Abstract:A new multidentate soft-ligand 2,6-bis(5,6-dinonyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl-pyridine (NonBTP) was synthesized. The solvent extraction of Pd(II) and some typical metals Ru(III), Mo(VI), Fe(III), Co(II), Zr(IV), and Ni(II) with NonBTP/30 % 1-octanol-70 % 1-dodecane was investigated at 298 K. It was performed by examining the effects of contact time and the concentration of HNO3 in the range of (0.42 to 5.11) M. NonBTP showed a strong extraction ability and high selectivity for Pd(II) over the tested metals, which had very weak or almost no extraction. The optimum acidity in the extraction of Pd(II) was around 3.0 M HNO3. It was ascribed to the complexation of Pd(II), a weak Lewis acid and an electron-pair acceptor, with nitrogen inside NonBTP, a weak Lewis base and an electron-pair donor. The extraction of NonBTP for Pd(II) was an exothermic reaction. The composition of the extracted species was determined to be Pd(NO3)(2)center dot 2NonBTP. Considering the excellent complexation of minor actinides MAs(III) with NonBTP, the results are beneficial to simultaneous partitioning of MA(III) and Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste by the NonBTP-containing extraction system.
Preparation of Neptunyl and Plutonyl Acetates to Access Non-Aqueous Transuranium Coordination Chemistry

Abstract:Uranyl diacetate dihydrate is a useful reagent for the preparation of uranyl coordination complexes, as it is a well-defined stoichiometric compound featuring moderately basic acetates that can facilitate protonolysis reactivity, unlike other anions commonly used in synthetic actinide chemistry such as halides or nitrate. Despite these attractive features, analogous neptunium (Np) and plutonium (Pu) compounds are unknown to date. Here, a modular synthetic route is reported for accessing stoichiometric neptunyl(VI) and plutonyl(VI) diacetate compounds that can serve as starting materials for transuranic coordination chemistry. The new neptunyl and plutonyl complexes, as well as a corresponding molecular uranyl complex, are isomorphous in the solid state, and in solution show similar solubility properties that facilitate their use in synthesis. In both solid and solution state, the +VI oxidation state (O.S.) is maintained, as demonstrated by vibrational and optical spectroscopy, confirming that acetate anions can stabilize the oxidizing, high-valent +VI states of Np and Pu as they do for the relatively more stable U(VI). All three acetate salts react smoothly with a model diprotic ligand, affording incorporation of U(VI), Np(VI), and Pu(VI) cores into molecular coordination compounds that occurs concomitantly with elimination of acetic acid; the new complexes are high-valent, yet overall charge neutral, facilitating entry into non-aqueous chemistry by rational synthesis. Joint computational studies reveal that the dianionic ligand framework assists in stabilizing the +VI O.S. through strong sigma donation to the 5f shells of the actinides, highlighting the potential usefulness of protonolysis reactivity toward preparation of stabilized high-valent transuranic species.

