Abstract:BACKGROUND & AIMS:Association between zinc intake and digestive tract cancers risk has been reported in several epidemiological studies, while the results were controversial. The aim of our study was to get a systemic review of this issue. METHODS:PUBMED and EMBASE were searched up to April 2013, supplemented with manual-screening for relevant articles. Two independent reviewers independently extracted data from eligible studies, risk ratio (RR) or odds ratio (OR) with 95% CIs for the highest versus lowest categories of zinc intake was adopted. Either a fixed- or a random-effects model was adopted to estimate overall odds ratios. Besides, dose-response, subgroup, and publication bias analyses were applied. RESULTS:Nineteen studies with approximately 400,000 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled relative risk (RR) of overall digestive tract cancers for the highest versus lowest categories of zinc intake was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.70-0.96; p = 0.013). Comparing the highest with lowest categories, higher zinc intake was significantly associated with reduced colorectal cancer risk (pooled RR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.70-0.92; p = 0.002), while zinc intake was not statistically associated with gastric cancer risk (pooled RR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.64-1.29; p = 0.581) or esophageal cancer risk (pooled RR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.44-1.17; p = 0.187). However, subgroup analyses showed that zinc intake was significantly associated with esophageal cancer risk and gastric cancer risk in Asia, but not in America and Europe. CONCLUSIONS:Dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with digestive tract cancers, especially colorectal cancer risk in this study.
Association of Whole Blood Lead Level with Advanced Colorectal Neoplasia:A Population-Based Case-Control Study

Abstract:Objective To explore the association between whole blood lead concentration and advanced colorectal neoplasia (CRN) and to provide evidence for colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention and control. Methods The cases of the study were 272 advanced CRN identified from April 2014 to December 2016 in the participants of a CRC early diagnosis and treatment program including face-to-face questionnaire interview, physical examination and laboratory test conducted among the residents of Jiashan county, Zhejiang province; the 605 controls were gender- and age (± 5 years)-frequency matched healthy participants of the program. Results The geometric mean (geometric standard error) of whole blood lead concentration (μg/L) were 28.11(1.64) and 26.87 (0.93) for the cases and controls, without statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). After adjusting for gender, age, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical exercise, family history of CRC and body mass index (BMI), unconditional multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the participants with the highest quintile (Q5) of whole blood lead concentration were at an increased risk of advanced CRN (odds ratio [OR] = 1.87, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] : 1.15 – 3.04) compared to those with the lowest quintile (Q1) and the increased risk was much higher for the male participants (Q5 vs. Q1: OR = 2.12, 95%CI : 1.05 – 4.30). Furthermore after base 10 logarithm conversion, each unit increment in blood lead concentration was associated with a 1.86 (OR = 2.86, 95%CI : 1.28 – 6.35) and 3.98 (OR = 4.98, 95%CI : 1.62 – 15.35) times higher risk of advanced CRN for the all and the male participants, respectively. Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed a significant linear correlation between the increment of whole blood concentration and the increased risk of advanced CRN after adjusting for potential confounders mentioned above (χ2 total = 8.79, Ptotal = 0.012; χ2 non-linearity = 2.17, Pnon-linearity = 0.141). ConclusionBlood lead concentration may be associated with an increased risk of advanced colorectal neoplasia, suggesting a potential role of lead exposure in the etiology of colorectal carcinogenesis.
Association between Dietary Zinc and Selenium Intake, Oxidative Stress-Related Gene Polymorphism, and Colorectal Cancer Risk in Chinese Population - A Case-Control Study

Abstract:Zinc and selenium may protect against colorectal cancer (CRC) progression through their anti-oxidative effects. This study examined the independent and combined effect of dietary zinc and selenium intake, and polymorphisms of the oxidative stress-related genes (superoxide dismutase 1, superoxide dismutase 2, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase) on CRC risk in a Chinese case-control study. A total of 493 cases and 498 sex and age-matched controls were randomly selected from an ongoing case-control study. Dietary information was assessed through face-to-face interviews using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Multiplex PCR-ligase detection reaction was used for genotyping the target SNPs. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Intake of selenium was found to be inversely associated with CRC risk, while zinc was not associated with CRC risk. The ORs (95% CI) for the highest vs. the lowest quartile were 0.42 (95% CI 0.28, 0.64, P trend < 0.001) for selenium and 0.96 (95% CI 0.63, 1.47, P trend = 0.505) for zinc. Combined effect was observed between zinc and SOD1 rs4998557 on CRC risk (P interaction < 0.05). This study identified a novel diet-gene interaction in the oxidative stress pathway on CRC risk in Chinese population.
Association between dietary minerals and glioma: A case-control study based on Chinese population

