Abstract:Cracked tooth syndrome is a commonly encountered disease in dentistry, which is often accompanied by dramatic painful responses from occlusion and temperature stimulation. Current clinical diagnostic trials include traditional methods (such as occlusion test, probing, cold stimulation, etc.) and X-rays based medical imaging (periapical radiography (PR), cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), etc.). However, these methods are strongly dependent on the experience of the clinicians, and some inconspicuous cracks are also extremely easy to be overlooked by visual observation, which will definitely affect the subsequent treatments. Inspired by the achievements of applying deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in crack detection in engineering, this article proposes an image-based crack detection method using a deep CNN classifier in combination with a sliding window algorithm. A CNN model is designed by modifying the size of the input layer and adding a fully connected layer with 2 units based on the ResNet50, and then, the proposed CNN is trained and validated with a self-prepared cracked tooth dataset including 20,000 images. By comparing validation accuracy under seven different learning rates, 10-5 is chosen as the best learning rate for the following testing process. The trained CNN is tested on 100 images with 1920 × 1080-pixel resolutions, which achieves an average accuracy of 90.39%. The results show that the proposed method can effectively detect cracks in images under various conditions (stained, overexplosion, images affected by other diseases). The proposed method in this article provides doctors with a more intelligent diagnostic solution, and it is not only suitable for optical photographs but also for automated diagnosis of other medical imaging images.
A Three-Step Computer Vision-Based Framework for Concrete Crack Detection and Dimensions Identification

Abstract:Crack detection is significant to building repair and maintenance; however, conventional inspection is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process for field engineers. This paper proposes a three-step computer vision-based framework to quickly recognize concrete cracks and automatically identify their length, maximum width, and area in damage images. In step one, a region-based convolutional neural network (YOLOv8) is applied to train the crack localizing model. In step two, Gaussian filtering, Canny, and FindContours are integrated to extract the reference contour (a pre-designed seal) to obtain the conversion scale between pixels and millimeter-wise sizes. In step three, the recognized crack bounding box is cropped, and the ApproxPolyDP function and Hough transform are performed to quantify crack dimensions based on the conversion ratio. The developed framework was validated on a dataset of 4630 crack images, and the model training took 150 epochs. Results show that the average crack detection accuracy reaches 95.7%, and the precision of quantified dimensions is over 90%, while the error increases as the crack size grows smaller (increasing to 8% when the crack width is within 1 mm). The proposed method can help engineers to efficiently achieve crack information at building inspection sites, while the reference frame must be pre-marked near the crack, which may limit the scope of application scenarios. In addition, the robustness and accuracy of the developed image processing techniques-based crack quantification algorithm need to be further improved to meet the requirements in real cases when the crack is located within a complex background.
The measurement of radiation dose profiles for electron-beam computed tomography using film dosimetry.

Abstract:The unique geometry of electron-beam CT (EBCT) scanners produces radiation dose profiles with widths which can be considerably different from the corresponding nominal scan width. Additionally, EBCT scanners produce both complex (multiple-slice) and narrow (3 mm) radiation profiles. This work describes the measurement of the axial dose distribution from EBCT within a scattering phantom using film dosimetry methods, which offer increased convenience and spatial resolution compared to thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) techniques. Therapy localization film was cut into 8 x 220 mm strips and placed within specially constructed light-tight holders for placement within the cavities of a CT Dose Index (CTDI) phantom. The film was calibrated using a conventional overhead x-ray tube with spectral characteristics matched to the EBCT scanner (130 kVp, 10 mm A1 HVL). The films were digitized at five samples per mm and calibrated dose profiles plotted as a function of z-axis position. Errors due to angle-of-incidence and beam hardening were estimated to be less than 5% and 10%, respectively. The integral exposure under film dose profiles agreed with ion-chamber measurements to within 15%. Exposures measured along the radiation profile differed from TLD measurements by an average of 5%. The film technique provided acceptable accuracy and convenience in comparison to conventional TLD methods, and allowed high spatial-resolution measurement of EBCT radiation dose profiles.
Cracklab: A high-precision and efficient concrete crack segmentation and quantification network