Abstract:Seeking the cost-effective, highly efficient functional materials with simple preparation procedures have always been a goal in the field of nuclides separation. Due to the effects of protonation and stability, the recovery of actinides like Th(IV) from molar concentrations of acidic solutions for most present materials still a challenge. Herein, we have combined the recently reported phenanthroline phosphonate (POPhen) ligands holding strong selective affinity for actinides in molar concentrations of HNO3 and the commonly used macroporous resin XAD7 to develop two novel POPhen ligands functionalized XAD-7 composites for the highly efficient removal of Th (IV) from molar concentrations of HNO3 solutions via a simple but effective method. The results of SEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, FT-IR, solid state 13C/31P NMR and XPS spectra studies confirmed that two phenanthroline phosphonates nBu-POPhen (n-butyl) and iBu-POPhen (isobutyl) were successfully loaded onto the pore structures of XAD-7 carrier through physical interactions. Both two adsorbents showed strong sorption ability, high selectivity and fast sorption rates for Th(IV) in 3-4 M HNO3 solutions. The sorption capacities of Th (IV) by nBu-POPhen/XAD-7 and iBu-POPhen/XAD-7 (around 25 % ligand loading) were 167.5 and 161.4 mg/g respectively at 298 K in 3.0 M HNO3. Dynamic adsorption-stripping experiments, TOC and radiation stability studies further validated the practical application potential of the as-synthesized adsorbents. The sorption mechanism of Th(IV) was deeply elucidated by EDS-STEM, AC-HAADF imaging, XPS survey spectra, EXAFS analysis and DFT theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Development of new synthetic methods to employ with transuranium organometallic complexes will help further the field and may provide a stronger understanding of their distinct reactivity, electronic structures, and chemical bonding. Although the organoneptunium field has grown over the last decade, just a handful of complexes have been synthesized, most of which are found in the trivalent oxidation state. Few reactions with neptunium (Np) have considered the stereochemical outcome, thus we employed a diastereoselective template protocol to synthesize meso (or: C 2 ) complexes of neptunium( IV ). Following previous success with the diastereoselective synthesis of ( ( t Bu2P) ONO)UCl 2 (dtbpy) ( 1 ), adaptation to NpCl 4 (dme) 2 led to the isolation of diastereopure ( ( t Bu2P) ONO)NpCl 2 (dtbpy) ( 2 ), ( ( t Bu2P) ONO = 2,6-bis((di- tert -butylphosphino)-methanolato)pyridine). The addition of a bulky indenide ligand, derived from the in situ deprotonation of 4,7-dimethyl-1,3-bis(1-methylethyl)-1 H -indene (1,3-( i Pr) 2 -4,7-Me 2 -C 9 H 3 ), was pursued to synthesize the organoactinide complexes ( ( t Bu2P) ONO)U(1,3-( i Pr) 2 -4,7-Me 2 -C 9 H 3 )Cl ( 3 ) and ( ( t Bu2P) ONO)Np(1,3-( i Pr) 2 -4,7-Me 2 -C 9 H 3 )Cl ( 4 ). Bonding analyses consisting of orbital localization and energy decomposition methods show resemblances in covalent character between uranium ( 1 and 3 ) and neptunium ( 2 and 4 ) systems. However, an increased orbital overlap was identified in the metal – indenide with respect to the metal–dtbpy interaction, mainly driven by 5f electrons. This was attributed to the better symmetry match between the organic ligand and metal orbitals that allowed the participation of the 5f orbitals.

Abstract:Neptunium makes up the largest percentage of minor actinides found in spent nuclear fuel, yet separations of this element have proven difficult due to its rich redox chemistry. Developing new reprocessing techniques should rely on understanding how to control the Np oxidation state and its interactions with different ligands. Designing new ligands for separations requires understanding how to properly tune a system toward a desired trait through functionalization. Emerging technologies for minor actinide separations focus on ligands containing carboxylate or pyridine functional groups, which are desirable due to their high degree of functionalization. Here, we use DFT calculations to study the interactions of carboxylate and polypyridine ligands with the neptunyl cation [Np(V/VI)O2]+/2+. A systematic study is performed by varying the electronic properties of the carboxylate and polypyridine ligands through the inclusion of different electron-withdrawing and electron-donating R groups. We focus on how these groups can affect geometric properties, electronic structure, and bonding characterization as a function of the metal oxidation state and ligand character and discuss how these factors can play a role in neptunium ligand design principles.
PCET-driven Reactivity of Neptunyl(VI) Yields Oxo-bridged Np(V) and Np(IV) Species

Abstract:A reaction sequence based upon the principles of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) has been used to access two unconventional oxo-deficient polynuclear complexes of neptunium (Np). The complexes featuring mono-μ2-oxo motifs assemble under ambient atmosphere upon dissolution of neptunyl(VI) diacetate dihydrate (NpO2(OAc)2(H2O)2·HOAc) in methanol followed by addition of a supporting pentadentate ligand (LNM); one complex is a mixed-valent [NpV,NpIV,NpV ] trimer with two bridging μ2-oxos and the other is a [NpV,NpV ] dimer featuring a single μ2-oxo. The outer Np centers are also capped with terminal oxo ligands. Spectroscopic and spectrokinetic findings show that intermediate [NpV O2(OAc)]n species form prior to metal chelation by LNM; electrolysis experiments demonstrate that production of Np(V) gives rise to asynchronous proton transfer that does not occur otherwise (in the Np(VI) state) as well as condensation (loss of H2O) and formation of the polynuclear complexes. The oxo-deficient nature of these products is attributable to the reduction/condensation reaction sequence of PCET. Consequently, PCET reactivity appears poised to complement more established techniques for interconverting actinide oxidation states, a prospect with considerable applications in fuel recycling for low-carbon nuclear energy.

