Abstract:Introduction: Lack of awareness about a contagious disease like pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) among the general population may be a hindrance to early prevention of infection and timely care-seeking, besides being a stigma fuelling factor. The objective in this study is to identify the roles of education and media exposure on correct knowledge regarding the route of TB transmission across selected low awareness geographical regions of India, one of the 30 high TB burden countries according to the WHO. Methods: The study is based on NFHS 3 (2005-06) unit level data on adult men and women using basic statistical tools and logistic regression analysis. Results: Adults of both sexes in the northern, central and eastern regions of India are found to have lower than all India share of correct knowledge about the route of TB transmission. Education seems to be positively impacting correct knowledge among women in all three regions and among men, only in the East. Good exposure to mass media significantly raises the probability of correct knowledge among both genders in the east while leaving no impact in the north and central regions. Conclusion: Adoption of a more holistic approach in fighting TB is the need of the hour. Besides addressing the medical aspect of the disease, region-specific deeper socio-economic factors like education and media exposure that can potentially impact disease related knowledge and awareness need to be incorporated in attempts to control TB particularly in a high endemic country like India.

Abstract:Background: India has the highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the world with over 2 million incident cases (21% of the global burden). Future physicians should correctly diagnose, treat the cases to prevent the development of newer cases. Materials and Methods: The observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in 2012 among 172 interns. Study tool was an English language, pre-designed, pre-tested, self-administered, semi-structured questionnaire. Study variables were multiple including different aspects of TB knowledge. Then, data were collected from them. Finally, the collected data were tabulated, analyzed and interpreted by proper statistical methods (by percentage). Results: The response rate was 88.4%; mean age was 23.8 (standard deviation ±1.5) years, ranged from 22 to 28 years. A majority of interns (65.4%) correctly identified droplet infection as the chief mode of transmission of pulmonary TB (PTB). Again 65.4% interns correctly mentioned coughing for 2 weeks or more as the most important symptom of PTB. Majority (91.0%) correctly responded sputum examination for acid fast bacilli for diagnosis. Only a few respondents (25.6%) were able to narrate correct categorization of TB. More than 3/4 th (76.9%) could correctly name all the five first line anti-TB drugs used in directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS). Conclusion: The most worrisome finding was the lack of proper knowledge about TB transmission. Poor level of knowledge can prevent the future medical practitioners from suspecting TB. The present study was found comparable with many other study findings. The respondents had moderate knowledge regarding treatment monitoring. There is an urgent need for the huge increase in awareness of DOTS among budding doctors.

Knowledge about tuberculosis and infection prevention behavior: A nine city longitudinal study from India

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Improving patients' tuberculosis (TB) knowledge is a salient component of TB control strategies. Patient knowledge of TB may encourage infection prevention behaviors and improve treatment adherence. The purpose of this study is to examine how TB knowledge and infection prevention behaviors change over the course of treatment.METHODS: A matched patient-health worker dataset (n = 6,031) of publicly treated TB patients with NGO-provided treatment support health workers was compiled in nine Indian cities from March 2013 to September 2014. At the beginning and end of TB treatment, patients were asked about their knowledge of TB symptoms, transmission, and treatment and infection prevention behaviors.RESULTS: Patients beginning TB treatment (n = 3,424) demonstrated moderate knowledge of TB; 52.5% (50.8%, 54.2%) knew that cough was a symptom of TB and 67.2% (65.6%, 68.7%) knew that TB was communicable. Overall patient knowledge was significantly associated with literacy, education, and income, and was higher at the end of treatment than at the beginning (3.7%, CI: 3.02%, 4.47%). Infection prevention behaviors like covering a cough (63.4%, CI: 61.2%, 65.0%) and sleeping separately (19.3%, CI: 18.0%, 20.7%) were less prevalent. The age difference between patient and health worker as well as a shared language significantly predicted patient knowledge and adherence to infection prevention behaviors.CONCLUSIONS: Social proximity between health worker and patients predicted greater knowledge and adherence to infection prevention behaviors but the latter rate remains undesirably low.