Abstract:A deep learning model named Cracklab for pixel level segmentation and measurement of concrete cracks is proposed. Cracklab excels at handling cracks at image edges and enhances scale adaptability, and it reduces physical occupation and increases efficiency by pruning. A crack database containing 685 images collected from complex scenes is established, with resolution ranging from 1024 to 2048 pixels. During training, focal loss is used to improve the recognition effect of complex background images. The results show that our method is more effective and accurate in detecting and quantifying cracks. Cracklab performed better in inference and comparative experiments, with mIoU at least 0.114 ahead and detection speeds 3.9 times faster compared to works that did not include pruning and scale adaptation. The proposed improved medial axis transform method has an error of 2.09 pixels at the maximum crack width, which is 19.6% lower than another work using distance transform method.

Abstract:Concrete surface crack detection is a critical research area for ensuring the safety of infrastructure, such as bridges, tunnels and nuclear power plants, and facilitating timely structural damage repair. Addressing issues in existing methods, such as high cost, lengthy processing times, low efficiency, poor effectiveness and difficulty in application on mobile terminals, this paper proposes an improved lightweight concrete surface crack detection algorithm, YOLOv8-Crack Detection (YOLOv8-CD), based on an improved YOLOv8. The algorithm integrates the strengths of visual attention networks (VANs) and Large Convolutional Attention (LCA) modules, introducing a Large Separable Kernel Attention (LSKA) module for extracting concrete surface crack and local feature information, adapted for features such as fracture susceptibility, large spans and slender shapes, thereby effectively emphasizing crack shapes. The Ghost module in the YOLOv8 backbone efficiently extracts essential information from original features at a minimal cost, enhancing feature extraction capability. Moreover, replacing the original convolution structure with GSConv in the neck network and employing the VoV-GSCSP module adapted for the YOLOv8 framework reduces floating-point operations during feature channel fusion, thereby lowering computational complexity whilst maintaining model accuracy. Experimental results on the RDD2022 and Wall Crack datasets demonstrate the improved algorithm increases in mAP50 by 15.2% and 12.3%, respectively, and in mAP50-95 by 22.7% and 17.2%, respectively, whilst achieving a reduced model computational load of only 7.9 × 109, a decrease of 3.6%. The algorithm achieves a detection speed of 88 FPS, enabling real-time and accurate detection of concrete surface crack targets. Comparison with other mainstream object detection algorithms validates the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The automatic detection and identification of tunnel cracks is very important for safe driving and tunnel maintenance. In order to accelerate the application of automated detection and reduce the deployment cost of target detection algorithm on edge devices, this paper adopts non-destructive testing and proposes a lightweight Mini-YOLOv5s algorithm for small target crack detection in tunnels, which mainly includes DP-C3 module, GDConv module, ECA-C3 module, CARAFE lightweight upsampling operator and loss function IGIoU. Among them, the DP-C3 module uses PConv to reduce the computational complexity of the model, and uses dilated convolution to enrich the receptive field to improve the information loss. The GDConv module improves the feature extraction capability of deep information. The feature fusion of small crack target information is realised by using ECA-C3 module and CARAFE lightweight up-sampling operator. A new loss function IGIoU is used to pay more attention to the contact degree of the boundary frame, so as to minimise the loss and improve the detection accuracy. Experiments show that the detection accuracy of Mini-YOLOv5s on self-made tunnel crack dataset reaches 95%, which compensates for the information loss, while the number of model parameters and GFLOPs are reduced by 35.4% and 30.4% respectively.

