPK-signaling pathway significantly decreased N. caninum tachyzoite-triggered caprine monocyte-derived ETosis. This is the first report of ETs release extruded from caprine monocytes after N. caninum exposure and thus showing that this early innate immune effector mechanism might be relevant during the acute phase of caprine neosporosis.
Comorbid elevated symptoms of anxiety and depression in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes: Results from the International Diabetes MILES Study

Abstract:Aims: We examined: (a) the prevalence of comorbid elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression; (b) its demographic/clinical correlates; (c) associations with self-care behaviors, by diabetes type. Methods: Cross-sectional self-report data of 6590 adults with diabetes (42% type 1; 58% type 2) from the Australian and Dutch Diabetes MILES studies were used. Elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression were defined as GAD-7 ≥ 10/PHQ-9 ≥ 10. Results: In both diabetes types, comorbid elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression were present in 9% and symptoms of anxiety alone in 2%; symptoms of depression alone were present in 8% of adults with type 1 diabetes and 11% with type 2 diabetes. Shorter diabetes duration (type 1 only) was the only characteristic that distinguished those with comorbid elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression but not those with symptoms of anxiety/depression alone from the reference group (no/minimal symptoms of anxiety/depression). Those with comorbid elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression had increased odds of sub-optimal diabetes self-care behaviors compared with the reference group, with higher odds than those with symptoms of anxiety or depression alone. Conclusions: Comorbid elevated symptoms of anxiety/depression affected one in ten respondents, who also had increased odds of suboptimal diabetes self-care. Those with shorter type 1 diabetes duration may be at increased risk.
Prevalence and influencing factors of co-morbid depression in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a General Hospital based study

Abstract:BackgroundDepression and diabetes have been recognized as major public health issues in China, however, no studies to date examined the factors associated with the development of depression in patients with diabetes in China. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of co-morbid depression among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and to examine the influence factors of co-morbid depression in a group of patients with type 2 DM.MethodsThe study was conducted from March l to May 31, 2012, in the Department of Endocrinology of the First Affiliated Hospital of the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). A systematic random sample of 412 type 2 DM patients aged over 18 years was selected. A structured questionnaire was used for collecting the information about socio-demographic data, lifestyle factors and clinical characteristics. Depression and social support was evaluated by using the Chinese version of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Social Support Rate Scale (SSRS), respectively. Weights and heights were measured. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was abstracted from each patient directly after the interview.ResultsOf the total sample, 142 patients had depression according to the BDI scores (BDI scores ≥14), the prevalence of co-morbid depression in this study population was 5.7 % (142/2500). Of which, 56 had major depression (BDI ≥ 21), and 86 had moderate depression (BDI ≥ 14&BDI < 21). Logistic regression analysis indicated that a high HbA1c level, a high BMI, low quality health insurance, and being single, were significantly associated with the development of depression. However, a family history of diabetes and a high social support level are likely protective factors.ConclusionsThe prevalence of co-morbid depression was 5.7 % among Chinese subjects with type 2 DM in this study. High HbA1c level, high BMI score, being single, low social support level, and low quality health insurance were associated with the presence of depression. These findings support a recommendation for routine screening and management in China for depression in patients with diabetes, especially for those in primary care, to reduce the number of the depressed or the misrecognized depressed diabetic patients.

Abstract:Depressive symptoms are common among patients with diabetes and may have a significant impact on self-management and health outcomes. In this study we predicted that: 1) there would be a significant association between depressive symptoms and diabetes symptom burden, physical functioning, diabetes self-care, and HbA1c levels; and, 2) that the association between depressive symptoms and HbA1c levels would be significantly greater in type 1, as compared to type 2 diabetic patients. This cross-sectional observational study of 276 type 1 and 199 type 2 diabetes patients took place in a tertiary care specialty clinic. We collected self-reported data on depressive symptoms, complications, medical comorbidity, diabetes symptoms, diabetes self-care behaviors, physical functioning, and demographics. From automated data we determined mean HbA1c levels over the prior year. We performed linear regression analyses to assess the association between depressive symptoms and diabetes symptom perception, diabetes self-care behaviors, physical functioning, and glycemic control. Among patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes, depressive symptoms were associated with greater diabetes symptom reporting, poorer physical functioning, and less adherence to exercise regimens and diet. There was a significant association between depressive symptoms and HbA1c levels in type 1, but not type 2 diabetic patients. Because of their association with clinical aspects of diabetes care such as diabetes symptom reporting and adherence to diabetes self-care, depressive symptoms are important to recognize in treating patients with diabetes.

