Abstract:Objective Increasing complexity in healthcare systems necessitates effective handover. While a universal structure is often recommended, many frameworks do not include the patient. A systematic review was completed examining outcomes following handover that included patients or carers using a realist‐orientated paradigm. Methods The research group used CovidenceTM software and followed PRISMA guidelines. A librarian‐led search of Embase, Medline, PsycINFO and SCOPUS yielded 5,790 relevant studies for screening. Included studies reported on peer‐reviewed studies that assessed qualitative or quantitative outcomes resulting from patient‐centred handover. To assess quality, we used the McMaster Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Patient‐orientated and quantitative outcomes are reported descriptively. For qualitative outcomes, we employed a deductive analytical approach. Braun and Clarke's steps were followed to develop themes with group work used to clarify and discuss the various codes. Heterogenous reporting precluded meta‐analysis. Results Thirty studies were eligible (10 mixed methods; 11 quantitative; 9 qualitative) with variable quality and scope. Most studies related to nursing‐led bedside handover and originated in Anglophone countries. Positive effects were reported for patient satisfaction, engagement, autonomy and effective information exchange. Providers reported a positive experience but also barriers to implementation, cognitive load and reducing compliance over time. There were contradicting findings for patient‐orientated outcomes including falls risk. Publication bias may have led to under reporting of negative trials. There was limited reporting on physician‐led handovers that included patients. Conclusions Patient‐centred handover was associated with self‐reported benefits for patients and providers but potential advantages over conventional handover could be undermined by barriers such as time, implementation challenges and a perceived increase in staff workload.

Clinical practice guidelines for person-centred handover practices in emergency departments: a scoping review

Abstract:Objective To review the available information on clinical practice guidelines for person-centred and current handover practices between emergency care practitioners (ECPs) and healthcare professionals in emergency departments (EDs). Collating existing clinical practice guidelines may improve handover practices. Eligibility criteria Clinical practice guidelines for person-centred handover practices between ECPs and healthcare professionals in EDs. ECPs transporting and handing patients over to healthcare professionals in EDs. Healthcare professionals including doctors and nurses working in EDs, who are involved in handovers with ECPs. Studies conducted in EDs, emergency rooms or emergency centres in any geographical area. No language or time restrictions were applied. The search included published and unpublished studies, opinion papers as well as primary sources, and evidence synthesis. All qualitative and quantitative research designs were included. Sources of evidence The literature on clinical practice guidelines for person-centred handover practices was reviewed. Three electronic databases were searched: MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL (EBSCO) and Scopus from inception to May 2023 with no time limits set for the inclusion of published literature in the review. Six guideline organisations were also searched. Charting methods A data extraction tool was developed, pilot-tested and used to extract data from the included studies. Results 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Various mnemonics exist for handover practices. Where mnemonics are not used, participants have identified important information that should be included during handover practices. We did not find any clinical practice guidelines or information on person-centred handover practices in any of the reviewed articles. Conclusions Currently, there is no gold standard for person-centred handover practices, which has led to various practices being implemented. Currently, there is a paucity of literature on person-centred handover practices. Most articles expressed a need for standardised handover practices; however, not all aspects of handover practices can be standardised and should be kept patient and context-specific. Implementation of an Evidence‐Based Practice Nursing Handover Tool in Intensive Care Using the Knowledge‐to‐Action Framework

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Miscommunication during handover has been linked to adverse patient events and is an international patient safety priority. Despite the development of handover resources, standardized handover tools for nursing team leaders (TLs) in intensive care are limited.AIMS: The study aim was to implement and evaluate an evidence-based electronic minimum data set for nursing TL shift-to-shift handover in the intensive care unit using the knowledge-to-action (KTA) framework.METHODS: This study was conducted in a 21-bed medical-surgical intensive care unit in Queensland, Australia. Senior registered nurses involved in TL handover were recruited. Three phases of the KTA framework (select, tailor, and implement interventions; monitor knowledge use; and evaluate outcomes) guided the implementation and evaluation process. A postimplementation practice audit and survey were carried out to determine nursing TL use and perceptions of the electronic minimum data set 3 months after implementation. Results are presented using descriptive statistics (median, IQR, frequency, and percentage).RESULTS: Overall (86%, n = 49), TLs' use of the electronic minimum data set for handover and communication regarding patient plan increased. Key content items, however, were absent from handovers and additional documentation was required alongside the minimum data set to conduct handover. Of the TLs surveyed (n = 35), those receiving handover perceived the electronic minimum data set more positively than TLs giving handover (n = 35). Benefits to using the electronic minimum data set included the patient content (48%), suitability for short-stay patients (16%), decreased time updating (12%), and printing the tool (12%). Almost half of the participants, however, found the minimum data set contained irrelevant information, reported difficulties navigating and locating relevant information, and pertinent information was missing. Suggestions for improvement focused on modifications to the electronic handover interface.LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Prior to developing and implementing electronic handover tools, adequate infrastructure is required to support knowledge translation and ensure clinician and organizational needs are met.

