Abstract:Corrosion products and electric fields are capable of changing proteins to antigens, thus permitting the immunological system to identify the biomaterial as foreign. The reaction between corrosion products and a macro-molecule also leads to an antigen (carrier antigen), such as conformational changes of a macro-molecule, e.g. a protein, caused by the electric field at the implant surface (modified macro-molecule antigen). While the sensitivity to corrosion and the effectiveness of galvanic elements is measurable by electrochemical methods, suitable methods of determining the field strength in the vicinity of biomaterial surfaces are still unavailable. The influence of the double layer of uncoated and coated titanium surfaces on the conformation of proteins and their conversion to antigens are investigated with polyclonal antibodies capable of identifying the unchanged protein despite adsorption to the surface. 14C-marked Bovine Serum Albumin serves as a model protein. Determination of the total number of protein molecules adsorbed is effected via the detection of the emitted electrons. The quotient of the concentration of natural proteins to the concentration of adsorbed molecules gives the biocompatibility index, which is independent of the surface area, and gives an indication of the expected biocompatibility of the material. The results of the biological tests of titanium and two coating materials on titanium were confirmed in an animal experiment. It is possible that in the future immunological tests may replace experiments in animals.
Knowledge of scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery amongst medical students at a tertiary hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal

Abstract:Background: Diagnosis and surgical treatment of varieties of traumatic, pathologic, functional, and aesthetic disorders of stomatognathic system are included in the scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). Although this speciality plays a significant part in dentistry and medicine; dental and medical professionals still do not fully comprehend the exact depth. Objectives: To understand the level of knowledge amongst medical students of different levels, to promote the scope of OMFS among health care communities, and establish a fair understanding of the speciality’s contribution. Methods: This questionnaire based descriptive, cross-sectional survey was done on purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from 2022 October to 2022 December among medical students and interns of Nepal Medical College via questionnaire after receiving institutional ethical clearance. Data were entered, coded, and edited using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analysed using SPSS v.20. Descriptive statistics are presented in frequency, percentage, and mean. Results: A total of 254 study participants were included of which 149 (58.66%) were male and 105 (41.34%) were female. Of all, 99 (38.98%) were first year medical students, 80 (31.50%) were second year students, and 75 (29.53%) were interns. Mean knowledge score in preclinical students was 6.27 ± 1.73 and 7.12 ± 1.85 in interns. The result shows adequate knowledge for both groups. Conclusion: Findings of this study assesses the level of knowledge of medical students at a tertiary hospital which will help to highlight the need for awareness and education regarding OMFS, promoting its development, contribution, and impact among the health care professionals.
Factors Influencing the Selection of Dentistry as a Career Among Prospective Candidates: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to analyse the impact of sociodemographic factors on dental school candidates' decision to pursue dentistry as their career of choice. Materials and methods: Candidates shortlisted by three dental schools were invited to participate in a self-administered questionnaire study, featuring a validated instrument containing sociodemographic questions and 16 motivational items grouped into four domains: economic, professional, vocational and personal background reasons. The variations in motivational item scores across sociodemographic factors were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test (age, sex, ethnicity, having relatives in the dental profession and dentistry as the first choice) and Kruskal-Wallis test (dental school and family income). Results: A total of 295 dental school candidates participated in the study (Universiti Teknologi MARA: 137; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia: 99; MAHSA University: 59). Approximately 95% of participants identified dentistry as their primary career choice, with the vocational motivation of 'I like to help people' being the most prominent motivational factor. Dental school emerged as the critical factor significantly influencing three quarters of the motivational items. Sex, ethnicity and having relatives in the dental profession were the remaining factors significantly associated with variations in certain motivational items. Both dental school and ethnicity significantly affected four motivational domains (economic, professional, vocational and personal background). Conclusion: This study provides an insightful overview of the sociodemographic factors that impact career decision-making among prospective dental students. The scores for most motivational items varied among shortlisted candidates in three dental schools. The findings hold implications for policy development in dentistry by universities and public policymakers.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIntroduction: Career choice in dentistry can provide an overview of the number of dental graduates who will pursue careers as clinicians and non-clinicians. This study aimed to describe the career choices and the influencing factors of the selected career choice of the Bachelor and profession program students. Methods: The method used was a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The research population consists of all Bachelor and professional students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Padjadjaran University. Purposive sampling technique was used, with the inclusion criteria of active Bachelor and Profession students. The sample size was determined using the proportion estimation formula with a final sample of 286 respondents. The research instrument was an online questionnaire. Furthermore, the data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis. Results: Clinician careers (64.6%) were the most preferred, followed by combined careers (34.6%), and non-clinician careers (0.8%). The most preferred clinician career was being a specialist (27,6%) rather than a general practice dentist (25,9%). Orthodontics specialist was the most chosen. Factors that influenced career preferences were intrinsic and extrinsic. The intrinsic factor was a great opportunity to obtain in-depth knowledge. The extrinsic factors were high earning potential, sufficient earnings to fulfill needs, and flexible working time. The majority of chosen work institutions were private hospitals (30%). Most respondents chose to work in urban areas (91%) due to accessibility and strategic reasons. Conclusion: The most preferred career choice was as clinician. Career as a specialist dentist was most desirable among those who chose to be a clinician, with the most chosen as orthodontist. The main intrinsic and extrinsic factors were a great opportunity to obtain in-depth knowledge and a high salary. Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Objectives</h3><p>An insight into students' motivation and confidence in the choice of entering and remaining in dental education is essential. The understanding of how choices are made can help universities in the planning of admission policies. This study aimed to evaluate the career choice influences, motivation and confidence in the choices made into dental education.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>A mixed‐method design was employed, using both quantitative and qualitative data. One hundred seventy‐three questionnaires were distributed to all registered dental students, with a response rate of 85%. The questionnaire explored students' demographics and factors that influenced their career choice. Seven focus groups were facilitated with related data recorded and transcribed verbatim.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>The quantitative data revealed the desire to help others, and socioeconomic factors were influential, while for parents' influence, the mother's influence was statistically significant. Qualitatively, results converged and complemented quantitative data; there was a balance between helping others and socio‐economic and familial influences. There was an increase in confidence in the choice made as students advanced in their dental education. The results indicate that informed awareness of the dental program structure is essential before embarking on a dental career.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>The factors that impacted on choice were helping others, socioeconomic factors and the influence on choice from family. They were generally satisfied with their choice and were confident in the choice they made. This confidence, however, was not reflected until the more advanced clinical stages of their dental education.</p></section>

