Abstract:This study adopts a mixed-method approach to analyze the characteristics of the linguistic landscape in Barkhor Street, the attitudes of tourists, shop owners, and residents towards it, and the strengths and weaknesses of linguistic landscape design there. Findings showed that: 1) In terms of the presentation of linguistic landscape, the combination of 'Tibetan + Chinese' appears most frequently, with Tibetan being a priority code present in them. Moreover, different types of shops employ different marking methods for shop signs. 2) Overall, the audience expressed satisfaction with the linguistic landscape, with a preference for using the 'Tibetan + Chinese + Pinyin' combination. Most respondents suggested using Tibetan as a priority code and graphemic marking as a marking method. 3) The linguistic landscape design has the advantages of preserving and promoting Tibetan culture and boosting economic development. However, it also has the disadvantage of weak information function and a monolithic presentation of the linguistic landscape due to related language policies. 4) Furthermore, the study found that economic factors significantly influence the choice of language combinations and marking methods in the linguistic landscape. Language policies are a double-edged sword, and language, economy, and culture form an interconnected cycle.

Abstract:Linguistic landscape (LL) can serve as both top-down and bottom-up approaches to understanding language planning policy in various dimensions. It can reflect the language identities, motives and contestations perceived by stakeholders of different decision-making levels. Prior studies adopted the bottom-up approach to investigate the language practice and ideologies reflected by the design and linguistic features observed in the linguistic landscapes in ethnically and linguistically diverse areas, like Medan in Russia, and Seoul in Korea. As Hong Kong is also a trilingual city with an inclusive combination of nationalities, this paper is intended to take it as a case study to explore the de facto language ideologies reflected by LL at the micro-level. We would look into the catering industry from a holistic perspective by reviewing the food menus of 66 restaurants located in diversified districts and serving different types of cuisines. This bottom-up LL research reveals that business owners and the public shares the language ideologies of perceiving English as prestigious language, multilingualism and traditional Chinese as standard character.
Enacting Chinese-ness on Arab Land: A Case Study of the Linguistic Landscape of an (Emerging) Chinatown in Multilingual and Multicultural Dubai

Abstract:An urban space's linguistic landscape represents a multimodal and multilingual discourse, indexing the historical, socio-political, cultural, and ethnolinguistic aspects of the locale. Contributing to sociolinguistic research in our global cities, this study zooms in on an unexpected Chinese ethnic enclave, or Chinatown, in Dubai, a superdiverse urban space and multilingual contact zone in post-colonial UAE. Drawing on a corpus of authentic LL data taken from Dubai's emerging 'Chinatown', the study shows that a multilingual triad involving Arabic, English and Chinese is a pervasive sight in this area, deviating from the taken-for-granted and 'choreographed' bilingual LL in Dubai overall featuring Arabic and English. Notably, Chinese, as an index of ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identity and marker of boundary, is the most prominent and informative, whereas Dubai's official language Arabic often appears in small font size and is rendered inconspicuous. This gives rise to a scenario I call 'small-print multilingualism' – a conscious attempt for small-business owners to include Arabic reluctantly only to get the 'job' done and conform to relevant rules and regulations. Theoretically, this article argues for the relevance of Bakhtin's concepts of centripetal and centrifugal forces in helping shed light on the dynamic and negotiated relationship between official top-down regulations and bottom-up linguistic practices on the ground in ethnic enclaves. Abstract:This article focuses on the linguistic landscape of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, investigates factors contributing to this distinctive landscape, and examines its role in maintaining two ethnic languages, Mongolian and Korean. 1046 language signs in three major cities were analysed and 28 interviews were conducted to evaluate interviewee attitudes towards the linguistic landscape. The results indicate that the Inner Mongolian linguistic landscape is one of abundant linguistic diversity, with the majority of signs (61.9%) displaying more than one language; that this landscape is influenced by factors such as language planning, language preferences, economic development needs, and tourist demands; and that Mongolian and Korean have high levels of visibility on both official and private signs. Mongolian and Korean interviewees expressed delight in seeing their ethnic languages displayed and believed that public displays of local languages could help maintain ethnic languages by providing a physical and visual representation of linguistic presence and ethnic identity.