Abstract:Background In consideration of the substantial occurrence rates of diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression, it is imperative to identify patients with DM who are at an elevated risk of developing depression. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine whether the risk of depression escalated proportionally with the severity of diabetes. Methods 2,067,017 adults diagnosed with type 2 DM, with the exception of those diagnosed with depression either before or within one year of the index date, were identified from a nationwide population-based cohort in Korea. Severity scores for DM were established based on various factors, including insulin use, DM duration of at least 5 years, use of three or more oral hypoglycemic agents, the presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), or diabetic retinopathy. Each of these attributes was assigned a score of one point for diabetes severity, and their cumulative sum was defined as a diabetes severity score, ranging from 0 to 6. Results During a median follow-up of 6.2 years, 407,047 cases of major depression were identified. Each component contributing to the DM severity score was significantly associated with an increased risk of depression (all P-values <0.001), with insulin use and the presence of CVD demonstrating the most significant correlation with depression risk. As the DM severity score increased, the risk of depression was observed to significantly escalate (P for trend <0.001). After adjusting for potential confounding variables, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of depression were 1.15 (1.14-1.16) in 1 point, 1.28 (1.27-1.29) in 2 points, 1.45 (1.43-1.47) in 3 points, 1.70 (1.67-1.73) in 4 points, 1.91 (1.84-1.98) in 5 points, and 2.01 (1.79-2.26) in 6 points, respectively. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that diabetes severity is positively associated with an elevated risk of developing major depression. Based on these findings, it is feasible to consider targeting depression screening efforts towards individuals with higher diabetes severity scores.

Abstract:AIMS: To identify the prevalence and major determinants of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with diabetes.METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 2049 people with Types 1 and 2 diabetes, selected from patients experiencing three different models of care in Ireland: (i) traditional mixed care; (ii) hospital/general practitioner (GP) shared care; (iii) structured GP care. Anxiety and depression symptoms were assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Analyses were conducted primarily using logistic regression with adjustment for relevant confounders.RESULTS: The overall response rate was 71% (n = 1456). Based on the HADS, there was evidence of high levels of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with diabetes; 32.0% (95% confidence interval = 29.5-34.6%) exceeded the HADS cut-off score of 'mild to severe' anxiety and 22.4% (95% confidence interval = 20.2-24.7%) exceeded the HADS cut-off score of 'mild to severe' depression. Diabetes complications, smoking, uncertainty about glycaemic control and being an ex-drinker or a heavy drinker were risk factors for both higher anxiety and depression scores in multivariate analysis. Female gender and poor glycaemic control were risks factors associated only with higher anxiety scores. Higher socio-economic status and older age were protective factors for lower anxiety and depression scores. Type of diabetes, insulin use, marital status and models of care were not significant predictors of anxiety and depression scores.CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with diabetes is considerably higher than in general population samples. These data serve as a benchmark for the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with diabetes.

Psychiatric Comorbidity among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Abstract:Background The co-occurrence of psychiatric conditions and diabetes mellitus is frequently observed. This coexistence manifests in various ways, leading to a diminished quality of life, heightened healthcare expenses, reduced treatment compliance, suboptimal blood sugar control, and an upsurge in visits to the emergency room. Objective To evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes at a specialized medical center. Method We conducted a cross-sectional study, enrolling eligible type 2 diabetes patients who sought outpatient services. To evaluate the cognitive and emotional aspects of their illness, we employed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and ICD-10 guidelines. Convenience sampling method was used and 200 patients were included in the study. Their socio-demographic profile, presence of depression, and other psychiatric illnesses were studied. Result Among the total screened type 2 diabetes patients, 200 eligible individuals were included in the study. Depression emerged as the most prevalent psychiatric comorbid condition, affecting 30.5% of the patients. Notably, depression rates were slightly higher in female patients and those over 50 years of age. Furthermore, individuals with longer diabetes durations displayed a greater prevalence of depressive episodes, followed by other psychiatric illnesses. Conclusion A noteworthy proportion of diabetic patients exhibited comorbid psychiatric conditions. Depression was the most common among diabetics followed by other psychiatric illnesses. The presence of neuropsychiatric illness was commonly seen in diabetics at a later age of life, peaking after 6th decade.
Association between depression and diabetes among American adults using NHANES data from 2005 to 2020