Nursing handovers: An integrative review of the different models and processes available

Abstract:The aim of this study is to explore the different handover models and processes available and their efficacy in improving handover communication within nursing practice. The handover of information is a key nursing responsibility that ensures patient outcomes through continuity of care. This process is widely recognised as an opening for error that may comprise patient safety. This paper is an integrative literature review that employed an inductive exploratory design. A computerised database search was employed including CINAHL, PubMed and Science Direct and a manual citation search with included papers limited to papers published 2005-2016, in English with full text freely available. This included a systematic search strategy, a critical appraisal of the papers utilising the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme, an inductive data extraction and thematic analysis. Sixteen papers were included in this review. The results detailed that there are various handover models in use, yet there is no evidence that any one model displays superior efficacy. The iSoBAR model and its adaptations remain the only model employed across various specialties. More research is warranted to determine if any handover model displays superior efficacy or transferability.

Use of complexity theory in health and social care: a scoping review protocol

Abstract:Introduction: Despite the use of a wide variety of improvement tools and approaches, healthcare organisations continue to struggle in several key areas. Complexity-informed approaches have the potential to offer health and social care a new paradigm for understanding, designing, implementing and evaluating solutions, yet so far has failed to gain the traction anticipated some years ago. There is a growing need for high quality syntheses of the existing knowledge base in this area and given the diversity of theory and approaches, a scoping review is the best approach to curate this knowledge. Methods: A scoping review of relevant literature from January 2000 to present, using the refined Arksey and O'Malley six-stage framework will be conducted. This protocol will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocols Extension for Scoping Reviews. A three-step search strategy will be used. An initial search of databases will be undertaken to identify key search terms followed by an analysis of retrieved papers title and abstract text words, and of index terms used to describe the articles. A second search using all identified keywords and index terms will then be undertaken across all included databases. Third, the reference lists of identified reports and articles will be searched. Authors of primary articles will be contacted and a search for grey material performed. Finally, a complete search strategy of one major database will be included. Ethics and dissemination: As this is a scoping review, ethical approval is not required. The results of the scoping review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at national and international conferences and will guide a large research project investigating teamwork. All data will be stored in accordance with best General Data Protection Regulation practice. Registration: This scoping review protocol has been registered with Open Science Framework.
Bedside handovers in mental health care: An explorative review

Abstract:Introduction: Involving mental healthcare patients in nursing handover practices seems a promising method for increasing patient participation, empowerment, and shared decision-making but is hardly found in practice. Method: An explorative review on bedside handovers in mental health care was conducted. Searched databases included CINHAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase. The search strategy yielded 3126 articles. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Results: Pre- and post-implementation perspectives were described, as well as strategies for implementation. After the implementation of bedside handover, nurses and patients experienced more time spent together and a greater sense of involvement with the care plans could be noticed. Discussion: Being involved in bedside handovers facilitates active participation and open dialogue between nurses and patients. This accelerates the opportunities for patients to take part in shared decision-making and feel recognised as experts in their illness experience. More research on possible differences in effectiveness across different patient diagnoses is recommended. Conclusion: Involving patients in mental health care in handover practices seems a promising method but limited research has been done to explore the meaning it has to mental healthcare nurses and patients.
Interdisciplinary handover between obstetric nursing and neonatal physician teams: an observational study