Abstract:In recent years, the industry and research communities have focused on developing autonomous crack inspection approaches, which mainly include image acquisition and crack detection. In these approaches, mobile devices such as cameras, drones or smartphones are utilized as sensing platforms to acquire structural images, and the deep learning (DL)-based methods are being developed as important crack detection approaches. However, the process of image acquisition and collection is timeconsuming, which delays the inspection. Also, the present mobile devices such as smartphones can be not only a sensing platform but also a computing platform that can be embedded with deep neural networks (DNNs) to conduct on-site crack detection. Due to the limited computing resources of mobile devices, the size of the DNNs should be reduced to improve the computational efficiency. In this study, an architecture called pruned crack recognition network (PCR-Net) was developed for the detection of structural cracks. A dataset containing 11000 images was established based on the raw images from bridge inspections. A pruning method was introduced to reduce the size of the base architecture for the optimization of the model size. Comparative studies were conducted with image processing techniques (IPTs) and other DNNs for the evaluation of the performance of the proposed PCR-Net. Furthermore, a modularly designed framework that integrated the PCR-Net was developed to realize a DL-based crack detection application for smartphones. Finally, on-site crack detection experiments were carried out to validate the performance of the developed system of smartphone-based detection of structural cracks.
A lightweight ground crack rapid detection method based on semantic enhancement

Abstract:To address the issue of detecting complex-shaped cracks that rely on manual, which may result in high costs and low efficiency, this paper proposed a lightweight ground crack rapid detection method based on semantic enhancement. Firstly, the introduction of the Context Guided Block module enhanced the YOLOv8 backbone network, improving its feature extraction capability. Next, the incorporation of GSConv and VoV-GSCSP was introduced to construct a lightweight yet efficient neck network, facilitating the effective fusion of information from multiple feature maps. Finally, the detection head achieved more precise target localization by optimizing the probability around the labels. The proposed method was validated through experiments on the public dataset RDD-2022. The experimental results demonstrate that our method effectively detects cracks. Compared to YOLOv8, the model parameters have been reduced by 73.5 %, while accuracy, F1 score, and FPS have improved by 6.6 %, 4.3 %, and 116, respectively. Therefore, our proposed method is more lightweight and holds significant application value.

Abstract:Cracking is one of the typical damages in concrete structures, and it is crucial to detect and quantify cracks in a timely and efficient manner. However, current research primarily focuses on either single-task recognition or dual-task recognition based on multi-step sequential approaches. Less attention has been devoted to the multi-task integration of cracks. To address the challenges of inefficient and multi-step detection in traditional concrete crack detection methods, a novel deep learning-based model, called YOLOv5-IDS, is proposed based on You Only Look Once network v5 (version 6.2) with the combination of bilateral segmentation network while introducing a dilated convolution, pyramid pooling module, and attention refinement module. Moreover, crack parameter measurement algorithms based on the micro-element method are proposed to improve accuracy and efficiency. The method proposed in this study can not only detect and segment cracks with high accuracy and efficiency, but also quickly measure crack parameters, thus developing a complete method for the process from real-time crack detection and segmentation to crack parameter measurement. The experimental results for the YOLOv5-IDS model reveal the following performance metrics. For crack detection, the mean average precision with an intersection of union threshold of 0.5 ( [email protected] ) is 84.33%, and the frames per second (FPS) is 159 f/s . For crack segmentation, the mean intersection over union (mIoU) is 94.78%, and the FPS is 8 f/s , respectively. Compared to existing methods, the proposed approach exhibits improvements in both accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, the calculation of crack parameters proves to be both precise and rapid.

Abstract:<p>Vision-based crack detection is of crucial importance in various industries, and it is very challenging due to weak signals in noisy backgrounds. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid approach for crack detection in raw images, which combines deep learning models and Bayesian probabilistic analysis for robust crack detection. First, we re-train a state-of-the-art object detector (<em>e.g.</em> a Faster R-CNN) to detect crack patches of suitable SNR (signal-noise-ratio). We design a semi-automatic method to generate ground truths of crack patches along crack lines for training. To further improve the accuracy of crack detections over the whole image, we propose a Bayesian integration algorithm to suppress false detections. Specifically, we use a deep CNN to recognize the orientation of the crack segment in each detected patch. Then, a Bayesian probability is computed on the accumulated evidence from detected adjacent patches within a neighborhood based on spatial proximity, orientation consistency and alignment consistency. The patch which lacks local supports is suppressed as false detection. An algorithm to learn the parameters of Bayesian integration is also derived. Extensive experiments and evaluations are performed on a new comprehensive dataset of crack images. The results show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art baseline approach on deep CNN classifier. Ablation experiments are also conducted to show the effectiveness of proposed techniques.</p>