Abstract:Introduction: A person’s career is the process and actions he or she takes to achieve lifetime goals through his or her occupation.Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions one will ever make. Dentistry yields an extensive scope of career and employment chances as a general professional and specialist Objectives: This study sought the career choices of public health dentistry by dental students and association between sociodemographic profiles of study population with reasons of choosing public health dentistry as a career. Methods: Cross sectional study conducted atInstitute of Dentistry, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro from 1st March 2021 to 31st May 2021.Sample of 197 undergraduate students were approached using convenience sampling. Data was collected through preformed, validated paper-based survey questionnaire. Association between various socio-demographic variables and career interests of participants was sought by Chi-square tests at 0.05 (2-tailed) level of significance. Results: Around 69.54% of participants belonged to age group of 21-23 years with females accounting for 59.39%. Around 40% participants chose dentistry to please people. A large majority around 62.42% respondents stated that they find public health dentistry an interesting field. Age (p=0.08) and gender (p=0.06) of the individuals were not statistically connected with future career choice in dentistry. Conclusion: Reasons for choosing public health dentistry as a career among the surveyed dental students are mostly related to socio-demographic factors.
How clinical exposure improves dental students' understanding of oral and maxillofacial surgery: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract:Purpose To assess dental students' understanding of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) practice areas and examine changes in referral preferences across their educational progression in Israel. Methods A cross‐sectional survey was conducted among 349 dental students from two Israeli universities (46.5% response rate). The primary independent variable was the year of study (pre‐clinical vs. clinical years). The main outcome variables included perceptions of OMFS scope and referral preferences for various procedures. Covariates included demographics and prior OMFS exposure. Chi‐square tests, linear trend analysis, and mediation analysis were performed. Results Students in clinical years exhibited a broader understanding of OMFS scope compared to pre‐clinical years. Referral preferences to OMFS increased significantly for complex procedures like facial skeletal deformities (46.2% to 61.3%, p = 0.004) and oral cancer (66.2% to 78.9%, p = 0.008). The perception of extractions as the primary OMFS procedure increased from 63.6% in the first year to 77.6% in the sixth year (p = 0.033). Abstract:Orthodontic implants have become a reliable method in orthodontic practice for providing temporary additional anchorage and are useful to control skeletal anchorage in less compliant patients or in other cases where absolute anchorage is necessary. The advantages are easy insertion, decreased patient discomfort, low price, immediate loading, reduced diameter, versatility in the forces to be used, ease of cleaning, and ease of removal. This study was done as a questionnaire survey which was done in April 2021 and answered by the UG students of the Saveetha Dental College. Students who were involved in the survey included third years, final years and CRRI (Interns). The survey involved completion of a predesigned questionnaire containing 2 sections with a total of ten questions. Set-1 questions were about the demographic details like their Name, gender and the year of study. Questionnaire was sent through an online forum Survey planet only to students practicing in clinics (Third years, Final years and CRRIs). From the results obtained it showed that 55% of them were third year students, 28% were 4th years and 17% were Interns. 62% of them were Females, 38% were Males. The year of study of students was in association with awareness of orthodontic implants, Orthodontic implants can contribute significantly to being more efficient than traditional anchorage methods besides making treatments more predictable.
Management of Cardiovascular Disease Patients with Periodontitis Requiring Dental Treatment - A KAP Study among Dental Students

