Abstract:Background. Hemodynamic changes and consequent low-density lipoprotein (LDL) filtration play an important role in the atherosclerotic plaque development of coronary arteries. In this pilot controlled case study, we aimed to investigate the correlation between parameters derived from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and risks (both current and long-term) of coronary atherosclerosis. Methods. We reconstructed geometric models from the baseline computed tomography (CT) angiography of two subjects, one patient and one healthy control, and performed CFD simulations. We estimated the current risk of ischemia by fractional flow reserve (FFR). We estimated the potential risk of plaque development by wall shear stress (WSS) and LDL filtration rate with follow-up clinical imaging validation. We investigated the effects of simulation methods (transient/static) and rheological models (Newtonian/Carreau-Yasuda) by comparing the corresponding results (FFR, WSS and LDL filtration rate) in the patient's left anterior descending coronary artery. Results. In baseline CFD simulation, FFR indicated mild current ischemic risk of the patient, in accordance with existing angina pectoris. Baseline WSS and LDL filtration rate results were related with in vivo plaque development. The plaque-growth locations in follow-up CT angiogram coincided with areas of low WSS and high LDL filtration rate in the baseline simulation. The LDL filtration rate delineated more specific risky areas than WSS. Between transient and static results, the difference of FFR was less than 5% in the whole model. As to WSS and LDL filtration rate the transient/static difference was within 20% inmost areas, but rose up to 50% for WSS and even higher for LDL filtration rate, in areas with low WSS and high LDL filtration rate. As to rheological effects, Newtonian/Carreau-Yasuda difference was negligible for FFR throughout the model, within 30% for WSS and LDL filtration rate in major areas, and 50% or higher in certain segments where low. WSS and high LDL filtration rate existed. Conclusion. CFD results appeared to be related with in vivo development of coronary atherosclerosis. Simulated FFR and its threshold value 0.8 demonstrated the ischemic risk. Both WSS and LDL filtration rate could indicate areas of plaque growth.

Abstract:Background: Invasively measured fractional flow reserve (FFR) and index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) are gold standards for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and coronary microcirculatory dysfunction (CMD). However, the interaction between CAD and CMD has not been comprehensively investigated. We aim to non-invasively investigate hemodynamic effect of CMD in nonobstructive CAD cases using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Method: This study employed CFD simulations on six cases with nonobstructive CAD and CMD in left anterior descending artery (LAD) territories. Two microcirculatory situations were simulated: normal microcirculatory resistance (MR) situation; CMD situation where MR at the outlets of LAD branches were multiplied by the ratio of clinically measured IMR to the cutoff value. Blood flow, translesional pressure drop (Delta ptl), and simulated FFR (FFRCT) of LAD and non-culprit branches were compared between the two microcirculatory situations using Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The results are in accordance with existing studies and clinical measurements. Compared with normal MR, there were significant decreases in outlet flow velocity and increases in FFRCT (p < 0.01 for both in Wilcoxon signed rank tests) in LAD branches with CMD, with minor decreases (0.63-5.64 mmHg) in Delta ptl. There was no significant influence on outlet flow velocity (< 2%) and FFRCT (< 0.02) in non-culprit branches (p > 0.05 for both). Conclusion: IMR-based CFD simulation could estimate hemodynamic effects of CMD. CMD in a coronary artery branch can decrease its blood flow and Delta ptl, increase its FFR, with little effect on non-culprit branches.
Validation of Hemodynamic Stress Calculation in Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography Versus Intravascular Ultrasound