Nationwide surveys of awareness of tuberculosis in India uncover a gender gap in tuberculosis awareness

Abstract:Background: Tuberculosis remains a major challenge in India, with an estimated 2.69 million cases each year. Although men are more affected than women, gender differences and related factors affect awareness of tuberculosis and thus impact tuberculosis diagnosis and access to treatment. Understanding the gender-specific needs and complexities when diagnosing and treating tuberculosis is essential to manage cases in India. Methods: We undertook a comparative study using data from three National Family and Health Surveys (NFHS), specifically NFHS-3, NFHS-4 and NFHS-5. We investigated the prevalence and gender disparity in awareness about tuberculosis, and associated factors, using regression analysis. Results: Most men and women surveyed are between the ages of 15 and 19. Across the surveys, the proportion of men and women who are unaware of spreading of tuberculosis decreases from 44.9% during NFHS 3 to 29.6% during NFHS 5. However, the prevalence ratio of men to women with no knowledge about modes of transmission of Tuberculosis increases from 0.92 during NFHS 3 to 0.98 during NFHS 5. Higher odds with younger age (NFHS 5, aOR: 1.07 (1.01-1.13)) and rural residency (NFHS 5, aOR: 1.12 (1.06-1.18)), and lower odds with unmarried marital status (NFHS 5, aOR: 0.92 (0.86-0.98)) are noteworthy associations. Women and men have differences in knowledge. Conclusions: Gender disparity associated with awareness about tuberculosis in India is observed across all three nationwide surveys. Being aged fifteen to nineteen years and residing in rural area are risk factors. Being unmarried is a protective factor for women, but not for men.

Abstract:Tuberculosis (TB) is a major worldwide health problem, particularly in India, where it accounts for a quarter of infections. Adherence to the directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS), which is necessary for TB treatment, is difficult in resource-limited circumstances. This study addressed the knowledge, attitude, and perceived barriers related to TB and DOTS adherence among patients and caregivers. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken at the selected TB clinics between November 2023 and March 2024. Purposive sample yielded 180 patients and 217 caregivers. Data were obtained using validated, self-structured questionnaires that assessed knowledge, attitude, and perceived barriers to TB and DOTS adherence. Statistical analysis was carried out with IBM SPSS version 23.0. The study found that caregivers had considerably greater TB knowledge than patients (p<0.05). Many patients misunderstood the cause of TB (50.6%) and embraced various misconceptions about the disease, such as TB spreading by shaking hands or sharing food, swimming in a holy river to cure diseases, and TB being the result of sin or karmic retribution. Distance to treatment facilities (95.6%), the necessity to take time off from work (91.7%), and social stigma (65.0%) were identified as the top three barriers to DOTS adherence. The study highlighted considerable gaps in knowledge, distant healthcare facilities, busy work schedules, and social stigma as barriers to TB treatment adherence in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Addressing these challenges via focused education and support activities is essential for enhancing DOTS adherence and TB treatment outcomes.