Abstract:Objective We investigated the content and quality of communication of interservice interprofessional handover between obstetric nurses and neonatal physicians for high-risk deliveries. Design Observational study. Setting Labour and delivery unit at a tertiary care hospital. Method We audio-recorded handovers between obstetric and neonatal teams (n=50) and conducted clinician interviews (n=29). A handover content framework was developed and used to qualitatively code missing core and ancillary content and their potential for adverse events. Results 26 (52%) handovers missed one or more clinical content elements; a third of the handovers missed at least one core clinical content element. Increase in the number of missed clinical content elements increased the odds of potential adverse events by 2.39 (95% CI1.18 to 5.37). Both residents and nurses perceived handovers to be of low quality and inconsistent and attributed it to the lack of a structured handover process. Conclusion Streamlining handover processes by instituting standardisation approaches for both information organisation and communication can improve the quality of neonatal handovers.
Implementing a ward‐level intervention to improve nursing handover communication with a focus on bedside handover—A qualitative study

Abstract:Aim To improve the effectiveness of nursing clinical handover through a qualitative, tailored communication intervention. Design A multisite before and after intervention using qualitative ethnography combined with discourse analysis of nursing handover interactions. Methods We implemented a tailored ward‐based intervention to redesign nursing handover practice with co‐constructed recommendations for organisational and cultural change on seven wards across three affiliated metropolitan hospitals between February 2020 and November 2022. The intervention was informed by pre‐implementation interviews and focus groups with nursing, medical and allied health staff and patients (n = 151) and observed and/or audio‐recorded handover events (n = 233). Post‐intervention we conducted interviews and focus groups (n = 79) and observed and/or audio‐recorded handover events (n = 129) to qualitatively evaluate impact. Results Our translational approach resulted in substantial changes post‐intervention. Nurses conducted more shift‐to‐shift handovers at the bedside, with greater patient interaction and better structured and more comprehensive information transfer, supported by revised handover documentation. Redesigned group handovers were focused and efficient, communicating critical patient information. Conclusion Contextualised training combined with changes to ward‐level systemic factors impeding communication results in improved nursing handovers. Practice change requires strong executive leadership and project governance, combined with effective ward‐level leadership, collaboration and mentoring. The speed and degree of change post‐intervention demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary collaborative research between hospital executive, ward leadership and communication specialists. Relevance to Clinical Practice Nurses are more likely to conduct efficient group handovers and informative, patient‐centred bedside handovers in line with policy when they understand the value of handover and have practical strategies to support communication. Communication training should be combined with broader ward‐level changes to handover practice tailored to the ward context. A multilevel approach results in more effective practice change. Conceptualizing Interprofessional Digital Communication and Collaboration in Health Care: Protocol for a Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: Effective communication and collaboration among health professionals are essential prerequisites for patient-centered care. However, interprofessional teams require suitable structures and tools to efficiently use their professional competencies in the service of high-quality care appropriate to the patient's life situation. In this context, digital tools potentially enhance interprofessional communication and collaboration and lead to an organizationally, socially, and ecologically sustainable health care system. However, there is a lack of studies systematically assessing the critical factors for successfully implementing tools for digitally supported interprofessional communication and collaboration in the health care setting. Furthermore, an operationalization of this concept is missing. Objective: The aim of the proposed scoping review is to (1) identify factors influencing the development, implementation, and adoption processes of digital tools for interprofessional communication in the health care sector and (2) analyze and synthesize the (implicit) definition, dimensions, and concepts of digitally supported communication and collaboration among health care professionals in the health care setting. Studies focusing on digital communication and collaboration practices among health care professionals, including medical doctors and qualified medical assistants, in any health care setting will be included in this review. Methods: To address these objectives, an in-depth analysis of heterogeneous studies is needed, which is best achieved through a scoping review. Within this proposed scoping review, which adheres to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, 5 databases (SCOPUS, CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, and PsycInfo) will be searched for studies assessing digital communication and collaboration among various health care professionals in different health care settings. Studies focusing on health care providers or patient interaction through digital tools and non-peer-reviewed studies will be excluded. Results: Key characteristics of the studies included will be summarized through descriptive analysis, using diagrams and tables. We will synthesize and map the data and conduct a qualitative in-depth thematic analysis of definitions and dimensions of interprofessional digital communication and collaboration among health care and nursing professionals. Conclusions: Results from this scoping review may help in establishing digitally supported collaborations between various stakeholders in the health care setting and successfully implementing new forms of interprofessional communication and collaboration. A video analysis of clinical handovers between paramedics and emergency care staff

