Abstract:Background: This study describes the presentation and initial management of anorectal malformation (ARM); evaluating the frequency, causes and consequences of late diagnosis. Methods: A prospective, population cohort study was undertaken for newly diagnosed ARMs in the UK and Ireland from 01/10/2015 and 30/09/2016. Follow-up was completed at one year. Data are presented as n (%), appropriate statistical methods used. Factors associated with late diagnosis; defined as: detection of ARM either following discharge or more than 72 h after birth were assessed with univariable logistic regression. Results: Twenty six centres reported on 174 cases, 158 of which were classified according to the type of malformation and 154 had completed surgical data. Overall, perineal fistula was the most commonly detected anomaly 43/158 (27%); of the 41 of these children undergoing surgery, 15 (37%) had a stoma formed. 21/154 (14%, CI95{9-20}) patients undergoing surgery experienced post-operative complications. Thirty-nine (22%) were diagnosed late and 12 (7%) were detected >30 days after birth. Factors associated with late diagnosis included female sex (OR 2.06; 1.0-4.26), having a visible perineal opening (OR 2.63; 1.21-5.67) and anomalies leading to visible meconium on the perineum (OR 18.74; 2.47-141.73). 56/174 (32%) had a diagnosis of VACTERL association (vertebral, anorectal, cardiac, tracheal, oesophageal, renal and limb); however, not all infants were investigated for commonly associated anomalies. 51/140 (36%) had a cardiac anomaly detected on echocardiogram. Conclusion: There is room for improvement within the care for infants born with ARM in the UK and Ireland. Upskilling those performing neonatal examination to allow timely diagnosis, instruction of universal screening for associated anomalies and further analysis of the factors leading to clinically unnecessary stoma formation are warranted. Abstract:Background Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are complex congenital anomalies. The corrective operation is demanding and schedulable. Based on complete national data, patterns of care have not been analyzed in Germany yet. Methods All cases with ARM were analyzed (1) at the time of birth and (2) during the hospital stay for the corrective operation, based on the national hospital discharge data (DRG statistics). Patient's comorbidities, treatment characteristics, hospital structures, and the outcome of corrective operations were analyzed with respect to the hospitals' caseload. Results From 2016 to 2021, 1,726 newborns with ARM were treated at the time of birth in 388 hospitals. Of these hospitals, 19% had neither a pediatric nor a pediatric surgical department. At least one additional congenital anomaly was present in 49% of cases and 7% of the newborns had a birthweight below 1,500 g. In all, 2,060 corrective operations for ARM were performed in 113 hospitals in the same time period. In 24.5% of cases, at least one major complication was documented. One-third of the operations were performed in 56 hospitals, one-third in 20 hospitals, and one-third in 10 hospitals with median annual case numbers of 2, 5, and 10, respectively. Hospitals with the highest caseload operated cloacal defects more often than hospitals with the lowest caseload (7 vs. 2%) and had more early complications than hospitals with the lowest caseload (30 vs. 21%). This difference was not statistically significant after risk adjustment. Conclusions Children with ARM are multimorbid. Early complications after corrective surgery are common. Considering the large number of hospitals with a very low caseload, centralization of care for the complex and elective corrective surgery for ARM remains a key issue for quality of care. Rectal atresia and rectal stenosis: the ARM-Net Consortium experience