Abstract:Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading infectious causes of death worldwide, and India is among the countries with the highest TB burden. TB control is facing several roadblocks in our country with the rapid development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) as well as extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR) and as an after-effect of the global COVID-19 pandemic. With the target of TB elimination by 2025 (National Tuberculosis Elimination Program, NTEP), there is a need that treating physicians in our country be well aware of MDR-TB and be able to diagnose and treat it at an appropriate time. The present study is conducted to explore the knowledge levels, attitudes, and practices concerning MDR-TB amongst healthcare professionals working in different healthcare sectors. Methods: A total of 250 allopathic medical practitioners (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery [MBBS], specialists, and superspecialists) working in any sector (private or government), who are directly involved in managing any form of TB patient and are willing to undertake the assessment, were included in this online questionnaire-based survey that was circulated using various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Linked In, and Gmail. Responses to the questionnaires created in Google Forms were analyzed by capturing data in a Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet for further statistical analysis. The data were analyzed using multiple measures of dispersion and cross-tabulations. Results: Among the 250 participants, most of the participants had encountered MDR-TB in their clinical practice, and the majority believe that MDR-TB is a rising problem. Although 88% of the participants did a GeneXpert assay before the start of anti-tubercular therapy (ATT), three-fourths of the participants knew that the assay detects the MTB genome and rifampicin resistance. MDR-TB was suspected in participants after no clinical improvement was observed after 3-6 weeks of a trial of ATT. Two-thirds of the participants knew that linezolid is currently being used as a second-line drug for the treatment of MDR- TB. The respondents in our survey mostly do not themselves treat MDR-TB and refer the patients to an MDR-TB center or a pulmonary medicine specialist. Conclusion: Healthcare practitioners (HCPs) with good knowledge levels can diagnose and treat TB patients appropriately, thus decreasing the rising MDR-TB problem, and they can educate patients and the general population about TB and the emerging MDR-TB situation. With the current level of knowledge about MDR-TB management, there is certainly an urgent need for educational and persuasive measures for the training of doctors in both the public and private sectors so as to achieve TB elimination by 2025.
Knowledge, Attitudes and Health-seeking behaviour among Patients with Tuberculosis: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Background: South Africa is hugely overburdened with the cases of Tuberculosis (TB); individual’s lack of knowledge, attitude towards the disease and delays in health-seeking behaviour, are indirectly associated with death. This study assessed the knowledge, attitude and treatment of TB, and further examined the health-seeking behaviour of TB patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 327 conveniently selected participants with TB from three community health centres in Nelson Mandela Bay Health District, Eastern Cape, South Africa. A close-ended questionnaire was used to collect demographic details, knowledge, attitude and health-seeking behaviour variables. Descriptive and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Statistical significance was considered at alpha <0.05 and a confidence interval of 95%. Results: The majority of these TB patients indicated that cold air (76.5%), a dusty environment (85.9%), TB bacteria in the air (88.4%), and smoking (84.7%) had caused the disease. About 87.2% of the respondents indicated that TB treatment duration took six months or longer. Participants thought that follow-up sputum tests are an important part of TB treatment (70.6%); non-adherence to TB treatment might lead to drug-resistant TB or death (80%); TB disease could turn into HIV if not properly treated (77.4%) and that individuals with TB disease have HIV (59.9%). About 56.9% participants felt that TB treatment is difficult, takes a long time, is unpleasant, interferes with work or marriage, and people who drink and smoke are to blame for its spread (60.6%). The majority of the participants (74.0%) disagreed with TB being an African disease and 53.5% did not associate TB with poverty. The majority of the participants (92%) indicated that follow-ups at clinics were avoided because of stigmatisation. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the informal housing scheme was a statistically significant (p<0.05) factor determining the correct knowledge of TB (AOR=0.556; 95% CI: 0.316-0.977). There was a statistically significant association among TB knowledge, attitude and health-seeking behaviour. Conclusion: The participants generally had good knowledge about TB; however, there were misconceptions regarding its spread by cold air and dusty environments. The majority of participants did not attend follow-up TB treatment because of fear of stigmatisation. Formal settlements are associated with the correct knowledge of TB. Measures aimed at addressing the misconceptions about TB and its treatment are needed.

Abstract:Background . Pakistan is a country with one of the highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, and therefore, it is imperative to revisit the design of behaviour change interventions in the program. This study was designed to understand and assess the knowledge, awareness, perceptions, and health-seeking behaviour of general and specifically TB-affected population and to determine the presence and level of stigma and discrimination toward TB patients. Methods . A mixed-method study was conducted in district Haripur of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, comprising a household survey, whereby 526 individuals were interviewed, and five focus group discussions with various subgroups including TB patients and health workers and authorities. Study sought an ethical approval, and data of all respondents was kept confidential. Results . Quantitative results show that women were more knowledgeable on symptomatology and spread of TB, and with rising education, awareness on TB improves. The majority of our respondents had the understanding that it is a curable disease, yet some would avoid TB patients. Most of the respondents (both men and women) knew that one must go to a government facility for treatment. Only one-third would speak to doctor first, if they suspect TB-like symptoms. Television was a popular source of information on TB. Qualitative results captured people’s perceptions that TB was related with poverty and was still considered a stigma in the community; hence, patients afflicted feared disclosing the disease. Conclusion . With contextual understanding of communities’ knowledge, attitudes, health-seeking behaviour, and care-seeking patterns, it can be concluded that there is a need to increase the awareness about TB symptoms, mode of transmission, prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and destigmatization of the disease through health education.

