Abstract:The fundamental understanding of electrochemistry urges accurate knowledge of all interfacial properties at the molecular level, but the retrieval of such information is a real challenge. Optical spectroscopies facilitated by surface plasmon enhancement can shed light on this field, yet past studies relied on either highly inhomogeneous "hot spots" or planar plasmon modes with limited enhancement. Here we report an in situ sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy scheme using plasmonic nanogratings, which enable strong, coherent surface plasmon excitation even on planar electrodes. With two classical reactions, the gold oxidation and pyridine adsorption in water, we demonstrate the realization of coherent vibrational spectroscopy in the strong absorption region, revealing the polar orientation and ordering of interfacial species that are crucial toward the mechanistic understanding of electrochemical phenomena.

Abstract:Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) is a powerful method to probe the coherent electron dynamics in complicated systems. Stabilizing the phase difference of the incident ultrashort pulses is the most challenging part for experimental demonstration of 2DES. Here, we present a tutorial review on the 2DES protocols based on active phase managements which are originally developed for quantum optics experiments. We introduce the 2DES techniques in box and pump-probe geometries with phase stabilization realized by interferometry, and outline the fully collinear 2DES approach with the frequency tagging by acoustic optical modulators and frequency combs. The combination of active phase managements, ultrashort pulses and other spectroscopic methods may open new opportunities to tackle essential challenges related to excited states.

Abstract:We present a passively phase-stabilized two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) with a compact size, and the ease of implementation and maintenance. Our design relies on a mask beam-splitter with four holes to form non-collinear box geometry, and a homebuilt stacked retroreflector, which introduces the phase-locked pulse sequence, remedying the instability of commonly used translation stages. The minimized size of the setup suppresses the influences of optical path-length fluctuations during measurements, improving the phase stability and precise timing of pulse sequences. In our 2DES, only few conventional optical components are used, which make this sophisticated instrumentation convenient to establish and particularly easy to conduct alignment. In data analysis, the self-referencing spectral interferometry (SRSI) method is first introduced to extract the complex-valued signal from spectral interferometry in 2DES. The alternative algorithm achieves the improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and considerable reduction of data acquisition time. The new setup is suitable over a tunable range of spectroscopic wavelength, from ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR) regime, and for ultra-broadband bandwidth, few-cycle laser pulses.
Phase-cycling and double-quantum two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy using a common-path birefringent interferometer

Abstract:Selecting distinct quantum pathways in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) can give particularly deep insights into coherent and incoherent interactions and quantum dynamics in various materials. This includes isolating rephasing and non-rephasing pathways for conventional single-quantum 2DES, but also the ability to record double- and zero-quantum spectra. Such advanced 2DES schemes usually require phase-cycling when performed in a partially or fully collinear geometry. A particularly simple and effective implementation of 2DES utilizes an in-line birefringent interferometer, the Translating-Wedge-based Identical pulses eNcoding System (TWINS), for the generation of an inherently phase-stable collinear excitation pulse pair. Here, we demonstrate how the TWINS can be adapted to allow for phase-cycling and experimental access to isolated quantum pathways. These new capabilities are demonstrated by recording rephasing, non-rephasing, zero-quantum and double-quantum 2DES on a molecular J-aggregate. This easy-to-implement extension opens up new experimental possibilities for TWINS-based 2DES in multidimensional all-optical and photoemission spectroscopy and microscopy.

Integration of Conventional Surface Science Techniques with Surface-Sensitive Azimuthal and Polarization Dependent Femtosecond-Resolved Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

Abstract:Experimental insight into the elementary processes underlying charge transfer across interfaces has blossomed with the wide-spread availability of ultra-high vacuum set-ups that allow the preparation and characterization of solid surfaces with well-defined molecular adsorbates over a wide ranges of temperatures. Thick layers of molecular adsorbates or heterostructures of 2D materials generally preclude the use of electrons or atoms as probes in such characterization. However with linear photon-in/photon-out techniques it is often challenging to assign the observed optical response to a particular portion of the interface. We and prior workers have demonstrated in work under ambient conditions that by full characterization of the symmetry of the second order nonlinear optical susceptibility, i.e. the $\chi^{(2)}$, in sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, this problem can be overcome. Here we describe an ultra-high vacuum system built to allow conventional UHV sample preparation and characterization, femtosecond and polarization resolved SFG spectroscopy, the azimuthal sample rotation necessary to fully describe $\chi^{(2)}$ symmetry and with sufficient stability to allow scanning SFG microscopy. We demonstrate these capabilities in proof-of-principle measurements on CO adsorbed on Pt(111) and of the clean Ag(111) surface. Because this set-up allows both full characterization of the nonlinear susceptibility and the temperature control and sample preparation/characterization of conventional UHV set-ups we expect it to be of great utility in investigation of both the basic physics and applications of solid, 2D material heterostructures.