Abstract:This paper presents research on the dynamic relationship between linguistic landscape and place-making. Through the lens of tourism, it scrutinises the language on public transport signs, billboards, street names, shop names and commercial posters, as well as public signs of government agencies, on Wailingding Island off China's southern coast. Its purpose is to explore the question of to what extent and with what characteristics place meaning 'translates' into the linguistic landscape. A predominantly qualitative approach is employed. The research finds that the text content of the linguistic landscape is fundamental to making a meaningful place. Its cultural connotation is related to the social environment, manifesting deeper the meaning of a place beyond the displayed content. Nonetheless, the symbolical meaning of the linguistic landscape is fluid, with the subjective consciousness of the creative subject and the cognition, perception and understanding of the linguistic landscape by different agents of interest.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to call for more attention to the non-verbal resources of linguistic landscape research and also provide a certain reference for implement of various countries in the other scenic area of the world. The data collection technique is the comprehensive photographing of signs in various shops, hotels, restaurants at the streets of survey areas. The equipment used is a digital camera. The sampling technique is carried out by random sampling. In order to get the diversity, a wide range of signs is selected. Through analyze, the non-verbal resources of the linguistic landscape of Dali ancient city tourist attraction is that official signs appropriately use the non-text marks to better promote local culture. The use of colors highlights text messages and makes people visually comfortable, in line with Chinese aesthetic habits. Most of the signs have radically abandoned traditional shapes and used non-traditional shapes that are more distinctive and can convey cultural information, which are worthy of promotion. Since the combined sign is formulated in accordance with the official sign standard, the shape and color are more in line with the official standard. The non-text marks on the signs are customized privately, which is more diverse than the unified official watch signs. The non-verbal resources of private signs pay more attention to the transmission of information, and more use of phone numbers combined with brand logos makes the linguistic landscape an advertising effect and maximizes the mass communication of private brands. In addition, in order to comply with the official requirements, the color and shape of the signage do not differ much from store to store. It is worth mentioning that the official signage has a more long-term development perspective, by using the QR code which is very popular nowadays, but the scope of the implement is limited.

Abstract:Given the current situation that the research on the linguistic landscape in the tourism field is relatively insufficient, we try to carry out an investigation on the construction of linguistic landscape in the Fulai Mountain tourist area of Shandong Province, China, from the perspective of the tourism language landscape in domestic tourist areas. This study found that the language signs in the tourist area are mainly monolingual, supplemented by bilingual and trilingual signs. There are three languages in the Fulai Mountain tourist area: Chinese, English and Korean, among which Chinese is the preferred code, while English and Korean are marginalized in the linguistic landscape. The administrative department of the Fulai Mountain tourist area plays a decisive role in the construction of the linguistic landscape. We also find some problems with the linguistic landscape in the Fulai Mountain tourist area, such as insufficient construction of a diversified linguistic landscape, non-standard translation of language, and lack of design ideas and regional characteristics of the language signs. In the future, tourist area management departments should attach importance to the value of linguistic landscape construction, fully consider tourists' multi-language needs, improve linguistic landscape design, and regularly carry out linguistic landscape surveys.

Abstract:This paper examines the impact of the local tea industry on the language ecology of the geographically remote Blang community in China. The paper takes an ecology perspective in language planning where all languages in the locality are given equal attention. These languages in the context of this paper include Blang, Putonghua, and English as the leading global lingua franca of international trade. The study used a qualitative approach and reports findings from semi-structured interviews collected in Yunnan Province. The discursive approach allows for the analysis of participants' attitudes and ideologies vis-à-vis the changing economic and linguistic ecology. The findings demonstrate that the local tea industry has increased the economic value of Putonghua and further marginalised Blang. Putonghua and English were ideated as capital in the domestic and global markets, while Blang was perceived as having no economic value. These findings point towards a weakening vitality of Blang and reflect the uneven power relations favouring Putonghua and English. While economic entrepreneurship was paired with linguistic entrepreneurship, this agentive behaviour was mainly directed towards learning the dominant languages by the Blang people, and it was related to the extent to which individuals themselves engaged with the tea business.

