Abstract:Hot carrier solar cells could offer a solution to achieve high efficiency solar cells. Due to the hot-phonon bottleneck in perovskites, the hot carrier lifetime could reach hundreds of ps. Such that exploring perovskites could be a good way to promote hot carrier technology. With the incorporation of large organic cations, the hot carrier lifetime can be improved. By using ultrafast transient spectroscopy, the hot carrier relaxation and extraction kinetics are measured. From the transient kinetics, 2-phenyl-acetamidine cation based perovskites exhibit the highest initial carrier temperature, longest carrier relaxation, and slowest hot carrier relaxation. Such superior behavior could be attributed to reduced electron-phonon coupling induced by lattice strain, which is a result of the large organic cation and also a possible surface electronic state change. Our discovery exhibits the potential to use large organic cations for the use of hot carrier perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:In lead halide perovskites, owing to the strong Frohlich coupling, carrier dynamics that governs the optoelectronic performance is greatly affected by the lattice vibrations. In this emerging class of materials, injected hot carriers quickly relax by emitting optical phonons, and if this process is sufficiently fast, hot optical phonons can be generated, which may in turn hamper the carrier transport. However, the transient interaction between hot phonons and carriers has not yet been investigated. Herein, we identified the transient absorption feature of hot phonons in lead bromide perovskites and then extracted the hot-phonon dynamics. The hot-phonon decay mechanism was uncovered by temperature-dependent measurements. The hot-phonon decay in lead bromide perovskites was an order of magnitude faster than that in GaAs, attributed to the large anharmonicity arising from the lattice softness and structural fluctuation. The carrier mobility was also transiently suppressed by hot phonons, and the mobility recovery was accompanied by the decay of hot phonons.
A-site Cation Influence on the Conduction Band of Lead Bromide Perovskites

Abstract:Hot carrier solar cells hold promise for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit. Slow hot carrier cooling is one of the most intriguing properties of lead halide perovskites and distinguishes this class of materials from competing materials used in solar cells. Here we use the element selectivity of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy to uncover a previously hidden feature in the conduction band states, the {\sigma}-{\pi} energy separation, and find that it is strongly influenced by the strength of electronic coupling between the A-cation and bromide-lead sublattice. Our finding provides an alternative mechanism to the commonly discussed polaronic screening and hot phonon bottleneck carrier cooling mechanisms. Our work emphasizes the optoelectronic role of the A-cation, provides a comprehensive view of A-cation effects in the electronic and crystal structures, and outlines a broadly applicable spectroscopic approach for assessing the impact of chemical alterations of the A-cation on halide and potentially non-halide perovskite electronic structure.

Nanometer‐Resolved Mapping of Organic Cation Migration Behavior in Methylammonium Lead Halide Perovskites

Abstract:The performance and stability of organic metal halide perovskite (OMHP) optoelectronic devices have been associated with ion migration. Understanding of nanoscale resolved organic cation migration mechanism would facilitate structure engineering and commercialization of OMHP. Here, we report a three‐dimensional approach for in situ nanoscale infrared imaging of organic ion migration behavior in OMHPs, enabling to distinguish migrations along grain boundary and in crystal lattice. Our results reveal that organic cation migration along OMHP film surface and grain boundaries (GBs) occurs at lower biases than in crystal lattice. We visualize the transition of organic cation migration channels from GBs to volume upon increasing electric field. The temporal resolved results demonstrate the fast MA+ migration kinetics at GBs, which is comparable to diffusivity of halide ions. Our findings help understand the role of organic cations in the performance of OMHP devices, and the proposed approach holds broad applicability for revealing migration mechanisms of organic ions in OMHPs based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The behavior of hot carriers in metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) present a valuable foundation for understanding the details of carrier-phonon coupling in the materials as well as the prospective development of highly efficient hot carrier and carrier multiplication solar cells. Whilst the carrier population dynamics during cooling have been intensely studied, the evolution of the hot carrier properties, namely the hot carrier mobility, remain largely unexplored. To address this, we introduce a novel ultrafast visible pump - infrared push - terahertz probe spectroscopy (PPP-THz) to monitor the real-time conductivity dynamics of cooling carriers in methylammonium lead iodide. We find a decrease in mobility upon optically depositing energy into the carriers, which is typical of band-transport. Surprisingly, the conductivity recovery dynamics are incommensurate with the intraband relaxation measured by an analogous experiment with an infrared probe (PPP- IR), and exhibit a negligible dependence on the density of hot carriers. These results and the kinetic modelling reveal the importance of highly-localized lattice heating on the mobility of the hot electronic states. This collective polaron-lattice phenomenon may contribute to the unusual photophysics observed in MHPs and should be accounted for in devices that utilize hot carriers.

