Abstract:This paper aims to develop a rural energy system design framework and analyzes the techno-economic feasibility of potential hybrid energy systems (HES) for rural electrification of a village in district Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. At first, a comprehensive resource assessment is carried out. Subsequently, system size optimization and techno-economic viability is conducted using a standard software tool HOMER PRO to fulfil the peak-load demand. Due to the deficiency of wind power and biomass resources at the targeted site, the results indicate that a community power system based on solar PV as a primary energy source, batteries as a storage, diesel generator as a backup, and a time-constrained availability of national grid is the most feasible solution. Sensitivity analysis using macro-economic variables and derating factor of PV has been opted to ensure robustness and commercial applicability of the proposed HES. The study finds that levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) in grid-integrated systems (0.072$/kWh and 0.078$/kWh) is economical than the off-grid systems (0.145$/kWh and 0.167$/kWh). The obtained results indicate commercial efficacy of the grid-integrated configurations, where LCOE is lower than the existing government tariff. Most importantly, this hybrid energy system is capable of providing a 24/7 continuous electricity to the site under consideration.

Abstract:Expansion of modern power systems due to increasing energy demands face the challenges of grid reinforcement cost, size and complexity, transmission losses, and environmental factors. Placement of renewable energy sources (RES) based generation systems addresses these challenges. However, the size and placement location of RES-based system require optimization of installation and operational cost with better return on investment and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents an optimized solution for RES-based generation system to be installed with the existing power system of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) region that is facing power shortfall and load shedding. The weather and climate data from NASA and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have been used and various models of on-grid hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) are compared to highlight their techno-economic benefits. An optimal hybrid photovoltaic, wind, and hydroelectric energy-based generation system is proposed with a significant reduction in cost of energy, net present cost, initial costs, and GHG emissions. Installation of the proposed hybrid RES-based generation system guarantees reduction in system power losses and line flows with an improved voltage profile of the system.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy can play a pivotal part in enhancing energy security and decreasing hazardous emissions in Pakistan. However, hydrogen energy can be sustainable and clean only if it is produced from renewable energy sources (RES). Therefore, this study conducts feasibility of six RES for the generation of hydrogen in Pakistan. RES evaluated in this study include wind, solar, biomass, municipal solid waste (MSW), geothermal, and micro-hydro. RES have been evaluated using Fuzzy Delphi, fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP), and environmental data envelopment analysis (DEA). Fuzzy Delphi finalizes criteria and sub-criteria. FAHP obtains relative weights of criteria considered for choosing the optimal RES. Environmental DEA measures relative efficiency of each RES using criteria weights as outputs, and RES-based electricity generation cost as input. The results revealed wind as the most efficient source of hydrogen production in Pakistan. Micro-hydro and Solar energy can also be used for hydrogen production. Biomass, MSW, and geothermal achieved less efficiency scores and therefore are not suggested at present.

Abstract:This research work proposed an optimal hybrid microgrid design for Riphah International University (RIU), Lahore, Pakistan, that ensures a continuous and affordable energy supply by harnessing reliable energy sources. The design factors include the various considerations such as energy resource availability, environmental sustainability, and financial viability. The proposed hybrid renewable energy system integrates the national grid, solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, a battery bank, and a converter to fulfill the energy requirements of RIU. In order to develop the most efficient design, various factors are taken into account, including electrical load, solar irradiation, ambient temperature on campus, lifespan and efficiency of PV modules, degradation factor, cost considerations, battery longevity, energy prices from the national grid, occurrences of load shedding, and the environmental impact in terms of toxic emissions. The net present cost (NPC) factor is also considered to make the design more cost effective. The simulations conducted using HOMER Pro software yielded 932 possible solutions, among which the proposed hybrid microgrid design emerged as the most viable with an NPC of 0.483 million and 99.3% renewable energy utilization. The worst design, which utilized a national grid and diesel generator, resulted in an NPC of 1.89 million with 0% renewable energy integration. The proposed hybrid microgrid design among 932 models established by HOMER Pro software using PV connected to a national grid, and a storage system represents the most optimal solution for RIU Lahore Campus by considering all the necessary factors and requirements.

Abstract:This study proposed an off-grid PV-hydrogen energy system to electrify rural households in Balochistan, Pakistan. The system is designed, simulated, and optimized from a techno-economic perspective based on electric load profile, geographical locations, and meteorological data. The optimal configurations and cost of the system components, i.e., solar panel, fuel cell, electrolyzer, hydrogen tank, and converter, are obtained. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to analyze the effect of system components' cost, nominal discount rate and inflation rate, and load variation on COE and NPC. Robustness analysis is also carried out to confirm the technical reliability of the system. In addition, breakeven analysis is investigated to compare the cost of the grid extension scenario with the proposed energy system. The results revealed that the proposed energy system is economically feasible and technically reliable. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed system is compared with reported studies. Finally, based on the obtained results, suggestions have been provided for effective policy implications to suc-cessfully deploy the proposed energy system across the country.