Abstract:Introduction Tuberculosis is a leading cause of death, despite being a largely curable and preventable disease. The goals of TB control are to reduce infection transmission, morbidity, and mortality until TB cannot be a threat to public health any longer while preventing drug resistance. Assessing KAP on TB control and prevention among family members is more essential, and taking action based on the result can break the transmission of TB infection. Methods From August to September 2022, a community-based cross-sectional study method was used. A total of 422 participants were selected from a list of sample frames who were family members of PTB patients who had used anti-TB medication in the previous 12 months prior to the study period using a systematic random sampling method. SPSS version 25 software was used to analyze the data. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine variables related to KAP on TB prevention and control. A variable with p-values less than 0.25 was included in the multivariable logistic regression model to find independent determinant factors. In the multivariate logistic regression, variables with p-values ≤0.05 were identified as statistically significant. Result A total of 414 family members responded to the survey questionnaire. The average knowledge score on TB was 17.11 ± 6.34. The majority (51.9%) of respondents had a good knowledge of TB cases. One-third of those polled had an unfavorable attitude towards PTB prevention, with a mean score of 3.16 ± 1.78 and 55.1% had good practice in preventing tuberculosis. Marital status (AOR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.5–2.5) was an independent predictor of knowledge. Practice level is independently affected by occupation (AOR = 3.9; 95% CI = (1.7–8.7)) and health education on PTB (AOR = 2.4; 95% CI = (1.6–3.9). Conclusion Knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices about tuberculosis were not satisfactory when compared to several national and international studies. It is necessary to strengthen the program for health education and awareness-building on PTB.

Abstract:Myanmar has been identified as one of the tuberculosis (TB) high-burden countries and having an understanding of TB transmission is vital for personal infection prevention as well as preventing transmission to others. This study aimed to identify the determinants of correct knowledge on TB transmission and self-reported TB prevalence among general population in Myanmar. This is a cross-sectional study using secondary data from Myanmar demographic and health survey 2015–16. The determinants of correct knowledge on TB transmission mode and self-reported prevalence of TB were assessed using multivariable logistic regression models. Weighted estimates were provided in all analyses to account for the multistage sampling design used in the survey. Among the respondents, less than half (44.6%, 95% CI: 43.9, 45.4) had the overall correct knowledge about TB transmission and misconceptions. Older age group, female gender, those with higher education and higher socioeconomic status, and exposed to mass media at least once a week, residents from the delta and lowland region or plain areas were more likely to have correct knowledge about TB transmission. The overall prevalence rate of self-reported TB was 2.6% (95%CI: 2.4, 2.9) and the prevalence was higher among older age group and males. Our study highlights the need for targeted efforts to improve awareness and understanding of TB transmission among general population in Myanmar. The study suggests the implementation of appropriate, innovative, and comprehensive targeted TB education and communication strategies.