Abstract:Depression impairs self-management in diabetic patients, exacerbates insulin resistance, and elevates glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, thereby increasing diabetes risk. This study analyzed data from 30,386 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), assessing depression severity using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and evaluating diabetes status through clinical markers such as HbA1c, random blood glucose, and fasting blood glucose. Participants were stratified by depression severity and diabetes status to examine the relationship between depression and diabetes risk. We applied descriptive statistics, logistic regression models, subgroup analyses, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) modeling to explore this association. The results revealed that greater depression severity was significantly associated with increased diabetes incidence, elevated HbA1c, fasting glucose, and insulin levels. Multivariate regression analysis confirmed a consistent positive correlation between depression severity and diabetes risk. Subgroup analyses further identified significant relationships between depression and various demographic and behavioral factors, including gender, race, BMI, smoking status, and prediabetic conditions. Additionally, the RCS model demonstrated a clear increase in diabetes risk with rising PHQ-9 scores. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that the severity of depression is positively correlated with the risk of diabetes, and this association may be closely linked to various glycemic and lipid metabolic parameters.

Abstract:Background: Depression and diabetes mellitus (DM) are major chronic noncommunicable diseases that impair one's mental and physical well-being and impose substantial burdens on the health system. Depressed individuals have an increased risk of impaired blood glucose, weight gain and dyslipidemia which could induce poorer long-term survival. Methods: 37,040 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and classified by the total scores as no (0-4), mild (5-9), moderate (10-14), and severe (15-27). DM was determined based on selfreported medical history, clinical test results, and medication use. Logistic and Cox regression were the main statistical models. All analyses were based on weighted data from complex sampling. Results: The prevalence of DM was higher in depressed than non-depressed individuals (21.26 % vs. 13.75 %). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95 % CI) of comorbid DM increased with depression severity, from 1.00 (reference) for no depression, to 1.22 (1.09,1.36) for mild, 1.62 (1.37,1.92) for moderate, and 1.52(1.28,1.82) for severe depression. Comorbidity of DM and depression significantly associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality, with a hazard ratio (HR) (95 % CI) = 2.09 (1.64,2.66). Limitations: Dynamic demographic and metabolic data were not available. Conclusion: Depression is associated with a higher risk of DM, which may be related to biological, socioeconomic, and medication-related factors. Comorbidity of the two worsens long-term survival. Therefore, blood glucose management and prevention of DM should be emphasized in depressed patients.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of depression and its risk factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to evaluate depression in 2 966 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients [ male 1 463,female 1 503,age ( 56.4 ± 11.2 ) years,diabetes duration ( 6.3 ± 5.7 ) years ].Depression criteria:≤4 points,no depression group; 5-13 points,mild depression group; 14-20 points,moderate depression group; 21 points or higher,severe depression group.Meanwhile,the demographic and metabolic data and diabetes-related health behaviors were also investigated.The risk factors associated with depression were screened by logistic regression.Results 51％ patients had depression,including 38％ with mild,8％ with moderate,and 5％ with severe depression.Compared with no depression group,depression was correlated with female sex,low-annual income,diabetes education,diabetes treatment,with insulin and peripheral neuropathy( P＜0.01 ).More smoking and younger age were found in severe depression( P＜0.05 ).Partial correlation analysis showed that depression in type 2 diabetes mellitus was positively correlated with female sex,diabetes education,and peripheral neuropathy ; and negatively correlated with age (P＜0.05).Conditional logistic regression equation showed that gender( OR =1.37 ),age ( 20-40 years,OR =1.52 ),diabetes education ( OR =1.51 ),and peripheral neuropathy ( OR =1.87 ) were risk factors for depression.Conclusion Depression is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus.More attention should be paid to screening depression in clinical practice.