Abstract:The study of the redox chemistry of mid-actinides (U - Pu) has historically relied on cerium as a model, due to the accessibility of trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states for these ions. Recently, dramatic shifts of lanthanide 4+/3+ non-aqueous redox couples have been established within a homoleptic imidophosphorane ligand framework. Herein we extend the chemistry of the imidophosphorane ligand (NPC = [N=PtBu(pyrr)2]-; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl) to tetrahomoleptic NPC complexes of neptunium and cerium (1-M, 2-M, M = Np, Ce) and present comparative structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies of these complexes. Large cathodic shifts in the M4+/3+ (M = Ce, U, Np) couples underpin the stabilization of higher metal oxidation states owing to the strongly donating nature of the NPC ligands, providing access to the U5+/4+, U6+/5+, and to an unprecedented, well-behaved Np5+/4+ redox couple. The differences in the chemical redox properties of the U vs. Ce and Np complexes are rationalized based on their redox potentials, degree of structural rearrangement upon reduction/oxidation, relative molecular orbital energies, and orbital composition analyses employing density functional theory.

Abstract:Unfolding the solution coordination chemistry of high-valent transuranium elements with the "CHON"-type ligands is important to understand the fundamental chemistry of actinides and to design more efficient extractants for partitioning of transuranium elements in advanced nuclear fuel cycles. Here, the complexation of a hexavalent neptunyl ion (NpO22+ or Np(VI)) with oxydiacetic acid (ODA) has been systematically investigated in comparison with its amide analogues N,N-dimethyl-3-oxa-glutaramic acid (DMOGA) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-3-oxa-glutaramide (TMOGA) both experimentally and computationally. The formation of both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes between Np(VI) and the three ligands was identified by spectrophotometry, and their stability constants were obtained and compared with those of hexavalent U(VI) and Pu(VI). The corresponding bonding nature is elucidated by using energy decomposition analysis (EDA), electrostatic potential (ESP), ELF contours, and natural orbitals for chemical valence (NOCV) methods, which shows that the Np-O bonds are essentially ionic in character and the unoccupied 6d orbitals of Np play a key role in enhancing the covalent interactions between Np(VI) and the three ligands.
Ab initio predictions for the reaction mechanism and orbital topological properties of the formation of Neptunimine, Plutonimine, and its side products

Abstract:Exploring the different mechanisms involved in the application of actinide is necessary to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of actinide science. In this study, the mechanisms of gas-phase Np and Pu atoms dissociating NH3 molecules forming Neptunimine and Plutonimine complexes were systematically investigated using different approaches of density functional theory. A new dehydrogenation channel was discovered. The results reveal that the intermediates HAn-NH2 are the lowest energy in the overall reaction, and the direct planar evolution dehydrogenations are the lowest energy reaction path. Besides, the mechanism of the initial complexation process is discussed on the electron localization function, atoms-in-molecules, atomic dipole moment corrected Hirshfeld atomic charges, and electron density difference analysis. The results indicate that An-N in complex I exhibits a very weak covalent interaction, and it comes down to pulling the original dipole moment of the NH3 molecule and stretched between An atom and three H atoms. Abstract:Neptunium can exist in multiple oxidation states, including the rare and poorly understood heptavalent form. In this work, we monitored the formation of heptavalent neptunium [Np(VII)O4(OH)2]3‐ during ozonolysis of aqueous MOH (M = Li, Na, K) solutions using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. All experimental reactions were closely monitored via absorption and vibrational spectroscopy to follow both the oxidation state and the speciation of neptunium guided by the calculated vibrational frequencies for various neptunium species. The mechanism of the reaction partly involves oxidative dissolution of transient Np(VI) oxide/hydroxide solid phases, the identity of which are dependent on the co‐precipitating counter‐cation Li+/Na+/K+. Additional calculations suggest that the most favorable energetic pathway occurs through the reaction of a [Np(V)O2(OH)4]3‐ with the hydroxide radical to form [Np(VI)O2(OH)4]2‐, followed by an additional oxidation with HO● to create [Np(VII)O4(OH)2]3‐.

Abstract:Effective treatment of the transuranic neptunium and plutonium from nuclear waste is of great importance and remains a challenge for developing advanced nuclear fuel cycles. Currently, novel ligands for efficient separation of actinides need to be designed urgently. Neutral extractants containing phosphorus have shown great potential for actinides separation. In this paper, we systematically explored the extraction and separation performances of neptunium(IV,V,VI) and plutonium(IV) by three phosphorus derivatives, di(1-methyl-heptyl) methyl phosphonate (P350), tri- iso -amyl phosphate (TiAP), and tributyl phosphate (TBP) by density functional theory (DFT). The outcomes showed that these neutral phosphorus reagents act as monodentate ligands through the PO group for all the extraction complexes. According to bonding nature analysis, the P350 ligand has the strongest complexing ability to the studied actinide cations. In addition, these ligands show a preference to coordination with Pu 4+ and NpO 2 2+ over Np 4+ and NpO 2 + , respectively. As expected, the thermodynamic analysis demonstrated the potential application of these neutral extractants in Np and Pu separation, among which the P350 ligand is more promising than TBP and TiAP in acid solution system. This work can help to further understand the separation mechanism of Np/Pu with neutral phosphorus reagents and provide insight into the development of highly efficient extractants in recovery of Np and Pu.