Abstract:Methylammonium lead-iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, hereafter referred to as MAPbI(3)) perovskite has emerged as a dazzling nova in the solar cell realm. To date, the surface physics of these materials is still puzzling, but in this work, we demonstrate that the optical dynamics in MAPbI(3) is primarily determined by the surface states. Pb dangling bonds on the surface of MAPbI(3) introduce shallow electronic states. The carrier localization effect for these electronic states is rather weak as the lifetimes of the carriers on the iodine-poor surface are comparative to those in the interior region of MAPbI(3). In contrast, rich-iodine on the surface of MAPbI(3) induces deep trap centers for the carriers, which are detrimental to long carrier diffusion lengths. It is further proved that the surface passivation, which surprisingly prolongs the carrier diffusion lengths, mainly works on the rich-iodine on the surface rather than the Pb dangling bonds. This better understanding of the surface physics could provide essential information for improving the performance of photoelectronic devices based on MAPbI(3) perovskites.
Hot Carrier Mobility Dynamics Unravel Competing Sub-ps Cooling Processes in Lead Halide Perovskites

Abstract:The outstanding photovoltaic performances of lead halide perovskite (LHP) thin film solar cells are due in particular to the large diffusion length of photocarriers. The mechanism behind this property and its dependence on the various anions and cations in the LHP material composition are still an active topic of debate. Here, we apply ultrabroadband terahertz spectroscopy with a time resolution < 200 fs to probe the early carrier mobility dynamics of photoexcited perovskite samples of different chemical compositions. An increase in the carrier mobility with time constants in the range of 0.3 to 0.7 ps is observed for different LHPs, in which the signal amplitude is larger at shorter excitation wavelengths. This feature is assigned to the relaxation of hot carriers from low-curvature regions of the band structure to the bottom of the valley, where their effective mass accounts for the maximum mobility. The dependence of the mobility dynamics on the initial photogenerated carrier population shows that carrier cooling competes with a dynamic screening effect associated with polaron formation and relaxation. A kinetic model that considers all competing processes is proposed. Simulations based on this model allow us to fit the experimental data well and evidence a composition dependence of the dynamic screening lifetime.

Abstract:The slow hot-carrier relaxation properties of lead halide perovskites show great promise for hot-carrier solar cells. Here, we discover that the hot-carrier relaxation could be prolonged by two orders of magnitude in lead halide perovskites. By ultrafast spectroscopy, we unravel a slow hot-carrier relaxation process mediated by an intermediate state above the conduction band minimum (CBM). This intermediate state is formed by incorporating polar methylammonium (MA) cations. The first-principle calculation further confirms that the incorporation of MA cations introduces a prolonged relaxation process from CBM + 1 to CBM state, which are the split-off states of the CBM due to the strong spin-orbit coupling. The prolonging effect is interpreted that MA cations largely increase the lattice distortions and detune their inter-state coupling. This work reveals a neglected way to prolong the hot-carrier relaxation processes and provides guidance for the hot-carrier photovoltaics to overcome the current Shockley-Queisser limit.