Abstract:Purpose: To assess the number, characteristics, and functional short-, and midterm outcomes of patients with rectal atresia (RA) and stenosis (RS) in the ARM-Net registry. Methods: Patients with RA/RS were retrieved from the ARM-Net registry. Patient characteristics, associated anomalies, surgical approach, and functional bowel outcomes at 1 and 5-year follow-up were assessed. Results: The ARM-Net registry included 2619 patients, of whom 36 (1.3%) had RA/RS. Median age at follow-up was 7.0 years (IQR 2.3-9.0). Twenty-three patients (63.9%, RA n = 13, RS n = 10) had additional anomalies. PSARP was the most performed reconstructive surgery for both RA (n = 9) and RS (n = 6) patients. At 1-year follow-up, 11/24 patients with known data (45.8%, RA n = 5, RS n = 6) were constipated, of whom 9 required stool softeners and/or laxatives. At 5-year follow-up, 8/9 patients with known data (88.9%, RA n = 4, RS n = 4) were constipated, all requiring laxatives and/or enema. Conclusion: RA and RS are rare types of ARM, representing 1.3% of patients in the ARM-Net registry. Additional anomalies were present in majority of patients. Different surgical approaches were performed as reconstructive treatment, with constipation occurring in 46% and 89% of the patients at 1 and 5-year follow-up. However, accurate evaluation of long-term functional outcomes remains challenging.
Short and Long-Term Outcomes of PSARP versus LAARP and Single versus Staged Repair for Infants with High-Type Anorectal Malformations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: We aimed to compare among patients with high-type anorectal malformations (ARM): (i) short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) compared to classic posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) and (ii) the results of single-stage versus staged PSARP. Methods: Using a defined search strategy, two independent investigators systematically reviewed the English literature. PRISMA guidelines were followed, and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3. Results: Of 567 abstracts screened, 7 papers have been included (254 pts; 121 PSARP, 133 LAARP) in the first systematic review and meta-analysis. The length of hospitalization was shortened in LAARP versus PSARP (10.9 versus 14.4 days; p < 0.0001). PSARP and LAARP were comparable in terms of early postoperative complications (28.9% versus 24.7%; p = ns) and rectal prolapse (21.6% versus 17.5%; p = ns). At long-term follow-up, the presence of voluntary bowel movements (74.0% versus 83.5%; p = ns) and the incidence of soiling (45.5% versus 47.6%; p = ns) were similar in both PSARP and LAARP. Six papers (297 pts) were included in the second systematic review, with three comparative studies included in the meta-analysis (247 pts; 117 one-stage, 130 staged procedures). No significant difference in terms of presence of voluntary bowel movements after single-stage versus staged procedures (72.6% versus 67.3%; p = ns) has been detected. Conclusions: LAARP seems to be a safe and effective procedure, showing short- and long-term outcomes similar to PSARP. One-stage PSARP could be a safe alternative to the classic three-stage procedure, even for those infants with high-type ARM. Further and larger comparative studies would be needed to corroborate these partial existing data.

The European Reference Network eUROGEN for rare and complex urogenital conditions aimed to develop comprehensive guidelines for the management of ARM applicable on a European level. Methods The Dutch Quality Standard for ARM served as the basis for the development of guidelines. Literature was searched in Medline, Embase, and Cochrane. The ADAPTE method was utilized to incorporate the newest available evidence. A panel of 15 experts from seven European countries assessed currency, acceptability, and applicability of recommendations. Recommendations from the Dutch Quality Standard were adapted, adopted, or rejected and recommendations were formed considering the current evidence, expert opinion, and the European context. Results Surgical and medical treatment of ARM, postoperative instructions, toilet training, and management of fecal and urinary incontinence were addressed. Seven new studies were identified. The panel adapted 23 recommendations, adopted 3, and developed 8 de novo. The overall level of newly found evidence was considered low. Conclusion Treatment of ARM patients requires a multidisciplinary team and expertise about anatomical and surgical aspects of the disease, as well as long-term follow-up. This guideline offers recommendations for surgical and medical treatment of ARM and associated complications, according to the best available evidence and applicable on a European level. The availability of high-quality evidence was limited, and most recommendations were based on retrospective studies, case series, or expert opinion. Conclusion Patients with ARM and their families require highly specialized and comprehensive care from the prenatal period to adulthood. This guideline provides recommendations for a comprehensive diagnostic workup of children with ARM throughout their life that is applicable on a European level. Abstract:This paper describes a nested preview control by utilizing virtual plane for biped walking pattern generation including Center Of Gravity (COG) up-down motion. A preview control is effective to generate the biped walking patterns online. We proposed a biped walking pattern generation in our past research. In the method, biped walking patterns including COG up-down motions were generated by using the preview control with the virtual plane. However, some Zero-Moment Point (ZMP) errors between ZMP references and ZMP outputs remain. This is because prospective information of the ZMP reference cannot be transformed to the virtual plane in the method. In this paper, the ZMP errors are therefore decreased by using a nested structure. Besides, 3-Dimensional (3D) walking is achieved in an experiment.
The Role of Laparoscopy in Anorectal Malformations