Abstract:We introduce a novel configuration for two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) that combines the partially collinear pump-probe geometry with active phase locking. We demonstrate the method on a solution sample of CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals by employing two non-collinear optical parametric amplifiers as the pump and probe sources. The two collinear pump pulse replicas are created using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer phase stabilized by active feedback electronics. Taking the advantage of separated paths of the two pump pulses in the interferometer, we improve the signal-to-noise ratio with double modulation of the individual pump beams. In addition, a quartz wedge pair manipulates the phase difference between the two pump pulses, enabling the recovery of the rephasing and non-rephasing signals. Our setup integrates many advantages of available 2DES techniques with robust phase stabilization, ultrafast time resolution, two-color operation, long delay scan, individual polarization manipulation and the ease of implementation.(C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Abstract Liquid interfaces are unique environments in which a variety of fundamental phenomena occur. Therefore, it is important to obtain a molecular-level understanding of liquid interfaces for both basic science and industrial applications. However, it is not an easy task to investigate molecules in the interface region that only has nanometer thicknesses. Second-order nonlinear spectroscopy, or even-order nonlinear spectroscopy more generally, is intrinsically interface-selective because the relevant nonlinear signal is generated only in the region in which the inversion symmetry is broken under the dipole approximation. In the past 2 decades, we have been developing and applying new interface nonlinear spectroscopic methods, aiming to bring up the level of knowledge on interfacial molecules to that on molecules in solution. During this attempt, we developed electronic sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, heterodyne-detected electronic sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, and heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, as well as fourth-order Raman spectroscopy. We also extended the methods to femtosecond time-resolved measurements. Using these methods, we are now able to study the structure and dynamics at liquid interfaces, in particular exposed interfaces such as air/liquid interfaces, at a similar level to the study for solution. I overview our interface research while describing thoughts we had at each turning point.

Abstract:We present a rapid-scanning approach to fluorescence-detected two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy that combines acousto-optic phase-modulation with digital lock-in detection. The approach shifts the signal detection window to suppress 1/f laser noise and enables interferometric tracking of the time delays to allow for correction of spectral phase distortions and accurate phasing of the data. This use of digital lock-in detection enables acquisition of linear and nonlinear signals of interest in a single measurement. We demonstrate the method on a laser dye, measuring the linear fluorescence excitation spectrum, as well as rephasing, non-rephasing and absorptive fluorescence-detected two-dimensional electronic spectra.

Abstract:Femtosecond coherence spectroscopy is a family of ultrafast techniques that utilize ultrafast laser pulses to prepare and monitor coherent states in resonant or non-resonant samples. Among coherence spectroscopies, 2D electronic spectroscopy (2DES) techniques have recently gained particular interest given their capability of following ultrafast processes in real-time. Indeed, 2DES is widely exploited nowadays to unveil subtle details of ultrafast relaxation dynamics, including energy and charge transport, in complex media such as biological and artificial light-harvesting complexes and solid-state materials. Particularly meaningful is the possibility of assessing coherent mechanisms active in the transport of excitation energy in these materials. With the development of promising new applications and rapidly evolving technical capabilities, the enormous potential of 2DES techniques to impact the field of nanosystems, quantum technologies, and quantum devices is here delineated. Two examples illustrate this aim: semiconductor quantum dots solid-state materials and colloidal suspensions of plexciton nanohybrids.

Abstract:Sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a ubiquitous tool in the surface sciences. It provides infrared transition frequencies and line shapes that probe the structure and environment of molecules at interfaces. In this article, we apply techniques learned from the multidimensional spectroscopy community to SFG spectroscopy. We implement balanced heterodyne detection to remove scatter and the local oscillator background. Heterodyning also separates the resonant and nonresonant signals by acquiring both the real and imaginary parts of the spectrum. We utilize mid-IR pulse shaping to control the phase and delay of the mid-IR pump pulse. Pulse shaping allows phase cycling for data collection in the rotating frame and additional background subtraction. We also demonstrate time-domain data collection, which is a Fourier transform technique, and has many advantages in signal throughput, frequency resolution, and line shape accuracy over existing frequency domain methods. To demonstrate time-domain SFG spectroscopy, we study an aryl isocyanide on gold, and find that the system has an inhomogeneous structural distribution, in agreement with computational results, but which was not resolved by previous frequency-domain SFG studies. The ability to rapidly and actively manipulate the mid-IR pulse in an SFG pules sequence makes possible new experiments and more accurate spectra.
Phase measurement in nonlinear optics of molecules at air/water interface with femtosecond laser pulses

