Abstract:Substrate clogging is regarded as one of the main influencing factors on the sustainable operation in subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSFCWs). The accumulation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by microbial metabolism may contribute to the substrate clogging due to the increasing formation of biofilms in CWs. In this study, the quantity and composition of EPS, and the distribution and variation of bacterial communities in different CW systems with and without aeration and biochar addition were comparatively investigated. Biochar and intermittent aeration addition could shift the production and compositions of EPS in SSFCW. Higher total EPS production was observed in CW with intermittent aeration and biochar (328 mg L−1), compared with control (241 mg L−1), CW with biochar addition (154 mg L−1) and CW with intermittent aeration (285 mg L−1). In addition, biochar addition could decrease the content of soluble EPS (S-EPS), and combination of biochar and aeration could increase the content of tightly B-EPS (TB-EPS). Four fluorescent components were identified in EPS samples by parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. The fluorescence intensity of tryptophan-like substance was maximum, followed by tyrosine-like substance and humic acid-like substance. The application of intermittent aeration and biochar improved the abundance of microbes but decreased the diversity of microbes. Moreover, higher relative abundance of some functional bacteria correlated with the nitrogen removal was found in biochar added intermittently aerated SSFCW. The obtained results revealed that intermittent aeration and biochar addition could enhance treatment performance, but might have a potential risk of substrate clogging in SSFCWs.

Abstract:Four subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs) filled with different substrates including ceramsite, ceramsite+pyrite, ceramsite+ferrous sulfide, and ceramsite+pyrite+ferrous sulfide (labeled as SFCW-S1, SFCW-S2, SFCW-S3, and SFCW-S4) were constructed, and the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by these SFCWs coupled with intermittent aeration in the front section was discussed. The key findings from different substrate analyses, including nitrification and denitrification rate, enzyme activity, microbial community structure, and the X-ray diffraction, revealed the nitrogen and phosphorus removal mechanism. The results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency for SFCW-S1 always remained the lowest, and the phosphorus removal efficiency for SFCW-S4 was recorded as the highest one. However, after controlling the dissolved oxygen by intermittent aeration in the front section of SFCWs, the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies of SFCWs-S2 and S4 became higher than those of SFCW-S1, and SFCW-S3. It was noticed that the pollutants were removed mainly in the front section of the SFCWs. Both precipitation and adsorption on the substrate were the main mechanisms for phosphorus removal. A minute difference of nitrification rate and ammonia monooxygenase activity was observed in the SFCWs’ aeration zone. The denitrification rates, nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, and electron transport system activity for SFCW-S2 and SFCW-S4 were higher than those detected for SFCW-S1 and SFCW-S3 in the non-aerated zone. Proteobacteria was the largest phyla found in the SFCWs. Moreover, Thiobacillus occupied a large proportion found in SFCW-S2, and SFCW-S4, and it played a crucial role in pyrite-driven autotrophic denitrification.

Abstract:In this study, a novel sludge-ceramsite was applied as main substrate in intermittent-aerated subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSF CWs) for treating decentralized domestic wastewater, and intensified organics and nitrogen removal in different SSF CWs (with and without intermittent aeration, with and without sludge-ceramsite substrate) were evaluated. High removal of 97.2% COD, 98.9% NH4(+)-N and 85.8% TN were obtained simultaneously in the intermittent-aerated CW system using sludge-ceramsite substrate compared with non-aerated CWs. Moreover, results from fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis revealed that the growth of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in the intermittent-aerated CW system with sludge-ceramsite substrate was enhanced, thus indicating that the application of intermittent aeration and sludge-ceramsite plays an important role in nitrogen transformations. These results suggest that a combination of intermittent aeration and sludge-ceramsite substrate is reliable to enhance the treatment performance in SSF CWs.

Abstract:The effect of nitrogen deficiency on activated sludge bulking was studied specially in some experiments carried on a sequencing batch reactor fed with beer wastewater in this paper. The experimental results showed that the sludge settled properly at a influent BOD/N value of 100/4. When the value of BOD/N was 100/3 and 100/2 respectively, non-filamentous activated sludge bulking caused by an excessive growth of viscous Zoogloea with high moisture content occurred. When the value of influent BOD/N was 100/0.94, more serious non-filamentous bulking occurred. Furthermore, the effect of nitrogen deficiency on the nitrogen sources and phosphorus sources utilization rate and the COD removal rate was studied in the experiments.