Abstract:BackgroundAs one of the essential nutrients for the human body, minerals participate in various physiological activities of the body and are closely related to many cancers. However, the population study on glioma is not sufficient. ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between five dietary minerals and glioma. MethodsA total of 506 adult patients with glioma and 506 healthy controls were matched 1:1 according to age (+/- 5 years) and sex. The food intake of the subjects in the past year was collected through the food frequency questionnaire, and the intakes of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper in the diet were calculated. The logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for dietary minerals to gliomas. ResultsAfter adjusting for confounders, higher intakes of calcium (OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.57-0.74), magnesium (OR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.11-0.29), iron (OR = 0.04, 95% CI: 0.02-0.11), zinc (OR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.54-0.73), and copper (OR = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.13-0.39) were associated with a significantly decreased risk of glioma. Similar results were observed in gliomas of different pathological types and pathological grades. The restriction cubic spline function suggested significant linear dose-response relationships between intakes of five minerals and the risk of glioma. When the dietary minerals exceeded a particular intake, the risk of glioma stabilized. ConclusionOur study suggests that higher dietary intakes of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper are associated with a decreased risk of glioma. However, the results of this study require further exploration of potential mechanisms in the future better to elucidate the effects of mineral intake on gliomas.

Abstract:Few studies have been conducted in low-selenium areas of China to assess the relationships between dietary intake of selenium and zinc and the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SCCE). We studied dietary mineral and trace element intake and risk of SCCE in a population-based, case-control study in Taixing, China, in 2000. A total of 218 SCCE patients and 415 population healthy controls were interviewed using a standard dietary and health questionnaire. The median and quartiles were calculated to represent the average level and distribution of selected dietary minerals and trace elements estimated by the Chinese Standard Tables of Food Composition. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles were 0.30 (95% confidence intervals, CIs = 0.13-0.67) for selenium intake and 0.28 (95% CI = 0.11-0.70) for zinc intake with obvious dose-dependent patterns (P values for trend = 0.01). The adjusted OR for the combined effect of selenium and zinc intake was 0.53 (95% CI = 0.29-0.96) after controlling for potential confounding factors, including age, gender, educational level, body mass index, and total energy intake. Our results suggested that the potential joint effect of zinc and selenium might contribute to SCCE risk. Increased dietary intake of selenium and zinc may decrease the risk of SCCE in a low-selenium area of China.

Abstract:Background: Dietary nutrient intake plays a significant role in carcinogenesis. Few studies have investigated the association between dietary nutrient intake and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) risk in China. Methods: Data on 2,304 women from an ongoing cohort comprising 40,000 women from China in 2014 were included. We randomly selected 218 out of 2304 people as subjects during 2019. All participants were surveyed through in-person interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests. Clinical data were obtained from physical examinations and laboratory tests. Dietary intakes were assessed using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Nutrition intakes from 26 food sources were calculated using a comprehensive validated database. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the frequency and proportion, and mean and standard deviation of the demographic characteristics. Characteristics were examined for significant differences, and Pearson chi-square tests were used for categoric variables. Logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) for CIN risk in each nutritional ingredient quartile relative to that in the highest quartile. Results: The food frequency questionnaire exhibited acceptable reproducibility and reasonable validity in assessing nutrient intakes among these women. After adjusting for multiple confounders, several dietary nutrients showed significant associations with CIN2+ risk. Low dietary folate intake was associated with the risk of CIN2+ (first versus fourth quartile: OR=1.55, 95% CI: 1.03-2.33). Similar results were also observed for vitamin B6 (OR=1.63, 95% CI: 1.08-2.46), vitamin C (OR=1.59, 95% CI: 1.05-2.42), niacin (OR=1.65, 95% CI: 1.08-2.51), and vitamin K (second versus fourth quartile: OR=1.60, 95% CI: 1.05-2.44). Conclusions: Low folate; vitamin B6, C, and K; and niacin intakes were associated with CIN2+ risk. Nutrients may influence the development of higher grade CIN and cervical cancer. Appraising the Role of Circulating Concentrations of Micro-Nutrients in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Risk: A Mendelian Randomization Analysis