Abstract:Background:Development in computational fluid dynamics and 3D construction could facilitate the calculation of hemodynamic stresses in coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). However, the agreement between CCTA derived stresses and intravascular ultrasound/intravascular coronary angiography (IVUS/ICA)-derived stresses remains undetermined. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate if CCTA can serve as alternative to IVUS/ICA for hemodynamic evaluation.Methods:In this retrospective study, 13 patients (14 arteries) with unstable angina who underwent both CCTA and IVUS/ICA at an interval of less than 7 days were consecutively included at the Chinese PLA General Hospital within the year of 2021. Slice-level minimal lumen area (MLA), percent area stenosis, velocity, pressure, Reynolds number, wall shear stress (WSS) and axial plaque stress (APS) were determined by both modalities. The agreement between CCTA and IVUS/ICA was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Pearson's correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman analysis.Results:CCTA overestimated the degree of area stenosis (50.22%±16.15% vs. 36.41%±19.37%, P=0.004) with the MLA showing no significant difference (5.81±2.24 vs. 6.72±2.04 mm2, P=0.126). No statistical difference was observed in WSS (6.57±6.26 vs. 5.98±5.55 Pa, P=0.420) and APS (16.03±1,159.45 vs. -1.27±890.39 Pa, P=0.691) between CCTA and IVUS. Good correlation was found in velocity (ICC: 0.796, 95% CI: 0.752-0.833), Reynolds number (ICC: 0.810, 95% CI: 0.768-0.844) and WSS (ICC: 0.769, 95% CI: 0.718-0.810), while the ICC of APS was (ICC: 0.341, 95% CI: 0.197-0.458), indicating a relatively poor correlation.Conclusions:CCTA can serve as a satisfactory alternative to the reference standard, IVUS/ICA in morphology simulation and hemodynamic stress calculation, especially in the calculation of WSS.

Abstract:The dysfunction of coronary microcirculation is an important cause of coronary artery disease (CAD). The index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) is a quantitative evaluation of coronary microcirculatory function, which provides a significant reference for the prediction, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of CAD. IMR also plays a key role in investigating the interaction between epicardial and microcirculatory dysfunctions, and is closely associated with coronary hemodynamic parameters such as flow rate, distal coronary pressure, and aortic pressure, which have been widely applied in computational studies of CAD. However, there is currently a lack of consensus across studies on the normal and pathological ranges of IMR. The relationships between IMR and coronary hemodynamic parameters have not been accurately quantified, which limits the application of IMR in computational CAD studies. In this paper, we discuss the research gaps between IMR and its potential applications in the computational simulation of CAD. Computational simulation based on the combination of IMR and other hemodynamic parameters is a promising technology to improve the diagnosis and guide clinical trials of CAD.
A Novel Physics-Based Model for Fast Computation of Blood Flow in Coronary Arteries

Abstract:Blood flow and pressure calculated using the currently available methods have shown the potential to predict the progression of pathology, guide treatment strategies and help with postoperative recovery. However, the conspicuous disadvantage of these methods might be the time-consuming nature due to the simulation of virtual interventional treatment. The purpose of this study is to propose a fast novel physics-based model, called FAST, for the prediction of blood flow and pressure. More specifically, blood flow in a vessel is discretized into a number of micro-flow elements along the centerline of the artery, so that when using the equation of viscous fluid motion, the complex blood flow in the artery is simplified into a one-dimensional (1D) steady-state flow. We demonstrate that this method can compute the fractional flow reserve (FFR) derived from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). 345 patients with 402 lesions are used to evaluate the feasibility of the FAST simulation through a comparison with three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Invasive FFR is also introduced to validate the diagnostic performance of the FAST method as a reference standard. The performance of the FAST method is comparable with the 3D CFD method. Compared with invasive FFR, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of FAST is 88.6%, 83.2% and 91.3%, respectively. The AUC of FFR FAST is 0.906. This demonstrates that the FAST algorithm and 3D CFD method show high consistency in predicting steady-state blood flow and pressure. Meanwhile, the FAST method also shows the potential in detecting lesion-specific ischemia.

Abstract:The Human Genome Project not only provided the essential reference map for the human genome but also stimulated the development of technology and analytic tools to process massive quantities of genomic data. As a result of this project, new technologies for DNA sequencing have improved in efficiency and cost by more than a millionfold over the past decade, and these technologies can now be routinely applied at a cost of less than $5,000 per genome. Although the application of these technologies in cancer genomics research has continued to contribute to basic discoveries, opportunities for translating them for individual patients have also emerged. This is especially important in clinical cancer research, where genetic alterations in a patient's tumor may be matched to molecularly targeted therapies. In this review, we discuss the integration of cancer genomics and clinical oncology and the opportunity to deliver precision cancer medicine.