Abstract:The energy production in Pakistan is highly dependent on fossil fuels. Consequently, the least grid power with maximal renewable energy must be utilized to meet load demand. It can only be accomplished by medium- and small-scaled power consumers through installing hybrid systems on their sites. The generated excess electricity can be injected into national grid through net metering (NM) for financial assistance. The main objective of study is to design grid-connected hybrid (PV–wind) microgrid system using NM facility. The site selected for proposed work is an academic building of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan. The meteorological data collected from NASA were placed into HOMER to evaluate availability of RE sources. The load profile of building was calculated to measure energy consumption for 24 h/day. The on-grid PV–wind hybrid system has been analyzed before and after using NM facility. The simulation results before NM have obtained NPC, COE, payback period and CO 2 as 125,158 /kWh, 2.86 years. and 20,175 kg/years, respectively. These same constraints by using NM facility have been estimated as 50,521 /kWh, 2.79 years and 14,733 kg/years, respectively. The NM strategy is most preferable due to its feasible outcomes and accomplishment of distinct energy demands adequately.

Abstract:This paper analyzes dynamic modeling for rural HPS to address GHG emissions' environmental impact on floods and climate change. The aim is to integrate renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, with traditional generators to mitigate emissions and enhance energy access in rural communities in Pakistan. The system is designed using a DC-DC converter, MPPT, LCL filter, and a DC-AC inverter. Utilizing software tools like PVsyst 7.4 and HOMER Pro-3.18.1, the study evaluates system sizing, energy consumption patterns, and optimization strategies tailored to site-specific data. The expected results include a reliable, environmentally friendly hybrid power system capable of providing consistent electricity to rural areas. The analysis of a connected load of 137.48 kWh/d and a peak load of 33.54 kW demonstrates the system's promise for reliable electricity with minimal environmental impact. The estimated capital cost of USD 102,310 and energy generation at USD 0.158 per unit underscores economic feasibility. Dynamic modeling and validation using HIL examine the system's behavior in response to variations in solar irradiance and temperature, offering insights into operational efficiency and reliability. The study concludes that the hybrid power system is scalable for rural energy access, which is a practical solution achieving a 100% renewable energy fraction, significantly contributing to emission reduction and promoting sustainable energy practices.

Abstract:In the face of escalating global energy demands and the unpredictable nature of renewable resources, the quest for sustainable and reliable power solutions has never been more pressing. Hybrid power systems, which integrate multiple energy sources, have emerged as a beacon of hope, particularly for remote and rural regions with limited or no connection to the national power grid. This study provides an in-depth analysis to determine the optimal hybrid energy system, considering diesel, wind, solar, and hydro sources, for a local load of 20 kW in the rural area of Bankhwar Utrar in Kalam, Pakistan. The study considered the energy profile for an entire year while the research was conducted from September to December 2022. Economic, technical, operational, and geographical parameters were evaluated during the system design and optimization. Eight distinct systems, derived from various source combinations, were designed. A multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) technique, considering power output, net present cost (NPC), the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions was employed to determine the most reliable and sustainable system for the specified location. The highest ranking optimal system comprised a hybrid of solar PV, wind turbine, hydro turbine, and battery bank. This system not only championed economic efficiency with an NPC of /kWh but also stood out as an environmental steward with zero GHG emissions. In stark contrast, the traditional system of the diesel generator and the PV/generator ranked last, both economically and environmentally, with NPCs of 397445, LCOEs of 0.36 /kWh, and GHG emissions of 86168 kg/year and 72097 kg/year, respectively.

Abstract:The industrial sector of Pakistan is currently facing severe load-shedding, which ultimately affects its unit production. The greater dependency on conventional energy resources (Thermal, Nuclear, etc.) results in higher production costs and environmental pollution. A sustainable, cost-effective, and environment-friendly solution can help the industrial growth of Pakistan. This article proposes an optimal hybrid energy system (HES) for the industrial sector of Pakistan to overcome the mentioned challenges. The proposed HES is developed in HOMER Pro. Three different energy cases (Case I: Existing energy system including a utility grid and diesel generator, Case II: On-grid Biogas system, and Case III: On-grid PV system with batteries) are considered for the Gourmet food Industry in the Sundar Industrial estate, Pakistan. The Load profile of the selected site was calculated through on-site visits and data provided by the designated utility grid feeder. The analysis shows that Case III is more effective than other cases, indicating reduced Net Present Cost (NPC), Cost of Energy (COE), and Operating Cost (OC) to 0.034/kWh, and $ 573,371/year respectively. Moreover, the On-grid PV system with batteries (Case III) provides an environmentally friendly solution by reducing 63.82% by and 62.22% . Comparing the sensitivity analysis for various grid sell-back prices ( 0.043/kWh, 0.09/kWh), Case III is more cost-effective than Case II. The revenue generation in Case III is 0.065/kWh, this indicates that installing optimal HES in industries will not only help in overall cost reduction but also support in mitigating environmental pollution and load shedding.