Abstract:To determine the causality of micro-nutrients concentrations and risk of ovarian cancer using the Mendelian randomization approach. Analyses were conducted using summary statistics data for SNPs robustly associated with concentrations of thirteen micro-nutrients (iron, copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, vitamin A, β-carotene, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin E, folate). The corresponding data for ovarian cancer were obtained from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (25,509 cases and 40,941 controls). In standard Mendelian randomization analysis, the odds ratios (OR) of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer were 0.14 (95% CI, 0.03–0.70; P = 0.02) per 0.1 mmol/L (about one standard deviation, SD) increase in genetically predicted magnesium concentration, 1.04 (95% CI, 1.00–1.09; P = 0.03) per 0.3 μmol/liter (about one SD) increase in genetically predicted β-carotene concentration. The OR of low malignant potential tumours were 0.82 (95% CI, 0.76–0.90; P = 1.01 × 10−5) per 0.3 μmol/liter (about one SD) increase in β-carotene concentration, 1.42 (95% CI, 1.21–1.68; P = 3 × 10−5) per 153 pmol/L (about one SD) increase in vitamin B12 concentration, 0.21 (95% CI, 0.06–0.76; P = 0.02) per 6 mg/L (about one SD) increase in vitamin E concentration. No significant associations of other micro-nutrients and ovarian cancer were observed. This study found that an increased risk of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer was observed with a genetically higher concentration of β-carotene, whereas a decreased risk of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer was found with a higher concentration of magnesium. As for low malignant potential tumours, increased concentration of vitamin B12 could increase the risk of low malignant potential tumours, while increased concentrations of β-carotene and vitamin E could lower the risk of low malignant potential tumours.
Lower dietary mineral intake is significantly associated with cervical cancer risk in a population-based cross-sectional study

The food frequency questionnaire exhibited acceptable reproducibility and reasonable validity in assessing nutrient intakes among these women. After adjusting for multiple potential confounders, low dietary calcium intake was associated with CIN2+ risk (first versus fourth quartile: odds ratio [OR]=1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-2.32). Similar for magnesium (OR=1.80, 95% CI: 1.20-2.68), phosphorus (OR=1.69, 95% CI: 1.12-2.55), zinc (OR=1.55, 95% CI: 1.03-2.34), and potassium (OR=1.92, 95% CI: 1.28-2.88). Low dietary intakes of calcium and potassium were significantly associated with CIN1 risk. Increased CIN2+ risk correlated with rates of no oral contraceptives and lower levels of dietary Potassium. These results thus proposed that low dietary mineral intake was an independent risk factor, potential synergy may exist between low dietary mineral levels and oral contraceptives contribute to the development of higher-grade CIN and cervical cancer.

Abstract:As major nonenzymatic antioxidant components in the body, dietary Zinc (Zn) and Selenium (Se) may have an impact on breast cancer development. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary Zn, Se intake and breast cancer risk in Chinese women. The case-control study included 1591 cases and 1622 age-frequency matched controls. Dietary intake was collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Dietary Zn and Se were divided into four categories: Zn/Se from plants, Zn/Se from meat, Zn/Se from red meat, and Zn/Se from white meat. Unconditional logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed to identify potential associations. Zn from white meat intake was linearly and inversely associated with breast cancer risk, and Se from red meat intake was linearly and positively associated with breast cancer risk, with adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval of 0.76 (0.61-0.95) and 1.36 (1.04-1.77), respectively. Non-linear relationships were found between total dietary Zn, Zn from meat, Zn from red meat intake and breast cancer risk (pnon-linearity < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary Zn and Se intake were associated with breast cancer risk in Chinese women, and the optimal intake of Zn may be beneficial for breast cancer prevention.
Increased total iron and zinc intake and lower heme iron intake reduce the risk of esophageal cancer: A dose-response meta-analysis