Abstract:Crystalline coordination complexes of actinides, especially in atypical oxidation states, are not only fundamentally important for expanding the notably limited knowledge on the bonding nature of actinides but could also provide critical information toward the development of nuclear fuel cycle, waste management, and national security. Plutonium (Pu) is the only element in the periodic table that could exist in four oxidation states in aqueous solutions simultaneously. It represents a relatively blank gap in coordination chemistry study owing to the highly radiotoxic nature of its available isotopes and its unique position in the actinide series. Isolation of the pentavalent plutonium [Pu(V)] complex has been thought to be challenging because the highly reactive and dynamic surface redox behavior of the element, and/or the disproportionation trend of the Pu(V) state, make it thermodynamically unfavorable in aqueous solutions, which is even amplified upon strong coordination. Herein, we document a distinct Pu(V) crown ether inclusion complex, namely, (PuO2)-O-V[18-crown-6]ClO4, which could be crystallized and subsequently, stabilized during a mild reduction reaction from a stock solution of Pu(VI) perchlorate. This compound was characterized fully, using X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic techniques, providing the first experimental spectroscopy data on a solid-state complex of Pu(V) with rich electronic transition information. Relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the ground-state electronic configuration of Pu(V) being f(3) ([core]5f(delta)(2)5f(Phi)(1)) and demonstrated further that a combination of cavity and steric repulsion effects assisted in the stabilization of the Pu(V) species within the 18-crown-6 ligand complex.
Probing the protonation and reduction of heptavalent neptunium with computational guidance

Abstract:Influence of pH on the speciation and stability of heptavalent neptunium is poorly understood although it is frequently invoked in the literature to explain experimental observations. The present study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) methodology to assess the thermodynamic feasibility of protonation reactions for the Np( VII ) anion complex and the impact on its reduction to Np( VI ). This theoretical framework is then explored experimentally through the titration and systematic protonation of Np( VII ) in solution and solid-state samples while monitoring them spectroscopically. Computational results reveal that protonation reactions with the axial OH − ligands of the Np( VII ) anionic complex, [NpO 4 (OH) 2 ] 3− , are more thermodynamically favorable than the equatorial oxo ligands. In addition, DFT studies indicated that up to four sequential protonation reactions may be feasible before reduction becomes thermodynamically favorable. Experimental results also uncover that protonation leads to distinct changes in the observable vibrational signals and UV-Vis absorption features. Overall, we observed that the protonation of [NpO 4 (OH) 2 ] 3− in solution and in the solid-state occurs before reduction to the Np( VI )O 2 2+ species.

Abstract:Recent advances enabled the discovery of heterometallic molecules for many metals: main group, d-block, lanthanides, and some actinides (U, Th). These complexes have at least two different metals joined by bridging ligands or by direct metal-metal bonding interactions. They are attractive because they can enable chemical cooperativity between metals from different parts of the periodic table. Some heterometallics provide access to unique reactivity and others exhibit physical properties that cannot be accessed by homometallic species. We envisioned that transuranic heterometallics might similarly enable new transuranic chemistry, though synthetic routes to such compounds have yet to be developed. Reported here is the first synthesis of a molecular transuranic complex that contains plutonium (Pu) and cobalt (Co). Our analyses of PuCl3{CoCp[OP(OEt)2]3} showed Pu(iv) and Co(iii) were present and suggested that the Pu(iv) oxidation state was stabilized by the electron donating phosphite ligands. This synthetic method - and the demonstration that Pu(iv) can be stabilized in a heterobimetallic molecular setting - provides a foundation for further exploration of transuranic multimetallic chemistry.