Abstract:The use of laparoscopy in the minimally invasive management of anorectal malformations (ARMs) continues to evolve, although the principles guiding the anatomic surgical repair and clinical follow-up remain unchanged. In this review, we detail the advantages, indications, contraindications, complications, and issues unique to the minimally invasive approach to ARM. A comprehensive search of the PubMed and Embase databases was performed (2014-2018). Full-text screening, data abstraction, and quality appraisal were performed of articles describing the use of laparoscopy in ARM and cloaca. While new developments and approaches to ARM utilizing minimally invasive techniques and timing for surgical approach have been detailed, a unique complication profile involving greater risk of rectal prolapse and retention of a remnant of the original fistula are still consistently reported. Analysis of perioperative complications and long-term functional outcomes, including rates of fecal and urinary continence, are lacking. It is clear that patient selection for the choice of surgical approach based on precise preoperative delineation of the anatomy is the key. Adherence to the principles of ARM repair as well as application of operative/imaging adjuncts will yield the best technically safe minimally invasive approach to ARM. Continued efforts for standardized reporting and long-term follow-up are required.

Methods The Dutch Quality Standard for ARM served as the foundation for the development of guidelines applicable on a European level. Literature was searched in Medline, Embase, and Cochrane. The ADAPTE method was utilized to incorporate the newest available evidence. A panel of 15 experts from 7 European countries assessed currency, acceptability, and applicability of recommendations. Recommendations from the Dutch Quality Standard were adapted, adopted, or rejected and recommendations were formed considering the current evidence and/or expert consensus. Results Lifelong follow-up, integration, and transition of care were assessed. A total of eight new studies were identified. The panel adapted 18 recommendations, adopted 6, and developed 6 de novo. Overall, the level of evidence was considered low. Conclusion Successful lifelong follow-up and transition of care require a dedicated team of pediatric and adult specialist and an individually tailored patient-centered approach. This guideline summarizes the best available evidence on follow-up of ARM patients and provides guidance for the development of structured transition programs. Characteristics of Anorectal Malformations in Children at the United States-Mexico Border: A 3-Year Study

Abstract:Background: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are a group of congenital malformations affecting the lower gastrointestinal, urogenital, and/or gynecological systems. They occur in approximately 1 in 5000 live births, with a slight male predominance. ARMs can appear in isolation or in association with other anomalies. The literature contains little information about the characteristics of ARMs in United States Hispanic populations. Methods: An institutional review board-approved chart review was conducted in all patients with ARMs seen at a single institution in El Paso, Texas, from January 2012 to December 2015. Data regarding demographics, types of ARMs, associated syndromes, and long-term complications were recorded using the Krickenbeck classification system. Results: Of the 37 patients included in the study, 20 were boys and 17 were girls. The most common ARMs were rectoperineal fistula (46%), rectourethral fistula, and cloacal malformation. Constipation was the most common long-term complication, especially in patients with recto-perineal fistula. Conclusion: Children in the Borderland community may have a higher percentage of recto-perineal fistula than previously reported. Postoperative complications in Hispanic children with ARM were comparable to those reported in other populations.

Abstract:Objective Treatment of neonates with anorectal malformations (ARMs) can be challenging due to variability in anatomic definitions, multiple approaches to surgical management, and heterogeneity of reported outcomes. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize existing evidence, identify treatment controversies, and provide guidelines for perioperative care. Methods The American Pediatric Surgical Association Outcomes and Evidence Based Practice Committee (OEBP) drafted five consensus-based questions regarding management of children with ARMs. These questions were related to categorization of ARMs and optimal methods and timing of surgical management. A comprehensive search strategy was performed, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to perform the systematic review to attempt to answer five questions related to surgical care of ARM. Results A total of 10,843 publications were reviewed, of which 90 were included in final recommendations, and some publications addressed more than one question (question: 1 n= 6, 2 n= 63, n=15, 4 n= 44). Studies contained largely heterogenous groups of ARMs, making direct comparison for each subtype challenging and therefore, no specific recommendation for optimal surgical approach based on outcomes can be made. Both loop and divided colostomy may be acceptable methods of fecal diversion for patients with a diagnosis of anorectal malformation, however, loop colostomies have higher rates of prolapse in the literature reviewed. In terms of timing of repair, there did not appear to be significant differences in outcomes between early and late repair groups. Clear and uniform definitions are needed in order to ensure similar populations of patients are compared moving forward. Recommendations are provided based primarily on A-D levels of evidence. Conclusions Evidence-based best practices for ARMs are lacking for many aspects of care. Multi-institutional registries have made progress to address some of these gaps. Further prospective and comparative studies are needed to improve care and provide consensus guidelines for this complex patient population. Level of Evidence 3