A study on the effects of mixed organic cations on the structure and properties in lead halide perovskites

Abstract:Recently, organic-lead halide perovskites have emerged as strong competitors in photovoltaic and general optoelectronic applications owing to their remarkable characteristics, including high balance hole and electron mobility, strong absorption coefficient and long carrier lifetime. However, the commercial applicability of these materials is hampered by their relative lack of stability compared to established inorganic and organic semiconductors. It has been found that it is possible to tune the properties and stability of the organic-lead halide perovskite materials by site-substitution at A sites of the ABX3 perovskite structure. Here, organic cations (NH4+, HC (NH2)2+, and CH3CH2NH3+) were successfully incorporated in the methylammonium-based perovskite crystal to investigate the role of organic cation size on structure, optical features, thermal stability, and electrical transport properties. Powder X-ray diffraction results indicate that the size of organic cations can not only cause lattice strain by lattice contraction or dilation but also may induce phase transitions by octahedral tilting. Meanwhile, band gaps of these crystals show that organic cations could tune the band gap energy of the perovskites by changing the Pb-I bond angle, which agrees with previous reports. The result of thermogravimetric analysis indicates that thermal stability is related to the probability of HI formation, which is directly related to the acidity of the organic species. These results represent an important step to highlight the role of organic cations in hybrid perovskite materials, which will further benefit the fundamental understanding of materials and device optimization.

Abstract:An in‐depth discussion of the progress achieved in A‐site cation engineering regarding phase transition, dimension, crystal quality, bandgaps, stability, and effective charge transport is concluded. Furthermore, A‐site cation‐regulated LHP materials have demonstrated a diversity of applications and the possible challenges in solar cells, light‐emitting diodes, photodetectors, and lasers. Lead halide perovskite (LHP) have gained considerable research attention for their numerous photoelectric applications attributed to their ease of processability and distinctive photoelectric properties. A‐site cation engineering provides an effective solution to optimize the bandgap further, enhance stability, and improve the photoelectric properties of LHP materials. In this review, an in‐depth examination of the progress achieved in the field of A‐site cation engineering on the structure, properties, synthesis methods, and photoelectric applications of LHP is presented. It is discussed how A‐site cations can change the crystal structure and improve the crystal quality, and how the A‐site cation regulates the bandgap, enhances stability, and promotes effective charge transport. Further, synthesis strategy is presented to regulate the A‐site cation. Subsequently, the applications of A‐site cation‐regulated LHP materials in solar cells, light‐emitting diodes, photodetectors, and lasers are introduced. Finally, challenges that must be overcome to further improve the properties and stability of LHP materials via A‐site cation engineering are highlighted.

Abstract:As the race towards higher efficiency for inorganic/organic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is becoming highly competitive, a design scheme to maximize carrier transport towards higher power efficiency has been urgently demanded. Here, we unravel a hidden role of A-site cation of PSCs in carrier transport which has been largely neglected, i.e., tuning the Frohlich electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling of longitudinal optical (LO) phonon by A-site cations. The key for steering Frohlich polaron is to control the interaction strength and the number of proton (or lithium) coordination to halide ion. The coordination to I alleviates electron-phonon scattering by either decreasing the Born effective charge or absorbing the LO motion of I. This novel principle discloses lower electron-phonon coupling by several promising organic cations including hydroxyl-ammonium cation (NH$_3$OH$^+$) and possibly Li$^+$ solvating methylamine (Li$^+$NH$_2$CH$_3$) than methyl-ammonium cation. A new perspective on the role of A-site cation could help in improving power efficiency and accelerating the application of PSCs.

Abstract:The next-generation hot-carrier solar cells, which can overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit by harvesting excess energy from hot carriers, are receiving increasing attention. Lead halide perovskite (LHP) materials are considered as promising candidates due to their exceptional photovoltaic properties, good stability and low cost. The cooling rate of hot carriers is a key parameter influencing the performance of hot-carrier solar cells. In this work, we successfully detected hot carrier dynamics in operando LHP devices using the two-pulse photovoltage correlation technique. To enhance the signal-to-noise ratio, we applied the delay-time modulation method instead of the traditional power modulation. This advancement allowed us to detect the intraband hot carrier cooling time for the organic LHP CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 , as short as 0.21 ps. In comparison, the inorganic Cs-based LHP CsPbBr 3 exhibited a longer cooling time, around 0.59 ps, due to different phonon contributions. These results provide us new insights for the optimal design of hot-carrier solar cells and highlight the potential of LHP materials in advancing solar cell technology.