Abstract:Background: It is frequently observed that dental students require so many consents to manage medically compromised patients, especially cardiovascular patients with periodontitis requiring dental treatment. Aims and objectives: The present study aimed to assess the dental students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients with periodontitis requiring dental treatment. Material and methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among 611 dental undergraduate and postgraduate students (branches of Periodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, and Public Health and Dentistry) of central Gujrat. Self-administered structured questionnaires with 23 questions were distributed in pen-and-paper physical format. Statistical analysis for descriptive statistics like frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, confidence interval, one-way analysis of variance, post hoc test for multiple comparisons, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson's correlation has been done by MS Excel and STATA/IC-13. Results: As per the post hoc test, both groups of students have significantly different knowledge (-4.20210*, P = 0.028) and their practices (0.68632, P = 0.968) but no significant difference between their attitudes (-6.22828, P = 0.089). According to the Pearson correlation test, a weak positive/no relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and practice is reported in both study groups. There is a weak positive relation between knowledge and attitudes (0.270) and between knowledge and practices (0.121), and a similar relationship between their attitudes and practices (0.172) was observed in both groups. Conclusion: Correct knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding dental management of CVD patients with periodontitis can reduce medical consent to improve the treatment quality of dental students.

Abstract:The parameters which influence the determination of the major glycosylated haemoglobin fraction (HbA1c) with the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method are described. Conditions for an optimal determination method are given. The correlation with the fast haemoglobin determination by column chromatography is greater than 0.9. The influence of storage on blood, washed erythrocytes and haemolysate in respect to HbA1c values obtained with the method described, was also investigated. Normal and pathological values from 78 patients correlate well with the fasting blood sugar levels (r greater than 0.9).

Abstract:Introduction: Students' perspectives regarding their educational experiences play an essential role in curriculum planning and to evaluate effectiveness of dental courses being taught. The current study was aimed to assess the undergraduate dental students' self-perceived confidence level while performing different stages of endodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: A 30-item e-questionnaire was sent to 96 4 th and 5 th year dental students. The students were requested to grade their self-confidence level regarding various stages of endodontic treatment. Moreover, questions related to endodontics discipline difficulty level and students' preferences of file systems were also asked. Data were statistically analyzed. Results: The response rate was 94.8%. The students reported the highest confidence level for treating maxillary anterior teeth (4.39 ± 0.94) and the lowest confidence score was noted for maxillary molars (2.75 ± 1.00). Regarding different stages of endodontic treatment, students exhibited the highest confidence level for rubber dam placement (4.43 ± 0.70) while the lowest confidence was documented for managing inter-appointment flare-up (3.45 ± 0.92). A significant association was noted between the level of the academic year and stages of endodontic treatment for the items related to root canal obturation ( P = 0.004) and restoration of endodontically treated teeth ( P = 0.01). Considering various endodontic indications, 82.4% of the students were confident/very confident while treating the patients with irreversible pulpitis. Contrary to this, the students were least confident while managing the teeth with immature apices (16.5%). Conclusion: Undergraduate dental students exhibited higher confidence for performing different stages of basic endodontic treatment. Conversely, they reported lower confidence for carrying out more complex procedures.