Abstract:This research article presents a comprehensive investigation into the design, optimization, and performance analysis of a hybrid stand-alone microgrid for an industrial facility in Iraq at coordinates 36.51 and 43.99. The system consists of photovoltaic (PV) modules, inverters, a battery energy storage system (BESS), a generator, and AC loads. Leveraging the capabilities of PVsyst version 7.3.1, HOMER Pro version 3.14.2 and SAM version 2022.11.21 software tools, this study assesses the feasibility and functionality of the hybrid stand-alone microgrid. In this study, PVsyst software is used for detailed designing and analysis of a PV plant, and the PVsyst design file is then used in HOMER Pro software to optimize and design the proposed hybrid stand-alone microgrid, and for detailed performance analysis SAM software is employed. This paper also investigates the impact of ground clearance and ground albedo on the annual generation of bifacial PV modules at various tilt angles. Key findings include a promising normalized production rate of 4.53 kWh/kWp/day with a performance ratio of 0.815 and annual energy production estimates of 84.31 MWh (P50), 79.57 MWh (P90), and 78.24 MWh (P95) for monofacial PV modules, highlighting the system's potential for renewable energy generation. Notably, this research demonstrates the hybrid stand-alone microgrid's capacity to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, saving approximately 1811.6 tons over a 30-year period, thus contributing to sustainability and environmental conservation goals. Additionally, this study reveals operational challenges during the winter months, necessitating generator support to meet load demands. The successful installation and experimental validation of the hybrid stand-alone microgrid underscore its practical viability and its role in advancing clean energy solutions. This research provides valuable insights into hybrid stand-alone microgrid design, emphasizing its importance in ensuring reliable power supply and environmental stewardship.

Abstract:Diesel generator-based energy systems (DGES) are often utilized for rural electrification, which is neither economical nor an eco-friendly choice. Also, fuel logistics in rural areas and uncertain varying prices of diesel are obstacles that make the DGES technically and economically unfeasible. Thus, a battery-assisted photovoltaic-fuel cell (PV-FC) green energy system (GES) is proposed to meet the energy demand of the rural community in Pakistan. 3E (energy, economic, and environmental) analyses are conducted to access the feasibility of GES in all three domains. The sensitivity analyses are performed to evaluate the effect of the most uncertain parameters on the economy of GES. In addition, the proposed GES is contrasted with DGES. It is investigated that the TNPC and COE of the proposed GES are 15% and 38.4% less expensive than DGES. The proposed GES contributes no emissions to the environment saving 384.47 tons/yr of greenhouse gas emissions as compared to DGES. Furthermore, no significant difference in the technical performance of both DGES and GES is observed. Hence, it is concluded that the proposed GES is financially, technically, and environmentally a feasible solution for rural electrification. Abstract:In the face of a significant power crisis, Bangladesh is turning towards renewable energy solutions, a move supported by the government's initiatives. This article presents the findings of a study conducted in a residential area of Pabna, Bangladesh, using HOMER (Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources) Pro software version 3.14.2. The study investigates the feasibility and efficiency of a grid-connected hybrid power system, combining photovoltaics (PV), a biomass generator, and wind energy. The simulation produced six competing solutions, each featuring a distinct combination of energy sources. Among the configurations analyzed, the grid-connected PV–biomass generator system emerged as the most cost-effective, exhibiting the lowest COE at USD 0.0232, a total net present cost (NPC) of USD 321,798.00, and an annual operating cost of USD 6060.59. The system presents a simple payback period of 9.25 years, highlighting its economic viability. Moreover, this hybrid model significantly reduces CO2 emissions to 78,721 kg/year, compared to the 257,093 kg/year emissions from a solely grid-connected system, highlighting its environmental benefits. Sensitivity analyses further reveal that the system's performance is highly dependent on solar irradiance, indicating that slight variations in solar input can significantly impact the system's output. This study underscores the potential of integrating multiple renewable energy sources to address the power crisis in Bangladesh, offering a sustainable and economically viable solution while also mitigating environmental impacts.