Abstract:Removing phosphorus and endocrine-disruptors (EDC) is still challenging for low-cost sewage treatment systems. This study investigated the efficiency of three vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) vegetated with Eichhornia crassipes onto red clay (CW-RC), autoclaved aerated concrete (CW-AC), and composite from the chemical activation of autoclaved aerated concrete with white cement (CW-AAC) in the removal of organic matter, nutrients, and estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol. The novelty aspect of this study is related to selecting these clay and cementitious-based materials in removing endocrine disruptors and nutrients in VFCW. The subsurface VFCW were operated in sequencing-batch mode (cycles of 48-48-72 h), treating synthetic wastewater for 308 days. The operation consisted of Stages I and II, different by adding EDC in Stage II. The presence of EDC increased the competition for dissolved oxygen (DO) and reduced the active sites available for adsorption, diminishing the removal efficiencies of TKN and TAN and total phosphorus in the systems. CW-RC showed a significant increase in COD removal from 65% to 91%, while CW-AC and CW-AAC maintained stable COD removal (84%-82% and 78%-81%, respectively). Overall, the substrates proved effective in removing EDC, with CW-AC and CW-AAC achieving >60% of removal. Bacteria Candidatus Brocadia and Candidatus Jettenia, responsible for carrying out the Anammox process, were identified in assessing the microbial community structure. According to the mass balance analysis, adsorption is the main mechanism for removing TP in CW-AC and CW-AAC, while other losses were predominant in CW-RC. Conversely, for TN removal, the adsorption is more representative in CW-RC, and the different metabolic routes of microorganisms, biofilm assimilation, and partial ammonia volatilization in CW-AC and CW-AAC. The results suggest that the composite AAC is the most suitable material for enhancing the simultaneous removal of organic matter, nutrients, and EDC in VFCW under the evaluated operational conditions.
Dairy wastewater treatment in vertical flow constructed wetlands using a mixture of perlite and sponge carriers as substrate material

Abstract:The substrate is a critical component of constructed wetlands (CWs) for efficient removal of pollutants from wastewater, while the most used are gravel and sand mainly due to their relatively low cost. However, these materials sometimes fail to treat heavily polluted wastewater because of low sorption capacity and low specific surface area. The goal of this study was the investigation of an alternative substrate contained perlite and sponge biocarriers for dairy wastewater treatment in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs). The experiment was carried out at the outdoor research facility of the University of the Aegean in Mytilene, Greece. Two VFCWs were constructed using modified cylindrical plastic The VFCWs were filled with two layers of materials: a drainage layer (15 cm) filled with coarse gravel (20-40 mm) and a filter layer (60 cm) filled a) with fine gravel (named VFCW1) or b) with a mixture of perlite and sponge cubic form carriers (named VFCW2). The halophytic plant Atriplex halimus was used as wetlands vegetation in both cases. Results shown that the use of perlite and sponge carriers significantly improved the overall removal performance of VFCWs in comparison with fine gravel. The average COD concentration in the effluents of VFCW1 and VFCW2 was found 352.0 and 173.6 mg/L, respectively. Similar, the average turbidity removal in the system filled with perlite and sponge carriers was found 96 % while the average turbidity removal in the system filled with fine gravel was found 79 %.

Pollutant purification performance of a surface flow constructed wetland planted with different aquatic macrophytes and their combination

Abstract:The pollutant purification performance of a surface flow constructed wetland(SFCW)planted with different aquatic macrophytes,i.e.submerged(Vallisneria spiralis),floating(Eichhornia crassipes)and emergent(Phragmites australis)aquatic macrophytes,was investigated with non-vegetated SFCW as control.Subsequently,in-situ purification of eutrophication river water was investigated by a demonstration project of multi-stage SFCW(aerobic pond-Eichhornia crassipes wetland-Vallisneria spiralis wetland).In batch cultures,the evapotranspirations in Phragmites australis,Eichhornia crassipes and Vallisneria spiralis system were 150%,80% and 30% of that in the control system.The introduction of different aquatic macrophytes into the SFCW significantly improved the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand(CODCr)and total nitrogen(TN).Eichhornia crassipes system had the highest CODCr and TN removal efficiencies,58.91%and 76.67%,respectively,at initial concentrations of CODCr and TN of 35.8 and 6.86 mg·L-1,respectively.The application of Vallisneria spiralis significantly increased the accumulation of oxidized nitrogen(NO-x-N)in the waterbody.Moreover,a demonstration project of the multi-stage SFCW achieved better CODCr removal efficiency at a hydraulic load of 6.2 cm·d-1 that deteriorated at a higher hydraulic load.