Abstract:Deep learning algorithms have been employed for real-time concrete crack detection. However, many algorithms are not specifically tailored for this purpose. Moreover, their lightweight iterations are generally optimized at the macro-model level, leaving room for further lightweight enhancements at the block level. Therefore, this study developed an enhanced YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once Network v3) model, named YOLO-Crack. The structural optimization of the model takes into consideration the shapes of concrete cracks in the dataset. Meanwhile, two multiple branch-shaped blocks based on dilated convolutions, convolutions and pooling operations were proposed. The two blocks, incorporating depthwise separable convolutions and attention mechanisms, were used to rebuild the model at the block level. These enhancements significantly reduce the size and improve the detection performance of YOLO-Crack. Furthermore, YOLO-Crack was softwareized for real-time detection of concrete cracks. The software was designed to support parallel computing, allowing for real-time detection of concrete cracks even on laptops with limited computing power. It was utilized to detect cracks on concrete roads at a university in Nanjing, China, enabling real-time detection at a frame rate of 30 frames per second with satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract:The issue of missing teeth caused by dental microcracks has become a central topic in dental clinical medicine. Near-infrared technology combined with advanced image segmentation algorithms has become one of the leading technical routes for dental clinical medicine diagnosis. In this study, the NIR image segmentation method of dental microcracks was studied in depth to further utilize the advantages of near-infrared imaging technology in the detection technology of dental microcracks. The main contributions and research contents of this paper include (1) we designed a near-infrared imaging system for dental imaging, which provides solid data support for the study of advanced segmentation algorithms; (2) we designed a self-equilibrium segmentation algorithm for occult fracture of teeth based on U-Net++. The core module of this algorithm includes a multi-resolution residual encoder and a self-equilibrium composite loss function. The multi-scale residual encoder significantly improves the feature extraction capability of U-Net++. The self-equilibrium combined loss function ensures the consistency of the model’s attention to positive and negative samples, which enhances the robustness of U-Net++. (3) We have demonstrated through extensive experiments that our algorithm performs better than other dental occultation segmentation methods. This study is valuable for improving the diagnostic accuracy of dental occult fractures and promptly detecting the potential danger of the dental.

A Novel YOLOv10-DECA Model for Real-Time Detection of Concrete Cracks

Abstract:The You Only Look Once (YOLO) series algorithms have been widely adopted in concrete crack detection, with attention mechanisms frequently being incorporated to enhance recognition accuracy and efficiency. However, existing research is confronted by two primary challenges: the suboptimal performance of attention mechanism modules and the lack of explanation regarding how these mechanisms influence the model's decision-making process to improve accuracy. To address these issues, a novel Dynamic Efficient Channel Attention (DECA) module is proposed in this study, which is designed to enhance the performance of the YOLOv10 model in concrete crack detection, and the effectiveness of this module is visually demonstrated through the application of interpretable analysis algorithms. In this paper, a concrete dataset with a complex background is used. Experimental results indicate that the DECA module significantly improves the model's accuracy in crack localization and the detection of discontinuous cracks, outperforming the existing Efficient Channel Attention (ECA). When compared to the similarly sized YOLOv10n model, the proposed YOLOv10-DECA model demonstrates improvements of 4.40%, 3.06%, 4.48%, and 5.56% in precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50-95 metrics, respectively. Moreover, even when compared with the larger YOLOv10s model, these performance indicators are increased by 2.00%, 0.04%, 2.27%, and 1.12%, respectively. In terms of speed evaluation, owing to the lightweight design of the DECA module, the YOLOv10-DECA model achieves an inference speed of 78 frames per second, which is 2.5 times faster than YOLOv10s, thereby fully meeting the requirements for real-time detection. These results demonstrate that an optimized balance between accuracy and speed in concrete crack detection tasks has been achieved by the YOLOv10-DECA model. Consequently, this study provides valuable insights for future research and applications in this field.