Abstract:Several epidemiological studies investigated the relationship between dietary intake of essential trace elements and the risk of esophageal cancer (EC), yielding inconsistent results. We therefore conducted a systematic meta-analysis to investigate and quantify the putative association between the intake of various essential trace elements and the risk of EC. We searched Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science for eligible articles published through April 2018 reporting the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Pooled results were then calculated using fixed and random effect models. A total of 20 articles containing 4855 cases from 1 387 482 participants were included in our analysis. We found a significant inverse correlation between total iron intake and the risk of EC (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.70–0.94), particularly in Asian populations. A dose–response analysis revealed that each 5 mg/day increase in total iron intake was associated with a 15% reduction in EC risk (OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.79–0.92). In contrast, each 1 mg/day increase in heme iron intake was associated with a 21% increase in EC risk (OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.02–1.45). Lastly, a pooled risk estimate revealed that each 5 mg/day increase in zinc intake was associated with a 15% reduction in EC risk (OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.77–0.93). Taken together, our analysis indicates that increased dietary intake of total iron and zinc, as well as decreased heme iron intake, may be associated with a lower risk of developing esophageal cancer. These findings have important public health implications with respect to preventing this relatively common form of cancer.
Micronutrients and Risks of Three Main Urologic Cancers: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Abstract:BackgroundThe effect of micronutrients on urologic cancers has been explored in observational studies. We conducted the two-sample mendelian randomization (TSMR) study to investigate whether micronutrients could causally influence the risk of urologic cancers.MethodsSummary statistics for four micronutrients and three main urologic cancers outcomes were obtained from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). MR analyses were applied to explore the potential causal association between them. Sensitivity analyses using multiple methods were also conducted.ResultsGenetically predicted one SD increase in serum copper and iron concentrations was causally associated with increased risks of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) (OR = 3.021, 95%CI = 2.204–4.687, P < 0.001, male; OR = 2.231, 95%CI = 1.524-3.953, P < 0.001, female; OR = 1.595, 95%CI = 1.310–1.758, P = 0.0238, male; OR = 1.484, 95%CI = 1.197–2.337, P = 0.0210, female, respectively) and per SD increase in serum zinc levels was related to decreased risks of RCC (OR = 0.131, 95%CI = 0.0159–0.208, P < 0.001, male; OR = 0.124, 95%CI = 0.0434–0.356, P < 0.001, female). No significant results were observed between micronutrients and the risk of bladder cancer after Bonferroni correction. Additionally, per SD increase in serum zinc level was associated with a 5.8% higher risk of prostate cancer (PCa) [OR = 1.058, 95%CI = 1.002–1.116, P = 0.0403, inverse-variance weight (IVW)].ConclusionsMicronutrients play a vital role in the development of urological tumors. Future studies are required to replicate the findings, explore the underlying mechanisms, and examine the preventive or therapeutic role of micronutrients in clinical settings.
Modification Role of Dietary Antioxidants in the Association of High Red Meat Intake and Lung Cancer Risk: Evidence from a Cancer Screening Trial

Abstract:Evidence on the association between red meat consumption and lung cancer risk is weak. This study examined the associations between red meat and lung cancer across levels of antioxidant intake from foods or supplements. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to assess hazard ratios (HRs) for lung cancer incidence in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial. Baseline food frequency questionnaires measured red meat and antioxidant intake. The food-based Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (fCDAI) evaluated the overall natural intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. During 13 years of follow-up, 95,647 participants developed 1599 lung cancer cases. Higher red meat consumption was associated with a higher risk of lung cancer (HRQ4vsQ1 1.43, 95%CI 1.20-1.71, p-trend < 0.001). We observed similar trends across groups with low or medium levels of antioxidant intake. However, no association was noticed in the group with the highest fCDAI (HRQ4vsQ1 1.24, 95%CI 0.90-1.72, p-trend = 0.08) and highest independent natural antioxidant intake. The attenuated risk was not consistently observed among groups with high supplement use. Lastly, we did not notice evidence of interactions between red meat and antioxidant intake. Our findings emphasize the importance of limiting red meat in lung cancer prevention.
Serum Copper and Zinc Levels and Colorectal Cancer in Adults: Findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination 2011–2016