Abstract:Halide perovskites (HPs) are a well-known class of mixed electronic and ionic conductors with diverse applications in optoelectronic devices. The simultaneous transport of ionic and electronic carriers has beneficial and detrimental effects depending on the intended applications. There is an extensive understanding of the charge transport characteristics in HPs since the phenomenon is of applied relevance. However, considering that several applications use compositions containing mixed cations, a deeper understanding of how the degree of substitution and the characteristics of the substituent cations affect the charge transport characteristics is needed. To this end, we experimentally studied the ionic conductivity (σion), current–voltage hysteresis (J–E hysteresis), mobility (μe) and density (ne) of electronic carriers, and bandgap energies (Eg) of up to 24 compositions of methylammonium lead iodide partially substituted with guanidinium and formamidinium. The results indicate that σion, J–E hysteresis, and μe decrease with the degree of substitution, with the J–E hysteresis being smaller the larger size of the substituent cation. At the same time, σion appears to be lower in compositions with equimolar substituents, in which the entropy of mixing is maximum. On the other hand, a slight increase in ne was observed with the substitution degree, showing highest values for FA+-rich compositions, where Eg is the lowest. The results advance the understanding of how it is possible to customize charge transport properties through the rational design of compositions in HPs.

Tailoring hot carrier cooling and recombination dynamics of mixed halide perovskite by incorporating Au@CZTS core–shell nanocrystal

Abstract:Organic–inorganic halide perovskite has emerged as the front-runner of absorber materials for highly efficient solar cell in recent years. The incorporation of metallic (Au, Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) within the perovskite contributes to the effective tuning of their optoelectronic properties via enhancing the channels of solar energy transfer and promoting carrier transport. Placing a dielectric shell over the metal NP further enhances the carrier mobility and reduces the carrier recombination in the semiconductor material. Here, we have extensively investigated the effect of the Au@CZTS core–shell nanocrystal (NC) on hot carrier (HC) cooling dynamics and excited carrier recombination dynamics in bulk MAPbI3−XClX perovskite using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with a temporal and spectral resolution of 120 fs and 0.8 nm respectively. The HC cooling dynamics indicates the formation of longitudinal optical (LO) phonons within the first 0.6 ps and a delayed conversion of LO phonons to longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons from 8 ps to 15.9 ps due to the incorporation of the Au@CZTS core–shell NC in bulk perovskite. Further, the investigation of carrier recombination dynamics shows that at a fixed pump fluence of 3.19 μJ cm−2 the rate constants decrease nearly 1 order of magnitude for (a) Auger recombination (from 1.2 × 10−32 cm6 s−1 to 1.7 × 10−34 cm6 s−1), (b) band-to-band recombination (from 8 × 10−14 cm3 s−1 to 8 × 10−15 cm3 s−1) and (c) trap state recombination (from 5.5 × 108 μs−1 to 5 × 107μs−1) after the modification of bulk perovskite by Au@CZTS core–shell NC. Delayed conversion of LO phonons to LA phonons confirms the presence of an enhanced 'hot phonon bottleneck' effect in modified bulk perovskite. Lowering of the recombination rate constants provides an opportunity for developing high-performance perovskite-based photovoltaics.

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites solar cells have attracted extensive interest because of their outstanding properties, including an optimal band gap, high carrier mobility, and excellent optoelectronic merits. We study the electronic and crystal structural properties of hybrid organic-inorganic halide APbX3 (A = Cs, methylammonium (MA), formamidinium (FA), X = I, Br) perovskites using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. We find that halide atoms and A-site cations strongly affect their structural and electronic properties. The radius of a halide atom and the size of an organic molecule determine their lattice parameters and bond length. A relatively large halide atom can increase the value of the lattice parameters (a and b). Meanwhile, the electronic properties (band gap & carrier effective mass) of the Pb-based hybrid halide APbX3 can be effectively modified by adopting appropriate A- and X-site atoms or organic sections. We predict that HOIPs may have outstanding potential in solar light harvesting with promoted power conversion efficiency due to a tunable band gap and excellent electronic properties.

Abstract:The A cation in ABX 3 organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (OLHPs) was conventionally believed to hardly affect their optoelectronic properties. However, more recent developments have unraveled the critical role of the A cation in the regulation of the physicochemical and optoelectronic properties of OLHPs. We review the important breakthroughs enabled by the versatility of the A cation and highlight potential opportunities and unanswered questions related to the A cation in OLHPs.