Abstract:Most acute coronary syndromes are due to a sudden luminal embolism caused by the rupturing or erosion of atherosclerotic plaques. Prevention and treatment of plaque development have become an effective strategy to reduce mortality and morbidity from coronary heart disease. It is now generally accepted that plaques with thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) are precursors to rupturing and that larger plaques and high-risk plaque features (including low-attenuation plaque, positive remodeling, napkin-ring sign, and spotty calcification) constitute unstable plaque morphologies. However, plaque vulnerability or rupturing is a complex evolutionary process caused by a combination of multiple factors. Using a combination of medicine, engineering mechanics, and computer software, researchers have turned their attention to computational fluid mechanics. The importance of fluid mechanics in pathological states for promoting plaque progression, inducing plaque tendency to vulnerability, or even rupture, as well as the high value of functional evaluation of myocardial ischemia has become a new area of research. This article reviews recent research advances in coronary plaque fluid mechanics, aiming to describe the concept, research implications, current status of clinical studies, and limitations of fluid mechanic’s characteristic parameters: wall shear stress (WSS), axial plaque shear (APS), and fractional flow reserve (FFR). Previously, most computational fluid dynamics were obtained using invasive methods, such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) or optical coherence tomography (OCT). In recent years, the image quality and spatial resolution of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) have greatly improved, making it possible to compute fluid dynamics by noninvasive methods. In the future, the combination of CCTA-based anatomical stenosis, plaque high-risk features, and fluid mechanics can further improve the prediction of plaque development, vulnerability, and risk of rupturing, as well as enabling noninvasive means to assess the degree of myocardial ischemia, thereby providing an important aid to guide clinical decision-making and optimize treatment.

Abstract:The emergence of new cardiac diagnostics and therapeutics of the heart has given rise to the challenging field of virtual design and testing of technologies in a patient-specific environment. Given the recent advances in medical imaging, computational power and mathematical algorithms, patient-specific cardiac models can be produced from cardiac images faster, and more efficiently than ever before. The emergence of patient-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has paved the way for the new field of computer-aided diagnostics. This article provides a review of CFD methods, challenges and opportunities in coronary and intra-cardiac flow simulations. It includes a review of market products and clinical trials. Key components of patient-specific CFD are covered briefly which include image segmentation, geometry reconstruction, mesh generation, fluid-structure interaction, and solver techniques.

Abstract:This Research Topic features recent advances in computational hemodynamic methods for diagnosis, prediction, and personalized treatment planning applicable to cardiovascular disease and cancer metastasis. The collection of articles describes novel tools, therapeutic and process improvement methods, and studies exploiting the capability of computational tools to provide quantitative information about hemodynamics and interactions with cells and tissues beyond conventional clinical possibilities.For example, Wang et al present exciting results showing patient specific steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations following virtual splenectomy that may predict the likelihood of thrombosis 1 . Preoperative imaging data were used for model creation from portal hypertensive patients who underwent splenectomy. Results show the area of low wall shear stress (WSS; defined as <20% of the patient-specific average) can predict post-splenectomy thrombosis with an area under the receiver operating curve of 0.75. Diameter of the splenic vein was correlated with WSS results, which was further validated in another small group of patients. Extension of this work may influence future postoperative management and prophylaxis protocols in this patient population.Assi et al conducted patient-specific CFD with ultimate application to the prediction of thrombosis using simulations with physiologic boundary conditions to characterize hemodynamics from iliac vein compression syndrome patients relative to controls 2 . Their results from this understudied population showed increased shear rate in the left versus right common iliac vein of patients (resulting in a higher ratio), and relative to controls. This work serves as an exciting foundation for shear rate and the shear rate ratio between contralateral iliac veins to serve as potential measures of thrombosis risk in iliac vein compression syndrome patients.Citing alterations in endothelial cell transport based on local WSS distributions, Rahmati and Maftoon used an idealized vessel with variable curvature to simulate the role of WSS from tortuosity on interactions between circulating tumor cells and the vessel wall 3 . Simulation methods included fluid-structure and receptorligand interactions for circulating tumor cell (i.e. deformable body) adhesion within a simulated plasma environment via an immersed boundary approach. Curvature, asymmetrical flow patterns and associated WSS alterations established local adhesion dynamics. Expansion of such methods may ultimately prove useful in assessing the likelihood of metastasis.Colombo et al describe a workflow using in vitro and in silico approaches to further study hemodynamics in the microvasculature and build from prior papers associating WSS alterations with coronary microvascular disease 4 . In short, the workflow created an idealized microvasculature representation based on Murray's law, which was then printed using 3D molds and ultimately seeded with human embryonic kidney cells to study their response to varying degrees of microvascular disease (i.e. impaired flow to several microvasculature model outlets).Lopez-Santana and colleagues employed CFD simulations with multiple inlets, Windkessel outlet boundary conditions, and geometry from a healthy patient to characterize aortic flow patterns resulting from different geometric parameters related to the anastomosis of a left ventricular assist device outflow graft 5 . Specifically the authors vary the angle of insertion, distance along the ascending aorta from the anatomic ventriculoarterial junction, and cardinal position around the aorta (coronal to sagittal) as parameters, and characterize results in terms of WSS, pressure, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy.Kim et al. quantified differences in left atrial morphology and associated readouts related to the potential for stroke (i.e. velocity and stasis) using models created from phase-contrast as compared to contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography 6 . Results were promising, suggesting their segmentation and registration workflow allows for the use of contrast enhanced imaging data for 4D flow analysis with minimal impact on the readouts assessed.

