Abstract:ObjectivesMicroorganisms in untreated or overlooked root canals can cause endodontic failure or infection and inflammation. Therefore, clinicians should familiarize themselves with patient’s root canal anatomy and morphology. The objective of this retrospective study was to analyze and characterize mandibular root canal morphology using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a Turkish Cypriot population.Materials and methodsThis cross-sectional study consisted of retrospective evaluation of CBCT scans from 272 adult patients (aged 16–80 years). The number of roots and canals and the canal configuration in each root were evaluated using Vertucci’s classification. The incidence of additional roots and of C-shaped canals in the mandibular first and second molars was also noted. Pearson chi-square tests were performed to analyze canal configurations, laterality, and gender (p ≤ 0.05).ResultsFor the female and male patients, 94.5 and 94.4 % of the mandibular first and 96.7 and 97.2 % of the mandibular second molars had two roots, respectively. In females, 4.4 % of mandibular first molars had three roots versus 2.7 % of mandibular first molars in male patients. Type IV was the most prevalent canal configuration regardless of the gender (female 61.3 % and male 64.2 %) in the mesial roots. No statistically significant differences according to gender or laterality were found in the incidence of additional canals for either maxillary first or second molars.ConclusionsType IV was the most prevalent canal configuration of both the mandibular first and second molar teeth. There was a low prevalence of three-rooted mandibular molars in this particular population.Clinical relevanceThe current study is the first of its kind to include a Turkish Cypriot population and, thus, provides baseline data for these patients regarding appropriate root canal treatments.

The preovulatory follicular fluid in the human: influence of hormonal pretreatment (clomiphene-hCG) on some biochemical and biophysical variables.

Abstract:Some biochemical and biophysical variables of human follicular fluid have been studied both in normal women after the LH peak (preovulatory follicles) and in women treated with clomiphene and hCG (clomiphene treated follicles). The results showed that lactate and glucose levels are different from those found in serum but are not influenced by the clomiphene treatments. Osmolarity and enzymatic contents are neither different from those of serum nor modified by the hormonal treatments. The transfer of water across the follicle wall was found to be closely regulated because only slight variations were observed in the wide range of volumes collected in the samples examined.
In-depth morphological evaluation of tooth anatomic lengths with root canal configurations using cone beam computed tomography in North American population

Methodology In this retrospective study, tooth anatomic lengths (crown and root lengths, buccolingual and mesiodistal dimensions) of 384 patients were assessed and correlated with Vertucci's root canal morphology classification. Data was analyzed for gender-related differences using the independent sample t-test, ANOVA, and the Pearson's correlation for a possible relation between anatomic lengths and canal morphology. Results The maxillary first and second premolars showed a greater predilection for Type IV and II variants, respectively, while the mandibular first premolar showed a greater predilection for Type II canal system. The root canal system of the mandibular second premolar showed maximal diversity (47% Type I, 30% Type II, and 20% Type III). The dimensions were greater in men regardless of tooth type. The most significant relation (p<0.05) between the anatomic size and canal morphology was observed in the maxillary first premolars, followed by the mandibular canines (buccolingual dimension) and the lower second premolars (crown length). Negative correlations existed between the crown length and the patient's age for the anterior teeth and mandibular second premolar (r=−0.2, p<0.01). Conclusions The most common canal formation for anterior teeth was the Type I. The anatomic lengths had the strongest influence on the canal configuration of the maxillary first premolar, with Type IV being the most common root canal system. The mandibular second premolars showed maximal diversity in the canal classification terms and had a significant correlation with their crown lengths. Clinical Relevance The complex relationship between the canal morphology and anatomic tooth sizes need meticulous awareness and recognition during endodontic procedures, in conjunction with the demographic variabilities.

Abstract:The goal of this retrospective research was to assess the root and root canal morphology of mandibular premolars in the Egyptian population using cone-beam computed tomography. 300 CBCT scans were surveyed and the anatomy of 306 mandibular first and 288 second premolars was evaluated. The prevalence of the number of roots, root canals, canal morphologies according to the Vertucci classification and C-shaped canals was calculated and statistically assessed. Regarding the first and second mandibular premolars, the majority showed 1 root (95.4% and 98.6%, respectively) with 1 canal (84.6% and 97.9%). Most of the mandibular first (62.4%) and second premolars (96.2%) showed (type I) root canal morphology, followed by type V (27.1% and 2.1%) in the first and second premolars, respectively. A C-shaped root canal configuration was only detected in one mandibular second premolar (0.3%). Additional root canals and variations in root canal morphology should be considered when treating mandibular premolars to avoid failures.