Abstract:A deep understanding of the effect of the A‐site cation cross‐exchange on the hot‐carrier relaxation dynamics in perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) has profound implications on the further development of disruptive photovoltaic technologies. In this study, we investigated the hot carrier cooling kinetics of pure FAPbI3, MAPbI3, CsPbI3 and alloyed FA0.5MA0.5PbI3, FA0.5Cs0.5PbI3, and MA0.5Cs0.5PbI3 QDs using ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. The lifetimes of the initial fast cooling stage (<1 ps) of all the organic cation‐containing PQDs were shorter than those of the CsPbI3 QDs, as verified by the electron‐phonon coupling strength extracted from the temperature‐dependent photoluminescence spectra. The lifetimes of the slow cooling stage of the alloyed PQDs were longer under illumination greater than 1 sun, which was ascribed to the introduction of co‐vibrational optical phonon modes in the alloyed PQDs. This facilitated efficient acoustic phonon upconversion and enhanced the hot‐phonon bottleneck effect, as demonstrated by first‐principles calculations. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Abstract Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have attracted tremendous attention for optoelectronic applications. The long photocarrier lifetime and moderate carrier mobility have been proposed as results of the large polaron formation in MHPs. However, it is challenging to measure the effective mass and carrier scattering parameters of the photogenerated large polarons in the ultrafast carrier recombination dynamics. Here, we show, in a one-step spectroscopic method, that the optical-pump and terahertz-electromagnetic probe (OPTP) technique allows us to access the nature of interplay of photoexcited unbound charge carriers and optical phonons in polycrystalline CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ) of about 10 μm grain size. Firstly, we demonstrate a direct spectral evidence of the large polarons in polycrystalline MAPbI 3 . Using the Drude–Smith–Lorentz model along with the Frӧhlich-type electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, we determine the effective mass and scattering parameters of photogenerated polaronic carriers. We discover that the resulting moderate polaronic carrier mobility is mainly influenced by the enhanced carrier scattering, rather than the polaron mass enhancement. While, the formation of large polarons in MAPbI 3 polycrystalline grains results in a long charge carrier lifetime at room temperature. Our results provide crucial information about the photo-physics of MAPbI 3 and are indispensable for optoelectronic device development with better performance.

Abstract:Echoing the roaring success of their bulk counterparts, nano-objects built from organolead halide perovskites (OLHP) present bright prospects for surpassing the performances of their conventional organic and inorganic analogues in photodriven technologies. Unraveling the photoinduced charge dynamics is essential for optimizing the optoelectronic functionalities. However, mapping the carrier-lattice interactions remains challenging, owing to their manifestations on multiple length scales and time scales. By correlating ultrafast time-resolved optical and X-ray absorption measurements, this work reveals the photoinduced formation of strong-coupling polarons in CH3NH3PbBr3 nanoparticles. Such polarons originate from the self-trapping of electrons in the Coulombic field caused by the displaced inorganic nuclei and the oriented organic cations. The transient structural change detected at the Pb L-3 X-ray absorption edge is well-captured by a distortion with average bond elongation in the [PbBr6](2-) motif. General implications for designing novel OLHP nanomaterials targeting the active utilization of these quasi-particles are outlined.

Abstract:Slow hot carrier cooling in halide perovskites holds the key to the development of hot carrier (HC) perovskite solar cells. For accurate modeling and pragmatic design of HC materials and devices, it is essential that HC temperatures are reliably determined. A common approach involves fitting the high-energy tail of the main photobleaching peak in a transient absorption spectrum with a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. However, this approach is problematic because of complications from the overlap of several photophysical phenomena and a lack of consensus in the community on the fitting procedures. Herein, we propose a simple approach that circumvents these challenges. Through tracking the broadband spectral evolution and accounting for bandgap renormalization and spectral line width broadening effects, our method extracts not only accurate and consistent carrier temperatures but also other important parameters such as the quasi-Fermi levels, bandgap renormalization constant, <i>etc.</i> Establishing a reliable method for the carrier temperature determination is a step forward in the study of HCs for next-generation perovskite optoelectronics.