Abstract:Improving the adsorption performance of wetland fillers is of great significance for enhancing pollutant removal in constructed wetlands. Currently, limited by complex preparation processes and high costs, large numbers of high adsorption fillers studied in lab are difficult to be applied in practical engineering. In this study, a newly low-cost and efficient phosphorus removal composite wetland filler (CFB) is prepared by using industrial and agriculture waste (steel slag and oyster shells) and natural ore (volcanic rock) as raw materials. The results show that phosphorus removal efficiency was largely enhanced by synergistic effects of steel slag, oyster shells, and volcanic rock, and it was mainly influenced by the proportion of each component of CFB. Based on the fitting of the classical isothermal equation, the adsorption capacity of CFB is 18.339 mg/g. The adsorption of phosphorus by CFB is endothermic and spontaneous, and there are heterogeneous surfaces and multi-layer adsorption processes, as well as pH value and temperature, are free from the influence on CFB phosphorus removal. During the practical wastewater application experiments, the phosphorus removal rate of the CFB-filled constructed wetland apparatus (CW-A) can reach 94.89% and is free from the influence on the removal of other pollutants (COD, TN, and NH 3 -N) by the system. Overall, the prepared CFB is of excellent decontamination effect, an extremely simple preparation process, low cost, and sound practical engineering application potential, providing new ideas and approaches for enhancing the phosphorus removal capacity and waste resource utilization of constructed wetland systems.

Abstract:The urgent need to achieve sustainable development goals and address global climate change calls for innovative solutions in advanced low-carbon water treatment technologies. In this study, constructed wetlands (CWs), a sustainable and multifunctional wastewater treatment technology known for its low cost and energy efficiency, was focused. It was presented a novel approach that employs a sulfur-siderite composite filler in the constructed wetland (SSCF-CW), which demonstrated remarkable removal efficiencies for total phosphorus (TP) ranging from 81.14 % to 98.87 %, nitrate nitrogen (NO3 −-N) ranging from 85.23 % to 99.82 %, and total nitrogen (TN) ranging from 91.65 % to 97.01 % in low C/N wastewater treatment. The electron resupply mode of the sulfur and iron cycles plays a pivotal role in enhancing denitrification efficiency. Furthermore, SSCF enhances the resilience of SSCF-CW against shock loadings, providing increased stability and performance with TN removal rate of 2.96 ∼ 3.42 g N·m−3·d−1 while HRT decreased from 48 h to 10 h. Notably, the majority of NO3 −-N elimination occurs within the SSCF layer, where Thiobacillus species dominate the denitrification process in SSCF-CW. The introduction of SSCF promotes carbon fixation with the higher relative abundance of DLD gene (5.52 %) in SSCF-CW, benefiting microbial growth and accelerating electron transfer process. Co-precipitation and adsorption pathways in the SSCF layer primarily contribute to TP removal, while iron leaching from SSCF facilitates the formation of iron plaque on roots, establishing an iron reservoir and ensuring bioavailability. These findings highlight the significant potential of SSCF in constructed wetland systems, offering a cost-effective and sustainable low-carbon technology for municipal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:AbstractCost-effective and environmental-friendly substrates are essential for the constructed wetlands (CWs). In this study, the column test was used to explore the differences in pollutant purification performance, microbial community structure and abundance between non-burning compound filler and conventional CWs substrates (i.e. gravel and ceramsite) at low temperature (0–15℃). It was found that the maximum phosphorus removal efficiency of compound filler (99%) was better than gravel (18%) and ceramsite (21%). Besides, the proportion of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria capable of ammonium oxidation, nitrification and denitrification (i.e. Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Acetoanaerobium) was enhanced by compound filler, which has an excellent potential for nitrogen removal in the subsequent purification process. These results demonstrated that the self-made non-burning compound filler was a potential substrate for CWs, which was of great significance for the resource utilization of solid wastes such as polyaluminum chloride residue.

