Abstract:The fundamental energy gap of a periodic solid distinguishes insulators from metals and characterizes low-energy single-electron excitations. However, the gap in the band structure of the exact multiplicative Kohn-Sham (KS) potential substantially underestimates the fundamental gap, a major limitation of KS density-functional theory. Here, we give a simple proof of a theorem: In generalized KS theory (GKS), the band gap of an extended system equals the fundamental gap for the approximate functional if the GKS potential operator is continuous and the density change is delocalized when an electron or hole is added. Our theorem explains how GKS band gaps from metageneralized gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) and hybrid functionals can be more realistic than those from GGAs or even from the exact KS potential. The theorem also follows from earlier work. The band edges in the GKS one-electron spectrum are also related to measurable energies. A linear chain of hydrogen molecules, solid aluminum arsenide, and solid argon provide numerical illustrations.
Self-Consistent Solution Of Kohn-Sham Equation By Real-Space Finite-Difference Method

Abstract:Electronic-structure calculations play a fundamental role in predicting important physical (optical, electrical, etc) properties of condensed matter. Based on density functional theory (DFT), Kohn-Sham (KS) equation replaces the interacting many-body (electrons) problem by an equivalent set of self-consistent single-particle equations. Different from well-adopted basis set approach, we present a real-space finite-difference method to discretize the KS equation where the Laplacian operator is represented by high-order differences. After spatial discretization, a derived nonlinear eigenvalue problem is solved by a self-consistent field (SCF) iteration scheme with the update of electron density and potentials. In spite of the simplicity and versatility of the finite-difference method, one has to perform large-scale calculations of both eigenvalue and electrostatic problems at each iteration step. For eigenvalue problems, we minimize the Rayleigh quotients by the conjugate gradient method; and find minimum eigenvalues of interest through subspace diagonalization without Gram-Schmidt procedure. For obtaining electrostatic potentials, we use Dirichlet boundary condition to truncate the computational domain after inserting electron density and Gaussian compensating charge density together into Poisson's equation. Then a preconditioned Krylov subspace solver is employed to solve the Poisson's equation. A three-dimensional quantum dot with few spin-polarized electrons (each electron has spin up) is simulated by the real-space DFT incorporating local spin density (LSD) approximation. Wave function, electron density, eigen-energy, and total energy are calculated and compared to published results. The real-space finite-difference method produces reliable simulation results with a high computational efficiency. This work is fundamentally important to quantum-mechanical ab-initio calculation.
Electrostatic considerations affecting the calculated HOMO-LUMO gap in protein molecules

Abstract:A detailed study of energy differences between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO-LUMO gaps) in protein systems and water clusters is presented. Recent work questioning the applicability of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory to proteins and large water clusters (E. Rudberg, J. Phys.: Condens. Mat. 2012, 24, 072202) has demonstrated vanishing HOMO-LUMO gaps for these systems, which is generally attributed to the treatment of exchange in the functional used. The present work shows that the vanishing gap is, in fact, an electrostatic artefact of the method used to prepare the system. Practical solutions for ensuring the gap is maintained when the system size is increased are demonstrated. This work has important implications for the use of large-scale density-functional theory in biomolecular systems, particularly in the simulation of photoemission, optical absorption and electronic transport, all of which depend critically on differences between energies of molecular orbitals.

Ionization Potentials and Fundamental Gaps in Atomic Systems from the Ensemble-DFT Approach

Abstract:Calculations in Kohn-Sham density functional theory crucially rely on high-quality approximations for the exchange-correlation (xc) functional. Standard local and semi-local approximations fail to predict the ionization potential (IP) and the fundamental gap, departing from the Kohn-Sham orbital energies, due to the deviation of the total energy from piecewise-linearity and the absence of the derivative discontinuity. The ensemble generalization procedure introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 126403 (2013) restores, to a large extent, these features in any approximate xc functional and improves its ability to predict the IP and the fundamental gap with negligible additional computational effort. In this work we perform an extensive study of atoms and first ions across the Periodic Table, generalizing the local spin-density and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof approximations. By applying the ensemble generalization to a variety of systems, with s-, p- and d-character, we assess the accuracy of the method and identify important trends. In particular, we find that the accuracy of our approach heavily depends on the character of the frontier orbitals: when d-orbitals are involved, the performance is far less accurate. Possible sources of error are discussed and ways for further improvement are outlined.