Abstract:Aims: Studies examining communication during clinical handovers involving paramedics are rare. A recent National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) report has noted a significant gap in our knowledge and understanding of what happens during clinical handovers between ambulance services and emergency departments. This PhD study has used a video analysis to understand issues in communication and teamwork during these clinical handovers by examining cases of good practice. Methods: A video analysis of 100 examples of handovers from different TV programmes, including 24 Hours in A&E and The Real A&E, was conducted. This methodology emphasised the capturing of real-world practice, without the limitation of semi-structured interviews which are reliant on recall of events. These examples highlighted how interprofessional teamworking and communication were conducted during these high pressured and complex situations. The videos were transcribed verbatim and idiosyncratically to show variances in the style of communication as well as the non-verbal actions used by the staff during the exchange of patient information. Results: The emergent findings demonstrate a variety of interactional strategies that paramedics use when conducting handovers. These strategies often involved a paramedic team member drawing attention to themselves by stating they were ready to do the handover or loudly introducing the patient's name. This was typically followed by an account of the treatment the paramedic team provided and ended with questions from those receiving the handover. The questions asked by the receiving team would be about the treatment provided and during this exchange the paramedic team would justify the methods used in assisting the patient. When handovers were being taken for high-risk patients, for example 'haemorrhaging of a femoral artery', the structure of the handover changed. In such examples, the paramedic team were found to dictate how the receiving team handled continuation of treatment for the patient. Conclusion: The variations in handover examples that have been captured and analysed have been beneficial in understanding the interactions between paramedics and the emergency care team. Initial findings have shown how the structure of communication during handovers can be altered due to situational or contextual factors. These results have highlighted where potential improvements in communication can be made during handovers, which would subsequently increase patient safety and experience.

Abstract:AIM: This study attempts to address the content of nursing handover when compared with formal documentation sources.BACKGROUND: The nursing handover has attracted criticism in the literature in relation to its continuing role in modern nursing. Criticisms include those related to time expenditure, content, accuracy and the derogatory terms in which patients are sometimes being discussed.METHODS: Twenty-three handovers, covering all shifts, from one general medical ward were audio-taped. Their content was analysed and classified according to where, within a ward's documentation systems, the information conveyed could be located.FINDINGS: Results showed that almost 84.6% of information discussed could be located within existing ward documentation structures and 9.5% of information discussed was not relevant to ongoing patient care. Only 5.9% of handover content involved discussions related to ongoing care or ward management issues that could not be recorded in an existing documentation source.LIMITATIONS: The results of this study are representative of only one ward in one Australian Hospital. Specific documentation sources were also not checked to determine their content.CONCLUSION: Streamlining the nursing handover may improve the quality of the information presented and reduce the amount of time spent in handover.

Abstract:Type 2 diabetes is increasing worldwide in epidemic proportions. Its associated morbidity and mortality is imposing a major burden on the health care system. Based on a better understanding of the pathophysiology of glucose intolerance, clinical trials on the prevention of diabetes have been performed. It has now been demonstrated that diet and exercise, metformin, acarbose, and troglitazone can prevent or at least delay the development of diabetes in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). It is now generally accepted that insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction are major factors involved in the development of diabetes. The relative contribution of insulin resistance versus beta-cell dysfunction on the pathogenesis of diabetes has aroused much debate. These two processes should be studied in relation to one another: their relationship is best described as hyperbolic in nature. When this relationship is taken into consideration, it becomes evident that subjects at risk of developing type 2 diabetes have beta-cell dysfunction before they develop glucose intolerance. Insulin resistance may be mostly explained by the presence of obesity and accelerate the progression to diabetes in subjects with the propensity to beta-cell failure. By the time hyperglycemia occurs, impairment in both insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion are present. There are still few data on insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion from the trials on the prevention of diabetes. The few data that we do have suggest that most interventions mostly have an effect on insulin resistance. By reducing insulin resistance, they protect and preserve the beta-cell function. No intervention has yet shown any direct effect on beta-cell function.