Abstract:Language choices in the economic field of late capitalist societies are shaped by a combination of local, national, and global forces as well as historical, political, and economic factors. This study conducts an analysis of language choices in the linguistic landscape of Macao’s heritage tourism (i.e. signposts of tourist attractions) and gaming tourism (i.e. casino promotional brochures). The findings show similarities and differences in the two sectors in terms of language choices and some tensions emerging behind such language choices in constructing Macao with different voices. Unlike previous studies which find the commodification of one national or ethnic language for profit, the case of Macao illustrates the commodification of multilingualism for profit. Despite the similarities and differences, language choices in both signposts and brochures feature reductive translingualism under the neoliberal ideology which values the instrumental function of language for profit-making purposes.

Abstract:Ongoing debates in the field of sociolinguistics are centred around the implications of the commodification of the languages and cultures of ethnic minorities. Previous research has adopted synchronic approaches to describing how ideologies of tourist consumption shape language choices in the linguistic landscape. However, such snapshot analyses have proved to be inadequate in revealing changes in the linguistic landscape over time, especially the nuanced perceptions of minority communities who are subjects to ethnic tourism. This paper examines the use of Dongba script in the linguistic landscape of the Naxi minority in Lijiang under the conditions of commodification in tourism. A diachronic comparison of photographic data collected in 2016 and 2021 revealed the increasing visibility and prominence of Dongba script on public signs; interviews with ordinary inhabitants, tourism industry practitioners and Dongba priests within the Naxi community further demonstrated the evolving attitudes towards linguistic commodification, from hesitation and objection to integration and creative accommodation. The study provides new insights into how a diachronic perspective can help reveal the dynamic between packaging languages as commodities and retaining signs of identity, religion and culture.

Indexical order and language ideology in the linguistic landscape of tourism in Hong Kong: Chungking Mansions and its surroundings

Abstract:This study undertakes an investigation into the linguistic landscape of tourism in the tourist areas of Chungking Mansions and its surrounding environs in Hong Kong and intends to reveal similarities and differences in the linguistic signs in the two areas by employing a statistical analysis of a comprehensive database of public signs. The results show that official signs in the two areas prioritize the use of Chinese and English, and Chinese has a marginally higher representation in the surrounding areas. In contrast, private signs in Chungking Mansions exhibit a distinctive linguistic diversity, with over 20 languages represented, and English occupying dominant position, followed by Arabic, Hindi, and other languages. In the surrounding areas, private signs are displayed in eight languages, with Chinese being the predominant code, followed by English, Japanese, Korean, and other languages. It is found that the linguistic landscape of tourism in Hong Kong is diversified, contextualized by historical, political, cultural, and economic factors, and characterized by indexical ordering and ideological implications, and English plays a crucial role in distinguishing Hong Kong from other Chinese cities. In addition, the study offers insights into the complexity and importance of linguistic diversity in the context of tourism and urban development.

Abstract:Linguistic landscape has become an emerging research topic in sociolinguistics due to the development of urban linguistic landscape. Based on the development of linguistic landscape in TaiKoo Hui, its diverse characteristics are analyzed, and the language signs, usage, and codes are summarized. It is found that there is poor transmission effect of multilingual landscape information and improper use of linguistic landscape in TaiKoo Hui. This paper concludes that the linguistic landscape of Taikoo Hui can be optimized from two aspects to enhance its attractiveness and competitiveness, including improving the informational function of foreign language signs and regulating the use of linguistic landscape.