Abstract:Several studies have indicated an association between serum copper and zinc levels and colorectal cancer, but results were controversial. This study assessed the association of serum copper, zinc, and copper/zinc ratio with colorectal cancer in US adults aged 20 years and older through the use of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2016 data. Serum concentrations of copper and zinc were measured using inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry (ICP-DRC-MS). Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (ORs with CIs) were calculated for serum copper, zinc, and copper/zinc ratio by multivariate logistic regression. A total of 4663 participants (2320 males and 2343 females) with 24 colorectal cancer patients were included in the analyses. We did not observe a statistically significant association between serum copper level and colorectal cancer (top vs bottom quartile multivariate OR 1.71; 95% CI, 0.37–7.88; P for trend = 0.429). In addition, serum zinc level was also not significantly associated with colorectal cancer (top vs bottom quartile multivariate OR 0.72; 95% CI, 0.12–4.27; P for trend = 0.346). While in the age- and gender-adjusted model, there seemed to be a trend that participants with higher copper/zinc ratio level had higher odds of colorectal cancer than participants with lower copper/zinc ratio level; no statistically significant association was observed in multivariate-adjusted models. Our findings did not support a significant association between serum copper and zinc level and colorectal cancer risk in the general US population. Furthermore, large longitudinal studies should be needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract:Background: Both genetic and dietary factors play significant roles in the etiology of colorectal cancer (CRC). To evaluate the relationship between certain food exposures and the risk of CRC, we carried out a large-scale association analysis in the UK Biobank. Methods: The associations of 139 foods and nutrients' intake with CRC risk were assessed among 118,210 participants. A polygenic risk score (PRS) of CRC was created to explore any interaction between dietary factors and genetic susceptibility in CRC risk. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of CRC risk linked to dietary variables and PRS were estimated using Cox regression models. Multiple comparisons were corrected using the error discovery rate (FDR). Results: During a mean follow-up of 12.8 years, 1466 incidents of CRC were identified. In the UK Biobank, alcohol and white bread were associated with increased CRC risk, and their HRs were 1.08 (95% CI: 1.03–1.14; FDRP = 0.028) and 1.10 (95% CI: 1.05–1.16; FDRP = 0.003), whereas dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese intakes were inversely associated. We found no evidence of any PRS–nutrient interaction relationship in relation to CRC risk. Conclusions: Our results show that higher intakes of alcohol and white bread are associated with increased CRC risk, whilst dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese are inversely associated.

Association Between Vitamin Intake and Colorectal Cancer: Evidence from NHANES Data

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to investigate the associations between vitamins and colorectal cancer (CRC) based on a national sample of US adults. Methods: A total of 6200 samples were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to explore the relationship between vitamins (specifically, A, C, and D) and CRC. Logistic regression models were employed to assess the associations between dietary vitamin intake and CRC. Results: Our findings indicate a negative association between vitamin C intake and CRC. However, the associations of vitamin A and vitamin D with CRC were not statistically significant. For vitamin C, compared to the first tertile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 0.91 (0.76-0.97) for the second tertile and 0.81 (0.64-0.95) for the third tertile (P < 0.01). Conversely, for vitamin A, compared to the first tertile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 1.02 (0.82-1.22) for the second tertile and 1.04 (0.75-1.25) for the third tertile (P < 0.01). For vitamin D, compared to the first tertile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 0.96 (0.84-1.06) for the second tertile and 1.01 (0.83-1.15) for the third tertile (P < 0.01). Additionally, the negative association between vitamin C and CRC was more pronounced among females (0.76, 0.67-0.92), individuals aged 60 and above (0.75, 0.69-0.95), and those with a BMI > 30 (0.78, 0.67-0.93). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that higher vitamin C intake is associated with a reduced prevalence of CRC. However, further large-scale prospective cohort studies are warranted to validate our results.

Abstract:Background: Previous studies have related circulating levels of trace metal elements, of which dietary intake is the major source, to cognitive outcomes. However, there are still relatively few studies evaluating the associations of dietary intake levels of iron, copper, zinc, and manganese with cognitive function (CF). Methods: We leveraged the data of 6863 participants (mean [standard deviation] age = 66.7 [10.5] years) in the Health and Retirement Study (2013/2014). Dietary intake levels of iron, copper, zinc, and manganese were calculated from a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. CF was assessed using the 27-point modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS). We used linear regression models to calculate the mean differences in global CF scores by quintiles of dietary intake levels of trace metal elements. Results: Among the study participants, the mean (SD) values of daily dietary intake were 13.3 (6.3) mg for iron, 1.4 (0.7) mg for copper, 10.7 (4.6) mg for zinc, and 3.3 (1.6) mg for manganese. Compared with the lowest quintile of dietary iron intake (<8.1 mg), the highest quintile (≥17.7 mg) was associated with a lower cognitive score (−0.50, −0.94 to −0.06, P-trend = 0.007). Higher dietary copper was significantly associated with poorer CF (P-trend = 0.002), and the mean difference in cognitive score between extreme quintiles (≥1.8 vs. <0.8 mg) was −0.52 (95% confidence interval: −0.94 to −0.10) points. We did not observe significant associations for dietary intake of zinc (P-trend = 0.785) and manganese (P-trend = 0.368). Conclusion: In this cross-sectional study, higher dietary intake of iron and copper was related to worse CF, but zinc and manganese intake levels were not significantly associated with CF.