Abstract:Many structures in civil engineering are symmetrical. Crack detection is a critical task in the monitoring and inspection of civil engineering structures. This study implements a lightweight neural network based on the YOLOv4 algorithm to detect concrete surface cracks. In the extraction of backbone and the design of neck and head, the symmetry concept is adopted. The model modules are improved to reduce the depth and complexity of the overall network structure. Meanwhile, the separable convolution is used to realize spatial convolution, and the SPP and PANet modules are improved to reduce the model parameters. The convolutional layer and batch normalization layer are merged to improve the model inference speed. In addition, using the focal loss function for reference, the loss function of object detection network is improved to balance the proportion of the cracks and the background samples. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of the improved method, 10,000 images (256 × 256 pixels in size) of cracks on concrete surfaces are collected to build the database. The improved YOLOv4 model achieves an mAP of 94.09% with 8.04 M and 0.64 GMacs. The results show that the improved model is satisfactory in mAP, and the model size and calculation amount are greatly reduced. This performs better in terms of real-time detection on concrete surface cracks.
MOD-YOLO: Rethinking the YOLO architecture at the level of feature information and applying it to crack detection

Abstract:Civil infrastructure plays an important role in daily life. If cracks are not found in time, they may cause immeasurable losses to people and property. Therefore, timely and accurate detection and localization of cracks is of great significance. Considering the possible loss of channel information and the lack of receptive field in the previous You Only Look Once (YOLO) series of algorithms, we design a Maintaining the Original Dimension-YOLO (MOD-YOLO) algorithm and apply it to crack detection in civil infrastructure. All the improved schemes in the algorithm are plug-and-play. First, we propose Maintaining the Original information-Deeply Separable Convolution (MODSConv), which solves the problem that we cannot interact with information between channels in the original feature layer (as seen in classical deeply separable convolutions). Second, we propose Global Receptive Field-Space Pooling Pyramid-Fast to obtain global perspective information and mitigate the impact of different scales. Third, Distinctive and Average Features-Coordinate Attention (DAF-CA) is proposed. This not only deals with the reference average information but also considers salient information. With this, we can find and enhance key information more accurately. In addition, we design Maintaining the Original information-Deeply Separable Layer (MODSLayer), which protects the rich information between channels in a way that does not reduce the dimensionality of the channel. At the same time, MODSLayer builds the backbone and neck of the network. The network is named Maintaining the Original information-Deeply Separable Network(MODSNet). Finally, Maintaining the Original Dimension Light-Head is designed for channel non-dimensionality reduction. It maintains as much feature layer information as possible before prediction under the premise of being as lightweight as possible, which significantly improves detection accuracy and detection speed. The experimental results show that our algorithm improves the accuracy by 27.5% to 91.1% on the crack dataset compared to the YOLOX algorithm with the crack detection time basically the same as the YOLOX algorithm, and with the parameter amount reduced by 19.7% and the computational complexity reduced by 35.9%. Meanwhile, experiments on COCO2017, VOC2007 and other datasets verify its good generalizability. The whole vehicle deployment scheme for crack detection is proposed and used to implement the algorithm to detect cracks while the vehicle is moving, and the accompanying experiments prove that our algorithm is able to complete the task of detecting cracks while the vehicle is moving very well.

Abstract:Dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases that, if left untreated, can lead to a variety of oral problems. It mainly occurs inside the pits and fissures on the occlusal/buccal/palatal surfaces of molars and children are a high-risk group for pit and fissure caries in permanent molars. Pit and fissure sealing is one of the most effective methods that is widely used in prevention of pit and fissure caries. However, current detection of pits and fissures or caries depends primarily on the experienced dentists, which ordinary parents do not have, and children may miss the remedial treatment without timely detection. To address this issue, we present a method to autodetect caries and pit and fissure sealing requirements using oral photos taken by smartphones. We use the YOLOv5 and YOLOX models and adopt a tiling strategy to reduce information loss during image pre-processing. The best result for YOLOXs model with tiling strategy is 72.3 mAP.5, while the best result without tiling strategy is 71.2. YOLOv5s6 model with/without tiling attains 70.9/67.9 mAP.5, respectively. We deploy the pre-trained network to mobile devices as a WeChat applet, allowing in-home detection by parents or children guardian.