Abstract:The place and placeness are believed to be a crucial perspective for comprehending the transformative dynamics of tourist destinations in the context of globalization and the rapid development of the tourism industry. As the material carrier of language, linguistic landscape is an intermediary for people to endow emotions and personalities into the place, becoming an effective path for exploring the place-making in a certain area. Mogan Mountain is a famous national tourist resort, which is located in Mogan Mountain Town, Deqing County, Huzhou City, China. This is a good case area for studying the relationship between linguistic landscape and place-making in tourist destinations. There are two theories that form the theoretical foundation of the study, namely the place and the geosemiotics. Firstly, the results showed the overall style of the linguistic landscape. Multilingual labelling (52.7%), official signs (55.3%), and standardized Chinese characters predominantly shaped the linguistic landscape, with English and other languages being complementary. Secondly, from the perspective of three dimensions of the geosemiotics framework, such as inscription, language preference, and placement position, we conduct a comprehensive semiotic analysis of the linguistic landscape, which encompasses diverse facets such as fonts, materials, shifts in state, text vectors, and symmetrical arrangements. Finally, we explore the influence of linguistic landscapes on the place-making of Mogan Mountain through the dimensions of location, locale, and sense of place. The information on linguistic landscapes indicates the geographical location. These linguistic landscapes play an important role in constructing the language order, nostalgic atmosphere, exotic atmosphere, and elegant and tasteful lifestyle of the public space in Mogan Mountain. Readers of linguistic landscapes, including tourists and residents, generate and identify with the unique sense of place in Mogan Mountain. These linguistic landscapes construct the destination placeness of Mogan Mountain that combines both foreign and nostalgic styles, and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures. It will help promote the image positioning of tourism destinations and have practical guiding significance for the tourism planning, landscape-making, language management, and other aspects of tourism destinations.

Translingual Strategies As Consumer Design: A Case Study of Multilingual Linguistic Landscapes of Urban China

Abstract:Taking a photo-studio brand named Naive Blue as a case study, this article seeks to contribute to the understanding of translingual practices as stylistic strategies for commercial purposes in the era of globalization. Sociolinguistic analysis of the brand logo, shop signs and social media promotional practices shows that translingual practices have been mobilized as generative and interactive strategies of consumer design. First, translingual strategies help construct a discursive world not available in monolingual uses of either English or Chinese and position the brand's target consumers as self-assertive, individualistic, and sharing a taste of distinction. Second, translingual strategies are embodied and metalinguistically conscious practices (expected to be) shared by both the brand's social-media content manager and his interactants and followers in general. The findings also suggest that translingual practices are part of an emergent register indexing an emergent social class that is tentatively labeled 'young urban elites' in contemporary China.
Negotiating meaning and identity through translation in the linguistic landscape in Shantou: Addressing Post-Multilingualism challenges in a postcolonial Chinese city

Abstract:As a former treaty port and a current Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in China, Shantou occupies unique position in China's interaction with colonialism and globalisation. Through an analysis of English translations in the linguistic landscape (LL) in Shantou, it was found that international, local and regional factors work together to shape the city's LL. Shantou's resistance to the hegemony of English is encoded in the creative strategies that are adopted in translation, which include transliteration punning, cultural manipulation and hybrid translation. Drawing on the model of English as a lingua franca (ELF), this paper analyses how these strategies reflect the creative, flexible potential of English. These creative strategies can be interpreted as an expression of foreignisation, through which the sign writer consciously deviates from established norms in English to preserve local cultural traits and articulate local identity. Since LL reflects how meaning is negotiated in authentic social settings, incorporating LL projects in the classroom allows language learners and translator trainees to assume an active role in meaning negotiation in their sociolinguistic context. Ultimately, LL projects can empower students to exercise agency in articulating their own culture and constructing their social identity.