Abstract:Aim: The present study was to investigate the root canal morphology of mandibular premolars in Malaysian population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) scanned images.Materials and Methods: Sixty selected mandibular premolars were evaluated in vitro and the root canal morphologies of the samples were categorized based on Vertucci's classification. The position of apical foramen, presence, and location of lateral canal, as well as prevalence of apical delta, were also determined.Results: Invariably, Type I variety (Vertucci's classification) was the most frequent root canal morphology followed by Type V and Type III after micro-CT imaging. CBCT investigation also revealed Type I as the most numerous; however, the second most common configuration was Type III followed closely by others. There was a moderate agreement in Vertucci's classification of root canal configuration and also prevalence of apical delta (kappa: 0.516 and 0.550, respectively). However, only a fair agreement (kappa: 0.289) was observed between CBCT and micro-CT on the prevalence of lateral canal.Conclusion: CBCT should be cautiously used in determining root canal configuration as deficiencies were evident and revealed during micro-CT imaging.
Cone-beam computed tomography assessment of the root canal morphology of primary molars

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to assess the root canal morphology of primary molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 60 maxillary and mandibular primary first and second molars on CBCT scans of patients retrieved from the archives of Hamadan School of Dentistry between 2018-2020. The teeth were evaluated regarding the number of roots and canals, canal type according to the Vertucci's classification, and root surface concavities. Data were analyzed descriptively and by independent t-test. Results: The most frequent number of canals and roots in the maxillary right and left first molars was 3 canals (60%) and 3 roots (80%). These values were 4 canals (80%) and 5 canals (50%) with 3 roots in the maxillary right and left second molars, respectively, 4 canals (100%) and 2 roots (50%), and 3 canals (60%) and 2 roots (50%) in mandibular right and left first molars, respectively, and 4 canals (92.3%) and 3 roots (61.5%) in mandibular right and left second molars. Vertucci's type IV was the most common canal type in mesial and distal canals, type I was the most common in mesiobuccal, mesiolingual, distobuccal, and distolingual, and types I and II were the most common in the palatal canal. The maximum and minimum concavities were noted in the buccal (26.7%) and mesial (8.3%) surfaces, respectively. Conclusions: A wide variation exists in the number of roots and canals of maxillary and mandibular primary molars, which calls for further attention in treatment of such teeth.

Abstract:Background Root canal therapy in primary teeth is exceedingly complex due to the unique internal geometry of the pulp cavity. Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate variations in primary teeth root canal morphology and applicability of the Ahmed et al. (Int Endod J, 50, 2017, 761) alphanumeric system for classifying them. Design A retrospective analysis of 2024 primary teeth from an existing CBCT database was performed for assessing variations in root canal morphology. Descriptive statistics and the chi‐squared test were used for data analysis. Results The maxillary canines exhibited splitting levels of 5.9% (right) and 6.6% (left), and merging levels of 1% (both sides); maxillary lateral incisors showed splitting levels of 2.6% (right) and 0.8% (left), with no merging observed; mandibular second molars had splitting levels of 1.5% (right) and 0.8% (left), with no merging observed; and mandibular lateral incisors exhibited a merging level of 0.9% (right), with no splitting observed. Conclusion This study provides new insights into the variations in root canal morphology of primary teeth, particularly highlighting the variations found in primary canines. The Ahmed et al. (Int Endod J, 50, 2017, 761) classification system was found to be a useful tool for categorizing these variations.