Abstract:Background: Patient’s perception of own facial appearance is also an important contributing factor for treatment planning. Also, knowledge and attitude of patients to orthodontic treatment is becoming more important in orthodontics these days. The study aimed to assess self-perception, awareness and attitude towards orthodontic treatment among dental students and interns. Methods: Data was collected through cross-sectional survey conducted among the dental students and dental interns in KIST Medical College through online google form. Study duration was from August 2021 - October 2021. The data was entered in SPSS software 20. Frequency distribution was generated for all variables. Categorical variables were evaluated using Chi-square test. Results: About 96.7% of the participants believe that orthodontic treatment will improve facial appearance. 61.5% believe that orthodontic treatment is a lengthy and painful procedure. 44.5% does not think orthodontic treatment weakens the teeth. 50% of female believe that orthodontic treatment will give the promising result. Statistically significant difference was obtained with respect to preference of different types of braces among students of different years. 54.9% of the participants are satisfied with the arrangements of their teeth, 20.9% had avoid smiling and 22.5% felt lack of confidence because of the appearance of their teeth. Almost half of the participants (50.5%) think they should have orthodontic treatment and 76.2% readily agree to orthodontic treatment if suggested by the dentist. Conclusions: Dental students and interns had a good knowledge about orthodontic treatment and positive attitude towards it. Gender difference exists regarding the awareness of orthodontic treatment. Statistically significant difference was found in preference of different types of braces in students of different years and interns.
Ophthalmology as a career choice among medical students: a survey of students at a Canadian medical school

Abstract:Abstract Background There is a lack of investigations into the factors that lead medical students to pursue increasingly competitive post-graduate training programs. We sought to determine the factors that influence medical students’ opinions on ophthalmology as a career and on ophthalmological medical education. Methods An anonymous 36-question survey was distributed to all medical students across the four program years at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry as a non-probabilistic convenience sample. Survey results were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U tests to determine significant differences between study sub-populations. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to identify correlates for positive views towards ophthalmology. Results 81% of questions had a mean positive response amongst the students. Students held negative views regarding the amount of exposure to ophthalmology in medical school. The greatest differences in opinion regarding ophthalmology were seen between those with more exposure and interest in ophthalmology compared to their counterparts with less. Regression analysis identified interest in ophthalmology as a significant correlate to a positive opinion in the field. Conclusions Our survey demonstrates that while most students had positive views about ophthalmology, some aspects were viewed negatively. Students felt there was a lack of exposure, both educationally and clinically to ophthalmology, which may contribute to some misconceptions of the field. Early exposure appeared to be critical to forming positive opinions of ophthalmology and could be emphasized in medical education.

Motivations for a Career in Dentistry among Dental Students and Dental Interns in Kenya