Between Authenticity and Commodification: Valorization of Ethnic Bai Language and Culture in China

Abstract:In an era of globalization, language and culture are discursively constructed as technical skills in exchange for marketable values. This is particularly true with ethnic minority languages and cultures which are gaining increasing importance and emerging as commodities for promoting tourism and the local economy. Adopting the concepts of “cultural capital” (Bourdieu, 1986) and “commodification of language and authenticity” (Heller, 2003, 2010), this study examines how ethnic Bai-related language and cultural practices are capitalized as a commodity to enhance the local economy and empower Bai people’s identification with their heritage maintenance. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and online observations via WeChat and TikTok. Findings demonstrate that the convertibility of Bai language and cultural capital into economic capital is largely mediated by the promotion of heritage tourism, marketing strategies, and the use of social media. Despite the increasing status of Bai language and culture, this study also demonstrates the tensions between authentication and commodification of Bai heritage language and cultural practices. The study argues that in the socio-economic process of discursive shift, Bai language and culture as “semiotic resources” (Kress, 2010) are not merely seen as symbols of ethnic identity but also regarded as marketable products to cater to market demand. The study can shed light on the empowerment of ethnic minority languages and their heritage maintenance in modern China.

Abstract:The sociolinguistics of mobility is one of Jan Blommaert's significant theoretical legacies vis-à-vis language interactions in the age of globalization. This paper investigates the mobilization of English as a semiotic resource in the public space of Chinese cities to reveal how the process of linguistic landscaping rescales English in China's layered language regime. In the three investigated cities in eastern China, the English language has been conceptualized as a symbol of internationalization, and the affective potentials of English signs turn the cities into spaces of friendliness. I argue that the visual bilingualism for internationalization purposes is loaded with state ideologies, and English semiotization in the urban space demonstrates the state's keenness for international recognition and integration into the global world. Inherent in this linguistic landscaping process are Englishization as internationalization ideology, standard language ideology, and linguistic purism ideology. While the translocal status of English in the world language system serves to upscale the cities to a higher scale level, the valorization of English in the official domain also reinforces the hegemonic power of English in the indexicality order, marginalizing social groups with limited English literacy. Thus, a critical, dialectical lens is needed to analyze the role of English in top-down linguistic landscaping.

Abstract:in English There is now increased awareness of the need to challenge 'common sense' ideologies of language in education, turning language classrooms into spaces of analysis and liberation. Key to achieving this goal is equipping students with the skills needed to navigate diverse, complex discourses about language (critical thinking), as well as fostering an agentive disposition among them (critical language awareness). This article reports on research which examined how these qualities can be developed by involving language learners in analysis of public signs (linguistic landscape). 33 undergraduate students at a public university in Bhutan were recruited to participate in an extra-curricular activity in which they were asked to independently collect examples of public signs from the capital Thimphu and engage in guided analysis and discussion of the linguistic and visual features of the signs. Analysis of video recordings of learner interaction as well as of the textual data produced during and after the activity indicated that critical thinking processes were activated with relative regularity. In this way, it is hoped, students will not only learn how to use a language but become more aware of its connection to power, more able to analyse language independently, and generally more adept at thinking critically. In this study, we examined how these types of abilities can be developed by getting students to analyse the way language is used on signs in public spaces (linguistic landscape). Our participants were 33 undergraduate students from Bhutan, a society with many languages, a complex history and highly distinct identity. Our findings indicate that on many occasions as they worked together to analyse the use of language on signs in public spaces, the students exhibited processes of critical thinking and also became much more aware of the relationship between power and the different languages around them.

Abstract:This article seeks to fill a research gap in current scholarship by exploring the role of typography in place-making practices in transitional China. Based on fieldwork conducted in an aspiring new town in an underdeveloped city, I observe that a diversity of typographies from both the tradition of calligraphic writing and novel digital design are applied in making the new town. Drawing on the emergent field of typographic landscape and notions of indexicality and enregisterment in sociolinguistics, I investigate the potential historical, social, cultural and political meanings of various typographies of emplaced signage across the town. Through a culturally sensitive analysis of signage found in historical parks, government-authored promotion boards and commercial streets, I further demonstrate how patterned and value-laden typographic choices are made across the three domains and shed light on the ideologies which shape these choices in situated place-making practices. Lastly, it will be argued that the new town can be read as a heterotopia comprised of different spaces that are incompatible due to their differing world views and place-making positions. The implications of this constructed heterotopia for its relocated residents framed by wider themes of socialist civil education, market-driven economy and tourism development will also be briefly discussed.
