Abstract:The compact, simple, and fast-reaction pneumatic microactuator is significant for the integration and high efficiency of pneumatic systems. In this work, the structure, working principle, and multiphysical model of an on-chip pneumatic microactuator are presented. The on-chip pneumatic microactuator is mainly composed of two parts: a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin membrane and an actuated chamber. The air pressure in the actuated chamber drives the thin elastic membrane to deformation. Dynamic response mathematical models of the actuated chamber for charging and exhaust with variable volume are established, and the deformation characteristics of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) actuated membrane, the capacity of the actuated chamber, and the valve opening of the on-off membrane microvalve are simulated and analyzed to explore the response characteristics of the proposed pneumatic microactuator. Samples valving analysis of the on-chip membrane microvalve and mixing performance of the micromixer integrated with the pneumatic microactuator are tested to evaluate the driving capability of the pneumatic microactuator, and the results show that the response performance of the actuated time fully satisfies the needs of a pneumatic microfluidic chip for most applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method to fabricate a normally open micro pneumatic valve in rigid poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chips. The control and fluid substrates of the valve were prepared with PMMA sheets via hot embossing. After both control and fluid substrates were silanized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and treated with glow discharge plasma, each of them was irreversibly bonded to a plasma-treated PDMS membrane, forming a control half or a fluid half. Relying on the native adhesive force of the PDMS membrane, the control half and fluid half were then reversibly sealed to form a full microchip with the four-layer structure of PMMA-PDMA center dot center dot center dot PDMS-PMMA. The irreversible bonding between rigid PMMA substrate and elastic PDMS membrane in combination with the reversible sealing between the control half and fluid half not only eases the difficulties in chip bonding, but also allows the control half and fluid half to be replaced individually in routine analyses. The performance of the developed micro pneumatic valves was characterized, and potential applications of the valves in droplet generation and micro flow injection analysis were demonstrated.

Abstract:The flow characteristics of an oscillating flow including porous media are very important for designing oscillating-flow-based devices. A combined experimental and simulation study is carried out to provide a comprehensive quantitative understanding of the oscillating flows. The cycle rate through porous media, a particularly basic parameter, is proposed based on the dimensionless pressure drop as a correction factor for the similarity parameters of the oscillating flows. A modified dimensionless fluid displacement is introduced based on the cycle rate, and a correlation equation is proposed to calculate the cycle-averaged friction factor of porous media. Significant phase difference (7-71 degrees) is observed between the movements of gas inside porous media and pistons, which increases with the increasing pressure drop of porous media. Another correlation equation is proposed to predict the phase difference. It should be noted that the pressure drop of porous media would also affect the flows inside other heat exchangers between cylinder and porous media. The mass flow rate next to the cylinder is very different from that adjacent to the porous media in terms of amplitude and phase difference. Mass flow rates at different cross sections vary linearly with the volume between the piston upper surface and the monitored cross section. Finally, a quantitative method is proposed to describe the flow characteristics of an oscillating flow including porous media, which is expected to improve the design methods of oscillating-flow based devices. Frequency Dependence and Frequency Control of Microbubble Streaming Flows

Abstract:Steady streaming from oscillating microbubbles is a powerful actuating mechanism in microfluidics, enjoying increased use due to its simplicity of manufacture, ease of integration, low heat generation, and unprecedented control over the flow field and particle transport. As the streaming flow patterns are caused by oscillations of microbubbles in contact with walls of the set-up, an understanding of the bubble dynamics is crucial. Here we experimentally characterize the oscillation modes and the frequency response spectrum of such cylindrical bubbles, driven by a pressure variation resulting from ultrasound in the range of 1 kHz less than or similar to f less than or similar to 100 kHz. We find that (i) the appearance of 2D streaming flow patterns is governed by the relative amplitudes of bubble azimuthal surface modes (normalized by the volume response), (ii) distinct, robust resonance patterns occur independent of details of the set-up, and (iii) the position and width of the resonance peaks can be understood using an asymptotic theory approach. This theory describes, for the first time, the shape oscillations of a pinned cylindrical bubble at a wall and gives insight into necessary mode couplings that shape the response spectrum. Having thus correlated relative mode strengths and observed flow patterns, we demonstrate that the performance of a bubble micromixer can be optimized by making use of such flow variations when modulating the driving frequency. Controlling biomedical devices using pneumatic logic