Abstract:Due to its limited dissolved oxygen concentration, constructed wetland (CW) could not remove nutrients and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) effectively. Therefore, in this study, a siphon was applied in CW (Si-CW) to create tidal flow to achieve efficient removal of nutrients and B[a]P, and the removal mechanism was explored. The results showed that the NH4+ and TP removal values for the Si-CW were 55.95% ± 7.75% and 20.79% ± 8.39%, which exceeded those for the conventional CW (CCW). Alternative anaerobic and aerobic environments formed by siphon also enabled magnetite in Si-CW to form the iron cycle (Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle), which promoted the occurrence of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and hydrogen-utilizing autotrophic denitrification and improved nitrogen removal significantly. The mass balance showed that microbial degradation was the main mechanism of B[a]P removal (39.0% – 54.0%). Si-CW possessed better oxygen conditions and iron cycles, favoring the propagation and growth of B[a]P-degrading bacteria (i.e., Pseudoxanthomonas) while enhancing the proportion of microbial degradation of B[a]P. Metagenomic analysis indicated that Si-CW had a higher TC.FEV.OM gene expression of Pseudoxanthomonas, which could regulate the siderophores produced by Pseudoxanthomonas through the metabolic pathway (K02014) of the iron complex outer-membrane receptor protein to achieve efficient B[a]P removal.

The two case studies indicated that the contents of clogging matter in the two subsurface flow constructed wetlands varied greatly due to the operation time and operation mode, and the proportion of inorganic components was higher than that of organic components. The organic components of the clogging matter were mainly proteins and humic acids, with very small amounts of polysaccharides and nucleic acids. In addition, the H2O2 solution with a mass fraction of 10% had a good removal effect on proteins and humic acids in the wetland substrates, which also could increase the permeability coefficient of the substrates without causing a large negative impact on the temperature and pH value of the wetland systems. This article proposed a simple, economical, environmentally friendly method for analyzing and remediating biological clogging of subsurface flow constructed wetlands, which was expected to be widely used in situ remediation of clogging matter.

Abstract:The application of constructed wetlands (CWs) in organic micropollutants elimination is receiving increasing attention worldwide. However, acclimatization periods of CWs were long due to uncontrollable biotic factors and external conditions. In this study, manganese oxide was applied to enhance the simultaneous removal of nutrients and diclofenac (DFC) in CWs. To evaluate the treatment performance, two vertical up-flow CWs (VFCWs), with/without (experimental/ control) birnessite-coated sand VFCW, were set up to treat synthetic secondary effluent of the wastewater treatment plant. The removal performance of ammonia was significantly higher in experimental VFCW than that of control during the first 80 d, indicating that experimental VFCW could maintain a stable NH4 +-N treatment performance (over 60%) when wastewater contained DFC. After 200 d of operation, the removal efficiency of DFC was achieved 98.5% in experimental VFCWs. The application of birnessite sand increased 12.8% of nitrogen load in the substrate, while phosphorus removal performance was enhanced by 10.0% on account of plant uptake. Though the final nutrients treatment performance was equivalent in experimental and control VFCWs, micro-environments at the middle layer were diverse for microbial communities. This work presents birnessite sand as the potential substrate of VFCWs for treating DFC as well as nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants.

Abstract:The three-stage series subsurface flow constructed wetland(SFCW)was established with gravel,slag and zeolite as the graded substrates.The effect of aeration location and aeration quantity on pollutant removal efficiency was investigated,and the optimal aeration conditions were obtained through dualistic variance analysis.Aeration position was located in bottom,middle,surface of matrix,and the air-water ratio of SFCW was designed as 3∶1,6∶1,9∶1for adjusting the aeration quantity.Results showed that the COD and NH3-N removal efficiency of SFCW was greatly improved after aeration.The COD removal rate was increased from 5.42% to 23.04% and NH3-N removal rate increased from 7.80%to 23.79%,but for PO34-P,the removal rate was obviously decreased,from 24.32% to 9.76%.When the aeration located at bottom of wetland and air-water ratio was 6∶1,the three-stage series SFCW presented the best water purification efficiency,with the NH3-N,COD and PO34-P removal rate were 21.21%,23.04%,13.54%respectively.NH3-N and COD were significantly affected by interactions of aeration locations and aeration quantity,while the interaction effect on PO34-P was insignificant.