Abstract:The present work aims to map the available scientific evidence on the benefits of using the ISBAR tool in the nursing care of acutely ill adult patients' handover in an emergency department context. To this end, a scoping review was conducted, according to the guidelines proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), to answer the following research question: "What are the benefits of using the ISBAR tool in the nursing care of acutely ill adult patients' handover in an emergency department context?" The bibliographic search was carried out during August and September 2023 in the following electronic databases: CINAHL Complete; MEDLINE Complete; Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews; and Cochrane Methodology Register. Only works published between 2013 and 2023 were deemed fit for inclusion. All the included studies (9) show that ISBAR methodology, as a standardized tool for transferring nursing care in the emergency service, allows for a safe, clear, and concise transition of nursing care. The benefits relate to patient and professional safety, continuity, and quality of care, as well as patient and professional comfort, with health gains.

Abstract:Introduction: Poor outcomes following the transition from hospital back to community living are common, especially for older adults with complex health and social care needs. Some health care systems now have multiple interprofessional teams (in hospital and community) to support care transitions. These teams will need to be well coordinated to improve care transition outcomes. Methods: We conducted a scoping review to identify and map peer-reviewed literature on how interprofessional teams are working together to support older adults transitioning from hospital back to the community. We used the six-stage framework developed by Levac and colleagues (2010). Procedures were guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review guidelines. Results: Our structured search and screening process resulted in 70 articles, published between 2000 and 2022, from 14 counties. Within these articles, 26 programs were described that used interprofessional teams in both the hospital and community. Discussion: The qualitative articles suggested that effective teamwork is very important for promoting care transition quality, but the quantitative research did not report on team-related outcomes. Quantitative research has described, but not evaluated, strategies for promoting interprofessional collaboration. Conclusion: Future research should focus on evaluating processes used to promote effective interprofessional teamwork in care transition interventions.

Factors that influence the clinical supervision implementation for nurses: A scoping review

Abstract:Aims: The aim of this review is to identify and map the evidence available on the factors that influence the implementation of clinical supervision for nurses. Design: The scoping review was conducted and reported following the JBI methodology for scoping reviews. Data sources: Searches were conducted on MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases on 28 March 2023. Review methods: A total of 1398 studies were imported into Covidence for screening. Researchers screened the papers according to the inclusion criteria. Empirical studies in English focusing on the implementation of clinical supervision for nurses were included, without year restrictions. Data from 16 studies were extracted and organized according to the constructs within the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) domains: intervention characteristics, outer setting, inner setting, characteristics of individuals, and process. Results: When compared with the CFIR constructs, it was found that the influence of the outer setting on implementation was less explored in the literature. Most of the reviewed data highlighted recurring factors, particularly logistical challenges of nursing work such as shift work and lack of control over work time. Organizational culture and managerial support were also identified as significant factors in the implementation. Another significant challenge in implementation was the variety in clinical supervision's design, purpose, and application, despite sharing the same label, leading to questions about whether studies are implementing the same practice. Conclusion: Policy documents should clearly define both the design and purpose of clinical supervision, beyond just its conceptual definition. Greater emphasis on equitable implementation of clinical supervision is necessary to prevent perpetuating existing inequalities. We conclude that implementation of such complex interventions is not linear, and the implementation strategies need to align with expected implementation challenges. Impact of a blended curriculum on nursing handover quality: a quality improvement project

Abstract:Context and objective The negative consequences of inadequate nursing handovers on patient safety are widely acknowledged, both within the literature as in practice. Evidence regarding strategies to improve nursing handover is, however, lacking. This study investigates the effect of a tailored, blended curriculum on nurses’ perception of handover quality. Methods We used a pre-test/post-test design within four units of a Belgian general hospital. Our educational intervention consisted of an e-learning module on professional communication and a face-to-face session on the use of a structured method for handovers. All nurses completed this blended curriculum (n=87). We used the Handover Evaluation Scale (HES) to evaluate nurses’ perception of handover quality before and after the intervention. The HES was answered by 87.4% of the nurses (n=76 of 87) before and 50.6% (n=44 of 87) after the intervention. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the validity of the HES. Results The original factor structure did not fit with our data. We identified a new HES structure with acceptable or good fit indices. The overall internal consistency of our HES structure was considered adequate. Perception of nurses on Relevance of information showed a significant improvement (M=53.19±4.33 vs M=61.03±6.01; p=0.04). Nurses also felt that the timely provision of patient information improved significantly (M=4.50±0.34 vs M=5.16±0.40; p=0.01). Conclusion The applied intervention resulted in an improved awareness on the importance of Relevance of information during handovers. After our intervention, the nurses’ perception of the HES item ‘Patient information is provided in a timely manner’ also improved significantly. We are aware that the educational intervention is only the first step to achieve the long-term implementation of a culture of professional communication based on mutual support.
Reproducibility and relative validity of food group intake in a food frequency questionnaire developed for Nepalese diet