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of health education combine with nursing intervention on improving the awareness of patients′ tuberculosis ( TB) knowledge effectiveness. Methods A total of 1 186 cases of TB from June 2012 to June 2014 in our hospital were selected. According to accepted care measures, patients were divided into two groups, 593 cases received health education combined with nursing intervention were as the observation group, while another 593 cases received conventional care were as the control group. The questionnaires about TB knowledge, vital signs and prognosis of patient satisfaction outcomes were analyzed. Results Before accepting health education, the difference of knowledge of TB between the two groups was not statistically significant (P>0. 05). After the health education combined with nursing intervention, 540 (91. 1%) patients in the observation group got a score of TB knowledge over 60, which was significantly higher than 402 patients (67. 8%) in the control group (P<0. 05). 402 (67. 8%) patients in the observation group got a score of TB knowledge over 80, which was significantly higher than 207 patients (34. 9%) in the control group (P<0. 05). The total score of quality of life in the observation group were (603. 6 ± 127. 4), which was significantly higher than (512. 9 ± 114. 9) in the control group (t =2. 59,P<0. 05). The rate of satisfaction in observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (Z=91. 3,P<0. 05). Conclusions Health education combined with nursing intervention can effectively improve the knowledge and awareness of TB patients. The psychological status and quality of life had significantly enhanced, thus it is worthy of further promotion in clinical practice.

Abstract:Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a re-emerging disease in India. Creating awareness among the community still plays a vital role in preventing and controlling the spread of TB.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out for a period of 4 months in a rural area in Mandya, southern Karnataka. Sample size was estimated and those who fulfill the inclusion criteria were included with prior consent. Data were collected through interview method using structured questionnaire and analyzed using Epi info software.Results: Among the 774 participants, majority (61.8%) of the study participants belonged to the age group of 30-59 years; 32.7% of the subjects had studied up to secondary level of education. More than three-fourth of the subjects (76.1%) had heard about TB disease. More than 50% of the subjects mentioned "coughing" by a diseased person as the main reason for spread. Forty percent of the subjects, opined as recovery, will be complete after treatment. More than 60% of the subjects knew that TB diagnosis and treatment is free in any government health center.Conclusion: Our study found that knowledge regarding TB and its control in many of the aspects is either insufficient or not satisfactory in the community.

Abstract:Abstract Background Tuberculosis infection accounts for more annual deaths than any other single infectious disease, except the Corona Virus infection. It is a significant global issue and India is one of the most affected countries. Religious mass gatherings congregate millions of pilgrims at one place. Over-crowding is a high-risk factor for the transmission of tuberculosis. Knowledge and awareness of the disease are proven prerequisites for the spread-prevention and early diagnosis of tuberculosis. The present study was designed to explore the knowledge of tuberculosis and awareness of disease transmission risk among pilgrims attending a religious mass gathering, the Kumbh Mela (2016) in Ujjain, India. Methods Self-reported data on the pilgrims’ tuberculosis-knowledge were collected using a cross-sectional study design. A contextual, pre-tested questionnaire was used, using the convenience sampling method. In addition to the anonymous descriptive analyses, a composite knowledge-score was developed to enable comparisons between demographic groups. Results In total, 1665 pilgrims participated in the study with 38.8 years of mean age and 59% literacy rate. The most recognized symptoms of tuberculosis were “Cough for more than 15 days with sputum” (94%) and “Blood in sputum” (81%). Most participants knew that tuberculosis is an infectious disease (93%) and not hereditary (91%). Additionally, 84% considered it is a potentially lethal disease that requires extensive treatment. However, vaccine awareness was poor (4%). “Direct contact with tuberculosis patient” (78%) and “To be in a crowded area” (4%) were considered as the most important risk factors for tuberculosis transmission. For the composite knowledge-score, a significantly higher mean score was seen among those with at least ten years of schooling compared with illiterates ( p < 0.001). Occupation and residency also affected the mean score. Conclusion Most pilgrims attending the Kumbh Mela had basic knowledge of the characteristics of tuberculosis, but some important knowledge gaps concerning the transmission risks associated with crowded situations existed. These gaps need to be addressed in future policies to enable safer mass gatherings and to end the TB epidemic, globally.