Abstract:Many biomedical devices are powered and controlled by electrical components. These electronics add to the cost of a device (possibly making the device too expensive for use in resource-limited or point-of-care settings) and can also render the device unsuitable for use in some environments (for example, high-humidity areas like incubators where condensation could cause electrical short circuits, ovens where electronic components may overheat, or explosive or flammable environments where electric sparks could cause serious accidents). In this work, we show that pneumatic logic can be used to power and control biomedical devices without the need for electricity or electric components. Originally developed for controlling microfluidic “lab-on-a-chip” devices, these circuits use microfluidic valves like transistors in air-powered logic “circuits.” We show that a modification to the basic valve design—adding additional air channels in parallel through the valve—creates a “high-flow” valve that is suitable for controlling a broad range of bioinstruments, not just microfluidics. As a proof-of-concept, we developed a high-flow pneumatic oscillator that uses five high-flow Boolean NOT gates arranged in a loop. Powered by a single constant vacuum source, the oscillator provides five out-of-phase pneumatic outputs that switch between vacuum and atmospheric pressure every 1.3 seconds. Additionally, a user can adjust the frequency of the oscillator by squeezing a bellows attached to one of the pneumatic outputs. We then used the pneumatic oscillator to power a low-cost 3D-printed laboratory rocker/shaker commonly used to keep blood products, cell cultures, and other heterogenous samples in suspension. Our air-powered rocker costs around $5 USD to build and performs as well as conventional electronic rockers that cost $1000 USD or more. This is the first of many biomedical devices that can be made cheaper and safer using pneumatic logic.

Transient compressible flow in a compliant viscoelastic tube

Abstract:Motivated by problems arising in the pneumatic actuation of controllers for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), labs-on-a-chip or biomimetic soft robots, and the study of microrheology of both gases and soft solids, we analyze the transient fluid--structure interaction (FSIs) between a viscoelastic tube conveying compressible flow at low Reynolds number. We express the density of the fluid as a linear function of the pressure, and we use the lubrication approximation to further simplify the fluid dynamics problem. On the other hand, the structural mechanics is governed by a modified Donnell shell theory accounting for Kelvin--Voigt-type linearly viscoelastic mechanical response. The fluid and structural mechanics problems are coupled through the tube's radial deformation and the hydrodynamic pressure. For small compressibility numbers and weak coupling, the equations are solved analytically via a perturbation expansion. Three illustrative problems are analyzed. First, we obtain exact (but implicit) solutions for the pressure for steady flow conditions. Second, we solve the transient problem of impulsive pressurization of the tube's inlet. Third, we analyze the transient response to an oscillatory inlet pressure. We show that an oscillatory inlet pressure leads to acoustic streaming in the tube, attributed to the nonlinear pressure gradient induced by the interplay of FSI and compressibility. Furthermore, we demonstrate an enhancement in the volumetric flow rate due to FSI coupling. The hydrodynamic pressure oscillations are shown to exhibit a low-pass frequency response (when averaging over the period of oscillations), while the frequency response of the tube deformation is similar to that of a band-pass filter.

Abstract:Microfluidic chips are considered to be one of the main controllers for future pneumatic flexible actuators. An oscillator is the most direct way to generate a pressure cycle signal, which drives an actuator to reciprocate. Based on the principle of a fluid equivalent circuit and membrane microvalve structure, the working characteristics of a microfluidic single-gate oscillator are described in this paper. This device can produce an oscillation pressure signal at frequencies over 80 Hz with a certain frequency stability. The results show that the operating characteristics of the oscillator are affected by the flow resistance, air cavity and input pressure. This research also provides a new potential application method for robot control in environments unfriendly to electronic devices, such as strong electric fields, strong magnetic fields and underwater environments.