Apical Root Canal Morphology of Mesial Roots of Mandibular First Molar Teeth with Vertucci Type II Configuration by Means of Micro–Computed Tomography

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the features of the apical root canal anatomy and its relation to the level at which 2 separate root canals merge in the mesial roots of the mandibular first molars with Vertucci type II canal configuration by using micro-computed tomography analysis.METHODS: The anatomic features of the apical 3 mm of root canals in 83 mesial roots of mandibular first molar teeth were investigated by micro-computed tomography and software imaging according to the level at which 2 separate root canals merge. The most apical slice where a visible root canal was detectable was recorded as 0 level. The specimens from where 2 root canals rejoin at within 3 mm from the 0 level were then assigned to group 1 (n = 37), whereas the specimens from where root canals rejoin 3-9 mm from the 0 level were assigned to group 2 (n = 46). Data were presented by using descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U tests, with the significance level set at 5%.RESULTS: In all specimens the long oval type of cross-sectional shape increased from 50.9% at 1 mm to 80.5% at 3 mm. Group 1 presented significantly higher major diameter values compared with group 2 (P < .05). There was no significant difference regarding minor diameter values (P > .05) between groups. Group 2 displayed significantly higher roundness values than group 1 (P < .05).CONCLUSIONS: A long oval root cross section of apical root canal anatomy is more prevalent in roots for which 2 root canals merge within apical 3 mm of root canals.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: In the present study, confluent canals in the mandibular first molar's mesial root were investigated in an Italian population by means of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: A total of 200 molars, selected from the CBCT examinations of 130 patients who required this type of X-ray study as part of their dental treatment, were examined. The evaluated parameters were number of canals, root canal system configuration, presence of apical confluences, distance between confluences and apical foramina, which canal had a higher degree of curvature, and symmetry between left and right elements in the same individual. Statistical Analysis Used: Percentages of the cases were reported. Results: All the examined roots presented two canals. In 59% of cases, a Vertucci Type IV canal configuration was observed, while in 41% of cases, a Type II configuration was observed. Apical confluences were present in 41% of cases. The average distance between confluences and apical foramina was 2.85 mm. When confluences were present, the mesiobuccal canal showed a higher degree of curvature in 78% of cases. Symmetry in Vertucci configuration was seen in 88% of cases. Conclusions: Apical confluences in the mesial roots of mandibular molar can be present in a significantly high number of cases, and their recognition is essential to prevent the iatrogenic errors during canal instrumentation.
Cone-beam Computed Tomography Analysis of the Root Canal Morphology of Mandibular Incisors Using Two Classification Systems in a Spanish Subpopulation: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the root and canal morphology in permanent mandibular incisors teeth using cone-beam computer tomography imaging in a Spanish subpopulation, and compared these findings with ipsilateral (similarity) and contralateral (symmetry) incisors. In addition, the position of canal splitting was measured.METHODS: A total of 229 datasets comprising four mandibular teeth each (n=916 incisors) were analysed using Vertucci and Ahmed et al. classifications, and, the similarity and symmetry were calculated. The distance from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ), and the most coronal canal divergence was measured (if present). The role of sex was also assessed. The Cochran Q Test, LOGIS PROC in SUDAAN, Chi-square, and Kappa were used for the different comparisons. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.RESULTS: All incisors were single-rooted and no significant differences regarding root canal morphology were found according to the sex of the subjects included in the database. The most common morphology was Vertucci type I/Ahmed et al. 1MI1(65.3% for central and 66.8% for lateral incisors respectively), followed by type III/1MI1-2-1 (31% for central and 30.6% for lateral incisors). 1.8% of the samples were considered as non-classifiable with Vertucci but were classified with codes using the Ahmed et al. system. Similarity values were 74.7% for the left side, and 74.2% for the right side, whereas symmetry values were 90% for central and 84.3% for lateral incisors. In the presence of divergences, the main (SD) distances from the CEJ were for type II/1MI1-2-1 3.8+-0.8 (centrals) 4.0+-0.7 mm (laterals); for type V/1MI1-2 this value ranged between 6.0+-1.8 and 5.5+-1.5 mm, whereas values for 1MI1-2-3-2-1 were 1.8 and 2.1 mm. No significant differences were found when the position of the most coronal divergence was compared between lateral and central incisors for the different morphologies.CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of Vertucci I/Ahmed et al. 1MI1 configuration was present in mandibular incisors from Spanish individuals. Similarity and symmetry were common, particularly for central incisors. The position of the coronal splitting of the canals varied according to the root canal morphology.
Root and canal morphology of mandibular premolar teeth in a Kuwaiti subpopulation: A CBCT clinical study