Residential Community Load Management Based on Optimal Design of Standalone HRES With Model Predictive Control

Abstract:Microgrids being an important entity in the distribution system, and to get their full advantages by incorporating maximum distributed generation, standalone hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs), being environmentally-safe and economically-efficient, are considered as the promising solution to electrify remote areas where the grid power is not available. In this work, a techno-economic investigation with an optimal design of HRES is presented to fulfill the domestic electricity need for a residential area of the Sherani district in the Province of Baluchistan, Pakistan. Nine case studies based on PV/wind/diesel/battery are analyzed based on net present cost (NPC), cost of energy (COE), and emission to decide the feasible solution. HOMER tool is utilized to accomplish modeling and simulation for economic analysis and optimal sizing. Simulation results demonstrated that HRES with PV-wind-battery is the most viable option for the specified area, and the optimal sizing of components are also obtained with $ 28,620 NPC and $ 0.311/kWh COE which shows 81.65 % reduction in cost and 100 % preserving in toxic emission while fulfilling 100 % energy demand with 67.3 % of excess energy. Furthermore, MATLAB/Simulink modeling for the optimally designed system is built for technical analysis while its effectiveness is proved by keeping dc and ac buses voltage constant, safe operating range of battery state of charge (SOC) with active power balance between HRES components, as well as efficient ac voltage quality, regardless of generation disturbances and load fluctuations. The output signal has total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.30 % as compared to 5.44 % with the conventional control scheme. The novelty lies in the sequential application of both HOMER and MATLAB simulations of the proposed HRES model and validation of the pro-osition for the studied area; by using and implementing model predictive control (MPC) of a reconfigurable inverter.

Abstract:Given the significant impact of the UN 2015 agenda on sustainable development, the search for eco-friendly and efficient energy solutions has intensified. The renewable based hybrid systems have emerged as feasible solution in this context. This paper explores the potential of utilizing a hybrid energy system (HES) from a distinctive perspective — addressing the challenges of load shedding at the distribution level. The HES configuration in this investigation includes photovoltaic (PV) array, wind turbines (WT), battery storage unit (BSU) and diesel generator system. The research involves simulations, optimization, and sensitivity analysis for a residential community in the southwestern part of Pakistan, which frequently experiences load shedding. Grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) is applied to simultaneously minimize the levelized electricity cost (LEC), payback period (PBP), and loss of power supply probability (LPSP). Simulations compare different HES configurations based on the estimation of local renewable energy potential and the load shedding schedule of the utility company. The optimal solution, with $N_{PV}=110$ , $N_{WT}=2$ , and $N_{BSU}=16$ , was selected, resulting in a minimum LEC of 6.64 cents/kWh and a PBP of 7.4 years. These results are validated using the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). The performance of HES is benchmarked against conventional solutions, such as standalone diesel generators, battery-based uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and combinations of generators and UPS. The findings demonstrate the significant superiority of HES over conventional solutions in terms of reduced LEC, shorter PBP and reduced carbon emissions. Finally, the sensitivity analysis examines the impact of varying component prices, feed-in tariff rates, meteorological conditions, and load demand variations on the LEC and PBP of the HES.