Abstract: Kohn-Sham DFT with optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (RSH) functionals provides accurate and nonempirical fundamental gaps for a wide variety of finite-size systems. The standard tuning procedure relies on calculation of total energies of charged systems and thus cannot be applied to periodic solids. Here, we develop a framework for tuning the range separation parameter that can be used for periodic and open boundary conditions. The basic idea is to choose the range parameter that results in a stationary point where the fundamental gap obtained by RSH matches the gap obtained from a G0W0 over RSH calculation. The proposed framework is therefore analogous to eigenvalue self-consistent GW (scGW). We assess the method for various solids and obtain very good agreement with scGW results.

Abstract:We model the Hartree-exchange-correlation potential of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory adopting a novel strategy inspired by the strictly-correlated-electrons limit and relying on the exact decomposition of the potential based on the exact factorization formalism. Starting with accurate density and conditional potential for a one-dimensional model of a stretched heteronuclear molecule, we provide a proof-of-principle example of an approximation that accurately reproduces the step of the exact Kohn-Sham potential without resorting to the Kohn-Sham orbitals, virtual or occupied. We also test our strategy using the approximate conditional potentials corresponding to the strictly-correlated-electron and the exact-exchange functionals. The results are encouraging in that the initial approximations are modified in the qualitatively correct way: decreasing correlation in the former and increasing it in the latter.

Abstract:In density functional theory the exchange-correlation (XC) energy functional can be defined exactly through the coupling-constant ($\lambda$) averaged XC hole $\bar{n}_\text{xc}(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{r}')$, representing the probability depletion of finding an electron at $\mathbf{r}$ due to an electron at $\mathbf{r}$. Accurate knowledge of $\bar{n}_\text{xc}(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{r}')$ has been crucial for developing various XC energy density functional approximations and understanding their performance for real molecules and materials. However, there are very few systems for which accurate XC holes have been calculated, since this requires evaluating the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices for a reference wave function over a range of $\lambda$ whilst the electron density remains fixed at the physical ($\lambda=1$) density. Although the coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) method can yield exact results for a two-electron system in the complete basis set limit, it cannot capture the electron-electron cusp with commonly used finite basis sets. In this study, focusing on the Hooke's atom as a two-electron model system for which certain analytic solutions are known, we examine the effect of this cusp error on the XC hole calculated using CCSD. The Lieb functional is calculated at a range of coupling constants to determine the $\lambda$-integrated XC hole. Our results indicate that, for the Hooke's atoms, the error introduced by the description of the electron-electron cusp using Gaussian basis sets at the CCSD level is negligible compared to the basis set incompleteness error. The system-, angle- and coupling-constant-averaged XC hole is calculated using the same approach and provides a benchmark against which the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) and local density approximation (LDA) XC hole models are assessed.

Abstract:Excited state dynamics play a critical role across a broad range of scientific fields. Importantly, the highly non-equilibrium nature of the states generated by photoexcitation means that excited state simulations should usually include an accurate description of the coupled electronic-nuclear motion, which often requires solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). One of the biggest challenges for these simulations is the requirement to calculate the PES over which the nuclei evolve. An effective approach for addressing this challenge is to use the approximate linear vibronic coupling (LVC) Hamiltonian, which enables a model potential to be parameterised using relatively few quantum chemistry calculations. However, this approach is only valid provided there are no large amplitude motions in the excited state dynamics. In this paper we introduce and deploy a metric, the global anharmonicity parameter (GAP), which can be used to assess the accuracy of an LVC potential. Following its derivation, we illustrate its utility by applying it to three molecules exhibiting different rigidity in their excited states.
Spin gaps and spin-flip energies in density-functional theory