Abstract:The effect of liquid compressibility on flow delays in syringe‐pump driven applications is fully characterized experimentally. Long time delays, up to tens of minutes, can be experienced depending on the syringe volume, microchannel resistance and liquid type. The effect of flexibility of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) channels is also considered and a lumped‐electric circuit model is presented to simplify the analysis. The purpose of this study is to characterize the dynamic response of fluid flow in microchannels, which can show significant delay times before reaching steady flow conditions. Two main sources of these delays are numerically and experimentally investigated, the hydraulic compliance which originates from the flexibility of the system components (microchannel, tubing, syringe, etc.), and the compressibility of the liquid dead volume in the setup, also known as the "bottleneck effect". A fluid‐structure interaction model is presented for the compliance of rectangular PDMS microchannels that is used to form a numerically based relation for the compliance as a function of the pressure and geometry. This relation is successfully able to predict the dynamics of the flow inside PDMS microchannels in stop‐flow experiments. The time delays associated with the bottleneck effect is also shown when using different syringe volumes, microchannel resistances, and liquid types. In these tests, the bottleneck effect has a much larger effect compared to the compliance of the PDMS microchannels. This is true even when using softer PDMS by increasing the monomer‐to‐curing agent mixing ratio. The characterization that is presented here allows for a simple analysis of microfluidic networks using the hydraulic‐circuit approach.

Abstract:The present study optimized some novel fluidic oscillator designs, measured their internal–external fluid dynamics, and used modal analysis to reveal their underlying oscillation mechanisms. It also investigated the effects of structural parameters on their fluid dynamics (including inlet-wedge width , feedback-channel inlet width , and mixing-chamber Coandă surface). The time-resolved internal–external pressure fields of the oscillators were determined by using pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) measurement. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) were used for modal analysis and phase reconstruction. The time-averaged pressure field and phase reconstruction results reveal that recirculation bubbles inside the mixing chamber and the feedback flow have underpinned the mechanism of formation of internal and external continuous sweeping flows. The modal analysis results reveal the spatial modal structures and their time evolution, which dominated the internal–external flow pattern. The inlet-wedge width and feedback-channel inlet diameter were found to be the structural parameters affecting feedback flow and recirculation bubble size and thereby influenced flow characteristics such as jet oscillation frequency and divergence angle. Different Coandă surfaces altered the recirculation bubbles and feedback flow of the mainstream, thereby influencing the formation mechanism of the sweeping jet.

Abstract:A fluidic oscillator consisting of a bistable fluidic element and two chambers is proposed. Each outlet of the fluidic element is connected with a chamber and feeds back to control channel. Experimental data with various survey pressure illustrate that the main parameters influencing the oscillating frequency, such as the supply air pressure, the length of feedback pipeline and the volume of the oscillating chamber. The working principle of the oscillator is analysed and provides experimental and theoretical evidence for its using.
An Air-Chamber-based Microfluidic Stabilizer for Attenuating Syringe-Pump-induced Fluctuations

Abstract:Syringe pumps are commonly used in microfluidic systems to provide flows with precise control. But small periodic fluctuations on flow induced by the stepper motor in syringe pumps are a problem that influences the characteristics of the microfluidic system. This paper presents a microfluidic stabilizer which contains an air chamber. A specific amount of air is sealed in the air chamber and will attenuate the flow fluctuations by expanding or shrinking its volume. A theoretical model based on Euler equation is developed to clarify the characteristics of the microfluidic stabilizer. The result of simulations by finite element analysis is in good agreement with the theoretical model. A new method based on fluorescence detection and three-dimensional hydrodynamic focusing is developed to measure the flow fluctuations induced by the pumps and also to characterize the buffering capacity of the stabilizer. It is experimentally demonstrated that the fluctuation amplitude is cut to 46% by one microfluidic stabilizer and reduced to 14% by two series connected stabilizers.

Abstract:Fluidics is one of the most historic subjects that are well-established over centuries on the macroscopic scale. In recent years, fluid detection using a number of micro/nano scale devices has been achieved. However, the interaction of microfluid and solid devices on micro/nano-meter scale still lacks in-depth research. We demonstrate a practical nanomechanical detector for microfluidics via a string resonator with high Q-factor, suspended over a hole. This device is placed under a jet nozzle with several microns of diameter, and the interaction between the micro-gas flow and the resonator is observed by monitoring the variation of the fundamental frequency and the quality factor. Moreover, we manage to measure the fluctuations of the micro-gas flow on the nanomechanical resonator by means of stochastic resonance. This work manifests a potential platform for detecting dynamical fluid behaviors at microscopic scale for novel fluid physics.
Computational and experimental study of the synchronization strategies of two pulsing jet fluidic oscillators