Methods The Dutch Quality Standard for ARM served as the basis for the development of guidelines. Literature was searched in Medline, Embase, and Cochrane. The ADAPTE method was utilized to incorporate the newest available evidence. A panel of 15 experts from seven European countries assessed currency, acceptability, and applicability of recommendations. Recommendations from the Dutch Quality Standard were adapted, adopted, or rejected and recommendations were formed considering all available evidence, expert consensus, and the European context. Results Aspects pertaining to organization of care, patient/parent/health care provider communication, and referral and collaboration between providers caring for ARM patients were assessed. Two new studies were identified. In total, the panel adapted 12 recommendations, adopted 7, and developed 2 de novo. The overall level of newly found evidence was considered low and most recommendations were based on expert opinion. Conclusion Collaborative care and organization of care are gaining importance in the field of ARM. This guideline gives practical guidance on how to achieve better communication and collaboration between all involved parties, applicable at the European level. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARM) are rare and heterogenous which creates a challenge in conducting research and offering recommendations for best practice. The Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium (PCPLC) was formed in 2016 to address this challenge and created a shared national data registry to collect information about pediatric colorectal patients. There has been no external validation of the data collected. We sought to evaluate the database by performing a patient matched analysis comparing 30-day outcomes identified in the PCPLC registry with the NSQIP-P database for patients undergoing surgical repair of ARM.METHODS: Patients captured in the PCPLC database from 2016 to 2021 at institutions also participating in NSQIP-P who underwent ARM repair younger than 12 months old were reviewed for 30-day complications. These patients were matched to their NSQIP-P record using their hospital identification number, and records were compared for concordance in identified complications.RESULTS: A total of 591 patient records met inclusion criteria in the PCPLC database. Of these, 180 patients were also reviewed by NSQIP-P. One hundred and fifty-six patient records had no complications recorded. Twenty-four patient records had a complication listed in one or both databases. There was a 91 % concordance rate between databases. When excluding complications not tracked in the PCPLC registry, this agreement improved to 93 %.CONCLUSION: Including all patients evaluated for this subpopulation, a 91 % concordance rate was observed when comparing PCPLC collected complications to NSQIP-P. Future efforts can focus on further validating the data within the PCPLC for other patient populations.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: V.

Congenital Heart Defects in Patients with Anorectal Malformations: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 281 Patients

Abstract:In patients born with anorectal malformations (ARM), additional congenital heart defects (CHD) can occur. We aimed to provide an overview on disease and treatment details of CHD identified in patients born with ARM, from a unique large cohort of a very rare disease. We performed a retrospective single-center cohort study between January 2000 and July 2023. All consecutive patients with ARM were included. Outcomes were the number of patients with CHD, and screening percentage and percentage of patients diagnosed with CHD over 3 time periods (2000–2006, 2007–2014, 2015–2023). We used uni- and multi-variable logistic regression analyses to search for associations between CHD present and baseline characteristics. In total, 281 patients were included. Some 241 (85.8%) underwent echocardiography, of whom 80 (33.2%) had CHD. Screening percentage with echocardiography increased (74.1% vs. 85.7% vs. 95.9%, p < 0.001) and percentage of patients diagnosed with CHD remained similar over time (30.2% vs. 34.5% vs. 34.0%, p = 0.836). Atrial and ventricular septal defects ( n = 36, n = 29), and persistent left superior vena cava ( n = 17) were most identified. The presence of VACTERL-association or a genetic syndrome was independently associated with the presence of CHD. CHD were present in 33% of patients with ARM that underwent echocardiography. Over time, the number of CHD identified through screening remained similar. Patients with the presence of VACTERL-association or a genetic syndrome had a higher risk of having CHD. Therefore, acknowledging the potential presence of CHD in patients with ARM remains important.