Abstract:Lanthanides are often used as surrogates to study the properties of actinide compounds. Their behaviour is considered to be quite similar as they both possess f valence electrons and are close in size and chemical properties. This study examines the potential of using two lanthanides (neodymium and cerium) as surrogates for plutonium during the thermal decomposition of isomorphic oxalate compounds, in the trivalent oxidation state, into oxides. Thus, the thermal decomposition of neodymium, cerium and plutonium (III) oxalates are investigated by several coupled thermal analyses (TG-DTA/DSC-MS/FT-IR) and complementary characterisation techniques (XRD, UV-vis, FT-IR, SEM, carbon analyser) under both oxidizing and inert atmosphere. The thermal decomposition mechanisms determined in this study confirmed some previous results reported in the literature, among diverging propositions, while also elucidating some original mechanisms not previously considered. Calculated thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for the studied systems under both atmospheres are reported and compared with available literature data. Similarities and differences between the thermal behaviour of plutonium(III) and lanthanide(III) oxalates are outlined.

Abstract:Advances in nuclear power reactors include the use of mixed oxide fuel, containing uranium and plutonium oxides. The high-temperature behaviour and structure of PuO 2– x above 1,800 K remain largely unexplored, and these conditions must be considered for reactor design and planning for the mitigation of severe accidents. Here, we measure the atomic structure of PuO 2– x through the melting transition up to 3,000 ± 50 K using X-ray scattering of aerodynamically levitated and laser-beam-heated samples, with O/Pu ranging from 1.57 to 1.76. Liquid structural models consistent with the X-ray data are developed using machine-learned interatomic potentials and density functional theory. Molten PuO 1.76 contains some degree of covalent Pu–O bonding, signalled by the degeneracy of Pu 5 f and O 2 p orbitals. The liquid is isomorphous with molten CeO 1.75 , demonstrating the latter as a non-radioactive, non-toxic, structural surrogate when differences in the oxidation potentials of Pu and Ce are accounted for. These characterizations provide essential constraints for modelling pertinent to reactor safety design.

Theoretical Insights into Transplutonium Element Separation with Electronically Modulated Phenanthroline-Derived Bis-Triazine Ligands

Abstract:In the process of spent fuel reprocessing, it is highly difficult to extract transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides. A deep understanding of the electronic structure of transplutonium complexes is essential for development of steady ligands for in-group separation of transplutonium actinides. In this work, we have systematically explored the potential in-group separation ability of transplutonium elements of typical quadridentate N-donor ligands (phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine, BTPhen derivatives) through quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Our calculations demonstrate that ligands with electron-donating groups have stronger coordination abilities, and the substitutions of Br and phenol at the 4-position of the 1,10-phenanthroline have a higher effect on the ligand than those at the 5-position. Bonding analysis indicates that the covalent interaction of An3+ complexes becomes stronger from Am to Cf apart from Cm, which is because the energy of the 5f orbital gradually decreases and becomes energy-degenerate with the 2p orbitals of ligands. The most negative values of binding energies indicate the higher stability of Cf3+ complexes, in line with the larger covalency in the Cf–L bonds compared with An–L (An = Am, Cm, Bk). In addition, electron-donating group phenol can enhance the covalent interaction between ligands and heavy actinides. Consequently, the extraction ability of ligands with electron-donating substituents for heavy actinides is generally stronger than other ligands. Nevertheless, these ligands exhibit diverse separation abilities to in-group actinide recovery. Therefore, the enhancement of covalency does not necessarily lead to the improvement of separation ability, which may be caused by different extraction abilities. Compared with the tetradentate N, O-donor ligands (2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthrolinel, DAPhen derivatives), species with BTPhen ligands display stronger covalent interaction and higher extraction capacity. In terms of in-group separation ability, the BTPhen ligands seem to have advantages in separation of californium from curium, while the DAPhen ligands possess stronger abilities to separate americium from curium. Abstract:High level liquid waste (HLLW) generated through nuclear reaction and spent fuel reprocessing contains the critical transuranic element, neptunium (Np). Efficient recovery of Np from HLLW via TRPO (trialkyl phosphine oxide) process not only benefits radioactive contamination remediation, but also boosts precious nuclear resources recycling. However, such a process including Np(V)-Np(IV) conversion is highly dependent on the coexisting components in HLLW yet the underlying mechanism is still not clear, which adversely restricts Np recovery in multiple scenarios. Herein, effect of concomitant metal ions on the reduction and extraction of Np(V) was studied and molybdenum (Mo) was identified as the vital role in this course. Additionally, in combination with absorption spectral analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and solvent extraction, the promotion in the extraction of Np by Mo is elucidated as the catalytic reduction both in the aqueous phase and the organic phase. This study can help us better understand the redox chemistry of Np in the treatment of HLLW.