Abstract:Fluidic oscillators are interesting actuators for flow control purposes as they produce unsteady jets without any moving part. Flow separation control in a large scale, for instance on a wing, needs an array of such actuators, whose efficiency can be improved if the pulsed jets are synchronized. In this paper, two synchronization configurations based on interconnections of the feedback loops have been applied successfully to two bi-stable fluidic oscillators. The first configuration permits to obtain jets pulsating at a similar frequency as the jets produced by the oscillators working separately. The second configuration, which differs by the interconnection pattern, leads to a much lower frequency. Two different phase lags between the jets produced by the two oscillators have also been identified, depending on the interconnection pattern. These experimental results have been completed by a numerical study of the internal flow patterns of the two oscillators for an in-depth analysis of the physical mechanisms controlling the oscillation dynamics. In the first synchronization configuration, the oscillation is shown to be mainly controlled by the back and forth propagation of pressure waves in the oscillators' branches and feedback loops and its frequency can be estimated by the same simple relation as the one used for single oscillators. In the second synchronization configuration, the jet switching time is no more negligible compared to the pressure waves propagation time, leading to more complex oscillation dynamics.

Investigation of the Dynamics of Cavitation Bubbles in a Microfluidic Channel with Actuations

Abstract:This work presents experimental and numerical studies on the dynamics of cavitation bubbles in a nozzle-shaped microfluidic channel with PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) actuations. It is found that a cloud of bubbles can be generated near the center of the microfluidic channel when the actuation voltage is larger than a threshold at 1 kHz. After being generated, the bubbles under actuations oscillate radially with violent expansion and compression, and simultaneously translate upstream towards the opening of the nozzle. Along with radial oscillation and translation, the bubbles undergo frequent and drastic coalescence and breakup, leading to vigorous churning of surrounding liquids. The pressure variation and distribution in the microchannel are calculated by numerical simulation in Ansys Fluent, and results show that there is a low-pressure zone inside the microfluidic channel within each cycle of the actuation period, which is responsible for bubble generation observed in the experiments. The method of bubble generation in this study is novel and can be applied for the enhancement of heat and mass transfer in microfluidic operations.

Abstract:Fluidic circuits are a promising recent development in embodied control of soft robots. These circuits typically make use of highly non-linear soft components to enable complex behaviors given simple inputs, such as constant flow or pressure. This approach greatly simplifies control, as it removes the need for external hardware or software. However, detailed fundamental understanding of the non-linear, coupled fluidic and mechanical behavior of these components is lacking. Such understanding is needed to guide new designs and increase the reliability of increasingly autonomous soft robots. Here, we develop an analytical model that captures the coexistence of a pressure regulation mode and an oscillatory mode in a specific soft hysteretic valve design, that we previously used to achieve reprogrammable activation patterns in soft robots. We develop a model that describes the mechanics, fluidics and dynamics of the system by two coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations. The model shows good agreement with the experimental evidence, as well as correctly predicts the effect of design changes. Specifically, we experimentally show that we can remove the regulation mode at low input flow rates by changing the fluidic response of the valve. Taken together, the present study contributes to better understanding of system-level behavior of fluidic circuits for controlling soft robots. This may contribute to the reliability of soft robots with embodied control in future applications such as autonomous exploration and medical prosthetic devices.

Microfluidic front dynamic for the characterization of pumps for long-term autonomous microsystems

Abstract:To facilitate the use and portability of Lab on a chip technology, it is desirable to avoid the use of bulky electronic systems for flow control. Developed self-powered microsystems typically move only small volumes of fluid performing up to one or two hours. We have previously shown that polymeric micropumps combined with plastic microfluidic cartridges constitute a universal self-powered modular microfluidic architecture suitable for moving large volumes of fluids in short times. Herein, we show that polymeric micropumps can provide self-powered flow control for long periods of time in the range of hours and days. The calibration curves of various types of micropumps were obtained including one that maintained the movement of the fluid for 23 hours, advancing the fluid front up to 1.8 meters through a channel with a section of 0.127 mm2. We found that the actuation time of the pump was related to degassing time, the effective surface area and the air recovery rate of the pump. This is the first example of a long operating self-powered microsystem, which may have a great impact in those cases where controlled flow is needed for a long period of time and the use of electronic equipment is not desirable.