The Importance of Screening for Additional Anomalies in Patients with Anorectal Malformations: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Background: In children with anorectal malformations (ARM), additional anomalies can occur within the VACTERL-association. Routine screening is of great importance for early identification and potential treatment. However, uniformity in screening protocols is lacking and only small cohorts have been described in literature. The aim of this study was to assess and describe a unique large cohort of ARM patients who underwent VACTERL screening in the neonatal period. Methods: A retrospective mono-center cohort study was performed. Included were all neonates born between January 2000 and December 2020 who were diagnosed with ARM and screened for additional anomalies. Full screening consisted of x-ray and ultrasound of the spine, cardiac and renal ultrasound, and physical examination for limb deformities, esophageal atresia, and ARM. Criteria for VACTERL-classification were predefined according to the EUROCAT-definitions. Results: In total, 216 patients were included, of whom 167 (77.3%) underwent full VACTERL-screening (66% in 2000-2006 vs. 82% in 2007-2013 vs. 86% in 2014-2020). Median age at follow-up was 7.0 years (IQR 3.0-12.8). In 103/167 patients (61.7%), additional anomalies were identified. Some 35/216 patients (16.2%) fulfilled the criteria of a form of VACTERL-association. In 37/216 patients (17.1%), a genetic cause or syndrome was found. Conclusions: The majority of ARM patients underwent full screening to detect additional anomalies (77%), which improved over time to 86%. Yet, approximately a quarter of patients was not screened, with the potential of missing important additional anomalies that might have severe consequences in the future. Forms of VACTERL-association or genetic causes were found in 16% and 17% respectively. This study emphasizes the importance of routine screening. Level of evidence: III.

Abstract:In the neural network field, many application models have been proposed. A neuro chip and an artificial retina chip are developed to comprise the neural network model and simulate the biomedical vision system. Previous analog neural network models were composed of the operational amplifier and fixed resistance. It is difficult to change the connection coefficient. In this study, we used analog electronic multiple and sample hold circuits. The connecting weights describe the input voltage. It is easy to change the connection coefficient. This model works only on analog electronic circuits. It can finish the learning process in a very short time and this model will enable more flexible learning.

Abstract:Neonates with a new diagnosis of anorectal malformation (ARM) present a unique challenge to the clinical team. ARM is strongly associated with additional midline malformations, such as those observed in the VACTERL sequence, including vertebral, cardiac, and renal malformations. Timely assessment is necessary to identify anomalies requiring intervention and to prevent undue stress and delayed treatment. We utilized a multidisciplinary team to develop an algorithm guiding the midline workup of patients newly diagnosed with ARM. Patients were included if born in or transferred to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), or if seen in clinic within one month of life. Complete imaging was defined as an echocardiogram, renal ultrasound, and spinal magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound within the first month of life. We compared three periods: prior to implementation (2010–2014), adoption period (2015), and delayed implementation (2022); p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Rates of complete imaging significantly improved from pre-implementation to delayed implementation (65.2% vs. 50.0% vs. 97.0%, p = 0.0003); the most growth was observed in spinal imaging (71.0% vs. 90.0% vs. 100.0%, p = 0.001). While there were no differences in the rates of identified anomalies, there were fewer missed diagnoses with the algorithm (10.0% vs. 47.6%, p = 0.05). We demonstrate that the implementation of a standardized algorithm can significantly increase appropriate screening for anomalies associated with a new diagnosis of ARM and can decrease delayed diagnosis. Further qualitative studies will help to refine and optimize the algorithm moving forward.

Abstract:Purpose: Children with anorectal malformation (ARM) and Hirschsprung's disease (HD) often experience bowel symptoms into adulthood, despite definitive surgery. This study evaluates the quality of life (QOL) and bowel functional outcome of children treated for ARM and HD in comparison to healthy controls. Methods: Between December 2020 and February 2023, we recruited patients with ARM and HD aged 3-17 years at four tertiary referral centres, who had primary corrective surgery done >12 months prior. Healthy controls were age-matched and sex-matched. All participants completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Generic Core Scales 4.0, General Well-Being (GWB) Scale 3.0 and Family Impact (FI) Module 2.0 Questionnaires. Bowel Function Score (BFS) Questionnaires were also administered. We also performed subgroup analysis according to age categories. Appropriate statistical analysis was performed with p<0.05 significance. Ethical approval was obtained. Results: There were 306 participants: 101 ARM, 87 HD, 118 controls. Patients with ARM and HD had significantly worse Core and FI Scores compared with controls overall and in all age categories. In the GWB Scale, only ARM and HD adolescents (13-17 years) had worse scores than controls. ARM and HD had significantly worse BFSs compared with controls overall and in all age categories. There was significant positive correlation between BFS and Core Scores, GWB Scores and FI Scores. Conclusion: Patients with ARM and HD had worse QOL than controls. Lower GWB Scores in adolescents suggests targeted interventions are necessary. Bowel function influences QOL, indicating the need for continuous support into adulthood.