Abstract:Objective To understand the depression status of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and analyze the risk factors.Methods A total of 247 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were inquired(crosssection study) and assessed with Zung self-rating depression scale(SDS)for depression prevalence and depression severity.Meanwhile,effects of gender,age,occupation,education,income,body weight index(BMI),disease duration,treatment,glucose control,blood glucose level,hypertension,dyslipidemia and complications on depression prevalence and score were investigated and compared,and their correlations were analyzed.Results The prevalence of depression(49.8%) and the score of SDS(35.58±10.44) in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were higher than those of the control group(31.04±7.31 and 8.5%,P=0.000 and P=0.000).The scores of SDS(44.20±7.33) and prevalence(86.67%) in the patients aged 40-49 years old were higher than those of other age groups significantly(P0.05).Depressive status in in-service brainwork and physical work patients was more severe than that in retired population(P0.05).The SDS scores and depression rate in anti-diabetic drug group and combination therapy group were higher than those in lifestyle intervention group(P0.05).Age and chronic diabetic complications were independent risk factors of depression based on regression analysis.Patients with poor glucose control,hypertension and chronic complications were more severe in depression status according to Pearson correlation analysis.Conclusion Depression can be easily observed in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.The individuals who are middle-aged,on the job,with poor blood glucose control,hypertension and chronic complications are more prone to be depressive.

Abstract:Depression is more common in people with type 2 diabetes than in the genera Background and Objective: l population. Metabolic consequences of diabetes can dent nerves and vasculature, impairing brain functioning and subsequently causing depression. Depression and diabetes could affect the treatment and outcomes of both disorders simultaneously. The objective of the study was to assess the sociodemographic prole, the severity of depression, and adherence among type 2 diabetic patients.Poor adherence to treatment at large affects the course and prognosis of the disease This study is a Materials and Methods: hospital-based, cross-sectional study that was done from November 2021 to May 2022 with permission from the ethical; committee. The study was conducted among 95 Type2 diabetic patients who were on treatment in tertiary care centers. All of them fullled the inclusion criteria. Assessment of depression was done by PHQ-9 and CRS scales were used for this study. In our study majority of our participants a Results: mong 95 type 2 diabetic patients the majority belonging to the age group of 41-60 were married, males from urban backgrounds, and unemployed having primary education. The majority had an HBA1C level of>6.5% and a lower adherence rate. Depression is common among diabet Conclusion: ic patients. The analysis revealed that depression among type 2 diabetic patients needs to be evaluated at an early stage with an emphasis on compliance or adherence to treatment protocols. Abstract:Background: Adults with type 2 diabetes are at a greater probability of suffering from mental health issues, which could result in a substantial effect on their HRQoL (health-related quality of life). Thus, the focus of this research was to investigate the relationship between comorbid anxiety, depression, and HRQoL among individuals with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey from 2016 to 2021 were used to identify adult patients with type 2 diabetes diagnoses for this research. The MEPS used the SF-12 to measure HRQoL. The study employed multivariable linear regression to analyze the association between anxiety, depression, and HRQoL in individuals with type 2 diabetes, taking into consideration several confounding variables such as age, gender, and comorbidities. Results: This study included 5259 individuals with type 2 diabetes, of which the mean age was 52.9 years, 50.7% were men, and 49.3% were women. The findings from this sample show a negative relationship between anxiety, depression, and type 2 diabetic patients' HRQoL. It shows that after adjusting for other factors, diabetes patients with depression (MCS: = −6.817), anxiety (MCS: = −4.957), and both (MCS: = −0.344) have a significantly poorer HRQoL than those without these mental health comorbidities (p-value < 0.001). It also demonstrated the adverse effects on HRQoL of having coexisting chronic illnesses like heart disease, hypertension, and other chronic illnesses, along with a low socioeconomic status. Additionally, it revealed the benefits of employment, education, and regular exercise for HRQoL. Conclusions: The study's findings highlight the links between anxiety, depression, and type 2 diabetes patients' poor HRQoL. It also showed the adverse effects of coexisting chronic diseases and low socioeconomic status on HRQoL and the benefit of work and exercise on HRQoL. These findings can help policymakers to reform healthcare and enforce the early detection and treatment of anxiety and depression to enhance the HRQoL of type 2 diabetic patients.