Abstract:Prostate cancer is affecting males globally, with several complications. Zinc can play roles in cancers. We aimed to clarify the association between zinc levels or intake with prostate cancer development. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science until May 1, 2023. We included case-controls and cross-sectionals that measured zinc level and/or intake in patients with prostate cancer or cohorts that evaluated the association between zinc and prostate cancer development. Studies that did not have a healthy control group were excluded. Joanna Briggs Institute was used for quality assessment. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger's and Begg's tests and funnel plot. Overall, 52 studies (n = 44 case controls, n = 4 cohorts, and n = 4 cross sectionals) with a total number of 163909 participants were included. Serum (standardized mean difference (SMD): -1.11; 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.67, -0.56), hair (SMD: -1.31; 95% CI: -2.19, -0.44), and prostatic fluid or tissue zinc levels (SMD: -3.70; 95% CI: -4.90, -2.49) were significantly lower in prostate cancer patients. There were no significant differences in nail zinc level and zinc intake between those with prostate cancer and healthy controls. There was no publication bias except for serum and hair zinc levels based on Begg's and Egger's tests, respectively. The mean risk of bias scores were 4.61 in case-controls, eight in cohorts, and seven in cross-sectionals. Overall, high zinc levels might have a protective role in prostate cancer, which can be used as a therapeutic or preventive intervention. Future large-scale studies are needed to confirm the association.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have reported that dietary mineral intake plays an important role on lung cancer risk, but the association of sodium, potassium intake is still unclear.METHODS: We determined the association between dietary sodium, potassium intake and lung cancer risk based on the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial and the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). Totally 165,409 participants who completed the baseline questionnaire (BQ) and diet history questionnaire (DHQ) were included into the analytical dataset, including 92,984 (44,959 men and 48,025 women) from the PLCO trial and 72,425 (women only) from the WHI cohort. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident lung cancer associated with dietary potassium and sodium intake. The dose-response relationship was also described using the spline smoothed curve after adjusting covariates.RESULTS: After the median follow-up of 8.55 and 18.56 years, 1,278 and 1,631 new cases of lung cancer were identified in the PLCO trial and WHI cohort, respectively. Intake of sodium was significantly associated with the incidence of lung cancer in the PLCO trial after multivariate adjustment for men (HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.05-1.35; P for linear trend =0.044). There was a suggestion that lung cancer risk had a quadratic curve correlation with the increase of potassium intake for women (third vs. lowest quintile: HR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.54-0.96; P for quadratic trend =0.042). The similar results showing an inverse association between potassium intake and lung cancer risk were also observed in the WHI cohort for women (highest vs. lowest quintile: HR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70-0.97; P for linear trend =0.009).CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate intake of potassium has a protective effect against lung cancer, while high consumption of sodium is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.

Abstract:Background: Sulfur microbial diet (SMD), related to the enrichment of sulfur-metabolizing gut bacteria, has been confirmed to be linked to an elevated risk of early-onset colorectal adenoma in young females. However, it remains unclear whether SMD is associated with the risk of colorectal adenoma in older people, who are at greater risk for colorectal cancer. Methods: All data on participants in this study were retrieved from the intervention arm of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening test. Participants' adherence to this dietary pattern was assessed using SMD score. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were adopted in Cox proportional hazards regression models to assess the link between SMD score and the incidence of colorectal adenoma in participants included in the study. Specific stratified analyses were constructed to assess whether this association changed in different conditions, whereas the robustness of the association was examined through sensitivity analyses. Results: The mean baseline age of participants was 62.1 (SD 5.2) years (range 54.0-75.0 years). During 19,468,589 person-years of follow-up, 992 colorectal adenoma cases were documented in a total of 17,627 included participants. In a fully adjusted model, an increased risk of colorectal adenoma was determined in participants in the highest quartile of SMD score in comparison with those in the lowest quartile (HRquartile4 vs. HRquartile1 = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.47; p = 0.017 for trend). This positive association between SMD score and adenoma risk was more evident in participants who were current or former smokers (p = 0.029 for interaction). Conclusion: In this study, our results support a role for the SMD in the carcinogenicity of colorectal cancer precursors among older adults. Nevertheless, these results require validation through more research.