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To study the root and root canal morphology of mandibular premolars in a Kuwaiti subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).METHODS: 152 CBCT images were obtained from the radiology department archives of four dental centers in Kuwait. A total of 476 mandibular premolar teeth were analyzed by two observers. The number of roots, root canal configuration types and canal curvature measurements were examined. The relationship between sex, tooth position, and incidence of an additional canal were compared using the chi-square test, and the level of significance was set at 0.05 (P=0.05).RESULTS: The number of roots in mandibular first premolars was one in 73.9%, two in 24.9%, three and four in 1.2%. On the other hand, the number of roots in mandibular second premolars was one in 79.2% and two in 20.8%. Based on Vertucci's classification system, 18.7% of the teeth were type II followed by type VI (14.3%). The majority of the examined teeth were straight (74.8%) and the incidence of distal root angulation was about 21%. Canal configurations not included in the Vertucci classification were reported in 102 teeth (21.4%). Variability was significantly higher in the second premolars compared to first premolar (P<0.05).CONCLUSION: The Kuwaiti population has complex root canal morphology in mandibular premolar teeth.
[Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Analysis of Root Canal Configuration of 4 674 Mandibular Anterior Teeth].

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo investigate the root canal configuration of mandibular anterior teeth with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).METHODSThe CBCT imaging data of 866 patients who visited Peking University School of Stomatology from October 2012 to July 2013 were inspected by an endodontist anda radiologists together. A total of 4 674 mandibular anterior teeth were involved. The number of root, root canals and root canal configuration were observed and analyzed statistically (Chi-squared test).RESULTSAll the mandibular central incisors and lateral incisors were single root, and 0.7% (11/1 542) of canines were double roots. 6.7% (105/1 566) of central incisors, 17.4% (273/1 566) of lateral incisors and 3.0% (46/1 542) of canines had double root canals. The frequency of symmetry of double root canal was 58.7% (37/63) in central incisors, 76.1% (108/142) in lateral incisors and 29.6% (8/27) in canines. The highest frequency of double root canals in different ages was 9.8% (28/287, 31-40 years) in central incisors, 21.5% (61/284, 31-40 years) in lateral incisors and 9.2% (19/207, ≥51 years) in canines. Vertucci type III canal configurations were the most prevalent in mandibular anterior teeth.CONCLUSIONThe double root canals are most common in mandibular lateral incisors. The highest incidence of symmetry of double root canal is also observed in mandibular lateral incisors. Vertucci type III canal configurations are the most frequent type in mandibular anterior teeth.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the root and canal morphology of maxillary first and second molars by using Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).METHODS:The data of patients who underwent the CBCT scan for dental or periodontal diseases between May and September 2012 were analyzed retrospectively. In the study, 630 maxillary first molars, 519 maxillary second molars which were well-developed and without treatment were included. The number of roots, the number of root canals, and the canal configuration according to Vertucci's classification were determined. The vertucci type I was regarded as the conventional form. Other types were the variation forms and the mutation rate was calculated.RESULTS:2.38% of the maxillary first molars and 15.22% of the maxillary second molars had 2 separated roots; 97.14% of the maxillary first molars and 73.60% of the maxillary second molars had 3 roots; 10.41% of the maxillary second molars had one single root; 0.77% of the maxillary second molars had 4 roots. In 612 3-rooted maxillary first molars, additional canals were found in 30.88% of the mesiobuccal (MB) roots. In 519 3-rooted maxillary second molars, additional canals were found in 13.87% of the MB roots.CONCLUSION:CBCT scans show the root and canal anatomy accurately, with the potential of improving the outcome of endodontic treatment.
Root canal morphology and incidence of isthmus in the mesial root canal of the mandibular first molar using cone-beam computed tomography of two different scanning modes