Abstract:There are less than a handful of papers in the literature on the phase measurement of surface Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) from liquid interfaces, in sharp contrast to tens of the works on such measurement of films on solid substrate surfaces. Even though the SHG phase measurement is very important for obtaining structural and spectroscopic information, such as molecular orientation, at the liquid interfaces, experimentally there are many difficulties due to the intrinsically weak SH signal of liquid interfaces. Using a femtosecond pulsed laser and photon counting system, we have demonstrate the ability to measure the SH phase for the non-resonant neat air/water interface, which is clearly among the systems with the smallest surface SH susceptibility, and is well below the detection limit of experimental setups in most laboratories. After clarifying some confusions about the reference standards for absolute SH phase measurement using the a-quartz crystal, we used air/water interface as an intrinsic SH phase reference standard to measure the SH phases of some air/pure-liquid interfaces, and adsorbed molecular layers at the air/water interface. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of this very sensitive technique in obtaining molecular structural and spectroscopic information of liquid interfaces.

Abstract:Electronic structure and dynamics are captured by optical 2D-Fourier-transform (2DFT) spectroscopy, which tracks the phase of the nonlinear signal during two time delays of a multi-pulse excitation sequence. These Fourier-transformed spectra separate and isolate overlapping and competing contributions to the coherent response. We have developed an ultra-stable platform consisting of nested interferometers with active phase control, allowing for exploration of single- and two-quantum coherences. Phase-resolved spectra are retrieved by all-optical determination of experimental phase ambiguities. GaAs quantum wells show suppression of many-body interactions in cross-linear polarized 2DFT spectra and many-body two-quantum coherences. Potassium vapor also shows unexpected two-quantum coherences.
Solution-phase single-particle spectroscopy for probing multi-polaronic dynamics in quantum emitters at femtosecond resolution

Abstract:The development of many optical quantum technologies depends on the availability of solid-state single quantum emitters with near-perfect optical coherence. However, a standing issue that limits systematic improvement is the significant sample heterogeneity and lack of mechanistic understanding of microscopic energy flow at the single emitter level and ultrafast timescales. Here we develop solution-phase single-particle pump-probe spectroscopy with photon correlation detection that captures sample-averaged dynamics in single molecules and/or defect states with unprecedented clarity at femtosecond resolution. We apply this technique to single quantum emitters in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride, which suffers from significant heterogeneity and low quantum efficiency. From millisecond to nanosecond timescales, the translation diffusion, metastable-state-related bunching shoulders, rotational dynamics, and antibunching features are disentangled by their distinct photon-correlation timescales, which collectively quantify the normalized two-photon emission quantum yield. Leveraging its femtosecond resolution, spectral selectivity and ultralow noise (two orders of magnitude improvement over solid-state methods), we visualize electron-phonon coupling in the time domain at the single defect level, and discover the acceleration of polaronic formation driven by multi-electron excitation. Corroborated with results from a theoretical polaron model, we show how this translates to sample-averaged photon fidelity characterization of cascaded emission efficiency and optical decoherence time. Our work provides a framework for ultrafast spectroscopy in single emitters, molecules, or defects prone to photoluminescence intermittency and heterogeneity, opening new avenues of extreme-scale characterization and synthetic improvements for quantum information applications.

Extracting double-quantum coherence in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy under pump-probe geometry

Abstract:Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) can be implemented with different geometries, e.g., BOXCARS, collinear and pump-probe geometries. The pump-probe geometry has its advantage of overlapping only two beams and reducing phase cycling steps. However, its applications are typically limited to observe the dynamics with single-quantum coherence and population, leaving the challenge to measure the dynamics of the double-quantum (2Q) coherence, which reflects the many-body interactions. We propose an experimental technique in 2DES under pump-probe geometry with a designed pulse sequence and the signal processing method to extract 2Q coherence. In the designed pulse sequence with the probe pulse arriving earlier than pump pulses, our measured signal includes the 2Q signal as well as the zero-quantum (0Q) signal. With phase cycling and the data processing using causality enforcement, we extract the 2Q signal. The proposal is demonstrated with the rubidium atoms. And we observe the collective resonances of two-body dipole-dipole interactions of both $D_{1}$ and $D_{2}$ lines.