Abstract:Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) is a rare congenital heart condition with fixed and dynamic stenotic elements, potentially causing ischemia. Invasive coronary angiography under stress is the established method for assessing hemodynamics in AAOCA, yet it is costly, technically intricate, and uncomfortable. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations offer a noninvasive alternative for patient-specific hemodynamic analysis in AAOCA. This systematic review examines the role of CFD simulations in AAOCA, encompassing patient-specific modeling, noninvasive imaging-based boundary conditions, and flow characteristics. Screening articles using AAOCA and CFD-related terms prior to February 2023 yielded 19 publications, covering 370 patients. Over the past four years, 12 (63%) publications (259 patients) employed dedicated CFD models, whereas 7 (37%) publications (111 patients) used general-purpose CFD models. Dedicated CFD models were validated for fixed stenosis but lacked dynamic component representation. General-purpose CFD models exhibited variability and limitations, with fluid–solid interaction models showing promise. Interest in CFD modeling of AAOCA has surged recently, mainly utilizing dedicated models. However, these models inadequately replicate hemodynamics, necessitating novel CFD approaches to accurately simulate pathophysiological changes in AAOCA under stress conditions.

Abstract:The fact that coronary angiography has limitations in terms of precise estimation and progression of atherosclerosis has been partially overcome during the last years by the use of new techniques. Catheter-based invasive modalities are of a profound clinical importance in regard to accurate assessment of coronary anatomy and physiology and the choice of the appropriate treatment strategy for each patient. Also their potential in clinical investigation projects is of great interest. This current review summarizes the basic principles of these methodologies and evidently highlights not only their use in clinical practice but also their contribution in clinical outcomes.

Abstract:Vascular diseases, such as aneurysms and stenosis, significantly impact hemodynamic parameters and disrupt the structural integrity of the arterial layer. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations in realistic arteries with wall interactions can detect stenosis formation by identifying altered flows and variations in wall shear stresses. This review article aims to highlight the significance of CFD simulations in finding the evolution of arterial diseases based on CT (Computed tomography) scan images of actual patient data. Each article was evaluated based on various hemodynamic parameters, inflow pulsatile waveform nature, and blood rheological models, including Newtonian and Non-Newtonian. The review provides the outcomes of studies involving fluid and structure interactions. The challenges of CFD and Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) simulations are discussed using results derived from patient-specific CT scan data. Different anatomical vessels reconstructed using medical images, and various inflow and outflow boundary conditions being applied to simulate the flow in these models and wall interaction with the fluid domain have been reported to analyze the flow behavior and predict arterial wall diseases. The article will be helpful to researchers and surgeons in analyzing diseased patient and developing a non-invasive-based system. The study emphasizes the potential of CFD simulations for identifying vascular diseases and predicting their evolution based on CT scan images of actual patient data. Additionally, the article highlights the need for more research to address the challenges associated with CFD and FSI simulations.