Abstract:Energy gaps are crucial aspects of the electronic structure of finite and extended systems. Whereas much is known about how to define and calculate charge gaps in density-functional theory (DFT), and about the relation between these gaps and derivative discontinuities of the exchange-correlation functional, much less is know about spin gaps. In this paper we give density-functional definitions of spin-conserving gaps, spin-flip gaps and the spin stiffness in terms of many-body energies and in terms of single-particle (Kohn-Sham) energies. Our definitions are as analogous as possible to those commonly made in the charge case, but important differences between spin and charge gaps emerge already on the single-particle level because unlike the fundamental charge gap spin gaps involve excited-state energies. Kohn-Sham and many-body spin gaps are predicted to differ, and the difference is related to derivative discontinuities that are similar to, but distinct from, those usually considered in the case of charge gaps. Both ensemble DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) can be used to calculate these spin discontinuities from a suitable functional. We illustrate our findings by evaluating our definitions for the Lithium atom, for which we calculate spin gaps and spin discontinuities by making use of near-exact Kohn-Sham eigenvalues and, independently, from the single-pole approximation to TDDFT. The many-body corrections to the Kohn-Sham spin gaps are found to be negative, i.e., single particle calculations tend to overestimate spin gaps while they underestimate charge gaps.

Abstract:We consider a neutral bosonic molecule in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation without spin and assume the physically obvious assertion that a neutral molecule prefers to break into smaller neutral clusters. We prove the existence of a global in space/uniform spectral gap between the ground state and first excited state energies. To do so, we improve upon previous results using a different tool, the time-independent Feshbach-Schur map.

Higher-order gap ratios of singular values in open quantum systems

Abstract:Understanding open quantum systems using information encoded in its complex eigenvalues has been a subject of growing interest. In this paper, we study higher-order gap ratios of the singular values of generic open quantum systems. We show that $k$-th order gap ratio of the singular values of an open quantum system can be connected to the nearest-neighbor spacing ratio of positions of classical particles of a harmonically confined log-gas with inverse temperature $\beta'(k)$ where $\beta'(k)$ is an analytical function that depends on $k$ and the Dyson's index $\beta=1,2,$ and $4$ that characterizes the properties of the associated Hermitized matrix. Our findings are crucial not only for understanding long-range correlations between the eigenvalues but also provide an excellent way of distinguishing different symmetry classes in an open quantum system. To highlight the universality of our findings, we demonstrate the higher-order gap ratios using different platforms such as non-Hermitian random matrices, random dissipative Liouvillians, Hamiltonians coupled to a Markovian bath, and Hamiltonians with in-built non-Hermiticity.

The charge gap is greater than the neutral gap in fractional quantum Hall systems

Abstract:Past studies of fractional quantum Hall systems have found that the charge gap dominates the neutral gap for all relevant parameter choices. We report a wide-ranging proof that this domination is in fact a universal property of any Hamiltonian that satisfies a few simple structural properties: translation-invariance, charge conservation, dipole conservation, and a fractionally filled ground state. The result applies to both fermions and bosons. Our main tool is a new mathematical scheme, the gap comparison method, which provides a sequence of inequalities that relate the spectral gaps in successive particle number sectors. Our finding sheds new light on dipole conservation's profound effects on many-body physics.

Abstract:We evaluate the accuracy of electron densities and quasiparticle energy gaps given by hybrid functionals by directly comparing these to the exact quantities obtained from solving the many-electron Schrodinger equation. We determine the admixture of Hartree-Fock exchange to approximate exchange-correlation in our hybrid functional via one of several physically justified constraints, including the generalized Koopmans' theorem. We find that hybrid functionals yield strikingly accurate electron densities and gaps in both exchange-dominated and correlated systems. We also discuss the role of the screened Fock operator in the success of hybrid functionals.