Abstract:Abstract We developed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) designed to measure the dietary practices of adult Nepalese. The present study examined the validity and reproducibility of the FFQ. To evaluate the reproducibility of the FFQ, 116 subjects completed two 115-item FFQ across a four-month interval. Six 24-h dietary recalls were collected (1 each month) to assess the validity of the FFQ. Seven major food groups and 23 subgroups were clustered from the FFQ based on macronutrient composition. Spearman correlation coefficients evaluating reproducibility for all food groups were greater than 0.5, with the exceptions of oil. The correlations varied from 0.41 (oil) to 0.81 (vegetables). All crude spearman coefficients for validity were greater than 0.5 except for dairy products, pizzas/pastas and sausage/burgers. The FFQ was found to be reliable and valid for ranking the intake of food groups for Nepalese dietary intake.

Abstract:Introduction Care aides are health workers who deliver hands-on care to patients across the healthcare continuum. The use of technology in healthcare delivery is increasing, and evidence regarding how care aides' attitudes may either facilitate or hinder the adoption of healthcare technologies is lacking. The aim of the proposed scoping review is to examine available evidence regarding care aides' attitudes towards the adoption of innovation and factors that may influence the sustainable use of technology in healthcare delivery. Published studies, grey literature and review articles that identify a method for the review, conference abstracts and website publications regarding the attitude, uptake and sustainable use of technology in care delivery by care aides will be included. For abstracts that have resulted in publications, the full publications will be included. The search for evidence commenced in June 2023 and will end in March 2024. Methods and analysis The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) method will be used to conduct the review. The CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, ProQuest, PubMed, SCOPUS, PROSPERO, Web of Science and JBI Evidence Synthesis databases will be searched using keywords for publications within the last 20 years to examine trends in health technology and attitudes of care aides towards innovation over the last two decades. A search of grey literature and websites will be conducted. The reference list of the retrieved articles will be used to identify additional literature. The search results will be exported into a literature management tool for screening and analysis. Article screening will be performed by two authors and if a third is needed to resolve any differences. Data analysis will be guided by two theoretical frameworks. Ethics and dissemination No ethics approval is required. The findings will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal and presented in conferences. Organisation of clinical research in intensive care units: A scoping review

Abstract:Background: Clinical research is essential for the development and progress of therapies and procedures. Intensive care units (ICUs) manage the sickest patients. Numerous clinical trials are organised in ICUs to evaluate new treatments or support techniques. Concomitantly, new professions involved in clinical research set-ups are emerging. Aim: The aim of this scoping review was to identify the nature and extent of research evidence on the organisation of clinical research in ICUs. Methods: This review focusses on observational and qualitative narrative studies dealing with clinical research organisation in ICUs, with a special interest in structures coordinating research, the roles of clinical research professionals, and the training required. Medline and Embase were analysed between January 2000 and June 2024. Assessment of the study quality was based on the Let Evidence Guide Every New Decision evaluation system and the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale. Results: Of the 14 studies reviewed, four were narrative and 10 observational descriptive. All were based on cross-sectional surveys. Most studies were carried out in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia/New Zealand. ICU clinical research professionals were mostly female nurses aged between 31 and 50 years who had a wide diversity of training profiles and performed greatly varied tasks from data collection to publication of the article. Reported job satisfaction depended on the degree of autonomy, the workload, the extent of professional recognition, and opportunities for professional promotion. Conclusions: The organisation of ICU clinical research reflects considerable diversity in training, tasks, job organisation, and responsibilities.