Abstract:Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cardiovascular disease. Early diagnosis of CAD's physiological significance is of utmost importance for guiding individualized risk-tailored treatment strategies. In this paper, we first review the state-of-the-art clinical diagnostic indices to quantify the severity of CAD and the associated invasive and noninvasive imaging technologies in order to quantify the anatomical parameters of diameter stenosis, area stenosis, and hemodynamic indices of coronary flow reserve and fractional flow reserve. With the development of computational technologies and CFD methods, tremendous progress has been made in applying image-based CFD simulation techniques to elucidate the effects of hemodynamics in vascular pathophysiology toward the initialization and progression of CAD. So then, we review the advancements of CFD technologies in patient-specific modeling, involving the development of geometry reconstruction, boundary conditions, and fluid-structure interaction. Next, we review the applications of CFD to stenotic sites, in order to compute their hemodynamic parameters and study the relationship between the hemodynamic conditions and the clinical indices, to thereby assess the amount of viable myocardium and candidacy for percutaneous coronary intervention. Finally, we review the strengths and limitations of current researches of applying CFD to CAD studies.

Abstract:Numerical models that simulate the behaviors of the coronary arteries have been greatly improved by the addition of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) methods. Although computationally demanding, FSI models account for the movement of the arterial wall and more adequately describe the biomechanical conditions at and within the arterial wall. This offers greater physiological relevance over Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, which assume the walls do not move or deform. Numerical simulations of patient-specific cases have been greatly bolstered by the use of imaging modalities such as Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to reconstruct accurate 2D and 3D representations of artery geometries. The goal of this study was to conduct a comprehensive review on CFD and FSI models on coronary arteries, and evaluate their translational potential.

Systematic Review of the Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics for Adult Aortic Diseases

Abstract:Background: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a new medical method combining medicine and science. The aim of this study is to summarize and analyze the application of CFD in adult aortic diseases. Methods: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A search in the PubMed, Cochrane Library and Chinese databases identified 47 highly relevant articles. Studies were included if they assessed biomechanical markers and their potential association with progression or rupture of aortic aneurysms or dissections. Results: There are no randomized controlled trials to examine the direct relationship between all biomechanical parameters and aortic disease progression or rupture. Wall stress and peak wall rupture risk can predict the risk of aortic aneurysm rupture using biomechanics, which is more accurate than the prediction based on "diameter" alone. Areas with lower time averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS) and higher oscillatory shear index (OSI) are at risk for further aortic expansion or dissection. Higher relative residence time (RRT) area can predict platelet activation and thrombosis. In addition, pressure, flow field and other indicators can also roughly predict the risk of aortic disease progression. Conclusions: Contemporary evidence suggests that CFD can provide additional hemodynamic parameters, which have the potential to predict the progression of aortic lesions, the effect of surgical intervention, and prognosis.
An Overview of Computational Coronary Physiology Technologies Based on Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:This article reviews four new technologies for assessment of coronary hemodynamics based on medical imaging and artificial intelligence, including quantitative flow ratio (QFR), optical flow ratio (OFR), computational fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) and artificial intelligence (AI)-based instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR). These technologies use medical imaging such as coronary angiography, computed tomography angiography (CTA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT), to reconstruct three-dimensional vascular models through artificial intelligence algorithms, simulate and calculate hemodynamic parameters in the coronary arteries, and achieve non-invasive and rapid assessment of the functional significance of coronary stenosis. This article details the working principles, advantages such as non-invasiveness, efficiency, accuracy, limitations such as image dependency, and assumption restrictions, of each technology. It also compares and analyzes the image dependency, calculation accuracy, calculation speed, and operation simplicity, of the four technologies. The results show that these technologies are highly consistent with the traditional invasive wire method, and shows distinct advantages in terms of accuracy, reliability, convenience and cost-effectiveness, but there are also factors that affect accuracy. The results of this review demonstrates that AI-based iFR technology is currently one of the most promising technologies. The main challenges and directions for future development are also discussed. These technologies bring new ideas for the non-invasive assessment of coronary artery disease, and are expected to promote the technological progress in this field.