Abstract:Background: Anorectal malformations (ARM) are birth defects in which the anus and rectum dont develop properly ranging from simple to complex entities which require complicated surgical intervention. Despite treatment, it causes considerable morbidity and mortality. Incidence is about 1 in 2,000 to 5,000 live births worldwide. In developing countries such as Tanzania, the management of ARMs poses a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge The most common challenges are Late presentation, limited access to trained pediatric surgeons, and inadequate facilities for diagnosis of associated congenital anomalies Aim: To determine the prevalence and treatment outcome of anorectal malformation at MMH in five years from 2018 to 2022. Objectives: This was accomplished with the following specific objectives namely, to describe the Age and sex distribution of the patient with anal rectal malformations admitted at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, to determine the incidence of ARMs in patients admitted at MMH in the surgical ward, to identify the common types of ARMs, to find out the type of surgery performed for ARMs treatment, to evaluate complications associated with surgery in a patient with ARM Methodology: A hospital-based retrospective, descriptive cross sectional study. Information was recorded in a structured questionnaire and then entered into Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Software version 22.0 for analysis Tables and chat were used to present the variable outcome as presented below Results: The sex distribution male to female ratio was nearly 1:1, number of cases recorded in 2018 was 8(9.9%) increasing to 33(40.7%) in 2022. Geographically distribution of cases was Pemba 18(22.2%), South Unguja 9 (11.1%), North Unguja 14 (17.3%) and Urban West 40 (49.9%) patient complaints were the absence of anal opening 68 (84%) followed the passage of stool through urethra/ Vagina /Perineum 8(9.9%). According to the Krickenbeck classification, the majority of patients 73(90.1%) had major clinical type ARMs and 8(9.9%) had minor clinical type ARMs. Surgical management 3 stage procedure (53(65.4%)- complete all stages and 17(21.0%) not yet all stage) and 1 stage procedure 11(13.6%) out of all managed patients 14 develop postoperative complication diving complication rate of 17.2%, the remaining 67(82.7%) present no complication, colostomy prolapse 5 (6.2%) occurred mostly. Living status 73(90.1%) overall survival rate and mortality rate of 8(9.9%) Most major type ARMs 45(55.6%) were hospitalized in less than 10 days but no case of Minor was hospitalized more than 15 days. Conclusion: In Zanzibar, as in other parts of the world ARMs are common surgical problems causing considerable morbidity and mortality. Out of all pediatric gastrointestinal surgeries ARM accounts for 35%. Modern surgical approach single stage approach in the management of ARM will improve patient outcome

Res. 166, 810– 813 (2006). Recent improvements in DNA microarray technologies and bioinformatics have made it possible to look for common features of ionizing radiation-responsive genes and their regulatory regions. We analyzed the promoters of 217 radiation-responsive human genes, compiled from microarray databases available in the literature. Using the DBTSS database, the transcriptional start sites were determined, and the core promoter elements, such as the TATA-box, initiator (Inr), GC-box and CCAAT-box, were searched for in the −1000 bp/ +200 bp region of each gene by using MATCH. It was found that the frequency of Inr in radiation-responsive genes was higher than that in general genes, and the frequencies of the GC-box and CCAAT-box were significantly lower than those in general genes. Use of the GC-box and the CCAAT-box in radiation-responsive genes was found to be dependent on the TATA-box status; that is, GC-box frequency was low in TATA box-containing genes, and CCAAT-box frequency was also low in TATA-less genes. When correlations between gene functions and frequencies of core promoter elements were examined, no apparent biased use of the core promoter element in association with a specific gene function was observed. It may be speculated that use of Inr in the core promoter correlates with appearance of radiation-responsive enhancer (silencer) elements in the upstream (downstream) regulatory region.