Abstract:Sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy provides a unique optical probe for interfacial molecules with interface-specificity and molecular specificity. SFG measurements can be further carried out at different polarization combinations, but the target of the polarization-dependent SFG is conventionally limited to investigating the molecular orientation. Here, we explore the possibility of polarization-dependent SFG (PD-SFG) measurements with heterodyne detection (HD-PD-SFG). We stress that HD-PD-SFG enables accurate determination of the peak amplitude, a key factor of the PD-SFG data. Subsequently, we outline that HD-PD-SFG can be used not only for estimating the molecular orientation but also for investigating the interfacial dielectric profile and studying the depth profile of molecules. We further illustrate the variety of combined simulation and PD-SFG studies.

Development of novel high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and related studies on surface excitations

Abstract:High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) is a powerful technique to probe vibrational and electronic excitations at solid surfaces. A monochromatic electron beam incident on the crystal surface may interact with the vibrations of adsorbed molecules, surface phonons or electronic excitations before being back-scattered. By analyzing the energy and momentum of the scattered electrons, we can obtain the information about the chemical bonds, lattice dynamics, occupation of electronic states, and surface plasmons. However the application of traditional HREELS to dispersion analyses is restricted by its point-by-point measurement of the energy loss spectrum for each momentum. Recently, a new strategy for HREELS was realized by utilizing a specially designed lens system with a double-cylindrical monochromator combined with a commercial Scienta hemispherical electron energy analyzer, which can be used to simultaneously measure the energy and momentum of the scattered electrons. The new system possesses improved momentum resolution, high detecting efficiency and high sampling density with no loss in energy resolution. The new HREELS system was employed to study the mechanism of the superconductivity enhancement at FeSe/SrTiO3 interface. By surface phonon measurements on samples with different film thickness, it is revealed that the electric field associated with phonon modes of SrTiO3 substrate can penetrate into FeSe film and interact with the electrons therein, playing the key role in the superconductivity enhancement. The surface collective modes of three-dimensional topological insulator was also studied by using this new HREELS system. A highly unusual acoustic plasmon mode is revealed on the surface of a typical three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3. This mode exhibits an almost linear dispersion to the second Brouillion zone center without reflecting lattice periodicity, and it remains prominent over a large momentum range, with unusually weak damping unseen in any other system. This observation indicates that the topological protection exists not only in single-particle topological states but also in their collective excitations. The application of the new HREELS system with the ability to measure large momentum range with high-efficiency, will definitely promote the development of related researches on condensed matter physics.

Abstract:Electronic energy transfer in photosynthesis occurs over a range of time scales and under a variety of intermolecular coupling conditions. Recent work has shown that electronic coupling between chromophores can lead to coherent oscillations in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy measurements of pigment-protein complexes measured with femtosecond laser pulses. A persistent issue in the field is to reconcile the results of measurements performed using femtosecond laser pulses with physiological illumination conditions. Noisy-light spectroscopy can begin to address this question. In this work we present the theoretical analysis of incoherent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy, I(4) 2D ES. Simulations reveal diagonal peaks, cross peaks, and coherent oscillations similar to those observed in femtosecond two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy experiments. The results also expose fundamental differences between the femtosecond-pulse and noisy-light techniques; the differences lead to new challenges and new opportunities.

Abstract:Two-dimensional Fourier transform (2D FT) spectroscopy is an important technology that developed in recent decades and has many advantages over other ultrafast spectroscopy methods. Although 2D FT spectroscopy provides great opportunities for studying various complex systems, the experimental implementation and theoretical description of 2D FT spectroscopy measurement still face many challenges, which limits their wide application. Recently, the 2D FT spectroscopy reaches maturity due to many new developments which greatly reduces the technical barrier in the experimental implementation of the 2D FT spectrometer. There have been several different approaches developed for the optical design of the 2D FT spectrometer, each with its own advantages and limitations. Thus, a procedure to help an experimentalist to build a 2D FT spectroscopy experimental apparatus is needed. This tutorial review is intending to provide an accessible introduction for a beginner to build a 2D FT spectrometer.

Abstract:Doubly-resonant infrared–visible sum-frequency generation (DR-SFG) as a two-dimensional surface spectroscopy was demonstrated experimentally for the first time. Probing electronic and vibrational transitions of a surface molecular monolayer simultaneously, the technique gives access to information about the electron-vibration coupling of the surface molecules. It allows selective studies of any interface accessible by light.