Abstract:Efficient and accurate computational model for blood flow dynamics (hemodynamics), is essential for determining optimal treatment strategy, diagnosis, and pathology identification of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The focus of the present review paper is to discuss on critical aspects of hemodynamics. Various numerical methods for computational hemodynamics are examined—addressing three key modeling choices. First, the relevance of non-Newtonian hemorheological models in varying vascular conditions is presented. Second, an assessment of single-phase versus multiphase modeling's validity, for different arterial geometries, is presented. Lastly, investigation on the impact of arterial wall elasticity on blood flow patterns is carried out and a discussion on the necessity of fluid–structure interaction (FSI) model is presented. By surveying diverse scenarios of blood flow modeling, presented in recent literature, it is observed that non-Newtonian behavior significantly impacts severely stenosed arteries or those with low diameters and Womersley numbers, while larger arteries exhibit characteristics similar to Newtonian fluids. Differences between single-phase and multiphase modeling vary with arterial configurations, showcasing notable particle migration effects in curved and branched arteries. Additionally, arterial wall elasticity's influence varies across scenarios—highlighting the importance of FSI, particularly in diseased states. The article identifies crucial areas for future research to enhance CFD-based hemodynamic modeling, emphasizing the integration of multiphase simulation with non-linear elastic arteries, considering surrounding tissue effects in FSI, innovating patient-specific CAD geometries, and developing faster computational techniques.

Abstract:The fractional flow reserve (FFR) is well recognized as a gold standard measure for the estimation of functional coronary stenosis. Technological progressions in image processing have empowered the reconstruction of three-dimensional models of the coronary arteries via both non-invasive and invasive imaging modalities. The application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to coronary 3D anatomical models allows the virtual evaluation of the hemodynamic significance of a coronary lesion with high diagnostic accuracy. Methods: Search of the bibliographic database for articles published from 2011 to 2023 using the following search terms: invasive FFR and non-invasive FFR. Pooled analysis of the sensitivity and specificity, with the corresponding confidence intervals from 32% to 94%. In addition, the summary processing times were determined. Results: In total, 24 studies published between 2011 and 2023 were included, with a total of 13,591 patients and 3345 vessels. The diagnostic accuracy of the invasive and non-invasive techniques at the per-patient level was 89% (95% CI, 85-92%) and 76% (95% CI, 61-80%), respectively, while on the per-vessel basis, it was 92% (95% CI, 82-88%) and 81% (95% CI, 75-87%), respectively. Conclusion: These opportunities providing hemodynamic information based on anatomy have given rise to a new era of functional angiography and coronary imaging. However, further validations are needed to overcome several scientific and computational challenges before these methods are applied in everyday clinical practice.
A Multi-physics Model of Flow from Coronary Angiography: Insights into Microvascular Function

Abstract:Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Coronary Microvascular Disease (CMD) can lead to insufficient blood flow to the myocardium, affecting millions of people globally. Coronary angiography, one of the most commonly used imaging modalities, offers valuable information that assists in diagnosing these diseases. However, these benefits are not fully understood or utilized in current clinical practice. In this study, a 3D-0D coupled multi-physics computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed and calibrated to simulate and better understand the process of contrast injection and washout during clinical angiography. A contrast intensity profile (CIP) was introduced to capture the dynamics of coronary angiography data. Additionally, a sensitivity study was conducted to assess the influence of various coronary artery model parameters on CIP. The results demonstrate that the calibrated 3D-0D coupled multi-physics models are physiologically meaningful and produce accurate hemodynamic results. The sensitivity study further reveals that resistance has a greater impact on CIP than capacitance, with higher resistance amplifying this effect.

Abstract:An activation-specific cDNA library was made from phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-activated haematopoietic cells of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using the technique of suppression subtractive hybridization. Several immune system genes were identified, including an interleukin (IL)1 receptor related protein and two invariant chain-like proteins. Many clones showed no similarity by BLAST search, but had AU-rich elements. These fragments were labelled and used for hybridization with a PHA-activated head kidney cDNA library. Several immune system genes were isolated by this technique, including a tumour necrosis factor (TNF) decoy receptor and a novel chemokine, designated trout chemokine 2. The TNF receptor is 285 amino acids in length and is 32-36% identical to a brook trout and human homologue. The CC chemokine is 44% identical at the amino acid level to a carp CC chemokine and approximately 20% identical to several mammalian CC chemokines. However, it has a 91 amino acid stalk-like structure at its COOH end, which is similar to the glycosylated stalk of fractalkine, a mammalian CX(3)C chemokine. In summary, AU-rich fragments obtained from an activation-specific library proved useful as hybridization probes for isolating trout immune system genes.