Abstract:A number of factors have been cited as determinants for choosing a career in dentistry around the globe. The purpose of this study was to determine motivations for a career in dentistry among dental students and dental interns in Kenya. This was a cross-sectional study where 293 individuals participated by filling and returning self-administered questionnaires. The mean age of all respondents was 22.3 years. Overall, 59.5% of the respondents had selected dentistry as their preferred career at the end of high school. Majority (76.1%) of the respondents agreed that personal interest in dentistry was an important motivating factor for them. This was followed closely by a desire to help or serve people (74%), a desire for a flexible work schedule (63%), and an aspiration to be self-employed (61.8%). There was no difference between males and females regarding these as motivating factors. On the other hand, among factors that the respondents felt had the lowest influence on their choice of dentistry was parental influence, where only 22% of the respondents indicated that this was a motivating factor for them. Other potential motivating factors such as influence by friends and siblings (30.3%) as well as career talk and guidance (41.3%) were also ranked low. In general, the respondents indicated that they were motivated much more by personal and humanitarian factors, when compared to financial and societal factors.
Reasons for choosing dentistry as a career among dental students in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to identify reasons and influential factors for choosing dentistry as a career among dental students in Saudi Arabia. The preferred field of dental specialty following graduation will also be investigated. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was developed and circulated among undergraduate dental students studying at a private dental college in Saudi Arabia. A list of 16 reasons that possibly influenced students’ decision to study dentistry was presented and participants were invited to indicate on a 5-point Likert scale the extent each reason influenced their choice of dentistry as a career. The listed reasons were categorized into economic, professional, vocational, social and personal reasons. Results: Totally, 788 out of 970 questionnaires were completed (response rate: 81%). Proportion of female students exceeded proportion of male students (59% and 41%, respectively) and most participants were Saudi students (73%). The top three influential factors on students’ decision to study dentistry were “Dentistry is a prestigious profession,” “I like to treat people and improve their appearance,” and “I like working with people and caring for them.” Variations were identified between male and female students and also between Saudi and non-Saudi students in the reasons to choose dentistry as a career. The vast majority of participants (94%) expressed a desire to follow a postgraduate study. Orthodontics and oral surgery were the most preferred dental specialties. Conclusion: The social and vocational reasons were the main factors that motivated this group of dental students to attend a dental program. Greater training opportunities should be planned to accommodate the speculated increasing demand for postgraduate dental education in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of oral health knowledge, attitude, and practise among engineering, paramedical, and nursing staffs, as well as the factors that influence them. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted using voluntarily filled questionnaires which was circulated among 342 study participants.The recorded data were analyzed using the SPSS version 26. The descriptive statistics included computation of percentages, means and standard deviation. The statistical tests applied for the analysis were, Chi-square test and One Way ANOVA. The Confidence Level and the Level of Significance were set at 95% and 5%, respectively. Results: The response rate was 95.4%. More than half (69.1%) of the professionals and other staff members participating in the study were females. While comparing the scores of the three groups among education levels attitude section and practice section was found to be statistically significant (p=0.05). The difference in scores in the practice domain when compared with gender was found to be statistically significant (p=0.004). Conclusion: It is concluded that paramedical personnel, engineering, and nursing professionals had significantly less understanding of oral health and endodontic operations. However, all of the groups practised appropriate dental hygiene.

Abstract:Backgrounds: The patient’s satisfaction is considered as a direct measure to assess the performance of clinicians and the clinics.The present study was, therefore, conducted to evaluate the level of patients’ satisfaction with treatment services provided by undergraduate students at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University. The main purpose of this investigation was to explore opportunities for further improvement in the BDS program as well as undergraduate dental care training at the College. Methods: Patients’ feedback was sought through cross-sectional research wherein a specialized questionnaire was circulated among all undergraduate clinics located at male and female campuses of the college. A total of 3200 survey forms were distributed among patients who were treated in the undergraduate clinics. The supervisors were requested to clarify any questions or ambiguity encountered by their patients in filling in the survey forms. The questionnaire consisted of 19 questions addressing all aspects of the patients’ care. Five-point Likert scale varying from 'strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree' was used to evaluate the feedback. The data were subjected to statistical analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 21 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) Results: The 2558 patients participated in the present investigations representing 80% of the total population. The highest level of patient's satisfaction was observed for preparedness, knowledge, and helpfulness of the young doctors by 88.97% of patients (n=2048). Only 9.6% (n=221) and 1.31% (n=33) patients attributed moderate and low levels of satisfaction to this question, respectively. Likewise, 86.78% (n=1963) patients were found highly pleased with the young doctors who explained all procedures before and during their treatment. The percentage of patients with a moderate and minimal level of satisfaction to this attribute was 11.67% (n=264) and 1.55% (n=35), respectively. The lowest satisfaction was observed concerning waiting time, followed by the comfort of the waiting room and knowledge of young dentists about the accurate estimation of expenses incurred in case some material was required wherein 61.44% (n=1388), 63.75% (n=1486) and 77.91% (n=1552) patients associated high satisfaction level, respectively. In fact, these questions proved as areas for further improvement. Conclusions: Results of the present investigations provided benchmark data to map and compare patients’ satisfaction with their treatment in undergraduate dental clinics. Most patients in the present investigations were found satisfied with the quality and standard of care provided to them in the undergraduate clinics. The survey results further reported that most patients had trust in the knowledge, capabilities, and skills of the undergraduate dental students. However, they showed dissatisfaction over waiting time, comfort in the waiting rooms and students’ knowledge about the accurate estimation of correct expenses concerning the dental materials required for treatment procedures.