Abstract:Introduction: The mesial root of the mandibular molar is one of the most complex internal anatomies of human dentition. This study aimed to detect root canal morphology and the incidence of isthmus in the mesial root canal of the mandibular first molar using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) of different voxel size scanning modes compared to stereomicroscopic evaluation after teeth clearance. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted mandibular first molars were collected, fixed in foam blocks, and scanned using CBCT with 150 and 400 μm voxel sizes. All the teeth were cleared and fixed in clear epoxy blocks for serial cross-sectioning from the apex, then examined using a stereomicroscope. Comparisons between cross-sectioned slices were achieved using Friedman's test ( P ≤ 0.05). Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the cleared teeth, voxel sizes of 400 and 150 μm in the detection of the root canal and isthmus. Only voxel size 150 μm was able to detect the isthmus at 1 mm and 2.5 mm from the apex. Vertucci Types IV and II were the most common canal configurations reported, with a high incidence of isthmus at 4 mm and 5.5 mm from the apex. Conclusion: The 150 μm voxel size mode provides more accurate detection of the isthmus portion and root canal morphology. Vertucci Types IV and II were the most common canal configurations, and an isthmus with a high incidence was found at 4 mm and 5.5 mm from the apex of the mesial root of the mandibular first molar.
Analysis of morphology and symmetry of the root canal system of incisors, premolars and mandibular molars using CBCT

Abstract:Knowledge of root canal internal anatomy and its variations is important forproper endodontic treatment. It is therefore necessary to investigate morphological aspects among different dental groups in the same patient to define the best protocol for the case. Aim: To evaluate the morphology and symmetry of homologous incisors, premolars and mandibular molars using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and method: Descriptive statistical analysis was performed for the frequency of categorical variables, and a chi-square test or Fisher 's exact test was used to test whether gender and side were associated with number of roots, number of canals, and Vertucci's classification. Forty-five CBCT scans were evaluated, and 444 mandibular teeth were analyzed. The number of roots, number of canals, classification of the canals in each root according to Vertucci and presence of a symmetrical relationship between pairs of posterior teeth were analyzed. Results: The resuls showed that 74% of mandibular central incisors had type I root canal, 26% of mandibular lateral incisors had type I and, with a significant difference in the number of canals between males and females (p < 0.05). In mandibular first premolars, 70.5% had type I; and in mandibular second premolars, 98.5% had type I. Mandibular first molars had two roots in 98% of the cases. Second mandibular molars had two roots in 92.5% of the cases, one root in 6%, and three roots in 1.5%. Symmetry between central incisors was higher in females than in males. Conclusión: Teeth of the same group can have different morphologies in the same patient.

Abstract:Background: This study was conducted to analyze the morphological variations of maxillary and mandibular molars in the Turkish population, to evaluate the distances between the additional canals vertically and horizontally, to guide clinicians by determining the distance between the canals. Materials and Methods: The maxillary and mandibular first and second molars (a total of 50 teeth per group) were using in the study. The teeth were embedded in an arch-shaped silicone impression material. CBCT images of the teeth were recorded. Two examiners scrutinized the root canal systems and sought out any additional canals. Results: Upper first molars; 16% had three canals, 64% had four canals and 20% had five canals. The average distance between mesiobuccal 1(mb1)-mesiobuccal 2(mb2), mesiobuccal 1(mb1)-mesiobuccal 3(mb3), and distobuccal 1(db1)-distobuccal 2(db2) was 2.35, 2.52 and 1.91 millimeters, respectively. Upper second molars; 32% had three canals, 52% had four canals and 16% had five canals. The distance between mb1-mb2 and db1-db2 canals was 2.14 and 2.01 mm, respectively. In 16%, the mb2 canal was observed at an average depth of 0.72 mm from mb1. No significant difference was found between the number of canals and additional canals in the upper first molars and upper second molars teeth (p=0,275). Lower first molars; Two canals were detected in 8%, three canals in 20%, four canals in 28% and five canals in 44%. While 60% of the midmesial canals merged with the mesiolingual canal, 20% merged with the mesiobuccal, and 20% terminated in separate apices. Mesiobuccal(mb)-midmesial and mesiolingual(ml)-midmesial distances were 1.81 and 1.76 mm, respectively. Lower second molars; 4% had one canal, 8% had two canals, 60% had three canals, 28% had four canals. No midmesal canal was observed in the lower second molars. There was a significant difference between the number of teeth with three canals in the lower first molars and lower second molars teeth (p=0,00). Conclusions: During root canal treatment, all canal access must be accurately identified. Using adequate light sources, checking the pulp floor with canal probes, strengthening the theoretical knowledge about the points where additional canals can be found can reduce the risk of missed canals. Abstract:Aim . To investigate the root canal anatomy of single-rooted permanent maxillary and mandibular canines in an Indian population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methodology . A total of 250 permanent maxillary canines and 250 permanent mandibular canines were selected and scanned using CBCT. The root anatomy of each tooth was evaluated for the following parameters: the pattern of the root canals, anatomic length of the crown and the root, the presence of accessory canals, the shape of the access cavity, the position of the apical foramina, root diameter, and dentin thickness of the root. Results . Majority of the teeth had a Type I canal configuration in both maxillary canines (81.6%) and mandibular canines (79.6%). In maxillary canine the other canal patterns found were Type III (11.6%), Type II (2.8%), Type V (2%), Type XIX (1.2%), and Type IV (0.8%). In mandibular canines the various other canal patterns found were Type III (13.6%), Type II (3.2%), Type V (2%), and Type XIX (1.6%). Apical foramina were laterally positioned in the majority of the teeth, 70.4% and 65.6% in maxillary and mandibular canines, respectively. 12% of the maxillary canines and 12.8% of the mandibular canines had accessory canals. Conclusion . The root canal anatomy of permanent maxillary and mandibular canines varied widely in an Indian population.