Abstract:Syringe pumps are widely used biomedical equipment, which offer low-cost solutions to drive and control flow through microfluidic chips. However, they have been shown to transmit mechanical oscillations resulting from their stepper motors into the flow, perturbing device performance. These detrimental effects have mostly been reported on microdroplet production, but have never been reported on hydrodynamic two-phase separation, such as in microdevices making use of cell-free layer phenomena. While various mechanisms can be used to circumvent syringe pump oscillations, it is of interest to study the oscillation effects in naïve systems, which are common in research settings. Previous fluctuation studies focused on relatively low flow rates, typically below 5 ml/h, and showed a linear decay of the relative pressure fluctuations as a function of the flow rate. In this work, we have uncovered that the relative pressure fluctuations reach a plateau at higher flow rates, typically above 5 ml/h. Using a novel low-cost coded compressive rotating mirror camera, we investigated the effect of fluctuations in a hydrodynamic microfluidic separation device based on a cell-free layer concept. We demonstrated that cell-free zone width fluctuations have the same frequency and amplitude than the syringe pump-induced pressure oscillations and illustrated the subsequent degradation of particle separation. This work provides an insight into the effect of syringe pump fluctuations on microfluidic separation, which will inform the design of microfluidic systems and improve their resilience to pulsating or fluctuating flow conditions without the use of ancillary equipment.

On flow disturbances caused by pressure taps in highly elastic flows around a microfluidic cylinder

Abstract:The objective of this work is to characterise the onset of laterally asymmetric flow of viscoelastic solutions around a confined microfluidic cylinder, which was encountered in a recent study [Rodrigues et al., $\textit{J. Non-Newton. Fluid Mech.}$ $\textbf{289}$, 104406 (2020)]. To this end, two non-Newtonian fluids were employed in the same micro-geometry. Two microchannels were studied, both with a cylinder of diameter 75 $\mathrm{\mu}$m, aspect ratio (channel height over width) of 0.37 and blockage ratio (cylinder diameter over channel width) of 0.28, differing only on the width of the pressure taps, located 500 $\mathrm{\mu}$m up- and downstream from the respective cylinder face, on opposing walls. The working fluids consist of two poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions: a weakly shear-thinning elastic fluid and an elastic shear-thinning fluid. Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry ($\mathrm{\mu}$PIV) and streak imaging techniques were used to evaluate the flow over a Weissenberg number range: $100\leq Wi\leq500$, while maintaining a low Reynolds number, $Re<1$. The elastic shear-thinning solution showed laterally asymmetric flow past the cylinder with both pressure tap designs, while with the weakly shear-thinning solution asymmetric flow was only observed with the wider pressure tap intake. In both cases, the fluids preferentially chose the cylinder/wall gap opposing the upstream pressure tap, which was found to influence the flow greatly, seemingly associated with time-dependent flow and possibly the lateral flow asymmetry itself. This work brings to light the necessary compromise between optimal pressure tap design for quality pressure measurements and minimal flow interference, due to the increased susceptibility of elastic microfluidic flows to flow perturbations.

Abstract:A compact, rapid, and portable off-chip pneumatic control valve is significant for the miniaturization and integration of external pneumatic systems for microfluidic chips. In this work, an off-chip microvalve with a high-speed electromagnetic switch actuator and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material valve body has been designed to be easily encapsulated, simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software, and tested in a micromixer. Multi-physical coupling mathematical models are developed based on the elastic deformation force of the valve membrane, the driving force of the valve core, and the fluid force in the microchannel. Two single microvalves are used to form a three-way microvalve, which can control the air pressure in a pneumatic microchannel on the microfluidic chip. The relationship between the flow–duty cycle, the flow–pressure difference of the single electromagnetic microvalve, and the load pressure of the three-way microvalve is simulated and analyzed. Sample mixing performance controlled by the proposed off-chip three-way microvalve was tested to evaluate the pneumatic control capability, and the results show that the undertaking can fully satisfy the needs of a pneumatic microfluidic chip for most applications.