In addition, the H2O2 solution with a mass fraction of 10% had a good removal effect on proteins and humic acids in the wetland substrates, which also could increase the permeability coefficient of the substrates without causing a large negative impact on the temperature and pH value of the wetland systems. This article proposed a simple, economical, environmentally friendly method for analyzing and remediating biological clogging of subsurface flow constructed wetlands, which was expected to be widely used in situ remediation of clogging matter.
Enhanced phosphorus removal in intermittently aerated constructed wetlands filled with various construction wastes

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) loss by various pathways in constructed wetlands (CWs) is often variable. The effects of intermittent aeration and different construction waste substrates (gravel, red brick, fly-ash brick) on P processing using six batch-operated vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) were studied for decentralized domestic wastewater treatment. Average removal of total phosphorus (TP) in three aerated CWs was markedly higher (21.06, 24.83, and 27.02 mg m−2 day−1, respectively) than non-aerated CWs (10.64, 18.16, and 25.09 mg m−2 day−1, respectively). Fly-ash brick offered superior TP removal efficiency in both aerated and non-aerated batch-operated VFCWs, suggesting its promising application for P removal in CWs. Aeration greatly promoted plant growth and thusly increased plant uptake of P by 0.57–1.45 times. Substance storage was still the main P sink accounting for 23.92–59.47% of TP removal. Other process including microbial uptake was revealed to be a very important P removal pathway (accounting for 14.86–34.84%). The contribution of microbial uptake was also indicated by microbial analysis. Long-term results suggested that the contribution of microbial P uptake could be always ignored and underestimated in most CWs. A combination of intermittent aeration and suitable substrates is effective to intensify P transformation in CWs.

Nutrient Removal Process and Cathodic Microbial Community Composition in Integrated Vertical-Flow Constructed Wetland – Microbial Fuel Cells Filled With Different Substrates

Abstract:An integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell system (CW-MFC), consisting of an up-flow chamber and a down-flow chamber, was constructed to treat synthetic sewage wastewater. The performance of CW-MFCs filled with different substrates [i.e., ceramsite (CM-A), quartz (CM-B), and zeolite (CM-C) granules] under various hydraulic retention times (HRTs, 7.6, 4.0, and 2.8 d) was evaluated. Efficient and stable nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removals were observed in CM-A under different HRTs, while the voltage outputs of the CW-MFCs was greatly reduced as the HRTs decreased. With an HRT of 2.8 d, the ammonium (NH4+-N) and orthophosphate (PO43–-P) removal efficiencies in CM-A were as high as 93.8 and 99.6%, respectively. Bacterial community analysis indicates that the N removal in the cathode area of CM-A could potentially benefit from the appearance of nitrifying bacteria (e.g., Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira) and relatively high abundance of denitrifiers involved in simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (e.g., Hydrogenophaga, Zoogloea, and Dechloromonas) and denitrifying sulfide removal (e.g., Thauera). Additionally, the difference in N removal efficiency among the CW-MFCs could be partly explained by higher iron (Fe) content in milled ceramsite granules and higher abundance of denitrifiers with nitrate reduction and ferrous ions oxidation capabilities in CM-A compared with that in CM-B and CM-C. Efficient PO43–-P removal in CM-A was mainly ascribed to substrate adsorption and denitrifying phosphorus (P) removal. Concerning the substantial purification performance in CM-A, ceramsite granules could be used to improve the nutrient removal efficiency in integrated vertical-flow CW-MFC.

Abstract:Nutrient removal in constructed wetland (CW) microcosms planted with Phragmites and inoculated with microporous polyurethane immobilized with denitrifying bacteria was evaluated as a possible treatment for campus sewage. Constructed wetlands microcoms (CWMs) inoculated with bacterial suspension (S2) or bacteria immobilized on microporous polyurethane (S3) showed significant improvements in COD, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiency compared with S1 CWMs without bacteria. Microporous polyurethane immobilized denitrifying bacteria (S3 CWMs) had a lasting effects of pollutants removal. The removal efficiency of S3 was 75% for chemical oxygen demand (CODcr), 69% for total nitrogen (TN), 75% for ammonia-N (NH4+-N) and 78% for total phosphorus (TP). The removal of NO3--N reached up to 91%. The effulent concentration of TN, TP, NH4+-N and CODcr achieved the GB/T18921-2002 standard (China) or the GB18918-2002 standard (China) for Class I-A criteria in 5 days. Characteristics of bacteria on microporous polyurethane and immobilization methods of bacteria will be investigated in our later research. The CWs would be a cost-effective measure for pullutants removal of sewage by means of bioaugmentation.