Abstract:The present study aims to introduce and check the feasibility of the solar photovoltaic-fuel cell hybrid system in a developing country. Hybrid system limitations such as: unreliability and environmentally unfriendliness have convinced the researchers to look for a better, reliable, efficient, and environmentally benign combination with solar photovoltaic and fuel cell, because it possesses required properties. The novelty of the current study is the investigation of electric utilization of photovoltaic and fuel cell hybrid model in urban, hot and humid cities of country. Additionally, energy, economic and environmental analyses have been done. The evaluation tool used in the present study is the system advisor model, while matrix laboratory is used for energy load design. The environmental analysis via expressed equations is based on system consumptions and emissions. The upshots show that from an energy, economic and environmental perspective, the solar photovoltaic-fuel cell system is a step towards contributing to the sustainable development goal 7 and 11 because 1.927 Gigagram/year of carbon dioxide emissions are being reduced due to hybrid system. The current hybrid system exhibits the levelized cost of electricity as 0.073 dollars/kWh, while the net present value of the system is 1.86 million dollars. Systems' levelized cost of electricity is less than the tariff rate of the country. Specifically, the Paris Agreement article 9 gives huge significance to this research project in context of developed and underdeveloped countries. Abstract:The Global Climate Risk Index ranks Pakistan as the fifth most vulnerable nation in the world because of its climate conditions. Further, 28% of Pakistan's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are contributed by the transport sector. Renewable energy resources based on solar photovoltaics and wind turbines, along with hydrogen as a clean energy storage medium, are thought to be the most prominent and promising means of reducing these emissions from the transportation sector. This study aims to conduct a techno-economic viability assessment for an off-grid PV-wind-hydrogen storage-based EV charging station in order to determine the optimal configuration that can satisfy the necessary load demand. For the purpose of the simulation and optimization process, HOMER Pro software is used. Moreover, this research work has performed a comparative analysis among four cities of Pakistan to determine the influence of geographical and climate factors on energy generation (MWh), size (MW), and cost parameters (i.e., NPC and COE) of the charging station. For the purpose of in-depth analysis, two cases are considered in which load demand is kept the same and the designed system for Hyderabad city is considered as a "base system". In case 1, the objective is to determine the variation in annual renewable energy generation keeping the same system size in all four cities. In case 2, the variation in energy generation is minimized near the base value to determine the impact on size and cost parameters. The results revealed that the lowest NPC and COE occur in Peshawar, followed by Quetta, Lahore, and Hyderabad. For Hyderabad, when the outcomes of cases 1 and 2 were compared, its NPC and COE stayed the same due to the base case, with values of 21 M /kWh, respectively. Whereas, in Peshawar, the value of NPC dropped from 18 M while the value of COE decreased from 0.485 /kWh. The research findings provide the possible implications of distinct geographical locations and climate conditions upon renewable energy generation and its further influence on system size and economic parameters. The outcomes of this research will be insightful for policymakers and stakeholders while planning and designing an off-grid EV charging station infrastructure.

Abstract:More than a billion people do not have access o electricity, so it is important to find ways to generate power close to where they live. Hybrid energy systems can be made and used to generate electricity for homes and businesses that are not connected to national or regional power grids. Hybrid energy systems yield greater environmental and economic returns than stand-alone geothermal, solar, wind, or bigenerational systems. The goal of this paper is to simulate a hybrid power system for COMSATS University in Islamabad that is both technically and economically feasible and plays a big part to support clean energy production and safeguard the environment from toxic emissions. This paper provides a case study of COMSATS University Islamabad. The results showed that a hybrid system with a grid and a wind turbine that produced 1 MWh/yr was the best option. This study also provides a cost summary of PV panels, batteries, diesel generators, capital value, replacement, operation and maintenance (OM), fuel cost, and salvage value in dollars. In this study, a hybrid power system is designed that can provide us with a detailed analysis of power generation and consumption for the case study.

Abstract:Hybrid renewable energy sources are sustainable and eco-friendly and challenge the alternative sources of conventional energy production facilities. Pakistan's present energy dilemma is a serious impediment to its economic progress. This paper proposes a techno-economic analysis of commercial-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems for commercial agricultural farms in Punjab, Pakistan. A survey was conducted to gather the load data of the farms from major cities of north, center, and south Punjab. For the PV system design, the K-means approach was used to cluster data from 93 farmers into nine clusters with similar electrical consumption. A complete technical, economic, and environmental study is undertaken of the PV systems deployed in five selected cities. The most practical locations are Attock and Multan, which have the lowest Levelized Cost of Energy at 5.52 and 5.37 cents/kWh, respectively. PV installations are nevertheless technically, economically, and environmentally feasible for all cities. Throughout its lifespan, the planned PV system has the potential for Faisalabad and Chiniot to minimize 154 metric tons of emissions, resulting in a greener environment.

Abstract:Microgrids are designed to utilize renewable energy resources (RER) that are revolutionary choices in reducing the environmental effect while producing electricity. The RER intermittency poses technical and economic challenges for the microgrid systems that can be overcome by utilizing the full potential of hybrid energy storage systems (HESS). A microgrid comprising of a solar photovoltaic panel, wind turbine, lead-acid battery, electrolyzer, fuel cell, and hydrogen (H ) tank is considered for techno-economic feasibility and environmental impact assessment on a grid integration scenario. Mathematical functions are utilized to model the components for estimating annual hourly renewable generation and energy storage behavior. The load consumption model for 50 homes is generated using Gaussian distribution to incorporate the uncertainty. Optimal sizing of the microgrid components is determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to minimize the upfront installation cost and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Different energy storage penetration scenarios, e.g., 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% for the microgrid system, are considered where 100% penetration level stands for maintaining the load demand using the available resources without depending on the grid energy supply. The lowest LCOE is found between 0.06 /kWh, and the highest annual GHG is reduced to half compared to the grid emission. GHG is imposed around 62.14 (tCO e/yr) - 73.57 (tCO e/yr) for Madrid and Seville, respectively.