New technique for detecting cracked teeth and evaluating the crack depth by contrast-enhanced cone beam computed tomography: an in vitro study

Abstract:Abstract Background Cracked teeth may cause various clinical symptoms depending on the extension depth of the crack and the subsequent bacterial infections. However, techniques to reliably determine the extension depths of cracks in teeth before treatment are lacking. The aim of this study was to develop a new technique based on contrast-enhanced cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to improve the accuracy of crack depth evaluation in vitro. Methods We developed an in vitro artificial simulation model of cracked teeth. Pre-experimental CBCT (pre-CBCT), and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) were first performed for all cracked teeth (n = 31). Contrast-enhanced CBCT was then performed by infiltrating the crack with ioversol under vacuum conditions. The sensitivities of pre-CBCT and contrast-enhanced CBCT for the diagnosis of cracked teeth were calculated. According to the K-means clusters, crack depths measured by micro-CT were changed into categorical variables. Bland–Altman plot and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to analyze the consistency of the crack depths between the pre-CBCT and contrast-enhanced CBCT, as well as the ICC between the contrast-enhanced CBCT and micro-CT. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to assess the ability for predicting crack depth in the differential diagnosis using pre-CBCT and contrast-enhanced CBCT. Restricted cubic splines were also used to model the non-linear relationship between the crack depths of contrast-enhanced CBCT and micro-CT. Results The sensitivities of pre-CBCT and contrast-enhanced CBCT were 48.4%, and 67.7%, respectively. The ICC value of crack depth as measured by pre-CBCT and contrast-enhanced CBCT was 0.847 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.380–0.960; P < 0.001). The areas under ROC curves (AUC) of pre-CBCT and contrast-enhanced CBCT were different: the AUC of pre-CBCT was 0.958 ( P = 0.000, 95% CI 0.843–1.074), and the AUC of contrast-enhanced CBCT was 0.979 ( P = 0.000, 95% CI 0.921–1.037), and the difference was not statistically significant (Z = − 0.707, P = 0.480). The ICC value of crack depth as measured by contrast-enhanced CBCT and micro-CT was 0.753 (95% CI 0.248–0.911; P < 0.001). Conclusion Contrast-enhanced CBCT under vacuum conditions with a contrast medium can significantly improve the crack detection rate of cracked teeth; however, it cannot measure the crack depths accurately.

EfficientCrackNet: A Lightweight Model for Crack Segmentation

Abstract:Crack detection, particularly from pavement images, presents a formidable challenge in the domain of computer vision due to several inherent complexities such as intensity inhomogeneity, intricate topologies, low contrast, and noisy backgrounds. Automated crack detection is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of essential infrastructures, including buildings, pavements, and bridges. Existing lightweight methods often face challenges including computational inefficiency, complex crack patterns, and difficult backgrounds, leading to inaccurate detection and impracticality for real-world applications. To address these limitations, we propose EfficientCrackNet, a lightweight hybrid model combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and transformers for precise crack segmentation. EfficientCrackNet integrates depthwise separable convolutions (DSC) layers and MobileViT block to capture both global and local features. The model employs an Edge Extraction Method (EEM) and for efficient crack edge detection without pretraining, and Ultra-Lightweight Subspace Attention Module (ULSAM) to enhance feature extraction. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets Crack500, DeepCrack, and GAPs384 demonstrate that EfficientCrackNet achieves superior performance compared to existing lightweight models, while requiring only 0.26M parameters, and 0.483 FLOPs (G). The proposed model offers an optimal balance between accuracy and computational efficiency, outperforming state-of-the-art lightweight models, and providing a robust and adaptable solution for real-world crack segmentation.