It can be treated effectively with good knowledge about the disease and complete adherence to the recommended treatment regime. This study is intended to assess the level of knowledge and perception of treatment among tuberculosis patients attending primary care clinics. Methodology: We conducted a cross-sectional study using a validated self-administered questionnaire among tuberculosis patients attending primary care clinics in Johor Bahru district. A total of 208 tuberculosis patients were enrolled in this study through convenience sampling. We assessed the general knowledge, transmission, causes, and prevention of tuberculosis, where higher scores indicated better knowledge. For the perception of treatment, a higher mean score indicated a more negative perception. Results: The mean score for knowledge on tuberculosis was 54.33 ± 12.78, ranging from 25 to 88.9%. The mean score for perception was 2.75±0.52, ranging from 2.15-3.39. We found that although 88.9% of respondents knew a person could be infected with TB through inhalation of tuberculosis bacilli, a majority believed that smoking (68.2%), sharing food (69.2%), and eating from the same plate (66.8%) are causes of tuberculosis. Moreover, there was still a negative perception regarding the treatment of tuberculosis with the highest mean score for the statement ‘I am afraid if I am told I am tuberculosis positive’. Conclusions: We found that there were gaps in knowledge among tuberculosis patients. Intermittent counseling during the treatment re-enforces the knowledge of tuberculosis. An updated standardized counseling sheet of tuberculosis Health Education should be included along with staff training to update their knowledge as part of their important role in health education in tuberculosis prevention.

Abstract:Objectives: Knowledge about tuberculosis (TB) and the perceived risk to individuals, families, and communities in Nigeria may increase the tendency of care-seeking with greatest importance. This study was aimed to determine the level of knowledge about TB in Aba, Nigeria; and its association with the attitude and practices of patients towards TB. Methods: Data on socio-demographic characteristics, and questions regarding the etiology, transmission, prevention, treatment of TB, beliefs about TB and healthcare-seeking behavior were collected cross-sectional from 288 adult patients from November 2017 to March, 2018 in Living Word and Seventh Day Adventist Hospitals, Aba. Participants were patients who indicated willingness by filling a consent form and were at least 18 years old. Data collected were analyzed using Chi-squared test and multiple regression models. Results: One-hundred eighty-eight (65.2%) of the study population had adequate knowledge about TB. The sources of knowledge were health workers (136 participants, 47.2%), Media (76, 26.4%), Friends (28, 9.7%), Family (28, 9.7%) and others (40, 13.9%). Their knowledge about TB was associated with level of education (α value= 0.05) but not with tendency to seek care from nearest facilities before hospital. The length of time they spent before visiting the hospital when they had TB symptoms was associated with their level of knowledge about TB, level of education, sex and severity of symptoms. Conclusions: Level of knowledge about TB in the study area still needs to be improved. Means of creating awareness about TB should be diversified and the stop TB program strengthened. Assessment of knowledge, attitude and practice on tuberculosis among teacher trainees of Samtse College of Education, Bhutan