Abstract:Koopmans' theorem implies that the Hartree-Fock quasiparticle gap in a closed-shell system is equal to its single-particle energy gap. In this work, the theorem is generalized to optical transitions in the Hubbard model of graphene nanodots. Based on systematic configuration interaction calculations, it is proposed that the optical gap of a closed-shell graphene system within the Hubbard model is equal to its tight-binding single-particle energy gap in the absence of electron correlation. In these systems, the quasiparticle energy gap and exciton binding energy are found to be dominated by the long-range Coulomb interaction, and thus, both become small when only on-site Hubbard interactions are present. Moreover, the contributions of the quasiparticle and excitonic effects to the optical gap are revealed to nearly cancel each other, which results in an unexpected overlap of the optical and single-particle gaps of the graphene systems. Density functional theory beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation: Exact mapping onto an electronically non-interacting Kohn-Sham molecule

Abstract:This work presents an alternative, general, and in-principle exact extension of electronic Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) to the fully quantum-mechanical molecular problem. Unlike in existing multi-component or exact-factorization-based DFTs of electrons and nuclei, both nuclear and electronic densities are mapped onto a fictitious electronically non-interacting molecule (referred to as KS molecule), where the electrons still interact with the nuclei. Moreover, in the present molecular KS-DFT, no assumption is made about the mathematical form (exactly factorized or not) of the molecular wavefunction. By expanding the KS molecular wavefunction à la Born-Huang, we obtain a self-consistent set of "KS beyond Born-Oppenheimer" electronic equations coupled to nuclear equations that describe nuclei interacting among themselves and with non-interacting electrons. An exact adiabatic connection formula is derived for the Hartree-exchange-correlation energy of the electrons within the molecule and, on that basis, a practical adiabatic density-functional approximation is proposed and discussed.

A Hierarchy of Spectral Gap Certificates for Frustration-Free Spin Systems

Abstract:Estimating spectral gaps of quantum many-body Hamiltonians is a highly challenging computational task, even under assumptions of locality and translation-invariance. Yet, the quest for rigorous gap certificates is motivated by their broad applicability, ranging from many-body physics to quantum computing and classical sampling techniques. Here we present a general method for obtaining lower bounds on the spectral gap of frustration-free quantum Hamiltonians in the thermodynamic limit. We formulate the gap certification problem as a hierarchy of optimization problems (semidefinite programs) in which the certificate -- a proof of a lower bound on the gap -- is improved with increasing levels. Our approach encompasses existing finite-size methods, such as Knabe's bound and its subsequent improvements, as those appear as particular possible solutions in our optimization, which is thus guaranteed to either match or surpass them. We demonstrate the power of the method on one-dimensional spin-chain models where we observe an improvement by several orders of magnitude over existing finite size criteria in both the accuracy of the lower bound on the gap, as well as the range of parameters in which a gap is detected.

Abstract:Molecules with an inverted singlet-triplet gap (STG) between the first excited singlet and triplet states, for example, heptazine, have recently been reported and gained substantial attention since they violate the famous Hund's rule. Utilizing state-of-the-art high-level ab initio methods, the singlet-triplet gap vanishes and approaches zero from below whatever is improved in the theoretical description of the molecules: the basis set or the level of electron correlation. Seemingly, the phenomenon of inverted singlet-triplet gaps tends to vanish the closer we observe.

Abstract:The Hohenberg-Kohn (HK) theorem for interacting electrons is a cornerstone of modern electronic structure calculations. For a general quantum system, a HK-type Hamiltonian in the form of Hhk{gi}=Hint+ n-ary sumation igiOi$\hat {H}_{\rm hk}\lbrace g_i\rbrace =\hat {H}_{\rm int}+\sum_i g_i \hat O_i$ can always be defined, by grouping those terms with fixed or preknown coefficients into an internal part of the Hamiltonian Hint$\hat {H}_{\rm int}$, and factorizing the remaining as the superposition of a set of Hermitian operators {Oi}$\lbrace\hat {O}_i\rbrace$. It is asked whether the HK theorem can be extended to such a general setting, so that the ground-state expectation values of {Oi}$\lbrace\hat {O}_i\rbrace$ as the generalized density can in principle be used as the fundamental variables determining all the properties of the system. It is shown that the question can be addressed by the invertibility of generalized density correlation matrix (GDCM) defined with respect to the {Oi}$\lbrace\hat {O}_i\rbrace$ operators. This criterion is applied to several representative examples, including the quantum Ising dimer, frustration-free systems, N-level quantum systems and a fermionic Hubbard chain. It is suggested that for a finite-size system, finding an invertible GDCM under one single {gi}$\lbrace g_i\rbrace$ configuration is typically sufficient to establish the generic extensibility of the HK theorem in the entire parameter space.