Abstract:Objective To investigate and analyze the root and root canal morphology of mandibular first molars (MFMs) in the Tibetan population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to provide references for clinical root canal treatment in the Tibetan population. Methods This study was reviewed and approved by the Ethics Committee, and informed consent was obtained from the patients. CBCT imaging data of 300 mandibular first molars from 300 Tibetan patients were included. Patient age, the number of roots in mandibular first molars were recorded. The morphology and incidence of mesial root and mesial root canals and the morphology and incidence of distal root and distal root canals were statistically analyzed by Vertucci classification. Results There were 198 double-root teeth and 102 three-root teeth in the 300 mandibular first permanent molars. Among the three-rooted molars, 1 case had mesiolingual roots, and the rest had distolingual roots. The incidence rate of the distolingual root was 33.7%(101/300). The most common root canal configuration was Vertucci Ⅳ 65.7% (197/300), followed by Vertucci Ⅱ 20.3% (61/300) in the mesial roots. The overall incidence of middle mesial canals (MMCs) was 6% (18/300), with the highest incidence of MMCs in the 20-40 year-old group at 9% (9/100). The distal roots canals of single-distal-rooted mandibular first molars were mainly Vertucci Ⅰ 66.8% (133/199), followed by Vertucci Ⅱ 14.6% (29/199) and Vertucci Ⅳ 11.6% (23/199). For the mandibular first permanent molars with two distal roots, 96% (97/101) of the distal buccal roots and 100% (101/101) of the distal lingual roots were Vertucci Ⅰ root canals. Conclusion The root and root canal morphology of mandibular first permanent molars in a Tibetan population is complex and variable. Approximately one-third of patients have distolingual roots, and clinicians should carefully explore the root canals under the guidance of CBCT.

Abstract:Introduction: Successful endodontic treatment depends on completely clearing, shaping, and filling the prepared canals. Knowledge of the common and aberrant varying pulp anatomies is essential for suitable root canal treatment. Since, this anatomy is complex and varies morphologically in different populations. This study aims to determine the number of roots, canals, and evaluation of mandibular premolars canals using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in one of Iran's northern provinces (Golestan). Materials and methods: CBCT axial, coronal, and sagittal slices of two hundred and twelve mandibular premolars were analyzed to determine the number of roots and canals based on Vertucci type. The images were analyzed in a one-millimeter slice in mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions based on gender. The data were analyzed using the Chi-score test to compare the components if the defaults were not established. A significance level of 0.05 was considered. Result: Of the two hundred twelve teeth evaluated, 130 (61.3%) were first premolars, and 82 (38.6%) were second premolars. Most first premolars (78.5%) and almost all second premolars (97.6%) had one root. Morphological types of root canals were identified based on Vertucci's classification types I, II, III, IV, V, or VIII, and type I was the most frequent. There were no significant associations between number of roots and sex (P>0.05). Conclusion: Mandibular premolars mostly had one root and type I Vertucci morphology. The frequency of two-canal premolars was higher in the male population. Although the abundance of two or three roots with different morphologies was also observed, the possibility of the presence of an additional root canal should be considered.