Abstract:Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Bhutan despite the implementation of directly observed treatment short-course since 1997. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice on TB among the teacher trainees of Samtse College of Education. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the teacher trainees of Samtse College of Education. A standardized pretested questionnaire was distributed and self-administered. The participants were selected randomly using randomization. The data was entered in Epi-data 4.4.2.1 and analysed using STATA version 13. A score of 1 point for a correct answer and 0 for wrong/don't know answer was given. The knowledge, attitude and practice score were divided into good and poor based on 50% cut off. Logistic regression was used for the analysis to identify the significant covariates. Results: A total of 420 trainees responded to the survey questionnaire. The average knowledge score on TB was 10.7 (Range = 0-21). Two hundred and forty respondents (58.6%) had low knowledge (mean score 7.8±2.5) on TB. Cough, chest pain and weight loss were correctly reported as the symptoms of TB by 306 (72.9%), 187(44.5%) and 187 (44.5%) participants. Eighty-nine-point five percent (376) of participants reported coughing as the main route of TB transmission and 85% (357) of the participants said that it could be prevented by covering the mouth while coughing. In multivariable analysis; the trainees in the junior years of college had good knowledge of TB compared with the senior years (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.02; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-3.5; p-value 0.011). Respondents previously treated for TB were more likely to have good knowledge on TB compared to those who never had TB in the past (AOR 2.39; 95% CI 1.07-5.31; p-value 0.033). The majority (93%) of respondents had a good attitude towards TB cases. Female trainees were 2.4 (95% CI 1.02-5.62; p-value 0.045) times more likely than male trainees to have a positive attitude towards TB. Eighty-eight percent of the respondents reported that they would visit the hospital if they had TB symptoms. The mean score for the practice on TB was 1.33±0.59 (Range:0-2). Conclusion: In this study, the majority of the trainees had poor knowledge on TB, especially among the trainees in senior years of college and those who had never suffered from TB. The attitude towards TB was good especially among the female trainees. However, the overall practice was poor among the participants. Therefore, the Ministry of Health should collaborate with relevant stakeholders especially the Ministry of Education to incorporate topics on TB in the syllabus of students and colleges to create awareness on it.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Of different methods of disease prevention, health education and awareness programmes can empower people regarding several aspects of disease management and thereby enabling them in accessing the right treatment, in right time, at right place.AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a structured Tuberculosis (TB) awareness strategy on the knowledge and behaviour of slum dwellers of Durg, Chhattisgarh, India.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A TB awareness intervention was implemented in terms of informing the houses of marginalized and vulnerable communities about TB, its symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and Revised National TB Control Program (RNTCP) services and the impact of the same was assessed through a survey questionnaire before and after the implementation of the intervention.RESULTS: Of the knowledge components the improvement was incurred above 90% among the study participants in all components except in two components such as; modes of TB transmission and availability of free treatment facilities. In the behavioural segment, after the implementation of the awareness strategy, 53% and 92% of the respondents reported to visit government health facility for seeking help for their general and TB related problems respectively. Similarly the responses regarding not approaching the government health facility for TB care were changed after the implementation of the awareness strategy and 36% of the respondents said they would prefer to visit government health facility for TB care.CONCLUSION: Health education activities should be directed to improve the knowledge of slum dwellers regarding the modes of TB transmission and availability of free treatment at public health facilities.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The knowledge of HIV prevention, attitudes towards people living with HIV (PLHIV), and beliefs in myths related to HIV/AIDS among women of reproductive age group in India hold immense importance. As this group is particularly vulnerable to HIV infection, having accurate knowledge about prevention methods is crucial to protect themselves and their partners. Positive attitudes towards PLHIV foster support, reduce stigma and encourage early testing and treatment. Additionally, debunking myths and misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS can help dispel fear and promote informed decision-making. Empowering women with comprehensive knowledge, fostering positive attitudes, and debunking myths can contribute to effective HIV prevention strategies, reduce transmission rates, and improve women's overall well-being in India.OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to create a regression model to show disparities in knowledge of the prevention of HIV/AIDS, attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS, and belief in myths among women in India with adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for different socio-demographic factors, and to determine if there are any significant changes in the aOR during both surveys.STUDY DESIGN: A comparative study using secondary data analysis of two complex sample surveys.METHODS: Individual Recode files from datasets obtained from Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) Program were exported to STATA v17.0 MP by STATA Corp LLC. Dependent and independent variables were chosen based on a literature review and computed. The design-adjusted chi-square test was used to assess the association between variables. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to derive a model. The model assessment was performed using the Wald test after estimation.RESULTS: The age group of 15-19 years had the highest odds of having sufficient knowledge of the prevention of HIV/AIDS during both National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) (aOR: 1.98 during NFHS-4 and aOR: 1.80 during NFHS-5). No education group had the highest odds of negative attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS during both surveys (aOR: 4.85 during NFHS-4 and aOR: 2.69 during NFHS-5). Rural areas had higher odds of believing in myths related to HIV/AIDS during both surveys (aOR: 1.07 during NFHS-4 and aOR: 1.13 during NFHS-5).CONCLUSIONS: This research study sheds light on the significant relationship between demographic factors and knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs related to HIV/AIDS among women. Specifically, women in the lower age group, lacking education, and residing in rural areas exhibited substantial levels of inadequate knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS prevention. Furthermore, this group was also associated with higher proportions of negative attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS and a greater tendency to believe in myths associated with HIV/AIDS.
